You may recognize some of the more popular brands such as X-Pole, Lupit Pole, and MegaBrand to name a few that are included in our review. We believe brand names are more reliable and offer better products and services than no-name poles.

Whether you are a beginner and looking for a starter pole or someone who wants to upgrade to a more professional pole dancing pole, we have something for everyone.

The following is a list of the different types of dance poles available to you for your specific needs. Depending on your individual preferences, you may want to evaluate each type to help you make a more informed decision when considering a dancing pole for your apartment or home.

#1 Removable & Portable Dance Poles

Removable and portable dance poles are a great alternative to permanent dance poles. They are quick and easy to install, and some come with carrying case or bag for easy transport on the go.

We have found some top quality poles that are not only very sturdy poles but are also very reliable and safe to use. Just be wary of cheap poles. Sometimes spending a little more will cost you much less down the road and offer you a much safer workout routine and peace of mind.

#2 Permanent Dance Poles

Permanent dance poles for home use have their advantages and disadvantages. When installed properly the permanent dance pole will have the strongest hold and offer the most stability as opposed to the portable dance poles.

The disadvantage, however, is that once it has been installed, it is there for good. So if this is the option you decide to take, make sure you get the location right the first time.

#3 Static & Spinning Dancing Poles

Both stationary and spinning dance poles serve different functions and are designed for different purposes and effects. The stationary pole will literally support hundreds of moves and creative routines, but also offers more stability and control. The static pole is ideal for beginners but also benefits professionals when learning new routines that require more attention and controlled moves.

Using a spinning dance pole can work miracles and transform an ordinary move into a work of art. A spinning pole is a great way to perform fancy spirals, fast spins, and twisted combos. Momentum and complex moves when combined with the proper trajectory can make a simple move look absolutely amazing.

Most newer poles are designed with both options in one pole. By simply making a small adjustment at the base of the pole, it is now possible to switch from static to spinning with ease.

pole dancing classes

Dance poles come in different sizes. This includes pole length and pole width. It is also important to know how adjustable your pole is in order to fit your particular apartment ceiling height or ceiling angle.

Poles come in three width sizes: 40mm, 45mm, and 50mm. The industry standard is 45mm. This is the size you would find in most clubs and dance studios. If you have a smaller grip than most, then you may want to opt for a 40mm.

It is also important to know the extension range of your pole so it will fit the height of your ceiling. Another important feature to consider is the maximum weight capacity. This is the maximum weight a pole will safely support. We have provided these features below for each pole in an easy to read fashion to help you quickly located what you’re looking for in a dance pole.

Before you move on to the review, I invite you to watch this truly spectacular pole dancing video you don’t want to miss performed by Karo Swen. She takes pole dancing to a whole new level and makes it a true art form. Her pole dancing performance is highly inspirational. Enjoy.

The maximum load for this pole is 440lbs; enough to support even the toughest of dance routines.

The perfect pole for beginners who want to discover the art of pole dancing as a sport or entertainment. This pole is the most affordable at just under $100 at the time of this review.

Screw together high precision joints offer great stability and smooth operation. An adjustable screw at the base of the pole will switch the pole from static to spinning if you so desire.

For safety and pole stability, the AW has been designed with an extra-wide pole support dome which helps spread the load evenly on the ceiling and includes an additional angular stability lock.

Furthermore, this design comes with an articulating base for angular adjustments to help fit uneven floors. The base also has soft rubber so you can safely use it on carpet and hardwood floors.

With all these great features, I can see how the reviews I have read for this pole are so positive.

This pole has pretty much all the same features of the AW pole but also comes with an extra 250mm extension and is height adjustable from a minimum of 7.4’ up to 9.3’ with extensions.

Great quality at a very affordable price!

We have therefore made the MegaBrand our 2nd best dance pole for apartment and home use.

It is important to note that as with the AW pole, the height adjuster with flanges is already installed into the main pole before shipping.

Always make sure to read installation instructions, or searching for installation videos for the MegaBrand poles on YouTube can also be very helpful.

  • 45mm Removable Portable Dance Pole
  • Height Extendable: 7.4’ to 9.3’
  • Included extensions: 125mm & 2x 250mm

#4 X-Dance Portable Dance Pole

#5 Yaheetech Fitness Pole

Reviews for the Yaheetech Dance Pole are very positive overall with users expressing how pleased they are with how sturdy this pole is for such a bargain price.

The Yaheetech dance and fitness pole is made with 2.2mm thickened pipe and threaded solid joints which greatly improves the overall stability of this pole.

This pole also includes a silicone ring on both the dome and base plate to help protect your ceiling and floor from damages.

Known to be very sturdy yet inexpensive.

Do note that this pole does start at a minimum ceiling height of 7.7 feet. Somewhat taller than most poles in this review. So if your ceiling is lower than 7.7 feet, this pole will not fit your room. Furthermore, the maximum height is 9 feet and additional pole extensions cannot be bought separately (only includes the 125mm and 250mm extensions).

  • Height Extendable: 7.7’ to 9’ (92.5” to 108”)
  • No Additional height extensions available to buy separately

So you’ve decided pole dancing is right up your alley and you’d like to take a more aggressive path. What better way to get your sweat on than by pole dancing with real people at a dance studio. Due to its increasing popularity in recent years, the pole dancing sport has become very well accepted in the many dance studios across the country.

In my opinion, yelp.com is one of the best ways to find dance studios in your area offering pole dancing lessons.

I personally did a search for “pole dancing classes” in my city and surrounding area and the results showed over ten studios with a 4 to 5-star rating offering classes.

Be aware, pole dancing classes will vary in cost depending on various conditions. I have noticed prices higher in large cities, but cheaper as you distance yourself from these larger cities. Private lessons are more expensive than group lessons. Private lessons can cost between $80 to $120 per hour.

Group lessons are much lower and range from $30 to $60 per hour on average. The best deals are usually monthly membership deals, where 9 or so lessons for the month equate to about $15 to $20 per hour. And if your lucky, Groupon deals can knock some offers down by another 50%.

  • Chic & Functional Gym Bags with Shoe Compartments

All I can say is that many of these dance studios can be very creative when it comes to making a deal.

Position under a stud or support beam

Always make sure to position your dance pole directly under or behind a stud. This is a wooden beam that is usually hidden above your ceiling drywall and that you can easily locate with a stud finder. This gives you the necessary support to tighten your pole to the intensity required for a sturdy hold.

Pole Leveling

Another very important factor to consider when installing your pole so it stays in place and keeps a sturdy hold is to level the pole. By using a level you can make sure your pole is perfectly straight. Make sure your pole is level from all sides and not just one side. This will ensure your pole has the best hold when tightening the pole and prevent wobble when spinning.

Slippery Poles

Most new poles are more slippery than older poles that have been used for a longer period of time. Until your pole has gone through a burn-in period try using gloves or a non-slip lotion or chalk grip for dance poles.

Removable/Portable Dance Poles

Removable dance poles are simply poles that you can easily install without using screws. These poles use tension to keep the poles in place and typically take about 10 and 20 minutes for the initial installation

Minimum Pole Size

The most important factor to consider before purchasing a new pole is the minimum height requirement. You can mostly adjust a pole up in height but never below its minimum height. So if a pole is 7’ to 9’ length extendable with height adjusters, you can NOT go below 7’. You can, however, go higher than 9’ by purchasing additional adjusters when available by that particular company.

Sloped or Angled Ceiling

Not all dance poles will fit angled ceilings. If your home or apartment has angled or sloped ceilings, either make sure your pole comes with that adjustment or find out if that company offers optional angle/slope attachments.

Periodically Re-tighten Screws

It is a good idea to re-tighten screws every so often or before each workout. If you are using the static mode, for example, it would be a good idea to double-check that the screw(s) have not loosened from your last workout routine and suddenly switch on you mid-routine.

woman on dance pole sweating

A lot has changed in the pole dancing industry. It has moved from men’s entertainment venues to now being offered in classes at many gyms and dance studios across the country. Above all, with the invention of the internet and wifi, we can instantly bring pole dancing to your home on your computer, smartphone, and even big-screen smart TVs.

Pole dancing is great for strengthening muscles and cardio exercise, and thus can definitely help you lose weight. Besides losing weight, it also helps to tone your whole body and increase flexibility and coordination.

Dance pole routines require extreme core muscle activation. A lot of upper and lower body strength is also required when pulling your own body weight on a dance pole. Not to forget a lot of up and down squat movements that work your legs and buttocks.

A typical session of pole dancing can burn from 300 to 500 calories or more. This can vary depending on your exercise intensity level and how long you perform your routines.

Pole dancing as with any other sport or physical activity has its risks. But when performed correctly and when taking precautions pole dancing can be quite safe. Some of the more advanced moves can certainly cause injury if performed improperly. If you are attempting this on your own, we always suggest starting with beginner level exercises and slowly working your way up.

With some of the more advanced movements such as the hanging and spinning elements, there can be risks of bruising and skin burns. This, however, is mostly attributed to poor technique and inexperience.

To reduce the risk of injury when learning more advanced moves, I would suggest using a dance pole crash mat. This is especially helpful for beginners learning to perform some of the more advanced upsidedown hanging and spinning techniques for the first time.

Therefore, may I suggest investing in a pole dancing foldable crash mat that is at least 2 to 4 inches thick and 5 feet in diameter. These mats are easily removed from under the pole when you are ready to perform your regular dance pole workout routines.

New poles can be quite slippery and need some break-in time before they are more manageable and easier to use. In the meantime, you can use some anti-slip gripping solution or pole dancing gloves to prevent any slipping.

Pole Dancing Sport

Since you’re performing your exercise routines at home you could wear just about anything your heart desires. But for most of you, I would suggest wearing something comfortable. Wearing something loose or something that stretches easily such as leggings, or even shorts and a t-shirt would be fine.

For footwear, you could either go barefoot or wear running shoes or even just socks. Anything you feel comfortable wearing.

If you are still questioning whether or not pole dancing can be used as a form of exercise to get physically fit, then listen up. Pole dancing may actually be an Olympic event in the not too distant future.

In order for an event to be accepted and included in the World Olympics, it must first be classified as a professional sport by the Global Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF). Thanks to Katie Coates, who campaigned for over 11 years, pole dancing is now officially considered a professional sport.

For those who may not know, Katie Coates has been the president of the International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF) since 2009. The IPSF held its first world championships in 2012, which coincidentally was the same year of the World Olympics held in London.

We may still be a few years away from seeing pole dancing as an Olympic event, but we still can thank Katie for the International Pole Sports Federation which is held every year.

Pole dancing is not only fun but also a great way to practice your pole dancing routines, keep your body flexible, stay fit, increase your body strength, and lose some extra weight.

In today’s review, we have shared with you some of the 5 best dance poles for apartment and home use. All of our listed poles offer dual modes so you can easily switch from static to spinning dance pole with a simple screw adjustment.

We hope this article has provided you with some helpful information on choosing the best dance pole for your home or apartment or at least given you some useful tips to take along the way.

X-Pole X-Stage Lite Review

x-stage lite review

If you’re looking for a portable, lightweight freestanding pole, the X-Stage Lite is a great option. It’s easy to set up and take down, and it’s durable plus it’s a lot of fun. You can use it for practicing at home, or take it with you to performances.

In this X-Stage Lite review, we’ll take a closer look at the features and benefits of the pole, as well as the pros and cons.

Features And Benefits Of The X-Stage Lite

Let’s start off the review by looking at the features of the X-Stage Lite and what the benefits of these features are for the users.

Before we get into the details, If you want to know the difference between the lite and the original pole, check out the X-Stage vs X-Stage Lite post.

Portability

The X-stage series is DESIGNED to be carried around with you. Portability is one of the most important features of the X-Stage Lite.

x stage portable

The pole only weighs 20 KG which makes it one of the LIGHTEST freestanding poles. It is just 2 KG heavier than most of the ceiling fitted poles like the XPERT PRO . The pole also comes with a nice carrying case making it easy to transport plus you don’t need to purchase anything to carry it around.

Because it is lightweight, it is so much easier and convenient to travel with, especially if you plan on taking it with you to performances or practice. The portability and weight of the pole is a very nice feature.

Easy to Setup

Just like all other X-Pole poles, setting it up is a breeze . You can have it up in less than 15 minutes and taking it down doesn’t take much time either.

xstage lite is portable

The pole also comes with an instruction manual and there are plenty of step by step demo videos out there on assembling and setting up the pole. You can probably set it up yourself, and with some practice you will be able to do it a lot faster.

However be careful when you are installing it, misaligning panels is dangerous and could lead to serious injuries.

While the X-Stage series is not very stable compared to other fixed poles, it is safe enough and will not flip over no matter what pole move you do. However X-pole recommends no more than 150KG of weight on the pole, so you might not be able to perform doubles sometimes if the dancers are heavier.

x stage lite design

You will find the pole a bit wobbly at first as with all free standing poles, but with time you’ll get used to it and it will give you peace of mind.

If you are still not convinced it’s stable enough, there are spokes on the bottom and X-pole provides weight plates or trays. You can keep adding these until you feel it’s stable enough for you.

Quick tip if you still find it wobbly – hold a few simple moves longer and then stand slowly for a couple of revolutions.

Spinning And Static Modes

Like most X-Pole, it is possible to switch between spinning and static modes making it ideal for both beginners to practise basic moves and professional dancers for more advanced moves.

The X Stage Lite is a bit more expensive than most other normal poles but is the same as the original X-Stage. The Brass and Silicone finishes tend to be more expensive than the other finishes.

It would cost somewhere between – $750 – $900

The X-Stage Lite looks great and is made of sturdy materials, so you can be confident that it will hold up even under heavy use. Plus the podium is so much shorter that it makes transitions and floowork very easy.

The X-Stage is about 10.5ft tall when assembled and it requires a ceiling height of 3.2m (10.5′) or higher. However X-pole does offer extensions to clear lower ceilings of 7’, 8’ and 9’ ft.

The pole is available in the usual finishes of Brass, Chrome, Powder Coat Black, Powder Coat Pink, Powder Coat White, Silicone Black, Silicone Pink, Stainless Steel.

The Brass finish has a better grip and is more rust resistant while the stainless steel is perfect for humid weather. The chrome finish is clean and easiest to maintain.

Pros and Cons Of The X-Stage Lite

So, what are the pros and cons of the X-Pole X-Stage Lite? Here’s a quick breakdown followed by a more detailed look.

Let’s start with the pros. First of all, it’s really easy to set up and take down. You just unscrew, separate them and pop it in the carrying bag, and you’re good to go!

It’s also really lightweight, which is great if you’re doing a lot of traveling. Plus, it’s surprisingly sturdy for how light it is, which is a definite plus.

Now for the cons. Unfortunately, the X-Pole X-Stage Lite may feel wobbly at first and is expensive. And while it is stable, it’s not as stable as some of the other poles on the market.

The panels are simply powder coated and if you plan on using the pole outside, the coating may come off and start to rust. But if you are careful enough to not chip away the paint, this won’t be a problem.

stage lite panel

So there you have it—the pros and cons of the X-Pole X-Stage Lite. Despite these small downsides, I still think it is a great option for anyone looking for a quality freestanding pole.

Where To Buy The X-Stage Lite?

We recommend buying it online from X-poles official store or you can buy through amazon as well.

However be careful of fakes if you are buying from Craigslist or eBay

OULAIZ Dancing Pole for Beginner and Professional Dancers

This dance pole is perfect if you want a more permanent and stable pole for use in your home. It has both spin and static modes, so you can use it in whatever mode you like. One of the complaints that lots of people have with dancing poles is how loud they are in spin mode, but this pole is pretty quiet when it’s spinning. There is also no gap between the different sections of the pole, which makes it less likely that you will injure yourself when you’re dancing on it.

It is 45mm wide, which is the same width as professional dancing poles, so it should match perfectly with the pole that you use in class. It can fit a ceiling up to 9 feet tall. Sizing the pole to your room can get a little tricky, so the instructions helpfully provide a guide showing which sections of pole you should use depending on the height of your ceiling.

Main features:

  • Spin and static modes
  • Height – adjustable up to 9ft
  • Maximum weight – 440lbs
  • No gap between pole sections
  • Protection for ceiling and floor

SereneLife Professional Upgrade Spinning Dance Pole

The thing that really stands out about this dance pole is the quality of the workmanship. It is made of solid steel, which means that it won’t rust. This is a really important feature for dance poles because any flakiness is a tiny sharp edge that your skin could get caught on, which can cut you. It also has high precision joints that are as close to being completely flush as possible, further reducing the chance of you catching your skin on the pole. This is also a dance pole that can be set to static or spinning, meaning that you can use it whatever your ability level or pole dancing style. It can hold a whopping 617 lbs of weight, so you never need to worry about it falling down while you’re using it.

It can fit a room 6.7-9 feet high and you can change the pole and extenders around to fit your room. You can also buy extra extenders if your room is higher than 9 feet. There is no need to screw anything into your ceiling, and there is no special ceiling device, so it can be taken down again without leaving a mark. It has a silicone ring at the bottom which will prevent the pole from damaging your floors.

  • Made of stainless steel
  • Height – 6.7ft to 9ft
  • Maximum weight – 617lbs
  • Silicone base
  • Held in place by pressure (no screws)

Pro-Fit Professional Portable Spinning Dance Pole

If portability is a must for you, then this dance pole is a great option. It doesn’t have the weight-bearing capabilities of some of the heavier poles, with a maximum of 250 lbs, but it makes up for it with how easy it is to install, uninstall, and transport. Some people need to be able to take their poles with them, and you don’t want to be spending hours moving the pole around every time.

It can fit a ceiling height of up to 9 feet and with additional extenders, this can go up to 10 feet. It is super easy to disassemble and it even comes with a handy carry bag for taking it with you wherever you need to go. It is also lightweight which means that carrying it around isn’t too much of a hassle.

This is a 45 mm standard size dancing pole that can be set to spin or static mode and it even comes with a fun LED light that can be set to “stay on” or “light show” for when you want to perform. And if you have a party at home with your pole there, it is almost certain that those LED lights will be coming on and your guests will have some fun!

  • Height – 7.6ft – 9ft
  • Width – 45mm
  • Maximum weight – 250lbs
  • Extensions available to take it up to 10ft
  • Spin and static mode
  • Lightweight
  • Carry bag included

If you’re looking for a professional-grade durable and hard-wearing pole, then Lupit Pole has lots of great options. They are a dedicated pole dance and aerial sports company that pride themselves on making high-quality professional pole dance and aerial sports equipment and accessories.

All of the Lupit Pole dance poles have a similar design that incorporates some key details to make the pole as durable as possible. They are all multi-piece but use fewer extensions to make them more stable. This is because there are fewer weak points on the pole that could potentially bend or break.

You don’t need to drill to fix the pole into your apartment or house, so you don’t need to worry about damaging your floor or ceiling. They can all also be set to static or spinning depending on what type of dancing you want to do. The Lupit Pole dance pole is as smooth as possible with a cover that fits over the lower joints. This is important in a dance pole because if there is a gap that you could catch a part of your body on, there is a potential that you could get injured quite easily.

The dance poles also have quadruple ball bearings to help with topspin, safety block nuts to reduce the chance of them loosening, and an improved joint system and upgraded bearing systems to help improve the spin. On top of this, there is an upper disc flex system. This system helps to absorb the bending force that happens when you are swinging on the pole to better distribute it evenly along the pole. This reduces the chance of the pole warping, bending, or breaking.

The basic kits for the Lupit Pole dance poles have a height of 2300mm – 2800mm, but you can buy an additional extension kit to increase the height to 3300mm. They come in a variety of thicknesses and materials so you can make the perfect choice for yourself.

Lupit Pole Professional Dance Pole for Home 45mm Stainless Steel

This pole is the thicker style of 45mm, which is standard in America and the UK. It can be more difficult to do hand grips if you have smaller hands but it does make it easier to perform leg grips. And if you will be using other poles outside the home, in a competition, or at a studio, then some people do find it easier to practice on a standard thickness pole at home as well.

This pole is made of stainless steel, which is hypoallergenic and very strong. The stainless steel is polished to give a highly smooth surface. This smoothness makes it easier to perform more advanced tricks but it can be more difficult for complete beginners to get enough of a grip on the pole. With that being said, there are lots of beginners who learn on a stainless steel pole and who excel after getting over the initial learning curve.

Lupit Pole Professional Dance Pole 42mm Stainless Steel

This is the same as the previous stainless steel dance pole except that it is a thinner design. Thinner poles can be easier for complete beginners to learn on, especially if you have a smaller hand span, so this pole will be perfect if you have smaller hands and want to practice pole dancing at home while able to get a decent grip on the pole.

Lupit Pole Professional Dance Pole for Home 45mm Chrome

This is a thicker pole and it is made of chrome instead of stainless steel. Chrome has the same shiny look like stainless steel but without the slipperiness. The inner pole is made from steel that is then coated in chrome which gives it a mirrored shiny look. Chrome is often a concern for nickel-allergy sufferers, but the chrome on this pole is nickel-free so you don’t need to worry about that.

The benefit of a chrome pole over a stainless steel pole is that it is more grippy. This makes it much easier for beginners and those with more slippery hands or weaker hand strength to keep their grip on the pole. It can make it more difficult to do more advanced pole dance moves because you can’t slide around the pole as easily, but chrome is a great option for most people.

Lupit Pole Professional Dance Pole for Home 45mm Powder Coated

Powder-coating takes a pole to another level of grippiness beyond the chrome coating. A powder-coated pole doesn’t have the smooth surface that even a chrome-coated pole has so your hands are very, very unlikely to slip. That makes this pole perfect for complete beginners who don’t have the hand strength to grip onto a stainless steel or chrome pole as well as for dancers that have trouble with slippery hands. Its black finish also looks a little bit different from normal poles so will give your dancing area a unique look.

Pole dancing is a style of dance and fitness that requires, at the very least, the use of a pole. Even though you can definitely pole dance without them, it will make your pole dance life a lot easier if you also grab yourself some useful equipment and accessories.

Dance Pole Crash Mats

Pole dancing is a high-energy and high-impact sport. You will be getting both speed and height when you dance on the pole and, at some point, you will fall off. Giving yourself a soft landing can help to avoid some painful and unsightly bruises after your practice. Dance pole crash mats are cleverly designed to leave no space around your pole where you could hit the floor directly. They tend to be circular and come in sections, with a hole cut out in the middle for your pole to be placed into.

Pole Dancing Crash Mat from LUPIT POLE

This dance pole crash mat is 4’11” in diameter and 4.7″ in thickness and it can be used with dance poles of any thickness. If you have a dance pole at home, it will definitely be compatible with this mat. It is made from EPE (expanded polyethylen) covered with vegan leather and anti-slip fabric at the bottom. It is designed to be durable and it comes in four sections that can be placed around your pole. It also comes with built-in handles so you can bring your crash mate with you wherever you are going to be dancing.

Pole Tribe Pole Dance Mats

Pole Tribe has a great reputation for quality. These dance pole crash mats are 3.6 inches thick and 5 feet in diameter and they come in black, violet, and sea blue. The extra thickness will give you a soft landing and the diameter will help to make sure that you won’t slip off the edges if you do happen to fall. They will fit most standard poles with an extra bit of room for the pole to spin. They are also easy to fold and can be taken with you wherever you go.

Pole Tribe have tested their crash mats and found that they are stiletto-proof, which is probably something that most people wouldn’t even have thought of but that is vital when it comes to pole dancing. Stilettos can be extremely sharp and you will be spending a lot of time stepping or jumping on the crash mat while you dance, so if it isn’t strong enough to withstand a stiletto heel, it isn’t going to last.

Grip Accessories

The key to pole dancing is being able to grip the pole. Of course, with practice, you should be able to do this with ease. But when you’re first starting out, it can be helpful to grab yourself some accessories that will give you a better chance of being able to grip onto the pole every time. And even if you aren’t just starting out, grip accessories can help you get a good handle on the pole so that you can concentrate on executing your tricks.

Mighty Grip Pole Dance Full Tacky Knee Climbing Pads

These climbing knee pads are great because they have padding to help protect your knees if you do happen to fall off the pole but they are also designed to aid you in gripping onto the pole in the first place. They have an open back to help you bend you get enough contact with the pole and they have tack strips that are separated out into sections so that they move with your knee.

They are thin and comfortable and can be easily worn for both floor work and pole work so you don’t need to worry about them being bulky and in the way at any point in your routine.

Mighty Grip Pole Dancing Gloves

Also from Mighty Grip, these pole dancing gloves are perfect for beginners and advanced pole dancers alike. They are tight-fitting to prevent your hands from slipping around inside the gloves and they have tack strips on the outside that can help you to grip onto the pole. Sweaty and slippery hands can make it almost impossible for you to complete the tricks that you are trying to achieve and they can also be a safety issue because they can cause you to fall off the pole. These gloves will help to prevent that from happening and make sure that your grip on the pole is as tight as it can be. They can also help you to pull off some of the more advanced moves because you can focus on what you need to do without worrying about your hands slipping.

They can also help to protect your hands from calluses that can be caused by constant shifting and contact with the pole and they can absorb your sweat. These gloves will be one of your go-to pole dancing accessories as soon as you try them on!

Mighty Grip Black Pole Dance Ankle Protectors

These are another product from Mighty Grip and they are designed for your lower legs and ankles. When you pole dance it can be surprising just how many parts of your body need to be able to effectively grip the pole, and your lower legs and ankles are some of those body parts. Just like your knees and hands, these parts of your body can be prone to slipping which can prevent you from executing your movements and can cause you to slip off the pole.

These ankle protectors use the same kind of tacky strips like the other Mighty Grip products which can help you to get that extra bit of grip on the pole. They can also protect your lower legs and ankles from bruising.

iTAC2 Level 4 (Extra Strength) Total Absolute Control Dance Pole Sports Grip 20gm

Wearing grip products like gloves, knee pads, and ankle pads can be one way of helping you to grip the pole, but there is another way as well. Rather than wearing clothing that has tacky strips to grip the pole, there are also products out there that you can apply directly to your skin or the pole that can directly add the tackiness that you need.

The iTAC2 is used by pole dancing professionals and it works by adding a layer of moisture and stickiness to your skin to help you to grip the pole. It is made with organic ingredients and can be removed afterward. It is a gel that you add directly to your pole so that you can be sure that whichever part of your body is gripping the pole, you will get the same amount of stickiness.

Togear Liquid Chalk

Unlike the iTAC2, which you apply to the pole itself, the Togear Liquid Chalk is designed to be used on your hands. Favored by weight lifters, liquid chalk is made from pure magnesium carbonate which helps to effectively increase the friction of the skin of your hands. And just like weight lifters, pole dancers also rely on their hands to be able to grip onto a metal pole without any slipping.

The problem with using normal chalk is that it is messy and is very difficult to carry around but liquid chalk is mess-free and this one even comes in a handy travel-sized container so that you can take it with you to pole dance and have that extra grip wherever you are.

The best way of achieving the best grip that you can is to use as many of these grip products in conjunction with each other. So use the liquid chalk on your hands and then also add the iTAC2 to the pole as well. That way you can be sure that you won’t slip at all.

Why choose pole dancing?

Pole dancing does, of course, have sensual roots, although its history isn’t just limited to strip clubs and exotic dance. It also has an acrobatic background which began 800 years ago with the sport of Mallakhamb in India. It was a test of endurance, strength, and acrobat ability.

Nowadays, pole fitness is a mixture of both of these things. There are lots of opportunities to take exotic pole dancing classes to learn the best sensual moves, but there is also another side that is making pole fitness more of a sport. There are pole dancing competitions and even calls to make it an Olympic sport.

Pole dancing is both an art form and a type of exercise. You can learn either one or you can go ahead and learn both because many of the skills will translate across. It really all depends on what suits your needs and your personality. Whichever style of pole dancing takes your fancy, you can rest assured that you will get a wide range of benefits from taking it up. These can include:

1) Weight loss

Pole dancing is amazing for weight loss. It is a form of aerobic exercise and has you making big movements that use every muscle in your body, so you will burn a ton of calories. You can expect to burn between 300 and 600 calories per class, which is equivalent to how many you would burn running.

Pole dancing isn’t just an aerobic exercise, it is also a strength exercise. To pull off some amazing pole dancing moves, you are going to need to utilize just about every muscle in your body, from your legs, your core, to your arms. And the more you work those muscles, the bigger they will get and the more toned you will look.

So while you could burn the same number of calories running, and you could also build muscle by lifting weights, choosing pole dancing can often be a better option. And that’s for one simple reason – it is fun! You are much more likely to want to stay dancing those extra 20 minutes that can make all the difference than you are to want to keep running or lift those last few weights. And you are also more likely to want to turn up more often. Making exercise fun is one of the best ways of ensuring that you are consistent. And being consistent is the best way to see results.

4) Confidence

When you hear people waxing lyrical about pole dancing and pole fitness, one of the things they almost always mention is how much confidence they have gained from it. Pole dancing makes you feel strong, and it makes you feel sexy and fun. You will walk out of your pole dancing class, or away from your pole at home, with an extra spring in your step and an air of confidence about you. Especially if you have just nailed a particular;y difficult move!

5) It is accessible

Don’t be put off from taking up pole dancing just because you are a beginner. It isn’t necessary at all to have a dance background to be able to pick up pole dancing. Complete beginners are welcome in just about every pole dancing and pole fitness class, and your teacher will be able to help you build your fitness and your confidence. You will be amazed at how far you will go in a short space of time!

6) It can be done in a small apartment

You aren’t just limited to using the dance poles set out in class. It might seem like a cumbersome piece of equipment, but you absolutely can pole dance at home event’s it’s not a big house, but rather a small apartment. In fact, a large percentage of pole dancers will have a pole at home so that they can practice in between classes. And there are also lots of people who choose to learn pole dancing from scratch at home with their own dancing poles.

What to look for in a dance pole

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and get yourself a dance pole to use at home. You definitely won’t regret it! The next thing you are going to need to do is to have a think about what you need from your pole and the features you would like to see.

Portability

Do you need to be able to pack your pole up and take it with you? Some people don’t and are happy to have a pole that will stay in the same spot in their home indefinitely. In this case, you can get away with buying a dance pole that may be slightly more complicated to assemble but will hold greater weight and be more sturdy. If you want to be able to pack your dance pole up easily and quickly, you are better off getting a more portable version that may hold slightly less weight.

A lot of dance poles don’t require you to screw anything into your floor or ceiling but are held in place by the upwards and downwards force. This means that even if you are in rented accommodation, you can usually feel pretty comfortable with installing a dance pole because it shouldn’t leave any marks when you come to move out.

Spinning versus static

For more advanced pole dancing, a spinning pole is often a must. The pole will spin in its base, allowing you to spin around and perform more elaborate moves. For beginners, a static pole can be a lot easier to learn on. A lot of dance poles do offer spin and static modes, so you can get the best of both worlds.

Room dimensions

It is time to get the measuring tape out and see how high your ceilings are. Most dance poles come with extenders to fit most of the more common ceiling heights, but if your ceilings are higher than 9 feet, you may need to buy an extra extender so that your pole will reach.

If you are planning on using your home dance pole on a regular basis, it is going to be important for you to get one that is durable. Any defects that appear in your pole won’t just spoil the look, they can also be dangerous. Even the slightest bit of material poking out can cause you an injury because you will be so close against the pole and will be moving along it with both force and speed.

Now we’ve got some idea of what to look for in a dance pole, you’ll be pleased to know that we have collected together the best dance poles on Amazon as decided by customer ratings at the time of the writing of this article. You will definitely be able to find the perfect dance pole for you out of this list.

Top beginner pole dancing moves to learn at home

So you’ve chosen your dance pole, and now is the time to get on it and have a whirl. There are lots of pole dancing moves that you can learn at home, without needing to attend a class. Let’s take a look at the pole dancing basics you will need to get you started.

1) Sitting on the pole

This move is your gateway to performing the more complex pole dancing techniques. It involves wrapping your legs around the pole and holding onto it using your thigh grip. That might sound easy but in practice it is surprisingly difficult. Especially because your goal is to be able to hold onto the pole with your legs only and not use your arms.

2) Chair spin

To be able to perform this spin, you will need to know how to hold your hands in a split grip hold with one hand high on the pole and the other hand low. Then lift your outer leg and push yourself into a swing, lifting the other leg into the air and holding both with the knees bent. Once you gain some confidence, you can even move onto crossing your legs as you spin around.

3) Fireman spin

This is another beginner spin which can look really elegant. You’ll need to hold one the pole with one hand above your head and one at chest height. Then spin the outer leg around the pole in a wide arc and hook it around so that it is crossed at the ankle. At the same time, lift the inside leg and hook it around the pole at the ankle as well so that your knees touch.

4) Climbing the pole

Learning to climb the pole can be quite the challenge at first, but it is something that can definitely be mastered with just a little bit of practice. The key is to make sure that you create a stable anchor for yourself. You do this by holding onto the pole with your dominant hand a higher. Then you take the foot on the same side as your dominant hand and hook it around the pole. Once you have your anchor in place, you can lift the other leg up and swing it around so that the back of the foot is hooked around the pole. Then you can begin to climb up by pulling yourself up with your arms shimmying your legs up with you. Make sure that you have a firm grip of the pole with your knees.

5) Push-pull grip

This is a technically difficult grip that will be important for you to learn if you want to progress onto some of the more complex pole dancing moves. With this grip, you place one arm high up on the pole and one lower down, and you lift your body off the ground. The top arm is the primary arm and will be pulling, whereas the bottom arm is the support arm that is keeping the body stable and pushing you out from the pole. They key is to keep your upper body stable and not allow yourself to collapse into the pole. Once you have mastered the push-pull method, you can use it in a variety of different grip styles that can be used to support some really impressive moves.

6) Floor work

You don’t have to spend your entire time pole dancing with your whole body off the floor. Practicing floor moves is important so that you can condition your body and get your technique perfect. Some examples include: back arch, flamingo pose, back slide, ballet hook, hip dips, box splits, hair flicks, bicycle legs, body rolls and leg waves.

Final thoughts

Learning pole dancing or pole fitness has become popular for good reason. It is a effective and fun form of exercise that will help you to lose weight, build muscle, improve your confidence, and have some fun. And that best part is that you don’t always have to go to a class to practice or learn. You can easily pole dance at home by picking up one of the dance poles we’ve looked at here. Keeping fit at home never has to be boring again!

How to install a portable dance pole

How to install a portable dance pole

Last Updated on April 10, 2024 by the Dancing Queen

Buy Me a Coffee

What are the challenges of installing a dance pole in your home or apartment?

If you are new to the secret of pole dancing, this article is a must-read to equip yourself with the exact know-how to install a removable dance pole in your home.

New pole dancers usually encounter difficulties when:

  • Working out the right length pole to be installed (Don’t be greedy).
  • Deciding the perfect corner in a room to locate and position a dance pole.
  • Finding out the compatibility of their pole with the floor and ceiling.
  • Perfectly installing the dance pole securely.
  • Selecting a pole type that works best for their practice.

To perfectly situate a dance pole is no less than art.

While a well-installed pole adds to your home’s grace and character a poorly installed pole might not only destroy the look of your place.

But could also be a major threat to your safety or a poler’s safety when dancing.

Finding the right space for dance pole

Things you should consider before setting up a dance pole

1. ceiling type.

Your ceiling type must be resilient to the pressure exerted by the pole or be a surface that can easily be repaired.

Concrete and well-cemented ceilings are the best especially when you seek a permanent installation.

However timber and plasterboard ceilings also work great, but you have to make sure your pole is supported directly on a ceiling joist or beam.

With popcorn ceilings, which are a textured plasterboard finish, both installation and maintenance can be a bit of a hassle. But you will  find out how to do it here

Ceiling in an open space at home

2. Landlord’s consent

Make sure your landlord is fine with the idea of you mounting a portable pole for your poler routines.

You may consult your landlord in case you lack knowledge about the room/apartment’s build.

Or you could make sure to use a portable dance pole that doesn’t leave behind any damage.

Speaking to the landlord

3. Possible damages to the floor or ceilings

If a pole is fitted wrong or over-tightened it may chip the ceiling’s finish or create depressions.

4. A soft landing

The floor must have a good shock absorption value, carpet is only going to protect you so much if you slip or fall therefore I recommend also getting a crash mat for practicing advanced moves.

Landing from lifting moves

5. Studs and ceiling joist position

Be aware of the ceiling’s joist structure and build for positioning a pole with adequate support. Find the ceiling joist or a girder if you can’t locate a solid ceiling structure [ 1 ].

To find a stud for your pole, you have the option to either contact a carpenter or use an electric stud finder device.

6. Dance pole

Your dance pole must be of good quality and of a suitable size .

Ceiling joists for mounting a dance pole

Permanent vs portable dance pole

Permanent dance pole.

The pole is attached to both the ceiling and the floor as a permanent fixture. (Mostly inside clubs and studios).

Why a permanent dance pole is worth it?

  • Safer in terms of stability and hold without doing maintenance checks.
  • Greater weight capacity for all types of dancers and moves.
  • A permanent mounting system helps engage in intensive pole dancing routines with more confidence and safety.

Why not install a permanent dance pole?

  • Lack of portability.
  • Possible lack of space if your installation went wrong.

Permanent poles on a studio

Portable dance pole

Dance poles that can be attached and re-attached according to the poler’s convenience are best for most new and advanced dancers.

Reasons to install a portable dance pole

  • Have the convenience of carrying a portable dance pole around as per poling schedules or practices at your friend’s house.
  • Modern portable dance poles offer a wide range of adjustments for different height ceilings.
  •  Easy to remove and hide out of the way if you use a common space.
  • Ceilings and floors stay safe from any sort of damage.

Drawbacks of a portable dance pole

  •  Expensive especially from a beginner’s POV.
  • Some models aren’t safe in terms of handling large amounts of weight or resistance.

Getting familiar with the parts of a removable dance pole

  • Top dome . A metallic plate is usually attached to the ceiling while fitting a dance pole for stability.
  • Base. Bases for dance poles come in an array of sizes (both length and width). However, a metallic base plate similar to the top dome is to stabilize the bottom end of the pole.
  • Main pole bars. The main pole bar is basically a hollow long cylindrical structure. The main pole comes in different lengths and materials.
  • Extension poles. Extra extension tubes can help by adjusting the height of the pole for installing a dance pole to suit different ceiling heights.
  • Fixing rod. A fixing or an adapter rod is for taunting the main pole secure into the space between the ceiling and the floor.

How to install a portable dance pole?

  • Place the dance pole’s base in the most suitable spot and area.
  • Select any extension rods you need according to the height of your ceiling, place the extension on the base’s end and screw the extension rod on.
  • Cover your base extension with an iron cover.
  • Next, place pole B inside the iron cover and fasten the place bolts with the screw area positioned at the top.
  • Place an adapter on the top of Pole A’s protuberance, and gradually put the ceiling iron dome on it.
  • Now connect Pole A and Pole B by placing Pole A on Pole B.
  • Place the adjoined pole and now with the help of 2 iron levers crank up the space (if any) between the pole and the ceiling.
  • Screw the iron cover from the end and the top.

Checking screw of the dance pole

Safe installation tips

  • Take the help of a professional if you need help the first time you set up.
  • Make sure your floor and ceiling are suitable for resistance caused by pole dancing drills.
  • Make sure that every integral part of the portable pole kit is in place.
  • The pole is nicely screwed and tightly nutted.
  • Circumferencing the dance pole with a crash mat will help escape injuries.

Trying out a pole after installation

Testing a secure pole installation

To test whether your dance pole is correctly fitted or not, you can start off with the visuals. Take a few steps back and check your pole’s alignment with a spirit level or a laser level.

Mark the top dome and check if there’s any shift in the positioning over time.

Check all screws and joint parts of the pole are secure.

Lightly joggle the pole to test the pole’s attachment from the ceiling and floor, to notice if there is any instability or movement.

Apply sideways force by safely leaning and pushing at intervals on the pole to make sure that it doesn’t budge and is secure in place before you dance and hold any balancing positions.

Once in a while, Look at taking down the pole, if you leave the pole set up long term check all the parts for possible loosening, fissures, or cracks.

Here’s what you should remember when installing a pole.

Pole dancing is a sport where your best buddy is your pole. If the pole is stationed well, you’ll be able to perform all the marvelous exotic drills of your dreams (And others).

However, compromising the safety, material, and positioning of your pole may result in fatal injuries while poling, and that is why we suggest taking advice and investing in quality.

Polers must essentially start by studying their place and then proceed to how to install the pole by following the instructions found in the packaging as every model is slightly different.

We have offered some tips to make your setup easier.

In case, you think your home isn’t adjustable or suitable for a portable pole, then I recommend that polers contact a professional.

New and advanced dancers should also ideally invest in a crash mat for safer practice during their routines.

Russian Far East: top 10 experiences

The Russian Far East has a mystique that’s been luring travellers for generations. With the volcanoes and geysers of Kamchatka, ancient stone pillars on the Lena River and some of the world’s coldest and remotest human settlements, as well as the cosmopolitan cities of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk, the region has something for everyone. Russia’s poignant past is present here too, from the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) railway to the infamous Kolyma Highway that runs to Magadan, the most notorious outpost of the Far Eastern Gulag system.

Vladivostok

The ‘Master of the East’, a hip, dynamic city with an impressive setting in the Golden Horn Bay, Vladivostok is the unofficial capital of the Russian Far East and a cultural heavyweight in its own right. St Petersburg’s renowned Mariinsky Theatre has inaugurated the Primorsky Stage in the city in recent years, joining the new Hermitage Vladivostok branch and the stellar Zarya Centre for Contemporary Art as the city’s premier cultural attractions. Meanwhile, the S-56 Submarine , Fort No 7 and the Vladivostok Fortress Museum pay homage to the city’s background as Russia’s most important eastern naval base. Vladivostok’s dining scene is second only to Moscow and St Petersburg, and numerous cocktail bars and pubs attract night owls. If the frenetic pace is a little overwhelming, you can always escape to the beaches on Russky Island and Popov Island .

Right in the heart of the legendary Kamchatka peninsula, the little town of Esso is the jumping-off spot for some terrific hiking, soaking in the istochniki (hot springs) and rafting on the nearby Bystraya River. Charming  izbas (wooden cottages) sit in a pine-scented valley, surrounded by forested mountains. A well-marked network of hiking trails threads its way through the surrounding Bystrinsky Nature Park, ranging in difficulty and in length – the shortest is 2km, the longest 42km.

One of Kamchatka’s highlights, the steaming Valley of Geysers can be accessed only by helicopter © Alla / Shutterstock

Valley of Geysers, Kamchatka

Accessible only by a helicopter tour from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the smoking Dolina Geyzerov is the star attraction of  Kamchatka – the volcano- and geyser-studded peninsula that has the most dramatic, volatile topography in all of Russia. This 8km-long valley, bisected by the Geysernaya River, is dotted with several dozen geysers that sporadically blast steam, mud and water towards the sky. Some of the more colourful ones can be admired while strolling along a specially made boardwalk.

The remote capital of the Sakha Republic, Yakutsk is both the world’s coldest city and a marvel of Soviet engineering, built entirely on permafrost. Its tangle of overground pipes, carrying water and gas, is a peculiar sight, but Yakutsk is a surprisingly cosmopolitan place despite its isolation. A visit to the quirky  Permafrost Kingdom is particularly worthwhile, with its never-melting sculptures of pagan gods and mythological characters, while the National Art Museum introduces you to the mammoth tusk carvings and paintings by Sakha artists. The best places to try Sakha delicacies such as indigirka (raw, frozen fish), reindeer and zherebyatiny (colt fillet) are Chochur Muran and Makhtal restaurants.

Riding the BAM railway

Stretching for some 4324km from Severobaikalsk (on the northern shores of Lake Baikal) to the Sea of Okhotsk, the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) is a triumph of railway engineering (and convict labour) and the less-taken alternative to the Trans-Siberian Railway. With its bridges spanning the mighty Lena and Amur rivers, its tunnels blasted through kilometres of sheer rock, and its tracks running through dense spruce forest and taiga, riding the BAM is a wonderful way to get to know ordinary Russians. You might find yourself sharing a beer or hot tea and heaped spoons of caviar with miners or lumberjacks, who’ll be intensely curious about you. It’s worth disembarking in Tynda, where travel writer Dervla Murphy got stuck while writing Through Siberia by Accident, to visit the BAM Museum, and in Komsomolsk-na-Amure, to check out the grand Soviet-era mosaics and the riverside beach.

Some 650km east of Yakutsk, the tiny reindeer and silver fox breeding station of Oymyakon (population around 500) is the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth, with temperatures in the nearby valleys dropping as low as -82°C. Various travel agencies in Yakutsk, including Visit Yakutia , organise week-long tours to Oymyakon to attend the annual Pole of Cold Festival in late March, featuring reindeer races, outdoor concerts and other festivities.

Whether you come here in winter for the ice sculptures, or in summer for the lively nightlife and the Amur River beach, Khabarovsk is a breath of fresh air, especially if you’ve spent days cooped up on the train before getting here. Its wide boulevards are lined with stately, tsarist-era buildings (spot the Far Eastern State Research Library and the Tsentralny Gastronom), and there are numerous green walkways for strolling around the city, including those on Amursky bul and Ussuriysky bul. The burgeoning dining scene’s highlights are Georgian cuisine at Satsivi  and fusion at Farsh ; some good bars are dotted around the city centre, including the hipster Brozbar , with a good range of craft beer.

Magadan and Kolyma Highway

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and hemmed in by the Sea of Okhotsk, Magadan is a surprisingly pleasant city, given its dark past. Described as the ‘pole of cold and cruelty’ in Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, it was the most notorious of the Stalinist forced labour camps from the 1930s to mid-1950s. The harsh sub-Arctic climate and dreadful work conditions are believed to have killed over a million prisoners in the Kolyma region, commemorated by the giant Mask of Sorrow monument on a hillside above Magadan, as well as at the Magadan Regional Museum . You can get here by air, or via the Russian Far East’s most ambitious road trip – a three- or four-day journey from Yakutsk by 6WD vehicle or truck along the Kolyma Highway, aka the ‘road of bones’, built on the backs of countless Gulag labourers.

The limestone Lena Pillars in the Sakha Republic are a popular cruise trip from Yakutsk © Vicky Ivanova / Shutterstock

Lena Pillars

The Russian Far East’s most popular cruise is the two-day jaunt from Yakutsk to the Lenskie Stolby (Lena Pillars) along the mighty Lena River. Resembling a petrified forest, the 80km-long, 35-million-year-old limestone pillars reach for the sky along the riverbank – a startling sight after you’ve spent many hours floating through impenetrable spruce forest. Lena Tur Flot  runs 36- and 46-hour cruises here aboard its two comfy cruise ships; you’ll even get to see a shaman ceremony.

Blagoveshchensk

A remote Russian outpost since 1644, this frontier town faces its rather more modern Chinese neighbour, Heihe, across the Amur River. However, it’s worth making the detour 110km south of the main Trans-Siberian Railway line to Blagoveshchensk to check out the charming tsarist-era architecture that dots the town centre; another highlight is the extensive  Amur Regional Museum . Blagoveshchensk is also one of the easiest places in Russia from which to enter China (though you’ll need to organise your visa in advance).

Light pole installation determined the cause of 911 outage

S IOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A company that supports South Dakota’s 911 systems has confirmed to Dakota News Now that the installation of a light pole was the cause of 911 outages across the state Wednesday evening.

Lumen is a global communications services provider and serves as the 911 service vendor for the state of South Dakota.

According to Lumen Global Issues Director Mark Molzen, a third-party company installing a light pole unrelated to Lumen’s services caused an outage that affected 911 calling services in South Dakota, Nevada and Nebraska on Wednesday evening.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, the pole was located in Kansas City, Missouri, and had cut into a fiber line.

Service was restored by 11 p.m CT. and South Dakota’s 911 text service was not impacted.

We restored all services in approximately two and a half hours. Our techs identified the issue and worked hard to fix it as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding. Lumen Global Issues Director Mark Molzen

'Jesus cried': Pastor leaves stage after comments at James River Church men's conference

A guest pastor was kicked off the stage for comments about a sword swallowing performance during James River Church's Stronger Men's Conference in Springfield this past weekend.

The Stronger Men's Conference is an annual event by James River Church, which "exists to inspire and equip men to live out God’s vision for manhood to be the husbands, fathers, and leaders God has called them to be," according to the church's press release. The church said that attendees from 38 states and 42 countries were present April 12 and April 13 at Springfield's Great Southern Bank Arena.

Pastor Mark Driscoll , who leads a "family ministry" in Scottsdale, Arizona, said the performance demonstrated "the Jezebel spirit" in a video posted online . Alex Magala, who has performed on various Got Talent shows including America's Got Talent, had opened the conference with what he calls "aerial sword swallowing," an act that consists of sword swallowing while performing acrobatics on a vertical metal pole.

"Before the Word of God was open, there was a platform. It was a high place. On it was a pole, an ashera, the same thing that's used in a strip club by women who have the Jezebel spirit to seduce men. And in front of that was a man who ripped his shirt off like a woman does in front of a pole at a strip club," said Driscoll, who has courted controversy in the past . "That man then ascended — See, our God is not arrogant. He is humble and he descends. And then, he swallowed a sword and Jesus cried."

James River Church's pastor John Lindell could then be heard saying, "Out of line, Mark," at which point Driscoll acknowledged Lindell and left the stage.

In the video, the crowd booed as Lindell stepped on stage and shouts of "You're not in charge" could be heard as he began to speak.

"Let me just say this: If Mark (Driscoll) wanted to say that, he should have said it to me first," Lindell said. "Matthew 18: 'If your brother offends you, go to him privately.' I talked to Mark (Driscoll) for a half hour; there was not one word of that. He's out of line."

In the past, conference performances have included BMX/motocross, professional bull riding, monster trucks and a car-crushing tank.

More on James River Church: An Ozarks church leader claims prayer regrew a woman's toes. Others aren't so sure.

In a video posted by an attendee , Driscoll and Lindell said they talked in private and reaffirmed their friendship before Driscoll gave his planned sermon alongside Lindell.

"I honor, respect, love and admire you as the father of this house. This is the greatest men's event, I believe, in the country right now," Driscoll said on stage, in what he said was a "model of how brothers can work through their" differences. He expressed remorse for not speaking to Lindell directly before speaking to the crowd.

"I apologize to you for not going that route, which would have lead us from the most awkward moment in the history of any men's event," Driscoll said.

Lindell said while people can have different opinions, he and Driscoll agree on the things that mattered.

"People are going to make mistakes, they make misjudgments, but if we are going to penalize people and kill friendships over that, then we've damaged the body of Christ," Lindell said.

The day after the conference, Driscoll tweeted about the conference.

As of publication, neither Driscoll nor James River Church have responded to requests for comment.

Who is Mark Driscoll?

Driscoll is an Evangelical pastor who co-founded Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington, in 1996.

He was ousted from the church in 2014, following "accusations that he bullied members, threatened opponents, lied and oversaw mismanagement of church funds," according to an article in the Seattle Times . The departure was spurred by a 2013 radio interview where he was accused of plagiarizing another pastor's work for his book. That interview led to a Christian magazine uncovering that Mars Hill paid a company $25,000 to buy up and distribute Driscoll's book so it would make best-seller lists.

In 2016, he founded Real Faith with his wife and daughter in Scottsdale, Arizona. Its website says it is a family ministry "created for real people with real questions about real life with Jesus."

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Where to go on a first date with the city

Source: Lori/Legion-Media

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

travel dance pole

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors.

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

travel dance pole

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. Take a selfie here with a view of the Amur River at the monument to Count Muravyov-Amursky.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 2. Attractions

  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
