Trek 4500 hardtail review

Clean, functional package

While the glamorous range-toppers attract attention, it’s usually the unsung and unremarkable mid-range bikes that generate most of a bike company’s profits. Trek know this, which is why the 4500 is the product of some time-proven design features and sensible, if unadventurous, hardware choices. It's a competent trail all-rounder that aims to please most riders, most of the time. But you could be having more fun for this kind of cash.

Ride & handling: Newbie-friendly but short on thrills

Trek has years of experience in turning out bikes that won’t scare off new riders. It shows in the 4500, which pulls off the deceptively simple feat of providing a ride position that’s both newbie-friendly and surprisingly efficient. The shortish top tube and longer stem won’t win any prizes for lively steering, but that’s hardly a major concern if you’re looking for your first steed. And the big stack of headset washers between the top bearing race and the underside of the stem leaves plenty of scope for adjustment as your tastes refine.

Out on the trail there’s little to disturb this feeling of confidence-inspiring can-do. Grippy tyres translate your efforts into forward progress without fuss, that extra large rear sprocket makes short work of steep climbs and 100mm of rock-swallowing travel up front means it’s hard to bite off more than the 4500 can chew. The only thing that’s missing is the liveliness that distinguishes fun frames from competent ones.

It’s also worth noting that with its relatively weighty build, conservative geometry and unforgiving wishbone rear end, the 4500 ploughs a furrow through – rather than skipping its way over – rougher sections of trail when the pressure’s on. That means it’s hard to get too excited about the 4500. It’s well built, doesn’t expect too much of you and gets the job done. But if you’re looking for thrills, this isn’t the bike to find them on.

Frame: Functional chassis is ready for a brake upgrade

True to form, there are no surprises in the 4500’s neatly welded chassis. You won’t find any wacky tube profiles or superfluous gussetry here – just well designed functionality. The hydroformed down tube features an extra bulge at the vulnerable head tube junction, doing away with the need for a separate welded strengthening gusset.

Tidy wishbone seatstays incorporate some neat rack and mudguard mounts that you’ll appreciate when commuting or touring, and there are two bottle boss mounts inside the main triangle. A cutaway disc mount, along with disc-compatible hubs, makes any future brake upgrade a relatively cheap and painless process, but you’ll have to live with the rim brake bosses on the seatstays if you make the switch.

Trek’s design team has gone with 100mm of travel up front, in the form of a RockShox Dart 2 coil-sprung fork. The difference between 80mm (3.14in) and 100mm (3.9in) at this price is largely down to your personal preferences, because ride quality is affected by factors such as tyres, frame weight and resilience just as much as it is by fork performance.

Having said that, the Dart 2 is a decent contender, with adjustable rebound damping and a lockout function – great if you’re hard on the pedals and concerned about excess bob. It can’t quite match more expensive forks for controlled plush and steering precision, but it’s a good first line of defence in the battle against blurred vision and loose fillings.

Equipment: Nine-speed cassette and Bontrager kit

You may have noticed the lack of disc brakes on the 4500 already, but don’t worry, there’s an upside to their omission. Instead of hydraulic discs as standard, you get a nine-speed cassette at the rear, driven by Shimano’s evergreen and very reliable Deore mech. That extra rear sprocket creates room for 34 teeth and a genuinely useful low gear.

The Tektro/Avid rim brake setup isn’t as powerful in the wet as the best disc alternatives, but it makes up for it with easy maintenance and a light, progressive lever feel. The Bontrager finishing kit is all good stuff too – particularly the open-treaded Jones ACX tyres, which cope well with the UK’s slimy trail conditions.

Bought this bike after a lot of research. It is a bit heavy, expected it to be lighter to be honest. I am 5'6" and the frame suites me like a tailored fit suit :) Did a couple of 40+ one day rides without any complain at all. We do not have much trails in Bangladesh but still managed to find some beaten down roads and pathway through villages and the bike just flies over the trails. I did some minor modification, changed the rear dera to deore xt from deore and the pedal to x-pedo (magnesium). The suntour xcm is quite good, takes the bumps and the potholes effortlessly. Lately, I have begun training on some moves like bunny hop, track stand and jumps and the bikes response is just perfect. Overall, a highly satisfied customer.

This is a great entry level bike that you can ride easily and not break your wallet. I raced BMX for a number of years so I consider myself to be an advanced rider. The bike can take everything I throw at it and wants more. It is not the lightest or the most advanced but if you want to ride and dont want to spend big $$$$ than this is the bike for you. No complaints at all.

Lower end components but good value for what you pay for.

Overall great bike for all that want a good solid bike with an affordable price.

Nimble, Durable

Heavy, Bontrager rims did not stay true

I bought this bike about 4 years ago because I got a great deal on it and was looking to replace a 2001 Haro that I was on. Over that time I replaced the rims, breaks, pedals, tires and cabling. Overall for an entry level bike this is a good one that I have put many of miles on from straight XC, technical rock gardens and even about a dozen adventure races. It has been a good bike and I have no regrets. It is heavy for a 26er but it has held up well through several uh-oh's along the way. Surprisingly the Dart 3 front fork on mine has never given me any problems and still works well. I have just ordered a Ti 29er as I have stuck to the racing and need a faster bike but will keep this one as a tight turner when the trails require it.

i got this bike as a christmas present to see if i liked racing so i raced 4 races in the beginner category and the bike rides amazingly for something so heavy and i was able to win state champs on this bike. i recently bought an 06 hifi deluxe but im keeping this one as a back up and for those smooth races. Make sure you change the fork though. even if it is something as simple as what i put on it is better than stock it is supposed to have a 100mm but on the lightest setting on the big hits it only gives about 50mm. all in all it is a great bike for the price and remember to change the cables regularly and it will shift a lot better than normal. I recommend this bike to the entry level racer but if you go further either upgrade or do an annual overhaul and regular tune ups.

The Frame. it's not a bike, it's a tank. in a good way. bought the 2012 green/black version, and this frame just takes on anything. rock solid, very comfortable. the suntour XCM fork is nice. it's not a "high end" fork ofcourse, but it does it's job quite good. especially for the money. the Hydraulic discs which came with the bike are more than enough anyone in an entry level needs. i actually wanted to settle for less (V-braking) since it appears thier far too advanced for me, but came to like them Very fast.

sattle which is hard, and Stock Tires that don't grip a lot. thier mainly for "off roads" but not really for "trails" where you need massive grips on rocks.

I'm very pleased with this bike. besides the neglectable fact that they look good, i fell with them couple of times, and nothing happend to the bike. most of the stock products that came with the bike are WAY more advanced that any "entry biker" like me actually needs, so it's a bike you can actually "grow on" and advance with. i searched forums around the world for about 2.5 weeks before purchasing them, almost bought the trek 4300, but after seeing bad reviews about thier fork, decided i'll pay a little extra, (but will get a lot more) the rear doere shifters in the back shifts smoothly and nicely, and the ACREA on the front, which is "less quality" is enough since you don't really use a lot of front gear changing. A very high quality bike for entry level, from a good american company, you really don't need more than this for an entry level, in my opinion.

Shocks, weight, reliability

I got the new 2012 4500D about a week ago. Its super comfortable and looks sick. I got the black,white and green. Disc brakes are a nice step up from my old GT pantera. I cant say that the bike is reliable. Within the first hour of riding it, the shocks blew(riding street). The shop gave me new shocks no problem. The next day I take it on some light trials and the shock blows again within an hour. Once again I'm without a bike for a week. Sick bike but shocks are garbage. I just hope the rest of the bike holds up like people says it does.

Seat is a bit hard but not that bad.

After over 15 years away from the sport. I decided that it was time to go big or go home. I shopped around for 4-5 weeks and test drove alot of bikes. I was looking for a well built mid-level bike. I tried the 2011 TREK 4500D and that was it. A pure fast rolling, light, great looking, well priced bike with an amazing warranty. I changed the tires and this bike is perfection. I got stopped a few times the first time out by other bikers that wanted to see what I was riding. 2011 was the year that TREK decided that they were going all out on the components. I didnt feel as if I was losing out and didnt see any component that needed to be changed at purchase. The seat is a bit hard but when you're in the trails, its so fast that you dont really get to use it that much. I find myself going out more and more and cant wait for the next ride. PERFECTION.

The fork is another dependable RockShox Dart, but with 80mm travel, disc and V-brake bosses, and a lockout switch, as well as rebound adjustment.

On the trail, the reach is roomy, thanks more to the long stem than the average top tube. Bar height looks high but that’s due to the long steerer tube and 4cm of spacer washers. Shuffling these and flipping the 10-degree stem lets you go XC low, or get down out of the wind for road work. While the 4500 comes with V-brakes, its wheels are ready for upgrading thanks to disc hubs – so you can skip cable discs and go straight to the hydraulics that any upgrader would want anyway.

The Bontrager Jones ACX tyres coped well with a variety of conditions, from armoured trails to thick mud. On road the rear end is commuter ready, like the Saracen, although you’ll need to bodge something to fit a full front mudguard.

Just getting into the sport. Looking for your opinion on these specs, especially the front suspension and disc brakes. Is this bike worth $700? I like the Trek 6000 but is not available in 16 inch. It's okay for starting out. If you get into to it and want to ride regularly (at least weekly), you'll get something better in the future. If you have a Giant dealer around you, they have some good value around this pricepoint.

look at the 6500, it's 380 more but it's a bike that will ride much better. Full Deore drivetrain with better cranks and wheels equals smoother shifting and a faster more durable ride. Also good upgrade to Rock Shox Tora SL. Spend more now and get a bike that you can ride for a long time instead of buyer a lesser quality bike and need to upgrade in a year or two. You do realize that a 15.5 and a 16 are virtually the same size?

I have to agree with MikeP about the size issue. You really should be sized though by a shop and be sure. Also if you're a young guy and still growing, going larger might be a smart thing to do. Just a thought. I would steer clear of the 4500 because of components group too. I like the 6500, but I think the components on the 6700 are far better than on both the 6500 and 6000. Also as Mike pointed out, you're better off spending a little more now than to spend a lot more upgrading. Keep in mind that you can get the price down a bit less than the msrp for sure. I just bought my 8000 for $1730 and the msrp is $2029. Planet Bike tried selling it to me for about $1900, so I would stay away from chain stores like them. I like Giant too, but for me to get the XT component group I would've had to spend big bucks($3000), and the next model down was $1000 and had crappy components (at least for me). Good luck.

The new 2011 Trek 6000 bike is out. With Avid Juicy 3 hydraulic disc brakes from the old BB5 disc brakes. and RockShox Tora from the RockShox dart. Finally some nice upgrades for the 6000.

I know how you feel. I just got into the sport. For what it's worth, I got the 2011 Giant Revel 0. It replaced the Yukon. I felt like I got more value on the Giant. So far I love this bike. It's held up to some good pounding so far. I also know that I will probably get a new bike in a few years, but this is all my budget allowed for right now. Buying a house real soon.

Is Trek 4500 Mountain Bike A Good Bike? [Trek 4500 Review]

Welcome to the Best Bike Select blog, this is about the Trek 4500, what its features are, what the Trek 4500’s pros and cons are, and what alternatives to the Trek 4500 are. What models can take their place?

You need more than just skills to become an intermediate mountain biker; you also need a proper mountain bike.

The Trek 4500 mountain bike that we are discussing today is not for sale on the company’s official website. It is an out-of-production mountain bike.

• Frame: Aluminum alloy

• What we liked about it: The 26″ size and the sturdy, stable frame for newbies.
• What we don’t like about it: Probably doesn’t ride very fast.

Climbing Experience

Trek has a knack for producing bikes that newbies will love, which proves why your first bike always comes from Trek. This mid-range bike is designed to please most riders most of the time, and you can have more fun for less cash.

I happened to borrow this bike from an old friend close to me, and after a long ride it still performs great. As soon as I got on it I could feel the uniqueness, the newbie friendliness and the amazingly efficient ride position. I set up this test in a suburban park on a greenway. There were some very steep uphills and fast swooping descents, but none of them were very bumpy, and they were gravelly.

I found it very easy to climb those uphill climbs, probably due to the dense gear ratios and the super small gear ratio of 22:34 minimum. In fact, I didn’t need to use the smallest gear ratio to get up there, and it also made me climb faster. The stiff rear end with the flexible fork allowed me to pedal better. In short, there was little to disturb my confident climbing drive.

The tires have very good grip, and I mean in all conditions. This uphill section is almost all dry and dusty, which is a nightmare for road bikes. In this case, the slick outer tires made them just skid in place. And the Trek 4500 tires’ powerful grip allowed it to effortlessly convert my entire effort into forward momentum.

Descending experience

The descent is also incredible. As long as you don’t race it against the real “speed stars”.

The RockShox Dart 2 may seem dated today, but in my experience I have to say, “This is really a great piece of work from a famous brand”. Even through the years, it doesn’t lose much of its performance and even surpasses the latest offerings from some cheaper brands.

After going over the top of the park’s greenway, I was faced with a winding downhill slope. The bumpy gravel road wasn’t as challenging as those rock gardens in the mountains that I’d otherwise have to mitigate by installing a pair of springs in my bike seat. Still, it wasn’t exactly flat. Fortunately, the fork has 100mm of cushioned travel, which allows me to handle the bumpy sections with ease.

I don’t think anyone would put their butt in the saddle while going down a hill fast, right? I often lift my butt up and put all my weight on my pedals. Because that keeps the overall center of gravity lower and also makes the body more stable during the descent. So I think a hardtail bike is perfectly capable on these mildly bumpy sections and doesn’t need a full suspension bike to engage. Full suspension bikes don’t handle flat rides and uphill sections very well, they are “crazy” for charging down hills.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike Specs

Alpha aluminum frame (5/5).

Today, this frame is mostly found in Trek’s $1000-$2000 mountain bike frames. The aluminum frame of the Trek 4500 is also very user-friendly.

Because of the relatively tight head tube angle, it has some advantages when climbing. The relatively short top tube allows for more flexible handling for easy steering, and subtle offsets in different terrains in the mountains can make a difference in the riding experience.

The rear triangle is also strong enough that bumpy sections have less of an impact on the Trek 4500’s frame strength.

27-speed Deore gearing (5/5)

Today, it’s rare to come across a mountain bike with 27 speeds. Instead, a 1X or 2X flywheel is used to power a 7-10 speed rear gear on the back wheel.

Of course, there are numerous comments about how much easier it is to ride with a 1X drivetrain.

But you can’t make such claims until you’ve experienced 27 speeds. 3X9 configurations are more difficult to adapt to 27 speeds, lengthening the learning curve, but there is still a segment of intermediate riders who prefer mountain bikes with more than 21 speeds.

This bike’s versatility stems from more than just its ability to adapt to different terrains.

100mm travel fork (4.5/5)

The Trek 820 still has a shock fork with 75mm of travel. The Trek 4500 bicycle, on the other hand, has a RockShox Dart 2, 100mm travel suspension fork.

Of course, the 4500 retains its 80mm travel fork for the 2007 model year. The RockShox Dart 2 shock fork excels on rough trails, and the not-too-soft, not-too-hard spring damping allows for continuous trail acceleration.

Bontrager Kit (4.5/5)

This is a classic Trek mountain bike kit that includes Bontrager handlebars, grips, and a stem. The kit is also durable and ergonomically designed for mountain bikers.

The handlebar is also made of a sturdy inner ring with a soft outer sleeve that wraps around the handlebar.

V-brakes (3.0/5)

Although the front and rear V-brakes are similar to disc brakes in terms of braking accuracy on general roads, they are not suitable for rocky roads when riding in the mountains.

When you have enough money, you can replace them with mechanical disc brakes or hydraulic disc brakes.

26×2.1″ Mountain Tires (3.5/5)

The Trek 4500 is slightly wider than the Trek 3500 or 3700, but less capable in the mountains than the popular 2.2″ or 2.4″d. It is an excellent choice for use in the woods or on trails.

The Trek 4500’s flexibility is maintained by the 26*2.1″ tires, but at the expense of some grip.

Other versions of the Trek 4500

We put the Trek 4500 to the test, and it’s a bike that can meet your commuting needs while still being well balanced for mountain riding. And, the durable frame is perfect for entry-level players to ride. If that’s the kind of bike you need to get a workout in, or to try to get into the mountains, it’s perfect for you.

In the meantime, we’ve found you other versions of this bike, the TREK MULTITRACK 7100. To be honest, they don’t share the same niche. However, the 7100 features a very comfortable riding geometry and adjustable angle stems with cruiser-style handlebars, making the whole bike presentable to the public in an extremely comfortable position. Obviously, it is not as suitable for riding in the green forests of the mountains as the Trek 4500. The bike is designed with thinner and smoother outer tires and a wide, comfortable spring-loaded saddle so that you can enjoy every ride for pleasure rather than speed.

Overall, if your quest for a bike is to ride in the city and replace your feet, the TREK MULTITRACK 7100 would be the comfortable choice. But if you have a slight desire to ride in the mountains and want to stay fit by riding on the weekends, we suggest you choose the Trek 4500.

Ultimately, we think the Trek 4500 is a good quality, novice-friendly mountain bike that will allow the rider to grow in skill.

We want to know what the bike’s frameset is capable of, how it’s going to make the rider feel, and if it can perform. With a good frameset, the bike will be lightweight, strong, and have excellent handling ability.

When it comes to mountain biking, you need the ability to get up and downhill efficiently. Having the right gearing can make easy work of this. We want to ensure the mountain bikes we recommend have enough climbing gears for steep rocky inclines and some high gears for excellent descending.

The wheels and tires make a huge difference to the way a bike rides and also gives it unique characteristics. Some mountain bikes have wheels as small as 26” and others as large as 29”. Depending on the size, it can completely change how the bike handles.

Stopping quickly and safely is very important in mountain biking. Brakes come in many different forms, from rim brakes to disc brakes. We want to know if the bike is going to have excellent stopping power and work well in poor conditions.

The Trek 4500 is an excellent bike and boasts an amazing ride. Unlike many mountain bike frames, it offers something for everyone. If you are new to the sport, it’s a great beginner’s bike that is going to be fun and stable to use, and if you are a seasoned expert, you are going to confidently throw it around.

The frame is made of aluminum, and it is a hardtail. It’s not as lightweight as carbon fiber, but it does offer great stiffness and ability from a cheaper material. Trek is known for making an excellent budget frame, and you can tell this with the 4500. It comes in two different styles, black with red detailing and white with black detailing.

The geometry is fairly straightforward, low-slung hardtail. It is going to offer comfort on those longer rides but still have a fair amount of ability when it comes to a technical trail. We were very impressed with the frame and felt a lot of time had gone into the design.

The frame comes in lots of different sizes, from 13” all the way up to 24”, which is an incredible range. It has a maximum weight limit of 275lbs, which is good too. These features are quite common on Trek and a brand quality we really like from them, making MTBs accessible for many different types of riders.

The Trek 4500 is a budget to mid-range bike, and it’s equipped with Suntour XCM suspension. Suntour does make excellent budget forks. They may not be the lightest or have the most travel, but they are super strong, very reliable, require little servicing, and have some great features.

The XCM forks are Suntour’s most popular cross-country forks, and they will give you travel up to 100mm. These forks come with a lockout for riding on flat surfaces, preload adjustment so you can dial that suspension in perfectly for yourself, and 30mm sanctions.

They are not the lightest forks but are very fun to ride with, easy to adjust and preload, and although it’s not everything, they do look great. They are perfect for XC riding, but if you are planning on extreme trails, you might want something with a little more travel.

In our opinion, one of the best things about the Trek 4500 is the gearing. You get an incredible range of gearing, from super low climbing gears for getting up big hills to lots of high gears for descending down mountains quickly.

The bike uses a Shimano Alivio groupset mixed with a few other Shimano components from a Deore rear derailleur and an Acera front derailleur. Shimano makes excellent gearing which is easy to maintain, provides smooth shifting, and excellent reliability.

It’s a 3×9 groupset with a 9-speed 11-34 cassette on the rear and a triple chainset on the front with a 44/32/22 combination of chainrings. This gives you a total of 27 different ratio options, which is amazing but can be a little more challenging to move around them with two shifters, unlike a 1x system.

Over the life of the Trek 4500, it has had a lot of different brakes. The older models started with rim brakes, then they were upgraded to mechanical disc brakes, and on this model, you have hydraulic disc brakes.

The hydraulic disc brakes Trek has gone with is the Shimano M395. They have excellent stopping power and are ideal in wet and sloppy conditions. They are going to work well and give you years of great service.

The Trek 4500 wheelset is very good. It comes from their sister company Bontrager and they are the Formula DC20 wheelset. They are wheels that are made to be strong, with 32 holes for spokes and double-walled rims.

Unlike many modern mountain bikes, the Trek 4500 uses 26” wheels. They are excellent for handling ability, have great acceleration, and typically can fit large tires as they are smaller than other sizes, such as 27.5” or 29”.

The tires also come from Bontrager and are the XR2 26”. They are 2.2” wide, and this is a great size not just for light dusty paths but hitting some loose terrain with serious speed behind you.

The Trek 4500 has so much to offer. It’s a bike that any rider can enjoy. It comes in at a great price, has a huge amount of gearing, and is built for comfortable rides and trail fun. We highly recommend it and know you will get an amazing mountain biking experience from this bike.

It isn’t the lightest of bikes, and although it has a lot of gearing options, a triple isn’t the most modern groupset you will find on the market. Aside from that, we struggle to fault this bike, and it’s a great investment.

Other Options

Co-op drt 1.1 bike.

The Co-op 1.1 Bike is an excellent value-for-money bike which is very popular in the US. It’s got a super comfortable geometry frame with a unique slope to it and a low-slung geometry for excellent handling.

With 27.5” wheels, 21 gears to choose from, 100 Suntour suspension, and hydraulic disc brakes, they haven’t skipped on the components either. The DRT is an excellent example of a budget MTB, and we can see why it is so popular with beginner and experienced riders.

The Co-op DRT 1.1 is very similar to the Trek 4500. The only difference being slightly bigger wheels and you do get less gearing options on the DRT. The Trek 4500 will be more agile off-road in our opinion.

GT has a big heritage when it comes to cycling and has been in the industry for many years making great bikes. The Aggressor Comp Bike is an excellent-looking bike, and it is made for fast XC riding.

The GT Aggressor Comp has large 29” wheels with mixed terrain tires. It has an 80mm suspension, a MicroShift groupset, and mechanical disc brakes. The components are basic, but the GT is light, fast, and a great base to upgrade on.

With the larger wheels the GT will be better at higher speeds. It will also be much better at rolling over obstacles like tree roots. The GT does have basic components compared to the 4500 and won’t be as good off-road in our opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Trek 4500 comes in many sizes, 13”, 16”, 18”, 19.5”, 21”, 22.5”, and 24”. Trek is excellent at offering many different sizes to suit many different users. Before buying, we recommend checking on the Trek website for your correct size.

Trek bikes come with a lifetime warranty. They say that the bikes are built to last. Obviously, this is providing the bike is used properly and components won’t fall under this.

Trek does outsource its manufacturing. They have factories in China, Taiwan, Germany, and Hungary. The Trek 4500 is a basic aluminum bike and will more than likely come from a factory in China. Trek is known for very high-quality control.

As with many of the bike companies, they are owned by a larger company. Trek is owned by Roth distribution. They oversee the operations of Trek and help with distribution.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Features

Frame and fork.

First things first, the frame is a crucial component of any bike. In the case of the Trek 4300, it’s made of aluminum, which is a popular choice due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight. 

In fact, the original 4300 model used Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame that’s tough enough to handle rugged trails with ease. As the model progressed, Trek introduced the Alpha Gold Aluminum material for the frame of the later versions of the 4300. 

This updated version has a more aggressive race geometry for speed, with internal cable routing for durability, and rack mounts for versatility.

You’ll also find that it has a replaceable derailleur hanger. Now, these upgrades made the bike more versatile and allowed it to handle a wider range of terrain.

Moving on to the fork, the Trek 4300 is a classic hardtail mountain bike with a front fork. This means that the front wheel is equipped with a suspension system that can absorb shocks and vibrations, making for a smoother ride on moderate terrain. 

The suspension fork has 70-100 mm travel, depending on the specific model, and it’s designed to handle mountain trails. However, it’s important to note that the suspension fork isn’t long enough to handle descents on rough trails. 

So while it can certainly absorb some bumps, it’s not enough for really difficult trails or downhill riding. But don’t worry, this bike can still take a lot of abuse. After all, it’s a mountain bike, and it’s designed to handle dirt trails.

In the first few generations of the Trek 4300, you could find a 3x8spd drivetrain with 24 gears.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more efficient, the later models of the Trek 4300 were fitted with the Shimano Acera M390 9-speed drivetrain. This gives you a wider range of gears for better control on hard trails.

Wheels and Tires

Most mountain bikes we see now have 29-inch wheels, but the Trek 4300 had 26-inch wheels and 26×2.20 tires, which actually are very agile and will quickly pick up speed. 

In later models, these tires were improved to be puncture resistant and could withstand increased tire pressure. 

We consider bigger wheels to be better for mountain riding, but small wheels aren’t that bad either because they are more agile, tend to accelerate faster and will easily move around tight corners. And these features are great for technical riding. 

But the bigger 27.5 and 29″ wheels actually provide more stability and comfort, which is why they are now preferred for mountain biking.

Despite the small wheels, the double-walled rims and 32-spoke design of the Trek 4300 are pretty solid and tough enough to withstand years of abuse on the trails.

At the end of the day, the wheels and tires on the Trek 4300 are a great combination for riders who want to tackle technical terrain and need a bike that can handle quick acceleration and tight cornering. 

While the market may be shifting towards larger wheels, the Trek 4300 is still a great option for those who value nimble handling and puncture resistance.

Saddle and Handlebars

The saddle is an important component of any bike, especially when it comes to mountain biking. 

While the standard saddle on the Trek 4300 may not be the most comfortable, the 31.6mm seatpost offers plenty of adjustment for a customized fit. 

You can even upgrade the saddle to one that suits your preferences for maximum comfort.

Size and weight

Actually, you may find sizes ranging from 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″. But since these bikes have been discontinued by Trek, finding them in the exact size you want may be a challenge.

One thing to keep in mind is that the bike weighs around 28.2lbs (12.8 kg), which might not make it the lightest bike on the market. I believe this is due to the front fork, which adds weight but also adds extra shock absorption for a more comfortable ride. 

However, this bike is sturdy enough to support riders up to 265 lbs of body weight.

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.  

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.
