The ONLY boat to visit Grace Darling's home in the Longstone Lighthouse in Northumberland's Farne Islands

As the Trinity House lighthouse keeper, George is the only skipper who can take you on a guided tour inside Grace Darling’s Lighthouse and indeed the only skipper licensed to land on the island of Longstone itself. Landing on Longstone is free. We also organise trips to the National Trust Farne islands bird sanctuaries and you can bok the boat for private charter for friends, groups or businesses The lighthouse has toilets and a visitor centre and you can visit Grace’s bedroom and look out of the window where she saw the wreck of the Forfarshire. The top of the lighthouse has a viewing platform which gives you incredible views of the islands and Northumberland coastline. Dogs are welcome to land on the island but must be kept on a lead at all times. Sadly they are not allowed inside the lighthouse.

Tom Hall

My journey to the lighthouse with Patricia

It wasn't a typical introduction to life on a cruise ship. I stood on the helipad of the Patricia during a force six blast, watching in awe as the crew hauled huge ropes and the ship's launch pitched wildy in the waves. After nearly 30 minutes of wrestling, their task was complete.

The 2,500-tonne Patricia is the flagship of Trinity House, which is responsible for the maintenance of lighthouses, buoys and light vessels that guard the shipping lanes and coastline of England and Wales. I had just witnessed the crew positioning the South Goodwin, a small boat that is home to a light tower.

Technological strides have meant that Patricia's role has changed since she first came into service in 1982. One of her original tasks had been to transport lighthouse keepers to remote stations such as Wolf Rock and Bishop's Rock. But the automation of lighthouses and the construction of helipads on some of the lighthouses means there are no keepers to ferry, leaving room for a few fare-paying passengers keen to experience life on a working ship. I was one of the first onboard.

The ship's main task during my three-day trip from its base in Harwich was to reinstall the South Goodwin vessel near Ramsgate, Kent, which had been away for repair (Trinity House had put in a replacement).

If passengers are lucky they might be able to visit a rock station or attend a shipwreck where the Patricia may have to mark out no-go areas with buoys or install a light vessel. If the car-carrying Tricolor, which sank in the Channel in 2002 with £30m worth of luxury cars onboard, had been in British waters John Mallett, the captain of the Patricia, and his crew would have been responsible for preventing any further wrecks.

I had great fun hanging out on the bridge with the crew, who pointed out the basics of radar, global positioning systems and steering. Polite enquiries resulted in a tour of the engine room where one of the six diesel electric engines was being stripped down and cleaned.

My fellow passenger, Mick, was a veteran of freighter trips across the Atlantic and the Caribbean. From a maritime family, he felt happiest when he was at sea and loved being on a working ship. 'You can really get to know the crew, there are far fewer passengers and, though it's not cheap, you get a unique experience,' he said.

After a few hours in his company I began to share his enthusiasm and was spotting bulk carriers, dredgers and ro-ros as they sailed by. At one point we sighted a gargantuan cruise ship sailing along the hori zon on her way into the Channel. About the same time, one of the Patricia's crew was conducting a delicate electrical operation on a light vessel that was pitching in rough seas. I felt a slight smugness that I was not in a floating hotel.

The Patricia may be a working ship, but it is surprisingly luxurious. In fact, it is so comfortable the Duke of Edinburgh, patron of Trinity House, and his entourage use it during Cowes week. Behind the special towing winches and a 20-tonne speed crane are six good-sized guest cabins with ensuite bathrooms and satellite TV. The food is top notch, good enough to grace any captain's - or prince's - table and a dedicated team is onboard to look after guests. There's also a well-stocked bar in the dining-room. My evenings were spent watching the sun go down and looking up at starry skies.

Though joining the Patricia may appeal to those who are fond of spending time on cargo ships, this isn't a typical freighter cruise. We didn't eat with the crew as is customary on cargo voyages and there was a sense of separation from the goings-on of the ship, though these barriers are likely to break down as more visitors come onboard and the crew realise that people are fascinated by what they do.

On our last morning we were back in the Stour estuary dropping off the replacement South Goodwin light vessel and getting ready to go back ashore. I hid on the bridge for as long as I could before I was summoned to the launch that took several crewmembers, Mick and myself on a fun, speedy ride to the pier at Harwich.

It had been an utterly gripping trip. I was astonished at how much there was to look at, and how alive and busy a working ship felt. As my train rattled back towards London I caught a glimpse of the Patricia sailing back out to sea and felt green that I was no longer on board.

A seven-day trip onboard the Patricia with Trinity House (01255 245034; Trinity House ) starts at £1,400 single and £2,450 double including all meals, available from March to October. Longer voyages are possible. Information on visiting lighthouses in England and Wales and lighthouse museums is available on lighthouse-visits .

· For more on cargo ship travel the bi-monthly Freighter Travel Review (c/o Michael Murphy, 14 Egremont Way, Colchester, CO3 5NJ; 01206 503798) is an excellent starting point. The Cruise People (020 7723 2450 ; cruisepeople ) and Strand Travel (0207766 8220; Strand Travel ) can help with freighter travel bookings.

If you liked the sound of that ... try these

You can stay in one of 10 lighthouse keeper's cottages in England and Wales offered by Rural Retreats (01386 701177; Rural Retreats ), including Anvil Point, Dorset, and St Catherine's on the Isle of Wight. Two new locations open this year in Whitby in North Yorkshire (October) and St Anthony's Head on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall (July), where a week's stay ranges from £599 in low season to £855 in peak season.

The romantic West Usk Lighthouse (01633 810126; West Usk Lighthouse) is unusually short and fat rather than tower-like. It has great views of the Bristol Channel from its location near Newport, Gwent . Built in 1821 it now operates as a guest house with doubles from £90 a night, B&B. A range of strange treatments, including biorhythm readings, past life regression and flotation tank relaxation is available.

Watch over the straits that separate San Francisco and San Pablo Bays in California with a stay in the East Brother Light Station (00 1 510 233 2385; ebls ). Set on an island, the inn has four bedrooms with bay views. Rooms cost from £158 per night based on two sharing, including boat trip to the island from the mainland, breakfast and four-course dinner. Flights from Gatwick to San Francisco are from £314 with Delta Airlines (0800 414767; Delta )

Smalls Lighthouse

The Smalls Lighthouse Pembrokeshire Wales

THE SMALLS LIGHTHOUSE

It is the most remote lighthouse operated by trinity house..

The Smalls Lighthouse stands on a small rock approximately 20 miles (32 kilometres) west of St David's Peninsula.

In 1859 Trinity House, having bought out the previous leaseholders in 1836,  began the construction of the current Lighthouse.  The tower was completed in 1861.  In 1978 a helideck was erected above the lantern and in 1987 the lighthouse was automated.

The first wind-and solar-powered lighthouse in the UK. Although it has only a 35 watt bulb, with the aid of lenses, this can be seen up to 21 miles (34 km) away. It was the first lighthouse in the country to have an installed flushing toilet.

The original Smalls Lighthouse was erected over 1775 and 1776.

It was constructed using the plans of Liverpool musical instrument maker Henry Whiteside.  It stood on nine oak pillars, allowing the sea to pass through beneath. Although it suffered from some rocking, it stood for 80 years.

During its life a significant number of extra struts were added beyond the original nine. The pillar-based design has since been used successfully in many sea structures.

Longstone Lighthouse

Over the last 3 weeks the Longstone Lighthouse has been having a new paint job and she looks mighty fine. The weather has been good to the lads with only a few days of rain. They have also been doing some maintenance on the compressor.

The lads putting the final touches to the Lighthouse and then they will go straight to another Lighthouse.

The Galasea is a Trinity House vessel and she is some size. She is 84m long with a service speed of 13 knots. She has been changing the Bouys around the area and also filling the Longstone Lighthouse with fuel. The Lighthouse is automatic but when they do maintenance on the they have a big generator as back up.

Longships Lighthouse

The most westerly point of britain and has been warning seaman since 1795., about longships lighthouse, longships lighthouse marks the most westerly point of britain and has been warning seaman since 1795..

This is the second of two towers that have stood on Carn Bras, the highest islet or the exposed reef. The impressive structure you see today replaced Lieutenant Smith’s tower in 1873. A testament to Sir James Douglass and Trinity House engineers, as this granite tower, still stands tall alongside Wolf rock and the Lizard. These free lights are responsible for the best-illuminated waterways in Britain and saving countless lives of seaman around Cornwall.

Longships, was the first offshore lighthouse to contain lamps and reflectors. Eighteen lamps with reflectors, arranged in two tiers were used to create a strong beam of light that can be seen 15 NM offshore.

Sea Of Whales Adventures

Whale Watching Adventures

Sea Of Whales Adventures is a family-owned-and-operated company located in Trinity, Newfoundland, Canada. With over 25 years of experience in guiding whale watching excursions, we have a firm understanding of what takes our guests’ breath away and do our best to make it happen on each and every trip. With a maximum of 12 passengers on board, you will enjoy a personal and awe inspiring experience that will live in your memory forever

WELCOME TO SEA OF WHALES ADVENTURES!

Whale watching is one of the most exciting activities you may ever experience but beware – you may get ‘hooked’ for life! You will be amazed by these “gentle giants” as we watch them feed, play, and migrate through our study area around the Bonavista peninsula (the historical Heritage sites of Trinity and Bonavista are in the area).

Our staff is dedicated to showing you the best whales that our area has to offer including fin, humpback, sperm, minke, and pilot whales and, although rare, orcas too. You may expect to see various species of dolphins and porpoises, eagles, and offshore sea birds including puffins and northern gannets. It is our hope that you will walk off the boat feeling educated and enlightened by the experience and that you will want to travel with us again.

Taking a trip with Sea of Whales Adventures is more than just watching whales, it is also contributing to a scientific study.   Our trips give us the opportunity to photograph several species of whales and these photographs allow us to try to identify individual whales and give us an idea of how many whales and which individuals pass through our study area every year – you may be surprised at the long sighting history of some of these animals.

We are also able to network with other organizations and individuals who work doing similar studies to determine the history and movements of these whales.  For more information on our studies, to contribute photographs that you have taken or to view some of “our” whales, please go to our Flickr site .

Natural Wonders

Sea of Whales Adventures is based out of the picturesque village of Trinity, Trinity Bay. This tiny, but vibrant, community is full of history, beauty, and character and has been inviting visitors to its shores for more than 400 years. Trinity is situated on the Bonavista Peninsula, an area like none other! There are few places in Newfoundland that offer our visitors the number and variety of different experiences that our peninsula does.

Every summer, the bays, inlets, and coves of our area are full of living things to encounter. Because of the geology of the area, a small fish called capelin are able to come here to lay their eggs on the beaches. These fish drive the entire ecosystem and are why the whales visit our waters in such great numbers. These fish are also why our area is the host to many nesting colonies for birds such as puffins, gannets, guillemots, murres, terns, as well as has an abundance of the majestic bald eagle.

But it’s not just whale watching that brings people to our area! In July of 2020, the Bonavista Peninsula received designation as a UNESCO World Geopark. On a Sea of Whales Adventure, you will have the view of some of the most interesting and unique geological features of our area from the comfort of our boat. For more information about the geology of this area visit https://discoverygeopark.com/

What People Are Saying

Trip Advisor Traveller's Choice 2023

“ We enjoyed a great day out with Sea if Whales, we were given full flotation gear to put on for the chill and water so we were quite comfortable. There were drinks and (homemade) snacks on board as well. We flew through the water looking for whales and were not disappointed. Highly recommend this tour.”

“Sorry for the late post. The chances of seeing whales in September is quite slim but I have to say our host was trying his best to find one for us. Overall, I enjoyed every minute! I liked that it was smaller group, making it more personable. Added bonus was the snacks and beverage.”

“Kris was super enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He made the trip so much fun and the views from the boat were absolutely stunning. This was an experience that will be unforgettable. Even though we didn’t see any whales, Kris ended up spotting a family of dolphins in which we stopped for a bit to observe. During this time Kris provided tea and coffee and a side of his homemade cookies (such a special touch and boy were they good.) Couldn’t have been any better. He also pointed out puffins and bald eagles as we were driving along the coast. We honestly cannot say thank you enough, and we all highly recommend taking a tour with Kris. So. Much. Fun. Huge thank you to Kris and Shawna.”

Best things to do in Rhode Island this week: April 19-26

Wicked Tulips Flower Farm's Exeter location is open, and its Johnston location is expected to open the week of April 22.

What do trapeze artists, John Waters, pizza, tulips, beer, Ben Folds, and flower parades all have in common? They’re all in Rhody this week, my friends. Here’s the coolest fun in the 401.

Let’s ride.

SEASON OPENER

In case you’re reading this April 18, I’ll note that tonight is the seconnd Annual WaterFire Day in PVD. Yup, WaterFire season starts now. The first lighting of the season will be a partial one, with a lighting ceremony around 7:30 p.m. with pyres burning until 9:30 p.m. Expect a “small WaterFire Marketplace” in Memorial Park. WaterFire also hosts a community partner fundraiser, encouraging Rhode Islanders to explore Providence’s renowned restaurants, bars, and shops. Visitors have the opportunity to generate extra support for WaterFire by visiting any of the participating WaterFire Day businesses, which donate 10 percent of sales on April 18 to WaterFire Providence, according to WaterFire. Details here .

GALLERY NIGHT

Coinciding for a perfect creative storm? April 18 is also Gallery Night. Like WaterFire, Gallery Night is part of what makes Providence the Creative Capital. Hop on a trolley to see galleries, museums and other creative hot-spots with one of five free guided tours, or visit the “ Make Your Own Tour ” page and go it on your own. Details here.

There’s still time to grab a slice — or four. Providence Pizza Week runs through April 20. Creative pies galore. Examples: Trinity Brewhouse offers “The Dirty Bird” — fried chicken, jalapeños and hot honey. Antonio’s Pizza by the Slice on Thayer and Wickenden serves up the truffle-loaded tater tot — truffle parmesan aioli, scallions bacon, truffle oil, and cheddar cheese. While Trattoria Appia soothes a sweet tooth: “Nutella Pizza” — brick-fired oven pizza with Nutella, strawberry and whipped cream. Vote for your fave. Details here .

TIME TO TIPTOE …

... Through wicked tulips. One of Rhody’s treasures is Wicked Tulips Flower Farms, with locations in Exeter and Johnston. (If you’re up for a road trip, their largest farm is in Preston, Conn.) Instagram was born for places like this. According to their website, the Exeter farm is open and expects to be open through April 22. The Johnston farm is expected to open the week of April 22.

Mother Nature determines the exact dates. Check online before you plan a trip. Details on pricing, FAQs, do’s and don’ts, photography rules and more are on their website. They suggest you read “Visitor 101″ . Online tickets only. Prices depends on the day. Adults from $20. Ages 5-17 $5; ages 4 and under are free. Exeter location: 400 Hog House Hill Road. Johnston location: 90 Brown Ave. Details here .

I SPEAK FOR THE TREES

If I can get my Lorax on here and throw in my two cents: This might sound trite, but every day actually is Earth Day. Pollution and global warming is no joke. On the calendar, we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, and there are a number of cleanups you can register to get involved with, but please remember you don’t need to sign up, register, or drive anywhere to think about this planet. Grab a trash bag and walk your neighborhood or local beach. Here are a few other ways to help this week:

  • Roger Williams Park at 1000 Elmwood Ave., in Providence, hosts a clean-up April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Register and details here .
  • Providence’s Downtown Neighborhood Association hosts a cleanup April 19, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Check in at The Landing, 101 Dyer St. Details here.
  • East Greenwich hosts a cleanup April 20 at 10 a.m. Meet at Academy Field or Frenchtown School, followed by refreshments at Academy Field at noon. Details here .
  • Blackstone Parks Conservatory hosts a Riverbank Cleanup in collaboration with the Geo Club of Brown University April 20 at 10 a.m. Meet at Blackstone Field, across from the Narragansett Boat Club, 2 River Drive, Providence. Details here .

KID EARTH PARTIES

Instill an early appreciation for nature and taking care of this planet. Two ideas this week:

Ninigret Park hosts an Earth Day Celebration April 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free activities for the whole family, with vendors and organizations offering earth friendly information and education, according to billing. 7 Park Lane, Charlestown. Details here .

It’s a “Party for the Planet” at Roger Williams Park Zoo April 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kids can “enjoy a family fun-filled day that emphasizes the importance of protecting our planet,” according to billing. Expect “up-close animal encounters, keeper talks,” and interactive bird shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Plus hands-on education stations, live music, “costumed character meet & greets,” and more. With regular zoo admission. 1000 Elmwood Ave., Providence. Details here .

TIVERTON GARDEN EXPO

Meanwhile, the Tiverton Public Library hosts a free-admission “Earth Day Garden Expo” April 20 from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. Score free seed packets, bring a soil sample from your garden for free advice from University of Rhode Island master gardeners, shop gardening books, plus raffle and activities for all ages. 34 Roosevelt Ave. Details here .

JOHN WATERS’ BIRTHDAY PARTY

Let’s get weird. The Personality, capital P, that is John Waters celebrates his birthday in PVD April 20 with “Devil’s Advocate: 78th Birthday Show.” You know might know the pencil-thin mustachioed Waters as writer/director/ of “Cecil B. Demented” or “Hairspray” among other films. The “patron saint ” of the Provincetown International Film Festival, as the Globe called him, regales Providence with a one-man birthday show two days before his actual birthday, in a show billed simply as “John Waters is turning 78 and you’re invited to the party.” Enough said. Doors 7 p.m., show 8 p.m. At the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway. 18+. GA from $40. Details here .

NEWPORT BEER FEST

Hop on it, hops fans: Tickets to this beer fest are going fast. The 2024 Newport Beer Fest is April 20 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Expect some 50 breweries pouring brews for the rain-or-shine event, plus food for purchase — including Aquidneck Island Oyster Co., Newport Chowder Company, Binge BBQ, La Costa Lobster and Tacos, Cluck Truck and more — and live music. Ticket-buyers will be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the Fort Adams Trust’s annual Fourth of July celebration. From $65. 80 Fort Adams Drive. Details here .

DAFFY PARADES AND A FLOWER SHOW

Each April, Newport goes daffy, as they expect the blooming of nearly 1.5 million daffodils. The 13th Annual Newport Daffodil Days runs through April 28. Daffy highlights this week:

  • Watch a Daffodil Ride of costumed riders and decorated bikes April 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The route is from Touro Park to Ballard Park. According to their eventbrite , it’s sold out to ride, but you can watch the spectacle, and of course, take your own daffodil bike ride any day, any time.
  • It’s “Blithewold in Bloom: A 2024 American Daffodil Society Show” at Blithewold Gardens in Bristol April 20 and 21. According to billing, “Daffodil enthusiasts proudly display their flowers individually and in arrangements as they compete for awards and share their enthusiasm. The display will begin in Blithewold’s historic Carriage House Visitors Center and continue with floral arrangements placed throughout the first floor of the Mansion.” 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, included with regular admission. 101 Ferry Road, Bristol. Details here .
  • Driving Miss Daffodil: The 10th annual Audrain Automobile Museum Daffodil Parade, dubbed “Driving Miss Daffodil,” is April 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. (Check out the images on their site — I’m no car buff, but some of these rides look pretty sweet .) Prizes awarded to “best-dressed” car. The route is approximately 10 miles, and concludes at Audrain Cars & Coffee at Sachuest Beach. Participants can join the Cars & Coffee event. $50 per vehicle. Details here .
  • All these event details and more here .

BEN FOLDS & A RHODE ISLANDER

If you’re a ‘90s kid, you started singing either “Brick” or “Kate” aloud at your screen just seeing “Ben Folds.” The Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter/bestselling author/podcast host will be sans Five, but with a piano on April 24 at the Vets for “Ben Folds and a Piano.”

He’s also with a Rhode Islander. I&R — aka Josh Cournoyer — opens. A Coventry native now living in Nashville, you might know Cournoyer as the former frontman for Providence-based Northern Lands, according to The Vets. He also served as house manager for the Met in Pawtucket, and is a member of the founding board of directors for the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, was the assistant engineer on Folds’ ‘23 release “What Matters Most,” according to The Vets. Doors 6:30 p.m. show 7:30 p.m. From $44.50. 1 Avenue of the Arts. Learn more about Folds here and Cournoyer here .

THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN

Literally. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey rolls into PVD April 26. We’re getting into next week’s column-territory here, but expect six shows from April 26-28 at the AMP, including April 26 at 7 p.m. Some 75 performers hailing from 18 countries will put on a show that includes, according to a press release: stunts like “The Triangular Highwire, and “ Double Wheel of Destiny ,” comedic performances, “a modern take on clowning,” juggling, acrobatics, and dancing. Plus a skate park where BMX riders perform stunts, and trapeze artists, aerialists, music and more. 1 LaSalle Square. Tickets from $20. Details here .

Until next week, Rhody: Keep rockin.’
