The 25 Greatest Time-Travel Movies Ever Made

time travel movies on amazon prime

It must say something, surely, about humans, how often time-travel movies are about returning to the past rather than jumping to the future. As Mark Duplass’s forlorn character says in Safety Not Guaranteed , “The mission has to do with regret.” With all the potential to explore the unknown world of the future, so often when our minds conspire to bend the rules of time it’s instead to rehash the old. It’s compelling to watch a character in a movie do what we cannot — right past wrongs or uncover the reason for or meaning behind the events in their lives, whether they be emotionally catastrophic or merely geopolitically motivated.

So absent is the future from the canon, in fact, that when it is involved, typically future dwellers are leaving their own time to come back to the present. Back to the Future Part II aside, it seems as if there’s something about going forward in time that just doesn’t track for humans. (Of course, you could argue that this is because the present-day concept of bidirectional time travel would infinitely multiply or change beyond recognition any future that may occur, but that’s a knot for another article.)

In any case, the time-travel stories deemed worthy of Hollywood budgets aren’t always straightforward in their mechanics. Some films on this list barely qualify as time-travel movies at all; others could hardly qualify as anything else. There are movies about trips through time but also ones about the bending and fracturing and muddying thereof; then there are those about, as Andy Samberg aptly puts it in Palm Springs , “one of those infinite time-loop situations you might have heard about.” There’s even a movie in which we get only 13 seconds’ worth of time travel, when it functions more like a joke whose punch line hits at the film’s climax.

What these films all do have in common is a fascination with changing the way time works. That being said, the list leaves out movies in larger, more extended franchises in which time meddling is a one-off dalliance thrown into a sequel with little by way of foreshadowing: think Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , Avengers: Endgame , and Men in Black III . (It also leaves off perhaps the Ur-time-travel movie, Primer , and the quite good Midnight in Paris because their directors don’t deserve the column inches.) We’re looking at self-contained stories using time mechanics from the start, with preference given to those that involve themselves more intently with the ins and outs of time travel; that ask questions about time, aging, memory and so forth; and that try to succeed at it in new and interesting ways. So let’s get to it.

25. Galaxy Quest (1999)

Does Galaxy Quest really count as a time-travel movie? Some compelling reasons argue that it doesn’t: Time travel isn’t a major factor in the plot, and the time traveling that does occur is, yes, only a 13-second jump. But its use of time travel is meaningful insofar as the movie itself is a loving spoof of Star Trek , which makes use of time travel in three films ( one of which made this list ), not to mention dozens of episodes across its various TV iterations. Tacking on time travel as a deus ex machina for the actors in a Star Trek– like show pressed into service as an actual space crew by an endangered alien race is the exact right amount of ribbing in a movie that’s as on point as it is hilarious.

Galaxy Quest is available to rent on Amazon .

24. Happy Death Day (2017)

Pick away at the surface of a time-loop movie and you find a horror movie. Most of the entries on this list are covered in enough feel-good spin to land as comedies, but Happy Death Day stares the horror of the time-loop phenomenon right in the face. (It’s also quite funny.) Reliving the same day over and over is an unimaginably potent form of psychological torture, and adding murder to the equation does little to dull that edge. The film follows a college-age protagonist struggling to escape from a masked slasher hell-bent on killing her again and again while she tries to solve the mystery of how she got stuck in a time loop.

Happy Death Day is available to rent on Amazon .

23. Back to the Future Part II (1989)

Seriously, this may be the only good movie in which the film’s whole focus is using a time machine to travel into the future. The fact that it’s a sequel is telling — the characters already traveled into the past in the first movie , and the filmmakers decided to save “traveling even further into the past“ for the third film in the trilogy. Still, Back to the Future Part II is a fun time that makes great use of sight gags and references, recasting scenes from the first film in the distant future year of 2015 with all its hoverboards and self-lacing Nikes.

Back to the Future Part II is available to rent on Amazon .

22. See You Yesterday (2019)

It’s a dirty little secret of time-travel movies that they tend to be, well, pretty white. Tenet ’s Protagonist aside, if Hollywood’s sending someone through time, they’re almost certainly not a Black person, and for obvious reasons: Most of post-contact North American history is deeply unfriendly to people of color, and the problems a person running around out of time and place is going to encounter are deeply compounded if they’ll likely be the target of racist abuse or violence — which makes See You Yesterday all the more compelling. Produced by Spike Lee and featuring one of filmdom’s most famous time travelers in a cameo role, it follows a Black teenage science prodigy who uses a time machine to try to save her brother from being killed by a police officer.

See You Yesterday is streaming on Netflix .

21. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

No offense to the Back to the Future franchise, but time travel never looks more fun on film than it does in the first Bill & Ted movie. It’s a concept that feels distinctly of a different era, so pure is its zaniness, that it’s hard to imagine anyone concocting it today. The titular duo, Californian high-school students in the ’80s, travel through the past looking for historical figures in order to ace a history project, then bring them all back to the present. High jinks ensue! We get Genghis Khan in a sporting-goods store and Mozart on an electric keyboard. What more could you want?

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is streaming on HBO Max .

20. Source Code (2011)

Time-travel-film aficionados know this won’t be Jake Gyllenhaal’s only stop on this list, but no matter. Source Code finds him repeating the same eight minutes over and over as he struggles to find the culprit in a train bombing — with each replay ending in his own death by explosion. For some reason, a romantic subplot is shoehorned into this, along with a bunch of frankly unnecessary technical mumbo-jumbo, but the core idea is a compelling mix of the time-loop movie and the train whodunit that Gyllenhaal is a perfect fit for.

Source Code is available to rent on Amazon .

19. 12 Monkeys (1995)

Some sort of law of nature dictates that every genuinely good idea and/or piece of true art has to at some point be turned into a Hollywood movie. Thank God La Jetée was adapted into something that can stand on its own feet artistically. 12 Monkeys may not retain its source material’s black-and-white look or stripped-down, static-image presentation, but it is a rollicking good time nonetheless. That’s in no small part due to director Terry Gilliam getting the best out of Bruce Willis and a young Brad Pitt, and recasting World War III as a planet-decimating virus. Which, like at least one other movie on this list , “speaks to the present moment,” or whatever.

12 Monkeys is available to rent on Amazon .

18. Run Lola Run (1998)

Unlike almost all of the other films on this list, the terms time travel and time machine don’t show up anywhere in Run Lola Run . Rather, it’s a sort of de facto time-loop scenario in which the protagonist tries repeatedly to pay a ransom to save her boyfriend’s life. In fact, if not for a few key details, it could easily be characterized (and often has been) as an alternate-endings movie rather than a time-travel film. But the fact that Lola seems to be learning from her past attempts with each successive one suggests that she is, indeed, using knowledge gained from previous loops to bring a satisfactory end to this situation.

Run Lola Run is available to rent on Amazon .

17. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

One of the most striking things about Groundhog Day is the mutability and replicability of its core conceit. Perhaps the best case in point is Edge of Tomorrow , sometimes known as Live. Die. Repeat. after its original tagline. It’s the kind of physically grueling movie only an actor as genuinely unhinged as Tom Cruise could pull off. A noncombatant thrust into a war against invading aliens, Cruise’s character finds himself reliving day one of combat over and over, slowly but surely refining his techniques in order to survive the extraterrestrial onslaught. Like the central twosome in the much less violent Palm Springs , he winds up with a partner in (war) crime, teaming up with the similarly time-trapped Emily Blunt, and the explanation for the replay glitch here is actually pretty satisfying.

Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on Fubo TV .

16. Star Trek (2009)

If you could create some sort of an advanced stat to measure controversy generated per unit of interesting filmmaking decisions, J.J. Abrams would have to be near the top in terms of his ability to rig up movie drama from almost nothing. This is a guy whose filmography is like Godzilla rip-off, Spielberg homage, safe reboot of cherished IP, repeat. Star Trek may be his best film, though, a sure-footed reinvention of a dorky sci-fi franchise that made it, well, cool. Somehow, the beauty of Spock and Kirk’s bromance being woven through chance encounters with future selves kind of … works?

Star Trek is available to rent on Amazon .

15. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

There’s a relative dearth of time travel in animated film, which perhaps is a function simply of the fact that it’s less impressive to stage in a world that’s already unreal. If you can Looney Tunes your way through physics, what’s so special about grabbing the flow of time and tying it into a bow? Still, the original Girl Who Leapt Through Time deserves mention here. It’s a beautiful story that interlaces the complexity of time leaping with the intensity of teenage emotion and the thorny process of growing up where the opportunity to redo things leads, over time, to growth — a less shitty Groundhog Day , in a way.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is available to rent on Amazon .

14. Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

She may not be the most famous, decorated, or emulated actress of her generation, but Aubrey Plaza is someone whose personality spoke to the irony-soaked 2010s in a way that simply could not be denied. Her character on Parks and Recreation , April Ludgate, was, by all accounts, created specifically to channel Plaza’s real-life personality to the screen, and she plays essentially the same character in Safety Not Guaranteed . Here, she’s a sarcastic intern at a magazine working on a story about a would-be time traveler and using her feminine wiles to slowly gain his trust. The chemistry between Plaza and Mark Duplass is probably the film’s high point; the subplot about the FBI feels like it was clipped out of a bad X-Files episode.

Safety Not Guaranteed is streaming on Tubi .

13. La Jetée (1962)

At only a 28-minute run time, La Jetée is arguably too short to merit inclusion on this list. However, what it lacks in content (and in, well, moving images; it’s almost exclusively a collection of static black-and-white shots set to voice-over), it more than makes up for in inventiveness and influence, and it would be a travesty to leave it out in favor of more recent by-the-book fare. Tracing the tale of a man held prisoner in post-WWIII Paris being used in time-travel experiments as his captors seek to remedy the postapocalyptic state of the world, he’s sent into both the future and the past and ends up unraveling a lifelong personal mystery while he’s at it.

La Jetée is streaming on the Criterion Channel .

12. Planet of the Apes (1968)

Unlike the worse but more straightforwardly time-traveling Tim Burton remake, the relationship between the original Planet of the Apes and time travel is inexact — technically, the astronaut crew that lands on the titular planet does travel forward 2,000 years, but it’s not done via a time machine. The travel isn’t instantaneous: It literally does take them 2,000 years to get there; they’re just unconscious and on life support. Still, the way the film’s ending handles the iconic reveal is exactly in line with the best of the time-travel canon, the telescoping, mise en abyme feeling of the world shifting in front of your very eyes without your moving an inch.

Planet of the Apes is available to rent on Amazon .

11. Groundhog Day (1993)

The famous Bill Murray vehicle essentially invented the infinite-time-loop genre (and it’s hardly a movie that succeeds on the strength of its concept alone), but the idea at its core is so steeped in the casual misogyny of late-’80s and early-’90s cinema that it’s hard to watch today without cringing. Murray’s character employing what amounts to PUA-style techniques over and over and over in a desperate bid to fuck his hapless co-worker just doesn’t hit the way it did back then. If the story arc didn’t present a guy detoxifying himself of the worst aspects of masculinity in order to be worthy of a woman’s love as the primary way for a 20th-century white man to achieve full personhood, this would be much higher on the list.

Groundhog Day is streaming on Starz .

10. Predestination (2014)

This is probably the most complicated film on the list. Following a “temporal agent” (played by Ethan Hawke) who’s trying to prevent a bombing in 1970s New York, it’s based on a Robert A. Heinlein short story and features Shiv Roy herself, Sarah Snook, in a star-making turn as someone with a complicated backstory and a secret. Like the best sci-fi, the film’s premise raises all kinds of fascinating questions about the titular concept and throws in some interesting musings on sex, gender, and the self in the process.

Predestination is streaming on Tubi .

9. Looper (2012)

Wes Anderson gets a lot of flak for his overwrought twee visuals, but Rian Johnson has a knack for making movies that feel and function like dioramas even if they don’t look it. Narratively speaking, everything here is constructed just so — and there’s a certain beauty in that — but who ever had a profound experience of art by looking at a diorama? Looper was probably Johnson’s least precious pre– Star Wars film, which is nice because the temptation to drastically overmaneuver the mechanics of a time-travel story can lead to disaster. The tech used to Bruce Willis–ify Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s face is distracting, and the third act’s retreat from the postapocalyptic city of the future to the postapocalyptic corn farm of the future is a brave choice that the film struggles to land. Still, Johnson’s vision of a future in which organized crime runs time travel is compelling and well worth a watch.

Looper is streaming on Netflix .

8. Donnie Darko (2001)

Donnie Darko is a bit of a genre mash-up. Part high-school movie, part sci-fi flick, part bleak meditation on the soullessness of late-’80s America, it’s nevertheless a weirdly successful piece of filmmaking that makes fantastic use of a young Jake Gyllenhaal, a great supporting cast (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Jena Malone, and Patrick Swayze among others), and an absolutely iconic haunting cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World.” Watching high schoolers navigate parallel universes, wormholes, and time travel is a dicey proposition, but director Richard Kelly makes it work, somehow.

Donnie Darko is streaming on HBO Max .

7. Back to the Future (1984)

While it’s clearly superior to the sequel (and leagues ahead of the final film in the trilogy), the original Back to the Future is a bit of a mess (John Mulaney was right , to be honest). Its racial and gender politics are cringey, and the incest subplot is weird (“It’s your cousin Marvin. Marvin Pornhub . You know that new plot element you’ve been looking for?”), but there’s a clear interest in time travel beyond its shimmering surface: the very real addressing of the “grandfather problem” in time travel via the slow disappearance of Marty from his family photo, the accidental invention of rock music, and a genuine curiosity about the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of time machines. Ahh, what the hell. It’s a romp.

Back to the Future is available to rent on Amazon .

6. Palm Springs (2020)

No offense to Gen-Xers and boomers, but the best time-loop movie of all time is Palm Springs . The film isn’t without its missteps, but it’s much more curious about life than Groundhog Day was through the eyes of Murray’s misanthrope. Cristin Milioti and Andy Samberg‘s characters, stuck in the loop together, are a perfect comedic match, and their shared humanity makes for a beautiful arc. The film raises questions about what’s worth doing in life when nothing lasts and how to stay sane when every day is the same. Of course, as a sort of polar opposite of Tenet , it benefited from coming out during the pandemic by speaking, as it does, to the experience of lockdown.

Palm Springs is streaming on Hulu .

5. Tenet (2020)

Interstellar wasn’t enough for Chris Nolan, apparently. Tenet ’s legacy may end up being little more than that of the COVID action movie no one saw — a bloated thriller that Nolan fought to get into theaters and bar from home viewing reportedly to swell the size of his own pockets. It really did suffer from bad timing, though, because this is genuinely a quintessential big-screen popcorn movie whose absurdity is all the more palatable when it’s given the audiovisual bombast it deserves. Ambitious in scope as it traces a war on the past by the future (yes, you read that right), Tenet is as enamored of action tropes as it is in bucking them, and its investment in rendering visible the brain-bendingly knotty mechanics of moving through time is laudable, even when the movie itself remains opaque — as impenetrable as the future, as hazy as the past.

Tenet is streaming on HBO Max .

4. The Terminator (1984)

A partner to Blade Runner in the mid-’80s invention of sci-fi noir, The Terminator is a stunning film in many ways, despite the third act’s now-iffy visual effects. While it’s not James Cameron’s debut, and it would go on to be bested by its sequel , it functions as an incredible showcase for an emerging young director who would exclusively make big stories for the rest of his career. Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast as the relentless, unemotional killer cyborg sent back from the future to terminate the mother of the eventual resistance leader, and the film’s romantic subplot has just the perfect amount of time-travel-induced cheesiness for it to work.

The Terminator is streaming on Amazon Prime Video .

3. Interstellar (2014)

It’s not inaccurate to say Christopher Nolan is a director who’s more interested in scale and scope than in expressing the minutiae of the human experience in its purest form. But in Interstellar, a Nolan movie in its titular ambitions, there’s a core element of time travel wrought not as sci-fi fireworks but as a paean to the sheer force and will of the power of love. It both does and doesn’t work, depending on your capacity for cheese in space, but even besides that, Nolan’s use of time as story arc — the way Miller’s planet functions, in particular — is conceptually masterful in the best kind of time-travel-movie way.

Interstellar is streaming on Paramount+ .

2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Whereas the franchise’s first movie spends more time on the question of time travel, in the second it takes a bit of a back seat to the action itself. It’s hard to fault director James Cameron for this decision; T2 remains one of the best action movies of the ’90s and — along with Jurassic Park and The Matrix — one of the decade’s best when for special effects. The groundbreaking T-1000 would honestly be enough to get this movie on the list; a tween John Connor grappling with questions of predestination and the fact that he is vicariously responsible for his own conception feel almost like icing on the time-travel cake. Much as in 12 Monkeys , time travel here is mistaken for delusion, as valiant Sarah Connor, in a Cassandra-esque nightmare, has to battle against the future only she knows is coming. Of course, Cassandra never had access to any firepower stored in underground desert arsenals.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is streaming on Netflix .

1. Arrival (2016)

It’s fair to wonder whether Arrival really is, in fact, a time-travel movie. The Ted Chiang short story it’s based on isn’t about time travel per se; rather, it’s an exploration of alternate forms of temporal understanding. The linguist protagonist, played by Amy Adams, doesn’t travel through time so much as come to experience it differently. Still, the plot ends up hinging on foreknowledge that she is granted not via visions but by actually experiencing her future simultaneously with her present and past. For our purposes, though, that’s time fuckery enough to merit inclusion, and boy howdy does the film deliver in overall quality. Partly, that’s simply a question of the source material. Chiang is arguably the most talented (and possibly the most decorated) American sci-fi writer of his generation. But the source story is not especially Hollywood friendly, and director Denis Villeneuve has adopted it lovingly, borrowing a plot device from another of Chiang’s stories, the more straightforwardly time-travel-based “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate,” in order to add some third-act blockbuster flavor. The result is a beautiful meditation on love, choice, and courage that packs art-film ethos into a genuine sci-fi blockbuster.

Arrival is streaming on Hulu and Paramount+ .

The History of Time Travel: A Sci Fi Movie on Amazon Prime

history of science fiction

Every once in a while, you come across that one movie that really stick out, whether it’s a super unique concept or just an off-the-wall sort of film.

I recently found a sci fi movie on Amazon Prime that presents itself as a documentary, when it’s actually a sci fi concept film. The History of Time Travel is filmed like a classic documentary but it’s anything but that, and it’s certainly not a Doctor Who film, either.

Here’s a complete review of The History of Time Travel .

Some History

The History of Time Travel was an Austin Film Festival movie in 2014, but it had been in various stages of production since 2010.

The writer and director, Rick Kennedy, has worked on a few other films, most of which you’ve probably never heard of. A Year from Now is a Christmas Carol meets Groundhog Day film, and his first film, The Line, is about a prisoner escaping from Nazi Germany.

Of his work, The History of Time Travel stands out as a unique entity, mainly because the idea of filming an obviously fictional story as a documentary is particularly boggling.

In an interview with the Austin Film Festival , Kennedy says that some people “might enjoy the sci-fi elements more, or find the alternate histories interesting, or appreciate the humor and the absurdity of the whole thing,” and I certainly think he’s hit the nail on the head there.

The Premise

So, as you’ve probably guessed, The History of Time Travel is a fake documentary. It employs the classic documentary narrator to make ominous comments, and all of the “experts” and first-hand accounts seem to be on the same page about the story.

And the story revolves around Edward Page and his family. Page was an MIT graduate in the late 1930s and later became a researcher for the Indiana Project, a clandestine project funded by the Pentagon to create time travel.

The Indiana Project and the Manhattan Project ran parallel for many years, but after WWII ended with the atomic bomb, the Pentagon began to cut funding to time travel research.

At some point, someone designs a portable time machine. And I say someone because as the film goes on, it becomes unclear who invented the machine. Originally, it was Edward’s son, Richard, but as Richard goes back in time to fix his family, the timelines start to get jumbled.

Just know that there is a time machine, and it does work, and you’ll know. The history gradually starts to change as the film goes on. Even though Richard only intended to change one or two aspects of the world when he went back in time, he ended up changing the whole trajectory of American history.

Nixon is assassinated in Dallas instead of JFK, Russians land on the moon first—the list goes on.

Eventually, we reach a point where the rabid flurry of timelines convene, and the world returns to normal. Not to the normal of the first half of the film, but to our normal. The History of Time Travel becomes The Theory of Time Travel , and it’s on the Science Fiction Channel instead of the History Channel.

The Verdict

At first, the scripted nature of the movie made it feel very stiff and unrealistic. Sure, they had the conventions of a documentary, but everything seemed to line up too easily, and that’s how you knew it was scripted.

The experts—which included a sci fi author, a philosopher, and a few time-travel physicists and historians—all had a similar way of storytelling, which made it evident they were reading a script. Instead of acting as individual characters, they were simply voice actors reading lines.

time travel movies on amazon prime

They spent a lot of time in the first minutes of the movie discussing the family life of Edward Page, in pretty vivid detail. I didn’t quite understand why until the movie started to branch off into different timelines, and we literally saw our history change before our eyes.

I think that the film is bold and interesting. It takes the medium of the documentary and turns it into a sci-fi concept film, and that’s something I would have never paired together. It gives me the vibe of the Ancient Aliens TV show and other similar conspiracy-theory documentaries, but with a more creative flair.

The History of Time Travel had a fairly small budget, but the production value was pretty good. There were a few points where I giggled at the poorly Photoshopped “evidence”, but I think that only contributed to the humor.

Overall, I’d give the film a 7/10. It had an original concept, and even though it stumbled through the first twenty minutes, it ended with a potent question about time travel: “Would we even notice if it happened?”

Is it the best sci fi movie on Amazon Prime right now? Not by a long shot, but it’s certainly worth watching if you’re tired of all the lasers, spaceships, and aliens that populate mainstream sci fi film.

11 Time-Travel Movies to Watch After Netflix’s The Adam Project

I n Netflix’s The Adam Project , Ryan Reynolds plays Adam Reed, a fighter pilot from 2050 who heads back in time to stop the development of time travel. His mission only gets harder after he crash-lands in his childhood backyard in the year 2022 and is forced to team up with his video game-loving 12-year-old self (portrayed by Walker Scobell).

This isn’t Back to the Future : There are no DeLoreans or high-flux capacitors in sight. (Though Mark Ruffalo , as Adam’s inventor dad, does make for a worthy Doc Brown surrogate.) Instead, Adam hops into a wormhole and traverses the space-time continuum to let his preteen self know that the ability to time-hop is a privilege, not a right. It’s a rather heady concept for a family film, but most time-travel movies are about more than just joyriding through history. Whether it’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a time-jumping hitman in Looper or Jennifer Garner aging 17 years with help from magic fairy dust in 13 Going on 30 , movies featuring transtemporal travel often show why we should err on the side of caution when spanning time and space.

If you’re craving more time travel, here’s a list of 11 movies to watch after The Adam Project . A couple quick notes: Since Back to the Future is undeniably the greatest time-travel movie of all time , it’s omitted from this list to make room for lesser-known choices. The prototypical time-loop film Groundhog’s Day was also passed over in lieu of a more recent selection.

You won’t need a science degree to enjoy any of the movies included here. But you might walk away from your viewing experience feeling as if the future is coming sooner than you think.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

Jennifer Garner gives Tom Hanks a run for his money in this Big -esque coming-of-age dramedy about a girl who wakes up from her traumatic 13th birthday party to find she’s 30, flirty, and thriving. She quickly learns growing up is hard to do, especially when you do it overnight.

Rent it on Amazon Prime Video

Donnie Darko (2001)

After Jake Gyllenhaal ’s titular sad boy narrowly survives a freak accident, he’s left with disturbing visions of a 6-foot-tall rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days. If you don’t totally understand this time-bending film, don’t worry: its stars don’t either . Donnie Darko ’s perplexing final moments are part of its charm.

Watch it on HBO Max

Looper (2012)

Rian Johnson ’s sci-fi action thriller takes place in a not-so-distant future where mobsters punish those they don’t like by sending them back in time to be killed by a futuristic assassin known as a “looper.” When one of those hired guns (a prosthetic nose-wearing Joseph Gordon-Levitt) comes face-to-face with his older self ( Bruce Willis ), he ends up on a wild goose chase to save his future without unraveling his past.

Watch it on Netflix

About Time (2013)

When Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) learns he has the power to travel back in time, he can’t resist making a few tiny tweaks to his past. He soon discovers that even the smallest changes have big consequences in this weepy Brit rom-com directed by Love Actually helmer Richard Curtis .

Happy Death Day (2017)

In this slasher film, often described as “ Groundhog’s Day meets Scream ,” a college student, played by Jessica Rothe, must solve her own murder if she wants to live to see the next day.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted ( Keanu Reeves ) hurtle through time and space in a cosmic phone booth, meeting historical dudes who can help them ace their high school history paper. The best part is that when you’re done with this one, you can keep the adventure going with its sequels: 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music . Pretty excellent, right?

Run Lola Run (1998)

Lola (Franka Potente) —who stands out with fire engine-red hair—only has 20 minutes to secure enough money to save her boyfriend from a Berlin crime boss. This German experimental thriller isn’t your typical time-loop film, but Lola’s ability to learn from her past mistakes to save her love will make you happy that she’s running a marathon, not a sprint.

See You Yesterday (2019)

In this Spike Lee -produced film, high schooler C.J. Walker (Eden Duncan-Smith) uses a backpack time machine to save her brother from being killed by a police officer. But altering the events of the past have consequences that not even a science prodigy can anticipate.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

This sweet sci-fi rom-com starts with a classified ad from Kenneth (Mark Duplass), a grocery-store worker looking for a partner to travel back in time with. “Safety not guaranteed,” he warns. While some write him off as crazy or paranoid, disillusioned college grad-turned-alt weekly intern Darius ( Aubrey Plaza ) might be willing to risk it all for a chance to roam the universe with him.

Arrival (2016)

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama , which stars Amy Adams as a celebrated linguist trying to communicate with an intelligent alien race, plays with time in ways we won’t dare spoil here. Suffice to say that the film’s twist ending will make you rethink the entire movie.

Watch it on Hulu

Palm Springs (2020)

Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) found love in a hopeless place: a Palm Springs wedding that they’ve been forced to relive over and over again after getting stuck in a time loop. Both darkly hilarious and sweetly nihilistic, Palm Springs is a unique rom-com for those who don’t want to admit they like rom-coms.

How Scary Is Totally Killer , Prime Video’s Time-Traveling New Slasher Comedy?

It’s back to the future meets scream , but is it more ’80s action comedy or gory ’90s horror.

For die-hards, no horror movie can be too terrifying. But for you, a wimp, the wrong one can leave you miserable. Never fear, scaredies, because Slate’s Scaredy Scale is here to help. We’ve put together a highly scientific and mostly spoiler-free system for rating new horror movies, comparing them with classics along a 10-point scale. And because not everyone is scared by the same things—some viewers can’t stand jump scares, while others are haunted by more psychological terrors or can’t stomach arterial spurts—it breaks down each movie’s frights across three criteria: suspense, spookiness, and gore.

Grab your parachute pants and put your hair in a side ponytail, because this time we’re assessing Blumhouse’s new time-travel slasher for Prime Video, starring Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper from Mad Men , Sabrina from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ). Directed by Always Be My Maybe ’s Nahnatchka Khan, Totally Killer follows teenager Jamie (Shipka) as she journeys back in time to catch the mystery murderer who would go on to target her adolescent parents and their friends from the 1980s to the present day. The movie’s generous helpings of nostalgia, paired with its comedic tone and Halloween setting, make it a perfect watch for spooky season, though viewers should be aware that it does boast an R rating and a not-insubstantial body count. Mashable called it an “ R-rated Disney Channel Original Movie ,” which it hastened to add was a compliment, all of which seems about right. But is this really kiddie stuff, or is it more like the kind of teen bloodbath that has left generations afraid to answer the phone ? Let’s take a stab at breaking it all down.

Any movie emulating ’80s horror is bound to have at least a handful of jump scares here and there, and Totally Killer is no exception. Luckily for those with naturally higher heart rates, the movie keeps those to just a few, at some pretty predictable moments. It’s about as suspenseful as you would expect of a movie with a sardonic lead whose trip into the past leaves her kvetching about missing Wi-Fi, other characters’ poor understanding of consent, and the disappointing quality of ’80s weed. Which is to say, it’s more funny than nerve-racking.

Totally Killer may not be especially frightening, but it is a slasher, and there’s no shortage of slashing: The villain, dubbed the Sweet 16 Killer, is known for knifing his victims, well, 16 times. To the movie’s credit, a good portion of the bloodshed happens off-screen. We might watch the killer perform the stabbing motion , but we don’t always see the blade meet the body. That being said, there are plenty of times when we definitely do witness the butcher slaughter his prey, and, however the deed itself is shot, there’s always a bloody corpse left in view after the masked assassin finishes the job. Of these three categories, I’m most desensitized to gore, but the sounds of the executions still sometimes made me grimace, even if the gruesome act was hidden by the camera.

This movie spends a good chunk of its run time laughing at ’80s scary movies and the ’80s in general. Jamie balks at the high school’s lack of security when, after just saying she’s an exchange student, she’s handed a schedule. She hitches a ride from a stranger, a mother with young children who is surprised when Jamie hesitates at her offer to drive her to the high school and proceeds to smoke in the car the entire way. And Jamie’s parents and their friends aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box, more concerned with pot brownies and sex than the brutal deaths of their friends. Not to mention, she gets to do all of this because of time travel. All of which is to say: The movie isn’t taking any of this too seriously. The most that stays with you when it’s over are the jokes, not the shivers. Still, a serial killer is a serial killer, and that’s a threat that’s at least more real than time travel, so I give this a modest 2.

Totally Killer is a good mix of traditional horror, meta humor, and Reagan-era throwbacks, all peppered with some f-bombs. It’s more entertaining than it is hair-raising, which is good news for all the Shipka fans who may be accustomed to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ’s fairly mild shocks. However, those suffering from hemophobia—or still scarred by ’80s fashion—might have to occasionally cover their eyes.

Additional chart photos by PBS, Buena Vista Distribution Company, Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures, Paramount Pictures, New Line Cinema, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, IFC Films, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Lions Gate Films, Pixar, TWC-Dimension, and Sony Pictures.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (May 2024)

Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You.

Amazon Prime Video is starting off strong in May with several new additions to its library of movies, including the premiere of the original romantic drama The Idea of You . Last year’s underrated Christmas drama The Holdovers is also now streaming on Prime Video. And as far as we’re concerned, a good drama is never out of season.

Prime Video lost a handful of movies at the end of April, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza is only sticking around through the end of the weekend. But everything else on our list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now is still available. Just keep reading, and you can make plans to watch any of the films that you want to see this month.

We’ve also put together guides to the best shows on Prime Video , the best movies on Hulu , the best movies on Netflix , the best new movies to stream , and the best movies on Disney+ .

Editor’s Pick

The idea of you (2024) new.

The irony of the premise of The Idea of You is that the romantic entanglement of Solène Marchand ( Eileen ‘s Anne Hathaway) with boy band lead singer Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) would probably be more of a fantasy for Solène’s daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), than for Solène herself. But one unplanned encounter between Solène and Hayes soon leads to several others.

There is an age gap between Solène and Hayes that does come up in the film, but the bigger issue between them is the celebrity gap. As long as Hayes is a world-famous musician, he and Solène may never be able to enjoy a normal romance without being hounded by the press.

Paul Giamatti stars as Paul Hunham, an unpopular and curmudgeonly teacher at Barton Academy boarding school in 1970. Hunham is forced to spend his Christmas vacation as a chaperone for the students who don’t have anywhere to go for the holidays.

Despite himself, Hunham starts empathizing and bonding with one of his students, Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), as well as Barton cafeteria manager, Mary Lamb (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who is grieving over the loss of her son. Through them, Hunham rediscovers his compassion, even though it may cost him what’s left of his teaching career.

Polite Society (2023) new

Polite Society had a very under-the-radar release in 2023, but it has a chance to break out on Prime Video in 2024. The film stars Priya Kansara as Ria Khan, a British-Pakistani teenager who has grand dreams of becoming a martial artist and a stunt woman. No one is a bigger supporter of Ria’s dreams than her older sister, Lena Khan (Ritu Arya), at least until Lena falls for Salim Shah (Akshay Khanna) and agrees to move away to Singapore and marry him.

Salim instantly rubs Ria the wrong way, and so does Salim’s mother, Raheela Shah (Nimra Bucha). Against all evidence, Ria is convinced that the Shah family has sinister intentions toward her sister. Is Ria delusional? Or will she really have to go full action heroine and save her sister from the evil in-laws?

How to Date Billy Walsh (2024) new

You’re going to recognize a lot of familiar elements in How To Date Billy Walsh . That’s especially true when it comes to the two best friends, Archie ( Heartstopper ‘s Sebastian Croft) and Amelia (Charithra Chandran), who never became a couple growing up because the former is too timid to tell the latter that he loves her. Enter Billy Walsh (Tanner Buchanan), the cool new American transfer student whom all of the girls pine for, including Amelia.

To keep Amelia from dating Billy, Archie uses a fake dating app to give her intentionally bad advice. Unfortunately for Archie, his attempts to sabotage the relationship only bring Billy and Amelia together. And if Archie can’t be honest with his crush, then he’s going to lose her forever.

The Notebook (2004) new

The adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, and it remains a popular choice among romance lovers. It’s not as if we haven’t seen star-crossed lover stories before, but the tale of Noah Calhoun ( The Fall Guy ‘s Ryan Gosling) and Allison Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) resonates in part because the movie shows how their love began and how it endured before ending decades later.

In the early 1940s, Noah and Allison’s bond is challenged by both her family and the onset of World War II. Regardless, Noah and Allison choose love above everything else, even if it means Allison has to go against the wishes of her family. Screen legends James Garner and Gena Rowlands also have supporting roles in the film that may draw a few tears from your eyes before the credits roll.

Wrath of Man (2021) new

Be honest: If you were a bad guy in an action movie and you saw Jason Statham ( The Beekeeper ) walking in your direction, wouldn’t you run the other way? Something like this actually happens in Wrath of Man , which reunites Statham with director Guy Ritchie. Statham plays Patrick Hill, a new hire for Fortico, an armored car security company.

Patrick’s new co-workers initially think that he’s a joke until he ruthlessly dispatches a gang of armored robbers. During another attempted robbery, the crooks literally run away when they see Patrick. While this draws suspicion about Patrick’s identity, his co-workers should be less concerned about who he is and more worried about what his real agenda is. Especially if Patrick finds what he’s looking for …

Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)

Minions: The Rise of Gru is the origin story of Despicable Me ’s main character, Gru (Steve Carell), but probably not in the way that you expect. In the 1970s, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and the rest of the Minions (Pierre Coffin) have all latched on to Gru as their new master. Gru himself has ambitions of being the biggest supervillain in the world so he can join the Vicious 6.

Unfortunately for Gru, his attempts to join the most notorious gang of bad guys spectacularly backfires, which turns his idols in the Vicious 6 into his deadliest enemies. To defeat them, Gru and the Minions will have to turn to the Vicious 6’s former leader, Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin).

Música (2024)

Almost everyone can hear a song in their head, but the lead character of Música , Rudy (Rudy Mancuso), can’t stop hearing it. Rudy suffers from synesthesia, which means music is an ever-present part of his life, even when he would probably prefer silence.

Mancuso is a YouTube star who co-wrote and directed this coming-of-age romance, which finds Rudy torn between two women: Isabella (Camila Mendes) and Haley (Francesca Reale). Luckily — or perhaps unluckily — Rudy has a friend, Anwar (J.B. Smoove), who can give him some advice and guidance. But ultimately, Rudy has to make his own choices in life, including whom he really wants to be with.

Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (2023)

If you thought that Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain was a Peacock original movie, then you’re not wrong. But everything on Peacock tends to end up on Prime Video. Witness (1985)

At the peak of his stardom, Harrison Ford was more than just Indiana Jones or Han Solo . Witness is a thriller that cast Ford as John Book, a detective in the Philadelphia police department who is given an unusual case to investigate. A young Amish boy, Samuel Lapp (Lukas Haas), has accidentally witnessed the murder of an undercover cop.

Much to his alarm, Book realizes that the killer was another cop, and that the corruption in his department may threaten both Samuel and his widowed mother, Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis). Book’s suspicions are confirmed when he’s nearly taken out by one of his fellow officers, which forces him to hide with Rachel and Samuel among the Amish. And even though Book and Rachel are from very different worlds, they can’t hide their obvious attraction to each other.

Rob Roy (1995)

In the 18th century, Rob Roy MacGregor (Neeson) is the chief of Clan MacGregor and deeply devoted to his people. Rob Roy won’t even bear false witness against someone he doesn’t know when the Marquess of Montrose, James Graham (John Hurt), attempts to blackmail MacGregor over an unpaid debt.

The Marquess’ friend, Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth), is responsible for the theft of the money that Rob Roy needed to pay his debt, and for terrorizing his family at Graham’s request. In response, Rob Roy and his followers wage a systematic campaign against the Marquess that turns MacGregor into a folk hero to his people.

Road House (2024)

In this remake of the popular 1989 movie starring Patrick Swayze, Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Elwood Dalton as a former UFC fighter who has fallen on some hard times. Road House  gives Elwood a chance for redemption when Frankie (Jessica Williams) recruits him to be the bouncer at her bar, which shares its name with the title of the film.

Elwood’s fighting skills go a long way towards keeping order at The Road House, much to the anger of a local mobster, Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen). Elwood took care of Brandt’s regular goons with ease, but he’ll have a much harder time handling Knox, an enforcer for Brandt who is played by an actual UFC fighter, Conor McGregor.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)

It shouldn’t surprise you to hear that there is another wedding in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3  — it’s just not between the main characters, Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) and Ian Miller ( Sex and the City ‘ s John Corbett). Through two sequels and one non-canon sitcom spinoff, Toula and Ian are still together. But they don’t know that their daughter, Paris Miller (Elena Kampouris), is struggling with both her love life and her academic pursuits in college.

Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father, Gus Portokalos, in the previous films, passed away in 2021. That’s why a lot of this film deals with the family struggling with their grief over the loss of Gus as the extended clan travels to Greece to fulfill his last wishes. This turns out to be more difficult than they imagined, as his childhood friends have scattered, and some unrelated relationship dramas are coming to the surface.

Frida (2024)

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter who didn’t find fame or accolades until two decades after she died. The new documentary Frida  takes an extensive look back at Kahlo’s well-documented life and adds some modern flourishes, including animation on a few of the artist’s self-portraits.

More importantly, the film shares the words of Kahlo herself to shape the narrative and give her a voice in her own story. Frida Kahlo was one of the most distinctive voices in art in the 20th century, and the life she lived was just as important and interesting as her creations. Through this film, a new generation may come to appreciate that.

Ricky Stanicky (2024)

The first thing that you need to know about the movie called Ricky Stanicky is that there is no Ricky. He’s just someone who was made up by three friends — Dean ( The Iron Claw ‘s Zac Efron), Wes (Jermaine Fowler), and JT (Andrew Santino) — as a convenient scapegoat for the last two decades. But when “Ricky” causes Dean to miss the birth of his child, the trio’s significant others demand to finally meet him.

That’s why Dean hires a washed-up actor, Rod (John Cena), to pretend to be Ricky just long enough to fool their friends and family. The problem is that Rod not only loves playing Ricky, but he does it too well and he even lands a job that may keep him permanently in their lives. If the truth about Ricky gets out, then Dean, Wes, and JT are going to pay the price for everything they’ve done.

Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)

The hit video game series Five Nights At Freddy’s was also a big success with moviegoers last fall. For this adaptation, Josh Hutcherson steps into the role of Mike Schmidt, a man who can barely hold down a job or provide a home for his younger sister, Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail). Out of desperation, Mike takes a job as the night shift guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a restaurant that’s been abandoned for decades.

With no one else that he can trust to watch over Vanessa, Josh brings her to work with him. That turns out to be a terrible mistake, because at night, the animatronics come to life. And while Freddy and his mechanical friends like Vanessa, they’re somewhat murderous toward Mike and anyone else who stumbles upon their secret.

Road to Perdition (2002)

About two decades before he starred in The CW’s Superman & Lois series, Tyler Hoechlin appeared in a much darker comic book adaptation, Road To Perdition . Tom Hanks plays Michael Sullivan, a mob hitman during the Great Depression who is forced to go on the run shortly after his son, Michael Sullivan Jr. (Hoechlin), witnesses his father and Connor Rooney (future James Bond Daniel Craig) murder another local crime figure.

Connor is also the son of a mob boss, John Rooney (Paul Newman), who favors Michael Sr. over his own flesh and blood. That’s why Connor had Michael’s wife and other son murdered, before ordering an assassin, Harlen Maguire (Jude Law), to track down Michael and Michael Jr. before they can make new lives for themselves.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

The TMNT have been reinvented numerous times over the last four decades. But the unique thing about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem  is that it focuses on them as believable teenagers. Donatello (Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), and Raphael (Brady Noon) may be ninja turtles, but what they really want are some human friends who are their own age.

Despite the disapproval of their adoptive father, Splinter (Jackie Chan), the turtles meet and befriend a human girl, April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri). The turtles also believe that they can win over humanity if they become heroes. However, their first real test is Superfly (Ice Cube) and his army of mutants. And even the TMNT are outnumbered and outmatched against them.

Giannis: The Marvelous Journey (2024)

In 2022, the Disney+ original movie Rise was a dramatized version of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s journey to the NBA from his humble beginnings. However, it’s one thing to see that version and another to hear Antetokounmpo share his story in his own words in the sports documentary Giannis: The Marvelous Journey .

Long before Antetokounmpo led the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA championship and became one of the best players in the game, he and his family were illegal Nigerian immigrants in Greece who faced vicious discrimination that Antetokounmpo clearly still feels wounded by. But despite the adversity, Antetokounmpo achieved his dreams. It’s hard not to be inspired by that story.

Mo’s plans are upended when the stagecoach she is traveling with comes under attack by Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell) and his gang.

The survivors of the attack manage to capture Tommy and drive off his men. In order to salvage their trek west, most of the survivors head out to bring someone back so they can claim the bounty on Tommy’s head. That leaves Mo with the unenviable task of standing guard over Tommy and preventing his gang from rescuing him. When a stranger named Will Clay (Michael K. Williams) comes along, he presents himself as an ally to Mo. But can anyone really be trusted, especially when blood and money are on the line?

The Other Zoey (2023)

The Other Zoey is not a remake of the Sandra Bullock rom-com While You Were Sleeping . But romantic comedy fans may notice some similarities between the two. Josephine Langford stars as Zoey Miller, a high school student who is definitely not the girlfriend of soccer star Zach MacLaren (Drew Starkey), whose girlfriend is also named Zoey (Maggie Thurmon).

When Zach suffers a head injury that gives him partial amnesia, he mistakes Zoey for his girlfriend, and his doctors warn her not to upset him with the truth. So Zoey carries on the deception and gets closer to Zach on a lavish vacation. At the same time, Zoey also feels attracted to Zach’s cousin, Miles Maclaren (Archie Renaux), who shares many of her views about love and life. So, which guy does Zoey really want? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.

In short order, Dante destroys the team’s reputation and hurts the people Dom cares about most. And Dante is only getting started, as the real suffering hasn’t begun yet.

The Passenger (2023)

It’s been said that “a good friend will help you move, but a true friend will help you hide a body.” Benson (Kyle Gallner) may have taken that expression a little bit too literally in The Passenger . After witnessing his work buddy, Randolph “Randy” Bradley (Johnny Berchtold), get bullied by their co-workers, Benson snaps and murders everyone but Randy.

Suddenly Randy finds himself riding shotgun with an absolute lunatic, and he truly doesn’t know what Benson will do next. If Randy can’t find a way out, then it might be his body that gets ditched by Benson.

Role Play (2023)

Emma ( The Flight Attendant ‘s Kaley Cuoco) and Dave Brackett (David Oyelowo) are just about as happy as a couple could be in Prime Video’s Role Play . The Bracketts have two children and a beautiful home in a New Jersey suburb. What they’re lacking is the passion in the bedroom that they used to have before starting a family.

For their anniversary, Dave and Emma take a trip to New York and indulge in some role play. That turns out to be a mistake when Bob Kellerman (Bill Nighy) blows Emma’s cover and exposes her as an international assassin. Now, Emma has to use her skills to protect her family and keep her marriage to Dave intact.

Humanity’s future looks bleak in Prime Video’s Foe , but at least Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal) have each other. Or do they? Their bonds of marriage are tested when Junior is selected to be among the lucky few to live and work on OuterMore, the orbiting habitat that may be humanity’s best hope of survival.

However, Hen is not selected for the program, even though a stranger named Terrance (Aaron Pierre) promises Junior that Hen will be well cared for in his absence by a special companion. Yet, as the vetting process drags on, Junior becomes convinced that Terrance will be the one living with his wife while he’s stuck in space.

Unfortunately for Noah, the car turns out to be Mirage (Pete Davidson), one of the Autobots hiding on Earth. And while Mirage is eager to make friends with Noah, Autobot leader Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) is not as trusting.

Thanks to a discovery made by museum research intern Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback), she and Noah are drawn into the Autobots’ war with the Terrorcons, who want to bring the planet-killing Transformer Unicron (Colman Domingo) to Earth. In order to save the world, Noah and Elena will have to help the Autobots find the Maximals and their leader, Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman).

But when those plans fall apart, Griffin drunkenly comes home to Margot’s place because it was so easy to mistake for his own.

Instead of being angry at a stranger sleeping in her bed, Margot uses their meeting as an opportunity to ask Griffin to pretend to be Kip when she attends the wedding of her sister, Carrie Hayes (Britt Robertson). However, neither Kip nor Clementine are completely out of the picture, and it may take an act of fate to bring Griffin and Margot together as a real couple.

Felix’s immediate family, including his parents, Lady Elspeth Catton (Rosamund Pike) and Sir James Catton (Richard E. Grant), as well as Felix’s sister, Venetia Catton (Alison Oliver), are very welcoming towards Oliver. However, Felix’s cousin, Farleigh Start ( Gran Turismo ‘s Archie Madekwe), is immediately suspicious about Oliver’s motives. It will be a long summer at Saltburn, and Oliver will have to go out of his way to earn his place there.

Asteroid City (2023)

When it comes to Wes Anderson movies, you can always bet that they will be emotionally moving and deeply weird. Asteroid City  is no exception, and it seems to take place in a world all of its own. Jason Schwartzman stars as a newly widowed father, Augie Steenbeck, who has brought his children to the annual Junior Stargazer convention. Despite the fact that Augie is still mourning his late wife, he is immediately drawn to Midge Campbell (Scarlett Johansson), an actress who brought her daughter, Dinah (Grace Edwards) to the event.

But shortly after her engagement, Allison causes a car accident that claims the lives of Nathan’s sister, Molly (Nichelle Hines), and her husband, Jesse (Toby Onwumere).

One year later, Allison is attempting to kick her addiction to painkillers when she reunites with Nathan and Molly’s father, Daniel (Morgan Freeman). As Daniel attempts to forgive Allison, they reenter each other’s lives and she tries to make amends with Ryan (Celeste O’Connor), the daughter that Molly and Jesse left behind.

Bye Bye Barry (2023)

In the late 1990s, few NFL players were more exciting to watch than Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders. On the field, Sanders moved with uncommon speed and agility, and he was well on his way toward the all-time NFL rushing record when he abruptly retired from the game and never played another down.

Bye Bye Barry is based on Sanders’ book of the same name, and it offers his account of why he left behind an incredibly lucrative career. Several other NFL luminaries also weigh in on Sanders’ legacy, but the film is at its most enticing when Sanders himself speaks about what he was going through at that key moment in his life.

Memento (2000)

Christopher Nolan made his name in Hollywood with Memento , a brilliantly twisted story that is told out of order. L.A. Confidential ’s Guy Pearce stars as Leonard Shelby, a man who is out to avenge the murder of his wife. The problem is that Leonard can’t make any new long-term memories, which is why his body is covered with tattoos designed to lead him to his wife’s killer.

Every face Leonard sees is the face of a stranger, so each time he meets Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Teddy (Joe Pantoliano), he’s unsure of who he can trust. And everyone who knows about Leonard’s condition takes advantage of it, including Leonard himself.

Silver Dollar Road (2023)

I Am Not Your Negro director Raoul Peck helms a new documentary, Silver Dollar Road , that may leave a sick feeling in your stomach. The name of the film comes from a stretch of waterfront property in North Carolina that has been owned by a Black family, the Reels, for over a century.

Mitchell Reels purchased the land decades ago, but the ownership was divided among his many heirs. This leads to a rude awakening for the family members still living on the land when one of the relatives sells their share out from under them. Melvin and Licurtis Reels refused to leave their homes on the land and they spent eight years in jail for that. Meanwhile, Mamie Reels Ellison and her niece Kim Renee Duhon fight to hold on to Silver Dollar Road. There may not be a happy ending to this story, but it has to be told.

The Burial (2023)

Amazon Studios’ The Burial is based on a real story that happened in 1995. Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones), the owner of his family’s funeral home business, made a handshake deal with Raymond Loewen (Bill Camp), the head of the Loewen Group. However, Loewen failed to hold up his end of the deal, which left O’Keefe no other choice but to take him to court.

O’Keefe turns to a successful lawyer, Willie E. Gary ( The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ‘s Jamie Foxx), to represent him in the case. And despite their numerous differences, O’Keefe and Gary form a bond and an unusual friendship as they battle Loewen in court.

Renfield (2023)

Everyone has stories about working for bad bosses, but Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has a terrible boss story that can top all of them. In the horror comedy Renfield , the title character has been the manservant for Dracula (Nicolas Cage) for over a century, and he’s sick of it. When his master is injured by vampire hunters and in need of rest, Renfield takes the initiative to find ways to break his codependent link to Dracula.

Along the way, Renfield attends a self-help group and he even seems to be enamored with a traffic cop named Rebecca (Awkwafina). But when Dracula recovers, he’s less than pleased to learn what Renfield has been up to…and there’s going to be hell to pay.

Totally Killer (2023)

Amazon Studios’ Totally Killer seems to welcome comparisons to Back to the Future , and it’s one of the more unique blends of sci-fi, comedy, and horror. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ’s Kiernan Shipka stars as Jamie, a teenager who is very familiar with the story about how her mom, Pam (Julie Bowen), survived the Sweet Sixteen Killer 35 years ago. It’s something that Jamie has heard about many times in her life.

When the Sweet Sixteen Killer returns in the present, Jamie finds herself transported back in time to 1987, when her much younger mother (Olivia Holt) was apparently one of the mean girls in school. Yet if Jamie can’t protect Pam in the past then she may not have a future to go home to.

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (2023)

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant takes place in the not-too-distant past of 2018, during the War in Afghanistan. Despite initially distrusting his new interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), Master Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) comes to respect him because of the way that Ahmed looks out for his troops. And when Kinley is incapacitated and his fellow soldiers are killed, Ahmed rises to the occasion and personally fights the Taliban to get Kinley to safety.

Ahmed’s act of heroism doesn’t win him favor with the U.S. government, which fails to take Ahmed and his family to safety even as the Taliban hunt them down for revenge. Kinley is so outraged by the injustice that he returns to Afghanistan to personally save Ahmed… if he can.

A Million Miles Away (2023)

Prime Video’s new movie, A Million Miles Away , was originally a Netflix film before landing at Amazon. And it reached No. 1 on Prime Video’s movie chart in the U.S. in its debut week. The film is based on the autobiography of José M. Hernández, who became the first-ever Mexican-American astronaut at NASA.

Michael Peña plays Hernández, while Rosa Salazar plays his wife, Adela Hernández. The biopic chronicles Hernández’s journey from being child in a struggling migrant family to his education, training, and family life on his way to achieving a dream that few have ever attained. This is an inspirational tale, and it really is emotionally moving at times.

A Thousand and One (2023)

Very few people saw A Thousand and One when it was in theaters in early 2023, but you might be hearing a lot more about it during Oscar season. Teyana Taylor headlines this drama as Inez de la Paz, a woman who is determined to provide for her 6-year-old son, Terry (Aaron Kingsley Adetola), despite abandoning him years earlier.

With Terry’s consent, Inez kidnaps him from foster custody and does her best to raise him alongside her husband, Lucky (Will Catlett). As Terry grows into a teen (Aven Courtney) and a young man (Josiah Cross), he discovers that he may truly have a future. But a secret from Inez’s past may destroy their family.

Inside (2023)

Willem Dafoe is such a natural movie villain that it’s rare to see him hold down a film as the protagonist. Inside  casts Dafoe as an elite art thief named Nemo, and he is truly passionate about his work. But during a heist to rob a very wealthy art collector, Nemo finds himself trapped by the high-tech security system of a Manhattan high-rise penthouse.

The most alarming thing about this is that no one comes inside the penthouse after the lockdown. That’s why Nemo spends weeks without food, and only some access to water. This luxury apartment has become his prison, and now Nemo has to find a way out in order to simply survive.

Sitting in Bars With Cake is loosely based on a true story, and it takes a darker turn when Corinne is stricken with a life-threatening sickness. Although Jane attempts to stand by her friend, the burden of Corinne’s diagnosis may compromise their bond.

However, they soon find that Forge is involved with a plan that threatens everyone in Neverwinter, and only Edgin’s group can stop it from happening.

Bones and All (2022)

Believe it or not, Bones and All  is not an elaborate plot to lure a disgraced actor back from the Cayman Islands. It really is a cannibal romance story starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell as young lovers, Lee and Maren, who share certain urges to eat human flesh. The film treats cannibals as if they were vampires, and they know each other by scent.

If it wasn’t for the great chemistry between Chalamet and Russell, this wouldn’t work at all. But sometimes chemistry is all it takes to make a romance movie click, even if the cannibal angle is really reaching at times.

Knock at the Cabin (2023)

Perhaps there’s a knock, knock joke somewhere in the premise for Knock at the Cabin , but M. Night Shyamalan’s movies aren’t really built for humor. This story is about a young girl named Wen (Kristen Cui), and her two dads, Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge). Their idyllic vacation is cut short when four intruders hold them captive and make an incredible claim.

Leonard Brocht ( Guardians of the Galaxy ‘s Dave Bautista ), Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird), Redmond (Rupert Grint), and Adriane (Abby Quinn) really believe that the world will end if someone in Wen’s family isn’t sacrificed. And they’re willing to give their lives to prove it.

Babylon (2022)

Director Damien Chazelle (La La Land ) took a big swing with Babylon , a high-budget period film set during Hollywood’s transition away from silent movies in the 1920s. Brad Pitt headlines the movie as Jack Conrad, an actor whose star power is on the wane as actress Nellie LaRoy ( Barbie ‘s Margot Robbie ) lands her big break.

Manuel “Manny” Torres (Diego Calva) has Hollywood ambitions of his own, and he forges a connection with Nellie while riding his own wave of success in the studio system. But the path to fame is rocky, and Nellie may suffer a serious fall before ever fully achieving her dreams.

Till (2022)

Till was largely overlooked by moviegoers in 2022 despite being a powerful look back at a very ugly period in our nation’s history. In 1955, a Black boy named Emmett Till (Jalyn Hall) allegedly whistles at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant (Haley Bennett). This quickly escalates out of control as Till was kidnapped, beaten, and lynched over the perceived offense.

Mamie Till (Danielle Deadwyler) is devastated at the loss of her son. Devastated and angry. Rather than letting Emmett’s death be buried, Mamie pushes to get justice for her murdered son, even when the law seemingly can’t hold his murderers accountable.

Interstellar (2014)

Director Christopher Nolan delivers again in Interstellar , one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade . In the near future, Earth is dying and humanity desperately needs a new home. Former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) reluctantly leaves his children, Murphy “Murph” Cooper (Mackenzie Foy) and Tom Cooper ( Dune: Part Two ‘ s Timothée Chalamet), behind to join Dr. Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) on a search for an inhabitable world.

Unfortunately for Cooper, time passes differently for him in space as his children grow older on Earth. And if Cooper ever wants to make it back home, he needs to solve a scientific mystery that has haunted Murph (Jessica Chastain) for years.

Creed III (2023)

Michael B. Jordan makes his directorial debut with Creed III , which theoretically could work as the end of the Rocky movies. At this point in his life, Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Jordan) has pretty much done everything he wanted in boxing, so he retires to spend more time with his wife, Bianca Taylor-Creed (Tessa Thompson), and their daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent).

Unfortunately for Donnie, the good times end when his former friend, Damian “Diamond Dame” Anderson (Jonathan Majors), renters his life. Years ago, Dame was sent to prison, and it was largely Donnie’s fault. Now that Dame is back, he’s going to push Donnie until he gets the chance for payback in the ring. And this may not be a fight that Donnie can win.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)

Literature is filled with stories about genies tricking mortals into making wishes that ultimately harm them. This is something that Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is keenly aware of in Three Thousand Years of Longing . Alithea is an aging British scholar who hasn’t quite worked out what she wants from life. But Alithea isn’t sure she can believe what she sees and hears when she suddenly finds herself face-to-face with a real Djinn (Idris Elba) who wishes to be free from his enslavement.

To win Alithea’s trust and to entice her to make three wishes, the Djinn shares his centuries-long tale of heartbreak and desire. And much to Alithea’s surprise, this inspires her to make a major change in her life.

Prepare for the origin story of Michael Jordan’s shoes. Don’t worry, Air is more compelling than it sounds . And while it is the story of how the Air Jordan sneakers came into being, it’s also the story of how executives at Nike realized that teaming up with Jordan was a once-in-a-generation opportunity. But first, they have to convince Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis).

Ben Affleck directed the film and stars as Phil Knight, one of the co-founders of Nike. At Phil’s behest, talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) is tasked with turning around the company’s basketball operation. And as soon as Nike gets behind the Jordan pitch, the future of the company is on the line.

Judy Blume Forever (2023)

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Amazon Studios’ new documentary Judy Blume Forever is that the author herself, Judy Blume, is not only still alive, but she was able to be an active participant in the movie. The film essentially tells her life story, often in her own words, as it chronicles her journey from a housewife to a beloved children’s author whose books are still widely read.

Several famous commentators also share their thoughts about Blume, including Molly Ringwald, Lena Dunham, Anna Konki, Samantha Bee, Mary H.K. Choi, and Jacqueline Woodson. But the ones who really stand out are the ordinary women whose lives were deeply touched by Blume and her stories.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

Did you know that Star Wars and dozens of other films were greatly influenced by the French sci-fi comic Valérian and Laureline by Pierre Christin? However, the comic didn’t make it to the big screen until director Luc Besson adapted it into Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets . True to its title, the space station Alpha is indeed the product of aliens from thousands of worlds, and it is kept under the watchful eye of the United Human Federation.

Two of the station’s primary operatives, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), try to keep the peace before they unknowingly stumble upon a conspiracy that could bring down Alpha itself. Laureline also has her hands full keeping Valerian’s amorous intentions toward her in check, even though his attraction to her isn’t one-sided.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Top Gun: Maverick is the most popular movie of 2022 and one of biggest blockbusters in years. And after cleaning up at the box office, the Top Gun sequel is coming in for a landing on Prime Video. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a test pilot-turned-instructor who doesn’t quite have the same fire that he had in the ’80s.

While teaching the next generation of Top Gun pilots, Maverick also finds himself in conflict with one of his students, Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. However, Maverick and his pilots will need to find common ground as they are drawn into a new mission with high stakes and breathtaking flying sequences.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021)

I want you back (2022), somebody i used to know (2023), manchester by the sea (2016), good night oppy (2022).

In the same way that audiences fell in love with Pixar’s cute Wall•E , watching  Good Night Oppy elicits a similar response, drawing you into the gushy human emotion surrounding a robot roaming Mars 50 million miles away. But that’s because this documentary is as much about the people at NASA that made the Opportunity Mars Exploration Rover mission possible as it is about the rover itself. Narrated by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ‘ s Angela Basset, Good Night Oppy  tells the inspiring story of Opportunity, a six-wheeled, solar-powered vehicle that touched down on the Red Planet in January of 2004 and was supposed to roam and explore the landscape for a pre-determined 90 days. But beyond anyone’s expectations, Oppy’s mission endured for nearly 15 years before going dark. Told through interviews with many of the scientists and engineers on the project, as well as archival footage, this is a feel-good doc not to be missed.

American Animals (2018)

Amazon's Prime Video Adds 129 Movies Today - Here's the 6 Best

By Phillip Swann The TV Answer Man –Follow me on  X .

Amazon’s Prime Video today has added 129 new movies to its Prime membership lineup. The list of classics is long here, but here’s the six best new films on Prime, in my humble opinion:

Malcolm X (1992)

Spike Lee’s evocative 1992 drama starring Denzel Washington as the 1960s civil rights leader is the director at the peak of his powers (Denzel, too.). The film chronicles the amazing life of Malcolm X from his days as a Detroit drug dealer to his transformation as a religious leader and civil rights icon. Beautiful film in more ways than one.

On the Waterfront (1954)

Marlon Brando is a force of nature as former boxer turned longshoreman Terry Malloy in this Eliz Kazan-directed allegory on the evils of Communism. Kazan, who provided names of purported Communist members to the U.S. House Commitee on Unamerican Activities in the 1950s, here uses his exceptional skills to portray Malloy as a hero when he turns states evidence against the corrupt union. Regardless of your views of Kazan and the politics of his time, the film is powerful and thought provoking. There are also great supporting performances from Rod Steiger as Malloy’s brother, Eva Marie Saint as his girl and Karl Malden as the neighborhood priest.

Psycho (1960)

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho changed moviegoers’ view of the horror genre with a mid-narrative twist that’s as frightening today as it was 64 years ago. The film follows Marion Crane, a secretary who embezzles money and checks into a remote motel run by the enigmatic Norman Bates. Hitchcock’s masterful direction, combined with Bernard Herrmann’s iconic score, creates an atmosphere of suspense that is palpable throughout the film.

Rear Window (1954)

Hitchcock exploits the human impulse to snoop with this suspenseful masterpiece starring Jimmy Stewart as a wheelchair-bound photographer who thinks he’s uncovered a murder after spying on his neighbors from his window. It’s a great film filled with subtle psychological messages about our worst and best instincts. (mostly worse).

Serpico (1973)

The drama is based on the real-life New York police officer Frank Serpico who exposed widespread corruption on the force. Al Pacino is at his messianic best as Serpico in this iconic film directed by Sidney Lumet. But the supporting cast is overflowing with some great New York-based actors including John Randolph, Judd Hirsch, Tony Roberts and F. Murray Abraham.

Fatal Attraction (1987)

The 1987 drama from director Adrian Lyne that did more to curb adultery than any 1,000 sermons. Michael Douglas plays an attorney whose life is turned upside down when he has an affair with a disturbed book editor (Glenn Close) who’s never met a rabbit she liked. The film is a taut and juicy depiction of what people will do when emotions are stretched and temptation is dangled.

Honorable mentions go to Airplane!, Some Like It Hot, Glory, 12 Angry Men, Rope, Panic Room, Gilda, Schindler’s List, Rolling Thunder, Shampoo, The Deer Hunter, The Big Chill, and Vertigo. (It’s a packed lineup!)

By Phillip Swann The TV Answer Man –Follow me on X. Amazon’s Prime Video today has added 129 new movies to its Prime membership lineup. The list of classics is long here, but here’s the six best new films on Prime, in my humble opinion: Malcolm X (1992) Spike Lee’s evocative 1992 drama starring Denzel Washington as the 1960s civil rights leader is the director at the peak of his powers (Denzel, too.). The film chronicles the amazing life of Malcolm X from his days as a Detroit drug dealer to his transformation as a religious leader and civil rights icon. […]

Amazon’s Latest Time-Travel Show Is Also An Epic Revenge Saga

Hate your deadbeat husband? Just travel through time.

time travel movies on amazon prime

Time travel is a classic plot device for a reason. Everyone wishes they could use hindsight to make smarter decisions, undo something they regret, or even take a second crack at their entire life. But we can’t do that, so we watch fictional characters use DeLoreans , phone booths , and hot tubs to explore the space-time continuum instead.

While time travel is used in all sorts of genres, its application in romance is unique. If you can go back and fix regrets, the one who got away (or the one you never should have been with at all) is sure to be on the top of the list. Those ideas are explored in a new time-travel series on Prime Video that combines sci-fi and K-drama in the best possible way.

Marry My Husband , based on the webtoon of the same name, is the story of Kang Ji-won (Park Min-young), a woman dying of cancer who comes home to discover her best friend and husband having an affair. She’s unintentionally murdered in the scuffle that follows, only to wake up in 2013 and discover she has a second shot at the last decade. Naturally, this means she can get revenge on her then-boyfriend and her best friend before they ever betray her.

But a time-travel story is only as good as the rules involved, and this series uses a conceit perfect for a K-drama plot. As Ji-won attempts to avoid little problems like a spilled cup of tea, she learns she can’t eliminate the bad things that happened to her in the past; she can only cause them to happen to someone else. That makes her mission clear: She needs to get her best friend to marry her future husband and deal with the deadbeat so she doesn’t have to.

What follows is a classic revenge plot full of schemes, secrets, and betrayal. Further complicating the drama is Ji-won’s boss, Yoo Ji-hyuk (Na In-woo). She knows he’ll go on to run the entire company, so when he shows a special interest in her work, she’s both intrigued by the possibilities of getting to know him and afraid of getting distracted from her plan. Little does she know that Ji-hyuk harbors his own secrets.

Even amid a complex time-travel plot, Marry My Husband makes time for swoon-worthy romance.

Even amid a complex time-travel plot, Marry My Husband makes time for swoon-worthy romance.

Marry My Husband offers clever time-travel plotting, as Ji-won uses knowledge of the future to make her past life better, but it also features all the hallmarks of a good K-drama: makeovers, flashbacks, and grand romantic gestures. While only six of the 16 episodes are out, the series is delivering on every level, and its two-episode-a-week release format means there’s never a long wait for more.

So whether you’re a Korean TV novice or an old pro, Marry My Husband earns its spot beside other great time-travel romances like About Time and The Time Traveler’s Wife. And who doesn’t love a little revenge with their romance?

Marry My Husband is streaming on Prime Video .

One of the best sci-fi movies of all time is about to leave Prime Video

Don't miss out on The Terminator

The Terminator

It doesn't get much more influential than this – one of the most era-defining sci-fi movies ever is about to leave the Amazon Prime Video streaming library.

The Terminator launched a franchise that survives to this day when it came out in 1984, and while it was greeted at the time as a shlocky flick, it's since been reappraised as one of the greatest action movies ever released.

That renewed wave of enthusiasm sees the movie now sitting on a bonafide 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes , something very few action movies from the 1980s can match.

The movie is only around on Amazon Prime Video until 1 May, though, giving you a matter of hours rather than days in which to watch it. Good news, though – it's only 1h 47m long, so you should be able to make light work of it.

The Terminator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the titular role, an assassin sent back in time as an agent of the robotic forces that will come to dominate the world. His mission is to kill Sarah Conner, played by Linda Hamilton, because she'll eventually be a leader of the human resistance movement.

It's a brilliant set-up, right from the top drawer where sci-fi is concerned, and the movie makes the most of it, with some unbelievably memorable moments – not least when Arnie first has to take clothes off a punk near where he arrives, stylishly nude and in the shape of his life.

The Terminator is also the first half of one of the greatest two-film sequences in any franchise – its sequel, Judgment Day , sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes to prove it.

Get the latest news, reviews, deals and buying guides on gorgeous tech, home and active products straight to your inbox.

So, if you're looking to understand a lot more about where the action sci-fi genre came from, this is a foundational movie to watch, and you've only got until 1 May to do so.

That'll be a bit of a blow to Prime Video's hopes to compete as the best streaming service , but at least there are some stunning new movies and shows coming to its library throughout May to make up for this loss.

Amazon Prime Day 2024: Here's what to expect, tips, and tricks

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Amazon Prime Day has grown into one of the biggest sales events of the year, with discounts rivaling those of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. With so many retailers selling on Amazon, Prime members can save on just about anything, from viral beauty products to new unlocked smartphones.

The best Prime Day deals we saw last year included all-time lows on brands like Apple, Vitamix, iRobot, Dyson, Crocs, and, of course, Amazon-owned products like the Fire TV , Kindle e-reader , and Echo smart speakers . We expect to see more of the same this year as well.

It'll be the first major deal holiday of the year, so it's an awesome chance to score summer discounts on big-ticket items and household staples. The retailer's 10th Prime Day event has officially been announced to arrive in July, but the actual days are still unknown. In the meantime, we're keeping tabs on all of the latest Prime Day news, and we'll keep you updated with our findings here.

  • Shop the latest deals at Amazon

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

Amazon Prime Day is officially coming this July, though the exact days have not yet been announced. In past years, it kicked off on the second Tuesday of the month. If Amazon follows the same trend, it will take place on July 9 and 10. We'll keep this story updated as more details are announced.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is the retailer's annual mega sale and one of the major benefits of Prime membership. It's a two-day sales event, usually during the summer, that features products from every category, from fashion staples to hot new tech.

Though it used to be a deal holiday of a much smaller scale, Prime Day has grown exponentially since the first one in 2015. Now, you can find almost everything on sale for all-time low prices, matching discounts we see during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

What should I buy during Amazon Prime Day?

Everything is fair game to buy during Amazon Prime Day. Whether you've been holding out on a pricey new TV or just need to stock up on toiletries, Prime Day is a good time to make your move.

Last year, we saw incredible prices on tech, including 4K TVs , Fire TV streaming devices , Apple products, Kindle e-readers , PC gaming accessories, Echo smart speakers , and top headphones picks. Prime Day tech deals featured brands like Logitech, Bose, Jabra, Sony, Roku, Samsung, TCL, and more.

If you're looking for style and beauty deals during Prime Day, last year, brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Tatcha, Laneige, Levi's, Carhartt, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Adidas, and Marc Jacobs all featured products at rare low prices. That means skincare, makeup, shoes, men's clothing, women's fashion, and accessories will all be available for less.

Home and kitchen products saw no shortage of Prime Day deals either, with big names like Dyson, Shark, iRobot, Philips, KitchenAid, Nespresso, Casper, Leesa, and OXO down to all-time lows for the event. So, whether you need an air fryer , robot vacuum , mattress , or just some sturdy mixing bowls, Prime Day is a good time to buy.

You don't need to be focused on fancy new gadgets or treatments to shop smart during Amazon Prime Day either. We also catch tons of affordable household essentials available for even less every year, like toilet paper, dish soap, doggy bags, and makeup wipes. These deals are sweet, since they save you money on stuff you needed to buy anyway.

How long do Prime Day deals last?

How long a Prime Day deal lasts differs between items, but in general, the best discounts will start during the event and end before the 48-hour holiday is over. Some will last the whole two days while others will only last one, so it's always wise to act on a good sale when you see it. Lightning deals especially go fast, the most popular of which dwindle away in less than an hour.

I always recommend buying a product you've had your eye on as soon as it's highlighted as a Prime Day deal. Regardless of how long it's set to last, oftentimes the best sales run out of stock, resulting in shipping dates being pushed out, or the deal no longer being offered at all. We'll be providing all of the deal context you need to shop confidently and quickly, so be sure to check our roundups of the best discounts when the event rolls around.

Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is locked to Prime members only. It's one of the major benefits of subscribing to the service, in addition to other perks like free two-day shipping and Prime Video streaming.

If you have yet to become a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to test it out. Once the official Prime Day dates have been announced, you can even time your free period to overlap with the sale, but it's not a guarantee since sometimes retailers will lock out free members from shopping the best deals.

Do other stores participate in Prime Day?

Although Prime Day is an Amazon-specific event, it's grown so large that other major retailers have started kicking off competing sales to overlap with it. No one has announced a competing Prime Day sale just yet, but if past years are any indication, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will likely be holding their own events.

These are definitely worth checking out; they often match the best deals on popular items you can find from Prime Day. We'll also be rounding these deals up so you can shop from the retailer that best suits you, whether you're a Target Circle cardholder, My Best Buy Plus member, or Walmart Plus subscriber.

Is Prime Day an international event?

Prime Day occurs in several other countries, but not all of them. Here's a list of countries where Prime Day will be available to shop:

  • Netherlands
  • Saudi Arabia
  • The United Arab Emirates
  • The United States
  • The United Kingdom

Want to see what Amazon has on sale right now? We've spotted some hefty price cuts on electronics, fashion, home, kitchen, laptops, and more on its main deals page .
