tours in baja

Baja Tours boats the only PADI 5 star dive resort for over twenty five years now in La Paz and only certified NOM133 service provider in Baja with the highest level in ecotourism recognized worldwide.

Here is some more information for you that could be helpful:

La Paz is an amazing destination but with two distinct seasons.

Our cold water season is from December 15th through to May 15th with water temperatures from 64-76f and during that time you can expect to see a number of different species of whales such as Gray whales, Humpback whales, Blue whales, Fin whales, short fin pilot whakes, killer whales or Orcas and Sperm whales too. Our warm water season is from July 15th through to November 15th with water temperatures from 84-90f and visibility often over 60 feet.

The whale sharks season starts from October 1st to May 31st every year and they in numbers up to 30 individuals in the bay of La Paz. My suggestion is always from November to late April in order to be sure of sightings.

Our sea lion colony of Los Islotes is an excellent dive all year round with 600 brown Californian playful sea lions but it is restricted during mating season June 1st to August 30th. The seamounts of El Bajo where we often see schooling hammerhead sharks and silky sharks provide an awesome dive year round but in the winter months sometimes weather conditions do not allow us to get out there as it is 55 miles away.

From late June to late October we often see giant Pacific manta rays at one specific dive site called La Reina off the island of Cerralvo. Most of our diving is around the island of Espiritu Santo and on our website you can see a number of those dive sites but there are over 25 different sites to visit in La Paz.

September and October are the busiest months of the year but the winter months of February to April are also very popular for the whale watching too.

Embark on one of the most memorable days of your life

We offer visitors a peek through a very special and little known corner of the world. To truly appreciate the beauty of La Paz, you have to look beneath the surface!

Baja Vacations

If you love exotic locales filled with nature and wildlife, then you have found the right place. The Baja peninsula is one of the most diverse geographical areas of the world and stretches across millions of acres of protected biosphere reserves and sanctuaries. Every year over 97% of the planet’s gray whales, plus thousands of humpback and blue whales, migrate to Baja. John Steinbeck called it “ferocious with life” for its playful sea lions, leaping mobula rays and acrobatic dolphin pods.

Forests of giant cacti cover the coastal cliffs serving as crucial breeding grounds for thousands of seabirds and a thriving array of desert flora and fauna. On the east side is the Sea of Cortez. The “world’s aquarium,” nutrient-dense waters are calm and home to more than 900 fish species and one-third of the planet’s marine mammals. On the west is the Pacific coast, known for its peaceful lagoons like Bahía Magdalena where gray whales make their annual visit to give birth.

What Adventuresmith Travelers Say About Their Trips To Baja California

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter. Everything was wonderful!

Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

Accommodations Review

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Crew & Guides Review

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

  • Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

We did the Loreto to La Paz cruise aboard the Westward in December 2018 - January 2019, with a 2-day rock art trip before the cruise. It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. A local resident in Loreto recommended the ship. Everything was wonderful!

[I most enjoyed the] rock art: the great mural site is gorgeous, both the hike to it and the images. Swimming with whale sharks: we had an unusually good experience, the sharks are really impressive; snorkeling over schools of sardines and colorful fish; some gorgeous hikes. We did a number of hikes, three or four kayak trips, and three snorkel excursions (fish watching; swim with young sea lions; swim with whale sharks in the La Paz harbor). Hike lengths were up to about 2 miles, on good trails. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter.

The boat has snorkel gear and shorty wet suits (with shoulders; if you buy your own, shoulders help keep you warm). You typically spend 2 to 4 hours off the ship during a day; the Westward has an excellent library of several hundred books (field guides, natural history, history, adventure, travel, fiction) covering Baja, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (if you like to read, you'll find lots to choose from).

Staterooms on the Westward are comfortable; choice does not matter much (we spent little time in them except for sleeping or resting). The enclosed fantail is a great place to watch the scenery. The mid-ship parlor is also very comfortable.

Meals Review

Tracie does an excellent job accommodating dietary needs (we had one pescatarian; most dinners had fish appetizer or soup and main course), but needs details in advance.  Portions are moderate and satisfying (not huge). Excellent use of fresh produce and fish. We tend to eat much more simply; I enjoyed the fine cuisine, but my wife would have preferred a simpler cuisine.

Traveler Advice

There is no wi-fi availability for almost the entire trip, so be prepared to enjoy not being connected! We liked the north-to-south trip, as highlights of the trip (swim with sea lions and whale sharks) came at the end.

Captain Bill is warm, friendly, interesting, and does everything he can to ensure that passengers have a great experience. Chef Tracie is a talented cook, with many years of experience (some in outstanding restaurants), who prepares excellent food, including 3-course dinners, nicely presented, with wine pairings. Our naturalist guide Carlos was born and raised in La Paz, speaks excellent English, and knows the fauna and flora very well. He was exceptionally helpful to my wife, who is less mobile than were the other guests. He also prepared a video with highlights of still photos and videos, distributed to guests as we left. Carlos is exceptionally knowledgeable, good humored, helpful. The thumb drive he gave us has a really wonderful selection of photos and videos (he uses an underwater go-pro, so there are great videos of schools of fish, seal lions, whale sharks).

Our trip on the Westward was wonderful! Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels. Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

Though rooms are very small on the boat, which was to be expected, they are comfortable. The boat wasn't completely finished when we boarded it, so there were a few items missing in the staterooms (i.e. mirrors in the cabins, hooks to hang anything on, door jambs, etc.)

There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Chef Tracie is a magician in the kitchen!  Her meals were incredible --tasty, creative, healthy and filling. It was always so much fun to see what she prepared. It was also fun to watch her work in the kitchen, whipping up cuisine with influences from all over the globe. She also made great use of the fresh fish, scallops and clams that our naturalist guide Carlos secured for her.  Mealtimes were delightful! Tracie also goes out of her way to make sure that passengers' dietary needs are adhered to, so no worries if you are gluten free, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, etc.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The material provided ahead of time was ample and we particularly appreciated the suggested book list. We did not know, however, that the boat wasn't fully completed until we got on it. We would have appreciated knowing this information prior to our trip.

Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). We truly enjoyed his company.

Captain Bill is a very experienced seaman who always puts safety first. We felt very secure with him at the helm. He is incredibly personable and a great storyteller, and adds so much to the experience. Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family.

The engineer and carpenter, Randy, was also an integral crew member, who added much to the overall experience. He is a very kind man and incredibly skillful at his work, who also possesses a great sense of humor with many stories to tell. We were in awe of the work he did on the ship, while we were onboard.

Follow the guidelines provided in regards to items and clothing to bring, as the list is very thorough. Although there is hiking, heavy hiking boots are not necessary. A pair of gym shoes is fine. Reading some of the books suggested is helpful to provide you with some knowledge of the area prior to your trip. Don't over pack, as you can wash your clothes in your sink and hang them dry up on deck.

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

This trip was exactly as advertised – among the great whales, so close you could literally touch them. The ship and food were excellent with a superb, very attentive staff.

The room onboard was small but very comfortable.

We really enjoyed the local and organic produce, fresh pastries, and great wine list.

AdventureSmith did a great job, we felt very prepared heading into the trip. We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

I would emphatically recommend this to anyone– above nearly anything else you do. We saw beautiful fish, coral, birds, and yes, sea lions. It depends on their mood how much contact you get but in all cases a unique and very special experience that’s well worth the trip and the price… They’ve thought out every last detail of your experience so new things come at just the right speed to be comfy with just enough relaxation to appreciate them.

A group of 6 of us from LA were treated like family and felt super safe. Our group had a mixture of beginners and ocean veterans and they made sure all of us had fun on our own levels… We went on a boat and saw dolphins, turtles, and swam with sea lions. It was all so dreamy. Then we broke from lunch on a private beach where they made us lunch with fresh fish.

Awesome experience, best thing ever. Service was outstanding. We had a great time with friends, whale watching is one of the most beautiful experiences we’ve ever had.

tours in baja

Top-rated Whale-Watching excursions in famed San Ignacio Lagoon.

About baja discovery.

Baja Discovery, a leader in ecotourism since 1991, provides comfortable, easy-going, and educational tours. Our groups are small and led by naturalist guides who understand and respect the ecosystems of the Baja peninsula.

Explore beautiful San Ignacio Lagoon.

Laguna San Ignacio is the only lagoon that remains undeveloped and pristine. Here the gray whales spend the months of December to April mating (quite the spectacle to behold), giving birth and feeding their young calves.

Experience the highest level of service.

In camp, you'll enjoy roomy sleeping tents and comfortable cots, "state-of-the art" bathroom facilities and solar showers. All meals, which include plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood, are served from our kitchen inside a large dining and activity tent.

Preserving and protecting the ocean and ourselves.

We take seriously the responsibility to protect both the gray-whale sanctuary and the dramatic, pristine environment of the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve that surrounds it, including support to the local people who live there.

An opportunity to marvel in the company of the majestic grey whales and their progeny as they frolic in the natural habitats off the coast of Baja California

Whale Watching in Baja California, Mexico

A custom tour offers an opportunity to experience a kaleidoscope of life-memorable activities along the shores of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula: petting baby whales, tasting fine wine at a local vineyard, exploring the outstanding natural scenery of the region, and visiting local points of natural and cultural interest—with an option to fly low in a small airplane to fully absorb the striking presence of this desert landscape.

Our travel partner offers in-depth insights to this remarkable region of Mexico, underpinned by close-knit working relationships with local community service providers. Choose from set date tours, or request a custom itinerary to suit your dates and travel preferences.

Whale watching season in Mexico

The Grey Whales journey from the icy waters off the coast of Alaska to arrive at the warmer coastal lagoons along the Baja California peninsula during the month of January.

  • The breeding season is short and advance planning is essential.
  • Peak viewing begins in late January .
  • The whale watching season ends in late March .

The coastal lagoons near Guerrero Negro are located on the 28th Parallel, virtually halfway between the northern and southern reaches of Mexico’s Baja region.

Mexico’s Baja peninsula is a narrow but very long tract of land, so to make the best use of time, our associate recommends that visitors fly at least one-way.

Planned tour: As part of your tour package, your tour transportation, accommodations, most meals, and all assistance services will be provided to ensure that your time is spent absorbing the experience and not concerning about the travel logistics.

Set-date itineraries take a picturesque road trip to Guerrero Negro and fly back from there on a small private aircraft to an air strip in Ensenada, with ground transportation to San Diego.  Your party may be combined with other parties on ground transport during these set-date tours.

Custom itineraries are formed according to your party’s schedules, interests, and transportation preferences. A custom tour offers full flexibility and ground transportation is exclusively assigned to your party on custom itineraries.

Accommodations. Hotels chosen for the tour are attractive local hotels and inns, and all rooms have private baths.  They provide comfort amidst the natural scenic locations where they are situated.  You can expect excellent service with friendly and attentive staff, and the water and food are safe.

A unique tour in an extraordinary location that will create lifelong memories for you and your party

These tours, carefully crafted by a highly skilled tour operator based in Baja and working hand-in-glove with local indigenous communities in the region, offer one of the most awe-inspiring travel experiences available in Mexico.

The highlight of tour is being in the company of the grey whales and their baby offspring. Many dream of meeting a whale and feeling its majestic presence nearby, and this tour opens an opportunity for you and your family and friends to realize that encounter in a way that respects nature and the whales themselves as they frolic in the natural habitat where they arrived to give birth to their progeny.

Highlights of the Tour

Your tour will be composed of a series of activities that will bring you close to the rugged and breathtaking beauty of Baja’s deserts—a place that provokes inward contemplation and provides inspiration for our senses.

You can join a set-date group tour , or request a no-obligation quote for a fully customized tour to suit your party’s schedules, interests, and travel preferences.

In all cases, knowledgeable and passionate English-speaking guides will provide detailed insights and narratives about the natural history and the local culture as you travel through and absorb this remarkable experience.

Extraordinary whale encounters

The coastal lagoon area off the coast of Guerrero Negro is one of the best places in the world to meet and encounter with gray whales. You may have the chance to see mothers with their newborns; some whales encourage their offspring to frolic with the humans and you may even touch them during carefully-managed encounters.

Birdwatching in Baja

Guerrero Negro is also known one one the world’s ornithological hotspots, as the region provides a vast natural and unspoiled habitat to host migratory birds as they meet and mate among its pristine estuary ecosystems and isolated salt flats.

Iconic garden, ancient caves and a salt mine

Hike and wonder among the whimsical granite boulders and boojum trees of Cataviña, an iconic garden of cacti and hidden cave paintings. A guided tour into the largest salt mine in the world is also possible; this a remarkable experience that leads you in to a pearl white landscape of mountains composed entirely of salt rock.

Wine tasting tour

You’ll be passing through the heart of Valle de Guadalupe, one of Mexico’s top and most renowned wine producing regions. The tour offers an option to visit one of the great vineyards of the region where you will take lunch, taste from a variety of fine wines produced on the estate, and have an opportunity to buy some wine to take home with you, directly from the producer.

Active touring on foot and water

Depending on your timescale, interest, and physical ability, local hikes can be included as well as kayaking in the local lagoons. This can include a hike along coastal volcanoes with a wonderful view of surrounding wetlands.

Visits to local points of interest

Itineraries also include visits to local cultural centers, museums, and other local community centers, reserves and local initiatives to help you gain deeper insights into the local culture and its people.

Local restaurants and eateries

The tour will include visits to hand-picked places to eat, including popular local restaurants and quaint local eateries, with fresh oysters and other seafood being one of the local delicacies due to the proximity of the ocean and the Sea of Cortés. Special dietary arrangements can be accommodated with advance notice.

Small airplane travel

Small aircraft fly lower and slower than commercial jets.  The tour operator offers an option to climb aboard a small aircraft to return to Ensenada and in doing so encounter a bygone era of air travel, when the experience was valued over speed.

The ~300-nautical mile (two-and-a-half hour) flight offers passengers a birds-eye view of the areas you explored on ground, including majestic mountains that rise-up from the vast desert landscapes to the east, and the foam and spray of the inspiring and powerful Pacific Ocean to the west.

Optional Road Cruise northward

If you would prefer not to fly back to Ensenada, you may opt for a Land Cruise back north, with a side trip to visit the Sea of Cortés.  This land cruse return option adds one or two nights to your timescale and itinerary.

Typical 6-day itinerary

Tours typically last six days and begin and end in San Diego, California; or in Tijuana, Mexico.

Baja whales and nature tour prices

These carefully designed tours to visit the whales in-season, combined with other local attractions in the Baja region, are offered on set-dates with a preset itinerary or via a customized quote to suit your own dates (season runs from January to March), activity interests, transport options, and tour timescales.

  • Six-day tours are priced from US$1,920 per person.
  • Make a request for dates in 2024/2025 and receive a no-obligation quote from our travel associate.

  • 7 Day Adventure

Experience the Real Mexico as you are introduced personally to local friends and families on our 7-Day Guided Tour.

You will be invited into people’s homes, workplaces and ranches.  You will hang out together while you participate in activities with them. This is our concept of cultural interaction and friendship.  You will also experience many of the natural wonders of the Baja. We throw in the Grey Whale Adventure. You won’t want to miss swimming or visiting with the incredible, yet docile, Whale Sharks (4 to 9 meters in length). Interact with Marine Life, Forests, Oasis, Natural Springs Mountain Biospheres, Desert Landscapes and the people who live there.

  • 9 Day Adventure

As with our 7 day tour we include the Grey Whales and the Coroscos Ranch Adventure on our 9-Day Guided Tour.

More days, more options, more relaxed. All the natural wonders of the 7 day tour. Consider Coroscos, a crumbling adobe village of about 120 people, (formerly 700 in the sugar cane years) is a cornerstone of our tour. We will introduce you to many locals and you will see and participate in their traditional way of life, in town and at the ranch. Internet arrived 2 years ago at one home, the streets are made of stone, and streetlights just arrived. On this tour, you will also have time to visit the desert hot springs, population one. You will have more time for activities with our friends and their families.

  • 11 Day Adventure

More time in the Magic Village of Todos Santos with new friends and/or other options on our 11-Day Guided Tour.

More cultural activities and Pacific Beaches. You might decide on extra relax time in La Paz and the Sea of Cortez. You may adventure with Chito to the mountain biosphere, population zero, above the desert.  Or you could experience the pristine area of Cabo Pulmo, a small hamlet of 80 people who have fought tenaciously to protect their hard coral reef, the only one in North America. This now national park has fully recovered and teems with abundant marine life populations. And of course you won’t miss the highlights of the 7 day tour. You have options with this 11 day version.

Authentic Mexican Culture

Experience the real mexico on your guided tour.

  • Unique Life Experiences and Activities with Mexican Families and Friends
  • Guided Tours of Todos Santos and the Baja with groups of 7 or less (or larger private groups). Private translator.
  • Specializing in families. Families with young children. Adventurous couples or groups
  • The Grey Whales are in their bays to give birth or to mate from late Dec. to late March.
  • You may choose to swim with the Whale Sharks and Sea Lions from the end of Oct. to May.
  • Traditional Adobe and Stone Village – “Coroscos” A Day in the life of the 1850s – Personal Interaction
  • Desert Ranch Activity: Milk the goats, make cheese, make tortillas and then Quesadillas over the fire.

Hi from Kevin: I might say that I arrived in Todos Santos because of sports injuries from hockey, soccer and skiing. With this in mind I found that yoga helped so I signed up for a 26 day training course/vacation on the beach near the Cerritos surf. Guided active cultural adventures for couples, small groups, families, and adventurers

Our Philosophy:  We offer you comfort in a new kind of tourism where you meet the people of Mexico and the destination. Our Guided Tours are made up of small groups (2-7 persons, or private). The fact that we live here allows us to introduce you to our personal friends, a close group of Mexican people living in small communities. We start with a welcome dinner and invite some of our friends to meet you. Almost every activity we have to offer you is led by someone in our local group. You will also  meet the artists, fisherman, ranchers, artisans and many other Mexican people in the Baja California Sur, not just waiters or staff at all Inclusives, on cruise ships or on bus tours. We design custom adventure tours in the Mexican Baja with grey whales, whale sharks, ranchers, our friends, and more!   We Get People out of 5 Star Hotels, off of Cruise Ships and off of Big Bus Tours.

Sea Kayak in Baja

Come kayak Baja with Sea Kayak Adventures!  It's a paddler's dream-world of dramatic contrasts where russet peaks meet turquoise waters in one of the world's best  sea kayaking, snorkeling, and whale watching destinations . The  Sea of Cortez , home to  1/3 of the world’s marine mammals , is world-renowned for close encounters with friendly wild whales. It's a paradise come true. Sea Kayak Adventures is honored to hold one of the few permits to kayak Baja’s  Islands of Loreto Bay  UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Marine Park since 1993. As well, Sea Kayak Adventures holds one of the exclusive permits to operate Baja kayak tours on the island of  Espiritu Santo , near La Paz, where we have two boats licensed and permitted to offer one of the world's greatest wildlife experiences, swimming with whale sharks!  In all, we offer more sea kayaking tours and options than any other kayak company in Baja.

As you kayak Baja’s stunning seascape of natural wonder and beauty, you'll wonder why you haven't experienced it sooner. Visit desert islands, snorkel over reefs with over 900 species of brightly-colored fish, for which Jacques Cousteau named the area 'The World’s Aquarium.' Hike an arroyo full of fascinating geology and sleep on white sand beach beneath a star-filled sky.

Choosing the Perfect Baja Kayaking Trip

While all of our Baja sea kayak tour options are great choices, below we've provided a guide to help you find the trip you’d enjoy most.  The fact is you really can’t go wrong choosing a sea kayaking trip in Baja, and many of our guests return several times and try all our itineraries!  In fact, Sea Kayak Adventures offers more different itineraries on a regular basis than any other sea kayak company in Baja.

  • The Season:  We run our Baja kayak tours in the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez) from October to May.  From May to September it’s really hot in Baja, California, and not comfortable for kayaking.
  • La Paz:  If you live in the central or eastern part of the USA or Canada, there are connecting flights directly to La Paz via Mexico City, Guadalajara, and other cities. Or, you can fly to Cabo San Lucas and take a 2 ½ hour shuttle north to La Paz for about $35. If you live in the western USA or Canada, it’s faster, cheaper, and simpler to fly to Cabo San Lucas and transfer 2 ½ hours by shuttle to La Paz for about $35.
  • Loreto:  Loreto has nonstop service from Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines, and from Calgary, Alberta on WestJet.  It’s also possible to cross the border at San Diego using the SkyBridge and get a domestic flight from Tijuana to Loreto on AeroCalafia and Volaris.
  • Length of Trips:  While we love our longer five to ten-day trips, we know that not everyone has that much time.   Thus we do offer three and four-day options.  How much time you have will help you narrow your choices.
  • Difficulty of Trips:  Many of our Baja sea kayaking tours are suitable for beginners or those with very little kayaking experience.  Some are better suited to those with moderate experience.  A few are best for those with previous kayaking experience and fit enough for longer paddling days.
  • Remoteness of Trips:  Trips on Isla Espiritu Santos near La Paz tend to feel less remote than some of our other trips.  The island is quite popular with Baja kayak tours, but also for day trips coming from La Paz to snorkel, swim and lunch on a beach.  Many nights we share our beach with another group.  We are separated, but it’s not the same as having a beach entirely to ourselves.  Trips to the Islands of Loreto tend to be less busy as day trips don’t visit the islands where we kayak.  See the chart below for the trips that provide the highest level of solitude and remoteness.
  • Wildlife:  In the comparison chart you will see an indication of what types of wildlife you are likely to see while kayaking in Baja.  The gray whales are only around on the Pacific Coast from mid-January to mid-April.  Blue whales are most likely to be seen in the Gulf of California during February.  Many other Baja wildlife species are present during our entire kayak season.
  • When to Go:  In the comparison chart below you will note that some trips are offered all season, while others are available only in specific windows.  This is generally determined by weather patterns.  For example, Isla San Jose often has high winds from December through February, so we avoid it during that time frame.

Why Kayak Baja with Sea Kayak Adventures?

Sea Kayak Adventures founders Nancy and Terry began guiding Baja kayak tours in the ‘80s, which means our tour operations are perfected from over 25 years of experience. Our proven expertise kayaking in Baja leads to not only high-quality tours with hand-picked highlights but a finesse of operations that sets us apart from other outfitters. For example:

  • All-inclusive.  We like to make vacation fun and easy for our guests, so just bring a carry-on with your clothing! Kayaking equipment (high-quality fiberglass kayaks, paddles, spray skirts and PFDs), all camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, pillows, sleeping pads, complete kitchen set-up), and snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuits) are included. In addition, we include all transportation to and from meeting points in either Loreto or LaPaz while on tour. No other company includes so much!
  • Best Guides and highest guide-to-guest ratios in the industry.   With 2-3 guides for every tour (6-13 guests max). The vast majority of our guides are Mexican citizens. Many are marine biologists, zoologists, geologists, etc with degrees from Mexican universities.  Others grew up in fishing families and have non-academic expertise that is inspiring. All are certified to high standards of sea kayak guiding including either BCU or ACA certification.  All have Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder.  And finally, all are bilingual, professional, and fun to be with!
  • We leave only footprints.  The Islands of Loreto Bay and Espiritu Santo are protected as a National Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We proudly adhere to “leave no trace” camping ethics when kayaking in Baja and support a number of local marine conservation organizations.
  • Green doesn’t mean lean!  Kayak Baja’s waters and camp in style with top of the line equipment, full catering with gourmet meals freshly prepared from scratch, and optional motorboat support.
  • We emphasize wildlife and natural history.  It really is a kayak adventure in splendor, and our guides are highly educated about the wilderness in which you are immersed. Nature presentations are built into the itinerary.

How do I get to your Baja kayak tours?

Sea Kayak Adventures has bases of operation in both La Paz and Loreto in Baja California Sur.  Loreto boasts a small international airport with direct flights from LAX and Calgary and is easily accessible by bus from other parts of the peninsula, including La Paz and Los Cabos.  La Paz has direct flights from the mainland of Mexico and is easily reached via a 2.5-hour shuttle from Los Cabos airport.   Read about the differences between kayaking in Loreto and La Paz.

Select from a variety of multi-day itineraries, including wilderness camping and sea kayaking in Baja’s blue whale realm of the Sea of Cortez and whale watching tours in the federally protected gray whale lagoons of Magdalena Bay. Our most popular Baja kayak tours combine both areas.

We also offer a number of day tours  to extend your vacation, including:

  • Swimming with Whale Sharks near La Paz.
  • Hiking in the historic mining areas near La Paz
  • Visiting San Javier Mission near Loreto
  • Blue Whale watching near Loreto
  • Skiff and Snorkel Tour to Isla Coronado near Loreto
  • Gray whale watching in Magdalena Bay (offered from both La Paz and Loreto)
  • Snorkeling

LIFE CHANGING WHALE ENCOUNTERS

Perhaps the most extraordinary wildlife encounter on the planet is a visit to San Ignacio Lagoon to meet up close 40-ton Grey Whales and their newborn calves. Grey whale mothers often seek out human interaction as they approach our boats to present their newborn calves to us while encouraging visitors to scratch their heads, back, and baleen as they lounge around our boats. Over the years this behavior has become a regular occurrence only at San Ignacio Lagoon.

This is a relaxing and easy way to get to our very remote whale watching location.

But we want you to know that after 20 years, our staff is highly skilled, deeply committed to giving great vacations and fun to be around. All of our staff has 5, 10 or 20 years or more of tourism and whale watching experience.

Most of the crew was chosen for their friendly, open and approachable personality and attitudes so they could make up for Keith's less open demeanor. Then through years of practice and training and experience on the water they have developed into a great whale watching crew.

Whichever trip you choose, you will be well taken care.

The most frequently asked questions are these:

How close will I get to a whale? Will we get to pet a whale? How many whales will I see? Do you guarantee that I will touch a whale?

Our response to the question about how close we get is to say that 99.5% of our groups from 1994 through 2015 did experience close touching encounters. (that was every group, but one 3 day special air charter group in 2001 and a family in April 2015) Yes, at one time we did have one trip date each year that carried a money back guarantee for 5 years. Nobody else in the world dared match that guarantee nor could they match our unblemished success record.

During all of our trip dates we guarantee that there will be tons of gray whales present inside the whale watching lagoon! After the 1st hour you will not count how many whales you see. It will no longer matter to you.

Since 1994 every person who has traveled with Keith anywhere in the word on a whale watching trip, has seen whales on every whale watch day! (except for one wind blown trip) Since 1996 every 5 & 6 day group Keith has brought to Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Scammon's Lagoon) in January, February and March has had the opportunity to touch a wild whale. No one else, anywhere in the world, can match our record. This page contains information about our various trip schedules. These trips are relatively all inclusive . We travel over the road in Suburbans or vans for our combination gray and blue whale trips. You fly down to Guerrero Negro for our gray whale trips. Combo trips take you to both sides of Baja and put you close to Gray whales and Blue whales and many other species of cetacean. You sleep in clean motel rooms on soft beds or in our Seaside tented lodge that is equipped with comfortable beds, comforters, pillows, robes, gas fired hot water showers and flush toilets. We eat most meals in local restaurants or really terrific meals in our dining tent at the shore. What dates are best? Our brochure tells a lot more but read this page that tells the different types of activity you can expect to see based upon observations in previous seasons. To go for our Gray Whale Watching Tours in Baja you can call us at the above given number or even emails us at the above mentioned email.

Take home a lifetime memory

Coming from San Diego

No need to worry about crossing the border. We take all necessary precautions to make your Valle de Guadalupe wine tour as enjoyable as possible.

Your travel host will find you at the location of your choice and drive you through the beautiful Pacific scenic road. Entering the Valle, we’ll give you an introduction to the wine route and all the essential facts of the region.

We create a customized itinerary for you to have enough time at each location. Feel free to spend more time at particular spots than others. Wine tasting is about enjoying yourself taking in the beautiful scenery in a relaxing way.

Wine tasting

A selection of three wineries previously crafted for the group or the couple will be waiting for us. We’ll taste from three to four young wines at every stop from rose, reds, and whites.

Enjoy the landscape, sip your wine, relax and take beautiful pictures. There will be an opportunity to make a wine cellar tour where we will learn more about the wine process at each winery.

Enjoy the fresh ingredients of the Baja Cuisine in a farm to table experience accompanied by a glass of house wine.

Three course al fresco farm to table dinner with a glass of wine per person. *Please let us know any Food allergy or dietary restrictions to accommodate your needs.
