1. ButcherBox

Here's a thank you email from ButcherBox — a direct-to-consumer food brand specializing in farm-to-table meats.

The subject line promising the power to choose your own free year's meat supply was an enticing offer, making this a must-read email.

ButcherBox effectively communicated thanks, briefly highlighted its offerings, and didn't ask too much of the reader. Additionally, it provided value by offering a discount to the recipient.

Why it works: Ecommerce brands love to send out emails about new products and offers, and what I appreciated about this thank you email was its simplicity.

Butcher Box's thank you letter is an excellent example of positive reinforcement . In the first sentence, the company tells me which action they're thanking me for. This email wasn't pushy or sales-y; the authentic writing style made me smile.

2. Village Meat and Wine

Here's a thank you letter from specialty food company Village Meat and Wine.

Why it works: This letter is sincere — it's not trying to do anything or sell me anything. It's just about cultivating community and appreciation. It also informs customers that there may be a bit of shipment delay thanks to the boost in interest.

Why it works: It's short and to the point. The note shows their appreciation for my registration in two simple sentences. Then, adding a clickable button makes connecting with my peers and fellow challengers super easy.

Here's a thank you letter I received from the National Geographic Society requesting that I become a contributing member:

Why it works: Showing customers exactly where their money goes is an effective way to thank them, especially if they donate to a cause. (Plus, who can resist the thrill of discovery?)

Why it works: In this example, The Floor clarifies that they value their customers and get specific about why: for continuing to support the studio throughout the pandemic. Getting specific about why you appreciate the customer adds a layer of honesty and sincerity to your message.

Here's the snail mail example of customer appreciation that I promised — a thank you letter and gift Kristen Georgette received from Capital One:

Here's the necessary context: Mrs. Georgette made a simple call to Capital One to fix an unwanted charge, striking up a conversation with the call operator.

She shared news of her growing family, and the customer support rep made a note to both fix the situation at hand and make her feel good with a baby gift basket.

This gift probably cost Capital One less than $20 in total but helped Georgette feel the love. A thoughtful and personalized gift and thank you note are delightful to give to customers who feel the company's agents really care.

After you sign up for the Hustle, HubSpot's newsletter, you'll receive this thank you letter.

This thank you email follows all of the steps we listed above. It begins with a friendly greeting, expresses gratitude for your sign-up, and acknowledges our future relationship.

The email also conveys the no-nonsense approach to industry news we'll take through this channel. Then it thanks the reader again before signing off.

Why it works: This email is a great example of a simple thank you letter that can be used for any new user who provides you with their email address. It's short, to the point, and still incorporates a call-to-action and the next point of communication the customer can expect.

After signing up for a newsletter through Taylor Nation, the official Taylor Swift fan network, I received the following thank you letter:

Handwritten thank-you card do’s and don’ts

When sending customers handwritten thank-you cards, follow these tips to ensure your efforts reap the most positive response possible:

Don’t use a red pen! It’s the equivalent of sending a “shouting” email in all caps. Blue or black ink is ideal. But if you’re a purple glitter gel pen kind of person… well, your sparkly message will probably make your customer smile.

Do use note cards or stationery that reflects your business. If you’re a vet clinic, keep it playful with paw-printed cards. If you’re an architectural firm, reflect your image with minimalist, artful cards. A postcard does the trick, too.

Don’t make excuses for your handwriting! If your second-grade teacher wrote “see me” on your handwriting homework, whatever. “Good” penmanship is overrated — as long as your note is legible, that’s what matters. Your handwriting is unique, which makes a personal note feel even more special and “real” to the recipient.

Do respond in a timely fashion. It’s called “snail mail” for a reason, but it’s best not to wait so long that your customer forgets having done the thing you’re thanking them for.

Don’t include anything overly promotional, like coupons or business cards. The point is to convey genuine gratitude, not to promote your business (that happens as a natural side effect). Stickers are A-OK, though.

Do showcase your company’s personality! If smiley faces and emoticons (or cat doodles, or a crayon drawing from your kid) are in line with your brand, by all means, include them.

Do include a little something extra when the situation merits it! Send a token of appreciation along with your note. Depending on the occasion, we send a book, stickers, a T-shirt or even baked goods.

If anyone tries to tell you there’s no way to prove the ROI of thanking your customers, or that sending handwritten thank-you notes “doesn’t scale,” don’t buy it.

Here’s why: The ROI when you thank your customers is inextricably linked to the ROI of word-of-mouth marketing. And when it comes to small- to medium-sized businesses’ toolkits, word-of-mouth marketing is a shiny power drill among screwdrivers.

What’s more, you don’t have to wait for it to happen “organically,” outside your company’s walls — thank-you notes let you cultivate quality word-of-mouth marketing yourself, and for a lower price tag than many other marketing efforts that won’t get you nearly as far.

Thanking your customers generates word-of-mouth marketing

It takes an exceptional product or customer experience to inspire someone to rave to their personal network about it.

One of the lowest-cost but highest-impact ways to prompt your customers to engage in word-of-mouth marketing about your product or service is to send a handwritten thank-you note.

Handwritten thank-you notes are such a rare throwback to old-school customer service because hardly anyone does it anymore. They stand out as a delightful gesture, one that makes people feel special enough to call it out and share with others.

Handwritten thank-you notes work better now than they did 20 years ago for a couple key reasons:

They’ve become rare enough to feel unique and special enough to turn customers into loyal ambassadors

Social media has increased the size of customers’ networks, and with it, the size of the audience who hears about it.

Whereas 20 years ago a customer might have told one or two people how nice it was for their mechanic to send a note following a tune-up, now people will snap a photo and share it with hundreds or thousands of friends and followers on their social outlets of choice.

“It’s not the money that makes these efforts shocking and awesome, it’s the care and creativity involved,” writes Gary Vaynerchuk in The Thank You Economy .

“Right now, there is a fortune in word of mouth that can be created,” he continues, "for companies who nurture relationships in these small but meaningful ways that turn customers into vocal brand advocates across large social media networks."

In other words, your business can’t afford to ignore the ROI of word-of-mouth, and sending handwritten thank-you notes is an inexpensive but highly effective way to trigger word-of-mouth marketing.

Thanking your customers improves retention

Research shows that sending a thank-you note inspires other measurable, positive outcomes as well.

Wufoo is known for sending thank-you cards to customers. Every week, the team takes time to draft, decorate and mail personalized cards, a tradition that dates back to Wufoo’s early days.

And get this: According to Customer Ops team lead Renee Morris, “out of the roughly 800 customers who received handwritten cards from us last year, 50% fewer folks left our product than those who did not receive cards.”

Think about that: Retention rates are a full 50% better among customers who receive a thank-you note.

In another experiment , the staff of Donors Choose sent hand-written thank-yous to half of all recent first-time donors, and they found that 38% of people who received a thank-you note were more likely to give again than those who didn’t receive one.

Thank-you note recipients donate an additional $41 per year on average, translating to more than $3 million in additional donations per year.

Imagine applying that kind of lift to your business. What results would you see if you committed to thanking your customers?

As Robert Cialdini explains in his bestselling book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion , the principle of reciprocity is a powerful motivator.

By nature, we don’t like to feel indebted to others, so if someone gives us something, we’re wired to give back. When customers receive a token of appreciation as heartfelt as a handwritten thank-you note, they feel compelled to return the favor — ideally with repeat business and public advocacy of your product or service.

In addition to providing a high-touch onboarding experience, Thomspon personally writes postcards to people who sign up for trials, sends handwritten thank-you cards and CartStack sticky notes to every customer who converts to a paid plan, and mails holiday cards to every paying customer.

She also practices “monthly random acts of kindness,” where she’ll send chocolates, CartStack swag, or other small but personalized gifts, just because. “We get really nice emails from people about how touched they were by our thoughtfulness,” Thompson says.

At first, CartStack didn’t have a whole lot of empirical evidence to go on — CEO Brett Thoreson was simply impressed by the personal note Zappos sent him along with a purchase of cleats. According to Thompson:

“It’s something he remembers to this day and has told a lot of people about. The inspiration to bring that to his own business was initially sort of a gut feeling.”

Now, however, CartStack has all kinds of data showing its high-touch service efforts are paying off: Over the past year, the company has doubled its MRR and increased conversion rates between 5-6%.

Perhaps more tellingly, 90% of the customer testimonials they’ve collected since launching the thank-you note initiative mention the quality of customer service, compared with 50% of the testimonials collected beforehand.

“It’s an easy thing to do, but a lot of people don’t do it,” Thompson said. “It’s such an easy win, to have a more personal touch and be more human and relational with your customers."

Thompson continues: "So often that personal touch is lost in tech. Because we’re little — we’re bootstrapped — we don’t necessarily have all these resources to advertise or have big flashy ways to stand out. We have to stand out in a small but sincere way.”

TORONTO — No matter how many Travel Agent Day celebrations go by, the need to thank travel advisors for all their hard work and dedication is ever-present.

That’s especially true this year as travel agencies continue to rise to the challenge of still-strong booking levels while dealing with labour shortages.

For some travel agents – and for many, many agency owners and managers – it’s a situation that’s made long days a near-constant.

Meanwhile travel demand continues to keep the phones ringing. That’s a good thing, and though the workload is sizable, Canada’s travel agents are proving again and again that they’re up to the task.

Jamie Milton, co-owner of Uniglobe Carefree Travel, knows all about it. And that’s why she’s letting the travel advisors at her Saskatoon, SK agency know just how important they are, as the industry marks Travel Agent Day 2024.

“On Travel Agent Day, we want to take a moment to thank those special superheroes who work behind the scenes every day, solving problems and ensuring that the wheels of all the trips keep turning, uninterrupted and bump-free!” Milton tells Travelweek.

She adds: “The work that they do often goes unnoticed … and so on Travel Agent Day, more than ever, we want to ensure that our travel advisors are recognized and thanked with an abundance of gratitude for all they do. We want them to know their hard work is seen, appreciated and recognized and that they are valued.”

It was at Uniglobe Carefree Travel – and thanks to travel advisor Colleen Lorenzen – that Travel Agent Day got its start back in 2011. On the first Wednesday of every May, Travel Agent Day is when travel agencies recognize their hard-working team of agents, and encourage other agency managers and owners, and suppliers, to do the same.

Milton sees first-hand the toll that travel’s labour shortage is taking on retailers. Thankfully there’s good news too, as her agency has recently had success with onboarding new recruits.

“I think what our industry is missing is younger, new agents coming into the industry and I think that’s something we, as a whole, need to continue to promote and work on,” says Milton. “When Uniglobe Carefree has been able to hire younger recruits who have taken some travel courses, they do very well and are very eager to learn.”

Like other experienced travel sellers, Milton has concerns about what will happen if the labour shortage isn’t rectified. “We continue to see agents age out or retire from the industry and there aren’t enough new people coming up to replace them. We feel the labour shortage now, but I fear that if we don’t invest in attracting new people to the industry, this will continue to get worse.”

RECORD SALES & TRAVEL TRENDS

Milton’s own experience with the travel boom includes a sense of relief that demand for trips is starting to plateau. “2023 was the year we finally saw travel return to some semblance of normal,” Milton tells Travelweek.

At an agency level, 2023 started off “a bit chaotic” with the full cancellation of Sunwing’s program from Saskatchewan, as well as several significant weather disruptions that underscored the lack of slack in the airline schedules, she says. “This really brought to light that although demand was back to normal levels, the travel ecosystem was not yet ready to handle normal levels. This allowed travel advisors to really showcase their worth to consumers and drive agency bookings over supplier direct bookings and we were well positioned to take advantage of this. In the end, despite the cancellations and disruption at the start, our sales were up almost 50% in 2023 compared to 2022!”

Milton adds that so far in 2024, in the first quarter, her agency’s sales are 50% higher than the first quarter of 2023. “We continue to see a very high volume of leisure bookings and a return of corporate bookings and inquiries to a wide array of destinations.”

Three trends that Milton is watching include once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, destination weddings and other big group trips, and weekend getaways.

“There is still a big emphasis on getting those ‘bucket list’ trips under your belt,” she says. “Consumers still have that feeling of urgency to get those big trips in while they are able to do so. Many clients are taking 2-3 big bucket list trips per year.”

Like many in the industry, Milton says she’s also seeing a big uptick in longer cruises, luxury cruises and world cruises.

“There has also been a big return to destination weddings and larger groups of friends and families travelling together, as well as corporate conferences and incentive groups,” she notes. “Lastly, we are seeing a lot of growth in the good value weekend getaways. This may be a result of everyone being busier again with work and activities, but may also be a response to some economic constraints. There are lots of clients booking for Nashville, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, and so on, for 3-5 day getaways.”

Travelweek asked Milton what she wants most for her team of travel advisors this Travel Agent Day, when it comes to recognition from the agency’s supplier partners. “More than anything, recognition and personal words of thanks go a long way. We love having our suppliers and our clients stop by, call, email or leave reviews with messages of appreciation and thanks.”

Ready to house hunt? It’s a jungle out there: Prepare for a flurry of paperwork, stampedes of buyers competing for the same digs, and other challenges, before you get your hands on those house keys.

We won’t lie: The process can be complex and stressful—especially if you are a first-time buyer. Having a real estate pro by your side can make all the difference.

You might have heard of buyer’s agents, selling agents, listing agents, and so on. You’re a buyer, so what is a buyer’s agent?

True to their name, buyer’s agents help real estate buyers navigate the real estate market; they can also save you tons of time and money on the road to your new home.

Read on to learn how a real estate buyer’s agent can help, and how to find the right one for you.

Buyer’s agent vs. Realtor: Benefits of using a buyer’s agent when buying real estate

“A buyer’s agent will guide you through the home-buying transaction and be at your disposal for any questions or concerns,” says  Shane Wilcox , a Realtor® with Partners Trust. Here are some of the things a buyer’s agent can do:

  • Find the right property. After determining what the clients are looking for and what they can afford, the agent will schedule appointments to tour homes that fit the bill. The agent can also explain the ins and outs of various properties and neighborhoods, to help buyers decide which home is right for them, by explaining the pros and cons of various options.
  • Negotiate the offer. The buyer’s agent will advise clients on an appropriate price to offer and present it to the seller’s agent. “Then they will negotiate on your behalf and write up the contracts for you,” says  Matt Laricy , a Realtor with Americorp Real Estate in Chicago. This is where the agent’s experience in negotiating deals can save you money and help you avoid pitfalls like a fixer-upper that’s more trouble than it’s worth.
  • Recommend other professionals. A buyer’s agent should also be able to refer you to reliable mortgage brokers, real estate attorneys, home inspectors, movers, and other real estate professionals. This can also help expedite each step of the process and move you to a successful real estate sale all the faster.
  • Help overcome setbacks.  If the home inspector’s report or appraisal brings new issues to light, a buyer’s agent can advise you on how to proceed with the transaction, and then act as a buffer between you and the sellers or their broker. If negotiations become heated or hostile, it’s extremely helpful to have an experienced professional keeping calm and offering productive solutions.

Buyer’s agent vs. listing agent: What’s the difference?

Buyer’s agents are legally bound to help buyers, whereas listing agents—the real estate agent representing the home listing—have a fiduciary duty to the home seller.

“That’s why it’s in your best interest as a buyer to get an agent who is there to represent you,” explains Alex Cortez , a Realtor with Wailea Village Properties in Kihei, HI.

“Think about it this way: If you were getting sued, would you hire the same attorney as the person suing you? Of course not. You need someone who will diligently fight for your interests and rights.”

Let’s say, for instance, you walked up to the listing agent at an open house. You might gush about how you love the home and want to buy it, but add that you will need to move soon—because you’re expecting your second child and need to decorate the nursery, pronto, or because the lease on your rental is up in a couple of months.

A seller’s agent could then use this information against you by informing the sellers that your clock is ticking, so they shouldn’t budge too much on their asking price—if at all.

Yet make this same confession to the buyer’s agent you’re working with, and it’s all fine—this professional would know to keep this info private from sellers (and their agents), so it can’t be used against you.

Some states, recognizing this problem, required a disclosure of dual agency when a broker represents both sides of a real estate transaction.

However, you may still not be comfortable after signing an agreement saying you know someone is a double agent. You might want to hire an agent who is not representing the owner, and who is looking out for your best interests.

How to find a buyer’s agent

A good buyer’s agent can ease your way to homeownership—and a bad one can result in a bumpy ride.

You should not just take the first buyer’s agent you meet (as two-thirds of home buyers do), or blindly accept the recommendation of a friend (more than half do this). Instead, it’s best to interview at least three agents and ask them a few questions, including the following:

  • What neighborhoods do you specialize in? Real estate requires local expertise, so you should find an agent who’s extremely familiar with the areas you’re interested in.
  • What’s your schedule and availability? Part-time real estate agents who are committed can do a fine job, but if the house of your dreams pops up or you encounter last-minute closing snafus, you want an agent who will be readily reachable.
  • How long have you been a real estate agent? You ideally want someone with a couple of years of experience, and a proven track record of selling homes.

The agent/buyer contract

Once you agree to work with someone, you will have to sign a contract called an “exclusive buyer agency agreement,” outlining the agent’s services and compensation (more on that next).

This contract also means that this person will be your sole representative and that you won’t work with other buyer’s agents.

Who covers the buyer’s agent commission

Home buyers don’t need to worry about the expense of hiring a buyer’s agent. Why? Because the seller pays the commission for both the seller’s and buyer’s agents.
