And once you are done conquering the mountain peaks, the town offers plenty of opportunities to relax those tired muscles, with quiet rides on brightly painted boats on the placid Lake Phewa and easy walks to see soul-stirring sunrises just some of the things that will make you fall in love with Pokhara.

Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital, is an exciting mix of cultural and nature-based activities. Explore the city’s many UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Pashupatinath Temple, the Boudanath Stupa, and Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha - to name a few. And to get an adrenaline rush, you could always go white water rafting or bungee jump, head first, into the 160 deep Bhote Kosi River gorge.

The 124 miles (200 km) distance from Pokhara to Kathmandu can be covered by air or road. Multiple departures throughout the day and a quick 30 minute travel time make flights a very convenient option, while buses are very popular due to their economical pricing.

Travelers also have the option of booking a private minivan or taxi that gives a lot more flexibility in picking departure times and in the journey itself. And with hotel pick up and drop off, they take out the hassle of heading to and from the bus stop and airport.

Taking a bus

There are around ten bus departures every day, and with ticket prices starting from $8 per passenger, they are a cost-effective way to travel from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Travel times range from 7 to 8 hours. All bus operators leave from Pokhara at around 06.00 or 07.00 in the morning, which means that you will reach Kathmandu by late afternoon or early evening. All the buses have air conditioning and cushioned seats (some are fitted with comfortable, reclining seats) and make multiple stops for passengers to grab a quick bite and freshen up.

Taking a private minivan

With a five and a half hour travel time, taking a private minivan is a faster option and a good choice if you are visiting the country as part of a bigger group. It accommodates up to 9 passengers and provides a reasonable amount of legroom. Minivans offer hotel or airport pick up and drop off and allow you to choose a departure time providing you with a lot of convenience. Of course, it also allows you the flexibility of stopping over whenever you or your group wants - for food breaks and restroom stops.

Hiring a private car/taxi

Travelers also have the choice of hiring a private car or taxi to get to Kathmandu. With hotel and airport pick up and drop off, and flexibility in terms of departure time, private taxis are an excellent option for those who value convenience and don’t want the hassle of multiple transfers. It’s an ideal choice for families too! If you are traveling as part of a small group, you can book a standard sized car that is good for up to 3 passengers. For those who want some extra space and legroom too, you can book a more spacious SUV.

Taking a flight

Travelers who prefer a shorter travel time and want to maximize their sightseeing can choose from the many flight options available. There are morning and afternoon departure times available, making it easy to select one that is most convenient for you. Do note that travelers are required to check-in at least 1 hour before the scheduled departure time.

What to see when traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu?

If you are traveling by bus, taxi or minivan from Pokhara to Kathmandu, you will pass by small towns and villages and see quaint countryside scenes with locals going about their daily lives and children heading to school. Your road journey will, for a significant part of the time, trace the path of Trishuli River , popular for white water rafting expeditions.

Those traveling by private van or taxi and starting their trip early can stop midway to take the cable car up to Manakamana Temple for unforgettable views of the surroundings.

Those traveling by air are in for a visual treat. The trip, though short, provides you with sweeping views of the Himalayas. So, sit back and enjoy the sights!

How to get the Tourist Bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara (and the honest truth about it).

  • By Sarah Steiner
  • Updated On March 23, 2024

Kathmandu is the central hub of tourism in Nepal.  But for trekking in the Annapurna Region, you need to get yourself to Pokhara.  There is a daily domestic flight.  Or you can take the Tourist Bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

This is what we did and here is everything you need to know (and wanted to ask) about it.  It doesn’t have the greatest reputation. And it seems suspiciously like hotels and agents in Kathmandu lie to you about the time it takes for the journey…

Here is our honest report about it. (And without too much of a spoiler this early on in the story I can tell you that we even did it more than once). It isn’t as bad as you might have heard. So here’s everything we wanted to know about the Tourist Bus to get ready for the ride.

Options for travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara

There are two options for travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara:

  • By air:  a 25 minute flight
  • By road:  the ‘Tourist Bus’

Or if you have the funds you can book a private flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

We found the easiest (or at least the most economical / cheapest) way to travel by road was the Kathmandu to Pokhara Tourist Bus service.

Travel by bus in Nepal. Book MnS bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara Tourist Bus or sofa seat bus.

How long does the journey take by road from Kathmandu to Pokhara?

Ah ha. This is definitely the infamous questions about travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

A quick search on Google Maps will tell you 7 hours.

And your guesthouse or hotel (or anyone you ask in Thamel) will tell you 6 – 7 hours.

WRONG.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the journey to Pokhara by road is LONG.  The roads in Nepal are notoriously  shit bad.  There is no need to sugarcoat that.

The bus takes the best part of a day.  But don’t stop reading yet!  The journey does have pros going for it.  It’s cheaper and more relaxing than a flight.  And it kind of eases you into rural Nepal with glimpses from the comfort (the seats  are comfortable) of your reclining seat.

At best I would say that including 4x stops (for breakfast, lunch and toilet breaks) you’re in for an 8-hour journey.  On average, expect a travel time of at least 8 – 10 hours.

I’ll tell you a bit more about it and why despite the timeframe we still recommend taking the Tourist Bus Kathmandu to Pokhara.

Where does the bus depart from in Kathmandu?

It’s more like a road lined with buses than an actual central bus terminal in Kathmandu.  But the Bus Station you need to get to for the Tourist Bus to Pokhara is located  at Nayabazar.  It is only about 900 metres from Thamel in Kathmandu.  We put our packs on and walked from our hotel to the bus terminal.  It takes about 12 – 15 minutes on foot to reach.

Check with your hotel which bus company you are booked with and confirm the departure location is correct.

Ready to depart by bus from the bus terminal in Kathmandu. We are getting the tourist bus to Pokhara.

Are there different bus companies? Which one do you recommend?

We didn’t specifically choose our bus company.  Our hotel in Kathmandu booked our bus tickets and we ended up on a bus sign written with ‘MNS’.  If I was to compare the bus based on the suspension (truly) with the SWIFT Tourist Bus, we got return; I’d rate MNS’s suspension as more comfortable.

There are many different Tourist Bus companies to choose from.

AC Tourist Bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

What time does the tourist bus to Pokhara depart Kathmandu?

Kathmandu to Pokhara Tourist Bus leaves at  7AM  in the morning every day.

What time do you need to be at the tourist bus terminal in Kathmandu?

It is recommended to arrive 30 minutes before departure.  There isn’t much to do but you can make sure you find your bus (there are a lot of different bus companies) and load your bags underneath.

About the Tourist Bus ‘terminal’ in Kathmandu

It really isn’t a bus terminal (not as we know it).  More like a street with all of the different Tourist Buses lined up ready for departure.

There are kiosks and small cafes where you can buy breakfast or a coffee.  And plenty of small stands and convenience stores if you need snacks for the journey.  There are public toilets just a few steps up the hill.  It is well signposted.

About the journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara by bus

The drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara by bus  IS   BUMPY .  The roads are very uneven.  And in what must be a majority of the time; the roads aren’t even sealed.  There are stops for road works.  And vehicles that overtake in strange places.  But the reason it takes so long is because the bus barely gets above 30 km/ph.

I’m not going to lie.  We were worried about getting sick.  Motion sickness, I mean.  And we worried especially about whether the kids would be sick on the bus.

But it’s not like that.  Albeit you may need to prepare in advance with a high-tech sports bra.  (Trust me; brace yourself for bumpy).  But due to how bad the roads are the bus travels very slowly and it wasn’t the kind of speed or turns and curves that made any of us feel sick.

Perhaps the state of the roads in a blessing in disguise?

Traveling by bus in Nepal is an adventure. How to book a ticket for the tourist bus to Pokhara.

Does the bus stop between Kathmandu and Pokhara?

Yes.  The bus stops 3 – 4 times during the journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara.  (It stopped four times on the way back).

The first stop is only about 1 hour after departure and is a quick stop for the toilet.  There are small kiosks and a basic café you can grab a drink.  But at this stop the bus only stops for 5 minutes.

The second stop is around 10:00 – 10:30am.  The attendant will call out to let you know how long you are stopping here for.  (In our case, the ‘breakfast’ stop was for 20 minutes).  There is a buffet option here for 500 NPR with fried rice and vegetables.

The third stop is officially for lunch.  The break here is for 30 minutes.

There are toilets available at each stop.

How much does it cost?

Current (2023) tickets for the Tourist Bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara (and Pokhara to Kathmandu) cost between $9 – $20 USD.  There are two options for ticket pricing.

  • Standard Tourist Bus:  1000 – 1200 NPR ($8 – $9 USD)
  • Sofa-Seat Tourist Bus:  1600 – 2600 NPR ($12 – $20 USD)

We did the journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara on the Standard Tourist Bus.  Our tickets cost 1200 NPR each.

And for the return journey we booked through a third-party agency and paid $20 USD for the *Sofa-Seat Tourist Bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu. (Actually, this is expensive).

*When I asked at Pokhara Bus Terminal directly to the Sofa-Seat bus company (Swift) they sell tickets from Pokhara to Kathmandu for 1600 NPR.

How to buy a ticket for the Tourist Bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara

You can buy tickets for the Tourist Bus from your hotel.  Literally every guesthouse and hotel in Kathmandu has a sign or board up advertising bus tickets.  They will book the bus and give you a paper ticket with your allocated seat and departure time.  You can pay them directly.

Otherwise in Kathmandu (especially Thamel) there are literally hundreds of travel agencies and booking agencies lining the streets.  Each of them has a standardized price and can book the bus for you and give you a paper ticket.

  • Tip:  It was convenient booking through our hotel in Kathmandu and the manager even booked us four tickets on the right-hand side of the bus.  We didn’t know but on the way from Kathmandu to Pokhara this means you are on the river side of the bus and have views the entire way.

Arriving in Pokhara

Arriving at the bus terminal in Pokhara (yes it has a bus terminal) felt exciting.  You can see peaks of the Annapurna Range in the distance.  And it really does feel like both an accomplishment (you made it by bus) and an exciting new start (get ready for your trekking adventures).

There are plenty of taxi drivers waiting at the bus terminal in Pokhara.  You won’t need to worry about finding a driver.  It is only a few kilometres to the Pokhara lakeside where all the hotels and guesthouses are centered.  And a taxi ride should cost you no more than 500 NPR.

Do we recommend the Tourist Bus to Pokhara? And would we do it again?

Yes! And we did.  We also took the Tourist Bus back from Pokhara to Kathmandu.  It is a long journey (don’t expect a few hours of highway travel).  And it is bumpy and slow.  But if you aren’t in a rush and want to stretch your budget in Nepal then we can recommend the journey.  And it could even be an option to bus one way and fly the other.  Pokhara does also has an international airport.

So, happy travels and sit back and make the most of Nepal’s luxury buses!

Let’s tackle all things about Pokhara paragliding here. We’ll cover what paragliding is, how to book, what to wear, and more.

What is Paragliding?

Paragliding is an extreme aerial sport characterized by running off of cliffs or slopes with free parachutes attached to you. When the wind is right, you can catch the breeze and actually float and steer yourself around the sky.

Paragliding is relatively more accessible than skydiving since it does not require an airplane. It was founded in the 1980s, so it is a relatively young sport.

Tandem paragliding is when two riders fly on the same paragliding equipment, using the same parachute. Typically, a tandem group will include a knowledgeable guide and a lesser-experienced flyer – or even a first timer.

Where to go Paragliding in Nepal

The absolute best area for paragliding in Nepal is the Pokhara valley, a beautiful lakeside town in Central Nepal.

Pokhara is located at the foot of the Annapurna mountain range, meaning that you will have some sweeping views as you glide through the air. This mountain range is home to three of the world’s 8000-metre peaks, so no matter where you fly, you will have a panoramic view.

Pokhara is the best place for paragliding because it has a consistently reliable climate for the sport. The geography of Pokhara and the climate in Nepal ‘s central region provide great conditions.

Pokhara is renowned in the paragliding world, known for hosting an annual professional competition in the sport. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced pilot, you can find various paragliding options in the Pokhara Valley, including advanced courses and tandem flights.

How to Get to Pokhara, Nepal

So, how can you get to Pokhara for paragliding?

Most travelers will initially land in Kathmandu first thing. After exploring all of the best things to do in Kathmandu , you’ll need to travel to Nepal’s Pokhara Valley.

Luckily, you have several options on how to get there, and with various budgets in mind. The top options on how to get to Pokhara are by plane, by car, or by bus. More on each below.

Pro Tip: If you would like to go paragliding in Pokhara as part of a tour rather than planning the details yourself, you can swipe my entire Nepal itinerary here ! This tour stops at every single place I cover on this blog, and I cannot recommend this route more. I had an unbeatable time. BOOK YOUR 10 DAY NEPAL ADVENTURE TOUR HERE!

Travel to Pokhara by plane

The quickest way to get to Pokhara from Kathmandu is via an airplane.

Pokhara has a small regional airport that services Kathmandu and other airports across Nepal. The most common airlines to fly the KTM-PKR route include Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Simrik Air.

No matter who you book, the flight takes approximately 30 minutes and can typically be booked online even at the last minute. However, know that last minute flights may cost more.

Travel to Pokhara by car

You can also travel to Pokhara independently by car. You should know though that many roads in Nepal are not paved and are rather bumpy and dusty. Additionally, driving in Kathmandu is crazy.

Therefore, it is best for tourists to hire a private driver to take them from Kathmandu to Pokhara . The drive will be roughly five to seven hours in total, depending on the time of day and the current road conditions. But, you’ll have much more comfortable seats than on a bus and less hassle than travel by air.

Travel to Pokhara by bus

The third option is to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara by using the buses in Nepal .

Nepal has a pretty extensive bus system that can reliably get you from point a to point b. Let me warn you in advance, the tourist buses are not typically in great condition. However, they will get you where you need to go.

Best time to go Paragliding in Pokhara

Next we need to talk about the best time to go paragliding in Pokhara, Nepal.

Since paragliding is a weather-dependent sport, you will not be able to fly if conditions aren’t safe. For example, it’s not safe to paraglide when there are storms, strong winds, lightning, or rain.

Let’s break down the best time for paragliding in Pokhara in terms of both months and times of day.

The best months for paragliding in Pokhara, Nepal

I previously mentioned that Pokhara is the best location for paragliding in Nepal due to the consistently ideal conditions.

This is true for most months out of the year, with the exception of July and August. These months bring on Nepal’s monsoon season and conditions will sometimes be too rainy, windy, and stormy.

Some days in July and August will be okay, and others will not, but there is no way to predict which in advance. Paragliding during these months is a gamble.

The paragliding season in Nepal begins in September and lasts until early June, generally. I went during the month of May and it was picture perfect. Additionally, November and December are known to be great times for paragliding in Pokhara.

Pro Tip: The busiest months for paragliding in Pokhara are September through December and February through May.

The best time of day for paragliding in Pokhara, Nepal

Typically, paragliding flights will depart several times per day, at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. This is true of paragliding in Pokhara’s Sarangkot region.

I took the 12pm paragliding slot, and for the most part that worked well. If I were to do it again, I would choose the exact same slot. Here is why.

The sun needs to be out long enough to heat the earth and create the thermals necessary for liftoff from the cliff. In the early morning, the thermals haven’t yet developed.

By late morning, though, the thermals will be “ready” for flight. Think of it this way – from late morning onward, you will be in the air longer. Early morning would be a much shorter flight.

However, if you want a more short and smooth flight, an earlier session would be ideal. More often than not, this will be a smoother timeframe, although that can’t be fully guaranteed.

One thing to note.

Once you arrive to the hillside, you will likely have to wait around a bit. The pilot has to take care of several things, like laying out the parachute, giving you a safety recap, and waiting for a clear run. You don’t have much to do but put your gear on and stand around watching.

Pro Tip: The midday slots can get quite hot and you will be standing in direct sunlight. Be sure to carry sunglasses , sunscreen , and a lightweight long sleeve jacket . More on what to pack below.

How Safe is Paragliding in Pokhara?

It is completely normal to wonder about safety when planning to paraglide in Pokhara, Nepal! You are embarking on an extreme sport, after all.

So, how safe is paragliding in Pokhara?

It is generally safe, but it is not 100% safe. No extreme sport is, and yes, there have been accidents in Pokhara and beyond.

While I was there, the only “accidents” I saw were people who didn’t run correctly or listen to their pilot on when to lift their legs. I saw several knee and shin-drags across the grass, which can hinder take-off.

However, I did not witness any serious accidents, and during my time in Pokhara I witnessed a lot of flights and take-offs.

Pro Tip: When planning for any extreme sports while traveling, you absolutely need to consider getting travel insurance . While you will hopefully not need it, having it will give you peace of mind in case of any mishap. GET A TRAVEL INSURANCE QUOTE HERE.

Regarding the accidents I touched on above, it is worth noting that these are typically solo pilots and not tandem groups. Solo pilots are trainees who are collecting flight hours in order to become a tandem-flight pilot.

Tandem pilots have to undergo a rigorous training to get their paragliding license. This means that your pilot will have experienced flying solo for more than a thousand hours over a period of 18 months, as well as rigorous health check-ups and first-aid training.

Rest assured, your tandem pilot is well-versed in the sport!

Furthermore, the Nepal Airsports Association has implemented several rules to make paragliding safer:

  • Paragliding pilots may only fly one shift per day.
  • Solo pilots and tandem flyers will depart from separate hillsides. Before, all pilots would all fly from the same spot in Sarangkot. Now solo pilots take off from another area, meaning that Sarangkot is much less crowded overall.
  • Each company is allotted a certain timeframe to avoid overcrowding.

Since the implementation of these rules, there have reportedly been no new accidents.

Pro Tip: World Nomads travel insurance has packages that cover a wide range of adventure activities including paragliding. GET A QUOTE HERE!

Do You Need Experience To Go Paragliding in Nepal?

No, you do not need experience to go paragliding in Nepal. However, all first-timers and inexperienced riders will need to fly tandem with a well-trained pilot. Solo flying is not allowed without a paragliding license.

How Much Does Paragliding in Nepal Cost?

Like most activities and tours in Nepal , there is always a wide range of prices depending on the company and specific services. Here is a general guideline on what to expect as far as pricing.

Tandem Paragliding

Tandem flights typically cost between NPR 10,000 (USD 75) to NPR 16,000 (USD 120) for a 30-minute flight. The variation can be due to whether or not transportation, photos, or video is included.

BOOK YOUR TANDEM PARAGLIDING TRIP HERE!

In my experience, paragliding bookings generally included transportation to and from your hotel, but oftentimes photography and videography services were an additional charge – roughly NPR 2,000 (USD 15) or so.

Solo Paragliding

Remember, solo paragliding is only available for licensed paragliding pilots.

If you are qualified, you’ll need to obtain clearance from Pokhara’s aviation office independently. Solo flights will cost a minimum of NPR 8,000 (USD 70) but in reality will likely have extra fees.

Paragliding Course

For anyone interested in becoming a licensed paragliding pilot, you actually can do that in Pokhara!

Several paragliding schools can be found in Pokhara. Courses typically consist of three different sections and skill levels that build on each other: beginner, progression, and thermaling.

Each course takes about 5 days to complete, meaning that it will take 15 days to do the full course. Budget a minimum of NPR 230,000 (USD 2,000) for the course and expect an international license upon completion. More info here .

How to Book a Paragliding Flight in Nepal

Your Pokhara paragliding adventure starts here!

I recommend that all travelers book their paragliding adventure in advance. This is because it can sell out during the busiest days and busiest months.

So if this is a non-negotiable Pokhara experience, book in advance.

You basically have two options if you want to pre-book. You can either book your Pokhara paragliding trip as part of a larger tour throughout Nepal, or as a short day trip from the Pokhara Valley.

These are the top tours to book for paragliding.

1. A Tandem Paragliding Day Trip from Pokhara

If you are already going to be in Pokhara and are just looking for a day trip, I highly recommend this Pokhara paragliding day tour .

Not only will you view spectacular mountains and tiny villages below you, but you are also flying with some of the most experienced pilots.

This tour includes transportation to and from your hotel, too. They operate between 9am-2pm, but remember – don’t take the earliest slot unless you want a shorter ride!

What to Wear for Paragliding in Nepal

Believe it or not, I actually have a fairly specific list of what I would recommend to wear for paragliding in Nepal. Most of it you will find on my Nepal packing list for women .

The last thing you need is for your clothes to hold you back! Here is what to wear.

Thick Leggings

I highly recommend form fitting thick comfy leggings , for paragliding as opposed to loose or baggy pants. They make it much easier to run before takeoff during paragliding and ensure that loose fabric is not getting caught on any gear or equipment connected to you. Don’t skip them. Get yours here!

Lightweight Tanks

A lightweight tank is the perfect choice for hot weather months. Just remember to pair it with the super light long sleeve layer below. Pack any that you have on hand, or if you are looking for an update then Get yours here!

Basic T-Shirts

And, of course basic tees are excellent for covering your shoulders on sunnier days. Definitely pack a couple for Nepal. Get yours here!

33,000ft Packable Rain Jacket

This lightweight packable rain jacket is great for chilly mornings in the sky. It can also cover your shoulders from the sun as you float underneath it. Bonus, it folds up into a tiny softball sized pouch for easy stashing, too! Get yours here!

I forgot to grab my sunglasses from my hotel and boy did I regret it! The sun can shine strong in Nepal, especially in spring and summer. When you’re in the sky it is even more intense. I love these ones in particular lately. Get yours here !

Rugged Trekking Sandals

I wore these Keen trekking sandals when I went paragliding in Pokhara, Nepal. They let my feet breathe but have a tight fit so I know they never fall off. They came with me to Nepal just as they have across countless other countries. Get yours here!

KEEN Women’s Mid Waterproof Boots

Alternately, these mid-height KEEN Waterproof Boots are another excellent choice if you prefer tennis shoes. They are great if you need to pack for trekking in Nepal, too. Get your boots here!

What to Expect When Paragliding in Pokhara, Nepal

Your day will start with a hotel pickup, in most cases. And, your transportation will be with a small group of strangers, picked up from around the city, unless you have a large group.

I spent part of my time solo traveling in Nepal and part with one other person, and we boarded a shuttle with just a few other people going for paragliding. Note that there were other companies out there as well, so we did not have the mountain to ourselves my any means.

After a drive to your paragliding spot (mine took roughly one hour) you will get out, leaving all loose items behind. Backpacks, sunscreens, cameras, and purses need to be left in the vehicle. They do not let you fly with loose items, in case of dropping them from the sky!

Next, you will climb a hill where others will probably already be setting up if not flying. At my noontime slot, the hill was flooded with colorful parachutes ranging from bright golds or reds to multi-colored rainbows.

This is where you will get your first glimpse of Pokhara paragliding, watching as pilots and riders run to the edge and take off!

Listen closely to your instructor as they direct you on how to take off, what you do in the air, and how to land. Taking off is the “hardest” part. In the sky, you simply sit, and when you land it is much easier than you would think.

When it was my turn, I’m happy to say that I ran and lifted-off perfectly, thanks to my pilot’s explanation. We ran to the edge and the lifted off, somehow soaring up high into the sky!

It was almost like magic.

It’s difficult to understand how the pilots not only glide downward to land at the valley below, but how they actually gain height and maintain height for 20-30 minutes of flying. The pilot maneuvers the chute via two plastic handles attached to the parachute.

There you are, twisting and turning and circling in the air, the houses and people so incredibly tiny down below! It’s quite incredible how high you fly.

The time goes quickly. Once it’s time to descend, the pilot will begin lowering down to the landing point. And, as mentioned, your job is easy. The pilot touches down first and your feet will hit ground more solid than you’d guess.

And then, it is over. But it will probably leave you wanting to paraglide in Pokhara or beyond again!

Where to Stay in Pokhara, Nepal

Even if you only come to Pokhara for paragliding, you are going to want to spend at least one night here before or after your flight.

I stayed multiple days here personally, as I was also planning to go bungee jumping in Nepal and take part in other Pokhara adventure activities . Also note that are quite a few things to do around Pokhara , too.

Luckily, Pokhara has accommodation prices for every budget. Here are my top three recommendations for lodging, from budget to mid-range to luxury.

Budget travelers will be amazed at how affordable Pokhara can be! The New Tourist Guest House is a budget, no frills option that still offers clean and basic rooms.

The best part – you can get a private room for the price of a dorm bed elsewhere! And, the location is top notch, within walking distance of Phewa Lake and many of the shops and restaurants in Pokhara.

The New Tourist Guest House also has free wifi, parking, and an on site restaurant.

BOOK THE NEW TOURIST GUEST HOUSE NOW!

2. Mid-range

The Silver Oaks Inn is a cute hotel tucked behind greenery. It offers all the necessities and adds just a little bit of frill.

Known for its excellent location, just one mile from the bus stand and two miles from the Pokhara Airport, you can get around easy from here.

You’ll get a tour desk, business center, and outdoor seating area to boot. If affordable comfort is your thing, check out Silver Oaks Inn .

BOOK SILVER OAKS INN NOW!

Nepal is a very affordable country overall, and that means that you can get luxury accommodations for a still-reasonable price! Much cheaper than in the USA, at least.

My luxury recommendation for Pokhara is the gorgeous The Pavilions Himalayas retreat. Here you will have a beautiful, tranquil setting, surrounded by nature. An infinity pool greets you on the sun deck outside.

The clean modern rooms are pure luxury. Enjoy breakfast, a fitness room, and optional yoga classes on site. The Pavilions Himalayas  can’t be beat.

Can you take photos during the flight?

While all of the paragliding companies that I talked to don’t allow you to bring your own cameras, they do however offer a photo and video option as you fly.

The pilot can carry a GoPro on a selfie stick which is used to get photo and video of you and the pilot soaring about. My pilot also let me shoot some of them, which I would imagine is pretty standard.

The photo add-ons are cheap enough that you should do it, particularly if it is your first time paragliding. The pictures make for some good memories!

What is the paragliding in Pokhara price to expect?

Paragliding in Pokhara will generally cost between 10,000 – 16,000 NPR or $75 – $120 USD. The price can vary though depending on your package inclusions, like transportation and photography.

While no extreme sport can ever be guaranteed as 100% safe, paragliding in Nepal has a great track record of very few accidents. Each pilot undergoes 1000 hours of flight training and solo paragliding before receiving a license or being allowed to take a passenger.

How scary is paragliding?

My personal opinion is, paragliding was not exceptionally scary. You might get chills when you imagine the wind catching the parachute wrong or daydream about how far away the ground is. Yikes. But try to enjoy the freeing feeling as you glide through the air rather than letting your fears take over.

Ride-hailing startups on expansion spree. But lack of rules hinders competition

Ride-hailing startups on expansion spree. But lack of rules hinders competition

Krishana Prasain

While Pathao, an app-based ride-hailing and food delivery company, has been expanding aggressively, other such companies remain stuck as they wait for guidelines to expand in and out of Kathmandu Valley.

Pathao has started its service in 18 cities across the country starting from the Nepali New Year on April 13, after six years of service in Kathmandu Valley. It launched its service in Chitwan in September 2022.

The company said demand for a convenient and cost-effective transportation service outside the Kathmandu Valley has been increasing lately.

“We have now reached all seven provinces,” said Suraksha Hamal, head of marketing of Pathao Nepal. “Within a week of announcing our expansion, we have received applications from 5,000 riders. There are more than 1,000 rides daily outside Kathmandu and Chitwan. Both riders and customers are growing,” she said.

Customers in the newly expanded markets can bid on the approximate fare displayed on the app when using the ride service, Hamal said.

Pathao was founded in 2015 in the US and officially started on September 24, 2018, in Kathmandu.

Pathao ride-hailing service has been expanded to nine cities of Koshi province including Biratnagar, Damak, Urlabari, Biratchowk, Itahari, Inaruwa, Dharan, Birtamod and Bhadrapur. In Madhesh province ride-hailing service of Pathao is available in Birgunj and Janakpur.

Similarly, Pathao ride-hailing service has started in Pokhara of Gandaki province; Butwal, Nepalgunj and Bhairahawa of Lumbini province, and Birendranagar of Sudurpaschim province.

The company plans to further expand its service in other cities of the country shortly.

Tootle, a once popular ride-hailing platform, resumed its services on September 1 last year, but it is now focussed on goods deliveries. Officials at the company said they have no immediate plans to expand service outside the Kathmandu Valley.

Tootle, the Nepali tech startup, began operations in January 2017.

Initially, a team comprising Aayush Subedi, Princi Koirala, Bina Laxmi Shrestha, Sixit Bhatta and a few others had designed an app to track Sajha buses. It soon became popular. However, due to the lack of marketing and transparency, its public faith started to erode. Then Pathao emerged as the dominant player in the market.

Zapp Services Pvt Ltd currently operates Tootle. The company refused to comment on its plan.

When Pathao enjoyed a market monopoly after the fall of Tootle, the United States-based inDrive launched its service in Nepal in April 2022.

Currently, inDrive’s ride-hailing service is available in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan.

The company said it too has no immediate plans to expand to other cities. According to industry insiders, inDrive is waiting for government guidelines to ensure its legality.

“We don’t have an immediate market expansion plan in Nepal. We want to focus on the cities we are currently present in. We want to grow our business there,” Pavit Nanda Anand, the Asia Pacific region communication lead of inDrive, told the Post via WhatsApp.

“Nepal is an exciting market and we entered the market to support local communication and connect drivers and passengers for affordable and convenient mobility solutions.”

The company declined to disclose the number of riders and rides in Nepal.

inDrive became popular in a short time among Nepalis as it launched the apps where service seekers were able to negotiate on the fare rates.

For Pathao, currently Pokhara and Butwal are the top-performing markets. “Growth is picking up gradually in other cities as well,” Hamal said.

Pathao plans to launch its service in auto-rickshaws, the popular mode of transport in most of the Tarai region. “We have expanded the service to allow service seekers to book rides from one city to another.” Pathao takes a commission of 20 percent from each bike ride.

According to Pathao, there are more than 200,000 people involved with the platform, including more than 90,000 bike riders, 10,000 taxi drivers and 5,000 food delivery boys.

The two other companies—Tootle and InDrive—did not disclose their figures.

In February this year, the government classified ride-hailing services as a service-oriented industry under the Industrial Enterprises Act 2020. This gives ride-hailing companies legal status, seven years after they started operations in Nepal.

But the government has been dilly-dallying the provision to bring the guidelines which manage the ride-hailing companies by regulating the fares.

The draft guidelines for ride-hailing propose registering cars and motorbikes used for ride-hailing, similar to traditional taxis, operating them under the regulations of the Ministry of Transport.

Under the guidelines the companies would have to renew their operations annually at the transport management offices.

The guidelines will also regulate the fare and have made passenger insurance mandatory.

The Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act 1993 has mentioned that vehicles registered for private use should not be used for public transportation.

Bagmati province officially legalised ride-hailing services in June 2022, but did not issue any guidelines or policy.

According to the 60th annual report of the Auditor General, there are 25 ride-hailing companies in Nepal using the global positioning system (GPS) and digital platforms, but none of them are registered for their current operations.
