Hypermarkets and supermarkets

Product range at the supermarkets, carrefour supermarkets in dubai, spinneys supermarkets in dubai, lulu supermarkets in dubai, mmi liquor store, african + eastern dubai.

If you are on holiday in Dubai, you should of course eat and drink regularly during the day. You can of course go to the many restaurants in Dubai, coffee shops or at the fast food restaurants in the food courts of the shopping centers. But you can also go to the supermarket for your bottles of water, soft drinks, sandwiches and all sorts of other foods. Especially for bottled water, a quick visit to the supermarket is ideal for if you are thirsty. This is not only much cheaper, it is also a nice experience because the shelves of the supermarkets in Dubai are full of products that we are not used to in Europe.

Especially the smaller supermarkets in the older part of Dubai around the Dubai Creek and Deira are full of special products from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This is because many migrants who work in Dubai live in these neighborhoods and like to buy products from their home countries to cook local dishes.

In Dubai you will find a few huge supermarkets, also called hypermarkets. Next to the food and drinks, these hypermarkets also include electronics such as washing machines and TVs, clothing, shoes and household items. Most hypermarkets in Dubai can be found in the large shopping centers on the ground floor near the entrance to the parking garage. These supermarkets are known for their extremely long opening hours from early in the morning until late at night. A number of hypermarkets are open until midnight even on weekends.

Supermarket in Dubai

The most famous hypermarket in Dubai is the Carrefour. In total, Carefour has six huge supermarkets in Dubai, including in the Mall of the Emirates and in the Deira City Center shopping center. Those who have often been to France on holiday may recognize the Carrefour, this original French supermarket chain now has more than 15,000 branches in more than 30 countries and is known for its huge supermarkets. Carefour not only has hypermarkets in Dubai, there are also various smaller supermarkets in the French retail chain throughout the city.

Next to Carefour, the LuLu retail chain also has a couple hypermarkets in Dubai. Beside to the huge hypermarkets, there are also countless smaller supermarkets in Dubai, from medium to very small. The smallest supermarkets mainly sell “fast food” such as crisps, snacks, biscuits, chocolate and soft drinks. Products for self-cooking are often not found in these small supermarkets that sometimes do not exceed 7 by 7 meters. For this you really have to go to medium-sized or large supermarkets.

The medium-sized supermarkets in Dubai are mostly from the retail chains Spinneys, Geant, Waitrose, Hyper Panda and Choithram. Spinneys is a store chain that is mostly focused on Western expats with an assortment with plenty of Western products.

For those who really can not do without his favorite brands, soft drinks, cookies and chocolate you will be just fine in Dubai. Virtually all well-known brands such as Coca-Cola, Lays chips, Mars, Oreo and Milka chocolate are available in large and small supermarkets.

The vegetable departments of the hypermarkets are a joy to visit for food lovers. The most exotic fruits can be found, from passion fruit to the melon (kiwano) and a doerian to the sour bag (sourop). Is a fruit species unknown to you? You can of course buy one to taste it and that will make you an experience richer. Of course you can find the famous fruits such as bananas, apples, kiwis and oranges in the supermarkets of Dubai.

In addition to standard items such as fruit and vegetables, meat and bread, the large supermarkets also sell a wide range of imported products from countries such as Europe, America and Australia. For example, you can buy real Dutch Gouda cheese or mozzarella and ham from Italy without too much searching in many large supermarkets. And if you look closely in the large supermarkets, you will even find biscuits and waffles that have been imported from Belgium. The disadvantage of these imported products is that the prices are quite high in relation to those of the local products.

Despite the fact that the United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country and the sale of pork is officially prohibited, the supermarkets in Dubai do sell pork. The pork is in a closed section of the supermarket so that Muslims are not confronted with pork while shopping.

Buying alcohol in Dubai

Those looking for alcohol in Dubai in the supermarket will return home disappointed. In fact, no alcohol is sold in all supermarkets in the United Arab Emirates, so you will not find a shelf full of beer and wine in Dubai. Yet you can buy beer in the supermarket, but it is alcohol free. A brand that represents strongly in Dubai in the alcohol-free beer beer is the Dutch beer brand Bavaria. Next to the normal alcohol-free beer, you can also get 0.0% beer with flavors of strawberry, apple and lemon. So there are various flavors that you can choose from.

There are only two chain stores that can officially sell alcohol according to the law, these are African + Eastern and MMI. To be able to buy alcohol in this shop you need to have an alcohol passport, a so-called “Red Card”.

The stores of MMI and African + Eastern can mostly be found in or next to a Spinneys supermarket, you can find them in the Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Batuta Mall (Andalusia area), Al Safa (in the Spinneys), the Marina Walk. in the Dubai Marina (next to the Spinneys) and the Jumeraih Beach Road (next to the Spinneys). You recognize the stores fairly quickly because the windows of the shops are sealed so that Muslims have no view of the alcohol bottles when they walk past. Check the website of MMI and African + Eastern for more information about all the locations of the stores.

Do you not have a Red Card alcohol passport and would you still like to buy alcohol in Dubai? Then you have to buy a bottle of alcohol on arrival at the airport. At both Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport you can buy alcohol in stores before and after customs. The range of alcohol at the airports is huge and almost all famous brands of beer and liquor such as Heineken, Fosters, Bacardi, Johnny Walker and Smirnoff are available.

If you are in the mood for a glass liquor, wine or beer and you have not bought anything at the airport, then you can go to a large number of clubs, cafes and restaurants in Dubai that have an alcohol license. These are mainly the popular clubs and bars in Western hotels. Keep in mind that the alcohol in the nightlife in Dubai is quite pricey. In terms of price you can expect rates from 8 to 10 dollar for a glass of beer and an average of 10 dollar for a glass of wine.

Table of Contents

10 Best Supermarkets in Dubai & Hypermarkets

Supermarkets are typically smaller than Hypermarkets but can still be very large. However, they focus more on selling fresh produce, grocery items, and general merchandise.

Hypermarkets, on the other hand, are larger stores that sell various items, including food, clothing, furniture and electronics. They are more like department stores than traditional supermarkets as they offer a wider range of products and services.

Here is a quick summary of the top 10 supermarkets in Dubai:

  • Spinneys – A popular but premium chain of supermarkets with an extensive selection of international products
  • Waitrose – A high end originally British supermarket that stocks a lot of international products
  • Union Co-op – Offers shoppers competitive prices on everyday essentials
  • Geant – Features a diverse range of products at great value prices
  • Viva – A new supermarket chain which is focused on bringing consumers own brand cheaper groceries
  • Carrefour – One of the largest supermarkets in Dubai, offering a wide range of fresh produce and food items
  • Lulu Hypermarket – An affordable option for grocery shopping with many discounts available
  • Al Maya Supermarkets – Smaller supermarkets focused on Middle Eastern goods
  • Choithrams – A more premium supermarket with a large amount of imported goods
  • West Zone – Popular in South Asian areas with produce that is more focused on imports from including Indian and Filipino foods.

Carrefour, Lulu & Union Co-op are the largest operators of Hypermarkets in Dubai. Carrefour’s largest store is at the Mall of the Emirates and offers almost every good you can think of! Lulu also has a large hypermarket at the back Mall of Emirates.

Information about the top 10 supermarkets in Dubai

Spinneys has an unusual history, as it was founded by Albert Spinney, a British ex-military personnel selling British goods to Mandate Palestine and later opening stores in Egypt plus other British territories. Their first store in the UAE was opened in 1942, but their first supermarket was in Deira in 1962.

Without a doubt, Spinneys has some of the best quality fresh produce in Dubai . Their fruits taste amazing, there’s lots of variety and they have some rare items you won’t find anywhere else.

The only downside of Spinneys is that this amazing quality does come at a higher cost. It is known as one of the most expensive supermarkets in Dubai. So, if you have the money, Spinneys is definitely worth spending extra on.

It is also one of the few supermarkets that sells pork in the UAE.

There are many branches across Dubai and even a branch inside Dubai Airport Terminal, so you can easily grab something when you land.

Waitrose is a historical British supermarket, founded in 1904. Their first Dubai branch was in 2008 in Dubai Marina, shortly followed by Dubai Mall.

Waitrose is owned by the same group as Spinneys in Dubai, so you will see similar products to Spinneys, and you can expect the same high quality.

Waitrose has fewer locations and tends to be smaller than Spinney, which is more focused on the higher-end gourmet market. If you’re a fan of Waitrose’s brand products, you’ll find the largest selection of Waitrose products here.

Union Co-op

Union Co-op was founded in 1982 in the UAE, so it’s a real homegrown brand. Their very first branch was in Satwa in 1984.

Mostly found in Emirati areas, this is a decent-sized supermarket and offers a very good range of produce. Offering a mix of local produce at affordable prices along with more expensive imported items.

They have a large selection of gourmet Italian and French items you may not find elsewhere.

Due to being in Emirati areas, you’ll also find a selection that caters to local tastes. This includes rare and expensive kinds of honey along with a wide range of dates.

If you’re looking for good value and quality or want produce from UAE farms, this is the best for a balance of value and quality.

Geant is part of a Casino Group from France. Their first store opened in 1898 after the founder had run another successful grocery store. They opened their first supermarket in Dubai in 2005.

Geant’s presence in the UAE has gotten smaller over the years, but they still have some supermarkets and hypermarkets along with expanding into petrol station express shops.

Their hypermarkets offer large home goods, electronics, furniture and groceries. The produce is of good quality and reasonable prices.

Viva is newer concept and supermarket to the UAE, since 2018. Already popular in Europe where they create their own branded products to be sold at a cheaper price with the same high quality compared to branded goods.

Its popularity in the UAE has really grown since its opening, offering affordability compared to other supermarket chains. The stores are typically smaller and you’ll find many items from 5 to 15 AED mark.

However, check item sizes as some items seem to be a good price but are smaller than what you’d get in a traditional supermarket for the same or cheaper price.

The French giant has a global presence and is one of the most well known supermarket brands. Inspired by the US supermarket style, Carrefour opened their first store in France in 1963. Their first store in the UAE was in Deira in 1995.

One of it’s most well known branches is its huge hypermarket in the Mall of Emirates .

Carrefour is known for its affordability and large range of items. They stock a largee amount of own brand products coming from Europe.

Their fresh produce, however, I don’t find to be the highest quality but it is very affordable, so this is a good option if you’re a more price conscious shopper.

Lulu Hypermarket

Lulu is another homegrown UAE brand with its first store opening in Abu Dhabi in 1995. Yusuff Ali, originally from India, founded Lulu and was one of the first recepients of the UAE Golden Visa.

Lulu is known for its frequent special offers that drive the crowds to shop at Lulu, especially for electronic goods and home items. It is typically one of the busiest supermarkets you’ll go to in Dubai.

For groceries it has similar pricing to the other large supermarket chains, this is different to its prescene in Saudi where it is a more premium retailer with many imported food items.

Al Maya Supermarkets

Al Maya group is also founded in the UAE with its first store in the Emirate of Ajman in 1982. They also produce their own branded goods.

Their supermarkets tend to smaller than the hypermarkets seen in Dubai by other groups but offering a larger store and selection compared to a local grocery store.

They’re a good middle ground with good quality produce and specialist items that your wouldn’t typically find in a smaller local grocery store.

Choithrams is a globally established supermarket, with its first branch opening in 1943 in Sierra Leone. It’s first UAE store was in 1974 and it also has one of the only entire female run branches in the UAE.

Another one that is seen as a premium supermarket with a focus on imported goods.

They also do frequent special offers , and it’s worth keeping an eye on these, as you can get some really good bargains.

Regular goods, on the other hand, are usually higher priced than their competitors and I find the quality isn’t as good. So this is why it’s lower down on the list of the best supermarkets in Dubai.

West Zone was founded in 20015 in the UAE, another home grown brand in the market. Their very first branch was in Mirdif.

If you’re from South Asia and in Dubai, then you’ll definitely know this supermarket brand. Focused on importing South Asian goods . If you’re a fan of Indian or Filipino food, then this is a great supermarket for getting items that you may not be able to find elsewhere.

The supermarket offers cheap prices however I’ve found the quality of especially fresh produce can be a bit hit and miss. Also in some areas, I’ve found the supermarkets aren’t as well looked after compared to other brands. In Dubai you get used to everything being spotless!

Different Types of Supermarkets in Dubai

travel supermarket dubai

Dubai has a wide variety of supermarkets to choose from, ranging from traditional corner stores to large hypermarkets. Depending on what you’re looking for, there is sure to be something that meets your needs. You’ll also find gourmet food markets and organic food markets in Dubai.

The leading gourmet food markets in Dubai include Jones the Grocer, which features a selection of artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, and gourmet deli items. For organic produce and natural foods, The Organic Foods & Cafe on Sheikh Zayed Road is a great option along with The Farm in Souq Manzil and Ripe Organic Market with locations across Dubai

You’ll even find farmers’ markets such as Organic Farmers Souq, previously known as Farmers Market on The Terrace. This was one of my favourites to visit every weekend as you’ll find really fresh produce direct from the farms which lasts a lot longer than those from the supermarket. You’ll even find things like independent vegan ice cream sellers and pop-up coffee shops. Cause who doesn’t want a latte to drink while they wander around at 9 am?

The Spice Souk is another popular spot for unique food items, offering spices, herbs, nuts and seeds from around the world. Though it definitely is more touristy here, so you can end up paying a high premium if you don’t haggle.

  • Jones the Grocer
  • Marks & Spencers Food
  • Park & Shop
  • Organic Shop on Sheikh Zayed Road

Product Ranges at Grocery Stores in Dubai

travel supermarket dubai

Grocery stores in Dubai offer shoppers a wide variety of products and services. From fresh produce to gourmet food items, shoppers can find everything they need in the many supermarkets and hypermarkets around the city. Many of these stores also feature unique products like organic foods, imported items, and more. Even items you might not expect in a Muslim country such as pork products.

One of the most popular things about Dubai is it’s large amount of product ranges and in particular its extensive selection of international items. Supermarkets like Carrefour, Spinneys and Lulu Hypermarket all stock products from around the world and offer shoppers great deals on imported goods. Many of these stores also have dedicated sections for speciality items like organic produce, gluten-free food and vegan options.

Though you won’t find alcohol in Dubai supermarkets, you can find drinks like energy drinks, juices, iced tea and none alcoholic wines. For alcohol in Dubai , you need to go to specialist shops, similar to off-licenses in the UK or liquor stores in the US. They typically only sell alcohol.

Tips for Shopping at Supermarkets in Dubai

Shopping at supermarkets in Dubai can be a great experience, but it helps to have some tips for getting the most out of your visit. Here are some top tips for shopping at supermarkets in Dubai:

1. Visit in the Morning : Most of the larger supermarkets and attached to malls such as Emirates Mall, which start to get busy from around 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon. Slowly increasing until the evening times when they are really crowded. So if you want to quickly get your groceries and easily find parking, go in the morning time. Especially on weekends!

2. Take your own bags : Since the 1st July 2022, Dubai introduced a plastic bag charge, so if you don’t want to pay the extra 25 fils per plastic bag. Make sure to take some of your own re-usable shopping bags. It’s definitely a good idea to always keep some in the car.

3. Pay by card to save money : So a weird quirk of Dubai is that often the supermarkets won’t give you the fils unless it’s a 50 fil or 25 fil, sometimes not even a 25 fil. So when shops price things at .99 or .94, they almost never give you the 1 fil or 6 fil change. Over time, this extra paying of fils can add up! So if you don’t want to lose them, pay with a card rather than cash.

4. Check the dates on items : A good way to make sure you’re getting the best value possible is to check the dates. It’s very common for supermarkets to put the shorter dates at the front and the longer dates at the back, So always do a good check before you out it in your basket.

5. Ask For Help : If you are having trouble finding something or don’t know which product to buy, be sure to ask for help from the store personnel. They will be more than happy to assist you with your shopping needs and can even point out any discounts or promotions that the store is currently offering.

How to Get the Best Deals on Groceries in Dubai

travel supermarket dubai

Shopping for groceries in Dubai can be a great experience due to the diverse range of products and services offered. However, shoppers should always keep an eye out for the best deals on their grocery items as it can be expensive in Dubai. I once saw a single onion being sold in Waitrose for 36 AED. Here are some tips for getting the best deals when grocery shopping in Dubai:

1. Shop around : Dubai can be expensive for certain items and different supermarkets can widely vary between prices! Even the location of the supermarket can change the prices of the items. So if you work in Downtown but live in Business Bay, you may find your grocery shops are cheaper in Business Bay for example. It can also help to compare prices online or visit several stores to get the cheapest prices.

2. Know Your Prices : Keep track of prices and check which different supermarkets are cheaper for those items. It’s also good to check for deals as some supermarkets may be better for deals but more expensive for regular priced groceries. Alternating grocery shops can help, as long as you know your prices. This way, you can ensure that you are getting the best deal possible.

3. Shop late at night for deals : Okay you’ll have to brave the crowds for this one unless you do it on a Monday or Tuesday night but many supermarkets reduce items that have a short use or sell by date on the evenings. Particualrly M&S, is known for reducing its prices on items needing to be sold usually around 9 pm. You can usually save around 50% off but sometimes even more!

4. Look For Promotions : Supermarkets often have promotions and discounts on certain items, so keep an eye out for these offers when you are shopping. Many have booklets they release on a set day or PDFs online which share the offers of the week, So it’s best to go either on the day deals are released or the lastest the day after, as really good deals can go out of stick fast.

5. Collect loyalty points : Many stores will also offer loyalty programs where shoppers can save money on their purchases over time. Carrefour offers such a problem and you can then use those points for discounts off your shopping bill. Some supermarkets such as Union Co-op offer discounts to card holder members so you’ll save right away just by signing up for one of the customer cards.

6. Buy In Bulk : Many stores in Dubai offer bulk discounts on certain items if you buy them in packs or larger items, so it pays to take advantage of these deals if they are available. Of course, make sure that you are only buying items which won’t go off before you have a chance to consume them! Also double check the price per item as sometimes the larger items don’t always work out cheaper. So don’t be afraid to get the calculator on your phone out.

7. Try Local Products : Shoppers looking for a bargain should try local products as these are often cheaper than imported goods, especially those from Western countries. Most supermarkets stock locally produced fruits, vegetables, dairy products and more. Though not all local versions may taste the same as those you are used to know back home.

8. Shop Online : Shopping online is incredibly popular in Dubai and there are many websites which offer great deals on groceries or other items such as electronics or apparel. Online retailers even deliver directly to your door, making it even easier to get your shopping done without having to leave home!

Some of my favourite online retailers for deals:

  • Brands for Less (Discounted designer clothes)
  • Kibsons (Fruit and vegetable delivery)

Final Thoughts on Best Supermarkets & Hypermarkets in Dubai

Shopping for groceries in Dubai can be a great experience, with the wide range of products and services available. Whether you’re looking to buy fresh produce from your local supermarket or shop online for bulk discounts on imported goods. There are plenty of ways to get the best deals on your grocery shopping in this vibrant city. Keep these tips in mind when visiting different supermarkets around Dubai, they will help ensure that you always get the most bang for your buck! With so many options available, it is easy to find something suitable no matter what type of shopper, eater or cooker you are. So go ahead and explore all that Dubai has to offer. Happy shopping!

1.The Needs-To-Know:

Whether you are looking to relax or explore almost anything is possible in Dubai. Due to its exponential growth and vast tourism industry, there are constant new additions to the already-long list of cultural institutions. It may be in the middle of the desert but think again if you thought skiing was out of the question. Visit the Dubai Frame, a 500 feet tall picture frame offering visitors panoramic views of the city. Choose from an abundance of theme and water parks including the Global Village & Aquaventure home to record breaking waterslides and marine wildlife interaction. When to Visit

With year-round sunshine a Dubai Holiday guarantees a warm trip, it’s just a matter of how hot you would like the weather to be. Visiting in Summer will see highs of up to 40°C whilst Winter trips are a comfortable 20°C+.

Usually, October to April provides the most pleasant option with just a small chance of wind and rain during January and February, producing temperatures of around 25-28°C. From May, these temperatures really rocket until September, averaging 35°C with common 40°C days. However, Dubai offers plenty of incentives to visit during these hotter months, including shopping festivals in air-conditioned malls, indoor attractions and fantastic value offers.

What to Pack

As mentioned above, a Dubai holiday will be a hot holiday regardless of what time of the year you visit, therefore breathable and light clothing is essential. It is also worth having a cover up item for when you visit the malls or hotels, as all indoor places are fitted with air conditioning.

Dubai is a liberal city and has become a hotspot for holidays, however, it is good to bear in mind that Dubai is a Muslim destination, so respectful dress code outside of the resort/hotel will be necessary. For example, when visiting the malls, women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and the knees and if visiting any mosques or Islamic sights women must wear a head covering.

Ramadan 2023

Ramadan is a month-long holy fast, whereby Muslims do not consume food or drink during sunlight hours in celebration of prayer and reflection. During Ramadan, from dawn till dusk, Dubai sees an industrial shift that travellers should respect, many businesses reduce their working hours and so checking opening/closing times when visiting during Ramadan is essential.

Daytime Dubai during Ramadan is much quieter than other months, however the city comes to life after dark when Muslims break their fast. Many travellers recommend visiting Dubai during Ramadan due to the abundance of cultural offerings combined with an overwhelming sense of togetherness. Festivities are truly inclusive, and travellers are able to experience Emirati hospitality at its finest.

The sighting of the Moon determines the exact dates of Ramadan; however, it is estimated to start between the 22 nd  March and 21 st  April 2023.

What should tourists be aware of during Ramadan?

Although most restaurants remain open during daylight hours, out of respect it is customary to refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public. Family is highly prioritised during Ramadan and although schools and businesses reduce their hours to accommodate for this, the community atmosphere from social festivities at markets, malls, beaches, and parks make for unforgettable ‘night-life’ experiences. Ramadan is a memorable month in Dubai whether you are Muslim or not, as a traveller remain respectful but embrace the cultural celebration, wishing those around you “Ramadan Mubarak” - a blessed Ramadan.

2. Dubai Highlights

Whether you are looking to relax or explore almost anything is possible in Dubai. Due to its exponential growth and vast tourism industry, there are constant new additions to the already-long list of cultural institutions. The opportunities are endless and whether it’s an action-packed day trip or a vibrant night out, Dubai has you covered.

3. Things to Do

Burj khalifa.

Standing just over 828m high, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and one of Dubai's must-visit attractions. This distinguished building is located in the heart of the city surrounded by shops, malls and restaurants. The magnitude and scale of the structure when looking from the ground up is magnificent, but the views from the observation deck are indescribable. Along with jaw-dropping views of the city, visitors can enjoy a memorable meal from the highest dining setting in the world: Atmosphere. For morning coffee in the clouds or a sunset cocktail session, visitors can indulge at the Sky Lounge, providing 360-degree views of Dubai.

The Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain

Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa, is the world's largest choreographed fountain display, where powerful jet streams soar as high as 150m in the air and dance in time to musical numbers. Stop by in the evening when displays begin at sunset and take place every 30 minutes, until the final song plays at 11pm. The Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar restaurants overlook the fountain arena, serving the ultimate dinner with a view, a Dubai must!

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah

The largest man-made islands in the world and a triumph of human ingenuity. One of the first attractions that put Dubai on the map. Both Locals and tourists alike are drawn to The Palm's vast cluster of high-end hotels, including Waldorf Astoria , Fairmont , One&Only , Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and, perhaps most notably, Atlantis, The Palm .

Getting to the Palm Jumeirah is simple, thanks to the monorail running down the 'trunk', which connects to the mainland's tram system. Grab a bite to eat from food trucks lining the Palm Boardwalk, or take in the seaside sunset whilst dining at The Pointe.

The Dubai Desert

The Dubai Desert

A must visit on a Dubai holiday is The Dubai Desert, an oasis less than a 20-minute drive away from the modern streets of Downtown Dubai leading you into the sand ocean where it is clean, white, and fine, consisting of crushed shell and coral. For the adventurers of the group a desert safari should be firmly on the agenda, packed with adrenaline inducing activities such as quad biking and sandboarding. For those seeking a luxury desert adventure, Heritage Dinner Safari takes guests dune driving in a vintage 4x4, whilst offering more tame activities including henna painting and camel riding.

You may end up liking the vibe in the desert and want to stay a little longer, so treat yourself to an unforgettable night amid the dunes at Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa or Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa.

Modern developments have added a contemporary touch to old areas, with one of those including the stunning Dubai Creek. Offering the best of both worlds, Dubai Creek is a great spot to visit with your family or partner, for a stunning walk through the Old Souks to check out the awe-inspiring gold markets.

Hit the Beach JBR

Dubai’s beaches will provide you with guaranteed sunshine, warm seas, and long stretches of hot, white sand. The luxury doesn’t stop there, with optional additions including four-poster cabanas and waiter service. Not to mention, the top-end hotels often have a private beach club, which non-guests can use along with their swimming pools and bars for a fee ifyou’d like to experience some of Dubai’s world-renowned seven-star luxury for the day.

Otherwise, Kite Beach is a public beach known best in the city for kitesurfing, while the Beach JBR is fit for both trendsetters and family groups alike, as there is even an inflatable assault course to keep your little ones occupied. There are also lots of nearby restaurants and a market nearby, making this the perfect day-trip location. Dubai’s beaches have something for everyone, making this the perfect holiday destination for all ages and interests.

Jebel Ali can only be described as an underrated hidden gem, found only by those who really want to seek the complete Dubai holiday experience. It is known as a thriving commercial port area of Dubai, around 35km southwest from the city. Given Jebel Ali’s historic establishment, this attraction also boasts the world’s largest experience resort, where an industrial landscape transforms into a stage for dynamic sports and beachside bliss.

One of the most long standing and largest resorts in the emirate – the JA Jebel Ali Beach Resort has a lovely private beach, golf course and a myriad of other leisure attractions. Jebel Ali is also the new home of a dazzling new attraction - Dubai Parks and Resorts, which is the first integrated resort destination in the region. Opening in late 2016, Dubai Parks and Resorts is home to a wealth of resorts and attractions, including LEGOLAND® resort and waterpark, the Motiongate™ Dubai resort and renowned Bollywood Parks™, as well as Riverland, for all your shopping and restaurant needs - so you’re sure to have a jam-packed itinerary planned for your trip.

We promise you; you will never be bored here.

4. Nightlife in Dubai

Dubai nightclubs and party life attracts internationally successful DJs, performers and musicians, Dubai more than earns its reputation as an upmarket party destination. Dubai's working week finishes on a Thursday, with Friday and Saturday their weekend. Usually, mid-week Ladies Nights offer free entry and free drinks to female visitors, and you party out past midnight – clubs don’t close until 03:00.

Do not be fooled - the party lifestyle isn’t exclusive to the night times. With panoramic views, you can grab a cocktail on the 71st and 72nd floor of the JW Marriott at the breath-taking Vault Bar, or day-drink away at the luxurious midday brunches at pretty much every hotel in the city. For this reason, the Dubai party scene is not to be missed.

Dubai is known for its international food scene, potentially due to the 180 different nationalities residing there. Home to famous TV chefs, exquisite mixologists, and glamorous interiors, Dubai’s restaurants have become a hot spot for celebrities all over the world. With it’s growing Emirati cuisine you can experience traditional Arabian dishes, whilst their street food to their Michelin star restaurants serve up an array of sumptuous delicacies for every cultural craving. The range of culinary experience Dubai offers is one of the most expansive in the world, from foodies to fussy eaters... Bon Appetit!

When thinking of the term “brunch”, your mind may be drawn to your seemingly endless Instagram feed of avocado on toast pictures on a Sunday morning. However, when you’re in Dubai - brunch takes on a whole new meaning. Friday Brunch is an institution that will never go out of style. Friday brunch can only be described as the all-inclusive banquet of your wildest dreams. Yes, really. With a variety of options to choose from across the city, it has become the week's main event that is not to be missed.

With so many options to choose from, it’s not surprising that visitors find it pretty hard to decide on just one place for their Dubai brunch experience. So, whether your brunch goals are to chill by the Jumeirah beaches, to spend your Fridays partying, or maybe even to devour as much food as possible, we assure you there is an experience for all tastes. In a sentence, Dubai brunches are like epic feasts, amazing parties and endless entertainment extravaganzas all rolled together, dipped in chocolate, and served up with fireworks on a massive plate. Almost all hotels and restaurants offer this blow-out meal on Fridays; so, ask your hoteliers for their favourite recommendations, they will be more than happy to advise.

Deep-rooted Islamic traditions are the UAE's lifestyle, and this is definitely the case when it comes to fashion. Men traditionally dress in a long white dress, namely the Dishdasha, or may also wear other clothing items, including a white headdress known as a Ghutra, and an Agla - which is a rope worn around the head to keep the Ghutra in place.

On the other hand, the Emirati women typically wear Abayas, which are traditionally a long black cloak - however these can be embellished and adapted into different styles for fashion purposes. Women also wear Sheyla’s, or more commonly known as a Hijab, wrapped around their head. Whilst these are the traditional forms of dress, with the modernity’s of the city, Dubai has become extremely diverse - so these traditions may vary from place to place, or person to person.

7. Nature and Wildlife

With it’s reputation steeped in glamour, super cars, seven-star luxury and modern architecture, you’d be forgiven for overlooking nature and wildlife when planning your trip to Dubai. You can also Immerse yourself in nature when you make your journey to the Al Qudra oasis to take in the sights and sounds of Love Lake Dubai. This popular spot consists of two, large, heart-shaped lakes connected to each other.

We have listed some places for you to explore if you are looking to add some Wildlife and nature vibes to your Dubai holiday. Perfect for Families looking to explore together, or for anyone with interest in nature who is looking to unwind!

This spectacular motor sport is sponsored by the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, which has a major organisational role in the event.

Throughout the Challenge, participants face two days of scrutineering and documentation by judges, which is typically scheduled on Thursday and Friday, and then a qualification event referred to as the "Super Special Stage" is held on Saturday to determine the starting order of the racers. On Sunday morning, the competition begins in earnest when the drivers depart from Yas Marina Circuit, where the initial Rally Headquarters are located and begin five days of driving through the Empty Quarter Liwa Desert. The 2017 race is scheduled to start April 1st and commence on April 6th.

Although Dubai is always a beautiful and interesting holiday destination, those who are not accustomed to excessive heat and humidity must take weather into consideration when planning a trip. Because of the summer months' intensity, winter is the best time to visit Dubai. November through April is perfect for sightseeing and other outdoor activities.

Throughout the month of November, temperatures typically fall somewhere in the mid-20s Celsius and rise approximately 10 degrees by March. Evenings are somewhat cool and windy, but most winter days offer abundant sunshine.

These near-perfect temperatures allow tourists to indulge in many popular Dubai activities, such as beach combing, sightseeing, desert safaris and outdoor shopping. The winter months are considered peak tourist season in Dubai and for this reason, those who are planning to visit the area in winter should make reservations for flights and accommodations well in advance. January and February are Dubai's rainy season, but showers are typically short-lived and do not have a substantial impact on one's holiday.

Summertime is considered May through October, and this is also the area's off-season. This is because temperatures often soar as high as 40 degrees Celsius, with exceptionally high humidity. This makes the outdoors quite uncomfortable throughout the entire region. Therefore, although prices are significantly lower during the summer season, it is difficult to enjoy everything the area has to offer when heat is excessive.

Another important consideration for travellers who are planning a visit to Dubai is the religious holiday of Ramadan. This holiday involves a month of fasting, and activities such as drinking, eating and smoking are prohibited in many shared or public areas. Holidaymakers who are visiting the area at this time are required to observe the rules of Ramadan. Whilst specific Ramadan dates vary from one year to the next based on the Islamic calendar, the holiday is expected to take place between the months of July and September until 2020.

Are Dubai supermarkets expensive? Prices in Dubai supermarkets vary depending on the brand and the product . While local products are generally cheaper, imported goods might be priced higher. I find the prices higher compared to the Western food prices, but of course, it depends on where you come from. However, most supermarkets offer regular discounts, making grocery shopping affordable for all.

Here is a list of average food prices in Dubai (September 2023):

Is There a Drive Through Supermarket in Dubai?

By Anna Duncan

Dubai is known for its innovation and luxury, so it’s no surprise that the city is home to some unique shopping experiences. One such experience that has caught the attention of residents and tourists alike is the drive through supermarket. Yes, you read that right – a supermarket where you can shop for groceries without even leaving your car!

The Concept

The concept of a drive through supermarket is simple yet revolutionary. Instead of walking through aisles and standing in long queues at the checkout counter, customers can simply drive up to designated areas where they can browse and pick their groceries from the comfort of their own vehicle.

How It Works

Step 1: Place an Order

To use a drive through supermarket, customers need to place an order in advance either through an app or by calling the supermarket directly. This allows the store to prepare your order and have it ready for pick up when you arrive.

Step 2: Drive Up

Once you arrive at the designated area of the supermarket, you will be guided by signs or attendants who will direct you to a parking spot. Make sure to have your order details ready for verification purposes.

Step 3: Collect Your Groceries

After parking your car, a staff member will approach your vehicle to verify your order details and hand over your groceries. Some Supermarkets even offer contactless delivery where staff members place the items directly into your trunk.

The Benefits

  • Convenience: The biggest advantage of a drive through supermarket is the convenience it offers. Customers can avoid long queues and the hassle of navigating crowded aisles.
  • Time-Saving: With a drive through supermarket, you can save valuable time that would otherwise be spent walking around the store and waiting in line at the checkout counter.
  • Weather Protection: Dubai’s scorching heat can make grocery shopping an uncomfortable experience. With a drive through supermarket, you can stay cool and comfortable in your air-conditioned car.
  • Safety: In times of pandemics or when you’re feeling unwell, a drive through supermarket provides a safer option for getting your groceries without exposing yourself to crowded places.

The Availability

Currently, there are several drive through Supermarkets operating in Dubai. Some popular options include Spinneys’ Drive-Thru at Mercato Mall, Choithrams’ Drive-Thru Supermarket in Al Wasl, and Carrefour’s Drive-Thru at Mall of the Emirates.

Please note that due to the dynamic nature of businesses in Dubai, availability and operating hours may change. It is always recommended to check with the specific supermarket for the most up-to-date information before planning your visit.

In conclusion, a drive through supermarket is an innovative and convenient way to shop for groceries in Dubai. It saves time, offers protection from harsh weather conditions, and provides a safer option during uncertain times. So next time you need to stock up on essentials, consider giving this unique shopping experience a try!
