Walk the Camino de Santiago

I enjoyed the experience because I had researched the walk and had prior knowledge of what to expect however I think the tour guide could have enhanced the experience by providing more information about the places we were walking through - he did at times appear disinterested. I was very disappointed in the response from TourRadar regarding my query on travel insurance given the situation with the issues with air traffic control and the cancellation of multiple flights back to the UK.

Our trip on the Camino De Santiago was great! And a good value too. Our Guide David did a wonderful job by providing details and pointing out unique features along the Camino. David was very responsive to individual requests for assistance with little problems that pop up. David was very knowledgeable about local foods and special dishes and very helpful to those with special dietary needs. Everyone in our group enjoyed their journey on the Camino. Thank you Tour Radar and Thank you David. John Outfleet

Camino - Leon to Santiago Tour

Camino - Leon to Santiago

I walked the Camino de Santiago from Leon to Santiago and it was amongst the most memorable travel experiences of my life. Lovely hotel accommodations, friendly staff and some of the most beautiful scenery that Spain has to offer made this truly special. For anyone who enjoys serious walks this should be on your short-list. I would absolutely look forward to doing it again.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago Tour

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago

We have just completed cycling the Camino de Santiago (Roncesvalles to Santiago) with "ExperiencePlus!" bike tours. It was truly memorable experience. Our guides brought a myriad of talents, language skills and good humour to our trip. The "plus" was, in large part, the cultural component. Thanks to the knowledge of our guides and their eagerness to share their love of the Camino, we gained an appreciation of the history of the route and the pilgrims (past and present) who have made the journey. On a practical note, the accommodation was the best available - keeping in mind that this is a 'pilgrim's route. This comment is not meant as a negative . All of the accommodation provided a welcome respite after a long day of cycling. The food and wine (chosen by our guides) were wonderful and a provided delightful introduction to the cuisine of northern Spain. On a more practical note, the bicycles and van support (including water and snacks en route) were excellent. The guides went "above and beyond" to ensure that we had no difficulty in moving forward! The "chalk arrows" were an added bonus - all we had to do was concentrate on cycling and the breathtaking scenery. This was our sixth trip with ExperiencePlus!. We are looking forward to our seventh.

Best of the Spanish Camino Tour

Best of the Spanish Camino

Great tour, excellent support. Fantastic tour leader and driver (Emilio) - very attentive to individual needs and both went beyond the call of duty to assist people in need. The itinerary allowed you to get a real feel for the Camino, without having to walk tedious distances through boring exposed countryside or industrial areas on the outskirts of towns. Accommodation was also varied, from 4 star in larger towns, to no star in a rural setting (but the views and atmosphere were sufficient to outweigh any perceived disadvantage and the room had all basic facilities, whilst the food was terrific). I don't know why the hotel in Santiago only has 2 stars: there may have been only basic body gel and shampoo, but the rooms were very spacious, it had a 24/7 dining area where you could get tea/coffee/juice/water and fruit, or make a sandwich, which was fantastic for early departures or just after a long day. The staff on reception were also very helpful.

What people love about camino de santiago tours.

Our guide got us safely to Santiago which was a big part of his job. We had a nice group of people on our tour. The leader had good recommendations for restaurants and city tours. However, the guide was very impatient with me when my backpack was missing, and I only found my pack due to my air tags. Gadventures was responsible for moving my pack during the day so I am not sure about the reason for the impatience.

What is the Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago, or “the Way of St James,” is one of Europe's oldest and most iconic pilgrimages.

Thousands of pilgrims walk to the Cathedral of Santiago Compostela in Galicia, Spain, every year.

The cathedral is purportedly where the tomb of St James (one of Jesus’s 12 apostles) is located. It has been one of the most spiritually significant places for Christians since the 10th century.

Walking the Camino is a personally enriching experience, no matter your beliefs, as it uniquely brings people from diverse backgrounds together.

What are the different Camino de Santiago routes?

Back in the Middle Ages, thousands of pilgrims walked to the holy site of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia from all over Europe and we have them to thank for the many Camino routes across Spain, Portugal and France today.

Each route is beautiful in its own way ranging from idyllic rural Spanish countryside to the wind-swept Portuguese coast.

The most popular Camino walking routes are:

Camino Frances: 480 mi (772 km)

Camino Portugues: 380 mi (610 km)

Camino del Norte: 514 mi (827 km)

Camino Primitivo: 199 mi (321 km)

Camino Ingles: 74 mi (119 km)

Camino Finisterre: 155 mi (90 km)

When is the best time of year to walk the Camino?

Most Camino routes are in mild oceanic or Mediterranean climate zones with warm summers and mild winters so that you can do it comfortably anytime.

The best time of year to walk the Camino depends on what you want to gain from the trip.

The summer months (June through September) are the busiest. While the weather is reliably warm and sunny, the routes are highly trafficked and might not be the best option if you want solitude.

If you don’t cope well in the heat, spring and autumn may be better options – it’s also quieter at this time of year.

December through February are the coolest and wettest months. Still, the routes are super quiet, peaceful and arguably more comfortable to hike without the summer sun beaming down on you.

How long is the Camino de Santiago?

You don't need to commit to that distance, though.

To get the Compostela (the official Certificate of completion for the Camino de Santiago), you only need to walk the last 62 miles (100km) to Santiago on any of the Camino trails.

What do I take on Camino de Santiago?

On a guided Camino de Santiago walk, your main luggage will be transported to each place you stay, so the good news is you don't have to lug it around with you!

For clothing items, you'll need comfortable and lightweight activewear. This includes leggings, vests, t-shirts and shorts.

You should also bring a light jumper to pop on in the evening if the temperature drops and a wind-proof jacket if you're visiting in the cooler months.

You'll also need a comfy pair of hiking boots (make sure they've been broken in), several pairs of hiking socks, and a pole.

Lastly, remember to use a small day bag to carry essentials like a reusable water bottle, a change of clothes, ID and snacks.

Can you do the Camino de Santiago alone?

Most of the Camino walking trails are well-signed, and it's easy and safe enough to walk without a guide.

Although you could book accommodation, organize luggage transfers and do the walk alone, you might not get to experience the benefits of connecting with other like-minded travelers like you do in a group setting. You'll also miss out on the guidance and inside knowledge of your local leader, who'll be by your side, sharing stories, history and banter along the way.

The journey is long and bound to challenge you – whether physically, mentally or emotionally – but if you do a guided walk, your leader and group will support you, and vice versa. Compared to a self-guided Camino walk, everything is taken care of, so you can focus on immersing yourself in the gorgeous scenery, eating delicious food, getting to know others, reconnecting with yourself, or whatever inspired you to embark on this journey. You can also access immediate assistance if you twist your ankle, get sick or experience any emergency.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Camino de Santiago Routes

Camino Routes

The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is a collection of  ancient pilgrimage routes , all leading to the Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This network, with a history spanning over a thousand years, begins from various starting points including  France, Portugal, and Spain , crossing through diverse landscapes and culturally rich cities.

At its heart lies the story of  Saint James , an apostle whose relics rest in the iconic  Santiago de Compostela Cathedral . Today, marked by the symbolic scallop shell, the Camino weaves through historic towns and scenic countryside, offering a unique journey of spiritual and personal discovery.

For a more in-depth overview of Camino de Santiago and its cultural and religious significance, follow the link to our  comprehensive guide about Camino de Santiago .

1.  Camino Frances

The Camino Frances, or the French Way, is the  most popular route  of the Camino de Santiago, beginning in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France and culminating in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Tracing its origins to 1135, this path weaves through significant cities like Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, and León.

2.  Camino Portugues (Coastal)

Camino Portugues starts in Portugal, with  two main paths : the traditional Central Way (from Lisbon) and the scenic Coastal Way (from Porto). The Central Way traverses three Portuguese districts and two Galician provinces, while the Coastal Way offers a picturesque journey along Portugal’s north coast and traditional fishing villages. It is the second most popular route to Santiago.

3.  Camino del Norte

The Camino del Norte, or Northern Way, is one of the oldest routes to Santiago de Compostela, dating back to the 9th century. Initially a safer alternative to the Moorish-threatened French Way, it runs from Irun through the scenic  northern coast of Spain , passing through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. It is known for its breathtaking coastal views, vibrant fishing villages, and rugged terrain.

4.  Camino Primitivo

The Camino Primitivo is the  original Camino de Santiago route , starting from Oviedo and spanning approximately 320 km to Santiago de Compostela. Historically significant as the path first taken by King Alfonso II of Asturias in 814, it offers a less traveled, more challenging alternative to the Camino Francés with its rigorous hilly terrain.

5.  Camino Finisterre

The Camino Finisterre is an  extension of Camino de Santiago , a 90 km journey from Santiago de Compostela to Cape Finisterre, once believed to be the “end of the world.” This short trek through Galicia’s rugged countryside, steeped in Celtic heritage, also includes an optional extension to Muxía. It’s a less-traveled path, inviting pilgrims to explore the scenic Atlantic coastline of Spain.

6.  Camino Ingles

The Camino Inglés,  mainly used by British pilgrims , spans 119 km from Ferrol or A Coruña to Santiago. This route, mainly through Galicia, offers a blend of rural beauty, passing through dense forests and countryside, and is enriched with historical landmarks. Ideal for first-time pilgrims, it’s one of the shortest yet culturally significant routes of the Camino de Santiago.

7. Le Puy Camino

The Le Puy Camino, or Via Podiensis, spans around 750 km from Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Jean Pied de Port in France. This 4-5 week journey traverses the volcanic Velay region and Pyrenees foothills. Marked as part of the GR65 with its distinctive red and white balises, its entirety  runs across France  before it converges with Camino Frances below the Pyrenees.

8. Via de la Plata

The Via de la Plata is a challenging and historic route spanning over 1000 km from Seville to Astorga across six Spanish provinces. Consisting of 38 stages, this  longest Camino route  traces its origins to Roman roads. With long days, sparse facilities, and typically hot summer weather, it’s mostly undertaken by experienced pilgrims seeking an authentic and rigorous journey.

Why travel with Camino de Santiago Tours?

Hassle-free, book with confidence, tried & tested adventures, unbeatable support, things to know.

Absolutely, many people embark on the Camino as solo travelers. There is a unique appeal in starting the Camino alone, as the journey’s nature often leads to forming new friendships with other pilgrims along the way. Walking alone offers flexibility and freedom in your schedule, allowing you to start and stop as you please and bond with a diverse range of people. Additionally, many find that starting the journey alone enhances the personal and spiritual aspects of the Camino experience.

The ideal times for walking the Camino are April/May, when spring flowers are in bloom, and September/October, known for their pleasant colors. The summer months (June, July, August) can be quite hot, which may be challenging for those unaccustomed to walking in high temperatures. Conversely, winter months see a significant drop in temperatures and some accommodations may close for the season.

The Camino routes, particularly the Camino Francés, Le Puy, and Camino Portugués, are well-marked and easy to navigate. The paths are marked with two main symbols: a yellow arrow or a seashell. These symbols guide you through every turn and twist of the path, making it straightforward to follow the routes. This excellent waymarking means that even those who are not experienced hikers can confidently navigate these routes without the fear of getting lost.

If you find yourself unable to walk a stage for any reason, there are several alternatives available. Public transport, such as buses or trains, may be accessible to help you reach the next destination. Alternatively, you can request the hotel reception to arrange a taxi for you. It’s important to listen to your body and utilize these options if needed, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

The Camino offers a gastronomic adventure, with each region presenting its distinct cuisine. Even the smallest villages en route typically have restaurants or shops where you can purchase food. The ‘Menu del Dia’ (Pilgrim’s Menu of the Day) is a common and affordable option available along the Camino, usually including a starter, main course, dessert, bread, and local wine. The Camino Francés has numerous places for lunch. However, on quieter routes, it’s advisable to plan ahead and carry provisions, especially for remote sections. Also, note that in Spain, dinner is often served later in the evening, so it’s useful to have snacks for the interim period after a day’s walk.

You can read more thoroughly about food in our comprehensive guide about Camino de Santiago .

While it’s possible to complete the Camino with minimal physical preparation, preparing beforehand can significantly enhance your experience. Activities like hill walking or aerobic exercises in the months leading up to your trip are recommended. For cycling the Camino, comfort with cycling 60km daily over varied terrain is ideal. Starting with a moderate fitness level is beneficial, but for those starting from a lower fitness base, it’s crucial to begin training slowly and steadily increase intensity. Regular exercise, including walking, running, cycling, or swimming, and incorporating longer weekend activities with some hills, can greatly aid in preparing for the Camino.

Luggage transfers are arranged to move your bags from your current accommodation to the next overnight stop as per your itinerary. You are generally required to leave your bags at the accommodation reception by 08:00, and they will be delivered to your next stop before 17:00. This service allows you to walk unencumbered by heavy luggage, enhancing your walking experience.

While many travelers opt for baggage transfer for convenience, carrying your own bags is also a choice for those seeking a more traditional pilgrim experience. If you opt to carry your bags, packing light is essential, and you may need to do occasional laundry. Alternatively, the baggage transfer service can provide the comfort of a lighter load and a wider range of clothing options.

The Camino routes, especially the Camino Francés , are known to have good mobile signal coverage, considering their somewhat remote nature. However, it’s important to note that there might be occasional areas with weak or no signal, particularly in more secluded or mountainous sections. The coverage is generally better on the more popular routes and sparser on less-traveled paths. It’s recommended to inform loved ones about these possible communication gaps and to plan accordingly.

Walking the Camino as a solo female traveler is generally considered safe. The locals along the Camino routes are known for being respectful and helpful towards pilgrims. It is, however, always prudent to take standard safety measures, such as concealing valuables, particularly in larger cities. The Camino Francés, being the most popular route, is often recommended for solo travelers who may feel apprehensive, as it tends to have more fellow travelers to accompany you. Nonetheless, it’s always advisable to stay aware of your surroundings and exercise the usual travel safety precautions.

Yes, most accommodations in larger towns and cities along the Camino offer Wifi access. Be aware that in some places, there might be charges for using Wifi. However, in more rural and remote locations along the Camino, Wifi access becomes sparse. You may occasionally find Wifi in local cafes or eateries along the route, but it’s not guaranteed. It’s advisable for travelers to prepare for limited internet access in these areas and perhaps download necessary information or maps in advance.

The most challenging part of the Camino Francés is the first section, starting from St Jean Pied de Port, which involves navigating through the Pyrenees. This section includes steep inclines and declines and is considered the toughest part of the entire route. The first day’s walk is particularly demanding, with a majority of uphill walking. However, the breathtaking scenery and tranquil environment make the effort worthwhile.

Access to drinking water is relatively easy along the Camino. The tap water in Spain is safe to drink, though it may not always taste pleasant. Bottled water is readily available for purchase, and there are numerous water fountains along the route, as noted in guidebooks. Uniquely, there’s even a wine fountain on the Camino!

If you’ve arranged for a private transfer through a service like Macs Adventure, the journey from Santiago Airport to Sarria typically takes around 1.5 hours. This direct route is a convenient option for those looking to start their Camino experience smoothly, especially after a long flight.

Customization of your Camino journey is possible, with options including additional rest days, airport transfers, and adjustments to walking itineraries. However, due to limited accommodation options in certain areas, it might not be feasible to modify every single itinerary detail. It’s best to consult with Camino travel specialists to tailor your trip according to your preferences and needs.

The Camino features a diverse array of paths, making it difficult to characterize by a single type. The journey takes you through a variety of landscapes, from shaded woodlands and picturesque vineyard trails to rolling countryside dotted with medieval villages. There are also urban stretches where you may find yourself walking through less scenic outskirts of cities. This variety is part of the Camino’s unique charm, with each section offering a different experience. Paths range from farm and dirt tracks to minor roads and footpaths.

It’s advisable to book your Camino trip as far in advance as possible due to its high popularity, especially during Holy Year (when July 25 falls on a Sunday) as pilgrim numbers can increase significantly.

While bed bug encounters can occur in shared facilities and hostels along the Camino, the accommodations used by tour operators like Camino de Santiago Tours, typically comprising small hotels and guest houses, maintain high cleanliness standards and are less likely to have bed bug issues. Nevertheless, since bed bugs can be carried by people, there’s a small chance of them appearing in hotels, but such occurrences are quickly addressed by the accommodation providers.

Essential equipment for the Camino includes good walking boots or shoes, lightweight clothing suitable for varying weather conditions, waterproof gear, and a daypack. For a comprehensive list of recommended gear, refer to the information pack provided or consult resources like blogs specializing in Camino preparations.

Once your Camino journey has begun, altering your accommodation bookings and itinerary can be challenging due to the limited availability of alternative lodging on short notice. It’s important to have a well-thought-out plan before starting your walk.

While not essential, having some knowledge of Spanish can significantly enhance your experience on the Camino. Local inhabitants appreciate the effort, and it can facilitate smoother interactions. In Northern Spain, the Camino traverses regions with unique languages and cultures. Acknowledging and respecting these cultural nuances can enrich your journey. For routes outside Spain, like the Camino Portugués and Le Puy, learning basic Portuguese and French phrases can be beneficial for engaging more deeply with locals and fellow pilgrims.

In Santiago de Compostela, Mass is held at two different times: a midday Mass at 12:00 and an evening Mass at 19:30. Both Mass times can attract large crowds, so arriving early is recommended. The service is in Spanish, but attending is highly encouraged to celebrate the completion of your Camino journey.

The Pilgrim’s Passport, or credential, is a document carried by walkers on the Camino de Santiago. It’s typically included in your arrival package, but if not, it’s easily obtainable at pilgrim offices and churches along the route. As you journey to Santiago, you collect stamps in this passport from various locations like bars, hotels, churches, and even police stations. Upon reaching Santiago, presenting this passport at the Pilgrim Office certifies your pilgrimage, earning you the Compostela certificate if you’ve walked the last 100km. For other trail sections, the passport serves as a colorful and memorable souvenir of your journey.

Testimonials.

Wonderful Camino walk with excellent accommodations. The best were hotel Ferromenteiro in Portomarin and the Boutique in Arzua. Having the van take our bags from town to town was extremely helpful in completing the daily walks.

Just returned from cycling the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago del Compostelo. Wonderful experience and made easier by Follow the Camino who organised the whole thing including hotels, carriage of luggage and cycle hire. They were easy to contact and responsive to any queries both before the event and during the holiday. Would highly recommend.

My husband and I decided to do the Camino de Santiago in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and we could not have picked a better outfit to help us make a very special one. We did not have a lot of time, so we decided to do the Camino on bikes. Follow el Camino were very accurate in describing what we should expect. The bikes that were delivered to our first hotel for us to use were perfectly sized and in great condition. They include the tools and spare parts necessary for the road and they came in handy. The accommodations were expertly picked, very comfortable and always close enough to the center of the action without being in the middle of it. We had a fantastic time. The only thing I would change for the next time is not to have such long rides each day to be able to spend more tine in each town.

We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday- it was a wonderful experience made more so by the great choice of guides that you have. We found the same last year with the two guides for the UK coast to coast trip. They were so helpful, when my battery failed on my own bike the guides could not have done more in terms of helping me find a new e bike so that I could continue my journey comfortably. Also, the lunches provided could not have been better and were prepared beautifully by the guides. Thank you so much for providing such a good service all round.

Follow the Camino did a great job organizing and managing our trip. All accommodations were outstanding and all logistics were punctual and reliable. Highly recommend!

Follow The Camino helped us with the trip of a lifetime. We had started planning our Portuguese Coastal Camino way back in early 2020. The pandemic put a hold on our trip until September 2022. I have to say that from a logistical, financial, and overall level, everything was perfect. The hotels were nice. The luggage arrived every day on-time. The included meals were all fine. And the overall value was outstanding. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to do the Portugal to Spain Camino to consider using Follow the Camino as their agent. Buen Camino!

My first time doing the Camino and the professional way FOLLOW THE CAMINO handled our trip from start to finish was second to none. The communication made it so easy to understand what we needed to do to prepare and gave us plenty of hints and tips to make the walks more enjoyable and make the most of the stunning scenery along the way. They also supplied a luggage transfer to our next hotel and the hotels were very clean, great food and excellent prices. We were given a kit with Camino Passport, Camino shell and a bandana which came in handy protecting from the sun. Over all FOLLOW THE CAMINO made this an experience we will never forget and would highly recommend them to groups or solo for a life time of memories.

Our group had a fabulous time on our Camino Way walk. The support, guidance and pre-trip information were excellent. The roadbook with maps was a great help although there were plenty of markers and hundreds of fellow travellers to keep us on the right track. The most welcome surprise was the accommodation which, in each case, was very good and, in some cases, outstanding!

I am just back from a truly memorable and incredible 7 day experience which was made so good by the attention to detail and going beyond my needs in relation to a holiday package from the people in “Follow the Camino “ from the pick up drivers to hotel staff to the quality of service I cannot fault one bit. My bag was taking daily and dropped off at the next destination. Breakfast was had daily. The quality of the hotels was comfortable and clean & tidy. I individual reviewed them all. This is not my first trip with “follow the Camino” and certainly won’t be my last.. well done – Gold star.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Camino de Santiago

The amount of time it takes to walk the Camino de Santiago depends on several factors, including which route you choose, your walking pace, and whether you take rest and sightseeing days.

For example, most people take between 30 and 45 days to walk the Camino Francés, hiking the Camino Portuguese takes around 30-40 days, while the Camino Ingles lasts only 5-7 days on average.

Many adventurers also choose to walk the final 100 km of the Camino Frances or the Camino Portuguese, as this is enough to get your pilgrim’s passport! When booking your Camino de Santiago trip, mind your fitness level, how much time you have available, and what you want to get out of the experience.

The difficulty of your Camino de Santiago tour depends on what route you choose.

For example, the Camino Francés, the most popular route, features rolling hills and some steeper sections, like the Pyrenees crossing. The Portuguese Way is known for its gentler terrain, while the Primitivo is more challenging with steeper climbs and descents.

With the right preparation and mindset, anyone can conquer the Camino and embark on a transformative walk to Santiago de Compostella.

Almost anyone can walk the Camino de Santiago – with a few caveats.

While you don’t need to be a super athlete, a certain level of fitness is essential. The Camino involves walking or biking long distances every day, often on uneven terrain. While the difficulty varies depending on the route, even the shorter routes require several hours of daily activity. Good general fitness will help you enjoy the experience more and avoid injuries.

Mental resilience is needed, too. You should be prepared for long days, discomfort, and unexpected situations on your Camino tour. Dealing with changing weather, unforeseen circumstances, and potential language barriers is part of the adventure!

If you’re not sure if you can manage the guided Camino trip, opt for shorter itineraries like the 100 KM tours, or choose a supported tour and travel at your own pace!

Your Camino de Santiago holidays can be an affordable adventure or a luxurious one, depending on your choices.

Accommodations are the biggest factor. Pilgrim hostels, or “albergues”, are the most budget-friendly option, costing around €10-20 per night. Private rooms, hotels, and other types of lodging can range from €30 to €100+ per night.

Regarding the food, you can cook your own meals in Albergue kitchens to save money, or eat at restaurants and cafes, which can vary in price depending on location and type of cuisine. Expect to spend €10-30 per day on food.

Other costs, such as museum entrance fees, transportation, and gear, are all up to you. Logically, luxury Camino de Santiago tours will be more expensive than standard guided tours, but local guides will usually tell you about all the more affordable options if you ask them.

With careful planning and budgeting, you can have an amazing experience without breaking the bank!

Walking the Camino alone is considered to be extremely safe!

First off, The Camino is well-maintained and well-marked, with a steady flow of pilgrims throughout the year. This means you’re at a lower risk of getting lost or being isolated.

Also, the Camino fosters a strong sense of community among pilgrims. You’ll often encounter others walking alone, and there are opportunities to connect and share experiences.

Finally, the towns and villages along the Camino are familiar with pilgrims and offer a welcoming and secure environment, while the authorities keep the Camino’s popularity in mind and take steps to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

The Camino de Santiago is one of the safest trails you could tackle on your own. However, if you’re thinking of walking the Camino alone, you should weigh your comfort level, risk tolerance, and desired experience to make the best decision for yourself. Remember, safety is paramount, so be prepared and exercise good judgment throughout your pilgrimage.

Trip: Camino de Santiago - Spain

One day in particular [stands out for me on the Camino] about half of the way through, where I was steeped in so much grounded love and bliss that I thought I might burst into the ether! I remember being reminded at the beginning of the trip that while the visual experience of the Camino was to be expected, the true gift of the Camino lay within oneself and connecting to nature and my true Self. That happened for me during the second week of the Camino. Suddenly I was no longer a pilgrim walking a trail, I WAS the trail and the sky, the chestnut trees, the birds, flowers, pastures, cows, sheep. I had become One with the Universe and I was no longer breathing; it was breathing me. There were no boundaries between my body and everything around me. I was everything and everything was me! Perfect harmony! I enjoyed every place we stayed, but the pazos were a special treat not only because of the relative luxury compared to the humbler lodgings, but because of their history and countryside settings. They were quieter, sometimes only housing our Camino family for the night, which gave us a private intimate environment to reflect after a day’s walk and to meditate peacefully in the mornings as a group.

Pam-1

This was my first pilgrimage with you and it was very impressive, in every way. The accommodations exceeded my expectations, and the quality of food was excellent. I appreciated all of the support with regard to elevating our consciousness with daily morning meditation, daily affirmations, walking in silence, and sacred sharing circles. I continue to find spirituality in my [daily] steps as I walk with the divine. I have felt immense joy and am energized each day by the Camino walk. A walk with God every step.

Yoko

Trip: Camino de Santiago – Spain

After coming back to my “normal” life back in the States, I had become more aware of the value of simplified life on the Camino. How my regular scheduled, busy, always on the go daily life with iPhone and iPad pulling attention away from my center, I’ve realized, had affected my inner peace. On Camino we just walked, communing with the nature, friends and fellow pilgrims. All the necessities were provided. Once you’ve experienced this kind of simply “being”, always “doing” with a few breaks here and there, you realize, won’t quite fulfill soul’s yearning for deep stillness. I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to nurture my soul this way.

Nan

Walking the Camino in silence was one of the moments that carried me from a personal goal to a Spiritual Journey. The awareness of God’s gifts can be realized by “walking” in the Camino Spirit. The Memory is more than a thought, it is a Choice to be aware of the Purification and Blessings experienced. I feel Life with God’s Perfect Presence is the Camino de Santiago. The commitment to the Journey and Sitabai’s Love of the Camino was inspiring and palpable. Her physical Energy on the Camino was transformed by her Spiritual Self.

Nan

I gained so much from this – the magnetism of the group forged deep friendships in a short time. This [experience] was real expansion for me – Self as well as self-knowledge. I loved the trip. You have given us a gift of a lifetime.

Barbara

One of my highlight moments was walking Muxia’s hill [to the cross]. No one was there, only the sound of the sea, the church bell and a slight wind. I took those moments to imprint forever the magical days walking on the Camino on my heart and in my mind. I will never forget that moment or the Camino pilgrimage. The world softened for me on the Camino. I felt a sense of deepened peace that has stayed with me. “Buen Camino” is heard as a song in my heart! Thank you for a life changing pilgrimage! Ultreia!

IsvariDick

Along the Camino are many churches, including stone churches in the Romanesque style dating back hundreds of years. Several of these churches especially impressed me with the power of the divine feminine. I came away from this pilgrimage with a much stronger sense of my own relationship to Divine Mother. The accommodations for the 2019 Camino Pilgrimage exceeded my expectations. We stayed in a number of charming old-world casas and pazos (Galician manor houses), which allowed us to enjoy the Spanish rural countryside and partake in the local culture and cuisine. The final days of the 2019 Camino Pilgrimage included an extended and varied experience of Galicia at the “end of the world” at both Muxia and Finisterre. All of these helped to broaden our understanding of this special and unique part of Spain, as well as give us time to integrate our experiences as walking pilgrims before returning home to our busy lives. I appreciated all of the support with regard to elevating our consciousness (prayer, meditation, silence, sacred sharing). The quality of the food was excellent. Thank you so much, Sitabai, for a memorable and life-changing adventure. The experience was heart-opening and invigorating. I feel that I am still sustained by the lingering Camino energy.

Jackie

The purification ceremony [before entering into Santiago] worked a small miracle for me as I let go of something that I had let bother me but should not have allowed it to have that power over me. I loved that. You also did a wonderful job planning and guiding in all aspects.

Neal2

Sitabai is an amazing leader and spiritual beacon. Thank you for giving so much of yourself during this amazing pilgrimage. You touched our lives profoundly.

Cynthia2

The space of the present moment allowed for a connection with myself that was joyful and felt intimate. It gave me time to slowly notice what was going on in my body, mind and spirit. Now that I am back in my regular life routine, I find myself walking slowly, moving more mindfully, listening more intently and open-heartedly. Just that the Spanish rural countryside and the historic lodgings are amazing and beautiful. I love the connection with the ancient and with nature. Muxia and Finisterre [at the End of the World] were magical. I wouldn’t want to skip these last 4 days.

Suranya4

One special memory for me on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage was the day we walked 9 miles. Before the trip I was concerned about my stamina and ability to keep up with the group and to complete this trek. That day I made good use of the affirmation we had been given and enlisted the help of [my source of Spirit] to keep me going. But the most fun of the day was when a fellow pilgrim started walking with me and suggested that we sing [sacred music] together while walking. How could I have enough breath and energy to sing while walking uphill? To my surprise, I discovered that I had more than enough of both. We found ourselves swinging our poles, walking with high steps, and chanting sacred music with great energy and joy. Our tasks everyday were simple and clear: eat, sleep, meditate, and walk (not in that order). That simplicity, regularity, and rhythm allowed us to go within and quiet our minds and hearts. At the end of the day, I felt myself exhale and relax into the arms of Divine Mother. This was the experience of a life time.

Maureen

I appreciated the morning prayers at the start of our walks which helped make space for the divine. My highlight moment is being part of this amazing group, feeling the presence of the divine everywhere, so many breathtaking moments; there is not one moment or memory but a flood of them.

Jennifer

The food at all of our stops was outstanding! I loved the trip! The accommodations were so special, including the delightful individuals that ran/owned the places – I really appreciate all of the thought and care that went into selecting the accommodations and curating the entire trip. It was the trip of a lifetime for me. Thank you so much, my soul is full of joy.

IsvariDick

I particularly enjoyed walking into the sun-kissed plaza in front of the Santiago Cathedral for the first time surrounded by other pilgrims. I felt I was surrounded by celebration and an incredible joyous energy! I also found walking through the ancient Castro (pre-roman Celtic fortified hilltop settlement) near the village of Castromaior located on a hilltop surrounded by beautiful wooded countryside, the presence of Celtic ancestors who inhabited these sites thousands of years ago, was very special for me. Walking day after day on the Camino de Santiago as part of my Camino Pilgrimage gave me the sense of seeing myself and my walk as part of an ancient stream of human existence and striving through pilgrimage to know the divine. I hope to keep the memory of this, intentional way of life with me always. I am also glad that we got to experience Muxia [at the End of the World], explore the hill above the town and the rebuilt church on the sea, and to learn the ancient role Muxia played in the pilgrimage tradition.

Kathy3

I truly feel solid in the knowledge that Spirit is with me always! I just have to tap in. I feel more confident in who I really am and this touches all aspects of my life – so yes, I am a changed person because of this pilgrimage! Throwing the stones in the ocean (for myself and others) at the End of the World was a special moment, and walking the beach with my own letting-go process was amazing, too. I also realized that I don’t need big whistles, bangs and fanfare to help me process and let go. All the places were amazing. I loved the variety and the uniqueness of each one! The food was incredible too. I felt taken well taken care of and loved the space to deepen my connection with spirit!

Walking the Camino de Santiago

Camino de santiago walking tours.

Stretching high above the historic old town of Santiago de Compostela, the stunning, baroque-infused city cathedral remains one of the must-see architectural destinations in Europe – an eight-century old masterpiece which marks the end of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. This famous pilgrimage, often referred to as St. James’ Way, actually predates the cathedral, and the building itself has come to embody the spiritual journey that has been sought by travelers since the early Middle Ages.

We can organize and operate this trip as a private group departure with a minimum group size of 8 persons. Start organizing your private Russia art adventure here .

Best time to travel: June for the “White Nights” Best gateway city: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg Slide Show

Experience the art treasures of Moscow and St. Petersburg with guide, Amy Osaki. Begin in Moscow, continental Europe’s largest city, the seat of the government of Russia, and now home to over twenty billionaires! View iconic sites such as the Kremlin (which began as a fortress in the eleventh century), Red Square, and the sixteenth century St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then explore the art masterpieces at the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Russian Fine Art encompassing works from the eleventh to the twentieth century. Visit the Armory at the Kremlin filled with Imperial treasures including Faberge eggs once exchanged by the tsar and tsarina at Easter. Conclude your Moscow experience at the quiet seventeenth century Novodevichy Convent, one of many World Heritage sites included in the trip.

After a short flight, continue the trip with five days in St. Petersburg where you’ll be immersed in the opulence of Imperial Russia. Established by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg (known as Petrograd and Leningrad for most of the twentieth century) was the capital of the Russian empire for over two hundred years until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Hermitage—said to be the largest art museum in the world with a collection of over three million objects housed in four main buildings—rivals the Louvre in Paris for both the quantity and quality of its treasures. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and open to the pubic for over two hundred years the museum is so vast that we’ll spread our visit out over several days and organize it by different themes. Also on the schedule is a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress—the original citadel above the river founded in 1703—as well as some of the Imperial palaces in and around St. Petersburg such as Peterhof, a World Heritage Site. Peter I hired French architects to work on his many palaces, including Jean Baptiste Le Blond who worked with Andre Le Notre at Versailles. Consider enhancing your Russian experience by purchasing tickets to a performance—perhaps a ballet at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (also known as the Kirov).

Day 1 Overnight in Moscow Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally-located hotel, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy an afternoon and early evening walk through Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad) past St. Basil’s Cathedral, and GUM department store all of which are back-dropped by the walls of the Kremlin fortress. Remember that we are here during the fabled “White Nights” when the summer days linger with light-filled evenings.

Day 2 Overnight in Moscow Within the walls of the Kremlin fortress, visit the Armoury Museum, one of Moscow’s oldest museums established at the start of the nineteenth century. The Kremlin Armoury was the royal arsenal; it produced and stored the weapons, jewelry and other regalia of the tsars. The museum’s collection encompasses four thousand items of applied art from Russia and elsewhere dating from the early fourth century to the twentieth century. Later in the day, visit the collection of masterpieces of the renowned Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov collections were begun by the philanthropist Tretyakov brothers in the early nineteenth century. The gallery is recognized by many as a key repository of Russian art spanning the nation’s artistic tradition from early Orthodox icons to art nouveau, impressionist, and avant-garde works.

Day 3 Overnight in St Petersburg Enjoy a morning visit to the sixteenth century Novodevichy Convent named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The convent’s name is sometimes translated as “New Maidens’ Monastery” to differentiate is from the convent within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Surrounded by white crenellated walls, this complex of churches has remained essentially intact since the seventeenth century. Here you’ll find the five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk with its spectacular iconostasis and the tall, red and white Gate Church of the Transfiguration which is often cited as a fine example of “Moscow Baroque” architecture. The neighboring Novodevichy Cemetery is the final resting place of the likes of Anton Chekhov, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Boris Yeltsin. This afternoon fly to St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city situated on the banks of the Neva River where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4 Overnight in St Petersburg Start of your exploration of St. Petersburg with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg. The fortress was built to the designs of the Swiss Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the early eighteenth century. Trezzini’s Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates the fortress grounds and its iconic golden spire punctuates into the Baltic sky. Later visit the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, acclaimed as an “encyclopedia of St. Petersburg aristocratic interior design.” The palace was the home of the Yusupov family from 1830 and 1917 and was the place where Grigori Rasputin, a spiritual mentor to Tsar Nicholas II and the Royal Family in the early 20th century, was assassinated. A visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood built between 1883 and 1907 rounds out the day. The church was built in “Russian Revivalist” architectural style by Tsar Alexander III in commemoration of his father, Alexander II. The church occupies a conspicuous location on St. Petersburg’s Griboedov Canal and contains 7,500 square meters of mosaics; the interior walls and ceilings are completely covered by mosaics.

Day 5 Overnight in St Petersburg Seeing St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum in a day would be like trying to see the Smithsonian in a day! Rather than a forced march through the galleries at a rapid pace, we will slow down and savor the masterpieces. Remember, there are nearly seven miles worth of exhibitions! Today we focus on “Imperial Russia,” touring the rooms decorated for members of the Russian Imperial Family and viewing the art they commissioned and collected. This is the art that influenced the style of the grand palaces of the era. View the Grand Suite of rooms, Peter I’s collection of gold, and the jewelers art owned by the Russian Imperial Family (including Fabergé eggs, gold and diamonds). Here, too, are the rooms of Catherine II and her son Paul I with their fifteenth to eighteenth century French paintings and sculpture (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, Chardin, and Houdon).

Day 6 Overnight in St Petersburg Return for a second dose of the Hermitage! Today is dedicated to the famous European masterpieces exhibited at the Hermitage. Feast your eyes on memorable works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Velazquez, and El Greco. At the Hermitage, you can revel in Rembrandt; there are twenty of his works in the museum’s collection. After lunch, enjoy the eighteenth to twentieth century masterpieces of Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky. Digest the art and reflect on this unique collection of human creations. Consider an evening performance, possibly at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Day 7 Overnight in St Petersburg Journey by hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to experience Peter I’s palace at Peterhof, a series of palaces and gardens that evoke comparisons with Versailles which Peter visited in 1715. Begun in 1714 with the construction of the Monplaisir palace and expanded by later Imperial generations who added Rococo and Neo-classical elements, Peterhof is now a World Heritage Site. The creative mastery of architects, engineers, artists and craftsmen from throughout Europe is on display here and all is choreographed to celebrate water in homage to Peter, the maritime emperor.

Day 8 Overnight in St Petersburg Go behind the scenes with an excursion to the Hermitage Museum’s Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center on the right back of the Neva River north of Kamenny Island. This vast treasure house is only accessible by private tour. Later, travel to Vasilvesky Island across the river from the Hermitage to visit Menishkov Palace completed in 1721 and now the oldest stone building in St. Petersburg. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.
