2021 Season Summary

Lucinda Brand took the first success of the season, winning the World CX Championships in January. Ellen van Dijk then took the win at a wet, windy Healthy Ageing Tour. Helped by the conditions and a road bike only time trial. Next up was Elisa Longo Borghini who won Trofeo Alfredo Binda with an impressive solo break. Brand and Deignan won in Thuringen and Tour de Suisse. Another solo break from Longo Borghini saw her win GP de Plouay.

Table of Contents

Then Van Dijk began ticking off the time trial victories. She became European Champion and then World Champion against tough competition in Marlen Reusser. Chloe Hosking made a welcome return to the top step of the podium in Norway and Ardeche after struggling with COVID earlier on in the year. The year finished with the highest-profile victory. Lizzie Deignan’s huge solo win at the inaugural Paris Roubaix Femmes, battling the mud, will pass into legend.

  • Trixi Worrack (Retired)

Star Riders

Elisa Balsamo

Riders to Watch in 2022

There are the obvious stars of the team in Lizzie Deignan , Elisa Longo Borghini and Ellen van Dijk . The CX world champion Lucinda Brand will come off another long CX season but showed she can still ride all year and peak at the right time for wins. Signed from Movistar, Leah Thomas will provide some more climbing help, possibly an area the team was lacking compared to SD Worx. An American on the American team should see her get chances.

The sprinters are where Trek Segafredo really have a march on their rivals. New signing Elisa Balsamo brings the world champion’s rainbow bands to the team and will share the bulk of the opportunities with elite sprinter Chloe Hosking . Behind them there’s an intriguing battle too. Amalie Dideriksen hasn’t quite turned into the dominant sprinter it looked like she might be when she became world champion herself back in 2016. With no Olympics, she can give this season her all. Letizia Paternoster is in the same boat, the Olympics has been a distraction from her road duties in both 2020 and 2021. It’s easy to forget but in 2019, Paternoster was shaping up to be a huge sprint talent with the results to match.

Transfer Thoughts

The retirements of Ruth Winder and Trixi Worrack left some big holes to fill in the team. Winder was seeming at the peak of her powers, carving out a new role as a spring classics rider after winning Brabantse Pijl. The decision wasn’t an easy one but she’s still playing a role in the cycling world. Winder was elected to the UCI’s Athletes’ Commission for 4 years and is a mentor for young riders with The Cyclists’ Alliance . Trixi Worrack was one of the most experienced riders in the peloton and the team’s road captain. Audrey Cordon-Ragot has been groomed for that role and will step into it fully from 2022.

The signing of Leah Thomas gives Trek-Segafredo a bit more of an option during hilly races. Deignan and Longo Borghini certainly have their days but are often just a double act at the crunch point of races. Thomas will be able to help shift races in their favour against the might of SD Worx. Elisa Balsamo is obviously as a good get as the reigning world champion. Almost the same age as Lorena Wiebes, the pair have been great rivals to watch race against each other. The interesting part will how Balsamo adapts from using a traditional long lead-out train at Valcar to a bit more of an ad-hoc style at Trek Segafredo.

Check out Trek-Segafredo’s Trek Emonda for 2023

First Published Jan 31, 2023

The Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s teams will be dividing the vast majority of their time between the Trek Madone SLR aero road bike and this lightweight Trek Émonda SLR in 2023. Let’s take a closer look at the Émonda…

The current Émonda has been around for over two years now – doesn’t time fly? – with Trek calling this incarnation its fastest-climbing bike ever.

> Check out our story from when the current Trek Emonda was launched

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 27.jpeg

The Émonda has always been the lightweight road bike in Trek’s range, but the US brand also focused on aerodynamics in the development of the latest model.

> Trek releases radical Madone SLR, its “fastest road race bike ever”

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 13.jpeg

The designers say they spent most time working on the front end of the bike – the bar/stem, head tube and down tube – because that’s where you can make most aero gains, testing both with and without a water bottle in place.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 28.jpeg

Trek says that the flagship Émonda SLR platform is 60 seconds per hour faster than its predecessor on flat roads – in other words, on the older bike it would take you 61 minutes to ride as far as you could in 60 minutes on the newer one – and 18 seconds per hour faster on an 8% gradient (Trek’s notional rider upon which these figures are based is 70kg and puts out 350 watts for the hour).

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 23.jpeg

Trek says that the Émonda SLR isn’t as aerodynamically efficient as its Madone platform but that it's marginally ahead of the Domane endurance bike.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 8.jpeg

Using deep-section tubes adds weight over round tubes so the current Émonda SLR that Trek-Segafredo riders use is slightly heavier than the previous model, but the frame still comes in under 700g. The designers say that the slight weight penalty is still worth it for the net gain in speed in most circumstances thanks to improved aero efficiency.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 18.jpeg

In order to hit its weight, strength and stiffness targets for this bike, Trek says it had to use a new kind of carbon fibre within the layup – which it calls 800 Series OCLV carbon.

Trek isn’t keen on giving away too many secrets but says that from a fibre-type perspective, OCLV 800 is 30% stronger than the material it uses for its OCLV 700.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 7.jpeg

Trek-Segafredo riders use handlebars, stems, seat posts and saddles from Trek’s in-house Bontrager brand.

The bar and stem are separate units here and the hoses for the hydraulic disc brakes run externally before entering the frame at the top of the head tube.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 16.jpeg

There are no gear cables or wires to worry about because Trek-Segafredo riders use SRAM Red eTap AXS groupsets with wireless shifting. They also use Quarq SRAM Red AXS Power Meters.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 10.jpeg

Team riders can choose between 48/35, 50/37, 52/39 and 54/41-tooth chainsets and 10-28 or 10-33 12-speed cassettes.

The wheels are from Bontrager: RSL37, RSL51 or RSL62, depending on the terrain, conditions, and rider preference. The number in the name refers to the rim depth in millimetres. All of these wheels use DT Swiss 240s internals with Ratchet EXP 36-point engagement.

2023 Trek-Segafredo Trek Emonda - 14.jpeg

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The team uses tubeless, clinchers, and tubulars.

The team use Time XPro-10 pedals, Time being a brand that’s now owned by SRAM, and Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Roam bike computers.

Interesting to see the pro team bikes are sans integrated bars. I know people who have started to get replacement bars from trek after the recall. I decided to keep mine instead of getting the temp replacement but to see the team with a different set up raises eyebrows.

It's possible that the reason is that many pros will use 150-170mm stems with narrow bars, it's not worth tooling up to manufacture the whole assembly for that size, which hardly anyone will buy, whereas it's possibly cheaper/easier to do smaller runs of longer stem & narrow bars separately.

Trek-Segafredo Raises the Women’s Base Salaries to Equal the Men’s

Now, will the UCI establish this as a rule for all WorldTour teams?

team trek–segafredo women elite 2021 training

With Bicycling All Access, We’ll Help You Become an Even Better Rider

“Salary really depends on the individual, but we can confirm that all of our professional road cycling athletes—regardless of gender—make at or above the minimum for the men’s program,” Eric Bjorling, director of brand marketing at Trek Bikes, told Bicycling . “As with all neo-pro [first year] riders, there is a slightly lower minimum, which is the case for several of the riders on both programs.”

Salary minimums for women pro cyclists, established by the UCI, first went into effect in 2020. According to the mandate , this year women on WorldTour teams must earn at least €20,000 and receive an annual pay raise until topping out at around €30,000 in 2023. (The same mandate also established mandatory maternity leave and health insurance.)

By comparison, this year, WorldTour men cyclists will have a UCI-mandated minimum salary of €40,045 .

“There’s been some talk that pro cycling might require raising the women’s world tour minimum to the same as the men’s and this is something we strongly support. That said, we didn’t want to wait for a mandate, so we made the decision to do this on our own in the fall of 2020,” Bjorling said.

Trek-Segafredo’s 2021 season roster includes top-tier cyclists like Lizzie Deignan , Ruth Winder , Elisa Longo Borghini, and Taylor Wiles .

“Anybody who has watched women’s cycling knows what an incredible sport it is and we’re proud to have the opportunity to be involved and support these amazing athletes,” Bjorling said.

Trek-Segafredo have been around since 2011 as a men's WorldTour team, first as Leopard-Trek and before the American bicycle manufacturer became the title sponsor in 2014 and 2015. The Italian coffee company Segafredo joined as a co-title sponsor in 2016 and the organisation added a high-powered women's team in 2019.

Their key signing was Olympic silver medalist Lizzie Deignan, making her return from maternity leave, time trial world champion Ellen van Dijk, Italian Elisa Longo Borghini and top-ranked American Ruth Winder.

They also hired Ina Teutenberg to direct the team in their first season. She led Trek-Segafredo to sixth place in the UCI Rankings in 2019 and before long they were the best team in the world.

In 2020, Trek-Segafredo were part of the first cohort of Women's WorldTeams when the UCI created the designation, and, after having also added former world champion Giorgia Bronzini as a DS, they established themselves atop the standings in the COVID-19 abbreviated season.

Winder kicked off the strong season with a win at the Tour Down Under, and Deignan stamped her authority on the WorldTour, winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège, La Course by Le Tour, the GP de Plouay and topping the overall ranking. The team also won the opening team time trial at the Giro Rosa, a stage and third place overall with Elisa Longo Borghini, and ended the season atop both the WorldTour and UCI World Rankings.

They were the closest challengers to the dominant SD Worx outfit in 2021, ending the season with 20 wins - including Deignan's spectacular solo at Paris-Roubaix - and second to the Dutch team in both the WorldTour and World Rankings.

Starting their third season, Trek-Segafredo have lost Winder and Trixi Worrack to retirement but have brought on the UCI Road World Champion Elisa Balsamo who, at 23, is only just starting to make her mark as a sprinter and keen one-day racer, and Leah Thomas - a more than capable replacement for Worrack's experience and road smarts. Bronzini has moved on to direct Liv Racing.

Trek-Segafredo started the season on a high note, with Van Dijk winning the Healthy Ageing Tour and the stage 2 time trial, but they missed Deignan in the first Classics. She had to skip Strade Bianche because of a cold and after being sick again she did not defend her Liège-Bastogne-Liège title.

Thankfully, Paris-Roubaix was rescheduled from its April slot until later in the season, when a healthy Deignan would go on to completely dominate an extraordinarily muddy debut for the women at the Hell of the North.

While Deignan struggled in the spring, the rest of the team came through with Longo Borghini taking second at Strade Bianche, winning the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and podiums at Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Winder also took a fine victory at Brabantse Pijl.

They got back on track in May, with Cyclo-cross World Champion Lucinda Brand shifting into high road gear at the Thüringen Ladies Tour, winning two stages and the overall. Deignan refound her form at the Tour de Suisse, and, although she admittedly botched the first stage sprint of the two-day race, she gained enough time bonuses on the next day to win the overall.

The team missed the winning move at La Course but made up for it by winning the Giro Donne opening team time trial. While SD Worx utterly crushed the rest of the Giro, Trek-Segafredo won the mountains classification with Brand and Deignan was fourth behind the SD Worx podium sweep.

Chloe Hosking came down with COVID-19 in March and she returned to victory at the Ladies Tour of Norway in August.

Longo Borghini came back from her bronze-medal performance at the Tokyo Olympics to win the GP de Plouay, Winder, Brand, and Hosking won stages at the Tour de l'Ardèche and Van Dijk won both the European road championship and her second title at Worlds in the time trial.

The team's crowning moment came in the postponed inaugural edition of the Women's Paris-Roubaix when Deignan attacked ahead of the first cobbled sector and rode solo to victory in some of the most treacherous conditions imaginable, with several sectors covered in a thick layer of slippery mud. Deignan held off a fervent chase by Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), while Longo Borghini escaped to fill the final podium spot. It was one of the most inspired rides of the season.

Lizzie Deignan : After her performance in Paris-Roubaix last season, the Briton will have a big target on her back when it comes to the second edition in April. However, she may not even be the team's leader for that race.

Deignan is always a threat when it comes to one-day races, and she will undoubtedly want to get her title back in Liège. She's also a past winner of Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders, so as long as Deignan comes into the Spring Classics healthy, she'll be a contender.

Later in the year, expect the 33-year-old to set her sights on the Women's Tour and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

Ellen van Dijk : The time trial world champion is the team's main motor and a key strategic player when it comes to supporting teammates. At 34, she is one of the most experienced riders in the team, and she is also a proven winner in the cobbled Classics, having won Dwars door Vlaanderen twice and the Tour of Flanders.

Paris-Roubaix did not go her way in 2021 and she ended the season with a concussion because of a crash there. She will be out for revenge at the 2022 edition.

Elisa Longo Borghini : The double Italian champion showed in 2021 that she is at a high point in her career and riding in her national colours will be huge motivation for her home opening Classics at Strade Bianche and the Trofeo Alfredo Binda.

In addition to supporting the team and playing foil to Van Dijk and Deignan in the Belgian classics, Longo Borghini is a good climber who will likely lead the team at the Giro d'Italia before perhaps supporting Deignan at the Tour de France.

Elisa Balsamo : The 23-year-old surprised the world when she beat Vos to claim the rainbow bands in Flanders but it was no fluke. Balsamo was the U23 European champion in 2020, and a junior world champion in 2016.

She took her first pro victory in 2018 after her 20th birthday at the Omloop van Borsele and has won stages of the Tour of California, Ceratizit Challenge, Baloise Ladies Tour and, as world champion, at the Women's Tour.

Without a mid-season focus on racing the track with the Italian national team, Balsamo will undoubtedly add to her win tally thanks to powerful lead-out support from Van Dijk and Longo Borghini in De Panne and Gent-Wevelgem. She's only beginning to show her true capabilities on the road.

Trek-Segafredo have a rider for every scenario and, now that Anna van der Breggen has climbed off the bike and into the SD Worx team car, a slightly better chance at grabbing more victories in 2022.

They've got Deignan and Longo Borghini for the hillier one-day races and stage races, Van Dijk, Balsamo and Chloe Hosking for the flatter ones, and a host of chancers for stages and long-range attacks.

The addition of Leah Thomas will help offset the loss of Winder and Worrack, while Balsamo will be the key to toppling dominant sprinters like Vos, Demi Vollering (SD Worx) and Lorena Wiebes (DSM). They will gain motivation by supporting the world champions and the European road champion, but their all-for-one, one-for-all attitude - and a super domestique in Audrey Cordon-Ragot is their biggest asset.

Trek-Segafredo have also helped foster some promising young riders: Shirin van Anrooij has shown herself in cyclo-cross to be on par with the best elite riders at 19 and was the best young rider in the Tour de Feminin this season. Elynor Backstedt was a promising junior who won the 2019 Gent-Wevelgem and Omloop Borsele junior women's races but a spiral fracture to the tibia in 2020 had the Briton in a cast and a season-long recovery. The team kept the pressure off her in 2021 but she took a close second to Van Dijk in the 4.4km Lotto Belgium Tour prologue, demonstrating her talent.

Former U23 champion Letizia Paternoster and former world champion Amalie Dideriksen should also benefit from their track programme being shifted to the end of the year.

The team has great equipment, great support from the wider team organisation, great leadership in the team car and huge talent on the road, with proven champions like Deignan, Longo Borghini, Van Dijk and now Balsamo.

When it comes to longer climbs, however, their leaders have not yet been able to match the likes of Annemiek van Vleuten and Van der Breggen. With La Planche des Belles Filles closing out the Tour de France Femmes, they'll be under pressure to ditch Van Vleuten in the first stages, something that is notoriously difficult to do.

Balsamo is an amazing rider but she hasn't yet shown the consistency of riders like Vollering and Wiebes, so that could be a potential weakness.

Trek-Segafredo have assembled a very good team for 2022 and as long as everyone stays healthy they've got the potential to challenge for the top of the rankings.

Although Van Vleuten has shown herself to be the world's best climber, between Deignan, Longo Borghini, Balsamo and Van Dijk they have the firepower for any of the Classics and a strong tactical position for stage races.

There has been a shift in the Women's WorldTour, with SD Worx nabbing Olympic medalist Marlen Reusser and Lotte Kopecky, Jumbo-Visma picking up Coryn Labecki, and BikeExchange-Jayco hiring a slew of reinforcements but Trek-Segafredo have kept their best riders and added more. There's little stopping them from being the WorldTour's top team in 2022.

Inside Trek-Segafredo’s ‘mild to wild’ kit design process

trek segafredo riders

Get the low-down on our kit that's business in the front and party in the back

December is a magical time of year. A time to reflect, a time to celebrate, a time for change. In cycling team terms, there’s no greater symbol of a cycling team’s growth and ambition than a fresh new kit. And well, we’re really proud of ours .

Trek-Segafredo is rolling out a look that’s a mix of old and bold. “Business in front, party in back,” if you will. The front is a modest evolution of our classic look with colored sleeves: Red for our men’s team, blue for our women’s team. The back features a festive checker pattern that will help it stand out among teammates trying to find each other within the peloton and fans watching the action from a helicopter’s camera lens.

Where did that eye-popping pattern come from? Who decides whether and how much the kit should change every year? And how does a plethora of designers, sponsors, executives and more finally decide on a kit to represent their WorldTour squad? Excellent questions! For the answers, we talked to Trek Art Director, Brian Lindstrom, to get a better sense of Trek-Segafredo’s annual kit design process.

Come, let’s go on a journey that started in April 2021, while this past season was still young.

From mild to wild

Trek staff share their impressions of the new kit with the design team throughout the racing season, but the first formal round of 2023 designs were made in April. In the past, the design team typically sketched their first designs in June or July. However, the UCI, which must approve every kit worn by World Tour teams, created an early approval window in June, incentivizing the Trek team to get a head start.

During those initial brainstorms, the design team considers every idea for the kit, “from mild to wild,” according to Lindstrom. Lindstrom has overseen race team kit designs for 10 years, and has a good grasp of the elements that make a Trek-Segafredo kit so recognizable. “I’m very comfortable and I can turn out the mild to medium, with confidence,” he says. In-house designers who normally focus on other products and design projects often contribute the most unconventional ideas, elements of which may work their way into the final design.

“It’s fun bringing the entire in-house graphic design crew along for the team kit process, with an all-new perspective, and just say, ‘Blow it up, do whatever you want to do, have some fun.'” Lindstrom says.

Lindstrom will put together a digital presentation of the best 30-40 designs for review. The sketches include ideas for gloves, shoes, caps, helmets and bibs as well as jerseys. The decision has many stakeholders, including company leaders involved in marketing, product development, sports management, and more. But the opinion that matters most belongs to the person at the top. Trek CEO John Burke scours all of the designs and rates each one out of five. He’ll also provide his formal feedback, picking out elements he likes or dislikes in each sketch. From there, Lindstrom and his team get back to work by refining their efforts.

Narrowing the field

From 30-plus designs, the design team narrows their options down to 10,which they then send to Santini in Italy to create physical samples in both men’s and women’s colorways, creating 20 sample total. Santini quickly creates a full range of bespoke cycling gear and sends the items back to Trek headquarters in Waterloo. This past June, a showroom was set up where the same key stakeholders pored over options for the 2023 kit in person, and the evaluation process began again.

Burke ultimately makes the final call on the kit, but rigorous discussion takes place among a number of people to help whittle down the options to a top choice. Lindstrom flies to Waterloo to see his creations in person, as well as weigh in himself on what he likes, doesn’t like, and why.

A winner for the 2023 kit emerged in July, and it featured a radical design choice for a jersey that has pushed itself forward gradually over time. The alternating squares of parallel lines and checkerboards on the back of the kit were chiefly inspired by the checkered flag that waves at the finish lines of moto races, but the design also subtly nodded at Trek’s commitment to support both men’s and women’s racing across all disciplines.

“We filled in the pattern with two bars, and that just so happened to create an equal sign,” Lindstrom says. “We thought that was relevant to our men’s and women’s teams, and the mission that we’ve been pursuing over the last few years. We explored many different potential patterns, but this one felt most natural for Trek-Segafredo.”

From a practical standpoint, the back pattern is also highly visible. Lindstrom made sure of that by creating a document with vector drawings that simulated how the kit would stand out in the peloton from the bird’s eye view of most cycling broadcasts.

“You’re gonna have that nice clean podium view for the finish line view on the front, but then we’re hoping that the back will help from the point of view of the helicopters and teammates trying to find each other,” Lindstrom says. “It also enables us to bring a little bit of ‘wild’ to the kit that we haven’t had in the past.”

Burke approves the final design, but, according to Lindstrom, “John usually ends reviews by saying, ‘You guys know how to take it from here and wrap this up.'” This year, one kit emerged as a clear winner, but in year’s past, Burke might like three or four kits. In those instances, he trusts Trek’s designers to meld some of the best elements of all the kits and make any last decisions. Often, alternate kits for special races emerge from simply having too many leftover good ideas.

More adjustments and alterations are needed after a winning kit is selected to make sure sponsor logos are legible, that elements scale well on riders’ bodies, that the kit pairs well with the bike paint schemes that Trek-Segafredo has planned for the year, and more. Lindstrom made his last edits to the master design file near the end of August. The final tweaks are small, often nearly imperceptible, and based on input from dozens of people who have vested interests in what Trek-Segafredo’s riders wear on race days.

After an exhaustive process, Lindstrom crosses his fingers that the kit wins UCI approval. When it does, his work is done, and riders and fans can start looking forward to the ever magical New Kit Day.

Delivering the goods

Trek-Segafredo is unique compared to many WorldTour in that Trek wholly owns the team, which allows for cohesiveness across all elements of the race day look. For example, not only does Trek’s helmet and shoes team already have a strong understanding of the company’s stylistic language, they also work closely with Lindstrom on a number of different projects beyond racing. Communication and collaboration occur at Trek much more easily than it might on other teams, where helmet and kit design might be done by two distinct companies.

“We don’t design the kits in a vacuum, we design it for the whole team,” Lindstrom says. “It really does involve a lot of different people at Trek: Micah [Moran] on the bikes, Jamie [Banks-George] on the helmet, Jon [Takao] on the shoes, and many others. There’s a lot of thought that goes into the whole package. We’re not only focused on having the best ranked jersey in the peloton, although that’s nice too. But it’s not as important to us as having the whole team looking good, head to toe, all the way down to the vehicles.”

Kit design is a personal process at Trek. And at the end of the day, Lindstrom most hopes to impress the people wearing the gear. Riders may not have weighed in much during the in-season winnowing process, but their happiness is paramount, and the jersey must address certain functional parameters for them, like visibility. Certainly, no rider has ever raced slower because they looked too good.

Trek-Segafredo has worked with Santini since 2017, and they recently extended their partnership through 2025. That close relationship ensures that New Kit Day is always special. Every year, each Trek-Segafredo rider receives more than 200 pieces of fresh gear, and for the third year in a row, Santini saved roughly 150 kilograms of plastic packaging from landing in the garbage by folding the riders’ clothing directly into boxes and handing them out at team camp in October. The practice is not only better for the environment, but it eliminates the annoying process of riders fumbling and tearing through polyethylene bags to check out their new swag.

Every step in the process of creating a new kit — from those first wild ideas, to how physical kits land on riders’ backs — is carefully considered, honed by years of practice and continuity. The point of six months of hard work and hustle is simple: “The goal is to have two really good looking kits,” Lindstrom says. Evolving one of the most consistently clean looks in cycling requires mountains of hard work, but when a brand means so much to so many, the effort is worthwhile.
