Audi MMI Systems: the features, the differences and how to find your model

MMI or Multi-Media Interface has been Audi’s in-house infotainment system for about two decades. Featured in all Audi’s today, the MMI models has been through years of evolution.

From the first MMI 2G Low/Basic to the latest MMI MIB gen 3, there have been significant improvements in Audi MMI models.

This has not only helped them to keep up with the competition, but a smarter, more, advanced MMI system means improved user experience and high customer satisfaction.

While a newer MMI system is a boon for new buyers, it creates a lot of complications for old Audi owners who are either looking for upgrades or simply want to troubleshoot, as the abundance of MMI versions not only makes it harder to identify but also makes it difficult to find the right upgrades.

In this article you will learn everything about MMI models, different available models, their functions, and how to identify and upgrade them.

What is the MMI for Audi ?

The Audi MMI system is a single-integrated interface just like BMW’s iDrive or Mercedes MBUX. Such interfaces, by using MOST technology, make the connection between various systems and allow control over multiple devices and functions inside cars.

In other words, the Audi Multimedia Interface is the centre console that gives you control over all of your car’s functionality.

From basic radio to climate control and sat-nav, depending on your MMI model you can control all that, either from the centre dial or the touch screen display(if it is supported).

The most highlighted feature of the MMI system is also the central screen and the control dial on the center console with 4 different multi-purpose switches. This also serves as a differentiating factor between an MMI and a non-MMI console.

While MMI today is used in all Audi models, the first car to feature MMI was Audi A8 D3 in 2002. From there on, different Audi cars have featured different MMI models.

Depending on the specs, we currently have 10 different models of the MMI system excluding the latest MMI MIB 3.

Different MMI models, functions, and vehicles supported:

Audi MMI 2G

As mentioned before, the Audi MMI 2G was the very first MMI model released by Audi. Precisely known as the MMI 2G Low/basic, this model was an upgrade from Audi’s basic infotainment system.

Later on, Audi upgraded the basic to MMI 2G high which came with a 6.5 inch TFT colour display, Sirius/HD radio/FM/AM/DAB, MP3 CD player, iPod support with MDI, Aux-In, USB, etc.

The MMI 2G was used till 2011 in several Audi A-series, Q-series, and R series. Cars that featured MMI 2G were the Audi A4(2009-10), Audi A5 (2008-09), Audi A6 (2005-09), Audi A8 (2002-11), Audi Q7(2007-09), and the RS6(2008-2011).

Audi MMI 3G:

The Audi MMI 3G was the next-gen MMI that offered the same level of functionalities as MMI 2G High but faster and with a better/updated user interface. The MMI 3G also came in various models such as the MMI 3G Basic(DVD Rom), MMI 3G/3G+ (HD), MMI High 3G, and MMI 3G+(connect).

Audi MMI 3G Basic:

The Audi MMI 3G basic offered a 6.5 inch TFT colour display, Sirius/HD radio/FM, MP3 CD player, Aux-In, iPod(MDI), USB, and Bluetooth streaming via the use of after-market accessory.

The MMI 3G came standard in Audi A1(2011-18), Audi A4 (2010-13), Audi A6(2009-2012), Audi Q5(2009-13), and Audi Q7 (2009-12).

Audi MMI 3G+:

An upgraded version was later introduced as the Audi MMI 3G+. It offered a 7-inch TFT color display, four function keys (instead of eight), and a central control dial with joystick functionality.

Other standard functions included CD, SD-card support, DVD Audio/video, DVD drive, Sirius/HD Radio/FM/AM/DAB, built-in HDD, Aux-In, and USB connectivity.

The MMI 3G+ was equipped in Audi A4(2013-17), Audi A5(2009-18), Audi Q3(2015-19), and Audi Q5(2013-2018).

Audi MMI 3G High and 3G+ High (Connect):

The Audi MMI 3G High, despite having similar specs as the 3G+, offers a touch screen, enabling handwriting recognition for better accessibility, and also had Bluetooth streaming as standard option. This model was fitted on Audi A8 2010.

Whereas the Audi MMI 3G+ High (Connect), with standard 3G High specs, also had a WiFi hotspot. The Audi A6(2012-16), A7(2012-16), and A8(2011-19) were models that came standard with the MMI 3G+ (Connect).

Audi MMI MIB:

The MIB or the Modular Infotainment Baukasten is Audi’s modern MMI system based on a completely new architecture. Launched in 2013 with the Audi A3, the MIB MMI system incorporates two separate main units into a single housing.

While the first unit is the basic Radio Car control the second main unit is called Multi-Media extension board or MMX. Integrated with Nvidia’s Tegra processor, the MMX controls all media-related functions along with voice control, telephone, and navigation. The MMX board can also be swapped in case an upgrade is required.

Thanks to this, the newer MIB system is not only visually pleasing with a smooth UI but Audi can now also provide over-the-air updates for MIB navigation. The map updates are also made free for the first three years from the production date of the vehicle.

Since the vehicles are activated from the factory, customers can also download map updates from Audi directly, as many times as they want within the given time frame.

Currently, MIB has four different variants, the MIB 1, MIB 2, MIB 2 High, and the latest MIB3. While the MIB itself was a major upgrade from the standard MMI system, the MIB 3 is said to be considerably faster than the previous version.

It will be capable of advanced speech recognition with the ability to understand complex words and expressions.

Based on Linux, it will also incorporate Amazon’s Alexa as your personal Audi AI. Which ultimately will also grant you access to smart IoT devices installed at your home.

You also get a hybrid digital radio, Sirius XM with 360L, on-demand navigation, and a new myAudi app with access to real-time information and tons of beneficial features.

All in all, the new MIB 3 will be the most modern MMI system so far.

In 2021, All Audi models except the A1, A3, and Q2 will come standard with the MIB 3.

As for other models, the MIB 1 came standard with the Audi A1 (2018-19), the A3 and A3 e-Tron(2015 to 17) whereas the MIB 2 comes standard with the Audi A6, A7, A8, Q7, and the e-Tron Quattro in-between 2019-21.

Well, this was a basic overview of all Audi’s MMI models since 2002. But how will you tell which one is the one you have.

Which MMI model do you have on your Audi ?

A very simple way of learning exactly which MMI head unit or what version of MMI firmware is running on your Audi is by checking the version information displayed by your unit. To this end, follow these steps:

First, press the Setup or Menu button on the radio. Then, go to Settings and scroll down to Version info.

As you access version information, you will see a serial code under Media/software version. The prefix of your software version will decide which MMI model is installed on your Audi. And the serial code under the Navigation database version, tells you about the version of Map running on your system.

The list below contains different MMI models with the prefix of supported software version written in front. Simply match the prefix with the version on your screen and you will have your MMI model.

How Does the Audi e-tron Route Planner Work?

What are the capabilities of the Audi e-tron route planner?

On the battery-electric models, the Audi e-tron route planner extends the previously known navigation functions of the Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) by the specific needs of e-car drivers. In addition, it assists them in optimally handling the requirements of electric mobility especially when traveling medium and longer distances. The e-tron route planner calculates the fastest route, considers traffic and road data, includes the driver’s driving style, calculates the duration of the charging stops and incorporates them in planning the total travel time. Users receive important information such as the charging capacity or charging connections and plug types for the relevant charging stations. Moreover, the system indicates dynamic availability, for instance, whether or not charging stations are vacant or occupied, always with a bias for moving forward quickly. For example, two short charging processes with high charging capacity may yield time-related advantages over one long stop with low charging capacity. Alternative routes with better charging infrastructure are considered in the calculation of the optimal total travel time as well. The Audi e-tron route planner gives preference to the powerful HPC charging stations (HPC = High Power Charging). They are able to charge the high-voltage battery, for instance in the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro, with up to 150 kW direct current (DC). Under ideal conditions, charging from 5 to 80 percent of the battery’s capacity takes only around half an hour. A push notification on the myAudi app indicates to the driver when the desired state of charge (SoC) has been achieved and the trip can be continued.

What makes the Audi e-tron route planner so valuable?

Audi has been installing in its e-tron models the e-tron route planner as standard equipment from day one. It provides the four rings with a competitive advantage because this important assistant is unrivaled in this form. The service is fully integrated in the brand’s ecosystem. The route planner can be used in the car and for pre-planning purposes by means of the myAudi App. In this way, planning a trip with the Audi e-tron can conveniently start on a mobile device at home and be sent to the car by wireless transmission. Daily charging station data updates are available in both the myAudi app and the in-car Audi MMI. The combination of the Audi e-tron route planner, the individual search for the most suitable charging stations, display of their locations and charted range indication covering an area surrounding the driver’s own location makes this total package so practical and valuable.

What technology does the Audi e-tron route planner use?

The Audi e-tron route planner is a new software development that was initially integrated in the Modular Infotainment Matrix of the MIB 2+ generation. Since 2020, the third generation of the Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB 3) with ten times higher computing power has been offering e-tron route planner functions that have been enhanced once again. A new algorithm improves everyday usability of the extended route planner: daily data updates of potential charging stations and a portfolio of alternative routes that have been optimized for the requirements of e-cars assist drivers even more effectively. Among other things, the daily data updates include detailed information such as payment and authentication opportunities, accurate station operator data and potential access restrictions.

How does the driver affect the e-tron route planner?

While calculating the route, the system considers the battery’s state of charge. Before starting a trip, the driver can set a different SoC in the app in order to use the SoC anticipated at the time of departure for predicting the route. The Audi e-tron route planner includes the personal driving style based on previous trips. If the driving style changes, the system will adjust its calculation accordingly. The choice of charging opportunities affects the route planner as well: if the driver uses the e-tron Charging Service, the system can give preference to relevant charging stations. The list of charging stations is constantly updated online and indicates the latest update. At the end of a trip, the Last Mile Navigation of the myAudi App will calculate the remaining distance before the final destination is reached. All previously known features and functions of the navigation system have been fully retained: alternative routes, avoidance of road types such as freeways or backroads, input of additional destinations and consideration of toll roads in relevant countries.

In which markets can the Audi e-tron route planner be used? The Audi e-tron route planner is available in all of Audi’s sales regions. In Europe, the e-tron route planner benefits from a well-established network of Audi’s proprietary e-tron Charging Service currently comprising about 180,000 public charging stations. A particularly convenient aspect of the service makes it possible for customers to travel in 26 European countries using just one charging card and paying the same country-wide prices.

What future prospects does the Audi e-tron route planner open up?

With the e-tron route planner, Audi is already providing a package today that eliminates many uncertainties about electric driving and particularly the aspect of charging. Going forward, the company is planning to tailor the service even more closely to individual user needs and preferences. Due to the integration of the route planner in Audi’s ecosystem, users benefit from a constant evolution of the services relating to electric driving on various levels.

It is the ‘raised’ area marked ‘A’ on the diagram which is used to illuminate road signs etc, when driving on the left in the UK. However, this area will shine into oncoming driver’s eyes when driving on the right in Europe, and therefore needs to be adapted to prevent dazzle. This can be achieved as follows: Without removing the backing paper, take hold of the ‘tail’ end of an adaptor and offer the ‘round’ end up to the Headlamp in various positions (see folded leaflet for typical positions – Diagrams 1 - 8 are the most commonly used). The aim is to achieve a reasonable dimming of the ‘dazzle causing Area’ –A, without compromising the overall brightness of the headlamp’s beam ‘hotspot’ (Area ‘B’). By a process of experimentation it will be possible to find the optimum position for the Adaptor. NOTE : Ideally, the engine should be left running during this process to ensure maximum beam clarity.

Once the fitting position has been identified, the adaptors should be applied using the ‘fitting Instructions’ section of your leaflet. NOTE : Generally, the Adaptor will fit in the same position (NOT the opposite position) on each of the two Headlamps. For example, if the Adaptor fits in the bottom left corner of the Driver’s side Headlamp, it will also fit in the bottom left corner of the Passenger’s side headlamp. We trust the above information will allow you to successfully apply your Eurolites, but please email us at [email protected] if you have any further questions.

b) The adhesive ‘backing paper’ on the reverse of the adaptors should be white and printed with a blue or red ‘removal warning’ – see image below.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Children, dressed in new clothes, are offered gifts and money to celebrate the joyous occasion.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

The most popular greeting is “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) or “Eid sa’id” (Happy Eid). Eid greetings also vary depending on the country and language.
