3 things I learned road tripping across 12 states in our Tesla Model 3

We got our Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, estimated range of 267 miles, in June 2021. Last autumn, we took it on its first long voyage – 10 hours round trip to Florida. It did great, so when it came time to head cross country with our two cats from Florida to New Hampshire over three days, we decided to give it a go. Here’s how it went!

We undertook this mammoth drive because we’ve moved to New England. (Yes, we know it’s cold. No, we don’t care. We like it here.) Movers took the bulk of our stuff, and we pared our car gear down to the essentials. We put valuables – jewelry, important documents, and a fragile Victorian skeleton clock – in our frunk and shared a large suitcase that we put in the trunk, along with winter coats and boots, and cat paraphernalia. Like babies, cats travel with a lot of stuff.

Driving with two cats was initially a bit of a quandary, as the Model 3’s backseat isn’t big enough for larger animal carriers, and cats can’t sit in small enclosed carriers for three days. So we put our cats in their beds, buckled them in using retractable car seatbelts that clipped to their harnesses, and hoped for the best.

To our relief, our cat-transport strategy worked great. We have white seats in our Model 3. Seth Weintraub, Electrek ‘s publisher, told me when I was about to order our Model 3 that white Tesla seats wipe clean like a charm. He knows because he’s got kids and a big dog and cats as well. So we chose white, and he was right. Just to make sure, we put wipe-clean mats on the seats, and they came out unscathed. We also have rubber floor mats, which were handy for when the cats needed to use the litter box (when they gotta go, they gotta go). Here’s what our cats looked like in the backseat:

They didn’t love being in the car, but they weren’t distressed, either. They slept 95% of the time, and we breathed a sigh of relief at the end of the trip that there were no feline disasters.

What I learned: The Tesla Model 3 is a bit tight space-wise for a big road trip like this, but it’s doable. The seats are comfortable, and it’s animal-transport friendly. A big win. You don’t need an SUV to do this big East Coast drive comfortably.

Tesla Trip Planner

Tesla’s in-car Trip Planner makes any road trip easy. On the first day, we mapped from Clearwater, Florida, to Smithfield, North Carolina, where we stayed overnight in a hotel. (Next to the Supercharger. And a Dunkin Donuts. Because coffee.)

On day two, we drove from Smithfield to Chester County, Pennsylvania, where we stayed overnight with family. The car did a great job directing us through Washington, DC, traffic on a Friday afternoon. If you’ve ever driven in DC traffic, then you know that it’s not for the faint hearted. But all we had to do was look at our screen and listen carefully to voice directions. We didn’t miss a single turn or exit, even right in the heart of the city and heavy traffic.

On day three, we took a slightly different approach. Tesla wanted to take us straight through Manhattan. I lived in New York City for six years, and despite it being familiar territory, that was not my preferred route. So instead, we navigated to Tarrytown, New York, thus bypassing Manhattan, crossing the George Washington Bridge and skipping the Bronx. That’s not much fun, either, but it was better than Manhattan. So we kind of forced it to reroute us, and that worked fine. Once we left Tarrytown, we reset the route planner to Hanover, New Hampshire, and it was a straight, uncomplicated shot to New England.

What I learned: Your car, for the most part, will get you from point A to B efficiently. Like with the Manhattan rerouting experience, sometimes you have to route from stop to stop, rather than to your final destination, to force a route you want, but it was easy.

Performance-wise, everything in the car worked fine, bar about five minutes where the screen froze and then rebooted itself while we were driving through South Carolina in the dark. It was a bit unnerving, but we knew what was happening. We also knew how to manually reboot the computer if necessary – hold down both scroll buttons on the steering wheel until it reboots – and knew it could be done while driving.

(We didn’t use Autopilot. Don’t shout at me in the comments. We prefer to drive the car ourselves. We also don’t have Full-Self-Driving.)

Supercharging from Florida to New Hampshire

The overall Supercharging experience is great, period. People ask whether it’s annoying to have to stop for anywhere from 15 minutes to a half hour, and it’s not. It’s better to be able to walk, stretch, go to the bathroom, and get food and drinks. Plus, charging never held us up; it just encouraged us to do what we should do anyway. We never had to wait for charging to finish.

My Favorite Supercharger Award goes to Mount Laurel, right on the New Jersey Turnpike. It had clean bathrooms, Starbucks, a variety of food choices, was easily spotted from the road, and featured plenty of bays with no wait. (In fact, we never had to wait our turn to charge the entire trip.)

The Most Eccentric Tesla Supercharger Award goes to Summerton, South Carolina. It was easily spotted from the ramp, thanks to the red glow of the chargers since it was nighttime, but they sat next to a Stuckey’s that looked (and smelled) like it hadn’t been updated since 1956. We sat in the car eating snacks, listening to frogs, and watching stray cats run around the parking lot. It did the job, as it had a bathroom and drinks, but it was a little weird.

Cost-wise, the drive was free for us, because we had referral miles. Gas prices were all over $3.50 a gallon, so our trip, even if we’d paid for charging, still would have cost less than if we’d been driving a gas car.

What I learned: Tesla Supercharging is a seamless, easy experience that doesn’t delay your road trip. We got great range overall, never got anywhere near running out of charge, and set the speed limit to 80 mph so we didn’t get pulled over for speeding. (The car dinged us for coming close to 80 mph about 50 times, so clearly we needed that limit.)

However, there are two things that I’d really like to see Tesla do, going forward.

One, I’d love to see Tesla Superchargers under solar canopies. Then, you’d know you were charging with clean energy, and they’d also be easier to spot.

Which leads me to the only thing that we found annoying: the lack of signage directing Tesla drivers to Superchargers. Sure, your car directs you to the Superchargers. But more often than not, we had to play Easter egg hunt, because the car doesn’t tell you exactly where they are, and it’s not always intuitive to find them.

If Tesla would install signage at the interstate exit, and then more signs with arrows directing you to the actual Supercharger, that would make a huge difference. They’re almost always tucked way in the back of wherever, and more than once we ended up bickering and driving in circles because we couldn’t find them. I had to do Google Image searches to discover that, “Oh, they’re behind the Hardee’s, not the barbecue joint, like the Tesla website wrongly says.”

Flag Superchargers with big signs, Tesla, and it’ll boost the brand and the visibility, and thus confidence in the Tesla-curious yet range anxious, that there really are places to charge. The red glow helps, but if Superchargers were coupled with signs, it would make a huge difference. If McDonald’s can get the attention of motorists with giant telescopic signs hundreds of feet in the air, then Tesla can install some signs, too.

And not only does it offer route planning capabilities filtered especially for the model car you’re driving, but it also gives you access to the world’s biggest community of EV drivers. The benefits of this are many fold.

Users of the app can leave ratings, reviews, and photos for stations, and this can aid your decision-making about which charging stations to stop at, and which to avoid.

As you may already know, Tesla cars typically feature their own on-board trip planner, and using it has some very clear advantages…

Not only are you provided with the locations of recommended stops for charging up the EV, but it can also provide you with when it thinks you will need to recharge based on your driving and how much charge you have already used since the last charge.

And this is really valuable, because if at any point you get stuck in bad traffic, the amount of charge you use could come to more than you would otherwise expect.

But the other great thing about Tesla’s own trip planning is that you don’t have to wait until you’re in the car to use it…

Tesla also has a web based Go Anywhere tool that you can plan your trip on ahead of time.

It’s available on this link , and all you have to do is enter your location, your destination, and which model of car you drive, and it will automatically bring up the best possible route, and show you where charging points are along the route.

You’re probably wondering why we didn’t make Tesla’s own trip planner our number one pick.

Well the truth is, despite the Tesla brand being top of their game when it comes to producing EVs, the same cannot be said for their route planning, and it is well known that A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) is a much more accurate app that will take more variables into consideration.

Of course, we have tried this out for ourselves and were impressed with its simplicity and how it took charge usage into account when we got stuck in traffic.

When planning a trip anywhere, what could be better than using the world’s most thorough and up-to-date map app, Google Maps.

Google Maps covers more roads and alleyways than any other map out there. And it’s not only available through a web browser, you can also download it as an app.

And surprisingly, it’s not only available on Google or Android devices, you can get it on Apple iOS systems as well.

Better yet, to get charging stations highlighted along your intended route, all you have to do is tap ‘Add charging stop’ once you have entered your destination into the app, and Google Maps will then pull up EV charging stations along your route.

All you have to do at this point is select which charging stations to stop at. It really couldn’t get much easier to use

Then the app has the added bonus of providing you with voice directions as you drive on your route, so you can concentrate on keeping both eyes on the road ahead.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and that it had the most recent charging stations installed.

It has a very simple, easy to use user interface. It uses GPS to identify your current location, then you enter your destination, and a route will be produced on its maps, with the most appropriate charging stops highlighted for you.

But then it goes on to be even more useful. You can use it to bring up nearby amenities at any of the stops along the way, so you can hit a hotel, store, restaurant, toilet, and so on.

You can even select a preferred charging station based around what amenities you need.

And that’s not all – it can also check the availability of the next charging station, and if it is already taken, it will offer you a different option on or around the intended route. Handy, hey?

You can use your personal account to save route settings and favorite stations and addresses.

When we tried it out for ourselves, we found it very easy to use, and it came in really handy to be able to find the whereabouts of local amenities on our trip.

Tesla App Launches Trip Planner, Finally

Tesla’s mobile app was updated to version 4.20.69 today (naturally!) and the release notes indicate a couple of new updates, but one major addition is trip planning from the app.

According to the release notes, Tesla says “Phone Key pairing no longer requires your Key Card to complete”. It’s unclear why they removed this step as it seemed like an added security measure for adding a phone key to your Tesla.

Also new is the ability to “schedule service for Tesla Insurance claims for US customers.

But the major addition spotted by @Tesla_App_iOS is the addition of in-app trip planning for U.S. and Canadian owners.

How to use trip planning from the Tesla app? Launch the app and tap the Location tap. Search for a destination and then tap it, then you’ll see trip planning like you do in the car, listing your car’s starting battery state of charge and how much energy you’ll end up with at your destination.

If Supercharging is required, you’ll also see recommended stops and how long you need to charge for. Tapping “send to car” will send the directions to your vehicle.

We also see a new image asset for Superchargers with Magic Docks , plus an animation for site locks at locations in China.

Previously, Tesla owners had to use third-party apps such as A Better Routeplanner to see an overview of battery usage for trips, but now you can get it right from the Tesla app.

Of course, there are many other good EV route planners but these two are among the best and highly recommended for planning Tesla road trips.

We did a survey to find out what app other Tesla owners preferred using when going on Tesla road trips.

Results from the survey showed that 99% recommended two route planner apps: (Tesla navigation and ABRP) and only 1% recommended Waze and Plugshare.

I’d recommend you use both apps together. That is because ABRP is great for planning a road trip and the Tesla Navigation is best for actual navigation during the trip.

It will route based on what’s happening in real-time

It is best to use the in-car Tesla Navigation when driving as opposed to ABRP mainly because it will route you based on what’s happening in real-time, like traffic, full chargers, etc.

This means it does more live determinations while you are in transit than ABRP.

For example, during our Tesla road trips, we have experienced times where the car reroutes us if the chargers are occupied . I.e. it finds nearby chargers and reroutes us. This ends up saving us time during road trips.

It allows the car to precondition before arriving at a Supercharger

This will help speed up the charging, thereby saving you time at the charging stop.

Do not expect the trip planner to be 100% accurate

About 90% of the time when planning a trip, the charging times are always never the same as what you see on the EV trip planners.

Take, for instance, your Tesla trip planner predicted that you would arrive at a Supercharger with about 40% charge only to end up arriving with 10%.

This means that you will either have to charge for longer than you had planned on the trip planner or consume enough charge to take you to the next available/closest charge stop.

And this explains why you always see charging time differences when planning a trip on ABRP vs. the in-built Tesla route planner. This also applies to other EV trip planner apps.

Once you start driving, the car will constantly be evaluating whether it will manage to arrive at the next charging stop, or reroute you based on how much charge you have.

Most of the time, during a charging session, you will never see a perfect 250kW or 150kW. Sometimes, this may even end up changing your entire original plan on the trip planner.

Additionally, if you stop at a 150kW paired charger and someone pulls over right next to you, this means you will have a longer charging time than what the trip planner had originally predicted.

How to Access the Tesla Trip Planner in the Tesla App

To access the Tesla Trip Planner, follow these simple steps:

Open your Tesla app
Scroll down and click on Location
Locate the Navigation Input Box (at the bottom)

Input Your Destination

Once you’ve accessed the Navigation Input Box, it’s time to enter your desired destination. After inputting your destination, the app will automatically calculate your route, including all necessary charging stops and times, based on your Tesla’s current charge level.

Adjust Charge Levels Before Departure

Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet

Click on Directions to calculate your route

Elon Musk today announced his decision to postpone a key visit to India to expand Tesla market due to ‘very heavy Tesla obligations’.

"Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Elon Musk wrote on X. Surprisingly only last week, Elon Musk confirmed his meeting with PM Modi in India. Musk's high profile visit was expected to be a win-win for both India and Tesla. He was expected to announce an investment of 2-3 billion dollars, to build a factory in India, in line with PM Modi's Made in India plans.

Now, the visit stands postponed ‘until later this year’ and so does his decision to expand his ambitious Starlink project in India . Musk is also awaiting Indian government regulatory approvals to begin offering his Starlink satellite broadband services in the world's most populous country.

Rohan Patel: Man core to Tesla's India entry plans exited company

However it's interesting to note that Rohal Patel, Tesla's vice president of public policy and business development exited the company on April 15. He was a core team member of its India expansion plans. On the same days Drew Baglino, vice president of powertrain and energy engineering also left the company on April 15. Both of them separately announced their departure on X and were thanked by Elon Musk.

“My immigrant parents worked their asses off and as a result I’m the luckiest dude. Lucky to have been a part of @BarackObama’s campaign/administration, and truly honored to have worked at @Tesla to positively changing multiple industries,” Rohan posted on X .

To which Elon replied, “Thanks for everything you’ve done for Tesla. Much appreciated.”

Patel had joined Tesla in 2016 after working as a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama on climate and energy issues, among other policy matters.

Has Elon Musk set aside affordable EV plans?

A 2023 Reuters Report stated that Rohan Patel was in New Delhi to meet officials from the Invest India agency to discuss Tesla plan. Agency also reported that Tesla representatives were expected to meet commerce minister Piyush Goyal, with discussions expected to centre on setting up an EV supply chain and land allotment for a factory.

Reuters recently reported that Tesla has set aside plans to make a more affordable new EV at Musk’s direction. The stark reversal reportedly comes as Tesla faces fierce competition globally from Chinese electric-vehicle makers flooding the market with cars priced as low as $10,000. To which Musk posted that "Reuters is lying" after the report, without citing any inaccuracies. He has not spoken further about the model, leaving investors clamouring for clarity.

Tesla loses all gains made over past one year?

Tesla's books are in the red currently with its share tumbling below $150/share and giving up all gains made over the past year. This comes after Reuters report on company's plan to halt affordable EV plans. The electric vehicle maker is reeling under falling sales and steep discounts intended to lure more buyers.

According to reports it's been a bad year for employees. Tesla has announced cutting 10% of its staff globally, about 14,000 jobs. It would also try to re-instate Musk's $56 billion pay package that was rejected by a Delaware judge.

While some EV owners have shared horror stories about taking an electric car on a road trip, some Tesla owners say those drivers probably just haven't mastered the learning curve yet.

Eight Tesla veterans and a first-time Tesla renter shared some tips on how to execute a successful EV road trip in a series of conversations with Insider — from avoiding certain routes to planning ahead and getting creative on the road.

Range anxiety and a lack of charging infrastructure are key hurdles when it comes to EV adoption, but Tesla owners say it's possible to ditch concerns about charging on the road and even lean into some of the benefits of taking an electric car across the country, including saving on gas and enjoying Tesla amenities like Autopilot . Still, some drivers say road trips in a Tesla can be a major headache.

Here's what Tesla owners say about their experiences taking the car on a long road trip.

Most people's first road trip can be anxiety-ridden, but learn to trust the car, owners said.

Many Tesla owners said it's common to feel anxious on your first EV road trip.

"After the first outbound trip when I was being very careful and charging to a higher percentage than necessary at each stop, I learned to trust what my Tesla was telling me about the state of charge, my expected range, and that there were chargers along the way," Dennis Duncan, a Model Y owner who has taken his EV on cross-country trips, including on an annual trip from Washington state to Montana, told Insider.

<p>"Start somewhere within 200 miles of your origin and become accustomed to the range and how your driving impacts it," said Ken Vizena, a Model Y owner who has taken his vehicle on numerous cross-country trips. "Don't start off driving cross country. Start off with medium trips in hugely populated areas."</p><p>Vizena said it's important to pay attention to not only how many charging stations are along your route, but also where they are located along the path. He said new Tesla owners should ask themselves several questions before they set off on a road trip with their EV, namely: How far off course will the chargers take you? Are they located in areas where you would feel safe waiting?</p>

It's best to start out with smaller trips and stay near interstates, drivers said.

"Don't start off driving cross country. Start off with medium trips in hugely populated areas."

Vizena said it's important to pay attention to not only how many charging stations are along your route, but also where they are located along the path. He said new Tesla owners should ask themselves several questions before they set off on a road trip with their EV, namely: How far off course will the chargers take you? Are they located in areas where you would feel safe waiting?

Most Tesla owners agree the Supercharger network is a major advantage.

Tesla has spent over a decade building out more than 20,000 Superchargers in North America, earning it the region's largest network of roadside fast chargers. Moreover, Superchargers are widely regarded as more reliable and easy to use than other networks' chargers. Non-Tesla EV owners rely on a shakier patchwork of public chargers , which can be difficult to find and are plagued by reliability issues .

"I couldn't even imagine being with another car company and relying on third-party chargers," Jonathan Baalke, a Model 3 owner in Kentucky who says he drives over 150 miles a day for work, previously told Insider. "It's hard to have range anxiety when you have access to Tesla's network, but if I was with any other brand's cars, I would definitely have some concerns."

More recently, the EV company has said it plans to open some of its exclusive Supercharger network to non-Tesla EV companies like Ford and General Motors .

<p>"I stop to charge about every four hours," David Craig, a Model S owner who recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-camping-for-ev-road-trip-2023-8">took his Tesla on a 8,500-mile road trip,</a> said. "It's just a natural stopping point. Even if you were driving a traditional car you'd want to take breaks and fuel up. I plug it in at a Supercharger and usually there's a restaurant nearby where I grab lunch."</p><p>A Supercharger can recharge a Tesla with up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, according to the <a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/charging#:~:text=The%20Tesla%20Supercharger%20is%20the,200%20miles%20in%2015%20minutes.">company's website</a>. A Model 3 standard vehicle delivers an estimated range of about 333 miles, <a href="https://www.tesla.com/model3">according to Tesla.</a> And the carmaker's longest-range vehicle, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longest-range-electric-cars-2023-3#2-tesla-model-s-405-miles-20">Model S, can deliver an estimated range </a>of up to 405 miles, the <a href="https://www.tesla.com/models">company says.</a></p>

Some Tesla owners said charging on your road trip isn't too bad if you use it as a natural break to eat lunch or stretch your legs — so long as you're at a Supercharger.

"I stop to charge about every four hours," David Craig, a Model S owner who recently took his Tesla on a 8,500-mile road trip, said. "It's just a natural stopping point. Even if you were driving a traditional car you'd want to take breaks and fuel up. I plug it in at a Supercharger and usually there's a restaurant nearby where I grab lunch."

A Supercharger can recharge a Tesla with up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, according to the company's website . A Model 3 standard vehicle delivers an estimated range of about 333 miles, according to Tesla. And the carmaker's longest-range vehicle, the Model S, can deliver an estimated range of up to 405 miles, the company says.

<p>Brian Loughman, a Model 3 owner, said he typically relies solely on the internal navigation system, which incorporates charging sites into the journey and alerts drivers to which charging sites it predicts will be most efficient and which ones are busier. Other Tesla owners said they feel comfortable relying solely on the car's internal navigation system.

Brian Loughman, a Model 3 owner, said he typically relies solely on the internal navigation system, which incorporates charging sites into the journey and alerts drivers to which charging sites it predicts will be most efficient and which ones are busier. It's a favorite feature among Tesla owners.

"Hop in the car while connected to your home charger and program the full route into the car," Loughman told Insider over email. "It will tell you where to stop, how low your battery will be when you get there, and how many minutes you'll need to charge before continuing on your route."

Though, sometimes the internal navigation system can lead you astray, some Tesla owners said.

Some rural routes you might want to avoid altogether, some Tesla owners said.

Scholtz said the couple attempted to trickle-charge at another point in their journey, but it took too long.

Even so, It's not the end of the world if you can't find a Supercharger.

If you have the patience, you can get by with trickle-charging, some Tesla owners said.

Zuga said he likes to charge his Tesla at RV outlets when he camps. Becker said it makes sense to trickle-charge or use a slower, Level 1 charger, if you're staying in one place for a while.

A trickle charge can take up to 50 hours or more to bring an EV from empty to 80% of capacity, while a Level 2 charger can do so in four to 10 hours, according to the Department of Transportation.

Insider previously reported that a Model Y owner used a trickle-charge to visit a remote monument in California. "It was only a standard 120V outlet, so we would be trickle charging , not supercharging, but that was sufficient to more than replace, overnight, whatever energy we used on our daily excursions around the Monument," the Model Y owner, Kathleen Goforth said in a blog post about her road trip.

<p>"If you're in a major hurry to get to your destination an EV might not be the best idea," Scholtz said. "It will take longer to charge than filling up your tank. It will take time to find chargers on your route, and sometimes those chargers take you off a direct route. Also, if you're driving too fast that will only <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/317340/heres-how-speed-impacts-range-of-the-tesla-model-s/#:~:text=At%20a%20constant%20speed%20of,the%20rating%20at%2055%20mph.">decrease your range.</a>"</p>

Don't be in too much of a hurry; just enjoy the journey, some Tesla owners said.

"If you're in a major hurry to get to your destination an EV might not be the best idea," Scholtz said. "It will take longer to charge than filling up your tank. It will take time to find chargers on your route, and sometimes those chargers take you off a direct route. Also, if you're driving too fast that will only decrease your range. "

<p>Some Tesla owners say they've gone years without bringing their EV into a repair shop.</p><p>For comparison, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles need to have their oil changed every few months, or between <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a26590646/how-often-to-change-oil/">every 7,500 to 10,000 miles</a>. And older ICE cars require oil changes every 3,000 miles.</p><p>ICE vehicle owners also need to <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a26407325/when-replace-brake-pads/">replace their brake pads</a> about every 10,000 to 20,000 miles.</p><p>Meanwhile, an electric car will <a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/vehicle-maintenance#:~:text=your%20Tesla%20vehicle.-,Unlike%20gasoline%20cars%2C%20Tesla%20vehicles%20require%20no%20traditional%20oil%20changes,reducing%20wear%20on%20the%20brakes.">never need</a> an oil change, new fuel filter, spark plugs, or emission checks. Similarly, Teslas use <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/what-is-regenerative-braking">regenerative braking,</a> which means the brake pads <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1078010341651492865?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1078010341651492865&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fkinja.com%2Fajax%2Finset%2Fiframe%3Fautosize%3D1%26id%3Dtwitter-1078010341651492865">very rarely</a> need to be replaced, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.</p><p><a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-repair-maintenance/car-brands-and-models-that-can-save-you-money-over-time-a9081677414/">Consumer Reports</a> found that Teslas were the cheapest cars to own when it comes to costs of repairs and maintenance for the first five years of ownership.</p><p>Many Tesla owners said the only times they visited service centers were for issues that were covered by the carmaker's warranty or for collisions.</p><p>"I've spent about $800 in seven years of owning my Tesla," Robbie Mack, a former Tesla salesman and owner of a Model S, said. "One of the fixes was my fault because I went over a curb."</p>

There are also some perks to taking a Tesla on a road trip. Owners said they have fewer worries about maintenance issues on long trips.

"A lot more can fail on an internal combustion engine," Craig said. "Your biggest worry with a Tesla is that you'll get a flat tire.

Driving a Tesla means no more oil changes, and an EV requires less upkeep overall, according to data from Consumer Reports .

"With an ICE vehicle there is anxiety about a variety of mechanical things like overheating, engine problems of many kinds, or brake burnout going down major grades or in mountain driving," Duncan said. "A Tesla won't overheat and actually recharges your battery going downhill instead of overheating and wearing out your brakes."

Though, Teslas aren't fully immune to breaks. Vizena said he had to spend an entire road trip with a broken air conditioner in his Tesla and showed a picture where the internal temperature in his car reached 99 degrees.

Tesla owners also enjoy not having to spend money on gas during long road trips.

As of July, the average electric car owner could save between $1,000 to $1,200 per year in fuel costs as compared to using an EV charger, according to Consumer Reports. The publication found that EV owners will continue to save money in overall operating and maintenance costs as long as the price for gasoline remains above 50 cents per gallon.

"It's hard to explain the glee of driving by a gas station knowing you don't have to worry about the prices anymore," Nelson Jackson, a Model S owner, previously told Insider.

The car can also be ideal for camping, one owner said.

Craig said he used Tesla's Camp Mode to sleep in his Model S during his 19-day road trip.

The feature lets the car keep a steady temperature in the cabin, as well as proper airflow. You can also listen to music, stream television, turn on lights, or charge devices while the vehicle is in the mode. The feature , which was introduced in 2021, uses significantly less energy and even has a video of a crackling fire.

It is one of many specialized Tesla features , including Dog Mode and Sentry Mode.

"With a traditional car you'd have to turn it off, it would get cold and you have to turn it back on," Craig said. "In my Tesla, the temperature stays perfect and I'm comfortable all night long."

<p>All Tesla models are equipped with the Autopilot feature, which enables a car to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within its lane. The function does not replace the role of a driver, but is intended to make driving easier and cut down on accidents. Some drivers can also opt into Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, a beta feature that costs $15,000 — or $199 per month — and allows the vehicle to change lanes, as well as recognize stop lights and stop signs.</p><p>Earlier this year, Model S owner Tim Heckman told Insider the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-driver-road-trip-using-full-self-driving-autopilot-fsd-2023-1">driver assist features were a "lifesaver"</a> on his 6,392-mile road trip.</p><p>"It can be a huge cognitive relief. Long trips can take a mental toll," Heckman said at the time, noting that he'sd used Autopilot on previous road trips and discovered he could drive further without getting tired.</p><p>Zuga told Insider Autopilot is one of several features that he feels make road trips less stressful and safer in a Tesla.</p><p>"Driving that car is a lot less tiring than driving a gas vehicle because of all of the extra driver features like the cameras all around the car and Autopilot," Zuga said. "I can put the blinker on and get a good look of the whole left side and behind and when I'm slowing down and regenerative braking kicks in and you know your tailights are on. It just gives you better situational awareness."</p><p>But, not everyone is sold on the features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-involved-in-273-car-crashes-nhtsa-adas-data-2022-6?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=yahoo.com" rel="nofollow noopener">investigating Autopilot</a> and its potential connection to several accidents and the California Department of Motor Vehicles has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-bill-tesla-full-self-driving-software-name-marketing-2022-9" rel="">accused the company</a> of falsely advertising its Autopilot and FSD features.</p>

Despite the perks, some road trippers say they'd still rather stick to a traditional vehicle.

Scholtz said he wasn't fully sold on buying a Tesla after he rented one through Hertz for his road trip. He said his experience renting the EV went downhill fast when he had to take it to more rural areas and he faced a lot of stress with the vehicle's range, as well as finding chargers along his route.

"It was nail biting," Scholtz said, adding that while he thinks the Model 3 is a great car it doesn't fit his lifestyle.

"I still prefer my F-150 with its 40 gallon tank that gives me a 700 miles range."

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Elon Musk postponed a planned trip to India where he was to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing obligations at his Tesla automaker and saying he aimed to reschedule the visit for later this year.

"Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk posted on his X social media platform.

Reuters reported the postponement on Saturday, citing four people familiar with the matter. The trip was to have included the announcement of plans for the electric vehicle (EV) maker to enter the South Asian market, Reuters has reported.

The CEO and the prime minister are both at critical junctures.

Tesla could have used the India announcement to try to reassure investors after months of share-price declines and the news on April 15 that it would lay off more than 10% of its global workforce.

Musk is expected to face tough questions from analysts when Tesla announces quarterly results on Tuesday about falling sales, rising competition from Chinese EV makers and the fate of key future Tesla products.

Reuters reported on April 5 that Tesla had halted development of its long-awaited affordable EV, often called the Model 2. Musk posted that "Reuters is lying" after the report, without citing any inaccuracies. He has not spoken further about the model, leaving investors clamouring for clarity.

Rohan Patel, a Tesla public policy executive who, according to sources, was one of those leading the company's India entry plans, also resigned this week.

Musk would have arrived on Sunday, two days after the start of India's nation election, in which Modi is forecast to win a rare third term. Modi wants to highlight progress toward promises of making India a global manufacturing hub.

After Reuters reported Musk's India trip plans on April 10, he posted on X that he was "Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!"

In New Delhi, Musk was expected to announce an investment of $2 billion to $3 billion, mainly to build a factory in India, after the government announced a policy lowering high tariffs on imported cars if companies invest locally, Reuters has reported.

He was also expected to meet executives from several space startups in New Delhi. Musk is awaiting Indian government regulatory approvals to begin offering his Starlink satellite broadband services in the world's most populous country.

A cheaper Tesla is back on the menu

Tesla says it will build more affordable electric vehicles — perhaps as soon as 2025 — refuting recent reports that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had canceled plans for a cheaper “Model 2” vehicle in favor of getting a robotaxi out the door. But Musk didn’t clarify whether the lower-cost EV would be a brand new model for Tesla or simplified versions of its current vehicles.

“In terms of a new product roadmap, there’s been a lot of talk,” Musk said during the company’s first quarter earnings call, addressing the concerns investors have expressed over the past month about the delayed plans for a low-cost EV. “We’ve updated our future vehicle lineup to accelerate the launch of new models.” Musk said we might see the vehicles in early 2025, if not later this year.

“In terms of a new product roadmap, there’s been a lot of talk”

The vehicles will blend “aspects” of a next-generation platform with the current platform that undergirds the company’s top-selling Model 3 and Model Y. “This is not contingent on a new factory or massive new production lines, it’ll be made on our current production lines much more efficiently,” Musk said, predicting it could accelerate the company’s production to over 3 million vehicles a year.

Tesla has reported $21 billion in revenue for the first quarter of 2024, a 9 percent drop year over year. Net income dropped 55 percent to $1.1 billion. The company sold fewer models this quarter as demand for electric vehicles cooled. Analysts say a more affordable model is crucial to Tesla’s future growth.

Musk started the call by addressing concerns that the market is emphasizing the development of hybrid vehicles over fully electric ones, which he believes is “not the right strategy.”

“We’ll talk about this more on August 8th.”

Although Tesla is again promising to release cheaper EVs, it hasn’t confirmed whether entirely new cheap models will come. It’s possible cheaper models could just be stripped down Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which alone drive the majority of the company’s revenues.

Right now, you can buy a Model 3 for $38,990, which is nearly the cheapest the vehicle has ever been — but still not at the elusive $35,000 price point that was promised almost a decade ago. The company has promised that a simplified “unboxed” manufacturing process will bring down costs even further.

When asked directly by an investor about cheaper EVs like Model 2 and where Musk’s “heart is at,” Musk largely shut down on the subject. In contrast, he was happy to go on at length about autonomy, self-driving, and even aliens.

“If you have a great product at a great price, sales will be excellent,” Musk said at one point, responding to a question about value. He said Tesla will keep improving affordability to make the “value for money” better.
