It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

Liked the excellent United crew, the food selection, the comfortable cabin and the excellent movie and tv shows selection. The interface on the screen is also excellent and gives the option to let the crew know to wake you up for meals, or not. I disliked the onboarding experience at the Brussels airport. The process is convoluted and was not explained to any passengers. I also don't understand why thee is an additional security screening when getting off the plane from Africa, when there was none when getting off the plane from the US.

Our flight from Denver to Honolulu was delayed by close to 4 hrs. The only concession that was offered was a $15 food voucher to be used at the airport. They texted the vouchers after we boarded so there was now way to use them.the food they did serve was cold. I can’t recommend this airline.

The 787 Dreamliner was probably the smoothest aircraft I have ever flown on. Made for a lovely trip

The weather caused a delayed but I was impressed how United did everything they could to try to get us out which included bussing us to the plane doing a Hardstand and bringing us to the plane since the fog was too thick to tow the plane from the overnight stay in the cargo area.

There was a 6 hr delay and they kept saying we would board soon, keeping us close the gate... I could have relaxed someplace instead of hovering around the gate.

More than one hour detail with no explanation and no compensation

During the flight there was a medical emergency. We were diverted. Of course I'm thankful they cared for the health of that passenger, but they did a poor job of communicating with the rest of us passengers. In the end we arrived at our destination several hours late, with no direction of how to rebook missed connecting flights. It all worked out in the end. Those of us that needed accommodations were put up in a hotel by Lufthansa until we could make it to our final destination. But it was United Airlines Personnel who really helped us navigate the process.

Seats on the A320 were more comfortable than the A330 I took from RSW to Frankfurt

There was a boarding delay in Almaty. Comfort and food was average.

The passenger next to me Goran Goranov (elderly man in his 70s on his way to visit his children and grandchildren in Washington, DC) dropped his neck support pillow while boarding - none of the ground crew helped him. He subsequently lost his green card somewhere on the plane or on his way to the other airplane. I hope he found it. I am worried about him. His son had requested an agent to wait for him at the gate - nobody was there when Mr. Goranov came out of the plane Sofia- Frankfurt. Other passengers had to help him get to the next gate for Washington, DC. I hope Mr. Goranov found his Green card and got safely to Washington, DC to spend time with his family during the holiday season.

The flight attendants were just awesome. Friendly, professional, timely, etc.

It is standard with Ryanair, as FF with Ryanair you dont expect too much, and Ryanair never disappoints. At least it is reliable.

Flight with Ryanair more than 1,5 hours are awful... No space between seats, absolutely uncomfortable stay.

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Scam, and appalling from Ryanair.

Easy process and good flight experience The food good be better

On time, no announcement all along the flight, you can rest.

You get what you pay for with RyanAir. This was a €60 round trip from Stockholm and every piece of it was just excruciating, from the plane being delayed by more than an hour, to having to stand out on the tarmac in the darkness at 3C and wind to wait for the plane to disembark its previous flight (why they do this is just cruel), to the crew keeping the lights on the entire flight despite it being so late so they could walk through the aisles and try to sell things. I always say “never again!” after flying RyanAir, but somehow end up getting lured by the prices…

This was an American Airlines flight. The crew were very unhappy and quite grumpy. Abrupt to the point of being rude. The food was dreadful. Indeed the breakfast was in edible. I will avoid AA at all costs in the future.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.

When you pay for seat selection but there website doesn't allow you to check in, they shouldn't force you to a middle seat where both random people around you invade your seat

Worst trans-Atlantic flight in years! The seats were incredibly tight, both in width and depth. The back selection was so cold, it was like traveling in a refrigerator. Although I had an entire row, the seat arms would not go up, so I could not take advantage of it to sleep. However, the crew was smiling and helpful and really seemed to enjoy their jobs. The food was the worst I have ever experienced on any flight. The PA system blasts announcements to the point of hurting my ears when using the audiovisual equipment. Not safe or sat. Also, I did not like the bait and switch tactic. I put in a search with one bag and the other flights had put that into their price, but BA did not and made me pay extra for it which would have made the price comparable to others. Also, even at check in there was no “choice” of seat, unless you paid extra for it even in the same row. No other airline I have been on does this. Once check in begins, normally, you can choose any unoccupied seat in your category. These tactics and the lack of comfort means I will never fly BA again.

It was good but it got bad when they cancelled my flight to rochester and couldn’t get me in any flight even for the next day they said i will be a standby.

No luggage at end of flight… no coffee with soggy breakfast flatbread (I think) for breakfast! Stewardess did not seem to care, asked her to take remainder of evening meal trash… she never came back for it. Awkward when trying to get up in confined space and have to get around tray that is down!

We were blessed to have an upgrade and it was so nice! The extra room, footrest, better food and headphones you can actually hear the entertainment on. Sure made the long journey much better! For some reason we had to wait a long time for our checked baggage. Over a half hour. Otherwise the trip was perfect

British Airways is consistently fine, in terms of the on-flight service. Heathrow Terminal 5 can be difficult, though that is probably not BA's fault. On the other hand, British Airways' service has routinely been difficult for me the past few years. Indeed, it is a reason why I am considering changing carriers.

I think the casual disregard for booking a seat for my child was pretty awful. Terrible airline, terrible attitude.

Why it's special

If you're paying 60,000-plus miles for a one-way business-class flight to Europe, you're not getting ripped off. That's the going rate for a fancy lie-flat seat across the Atlantic.

However, with Etihad miles you can fly on partner Brussels Airlines and score seven-plus hours in a seat like this for 44,000 miles one way. This seat regularly sells for more than $3,000 -- giving you a value of 6.8 cents per mile. TPG valuations peg Etihad miles at 1.4 cents each, on average -- meaning this sweet spot offers a value nearly 5 times higher than usual!

The same exact seat when using other airline currencies would cost:

• 75,000 United MileagePlus miles .
• 63,000 Avianca miles .
• 60,000 Air Canada Aeroplan points .

You'll save between 16,000 and 31,000 rewards each way (between 32,000 and 62,000 miles round-trip) over common Star Alliance airline programs by booking with non-Star Alliance partner Etihad (yes, there are a few exceptions).

Here's the caveat, though: You can only find this price for flights to Brussels Airport (BRU) from either New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD). In other words, this is a cheap way to cross the ocean in style, but you'll likely have to take another flight to your actual destination once you reach the European continent. Intra-Europe flights are usually inexpensive, so this shouldn't be an issue.

How to book this award

You cannot book these seats online with Etihad -- nor can you locate available seats on the Etihad website. The best way to find seats is through the United Airlines website.

Step 1: Enter your travel information

Head to the United Airlines website and enter your desired dates and airports. Remember, the only flights that qualify for this deal are the following nonstop routes on Brussels Airlines:

• New York (JFK) to Brussels (BRU).
• Washington (IAD) to Brussels (BRU).

In the below example, I've stipulated that I want to see business-class flights only.

Step 2: Open the 30-day calendar

Your desired date may not have Brussels Airlines availability. Seats aren't impossible to find, but they're less common than some other United partners.

On the results page, select the 30-day calendar. You'll now see the lowest business-class awards for each day in a digestible format.

Step 3: Uncheck the "With stops" box below the calendar

Brussels Airlines flies nonstop between Brussels and Washington. We can therefore eliminate all flights that have a connection, because we know those aren't Brussels Airlines.

To do this, locate the tiny box under the calendar that reads "With stops" and uncheck it.

Step 4: Click on dates that show 75,000 miles

The calendar now shows only nonstop business-class flights between Washington and Brussels. To find available business-class flights on Brussels, look for dates pricing out at 75,000 miles.

By clicking on one of these dates, you can see in the search results at the bottom of the page that there are business-class seats available, "Operated By Brussels Airlines."

Step 5: Call Etihad to reserve your flight

Note the flight details such as date, departure/arrival time and number of the flight you found on United. Then, call Etihad at 877-690-0767 and relay the flight information carefully to them.

Etihad phone agents are a bit notorious for not being very good at booking partner award flights. If the agent can't see the flights you've found, respectfully end the call and call back to get another agent.

How to earn miles for this award

As previously mentioned, Etihad Guest miles are easy to earn, as Etihad partners with Amex Membership Rewards , Capital One miles  and Citi ThankYou Rewards . You can transfer these rewards instantly at a 1:1 ratio.

There are sometimes even transfer bonuses to Etihad, which would make this already cheap sweet deal even cheaper.

Bottom line

The ability to book a multi-thousand dollar lie-flat seat to Europe for just 44,000 miles is one of the best airline sweet spots in the points and miles world. And you can book it with points you might already have.

The only problem is that your flight must be from either JFK or IAD. If you don't live near one of these airports, you'll have to fly there first to catch your dirt-cheap business-class flight.
