Senior travel insurance (2022): 7 best plans in Singapore for elderly travellers

Senior travel insurance (2022): 7 best plans in Singapore for elderly travellers

Finally planning to take your parents or grandparents on holiday this year? You’ve probably got a good handle on the travel itinerary, but you might not have thought about yet is which travel insurance plan to buy for the older folks.

It matters because most insurers drastically reduce their travel insurance coverage for those 70 years old and above. That’s terrible because you want MORE medical coverage for the elderly, not less!

Finding a travel insurance plan for the elderly is a tedious affair. I had to comb through all the major insurers’ boring “summary of benefits” tables to shortlist which are the least bad.

Senior travel insurance (2022) – 7 best plans in Singapore for elderly travellers

Here are the key benefits for the seven more appropriate travel insurance plans for seniors in Singapore. The amounts represent coverage limits for those 70 years and above, i.e. how much you can claim.

Wondering what on earth all these insurance terms mean? Here’s a brief description:

  • Emergency medical evacuation: In the event of an emergency, this is the cost of sending you home for treatment via an air ambulance
  • Medical expenses (overseas): Reimbursement for hospital and medical expenses overseas during your trip
  • Medical expenses (Singapore): Reimbursement for medical expenses in Singapore when you come back from your trip (within a certain time frame)

NTUC travel insurance (PreX) for senior citizens

Since it’s probably the biggest travel insurer in Singapore, I doubt NTUC travel insurance needs any introduction.

What’s special about NTUC is that they offer two types of plans: normal and Enhanced PreX. The latter covers pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which is definitely a big plus for seniors.

Here’s a look at the coverage limits for NTUC Income Enhanced PreXtravel insurance. This is the Basic plan which is the cheapest.

Another thing to note is that NTUC Enhanced PreX plans are very expensive. A week’s coverage in ASEAN starts from $102 – way, way higher than the usual $30 something you’d expect to pay for regular travel insurance.

That said, NTUC is the only insurer that provides adequate coverage for seniors with medical conditions. MSIG also has a range of insurance for pre-existing conditions, but the benefits are drastically reduced for those above 70. For instance, the overseas medical coverage limit falls from $250,000 to $50,000 for those above 70.

NTUC travel insurance for senior citizens

It’s not a MUST to spring for PreX. In the past, before NTUC PreX came along, it was pretty much impossible to get travel insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions, so everyone just sucked it up and hoped for the best.

If you’re comfortable with that, the regular NTUC travel insurance is also worthy of consideration.

At a low price point, the cheapest Classic plan offers one of the most generous medical benefits for seniors: a $250,000 combined limit for overseas medical expenses + emergency evacuation.

Singlife with Aviva travel insurance for senior citizens

My personal favourite of the lot is Singlife with Aviva travel insurance because its medical coverage totally does not discriminate against elderly travellers.

Check out the coverage on their cheapest plan (Lite) – there’s no difference for any of the benefits, except the personal accident payout.

In particular, I like that the local medical expenses limit is extremely high for seniors – $10,000 compared to $1,000 or $2,000 offered by other insurers.

Aviva travel insurance is also extremely affordable. If you or an immediate family member is an Aviva policyholder, you can get a 30per cent discount. Otherwise, they’re running a 18per cent off promotion for selected buyers.

UOB travel insurance for senior citizens

Although I’m really not a fan of UOB’s other products, I honestly think that UOB travel insurance is some of the best in Singapore pre-pandemic. A major drawback of UOB’s insurance is the lack of Covid-19 coverage. Especially for senior travellers, getting Covid-19 overseas could lead to some serious medical implications.

While they’ve delivered excellent benefits for senior travellers on other fronts, the lack of Covid-19 coverage is definitely a concern.

UOB travel insurance comes in 3 tiers Basic (cheapest), Essential (cheaper) and Preferred (premium). All plans cover anyone aged 70 and above.

Here’s a look at the coverage for UOB Insure & Travel Basic plan:

Of the seven plans here, if you were to upgrade to UOB’s Essential plan, you would be privy to the highest benefits for post-travel local medical expenses of $15,000 and $25,000 respectively for those above and below 70, which I think is good because older folks have weaker immune systems and illnesses may linger (or even develop) after the trip.

OCBC travel insurance for senior citizens

My key takeaway is that, among the plans compared here, OCBC travel insurance has the highest emergency medical evacuation benefit for senior citizens. And more importantly, it is calculated separately from overseas medical expenses.

This is a travel insurance plan to consider if the medical infrastructure in your travel destination is poor, e.g. a rural/remote place. In a medical emergency, you’re more likely to be evacuated home than rushed to the nearest hospital.

OCBC also has the highest benefits for Traditional Chinese Medicine ($600) for a basic plan.

However, the OCBC’s cheapest Starter plan does not offer any Covid-19 coverage. Upgrade to the Essential and Ultimate plans for Covid-19 benefits. However, unlike NTUC and Singlife with Aviva, seniors above 70 are only covered a measly $7,500 in medical expenses while overseas.

You might not associate OCBC with travel insurance, but it should be legit since it’s provided by Great Eastern, OCBC’s insurance arm.

Their plans are very affordable thanks to near-perpetual discounts. Here’s what the coverage for the cheapest Starter plan looks like.

Citibank DirectAsia travel insurance for senior citizens

Another bank offering surprisingly good travel insurance for senior travellers, Citibank is also worth considering if you’re in the same scenario as above – going to a place with poor/no medical care available.

Citibank is a distributor of DirectAsia’s Trip Saviour travel insurance plans. Now, we all know Direct Asia has a reputation for being budget-friendly but is its coverage up to par? In theory, you have three tiers to pick from, Classic, Deluxe, and Platinum.

Here’s what the coverage looks like for the cheapest Classic plan:

Note that it’s a little on the pricier side unless there’s a good promotion going on.

Unfortunately, the plans also do not include Covid-19 coverage and it’s not an optional add-on.

Allianz travel insurance for senior citizens

Allianz isn’t quite as well-known as the other insurers here, but it’s a very established brand in Europe.

The coverage benefits for the cheapest (Bronze) tier of travel insurance is pretty bare bones. If you’re considering Allianz as an option, you’d be better off with the Silver or Platinum plans.

Here’s the coverage for the mid-tier Silver plan:

Unlike most other insurers, the benefit limits is the same across all age groups. However, it’s important to note that the the plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and it does not cover medical expenses when you’re back in Singapore.

The redeeming quality of Allianz travel insurance is that the limits for emergency evacuation and medical expenses are separated. Again, it’s suitable for those travelling to destinations with poor medical infrastructure.

Senior Travel Insurance for Elderly with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (2022)

  • UOB travel insurance for senior citizens
  • OCBC travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Citibank DirectAsia travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Allianz travel insurance for senior citizens
  • MSIG travel insurance for senior citizens
  • Etiqa travel insurance for senior citizens

1.  Best Travel Insurance for Senior Citizens

Here are the most popular travel insurance plans and their premiums and coverage limits for senior citizens. The amounts represent coverage limits for those 70 years and above, i.e. how much you can claim.

If you pay close attention, most travel insurance policy wordings will show that they decrease coverage eg. only 60% of limit for elderly above age 70.

As you can tell from the table above, the coverage limits are lower for elderly above 70 years old. Before we deep dive into the policies, here’s a low down on what the insurance terms mean:

  • Emergency medical evacuation: In the event of an emergency, this is the cost of sending you home for treatment via an air ambulance
  • Medical expenses (overseas): Reimbursement for hospital and medical expenses overseas during your trip
  • Medical expenses (Singapore): Reimbursement for medical expenses in Singapore when you come back from your trip (within a certain time frame)

2. NTUC travel insurance for senior citizens

NTUC travel insurance (PreX) for senior citizens

On the other hand, for elderly with existing health conditions, the NTUC Income Enhanced PreX travel insurance would be an ideal choice. This is the Basic plan which is the cheapest.

*Note that there are sub-limits for claims directly related to pre-existing conditions. This is $150,000 for adults below 70, and $100,000 for those aged 70 and up. So, although pre-existing medical conditions are covered, the actual coverage isn’t as high as it looks.

Of the 7 plans here, if you were to upgrade to UOB’s Essential plan, you would be privy to  high benefits for post-travel local medical expenses of $10,000 and $25,000 respectively for those above and below 70 , which I think is good because older folks have weaker immune systems and illnesses may linger (or even develop) after the trip. Plus, chances are they have their medical records with a local doctor they might want to seek follow-up treatment from.

5. OCBC travel insurance for senior citizens

8. MSIG travel insurance for senior citizens

MSIG Insurance is yet another provider born out of our friendly neighbours Malaysia, Truly Asia. It is also another provider that offers a plan for pre-existing conditions. Before getting into the Pre-Ex plan, let’s look at the  coverage for the cheapest TravelEasy Standard plan:

The MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan’s main drawback is its low coverage limit for overseas medical expenses. Comparing across the board, MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan’s coverage of $50,000 is amongst one of the lowest. The coverage for medical expenses due to COVID-19 is also nothing to shout about. However, it does have a very high $1,000,000 limit for emergency medical evacuation should your ah ma need to be airlifted back to Singapore.

MSIG travel insurance (Pre EX) for senior citizens

Let’s see how MSIG Pre-Ex policy fares:

MSIG logo

MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex Standard

Before your purchase MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan, you’ll have to answer a slew of questions about your medical history. Some of which include:

  • I am following my treating doctor’s advice. This includes not refusing or delaying any monitoring, medical appointment, medical test, medication, treatment or surgery.
  • I do not have any medical condition or symptom which I have not consulted a doctor for or for which I am waiting for medical test, medical result, diagnosis, treatment or surgery.
  • I am not required to stay in a hospital as an inpatient for more than three days in a row in the last 12 months.

On top of having proven that you’ve been attending your doctor’s appointment and taking your meds, you might still not qualify for MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan if you have been hospitalised for more than 3 consecutive days in the past year.

If you do decide to opt for MSIG’s TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan, note that it does not include COVID-19 coverage .

For more on MSIG travel insurance promotions, claims procedure and T&Cs , read our review here.

8. Etiqa travel insurance for senior citizens

Etiqa might not be a household name amongst Singaporeans but given its very affordable price tag, it’s worthy of looking into. Given how cheap it can be, do Etiqa’s travel insurance plans give you sufficient coverage? Let’s look at the coverage of Etiqa’s Entry plan which is the lowest tier:

In fact, even with its low prices, Etiqa’s plans are very competitive with what’s offered by the other providers in terms of its key coverages such as emergency medical evacuation and personal accident. However, with the lowest tier plan, there’s no coverage of medical expenses incurred in Singapore. Should you need follow-up treatment in Singapore, be prepared to foot the bill yourself. Otherwise, you can opt for the second or third tier plans that offer some coverage for medical expenses incurred in Singapore.

It’s also important to know that the COVID-19 plan is an optional add-on. Don’t forget to add it to your cart before you proceed to checkout.

Etiqa travel insurance (Pre Ex) for senior citizens

If you have pre-existing conditions, Etiqa also offers a plan for elderly with pre-existing conditions. Let’s take a look at the key benefits of Etiqa’s Tiq Entry plan:

Etiqa’s Tiq Pre-Ex plan does not include COVID-19 coverage. On top of that, like the non-pre ex version, the pre ex version of the Entry plan does not include any coverage for medical expenses in Singapore. If you’re fully onboard Etiqa’s travel insurance plan, you might want to top up more for each one of the higher tiers for more comprehensive coverage.

The first plans you see may be OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier . These plans are popular for good reasons: They offer extensive benefits and high benefit limits, and they cover children 17 and under for free when they’re traveling with a parent or a grandparent (not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents). If you’re planning a grand vacation overseas, these plans will give you the best protection.

But what if they’re just too expensive? Consider the OneTrip Basic plan instead. An economical choice for domestic and international travelers, OneTrip Basic includes all the benefits you need for less. There’s a $10,000 limit for emergency medical benefits and a $50,000 limit on emergency medical transportation.

If you’re not worried about losing your pre-paid trip expenses, we recommend the OneTrip Emergency Medical plan. This plan includes substantial post-departure benefits — up to $50,000 in emergency medical benefits and up to $250,000 for emergency medical transportation — but does not have trip cancellation/interruption benefits. As a result, it’s really affordable, even for senior travelers.

Here’s the best-kept secret of all: annual travel insurance. For travelers over 75, the most cost-effective travel insurance option may be an AllTrips plan, which protects all your travel in a 365-day period. When you’re getting a quote for annual insurance, age doesn’t matter! Your cost is the same whether you’re 25, 75 or 95 years old. Seriously: Get a quote for an annual plan and see for yourself   .

One word of caution: If you’re heading overseas, do not skip emergency medical benefits just to save money on your travel insurance. If you should fall seriously ill or suffer a serious injury while traveling, the cost of treatment and transportation can be staggeringly expensive — as we saw in Anna’s case. As the U.S. State Department notes, “many foreign medical facilities and providers require cash payment up front and do not accept U.S. insurance plans. Medicare does not provide coverage outside of the United States.” iii

Can I get travel insurance if I’m over 75 and have health problems?

Here’s the good news: Medical history and/or chronic medical conditions do not affect the cost of travel insurance. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, however, you need to understand how travel insurance may or may not cover it.

We define a pre-existing medical condition as an injury, illness, or medical condition that, within the 120 days prior to and including the insurance purchase date:

  • Caused a person to seek medical examination, diagnosis, care, or treatment by a doctor;
  • Presented symptoms; or
  • Required a person to take medication prescribed by a doctor (unless the condition or symptoms are controlled by that prescription, and the prescription has not changed).

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, opt for a policy that includes the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver . With this waiver, you can still be covered for losses due to a pre-existing medical condition if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • Your policy was purchased within 14 days of the date of the first trip payment or deposit;
  • You were a U.S. resident when the policy was purchased;
  • You were medically able to travel when the policy was purchased;
  • On the policy purchase date, you insured the full non-refundable cost of your trip with us. If you incur additional non-refundable trip expenses after you purchase this policy, you must insure them with us within 14 days of their purchase. (If you do not, those expenses will still be subject to the pre-existing medical condition exclusion.)

If you have questions about what any of this means, or if you’d like advice on choosing the best travel insurance plan, please contact us! Insurance advisers are available to talk you through all available options for travel insurance over 75, or at any age.

  • Best Travel Insurance for Seniors 2024

Author - Anastassia Evlanova

Senior citizens may need more comprehensive travel insurance to cover their medical needs while overseas. However, many insurers tend to severely cut their medical coverage for seniors above the age of 70. To help elderly travellers, our team of travel insurance experts rounded up the best travel insurance plans for seniors after analysing hundreds of data points from 80 travel insurance plans.

*Please read the important travel updates regarding COVID-19 here .

  • Cheapest Plans for Seniors
  • FWD Premium : Comprehensive medical coverage for competitive premiums
  • Etiqa Basic : Modest medical coverage but offers ongoing promotions that make premiums very affordable
  • HL Assurance Enhanced : Costlier than FWD and Etiqa but offers higher medical coverage
  • Best Value Plans for Seniors
  • Direct Asia 500 : Affordable premium option
  • Income Classic : Good option for travellers looking for medical coverage
  • Aviva Plus : Offers flexible cancellation policies and good medical coverage
  • Allianz Travel Silver : High value for money option for those looking for travel inconvenience benefits
  • Best Plans for Medical Coverage
  • Aviva Plus : Doesn't cut coverage for seniors over a certain age
  • Income Superior Pre-Ex : Lets you claim for pre-existing conditions

Picking the Best Travel Insurance Plans for Seniors

We researched dozens of travel insurance plans and analysed hundreds of data points to find out the best travel insurance plans for seniors. Compare our top picks based on coverage and price.

This graph compares the price of major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers compare and find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip

  • Cheapest Travel Insurance for Seniors FWD, Etiqa & more
  • Best Value Travel Insurance Aviva, Direct Asia & more
  • Best for Medical Coverage Aviva, NTUC
  • Best for Trip Inconvenience Allianz Travel

Cheapest Travel Insurance for Seniors

  • Purchase a travel policy and stand a chance to win a flight ticket to a destination of your choice

Regardless of destination and length of coverage, senior travellers who choose Etiqa, FWD or HL Assurance will get the cheapest travel insurance rates.

On the other hand, Etiqa's Tiq plans coverage is more modest with only emergency evacuation and overseas medical coverage available for the Entry plan. However, its ongoing promotions can make it a good option for seniors who are focused on price and are healthy enough to not require high levels of medical coverage. This is especially true for active seniors who also like to go on hikes and do sports while vacationing since Tiq covers adventurous activities. You can also choose to get pre-ex coverage if you are willing to pay the S$60 extra dollars (1-week coverage).

FWD offers more comprehensive medical coverage than Etiqa, with S$40,000 medical expense coverage and S$2,000 of domestic medical coverage for seniors over 70 and costs around S$10 more than Etiqa for a one-week trip. However, it is important to remember that looking at price alone is not a determinant of a good plan. If you are travelling to a country with expensive healthcare, it is better to spend a little more but get better coverage than be stuck with a costly medical bill.

If you are interested in protecting your trip itinerary, HL Assurance offers above average trip cancellation and delay coverage out of its peers and it offers the highest medical expense coverage out of the three, with S$50,000 of coverage. However, it is one of the more pricier options out of the 3 for annual plans, costing S$187 for an annual ASEAN plan.

Etiqa Tiq Travel Insurance

Best Value Travel Insurance for Seniors

  • Direct Asia: 40% off all plans + S$30 Prudential Gift Voucher

If you want to gain the most from your travel insurance, high value plans like Aviva, Direct Asia, Income and Allianz Travel offer the most coverage per dollar of premium for seniors due to their generous medical coverage and solid trip inconvenience coverage. Aviva Plus, Direct Asia 500 and Allianz Silver, specifically, offer competitive pricing that is below average with premiums that are 15-40% below their peers. At the same time, they offer above average medical expense coverage and trip inconvenience coverage.

Direct Asia is a good option if you are on a tight budget but you are still looking for more coverage than what typical budget travel insurance plans offer. The 500 plan is a top-tier plan that provides generous trip inconvenience coverage and can be a good option for multigenerational families since kids are covered for free and grandparents receive fairly generous coverage thanks to DirectAsia's already high coverage limits.

Aviva and Income (not the Pre-X plans) are good options for active or medically-focused senior travellers due to Aviva's flexible cancellation policies and Income's high medical benefits. For travellers looking for a high value budget plan, Income Classic offers the highest value out of budget-tiered plans. It is affordable and provides coverage limits high enough for the over 70 to compete with mid and even top-tier plans. In the same vein, Aviva is a high level mid-tier plan that offers very generous limits for medical coverage (the highest on the market for seniors over 70 years of age).

Allianz Travel is a good option for travel inconvenience coverage as it offers up to S$15,000 of trip cancellation coverage and S$12,000 of baggage loss coverage and can work for seniors who travel with expensive belongings.

Singlife with Aviva

Best Medical Coverage Travel Insurance

Most travel insurance companies cut coverage if you or someone you are insuring is over the age of 70. However, Aviva and Income have some of the most lenient coverages when it comes to medical claims.

If you are on a tight budget but still want a plan that provides ample medical coverage, Aviva is a clear winner as it doesn't cut domestic medical, international medical and personal accident coverage for elderly policyholders. It also offers a variety of medical benefits including dental expenses, emergency telephone expenses, quarantine and hospital visit expenses.

If you are travelling with pre-existing conditions, Income's Pre-X is one of the three insurers who will let you claim for medical expenses arising from your pre-existing conditions. Its Pre-X plans let you claim for medical expenses due to your pre-existing condition while abroad and continue treatment once back home in Singapore. You can also claim your medical expenses either under travel inconvenience (i.e. you had to cancel your trip due to a pre-existing condition), although that comes with a 50% co-payment. Lastly, you'll receive other benefits like travel agency insolvency, repatriation and missed connections coverage. However, you should note that annual Pre-X policies can only be purchased over the phone.

Most travel insurance companies cut coverage if you or someone you are insuring is over the age of 70. However, Aviva and NTUC have some of the most lenient coverages when it comes to medical claims.

Best Trip Inconvenience Coverage

If you are looking for maximum peace of mind regarding your itinerary and baggage, Allianz and Aviva's travel insurance plans may be a great fit.

If your budget is not restricted, Allianz Travel's Gold plan offers the highest trip inconvenience coverage on the market with S$25,000 of trip cancellation coverage, S$1,500 trip delay coverage and S$15,000 of baggage loss/damage coverage. If you are willing to sacrifice some of the limits in exchange for more affordable prices, you can opt for Allianz's Silver plan. It is still a very solid plan with S$12,000 of baggage loss or damage coverage, S$15,000 of trip cancellation, and S$15,000 of trip postponement coverage.

If you care more about flexibility rather than coverage amounts, Aviva's Prestige and Plus travel insurance plans are great choices as they let you cancel your trip or change your travel dates for any reason and offers up to S$8,000 of baggage loss and S$3,000 of theft coverage. To get the best value, we recommend you look at the Prestige plan, as it costs below average for top-tier plans. However, regardless of the plan, Aviva is quite expensive so it may not be the best fit for travellers on a tight budget.

Travel & COVID-19 Updates

As of June 15, 2020, all Singaporeans are advised to avoid travel. Several countries are experience increasing rates of infection and may be risky for travel. However, there is an exception for essential business and official travel operating under the Green/Fast Lane arrangements. Furthermore, please note that if you are planning a trip and have recently bought a travel insurance policy, you may not be eligible for claims related to Covid-19. Furthermore, upon return to Singapore, you will be require to serve a mandatory Stay-Home Notice (SHN) as well as a test.

Please note as of July 19th, 2020, travellers who stayed the past 14 days in Australia (besides Victoria), Brunei Darussalam, Macao SAR, mainland China, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam no longer need to serve their SHN at an SHN Dedicated Facility. Instead, Singaporean citizens and permanent residents can serve their 14 day SHN at home. To learn more please click here .

Methodology

To find the best travel insurance plans for seniors, we analysed pricing and coverage from over 100 different travel insurance plans. We took into consideration medical coverage for seniors who are over 70, whether there were any benefits that were excluded for seniors over a certain age as well as trip cancellation benefits. We also looked into plans that offered pre-existing conditions, since there is a higher chance that this segment of travellers will want coverage for ongoing medical conditions. Lastly, we looked at price. Since senior travellers may be retired and without a steady income stream, we wanted to find plans that were affordable in addition to providing useful benefits.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Singapore

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. However, it's highly advised for all travelers to consider obtaining a thorough travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and delays. Why? There are several reasons:

Singapore, known for its top-notch healthcare, might surprise you with unexpected medical costs. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, you're offered coverage and assistance for any unforeseen life events.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.

Despite Singapore's efficient travel network, unexpected delays can happen. The "Trip Delay" benefit comes in handy, covering extra expenses like meals and accommodation so your travel hiccups do not turn into headaches.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Singapore?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Singapore will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Singapore hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Singapore’s experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Singapore's stunning landscapes in a rental car. For avid golfers planning a swing through Singapore’s world-class golf courses, the "Loss Golf Days" benefit is exclusive to Platinum plan policyholders. This optional benefit steps in to offer reimbursement for pre-paid golf arrangements that you might be unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Offers coverage when unexpected health issues happen, like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, or allergic reactions.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Comes into play when you urgently need to leave a place for reasons not related to health. This coverage may assist with evacuation in non-medical situations, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.

Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for travelers to Singapore?

Entry into Singapore for all travelers is permitted without the need for entry approvals, pre-departure tests, on-arrival tests, quarantine, or mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
