15 Best Things To Do in Peoria (AZ)

Located within the picturesque landscape of the Salt River Valley, Peoria, Arizona, proudly stands as a major suburb of Phoenix. With a population of approximately 154,000 as of 2010, this vibrant town seamlessly blends the beauty of the sloping desert terrain with the majesty of the surrounding mountain foothills.

Peoria’s journey has been one of resilience and revival, marked by significant events that shaped its history. In 1917, disaster struck when a fire engulfed the local pool hall, causing extensive damage that nearly decimated the town’s business district. It seemed as if Peoria’s future hung in the balance.

Yet, from the ashes of destruction emerged a renewed spirit of determination. The town embraced the opportunity for growth, embarking on a journey of rebuilding. Sturdy and attractive constructions replaced the charred remnants, breathing new life into the community. With the combined efforts of eager entrepreneurs and the emergence of new enterprises during World War I, Peoria experienced a renaissance that propelled it back onto the path of prosperity.

Now, to help you with your visit, let’s delve into the wonders and delights that await within the vibrant streets of Peoria. Here is my list of the best things to do in Peoria.

1. Family Fun at Rio Vista Recreation Center

Fitness

When it comes to a bustling hub of activities and entertainment, look no further than the Rio Vista Community Park. This lively destination offers something for everyone, ensuring that nobody is left without excitement or amusement. As I stepped onto its grounds, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the array of facilities and attractions that awaited me.

For those seeking active pursuits, the park boasts indoor racquetball courts that are perfect for an invigorating game. As a fitness enthusiast, I was thrilled to discover a well-equipped gym, complete with an impressive assortment of weight machines of varying loads. It was a haven for those looking to break a sweat and stay in shape.

However, it wasn’t just the sporting amenities that caught my attention. The park’s dedication to family-friendly experiences was evident in the inclusion of water sprinkler swings and monkey bars, sure to delight the younger members of any group. Watching the little ones swing and play, their laughter filling the air, brought a smile to my face.

One aspect that stood out to me was the impeccable cleanliness and maintenance of the center. It was evident that the staff took great pride in their work, ensuring that every corner was pristine and welcoming. Their attentiveness and willingness to assist with any inquiries or concerns further enhanced the overall experience.

Whether you’re seeking a thrilling game of racquetball, a rewarding workout session, or simply a place for your little monkeys to enjoy themselves, the Rio Vista Community Park offers it all. Its diverse offerings and diligent staff create an environment that leaves visitors with lasting memories and a desire to return time and time again.

2. Let’s (watch them) play ball at Peoria Sports Complex!

Peoria Sports Complex

As a sports fanatic, one of the highlights of my time in Peoria was visiting the renowned Peoria Sports Complex during the thrilling spring training season. This exceptional stadium serves as the home turf for two esteemed teams: the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres, both partaking in the highly anticipated Cactus League.

I couldn’t help but admire the well-designed layout of the complex. Comprised of the main baseball stadium, known as Peoria Stadium, along with an impressive collection of 12 practice fields, this facility caters to the needs of both players and fans alike. What struck me most was the stadium’s relatively intimate size, allowing spectators to be in close proximity to the exhilarating play action on the field.

Finding a cozy spot on the grass seating, I marveled at the perfect setting for families to relax and immerse themselves in the joyous atmosphere. Parents comfortably sat, basking in the sun, while their children ran and played around them. Witnessing the pure happiness and energy radiating from the young ones filled me with a sense of warmth and delight.

In addition to the captivating on-field action, the Peoria Sports Complex goes above and beyond to ensure that every moment is filled with excitement. Between innings, the complex hosts entertaining activities that engage fans of all ages. Whether it’s a captivating mascot performance, a lively sing-along, or an engaging contest, there was never a dull moment throughout the entire game.

Safety and well-being should always be a priority, ensuring that we can fully enjoy the trail without any concerns.

With abundant outdoor recreation and attractions, such as Lake Pleasant, it's easy to see why Peoria is a favorite of visitors and residents alike.

The New River Trail runs through town and offers multi-use paths for running, walking, horseback riding and cycling near the water's edge, while sprawling Lake Pleasant offers more water recreation with houseboats, kayaks and canoes available for rent. If you're more comfortable on the green than on the water, check out Peoria's five golf courses. And in spring, a pair of sports teams gather here: The Peoria Sports Complex is the Spring Training home for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.

Where old meets new

From locally sourced coffee and wood-fired pizza to sprawling parks and public art, there's something for everyone in Old Town Peoria . Take a tour of historic Peoria in the town square, where buildings like the Peoria Central School and the Peoria Presbyterian Church date back as far as 1899. Stroll through the city's oldest public park, Osuna Park, and enjoy the beauty of its tile mosaics, bronze sculptures and architectural steel trellises. Round out your day in Peoria with a show at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts , a 250-seat theater that opened in 2006 and features a catalog of live stage performances and musical productions.

Discover a true desert oasis at the aptly named Lake Pleasant Regional Park . Surrounded by the Sonoran Desert, Lake Pleasant is an outdoor enthusiast's dream destination for both adventure and relaxation. With more than 23,000 acres of water and an unblemished desert landscape, the park offers a variety of ways to soak up the region's beauty, from kayaking and scuba diving to hiking and stargazing.

Home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners, Peoria Sports Complex welcomes thousands of fans every spring for America's favorite pastime. While baseball is the main draw, local food and craft beer add to the appeal, and younger fans can stay cool in Peoria Cove, a shipwreck-themed playground and water play area.

Designed by master golf course architect Rees Jones, Peoria's Quintero Golf Club is consistently recognized as one of the country's best public courses. Artistically carved out of a pristine piece of lush Arizona desert, this Peoria golf course is described as the "purest golf experience" in the Southwest, testing players at every level of expertise in the game.

'Midwestern charm': Why Peoria has been ranked among 100 best places to live in U.S.

tourist attractions in peoria az

Peoria has been ranked among the top places to live in the U.S., according to a publisher of community guides for small-to-mid-sized cities and towns.

Livability.com named Peoria among their 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S., giving it a Livability Score of 706, similar to places like Richmond, Virginia, and Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Livability Score is calculated through an algorithm that examines a city's economy, cost of living, amenities, transportation, environment, safety, education and health, then distills it down into the final figure.

Peoria was ranked highly by Livability for a relatively low cost of living compared to other cities, amenities such as the Peoria Riverfront Museum , the Peoria Civic Center and the Peoria Zoo , and ease of transportation.

Another Chicago suburb – Evanston – got a score of 770, with Bloomington clocking in at 768 and Champaign receiving a figure of 702.

Livability ranked Carmel, Indiana, as the nation's most livable city, with the Indianapolis suburb receiving a score of 875 and earning praise for a thriving arts scene, ample outdoor activities and strong quality of life.
