The breath of extremely fresh air, the silence of the forest, and the solid experience of cruising through the Mangrove River definitely is something you won’t be able to experience on a regular basis. So be prepared and make the most of it!

14. Dancalan Beach

With its prime location being near most of Sorsogon’s must-visit tourist attractions, spending your time at Dancalan Beach throughout your Sorsogon escapade is one of my recommended hacks! It’s located near Dansol where tourists can go whale shark watching, firefly watching, and many more.

Dancalan Beach

The creamy white sand, crescent-shaped beach, the crystalline waters, and the surrounding lush trees all promise an exciting beach getaway for everyone. Dancalan Beach is a public beach so anyone can book an all-day stay here for as low as P10! There are also cottages for rent as well as stalls scattered around the beach where you can buy food and drinks.

15. Mt. Pulog

Ah, finally! The perfect way to end our spectacular Sorsogon adventure is by conquering the peak of Mt. Pulog, one of the sought-after hiking destinations by several enthusiasts from different parts of the country. It’s actually coined as one of the Bicol region’s best-kept secret mountains.

Aside from the mesmerizing sight of the sea of clouds, the majestic Pacific Ocean, and the stunning landscapes of Sorsogon, it also has a breathtaking lake in the middle that really stuns everyone who witnesses it for the first time. It’s actually the main attraction of Mt. Pulog because it’s what makes it special as you can see from all the pictures of the mountain circling around the internet. The best part about hiking atop Mt. Pulog means that you can achieve it within a day. So be sure to bring your friends and fellow hikers and invite them to conquer one of the country’s beautiful mountains now!

Here are some of the top tourist spots in Sorsogon by town (alphabetical order):

Donsol

First-time in Donsol, Sorsogon: Home of the Whale Sharks

Donsol, a hidden gem nestled in the Philippines, where breathtaking encounters with gentle giants await. Located in the province of Sorsogon, Donsol is renowned as the whale shark capital of the world. Here, you have the unique opportunity to swim alongside these magnificent creatures, known as “butanding” in the local language. Beyond the awe-inspiring marine encounters, Donsol also offers pristine beaches, lush mangrove forests, and a charming coastal village atmosphere.

Whale shark-watching is more enjoyable when you go with your friends. You don’t have to know how to swim to join this activity. Life jackets, fins, and snorkeling gears are available at the local tourism office for you to rent. The best time to go there is during April, when it’s the Butanding Festival and many people go here. It’s easy to communicate with the locals, as they are fluent in English. At night, the festival has some games and attractions available at their town plaza.

Butanding Festival

Apart from snorkelling , another great activity in this remote town is firefly-watching at the river. The only light we had during the cruise was the full moon. There are no sounds except the wind blowing at the trees, the crickets, and the waves splashing on the side of the boat. The fireflies glow from afar like Christmas lights blinking on the trees. This is one beauty of nature that not many people can take a glimpse of. When you go to Donsol, be at the sea by day and at the river by night, you’ll sure to enjoy nature’s simple pleasures.

Tips when going to Donsol

Book a local agent if you don’t want to go through the hassle of booking for accommodations, especially in April, when there’s the local town festival. It is much cheaper to go on a group package and with ecotourism groups.

Rentals of gear are pretty cheap and affordable. Near the tourism office, there are shops for gear rental and even for souvenir shirts which are not expensive for a frequent traveler. Be mindful though, that going to Donsol is not about luxury but about nature appreciation. Facilities and lodgings may not come as five star ratings but they are comfortable enough for people who need a place to stay, eat and relax.

Best Way to Get to Donsol

It’s a long way going to Donsol because this is a remote town and there’s no airport in the vicinity. The best way to get here is to fly from Manila by plane or travel by bus to Legazpi City in Bicol. Then there are buses, jeepneys or hired vehicles that can take you to Donsol.

Once in Donsol, getting around is not a major hindrance. Tricycles are available everywhere. Although you may rent a car, there are certain parts of the town where the roads are too narrow and that can only accommodate a single lane for your vehicle.

The tourism office, which is your source of all information and materials, is far from the heart of the town, so it’s not advisable to walk. But when you are just in the town proper, everything is a walking distance.

Romancing with the Fireflies

It was a bright night as the moon shone brightly and the stars twinkled across the sky. The trees and nipa leaves were swaying with the breeze as if dancing for us. And there we were aboard a small boat, or banca, quietly drifting along the narrow river. Then, as we came deeper into the river, we saw some lights sparkling at trees. It was like the stars coming down at us.

The moon in Donsol

But they weren’t stars. It was like staring at a Christmas tree that sprouted at a river bank. It’s just that they were not Christmas lights, either. They were fireflies. Who would think that they all convene here when darkness comes?

We came a bit closer to the trees trying to get our cameras capture this natural beauty. Unfortunately, the fireflies seem evasive because they don’t register in our cameras. But there we were enthralled at such magnificent view, something cosmopolitan people see in the big cities.

Donsol

Butanding Festival

I don’t know if the festival is for the whale sharks or for the people. When I heard of this, I thought, this must be the time when the whale sharks come near the shore and be with people. I guess it must be because during the time we went to Donsol, there were so many Butandings in the vicinity.

But then again, festivals are best celebrated by people, with all the partying and the attractions. We couldn’t have come at such perfect timing as we did because at that time, the local town folks were celebrating the Butanding Festival. There were games and stalls put up at the town plaza all night long.

What’s more, music continually played till the wee hours of the morning. People were in the streets talking with each other and having fun. Some were just there to see what was happening or to watch who the visitors were. Well, we played some games that could be found in fairs and we enjoyed it even when we lost some coins along the way.

Snorkelling Donsol

Snorkeling in Donsol

Nothing could be more beautiful than watching a whale shark swim underwater in its natural habitat. The peace and quiet of the seas is soothing to the traveler, and keeping in touch with nature makes one feel intimate with our surroundings.

There we were floating on the surface of the sea watching other God’s creations live their life in their habitat. But it wasn’t that easy to just snorkel to watch the whale sharks. We had to ride a small pump boat and wait for the guide to direct us where he spots a whale shark. Then, the guide would shout “jump!” and immediately, we had to dive into the water or else pass the opportunity of seeing the giant beauties.

At first, we felt a bit apprehensive and nervous of this adventure but after a briefing at the tourism office, we were prepped up to get into action. The tourist office is well equipped and gives out lots of information about whale sharks and how to interact with them. Equipment is not a problem, as there is a lot that is rented out at a minimum fee. The people are friendly, especially the escorts in the whale shark-watching.

We were supposed to stay in the Woodlands but because it was full, we had to do a home stay in one of the houses in Donsol. But despite this, we opted to take our meals at Woodlands because it is near the Tourism office and the beach front.

100_7093

Woodlands has so many open spaces. Its restaurant is not that big but it has small picnic tables provided outside to accommodate more people. The food was terrific especially the grilled fishes and the grilled pork chop.

There are a few cottages which can accommodate families or large groups. There are several foreigners who came in groups or as a family who enjoy the experience of swimming of whale sharks.

While resorts have started in the surrounding (old Duana resort and new places like Vera Maris) where tourists and visitors can linger the night, the freshness of the place has been to some extent preserved.

9. Palogtoc Falls – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

It is an enjoyable, comfortable 20-minute walk down rolling hills covered with green grass, under a covering of tall coconut trees, as one walks off the Bulusan road down to the place. At the location, one perceives an artificial made of compressed earth swimming pool where the babbling water runs from just a few feet up the hillside.

It is literally just a mini-falls, but the fresh spring water is pleasant, energizing, and healthy. Accessible close to the side of the pool are picnic cottages.

Palogtoc Falls - Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Resident people majority of kids, leaping like playful pixies in the imaginary home atmosphere of Palogtoc Falls exhibit to me the actual pleasure of what the location can give apart from its natural charm.

10. Paguriran Island and Lagoon – Sorsogon Tourist Spots

Situated in Brgy. Sawangga in the urban area of Bacon, Paguriran Island, also familiar as Paguriran Beach, beckons backpackers who love beaches with their milky-sand seashore and crystal clear waters.

A tiny treasure of an isle is eased off in the hushed edges of Bacon, Sorsogon – the scenic Paguriran Island. Paguriran is a small collection of coral and a small island made of rock near the white sand coastlines of Sawanga in Bacon. It is reachable from the neighbouring beach by paddling along crystal clear waters, the deepness of which may span from ankle to waist depending on the tides. Enclosed on the island, coralline and granite sleep within a little depth lagoon that is absolute for swimming.

Paguriran Island and Lagoon - Sorsogon Tourist Spots

‘Paguriran Island’ is in reality not an island but is an assortment of rugged rocks formed like a volcano crater. This remarkable formation settles a lagoon nearby the sea wherein you can float around clear fresh waters. If you are courageous enough and have powerful walking shoes with you, climb your way up this small island and you’ll surely be honored with an astonishing atmospheric perspective of Paguriran and the nearshore of Bacon.

Coral prominence increases from the deep circle of the blue lagoon of Paguriran. The lagoon may be arrived at via a sand bar at low waters, but even at high waters, it may still be reached by walking if one is so decided, and travelling across the water up to the waist. The rocks, mainly protected in greenery that occasionally radiates a bright green colored tint to the differently cerulean blue of the lagoon, take as points from which the brave descent.

Geography of Donsol

Donsol is located in the southeastern part of the province of Sorsogon, Philippines. Situated on the island of Luzon, it is approximately 37 kilometers south of the busy capital city of Sorsogon. The town is blessed with a picturesque setting, surrounded by lush greenery and pristine waters.

The topography of Donsol is a combination of coastal plains, rivers, and mountains. The town is bordered by the Sorsogon Bay on the west, which serves as the main gateway for whale sharks entering the area. To the south lies the Ticao Pass, a strait that separates Luzon from the island of Ticao.

Donsol is also home to several rivers and estuaries, including the Donsol River and the Ogod River. These waterways serve as critical habitats for various aquatic species, contributing to the rich marine biodiversity of the area.

Surrounding the town are vast mangrove forests, which act as natural nurseries and feeding grounds for numerous marine creatures. These mangroves provide a habitat for a wide range of species, including birds, fish, crustaceans, and reptiles.

The climate in Donsol is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. The average temperature throughout the year ranges from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius (77 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit).

Due to its geographical location, Donsol experiences the nutrient-rich waters of the Sorsogon Bay and the Ticao Pass, which attract a multitude of marine life. This abundance of food sources makes Donsol an ideal destination for whale sharks, as well as for snorkeling, diving, and exploring the vibrant underwater world.

With its stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and proximity to the majestic whale sharks, Donsol offers a unique blend of adventure and natural wonders that will leave every visitor in awe of its beauty.

Overview of Whale Shark Interactions

Whale shark interactions in Donsol provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat. The town has gained global recognition as one of the premier destinations for responsible and sustainable whale shark tourism.

Whale sharks are filter-feeding sharks that migrate to the waters of Donsol to feed on the abundant plankton and small fish found in the area. During the peak season, the local ecosystem becomes a haven for these gentle giants, attracting them in large numbers.

The interactions with whale sharks in Donsol are carried out through snorkeling rather than diving, making it accessible to both experienced swimmers and beginners. The experience does not require scuba gear, reducing the impact on the marine environment and minimizing disturbance to the whale sharks.

Before heading out on the boat, visitors are given a briefing on the guidelines for whale shark interactions. These guidelines emphasize the importance of maintaining a respectful distance from the whale sharks, avoiding any physical contact, and refraining from using flash photography or excessive noise that could disturb the animals.

Once out on the water, spotters stationed on small boats search for whale sharks using their keen eyes and extensive knowledge of the area. When a whale shark is sighted, the boat approaches slowly and carefully to allow visitors to slip into the water and observe these majestic creatures from a safe distance.

Swimming alongside a whale shark is a truly awe-inspiring experience. As you float in the water, you will be amazed by their size and grace as they glide effortlessly through the ocean. The sight of their distinctive patterns and their enormous mouths filtering out plankton will leave you in awe of nature’s wonders.

Donsol’s commitment to responsible tourism ensures that the welfare of the whale sharks is prioritized. The number of boats allowed in the water at any given time is regulated to prevent overcrowding and minimize stress on the animals. This sustainable approach ensures that the whale sharks’ natural behavior and habitat are not disrupted.

Whale shark interactions in Donsol not only provide a thrilling adventure but also contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures. The fees collected from visitors support ongoing research, education, and conservation efforts to protect the whale sharks and their habitat.

By adhering to the guidelines and practicing responsible tourism, visitors to Donsol can play a crucial role in ensuring the long-term survival of these gentle giants, allowing future generations to continue experiencing the awe-inspiring beauty of whale sharks in their natural environment.

Guidelines for Whale Shark Interactions in Donsol

Interacting with whale sharks in Donsol is an incredible experience that comes with a responsibility to protect these magnificent creatures and their natural habitat. To ensure the well-being of the whale sharks and maintain sustainable tourism practices, strict guidelines have been implemented. Here are the key guidelines to follow during your whale shark interaction:

  • Maintain a Respectful Distance: Keep a minimum distance of 3 meters (10 feet) from the whale sharks. This distance is crucial to avoid any potential stress or disturbance to the animals.
  • No Touching: Resist the temptation to touch or grab the whale sharks. Respect their space and allow them to swim freely without any interference.
  • No Flash Photography: Avoid using flash photography as it can startle the whale sharks and impact their natural behavior. Utilize natural lighting to capture the beauty of these gentle giants.
  • No Feeding: Do not attempt to feed the whale sharks or introduce any foreign substances into the water. Let them feed naturally on the rich plankton resources in the area.
  • Silence is Golden: Maintain a peaceful and quiet environment during the interaction. Excessive noise can disrupt the whale sharks and may cause them to swim away.
  • Do Not Block the Path: Avoid blocking the path of the whale sharks or swimming directly in front of them. Allow them to pass by and observe from a safe distance.
  • Be Mindful of Fins and Tails: Be cautious of the whale sharks’ powerful fins and tails. Keep a safe distance to avoid accidental contact that may harm you or the animal.
  • Follow the Guide’s Instructions: Listen carefully to the instructions of your guide or boat crew. They are highly trained and experienced in ensuring both your safety and the well-being of the whale sharks.
  • Travel in Small Groups: To minimize the impact on the whale sharks and their environment, travel in small groups. Large crowds can disrupt the natural behavior of the animals and cause them stress.
  • Respect the Environment: Help preserve the natural beauty of the Donsol ecosystem by not littering or throwing any trash into the water. Leave only footprints, take only memories.

Adhering to these guidelines is crucial to protect the whale sharks and their habitat, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate these magnificent creatures. By practicing responsible and sustainable tourism, we can contribute to the conservation efforts and preserve the beauty of Donsol’s marine ecosystem.

Best Time to Visit Donsol for Whale Shark Interactions

The best time to visit Donsol for whale shark interactions is during the peak season, which typically runs from February to May. This period offers the highest probability of encountering these gentle giants in large numbers, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The whale sharks migrate to the waters of Donsol in search of plankton, which is more abundant during these months. As the plankton blooms, it creates a feeding frenzy for the whale sharks, attracting them in great numbers to the area. This concentration of whale sharks increases the chances of sightings during your visit.

However, it is important to note that whale shark encounters are possible throughout the season, which extends from November to June. Even outside of the peak months, you still have a good chance of swimming alongside these magnificent creatures.

During November to January, the whale sharks may be fewer in number, but this period offers a quieter and more serene atmosphere. The waters are less crowded, allowing for a more intimate experience with the whale sharks and a greater opportunity for uninterrupted observation.

As with any marine wildlife, sightings are subject to natural fluctuations and cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as weather conditions, water temperature, and plankton abundance can impact the presence and behavior of the whale sharks. However, the chances of sightings are generally higher during the peak season.

To increase your chances of encountering whale sharks, it is recommended to schedule multiple days for your visit. This allows for flexibility in case weather conditions or other factors affect visibility or the presence of the whale sharks on a particular day.

It is also advisable to check with local tour operators or visitor centers for up-to-date information on whale shark sightings and conditions prior to your trip. They can provide insights on recent sightings and help you plan the best time to visit based on the current circumstances.

Regardless of the specific time you choose to visit Donsol, witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.
