Paoay Church - a must-see spot in your Ilocos itinerary

Paoay Church is one of the landmark attractions in Ilocos Norte — and it is one that you shouldn’t miss!

Officially known as the Saint Augustine Church , the church is known for its beautiful Spanish-era architecture. It was constructed between 1694 and 1710 by Augustinian friars and is renowned for its blend of Baroque, Gothic, and Oriental styles. Its most striking feature is its massive buttresses, made of stones, which were ingeniously incorporated into the structure to withstand earthquakes.

In 1993, Paoay Church was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once here, don’t forget to take photos of the PAOAY signage in front of the church. Marvel at the beauty of the church and stroll around the surrounding restaurants, food stalls, and souvenir shops. We particularly recommend dropping by Kusina Valentin for a bite of pinakbet pizza while enjoying the view of the Paoay Church.

Bangui Wind Farm - one of the must-see attractions in Ilocos Norte

The Bangui Wind Mills is a set of 20 colossal wind turbines standing along the coastline of Bangui Bay. A project aimed at generating hydro-electric power for electricity, it has since become one of the most popular Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Each wind turbine at Bangui stands at an impressive height of around 70 meters (230 feet), with massive blades spanning over 41 meters (135 feet) in diameter. Together, they form a captivating sight against the backdrop of the sea and clear skies.

When visiting here, don’t forget to check out the souvenir shop for miniature windmills that you can take home and check out other nearby activities, such as ATV rides.

Location: Bangui

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations

The Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is one of the most popular tourist spots in Ilocos Norte. This geological wonder was carved by relentless forces of wind and sea along the coast of Burgos. Its name, “kapurpurawan” came from the Ilocano word “puraw” (or white), referring to the unique white limestone rocks found in the area.

To get here, you need to walk for about 3 kilometers from the main road or go on a horseback ride. Once you reach the rock formations, take a moment to enjoy the view of the limestone along the ocean and feel the fresh breeze. It’s a spot that’s as atypical as it is arresting.

Pro Tip : Visit here during early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh sun glares.

Location: Burgos

Paoay Sand Dunes art installation

One of the best things to do in Ilocos Norte is doing the 4×4 jeepney ride at the Paoay Sand Dunes ! This vast expanse of sand, continuously shaped by relentless forces of wind, offers a natural playground for adrenaline junkies and nature enthusiasts.

Start your adventure with the 4×4 ride across undulating terrain, navigating steep slopes and dips under the guidance of experienced drivers. Make a stopover along the beach for fun photographs. If seeking an extra dose of adrenaline, try sandboarding down the dunes, which you can do either standing up or sitting down.

You can also take photos of art installations at the sand dunes, like the Stacked Stones, Mirror Installation, and Temptation Island sculptures.

Click here to book a Paoay Sand Dunes adventure ride via Klook .

Malacanang of the North

Also located in the town of Paoay, the Malacañang of the North is a stately mansion that once served as the official residence of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his family. The state is now open as a museum, offering a glimpse into their opulent lifestyle.

Constructed in the 1970s, the mansion is characterized by its spacious layout, imposing façade, and meticulous attention to detail (check out the grand staircase, built according to a superstition in luck).

You can explore the various rooms at the mansion, including the lavish furnishings, portraits, and photographs. Don’t forget to check out the balcony and second-floor windows for a beautiful view of Paoay Lake across.

Patapat Viaduct

The Patapat Viaduct is one of the classic must-sees especially if it’s your first time in Ilocos Norte.

Constructed to bypass a treacherous section of the North Luzon Expressway, the Patapat Viaduct serves as a vital link between the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Valley. However, beyond its practical function as a transportation artery, the viaduct has become a popular tourist attraction in its own right.

The viaduct spans approximately 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) and is supported by elegant arches, similar to those seen in Europe. Perfected on the edge of the coastal cliffs, it offers panoramic views of the ocean, with waves crashing against the rocky shores.

It’s common for tourists to take pictures on the side — and even middle — of the road. If you’re planning to do this, just be safe and watch out for incoming vehicles on either side!

Location: Pagudpud

The Sinking Bell Tower is a historical landmark in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. It was built during the Spanish Colonial Era and has earned its nickname due to rumors that the tower is sinking an inch per year. According to local stories, in the past, it was possible for a person mounted on a horse to pass through the gates, but today you’d have to crawl through to get inside.

But is it really sinking? Sadly, getting inside the tower is currently prohibited so it is not possible to try it for yourself. According to our guide in our Ilocos tour, the bell tower is not actually sinking — rather, roads were built higher.

Another interesting fact about this bell tower is that it is located several meters away from the St. William Cathedral which it was built for.

Regardless of what you believe about the Sinking Bell Tower, it is still one of the must-see Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Location: Laoag City

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

There is something charming about lighthouses. Perhaps it’s their unique architecture or the fact that they are perched on high locations with the most amazing views!

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a Spanish Colonial-era lighthouse built atop a hill, overlooking the scenic coastline of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. It makes for a quick stopover during your Ilocos Norte itinerary and one that will leave you with great photos (and memories).

You can explore the base of the lighthouse, look at the items in the small museum, and of course appreciate the gorgeous view of the ocean from above. Don’t be shy in getting creative when it comes to picture taking; ask the guides at the lighthouse to show you the best spots!

To get here, you need to ride a tricycle to the parking area near the lighthouse. There are also souvenir shops and food stalls you can stop by along the way.

Burgos Wind Farm in Ilocos

One of the two wind farms in the Ilocos Region, the Burgos Wind Farm is a 600-hectare project featuring 50 colossal wind turbines built along the rugged coastline in Burgos. The wind farm is so large that it covers three barangays and powers over 2 million households.

Similar to the Bangui Wind Farm, this place is also open to tourists who wish to see the windmills up close and take pictures of the structures against the backdrop of the ocean. Make sure to wear your best OOTD because this is one of the most scenic tourist spots in Ilocos Norte!

Pro Tip : Go here in the late afternoon to catch the amazing sunset views!

Next up on our list of Ilocos Norte tourist spots that you should see is Blue Lagoon (locally known as Maira-ira Beach), a white-sand beach aptly named for its vibrant blue hues.

The clear waters of Blue Lagoon are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and watersports such as banana boat, paddleboarding, and more. During the rainy season, Blue Lagoon — along with other spots in Pagudpud — becomes a surfing spot for beginner and pro surfers, with waves from 2 to 10 feet high.

While it is possible to visit Blue Lagoon on a day trip, it’s ideal to stay here overnight to make the most of your stay. There are plenty of resorts and homestays that you can book, depending on your preferences and budget.

From the Blue Lagoo, you can also visit nearby tourist spots including Bantay Abot Cave and Kabigan Falls .

Click here to book a Pagudpud tour via Klook .

Nestled along the coastline of Pagudpud is Saud Beach, a picturesque paradise renowned for its white sands, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil ambiance. Many attest that Saud Beach is one of the most underrated beaches in the Philippines; in fact, in 2023, Travel & Leisure listed it in their picks of Most Beautiful Beaches in the World .

Saud Beach is a great place for swimming for families, along with other watersports activities. There are also plenty of beachside resorts and cottages that you can rent overnight or in a day, as well as restaurants and bars for local and seafood delicacies.

Despite its beauty, Saud Beach remains relatively less crowded compared to Blue Lagoon and other beach destinations in the Ilocos Region.

If you’re looking to explore beyond the beach, Saud Beach is nearby other attractions in Pagudpud, such as Bangui Wind Farm, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, and Blue Lagoon.

Bacarra domeless tower

The Ilocos Region is home to some of the most beautiful Spanish-era churches, and one of those is located at the town of Bacarra.

Bacarra Church (also called  St. Andrew the Apostle Church ) was built in 1593, featuring Baroque architecture with a prominent red brick exterior. Beside is it the Domeless Bell Tower, which was damaged by several earthquakes in the past until one finally toppled off its roofing.

The Bacarra Church is a beautiful spot to visit especially for those who love architecture. There is also a museum beside it that houses various artifacts about the town’s history.

Location: Bacarra

Kabigan Falls in Ilocos Norte

Kabigan Falls is an 80-feet waterfall tucked away in the lush forests of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It is a secluded spot ideal for those who are looking for a short nature trip, with an ice-cold basin perfect for summer days.

Getting here is easy; in fact, it is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the area. You are required to secure a guide and then trek for 20-30 minutes across the jungle, depending on your pace. You can also go on a carabao ride and then trek for the rest of the way.

Make sure to bring snacks, water, and towels with you because there are no commercial structures in the waterfall area.

Pro Tip : Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

If you like going to beaches but hate the crowd, you’ll love the next item in our must-see tourist spots in Ilocos Norte.

Badoc Island is a privately owned island with a gorgeous white-sand beach, located 25 minutes away by boat from La Virgen Milagrosa Cove in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. This secluded spot is ideal for beach bumming, swimming, and of course taking lots of IG-worthy photos! Other activities include snorkeling, freediving, and hiking to see unique rock formations.

Since there are no commercial infrastructure in the island, only day tours are allowed.

As of 2022 , the island is listed for sale, with the local government hoping for it to be developed into a luxury resort. As of this writing, it is still part of the tourist spots of the Ilocos Norte tourism.

Location: Badoc

Paoay Lake Water Park - one of the newest Ilocos Norte tourist spots

There is more to Ilocos Norte than its heritage structures, beaches, and windmills.

Opened to the public in 2022, Paoay Lake Water Park is one of the newest attractions in Ilocos Norte, featuring a hotel, a nice lakefront, and a sprawling water park with over 30 obstacle courses. Aside from the obstacle courses, there are also other activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, and volleyball.

For those who just want to chill, you can relax in one of the chic bean bags at the beachside while enjoying a summer drink of your choice.

You can visit here on a day pass or you can stay at the hotel overnight.

The easiest way to get to Ilocos is thru Laoag International Airport. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines flies from Manila to Laoag City.

Alternatively, you can also ride a bus from Manila to several destinations in Ilocos, including Laoag, Pagudpud, Vigan City, etc.

Click here to book a bus from Manila to Laoag City or Manila to Pagudpud .

Here is a sample Ilocos itinerary for 3 days, covering the best destinations in both Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur : Pagudpud, Laoag City, and and Vigan City .

This is a standard itinerary offered by travel agencies in the Ilocos Region.

*I personally do not recommend any destination that engages in picture taking with captive tigers. I believe there are alternative animal sanctuaries that promote conservation.

There are plenty of resorts and hotels in Ilocos Norte. Here are our top picks on where to stay:

  • Paoay Lake JLP Resort. A hotel resort that overlooks Paoay Lake.

Laoag City:

  • Java Hotel . Beautiful Filipino-style hotel with pool and alfresco restaurant.
  • Amici Resort Hotel . Filipino-style hotel with private casitas and lush gardens.
  • Palm Grove Saud Resort . A short walk away from SAud Beach, with pool and restaurant.
  • It can be especially hot in Ilocos Norte especially during summer. Always bring your summer essentials, including a hat, sunscreen, and reusable travel bottle.
  • Always bring cash, since many tourist attractions are far from ATMs.

GETTING AROUND ILOCOS NORTE, PHILIPPINES

Getting around Ilocos Norte can be made in various ways. Of course, the most comfortable and the one that I also used on my last visit to the province was the rent-a-car. However, for those who would want a various mode of transportation or for backpackers  who are traveling alone or with just one companion, the following might be of great help:

  • PRIVATE CARS & VANS. You can book a van or a private car through your hotel. The average price is P3,500.00 for the whole day, inclusive of a private chauffeur.
  • BUS. Prices vary, although bus owners usually collect a fee between  P25.00-P60.00 per passenger for an ordinary bus depending on the destination and a minimum of P50.00 for air-conditioned buses.
  • Colorful utility vehicles that ply the standard routes. The average fee is P11.00 per kilometer.
  • TRICYCLE. The most common and the easiest way to get around town, especially if short distances are involved. In other Asian countries, trikes are called “tuk-tuk.”  PHP 11.00   is charged for the first kilometer, after which it is negotiable. Higher rates are charged for outer limits. To avoid any misunderstanding, we recommend that you and the driver agree on the fare before embarking on the journey.
  • CALESA. An exciting way to experience Ilocos Norte is to take the Calesa. The minimum charge is P15.00 for the first kilometer.

Rates may change without prior notice .

WHAT TO EAT WHEN IN ILOCOS NORTE

Food forms a significant factor in one’s experience especially if you are visiting the place for the first time. As a traveler, I am not particular about the location or the ambiance, but what I am usually looking for is the authenticity of the taste. Each time I travel, I would want to try something that also tells about the culture of the place.

I have listed below, Ilocano food which I genuinely like.

Long before I visited Ilocos, I have read a lot of articles about Ilocos’ bagnet. I tried this bagnet on my first meal at Ilocos, and I didn’t regret.  The secret of making the Ilocos Bagnet is the slowly deep-frying of pork meat usually in slabs in a low-medium fire. The pork is usually marinated overnight with some natural spices available in the area.

Dinardaran (Crispy Dinuguan)

Another personal favorite that you must try when visiting Ilocos Norte is the Dinardaraan. Dinardaran is the Ilocano term for dinuguan or blood stew.   I don’t know if this is true to all Dinardaran, but what I tried was the version that has crisp in it, which for me is a nice twist considering that it gives the food a different texture. For this dish, they usually use large intestines and a bit of pork loin and pork fat, deep-fried until they are crunchy.

Poqui poqui is a local vegetable Ilocano dish using the eggplant as the main ingredient. Poqui-poqui is a grilled eggplant, peeled, then sauteed with lots of onions, tomatoes, and eggs.

A perfect pair maybe for bagnet is the pinakbet. This vegetable dish uses mainly the ampalaya or bitter melon, eggplant, okra, and string beans. For an added flavor they add some pork and fish sauce.

Perfect as a snack or even as a complete meal. The empanada in Ilocos is one thing which you must try when visiting the Province. The main ingredients for empanada include rice flour for the crust with achuete (for the color); whole egg and mongo sprout or parboiled mongo or grated green papaya for regular orders. Sometimes, Ilocos’ longanisa is added for the filling. Empanada is best when dipped in spicy vinegar.

I was intrigued the first time I saw the tinubong which leads me to try it. Tinubong is a delicacy that is very popular in the entire Ilocos Region. The name of this delicacy is derived from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano. This native delicacy is made of grounded glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk, and some coconut meat. These ingredients are being placed in its container (tubong) then steamed. This delicacy can be served as a dessert or as a snack.

Isabel suites

I have stayed in two hotels when I visited Ilocos Norte. I can’t remember anymore the name of the other hotel because I don’t intend to recommend it. It was a 5 story hotel without an elevator, so I’m sure you won’t be happy being there. The first hotel which I stayed overnight and the one I stayed on my last night in my entire Ilocos visit was the Isabel Suites. This hotel has 2 buildings (new and old) facing each other. Located at the heart of the city, Isabel suites offer a nice room at a reasonable price with free wifi. [ Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots + Itinerary, Hotels ]

One must-see place when in Ilocos Norte is the Malacanang of the North. “Malacanang ti Amianan” is the other term used by Ilocanos to describe Malacañang of the North. 18 Things to do in Laoag + Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots

18 Things to do in Laoag + Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots

Thank goodness for air travel, people no longer have to endure over 12 hours of road trip from Manila to reach the exquisite Laoag City and the rest of the Ilocos region. This small, compact city is considered the jewel of the northern Philippines with its reasonable amounts of stunning views and heritage sites.

The most popular attraction in Laoag City is La Paz San Dunes where one can enjoy a heart-wrenching 4×4 ride or a more leisurely sandboarding activity. You may also visit the 16th Century Laoag Church, first built of wood and thatch. Today, it’s an impressive sight of Italian renaissance architecture reminiscent of the city’s Spanish-colonial era. Laoag City is also surrounded by prized attractions, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site Paoay Church, Malacañang of the North, Bangui Windmills, Kapurpurawan Rock Formations, Rizal Amusement Park, Vigan, and the beaches of Pagudpud.

Here’s a list of beautiful places to visit in Laoag including top things to do & the best Laoag tourist spots.

To make your trip planning easy, I’ve added links to the locations on Google Maps. Feel free to click/tap on the links posted. Then, use the “save” feature on the Google Maps app. Seeing all your saved locations on the map will help you get started on planning your Laoag itinerary and know the best areas to stay, near places you want to go.

Must-see Tourist Spots in Ilocos Norte!

As the first Philippine province I have visited, Ilocos Norte never fails to amuse me. “There’s no place like home!”

Home sweet home! Yehey! Good day! Live the life! Guides soon on the blog! Turista Boy / www.turistaboy.com #Ilokanoak #TuristaBoy #WhenInLaoag A photo posted by Aldrick 'chiki' Zabala Agpaoa (@chikinensis) on Mar 23, 2016 at 4:50pm PDT

The province of Ilocos Norte is truly unexpected – you get to see new and surprising tourist attractions and feel new experiences along the way! There is still much to see, you just have to discover and promote it, not to mention, we should be Responsible Travelers, too.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

This part of the blog is dedicated to having a (more or less) detailed look at the more popular tourist spots in these provinces that I and my friends visited this year (plus other attractions I have been before, too.)

All about Ilocos Norte

Out of the 21 municipalities and 2 cities of Ilocos Norte, I have been to 10 of them and every municipality and city have something different to offer. If you happen to visit these tourist attractions, too, you will see flags of Ilocos Norte with a mustache above it. The mustache idea came from Juan Luna , a famous and world-renowned Ilocano painter who is the brother of General Antonio Luna who had the same and who are both natives of Badoc .

Welcome to Ilocos Norte!

Welcome to Ilocos Norte!

The mustache first became the signature symbol of Paoay for their “ Paoay Kumakaway ” Tourism Campaign until it became the province’s tourism symbol eventually. So every time you see colorful flags printed with “ Ilocos Norte ” and a mustache above it, it probably means you’re in a tourist attraction!

Approximately 504 Kilometers away from Manila and 295 Kilometers away from Baguio , Ilocandia is really worth the distance (and worth the wait from that long trip!)

( I would be discussing Ilocos Norte first and then will include Ilocos Sur on the latter part of this blog! )

When arriving in Ilocos Norte, almost all of the bus terminals are located near the Central Business District of Laoag so it is a walk or tricycle ride away from the Provincial Capitol and other tourist spots in Laoag . What’s good when you are in Laoag is that almost all of the tourist attractions are near with each other.

(These places are grouped according to each other’s proximity)

Fort Ilocandia

The Fort Ilocandia Façade - Ilocos Norte

The Fort Ilocandia Façade

Welcome to The Fort - Ilocos Norte

Welcome to The Fort!

Fort Ilocandia is the premier resort and casino in Ilocos Norte. It is then the favorite vacation spot (until now) of most expatriates especially when they arrive at the Laoag International Airport . Found in the westernmost part of the city, the 77-hectare “Fort” is more than just a resort that anyone can enjoy – plus its 2-Kilometer share of the Ilocos shoreline! In its main building, made mostly of bricks and concrete (an Ilocano signature in architecture), are several pictures of the Marcos family and the resorts’ milestones as well.

The Fort has truly preserved what is truly Ilocano – from the ambiance, the hospitality, and the people.

La Paz Sand Dunes - Ilocos Norte

La Paz Sand Dunes Registration Area

Our friend, who is a local of Laoag, too, recommended that we experience the La Paz Sand Dunes instead from that of Paoay’s. Being the location of the first installment of the movie “MadMax,” I could say that the terrain is more rugged (which is more fun when riding a 4×4) and that the course is much longer. Our driver-guide actually extended our ride for an hour, as the actual ride only lasts for about 30 minutes or so. The site, too, has been declared as a  National Geological Monument by the National Committee on Geological Sciences in 1993. It is also the location of some popular Filipino movies like “Panday” and “Himala,” to name a few. 🙂

4x4-ing - Ilocos Norte

Sandboarding (with finesse!) Hahaha!

The package for the sand dunes is PhP 2500.00. So it is better to go there in groups. (We were 5 when we went there). It includes the 4×4 ride with 2 to 3 stopovers for picture-taking and the unlimited sand-boarding after. It is better if you go there in the late afternoon so that the sun’s heat will not be that harmful, plus you can get to see the sun set on the West Philippine Sea.

If you want to maximize the fun, you can contact our driver-guide, Kuya Joel Wilford at +63 948 502 6591. You can also have photo souvenirs at their registration booth for PhP 150.00 per picture.

Ilocos Norte Capitol

The Ilocos Norte Provincial Capitol at Night (Photo by Jam Dario)

The Ilocos Norte Provincial Capitol at Night ( Photo by Jam Dario )

Personally, it is one of the most-appealing provincial capitols I have been to so far. (Wait ‘til I get to see Negros Occidental’s Capitol, which is argued to be the most beautiful provincial capitol in the Philippines.) It is because the capitol can be seen right past the Tobacco Monopoly Monument where the giant letters of L-A-O-A-G are after passing the Gilbert Bridge .

It is also where you will find the giant letters of “Ilocos Norte” – a picture-perfect spot for tourists and locals alike. The capitol is more beautiful when it is lighted up in the evening. It is also near the Laoag City Hall and Baratilyo Food stalls where you can enjoy the famous Ilocano food “ empanada ” and longganisa alongside other staple street foods.

Tobacco Monopoly Monument

The Tobacco Monopoly Monument - Ilocos Norte

The Tobacco Monopoly Monument (Photo from www.tripadvisor.com )

Commemorating what has been one of the most historic revolts in the country, the Tobacco Monopoly Monument – which is situated within the confines of Aurora Park – remembers the sacrifices of their forefathers in fighting for freedom, especially in the monopolization of Tobacco in the region. This is the very first tourist spot you will get to see when arriving in Laoag. It is also just right across the Provincial Capitol and adjacent to the City Hall of Laoag.

Laoag Public Market

Laoag Central Public Market - Ilocos Norte

Laoag Central Public Market ( Photo by www.singlewomantravel.wordpress.com )

It is the capital’s main source of seafood and other Ilocano foods such as Pasuquin’s Biscocho and Paoay’s Cornick, among others. It is also a perfect haven for empanada vendors, too, as their stalls scattered around the market’s vicinity. It is also the loading and unloading area for tricycle drivers and calesa drivers (at only PhP 50.00 per ride within the city)!

St. William’s Cathedral

St. William's Cathedral's Façade - Ilocos Norte

St. William’s Cathedral’s Façade

St. William’s Cathedral, also known as the Laoag Cathedral is the seat of faith in the City. (FYI, St. William is the Patron Saint of Laoag City) Established in 1580, the church has been the refuge of many Christians since the late 16th century.

Sinking Bell tower

As the name implies, the bell tower of St. William’s Cathedral sinks at a rate of approximately 1 centimeter every year. Due to its massive Earthquake Baroque-style structure, and as it is situated over a soft foundation, the bell tower gained such reputation, hence the name.

It is also found a few meters away from the cathedral because, in the early times, this was the style in building the bell towers of churches, some of it, too, are used as watchtowers during wars. Legend has it that a man sitting on a tall horse can freely enter the bell tower’s door. Now, you have to bow down in order to enter (although they have closed the entrance to the public because it is immediately adjacent a major city road.)

Malacañang of the North

"<yoastmark

Malacañang ti Amianan in the Ilocano dialect, this is the former home of the Marcoses during President Ferdinand E. Marcos ’ incumbency. Today, the house is now a museum with all the memorabilia of the former first family with all furniture intact. A minimum entrance fee of PhP 30.00 is charged before entering. The house-turned-museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 0900 H – 1600 H. It is closed on Mondays. The site can be reached via tricycle with a minimum fare of PhP 15-20.

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay (Paoay Church)

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay - Ilocos Norte

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay (circa 1593)

As only one of the four Spanish Colonial Earthquake Baroque-style churches enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Paoay Church became an instant signature tourist spot in the municipality of Paoay . Its construction began in the late 17 th century dedicated to Saint Augustine.

Its distinctively-designed buttresses add to the overall appeal of the church’s façade.

Nana Rosa’s Chichacorn

Nana Rosa's - Ilocos Norte

Nana Rosa’s!

Nana Rosa’s Chichacorn , I can say, is the best chichacorn that can be found in Paoay! With many flavors to choose from, its crunchiness is one of a kind. It is also cheaper if you buy their products at their main factory in Paoay. It is one of the famous brands of chichacorn in Ilocos.

Café Herencia – Home of the Pinakbet Pizza

Herencia Restaurant - Home of the "Pinakbet Pizza" - Ilocos Norte

Herencia Restaurant – Home of the “Pinakbet Pizza”

Peculiar to some (and interesting to me), Café Herencia, dubbed as the “Edible Landmark of Ilocos Norte,” is believed and is known to be the home of the original Pinakbet Pizza. Pinakbet is a known Ilocano dish that is a mix of different vegetables cooked in bagoong (fish paste). Here, the ingredients of pinakbet are laid over the pizza dough, baked, then poured with bagoong as its sauce. Yum! It’s definitely a must-try when visiting Paoay. They also have a restaurant in Laoag City. For more information, contact them at +63 77 614 0214.

Riverside Empanadahan

Riverside Empanadahan Centrum - Ilocos Norte

Riverside Empanadahan Centrum

This is Batac’s main hub for empanada sellers. I tell you, it is here where you get to taste on-the-spot made empanadas and Miki (a kind of noodle porridge famous in the Ilocos Region.) Several souvenir shops are also present in the centrum.

Ferdinand Marcos Presidential Center / Mausoleum

Batac: Home of Great Leaders - Ilocos Norte

Batac: Home of Great Leaders

Ferdinand E. Marcos Presidential Center (and Mausoleum) - Ilocos Norte

Ferdinand E. Marcos Presidential Center (and Mausoleum)

The City of Batac is dubbed as the “Home of Great Leaders” because some of the country’s illustrious sons come from this City. To name a few, Gregorio Aglipay , Sen. Rodolfo Biazon , Mariano Marcos ( Ferdinand Marcos ’ father), and Artemio Ricarte (The Father of the Philippine Army ) came from this Municipality-turned-City.

Opened in 1993, this museum is where you will get to see a large number of memorabilia of President Marcos – from his office setup to his personal things, as dedicated in the Ferdinand Marcos Presidential Center. It is also where you will find the celebrated mausoleum of the 20-year dictator. The Presidential Center is open from 0900 H – 1630 H daily and is located in Barangay 10 N Lacub, Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

TuristaBoy Tip :

Cameras not allowed inside Marcos Mausoleum - Ilocos Norte

Picture-taking inside the mausoleum is strictly prohibited. It is also watched over by guards so might as well keep those cameras before entering. The body inside the glass is just a wax figure of the past President and rumor has it that his real coffin is just below it!

Santa Monica Church and Casa del Palacio Real (convent beside Church)

Sta. Monica Church Façade - Ilocos Norte

Sta. Monica Church Façade

Casa del Palacio Real - Ilocos Norte

Casa del Palacio Real ( Photo by www.benjielayug.com )

Believed to be the largest (and the longest) brick church in the entire province of Ilocos Norte, the Santa Monica Church is also rich in history. It was built in 1779 and was first known as San Miguel Church. Around the church’s vicinity also are the 14 Stations of the Cross made from brick. The convent beside it once served as the town’s municipal hall and it also once housed the Colegio de Santa Monica, an affiliate of Lyceo de Manila.

In recent history, the National Museum of the Philippines declared the Church as an “ Important Cultural Property ” in 2009. Also, if you have watched the movie “Heneral Luna,” a portion of the movie was taped here!

Sarrat Centro

Some of the tourist attractions in Sarrat’s Centro are: Rizal Monument, Fabian Ver House / Villa Ver, Scout Albano Monument, Rit-ritemon Cayong Monument, Vistuario de Sarrat, and newest addition is the Ferdinand Marcos Monument.

Madongan Dam

The Madongan River Diversion Dam in the Municipality of Dingras is now one of the newest and up-and-coming tourist destinations in Ilocos Norte (located in San Marcelino, Dingras). Although one of the drying dams in the North, the dam’s natural charm captured the people’s wanderlust to try and discover this destination. I can relate the drying dam’s setup to that of Villa Escudero ’s man-made falls.

The dam, though, is disputed by the Municipalities of Marcos and Dingras which results in the collection of different rental rates in the vicinity. Rental rates of cottages vary from PhP 200-500 (for a day’s stay) and PhP 500-700 (for an overnight stay). Minimal entrance fees are also collected at PhP 10 each and parking fees at PhP 20-50.

As of writing, there are no firm information if there is a public transportation system into and from the area. So for now, it is better if you have a private vehicle with you. The dam is also 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours away from Laoag City. For more information, click HERE !

Nueva Era Eco Park

Although far from the tourist’s eye, the Nueva Era Eco Park should never be missed. Located in maybe one of the farthest municipalities of Ilocos Norte, the Nueva Era Eco Park has a number of attractions to offer its visitors, too. From their swimming pools, their souvenir shops, museum, dining areas, cottages, and a hanging bridge to name a few, This Eco Park will bring you closer to nature. Opened on January 8, 2014, The Eco Park also features villas of the indigenous Tingguian tribe living in the Municipality. For more information and for reservations, contact Nueva Era’s Tourism Officer, Ria Rivera at +63 915 258 2512.

San Nicolas

Robinsons Ilocos Norte

Robinsons Ilocos Norte

It is believed to be the largest mall in the province. Now, it is also contested by another mall giant in San Nicolas as well. It is 10 minutes away from Laoag via jeep or tricycle. The mall is open daily from 1000 H – 2100 H.

Blue Lagoon / Hannah’s Beach Resort

Blue Lagoon (Photo by Joni Macatbag) - Ilocos Norte

Blue Lagoon! ( Photo by Joni Macatbag )

It is one of the most celebrated beach shores in Ilocos Norte. 2 hours away from Laoag, the Blue Lagoon (Maira-ira Beach) is where the famous Hannah’s Beach Resort is situated.

Patapat Viaduct

It is, if not, the most famous bridge up north. This coastal bridge with a length of 1.3 Kilometers connects the Maharlika Highway linking Cagayan and Ilocos Norte. It is also the 4 th longest bridge in the country.

Bangui Windmills

This is the very first wind farm in the province and was installed during the incumbency of Ferdinand Jr. Marcos . The iconic 20-unit wind farm stretches along Bangui Bay’s 9-Kilometer shoreline facing the West Philippine Sea. It provides at least 33 Megawatts of power to the province. If coming from Pagudpud , it is 30 minutes away. It is 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Laoag City.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations - Ilocos Norte

Famous for its scenic rock formations, the Kapurpurawan Rock Formations are one of the more famous tourist spots in Ilocos Norte. (“Puraw” in Ilocano means “white” in English.) There are also horseback riding services for PhP 100, touring you around the vicinity. It is 30 minutes away from the Bangui Windmills.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Cape Bojeador (Burgos) Lighthouse - Ilocos Norte

Cape Bojeador (Burgos) Lighthouse

It is the Northwestern-most point in the Philippines. The octagon-shaped lighthouse was first lit on March 30, 1892, and can be seen as from the Municipality of Pasuquin and Bangui on a clear day. After over 100 years, it still functions as a welcoming beacon to international ships entering the archipelago. It was declared a National Historical Landmark on August 13, 2004, and a National Cultural Treasure on June 20, 2005. It is located approximately 40 Kilometers north of Laoag City. Upon climbing the lighthouse, you will see a panoramic view of Cape Bojeador and the West Philippine Sea. The site is 20 minutes away from the Rock Formations.

DESTINATION ILOCOS NORTE: Experience The Breathtaking Wonders

tourist ilocos norte

Touchdown Laoag, the sudden thud against the runaway had my eyes peeled. I peered at the darkness outside opposite from my window seat view yearning for the sunrise – yet the pitch dark of the night still cloaked the yet sleepy town. The cold breeze slapped awake my sleepy eyes as we disembarked from our Cebu Pacific Flight from Manila landing finally at the runway. The chilly temperature inches its way through the thin layers of my clothing led me to hurry inside the arrival halls, not knowing that the Ilocos Region Tourism Team was excitedly waiting for us. The red welcome lei and their warm smiles – Ms. Evangeline, Ms. Araceli, Ms. Levy, Mr. Michael, and our dearest guide Ms. Arlene – officially received us at Ilocos Norte.

After completing all of our respective luggages, the tourist bus awaited us outside and whisked our sleepy bodies to the Sola Hotel for our prepared breakfast as the morning sun finally flew high from the horizon. Momentarily, my lips longing for hot coffee finally had a first sip. The Tapa I ordered was a hearty one. The slivers of savory tender marinated beef meat seemingly made a perfect high five with the local vinegar dip coupled with the garlicky fried rice. The atchara is a notable palate cleanser after each spoonful of these heavenly goodies.

tourist ilocos norte

The Ilocos Norte Province itself is a tourism hub offering its valued guests the best of nature, history, culture, architecture, creative arts, gastronomy, and heritage. One must spend almost a month, I think, to truly delve deeper into every destination and digest every narrative each respective beholds. Here is a collective narrative of our experience during the Familiarization Tour organized by the Department of Tourism – Region 1 Laoag Satellite Office.

PAOAY ADVENTURES

SUBA SAND DUNES

tourist ilocos norte

The heart-pounding and adrenaline-kicking Suba Sand Dune rides via a 4×4 vehicle is a good energetic start for our Ilocos Norte escapade. With the assigned vehicle ready upon our arrival, we roared through the undulating terrain, passing through twists and turns that certainly made us shout our hearts out – full force! Reaching the coastline is a different story. The sandy beach and the crashing waves were a brief rest from the heart-pumping ride.

The steep valley drop is the best – as if gravity left us for a very brief moment as soon as our vehicle dived into a seemingly sheer free fall. In the desert oasis where you can uniquely surf the steep face of a dune. I tried a single attempt on a sitting positing on the metal sheath board and watched my creator friends taking their turns under the hut. I couldn’t help but marvel at the breathtaking beauty of this outworldly beauty while marveling at the Agoho trees afar dancing along with the Monsoon winds from the different ridges. The experience was truly exhilarating and left an adventurous memory – finally, I was able to experience it after a failed attempt almost a decade ago.

MALACAÑANG OF THE NORTH

tourist ilocos norte

Mesmerized by the view of the Paoay Lake, visiting this grandiose mansion would provide a definite narrative of the love of opulence by the Marcos family. The architectural marvel evident from its exterior up to its interior speaks of their liking of everything evoking grand and beautiful. The staircase itself is a statement with the exact numbers of their requirement. The balcony is the best part. The breathtaking view of the placid lake welcomes you. Being a museum, the curated displays include some furnishings and important memorabilia that defined their regime.

NAGBACALAN LOOM WEAVING

tourist ilocos norte

The tedious and laborious weaving of the Abel textile is alive through the efforts of this weaving community. I was not able to visit its selling portion but spent my precious minutes marveling at the expert hands of the weavers. Currently, they have 23 active members in their cooperative and have recently received support from the Tourism Promotions Board. I had a brief discussion with Ms. Priscilla Gelacio, a 60-year-old weaver. She proudly shared that this industry enabled her to have 3 college graduates. Apart from sharing stories, there is a brief discussion about different techniques, one technique that utilizes 5-foot paddles for a more intricate design. I could only imagine the training they had undergone to master muscle memory. Being there seems to have transported me into a whimsical show of industrial choreography and symphony of the mechanical wooden thumps.

PINAKBET PIZZA AT KUSINA VALENTIN

tourist ilocos norte

Always an iconic dining experience at Paoay, Kusina Valentin offers its homegrown variety of pizza topping from Pinakbet dish. Married with the dainty creaminess of the cheesy toppings and the umami salty goodness of bagoong, the Italian and Filipino fusion of flavors exploded on my palate on every bite. It was my first time to taste it. It is a shame that I missed this gastronomic wonder almost a decade ago. A live demonstration of Pinakbet Pizza making by their own chef is a plus.

Its thick buttress, the humongous bell tower, and the detailed facade are the shining glory of Paoay’s tourism landscape.  A well-frequented destination thanks to its iconic beauty that stood the times, the Paoay Church exerts its dominance above the town’s skyline. The gentle wavy buttresses at its side seem to hug its corresponding walls. I could not help but stare at its timeless grandeur. The famed Church is declared by the National Government as a National Cultural Treasure. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site belonging to the Baroque Churches of Philippines group.

BADOC ADVENTURES

NHCP JUAN AND ANTONIO LUNA MUSEUM

tourist ilocos norte

Located in the town of Badoc, we got to indulge our senses in the old world of art and politics at the Juan and Antonio Luna Museum in Badoc. A two-story museum building featuring exposed adobe bricks that evoke the stories of the past century. We got a guided tour that helped us translate the deep and colorful narrative of each curated display by the renowned painter and sculptor Juan Luna. The upper floor tells the story of the political and military-sided brother – General Antonio Luna. From his prowess in pharmacy up to his valiant stories in warfare was the curated display. An adjoining balcony connects to the main upper hall with a view of the backyard. Have you heard about the painting “The Parisian Life?”, you have to visit and understand its translation.

BADOC CHURCH

tourist ilocos norte

Stepping on the church front yard, the facade readily caught my attention. The seemingly yin-yang style, the dark bell tower, and the main facade clad in white stood as a brimming architectural marvel in Badoc town. Erected and designed with Baroque style to withstand the actively seismic town, its walls bear the original bricks that tell the stories of the centuries.  Entering its halls through its side doors, I cannot help but marvel at its thick buttresses – truly a historical architectural wonder of Badoc town.

Devotees experience the tranquility of spiritual solace at La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, where they gather to pay homage to the revered Marian icon. Feel the embrace of faith as believers offer prayers of gratitude and supplication in this sacred shrine, believed to be a source of miracles and blessings for countless believers.

BACARRA ADVENTURES

CHURCH OF BACARRA AND COMMUNITY MUSEUM

tourist ilocos norte

Upon our arrival at the spacious church patio, we were welcomed by their prim yet energetic tourism officer of Bacarra, Ms. Dina. It was certainly a journey back in time to the historic Baccara Church and Museum. The heat of the noon time sun was not a hindrance for me to marvel at the enduring beauty of the church structure while Ms. Dina shared some historical facts about the church structure. The domeless bell tower narrative is what makes this church unique among its sisters in the Ilocos provinces. In its surrounding yard, ruins of the old convent still secretly witness the advancement of times. The adjoining building is set as a community museum where curated displays donated by the locals tell a narrative of their spiritual, political, and economic past. Be careful though when your interest focus on the flooded underground tunnel the church backyard it beholds. A steep staircase leads to an underground flooded with placid waters wreaked with vegetation. A lot of questions hounded the visiting team, yet this inundated portion has to be officially explored by experts.

The Bacarra Church also is a shrine for their miraculous Marian icon. As Ms. Dina shared, whenever locals have something important coming in their respective, they make a revered visit to the church shrine and pray about their intentions. Apart from the church and museum complex, the town of Bacarra also has more destinations to offer. More historical markers are in placed around the town, and its unique paper thin crispy shrimp fritter Okoy, and their humble shoreline that offers stunning sunset views.

LAOAG ADVENTURES

LA PRECIOSA RESTAURANT

tourist ilocos norte

A homegrown restaurant made famous for its delightful Carrot Cake – La Preciosa should be included in your food trip escapade in Ilocos. We had a filling and hearty lunch here during our visit and we got to try the dishes recommended by the Tourism Staff. The Pansit Lusay looks simple but the bold savory and umami flavors coupled with the longganisa is a conflicting testament. I tried one serving of their Crispy Dinuguan and its sauce tasted fresh and a bit relishingly good, but my Kapampangan palate sought for a more tangy aftertaste. The Poqui Poqui is iconic and features a mushy texture yet the expected flavors ensnared my attention – the eggplant and eggy goodness abound in every spoonful of it. The Papaitan soup was divine – the bitter flavors are well balanced with the zesty tones and deeper meaty flavors from the innards. Nothing strikes differently with their Chicken Adobo.

This is our official stay while in Ilocos Norte. Me and my buddy Christian were billeted in a Classic Twin Room featuring two twin beds with plush pillows, a private balcony, a private toilet and a shower room with a working hot shower. Our assigned room has no bidet, sadly. Our check-in was smooth and have bespoke assistance from their staff.

The Hotel Facade features its iconic towering cogon roofings that truly call the attention of every passer-by. Located along the main highway, it is hard not to miss the Java Hotel. Among its amenities is an inviting pool which is illuminated at night, a tennis court, lots of lounging areas, and an open-air reception hall.

We had a hearty dinner at their Eagle’s Nest Bar and Restaurant and enjoyed their flavorful buffet spread. I returned twice for the Garlic Eggplant. We also have a wine-tasting segment featuring their local basi and dragonfruit wines.

The dinner event also came in with a presentation from the Cebu Pacific Marketing team. I met again Ms. Tricia Tan, their Marketing Manager. Among the highlights of the airline’s presentation is its focus on efficiency and passenger care. Ms. Tan shared their revised customer care policies and communications, digital bug resolution, and proudly shared their new aircraft acquisitions. Truly, their vision to let #LetEveryJuanFly is at hand.

It is a pity that we only had 8 hours for our Java Hotel stay. Despite the quick staycation, we had a generally good and acceptable experience.

BATAC ADVENTURES

GLORY’S EMPANADA

tourist ilocos norte

We headed to the bustling food court in Batac and sought out one Glory’s empanada stall specializing in this mouthwatering treat. Unique to this dining experience is the opportunity to try to make your own empanada. Watching the skillful staff whisking the ingredients together made it easy, but for the first time, it was nerve-wracking. No culinary journey through Ilocos Norte would be complete without sampling the iconic empanadas of Batac, a beloved local delicacy that’s as delicious as it is distinctive. Made from a crispy pastry filled with a savory filling of ground longganisa, shredded vegetables, and whole egg, these handheld delights made it to my tasting activities. I have to be careful of its piping hot core, allowed to cool a bit before having a bite. Making sure to have all of the elements on my first spoonful, the garlicky umami meaty tones exploded in a lovely array of flavor. With a lunch upcoming after this, just limited myself to a single piece, yet salivating for another serving.

BURGOS ADVENTURES

CAPE BOJEADOR LIGHTHOUSE

tourist ilocos norte

I see it always as a timeless beacon overlooking the rugged coastline of Ilocos Norte. Ascending the seemingly spiraling staircase to the top of this iconic Ilocano landmark and soaking in panoramic views of the azure ocean and rolling hills below always felt surreal. Sauntering at its main deck, the halls bear curated displays exclaiming the structure’s history. The main tower is not accessible to tourist since of its active operation.

The Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a part of the well-frequented and high foot traffic tourism circuit of Ilocos Norte because of the rich narrative it bears and the breathtaking views it beholds from the road deck, the stairway up to its balconies. After our quick venture atop, we had a snack featuring the Dragonfruit offerings of town – from fried spring rolls and its ice cream version. The bread version of it somehow was typical, but the spring roll filling was the rockstar among the three.

EDC BURGOS WINDFARM

tourist ilocos norte

Capping our Ilocos escapade with the perfect sunset here at EDC Burgos Windfarm is my top favorite among all. Surrounded by these gentle giants that roared silently around us was mesmerizing and enthralling.

Located atop a hill, the tourist spot offers visitors a panoramic view of the rugged landscape littered with hundreds of windmills. This truly is a view to behold. The crashing waves from afar meet the strong burst of the Amihan monsoon winds seemingly wrestling each other in mother nature’s show of brunt strength.

How I wish I spent the final daylight until the sun fully hugged the horizon. This moment totally blew my mind, as creative pressure has built on how to give justice at such a glorious view. This certainly sealed our two-day adventure in Ilocos. I can say it is #AbsolutelyAmazingIlocos.

Philippines, US eyeing inclusion of Japan in annual military exercise

Lack of chinese visitors hinders philippines tourism growth, divers in the philippines create nurseries for rescued coral.

MANILA: Philippines and US forces will sink a target ship, retake an island and sail in waters facing the South China Sea in joint military drills that will start next week against the backdrop of maritime tensions with Beijing.

The exercises will "demonstrate our combat-readiness and showcase US and Philippines armed forces’ interoperability,” Colonel Michael Logico (pic), who’s one of the organisers, told foreign correspondents in Manila on Wednesday.

Key drills will be held in Philippine areas near Taiwan and South China Sea, where Manila and Beijing are embroiled in an increasingly tense territorial dispute. Logico said the exercises are not directed at China.

The annual war games, called Balikatan - a Filipino word that translates to shoulder-to-shoulder - will take place from April 22 to May 10 with around 16,770 personnel expected to participate. It comes more than a week after President Joe Biden reaffirmed the US’ "ironclad” commitment to the Philippines and Japan in the first trilateral summit of the nations’ leaders at the White House.

Australian and French troops will take part in some of the drills, while representatives from 14 countries including from Japan, India and Europe will observe, Logico said.

"Assuming everyone arrives, this will be the biggest,” yet of the annual drills, Logico said. Philippine civilian government agencies will also participate in cyber defence and information warfare exercises.

In a first for the yearly war games, US and Philippine navies and coast guards will sail beyond 12 nautical miles off the province of Palawan, which faces the South China Sea, Logico said. The French Navy will also participate in the maritime exercise, he said.

In the northern province of Ilocos Norte, close to Taiwan, the troops will again simulate the sinking of an enemy ship, a decommissioned Philippine Navy vessel.

Armed forces from both countries plan to simulate the retaking of three islands, two of them in northern Philippines. That’s to prepare for a scenario if "someone takes” one of our islands, "we retake it back,” Logico said.

"With or without China - let’s say for example in a parallel universe China did not exist - we would still be doing the exercises,” Logico said. - Bloomberg

90+ Moscow tourist attractions: what to see in Moscow, Russia

90 Moscow tourist attractions | 90 things to do in Moscow, Russia | 90 places to see in Moscow, Russia | 90 places to visit in Moscow, Russia | 90 Moscow landmarks | What to do in Moscow, Russia

A huge list of the best Moscow tourist attractions.

Before the pandemic I used to visit Moscow every year. I would usually go there for a week, and I would still find new places to visit and things to do. Many people don’t realise how huge Moscow is and how many tourist attractions are there. Unfortunately, not all of these fantastic places are maintained, some are abandoned and can be enjoyed from outside only. Still, Moscow has attractions to satisfy the taste and requirements of any tourist and here I have a huge list of more than 90 places.

But let’s start with one of the most famous Moscow landmarks: the Kremlin!

NB : the post is very long, so just go to the table of contents and click on the section that interests you.

The Kremlin and its surroundings

The Kremlin should be in every list of Moscow tourist attractions 😊 You can easily spend a day exploring it and the surroundings.

1. The Kremlin : here you should definitely visit the Cathedral Square with its ensemble of old churches. Their interior is truly amazing with painted icons and graves of famous Russian rulers (in the Archangel Cathedral) – as Ivan the Terrible, for example. You can climb Ivan the Great Bell Tower to see the square from above. Then there is the Armoury Chamber with its huge collection of royal regalia and gifts and everyday objects and the Diamond fund with, well, diamonds and other jewelry.

How to spend a perfect day in Moscow | Cathedral Square in the Kremlin

2. The Mausoleum . Frankly, despite visiting Moscow so many times, I have never been to the Mausoleum. Somehow, the thought of seeing Lenin doesn’t seem appealing to me, but, maybe, you want it. The entrance is free, at least.

3. The Red Square is the first place where every tourist goes. It is the center, the heart of Moscow and many tourist attractions are located there.

4. GUM is a huge shopping center on the Red Square. It is quite expensive, so not so many people go there for shopping. Still, it is a fancy place. In addition, there is a huge supermarket there and the famous canteen Stolovaya 57, so go there for a quick lunch.

5. Kilometer Zero of Moscow is at the Resurrection (Voskresensky) Gates at the Red Square. It symbolises the beginning of all roads in Russia. It is a square with a circle in the center: the edges have depictions of animals.

6. Aleksandrovsky Garden is at the Kremlin walls. It has amazing flower beds, fountains with fairytale sculptures, and there are lots of benches to rest your feet. The garden is famous for the monuments of the wars in 1812 and 1941-1945. And the eternal flame is here.

7. St Basil’s Cathedral is the most famous one in Moscow. Its colourful onion domes are easily noticed from afar. Ivan the Terrible ordered its construction to commemorate the capture of two cities, Kazan and Astrakhan. Now it is a symbol of Russia alongside other notable monuments.

Architectural gems of Moscow, Russia | St Basils Cathedral in the Red Square

8. Kazan Cathedral is another church on the Red Square. It’s not as lavishly decorated as St Basil’s, but it is a functioning church, so everyone can go inside. It’s not the original church, but a reconstruction: the original one was destroyed by Stalin’s order.

9. Change of guards happens every hour at the eternal flame in Aleksandrovsky Garden. It is quite a show with soldiers marching and music playing and many tourists gather at the spot to see it.

10. Monument to Vladimir the Great is a recent addition to the list of tourist attractions of Moscow: it was mounted in 2016. Vladimir the Great is one of the greatest rulers of Kievan Rus. The monument is 17,5 meters high and is located close to the Kremlin.

Parks and gardens

11. Zaryadye is not far from the Kremlin on the historical Varvarka Street. In addition to being a park, its floating bridge offers spectacular views of the Kremlin, the Moskva River, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and one of Stalin’s skyscrapers.

Zaryadye Park in Moscow

12. Gorky Park : shadowy alleys with benches to rest, fountains with music, a roller-skating rink, a pond with boats: Gorky park has everything! You can rent bicycles, skateboards, rollers, boats, and have some fun!

13. Sokolniki Park is huge and has numerous activities on offer like skateboarding, roller-skating, bicycles, ping-pong tables, a swimming pool, etc. Sometimes concerts and performances are held there.

14. Museon is next to Gorky Park and is famous for its weird sculptures and statues of Soviet rulers.

15. Aptekarsky Ogorod or the Apothecary Garden is the most famous garden in Moscow. It was founded by Peter the Great as a place to grow medicinal herbs, but expanded its collection of plants greatly.

Moscow pictures: stunning photos of Moscow | Aptekarsky ogorod garden

16. Ermitazh Garden is one of the most beloved in Moscow. It was opened in 1894 and offered open-air concerts. Today performances and art exhibitions are held in the park. There are a couple of theaters in the territory and classes for kids.

17. Yekaterininsky Park is a monument to garden art. It has amazing flower beds and a huge pond with boats for rent. There are designated places for doing sports and a covered stage for live performances.

18. Patriarch’s Ponds are surrounded by trees today, but about 300 years ago it was a marshy place. At the end of the 17th century these marshes were dried and three ponds were dug. Later two of the ponds were filled up and trees were planted around the remaining one. The ponds became famous because namely here Mikhail Bulgakov’s masterpiece ‘The Master and Margarita’ starts.

19. Ostankino Park is now a part of VDNKh. It is huge and has plenty of facilities like bicycle tracks, paths for horse riding, open-air gyms, and the biggest open-air skatepark in Europe. Naturally, locals love it and it’s always full of people.

20. Clean Ponds : in the 17th century the place was called ‘Filthy marshes’ or ‘pagan marshes’ (depends on the interpretation). Later it was cleaned and nowadays it is a long pond which turns into a skate-rink in winter. Quite often artists put their paintings alongside the pond for passers-by to see. And there is an amazing song by famous I. Talkov about the place.

Did you know that there are more than 400 museums in Moscow? Of course, you can’t visit them all, so here I have a list of the most well-known and beloved ones in the city.

21. Tretyakov Gallery has several buildings, one of them dedicated to the 20th century art of Russia and the Soviet Union, and the other one to the Russian art at much earlier period till the 19th century. The latter one exhibits Vasnetsov’s, Shiskin’s, Serov’s, Ayvazovsky’s masterpieces. The vaults of the museum house a huge collection of old icons, the majority from the 14th century.

22. State Historical Museum : the dark red building of the museum on the Red Square is hard to miss. It houses huge collections of gold artifacts, manuscripts, jewelry, ceramics, old books, religious paintings, historical costumes, etc. Its coin collection has more than 1,7 million units!

23. Just like Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is the right place for art lovers. There are about 700,000 exhibits in the museum collection, including masterpieces of Matisse, Renoir, Picasso, Degas, Rubens, etc. It includes a huge collection of sculptures and archeological objects.

24. The Archaeological Museum of Moscow is an underground museum and is dedicated to the archeological diggings in the city. There are about 2,000 exhibits from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages.

25. Moscow Museum of Modern Art . It is the project of the famous Zurab Tsereteli and his private collection is the core of the museum. There are numerous paintings and sculptures by the artists of the 20th century, including those of Picasso, Dali and Miro.

26. State Darwin Museum . This huge museum houses a collection of 400,000 exhibits, mostly stuffed animals. From what I have seen kids enjoy it immensely.

27. The Orlov Museum of Paleontology : as the name suggests, it houses everything related to paleontology. There are more than 5,000 exhibits from the Precambrian, Palaeozoic, Mezozoic and Caenozoic ages: ammonites, reptiles, skeletons of dinosaurs, etc.

28. The Museum of Cosmonautics is not far from the VDNKh and its collection includes technical devices, documents, personal belongings of cosmonauts, pictures, paintings, stamps, coins, etc.

29. The State Museum of Oriental Art was founded in 1918 to preserve the cultural heritage of the Eastern republics of the Soviet Union. Now it houses huge collections of Japanese, Korean, Arabian, Indian art in addition to those of the Soviet republics. In 2017 the famous Russian painter Nicholas Roerich’s collection was handed over to the museum.

30. Bulgakov Museum : the museum is dedicated to the famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov, the author of ‘The Master and Margarita’. It includes about 3,000 exhibits: letters, documents, pictures, furniture and personal belongings.

31. Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines : do you want to play an old Soviet arcade game? Just go to this museum! At the entrance you buy coins/tokens that you can use to play on any machine inside the museum.

32. Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Hill is dedicated to soldiers who fought and fell during the war of 1941-1945. It has several thematic halls, panoramas and a memory book.

33. Military exhibition on Poklonnaya Hill : this is another museum on Poklonnaya Hill and has a huge collection of military equipment, including tanks, planes, artillery, etc.

34. Museum-panorama “Battle of Borodino” : this museum is dedicated to one of the most famous battles of 1812 during the war between the Russian Empire and France. It is interesting that both sides claimed later that they won this battle.

Other places

35. Varvarka Street : there are some magnificent churches on the street and some historical buildings like the Old English Court, the oldest office of another country in Moscow, and the Chambers of the Romanov Boyars exhibiting the residential and household interior of the 16th-17th centuries.

A church in Varvarka Street in Moscow

36. VDNKh or the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy or All-Russian Exhibition Center is one of the most popular places in Moscow. It was built in the 1930-ies to showcase the achievements of the Soviet Union in the field of agriculture. Every building has its own style and was to either represent a Soviet republic or house a specific collection. The highlight is the fountains with famous sculptures like the Friendship of Peoples and the Stone Flower on the central alley. And, I guess, everyone is excited to see the replica of the famous Vostok rocket.

The fountain Friendship of Peoples in VDNKH in Moscow

37. Moscow Planetarium is the oldest one in Russia. It houses multiple exhibits and replicas, but my favorite parts are the hall with a huge dome for watching movies and the exhibits on the roof.

38. Poklonnaya Hill : its name can be translated as bow-down hill and the monuments and park on it are dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). Wait here until it gets dark: the fountains and columns get illuminated with red color, which is a magnificent sight.

39. Monument to Peter I on the Moskva River designed by the famous Zurab Tsereteli is 98 meters high. It is quite noticeable, but while it looks imposing, not everyone likes it. They even wanted to dismantle it and move it to another place, but it proved to be too expensive. By the way, this monument was in the top 10 of the ugliest ones in the world according to Virtual Tourist platform.

40. Krutitskoye Podvorye . This is the place where the spirit of olden times still lives: the buildings are old, it is quiet and cosy here. This courtyard belonged to Krutitsky Metropolitans, and a couple of churches from the 17th century are preserved along with palaces and houses.

In Krutitskoye Courtyard in Moscow

41. Izmaylovsky Kremlin . You just have to see the colorful buildings, which replicate terems, houses in the traditional Russian architectural style. The Kremlin is packed with museums, there are several places to eat, so you won’t starve there. The biggest part of the Kremlin is a flea market with dozens of stalls with souvenirs, matreshkas, coins, boxes with traditional ornaments, furs, paintings, clocks, amber, shawls, clothes, books, icons, Soviet times items.

Travelling around Russia: Architectural gems of Moscow

42. Stalin’s Bunker in Izmaylovo was built in the 1930-ies. There is a 17 kilometer long underground road that leads from the bunker to the center of Moscow. There is another bunker in Taganka.

43. Bolshoi Theater is one of the most well-known opera and ballet theaters in the world. It’s located not far from the Red Square, so just take some time to see it. If you are lucky to get tickets, lucky, because you should buy them long in advance, then you will see some of the best performances.

44. Metro tour . Moscow metro is one of the most beautiful in the world, it’s a fact. You can see everything here: stucco, paintings, sculptures, chandeliers, gilded walls, vibrant colours… some stations are true masterpieces! Pay a visit to Mayakovskaya, Kievskaya, Novoperedelkino, Komsomolskaya, Rasskazovka, Elektrozavodskaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square), Novoslobodskaya, Novokuznetskaya, Arbatskaya, etc.

45. Trubnaya Square/Tsvetnoy Boulevard is a magnificent place! Just make sure you go there in summer when everything is green and flowers are blooming. The boulevard is famous for Nikulin’s Circus. I have not been to the circus, so I like the boulevard for its park with circus-related sculptures and arches with blooming flowers and the views from the nearby Trubnaya square.

46. Strastnoy Boulevard is one of the most important streets in Moscow. It is a nice area with an alley and monuments. And there are many notable buildings along the boulevard.

47. Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow: it starts at Smolenskaya metro station and runs almost till the Red Square. Arbat is full of fancy buildings and restaurants.

48. Alley of the rulers of Russia  is a place to see all the rulers at once. It is a small exhibition of busts hidden from the eyes of tourists. When I was there, I saw only three other people around. This is the place to see Ivan the Terrible, Alexander Nevsky, emperors from the Romanov family, Lenin and Yeltsin.

49. Triumphal Arch at Poklonnaya Hill was erected in the 1830-ies to commemorate the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812.

50. Moscow Mosque . The first mosque was built in 1904, but in 2011 it was demolished to erect a new one. Now it is a huge building with vibrant colors and minarets of different sizes. By the way, they used 12 kilograms of leaf-gold to decorate the dome and minarets.

51. In Russia there were many merchant courts ( gostinyy dvor in Russian), where people used to sell their goods. The one in Moscow was built in the 17th century, but it suffered a lot during the years, especially during the siege of Moscow in 1812. Now the building doesn’t house shops anymore, it is used for exhibitions.

52. Eliseyevskiy Supermarket isn’t a simple supermarket, it’s an experience. The interior is amazing, with intricate decoration, columns, chandeliers. Some people visit it like a museum. There are rumours that they want to close the supermarket, because it’s unclear who the actual building belongs to.

53. The teahouse on Myasnitskaya Street is a special building as well. It is easily recognisable thanks to the pseudo-Chinese decorative elements on its facade. At the beginning of the 20th century it was a tea shop and had apartments for rent. Now the first floor is a shop and they still sell tea there.

54. Bogdan Khmelnitsky (Kievsky) Pedestrian Bridge : this pedestrian glass-covered bridge offers stunning views of Moscow. And, naturally, it is more beautiful at night, when the lights are on.

55. Zhivopisny Bridge : this bridge is famous for its bright red arch, which is very photogenic at night.

Panoramic decks

56. Sparrow Hills : this panoramic deck is right in front of the Moscow State University building. From here visitors can see the famous Luzhniki Stadium, Stalin’s skyscrapers, Moscow-City, etc. Getting there requires a bit of effort: first you have to get to Vorobyovy Gory metro station which is under the bridge and then follow a path up the hill. Frankly, it is better to follow the crowd after exiting the station.

57. Deck at the Academy of Sciences is closer to the city center and offers views of Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow-City, the Kremlin, the statue to Peter I, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Frankly, this view is much better than the one from Sparrow Hills. Getting here is easier: just get to Leninsky Prospect metro station and follow a straight road to the deck.

58. Moscow City is a group of skyscrapers at the riverfront. Every skyscraper is built in its own fashion and has a name. Many of them are higher than 330 meters! The highest one is Vostok Federation Tower: it is 374 meters high! The 360 panoramic deck in the above-mentioned Federation Tower offers stunning views of Moscow.

59. Ostankino Tower : this place offers the farthest view of Moscow and it is not a wonder: the panoramic deck is at about 330 meters height. Personally, I prefer the other three decks, as this one is quite far from the city center.

Estates and mansions

As you probably know, Peter the Great moved the capital from Moscow to St Petersburg in 1712, so, naturally, many noble families built estates in the new capital, and the royals erected palaces there. Still, there are some in Moscow, and you should definitely see them.

NB: I have another post on some of the residences below with more information: click here to read it.

60. Kolomenskoye : before Peter I moved the capital from Moscow to St Petersburg, Kolomenskoye was the main royal residence. Michael I Romanov loved the place, but it was his son Alexis I the Quietest who built a magnificent wooden palace. While almost all the buildings in the area were erected in the 16th-18th centuries, the wooden palace is not the original one: Catherine the Great ordered its demolition to build another palace. The one visitors see now is an exact modern replica built between 2008-2010. However, the majority of the objects inside the palace are authentic.

Kolomenskoye Palace in Moscow

61. Izmaylovo under the Romanovs started as a farm and a production unit and included glass and brick plants, bee garden, linen manufacture, livestock, etc. In addition, they built churches, towers and a wooden palace. According to some historians Peter the Great was born in Izmaylovo. Anna of Russia opened a zoo there, the biggest one in the empire, and tigers and lions lived there. During the reign of Catherine the Great many buildings were demolished, and many years after that Nicholas I ordered to build an asylum for the military. Some of the gates, churches and the asylum can still be seen today. Izmaylovo estate is close to the Izmaylovsky Kremlin I mentioned above.

62. Tsarytsyno is strongly associated with Catherine the Great. Though St Petersburg was the capital of the country during her reign, Catherine the Great bought Black Mud manor, renamed it into Tsaritsyno (tsaritsa is czarina is Russian) and ordered the construction of a huge complex. She died before the construction finished, and her son wasn’t interested in the project.

63. Liublino is located quite far from the center of Moscow. In 1800 a rich merchant Nikolay Durasov bought the place and built a palace in the form of a cross. It is luxurious, with exquisite furniture, silky drapes, columns, but what makes it special is its decoration. Nicholas Durasov adored theater so he decorated his home with scenes from ancient mythology. Just lift your head up, look at the ceilings and walls and you will see the muses, Apollo, Cupid, Gratiae…

64. Kuskovo Manor was a summer residence of the Sheremetev family, one of the wealthiest in the Russian Empire. There are many buildings in the complex, including the palace itself, kitchens, the Dutch house, the Grotto with naval decorative elements, the Italian house with some exhibits and the Great Stone Orangery. The main palace is built right in front of a pond. The decoration is rich, with tapestries, colorful fabric wallpaper, chandeliers, furniture. One of the most beautiful parts of the palace is the Mirror Hall.

65. Vorontsovo estate belonged to many people, including Ivan the Terrible. The place was first mentioned in the 14th century and since then changed owners frequently, until it was gifted to N. Repnin in the 17th century: he and his heirs erected the main buildings of the estate. At the beginning of the 19th century the place was rented out as summer residences and one of the tenants planned to build a dirigible there, but it didn’t work out. During the Soviet period it served as a collective farm, prison, then a scientific institute. Many buildings were either destroyed or reorganized, so not much is left of the original estate. Nowadays Vorontsovo is more of a park with different facilities, but some buildings are still there to see like the entrance gates, service premises and the church.

66. Kuzminki-Blachernae was a huge residence that belonged to Golitsyns, one of the most prominent noble families in the Russian Empire. The complex included numerous buildings, but at the moment almost all of them are in decay. The main palace burnt down in 1916, and after the revolution they gave the estate to the Institute of Experimental Veterinary. Many buildings were converted into laboratories and administrative premises, but the place is abandoned now, except one building that houses a museum.

Monasteries

Monasteries in Russia weren’t only places for religious ceremonies and monastic life. No, many of them were built to serve as fortifications to defend the city, and sometimes the defenders would find shelter behind its walls. That’s why don’t be surprised when you see thick walls: if it weren’t for church domes, one would think that it is a proper fortress. All the monasteries and convents were extremely important and the rulers of the country would usually donate money to build additional premises and decorate the churches.

The ones I mention below are very old. Some of them were used as prisons for the members of the royal family, some served as shelters during wars, others had facilities to care for the wounded, but many of them were located outside the city walls and served as a barrier: during attacks they would take the first blow giving Moscow time to prepare. Nevertheless, when the Soviet rule came, they all shared a similar fate.

67. Novodevichy Convent is the most famous one in Moscow. It was founded in 1524 and the buildings are still preserved. Many noble women took monastic vows and ended up living in the convent, some were forced to do it. During troublesome times, the royals hid there. The monastery was rich: for example, at the beginning of the 18th century 15,000 serfs belonged to the convent. Its cemetery is well-known as well, some notable people are buried there, so many people visit it just to see the graves. The convent was declared a UNESCO site.

68. Novospassky Monastery was founded in 1490, but became popular after the Romanovs came to power as it was their family burial vault. Before Peter I moved to St Petersburg, it was a burial place for many noble families like Naryshkins, Sheremetevs, Trubetskoys, etc., but during the Soviet times many graves were brought to ruin or moved to other places. The monastery was turned into a prison, and later was given to the NKVD.

69. Donskoy Monastery : this red-walled monastery was founded in 1591 after the victory over a Crimean khan, but many buildings were added later by tsars and noble people. During the siege of Moscow in 1812 soldiers were stationed there and they ruined the monastery and stole many valuables. Many famous people are buried in its territory, including Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. When the Soviets came to power, they turned it into a museum.

70. Conception Convent or Zachatyevsky Monastery: the fate of this monastery wasn’t easy. It was founded in the 1360-ies, but its main cathedral was built at the end of the 17th century. This very cathedral was later destroyed to erect a neo-gothic one. During the Soviet times it was turned into a prison, the cathedral and other premises were demolished, so after the collapse of the USSR they had to build a new one. Now the main church of the monastery, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God, is a recent addition.

71. Vysokopetrovsky Monastery is hidden behind walls and few people, even fewer tourists, know of its existence. Founded in 1315 by Metropolitan Archbishop Peter, its first churches were wooden, the stone ones were built later. In 1812 the French ransacked the monastery, they passed death sentences here and buried people at the bell tower. In the 1920-ies monks organised a backstreet monastic community here, but some of its members were later executed. The Soviets opened a library, a plant and shared flats in the monastery. It would be fair to say that restoration works started during the Soviet rule.

72. Andreevsky Monastery : the fate of this monastery is weird, frankly. It was founded in the 17th century, but there weren’t many monks there. In 1724 Peter I ordered to move the monks to Donskoy Monastery, and turn Andreevsky one into an orphanage and prison. Later it became a home for the insane and an asylum. In the meantime, some churches of the monastery were still active, and in 1991 it became a fully functioning monastery when all its churches opened.

73. Danilov Monastery : the monastery got its name because its founder was Daniel of Moscow, one of Alexander Nevsky’s sons. It was founded in 1282, but shortly after that it was moved to another place. Ivan the Terrible gave the place a new life and ordered to build a new church close to Daniel’s grave. Because the monastery was at the epicenter of many battles, it was ransacked often. During the Soviet times it was turned into a warehouse and Charles Crane, an American businessman, bought its bells and took them to Harvard University, but they were returned in 2008.

74. Sretensky Monastery was founded in 1395. Initially, there was only a church, but, according to a legend, an icon from the church helped to avoid the invasion of khan Tamerlane, so the ruler of the country ordered to build a monastery around it. It was enlarged during the next centuries, but in the 18th century it lost its significance and fell to decay, but the situation changed in the middle of the 19th century when the area was renovated. By the end of the 19th century it was the most famous monastery in Moscow. During the Soviet times some of its premises were demolished, icons were handed over to museums, and the rest of buildings were given to the NKVD. A new cathedral was built in the 21st century, but to do it they had to demolish some of the remaining buildings.

75. Ivanovsky Convent : it was founded as a friary, but was later turned into a convent. It served as a kind of prison as well for royal wives. When the capital was moved to St Petersburg, the convent fell into neglect, in 1812 it was burned and restored in 1865 only. Soldiers wounded during Russo-Turkish war would be sent to the convent. During the Soviet times it was given first to the NKVD and turned into a concentration camp, and later to the Department of Internal Affairs. Even nowadays, when many buildings are restored and religious services are held, some of the premises still belong to the department.

76. Simonov Monastery was named after boyar Stepan Khovrin, who donated lands to start it. He later became a monk and took Simon as his monastic name. Just like in the case of the monasteries above, the new buildings were added gradually, and the monastery was quite rich: at the end of the 17th century about 25,000 serfs belonged to it. During the reign of Catherine the Great it was turned into a sickbay, but the place was later restored. During the Soviet times many buildings were blown up to build a Hall of Culture.

Personally, I am a big fan of the Slavic church architecture. The churches are so vibrant, have intricate decorative elements, and just please the eye. Whenever I go to a Russian city, I dedicate some time to exploring churches. If you aren’t like me, just skip this section, but, maybe, a couple of pictures will change your mind 😊

77. Cathedral of Christ the Saviour : this is the main cathedral in Moscow, and you definitely have to see it. Its white walls and golden domes are seen from afar, inside it’s vibrant and bright. For a price you can climb up to its dome. In addition, get to the bridge nearby: the views of Moscow are stunning!

78. St Clement’s Church : this red and white church with blue and golden domes is located at Tretyakovskaya metro station relatively close to Tretyakov Gallery, so you might as well spend some time to admire its colors. It is built in Baroque style, which is unusual for Moscow, and is dedicated to Clement, a Roman pope, which is surprising as well.

Architectural gems of Moscow, Russia | St Clement's Church

79. Cathedral of St Nicholas in Klenniki is relatively close to the Kremlin, but if you are not in the area, there is no need to go to specifically see it. My hotel (I loved it, by the way), was nearby, and I passed by the church a couple of times a day. The church was built in 1657, but was damaged a lot in fires, so was constantly restored and renovated.

80. Temple of the Holy Trinity in Ostankino : this one you should definitely see! It is not far from the Ostankino Tower and VNDKh, so you can easily do it. The church was built at the end of the 17th century, and its distinctive feature is its decorative elements. It’s a monument of old Russian cult architecture.

Church of the Holy Trinity in Ostankino in Moscow

81. All Saints Church in Kulishki : this one is really close to Zaryadye Park, so you can walk another 200 meters to see it. Its architecture is quite interesting as well, when you look at the windows, you can easily recognize old Russian style. When the Soviets came to power, they wanted to demolish the church, but used it for state security needs.

82. Resurrection Church in Kadashi Sloboda : this is another church not far from Tretyakov Gallery. It has peculiar architecture, and some parts of its facade are different from the other churches. It was ransacked in 1812, and during the Soviet times it housed the archive of the KGB. But today, after being restored, the golden domes of this red- and orange-walled church are seen from afar.

83. The Church of St. Vladimir in the Old Gardens : if you come to visit Ivanovsky Convent, this church will be across the road. The original church was built in 1516, but was rebuilt in the 17th century and lost almost all of its original elements. In 1980 a fire destroyed the books and frescoes and it was restored later. Today it is hard to miss this church with white walls.

84. The Church of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple in Barashi isn’t far from the Clean Ponds I mentioned above. It was built in Naryshkin’s baroque style in the 17th century and was richly decorated. During the Soviet times they handed the most previous icons over to Tretyakov Gallery and wanted to demolish it, but changed their mind and turned it into an electrical goods plant.

85. The Church of Deposition of the Robe on Donskoy : this church is close to Donskoy Monastery and Gorky Park, so you can as well go to see it. The stone church in Moscow baroque style was built in 1680 and was restored at the end of the 19th century. Interestingly, it didn’t close during the Soviet rule.

Moscow, Russia | Church Deposition of the Robe on Donskoy

86. The Church of the Epiphany in Elokhovo : this one is quite far from any other Moscow landmarks, so it is unlikely you will go to see it 🙂 Unlike the churches I mentioned above, the walls of this one aren’t red, but light blue. It is said that Alexander Pushkin was baptised there.

Amazing buildings in Moscow

If you are into architecture or old Russian architectural style, you can spend some time looking for these buildings. Unfortunately, they can be enjoyed from the outside only (as far as I know, but I may be wrong), but if you are not far from them, why not have a look? 😊

87. House of Pashkov : it will be really hard to miss this white colossus not far from the Kremlin and the monument to Vladimir. It was built at the end of the 18th century and was later turned into a university. Now it houses the Russian State Library and it is possible to visit it during a tour : it is expensive and it looks like they accept groups only.

Pashkov House in Moscow

88. Egg house on Mashkov Street : this truly weird building looks like … an egg and was inspired by Faberge eggs. It was built in 2000-2002, so it is a relatively new addition to the architectural masterpieces of the city. Because it is weird, many people don’t like it and criticize the architect. And, frankly, it looks totally out of place. Nobody lives there: as the architect himself claims, the house isn’t very comfortable. If you have about 409 million rubles, you can buy it 😊

89. Arseny Morozov Mansion : the first owner of the building Arseny Morozov was inspired by Pena Palace in Sintra. Some say that Casa de las Conchas from Salamanca served as an inspiration as well, because there are shells on its façade. In any case, you won’t miss this snow-white building on Vozdvizhenka Street. By the way, the building was so weird for its times, that it was called ‘a fool’s house’. I think it is amazing!

Architectural gems of Moscow, Russia | Arseny Morozov's Mansion on Vozdvizhenka

90. Apraksins-Trubetskoys House at the Clean Ponds: the first owner of the baroque building was Count Apraksin, but it was later sold to the Trubetskoy family, hence the name of the mansion. In 1861 it became a school where some famous people like C. Stanislavsky studied. During the Soviet period the mansion was turned into an apartment building and then into a student dormitory. Now it could use some kind of renovation.

91. Volkov-Yusupov Chambers : unfortunately, this amazing building in Bol’shoy Khariton’yevskiy Pereulok (relatively close to the Egg house) isn’t open to the public, so you can see its façade only. It was turned into a museum for a couple of years, so it was possible to see its lavish interior, but not anymore. Now this building with red walls is hidden behind a neglected garden.

92. Stalin’s Seven Sisters or skyscrapers are 7 buildings commissioned by Stalin. There should have been 8 of them, but they didn’t finish the last one. These monumental buildings are a representation of the so-called Stalinist empire architectural style and are easily recognizable as they are so different from the surrounding cityscape. Sparrow Hills are a nice place to see them: actually, one of these skyscrapers, the building of Moscow State University, will be behind you 🙂 Another one you will see from the bridge in Zaryadye Park.

93. Averky Kirillov Chambers : if you come to see the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, just cross the Patriarshy Bridge and turn left. After about a hundred meters you will see an old house with red walls which can easily go unnoticed because of the huge buildings nearby. It belonged to Averky Kirillov, a notable merchant and state official. Built in the middle of the 17th century, it boasted exquisite decoration, but time and new owners didn’t spare it. It housed the Russian Institute of Culturology, but I am not sure what is there now.

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.
