If there’s one thing South Korea has down to a fine art, it’s public transport. The public transport system here is extensive and efficient so it’s not necessary to have your own wheels. If you’re planning to venture outside of the major cities, however, a car may be convenient.

The best times to visit Seoul are generally considered to be from March to May and from September to November as the weather is mild and pleasant. If, however, you dream of snow-capped mountains, aim to visit between December and February when the average daily temperatures hover around freezing and fresh powder is common. The summer months are known as the monsoon season, so perhaps rethink or pack an umbrella.

Eat delicious food, party, explore ancient temples, listen to quirky K-Pop, karaoke, party, take in awe-inspiring landscapes, and that’s just the beginning. One thing is for certain, it’s almost impossible to be bored in South Korea.

You could spend weeks here and still have more to see and do. At a minimum, one week is recommended, but be prepared to leave wanting more.

Flight from USA to Dubai was comfortable. There is some serious miscommunication between the staff who does checkin and immigration staff in India. Air Suvidha rules are enforced here as a requirement by the Indian government and without it not allowed to board the flight. The Indian authorities don’t even bother to check it. Please update either side of aisle. Vegetarian food from Dubai to Bombay was not that great at all. It was cold and chewy. Dubai being a hub can provide better options. Staff is very good and took good care of passengers. Please appreciate their hard work.

The crew was great and the food and liquor offerings were good. Seats were a bit cramped. Flight arrived early at destination. That's a plus.

Vistara i bought a biz class fare but a few days before vistara always changes my biz class flight to economy .. happened to me 4 times .. seated could be wider .. boarding could be more organized .. crew did their best but not enough resources all in all very poor experience Qatar Delhi .. only complain .. no clear signage to lounge for transferring pax .. its a Delhi shot coming.. no feeling of exclusivity for biz/ 1st class pax.. but everything else was much better .. once i boarded Qatar .. i loved it Qatar to Washington .. only complain i boarding .. too crowded .. no separate area for biz/1st class should hav completely separate area for upper class.. security is stifling pax comfort by the gate ..but everything else was great

Service and boarding is good in brussels But in Qatar, boarding needs to be improved and waiting in very big queue for boarding. Parents with kids needs to be given some priority also.

The check in staff was amazing. Best customer service! The plane was old! My entertainment on the first flight didn't work at all, in my seat or in the seat next to me. The bathroom doors were old and troublesome. One of the bathrooms, the whole sink panel was broken. Everything felt old and falling apart. The airline stewardesses were amazing and quite hospitable. When there were delays, they kept us well informed. Transit was GREAT! I wasn't sure how I would make it to my next flight in 1 1/2 hours but the security lines were short and efficient. The C gates in Addis Ababa were CROWDED! That whole space downstairs was too crowded and challenging to manuever. I usually fly Ethiopian within Africa and was interested to see how the experience would be intercontinental. Overall, I would choose it again if it was cheaper than Delta/Air France or Lufthansa/KLM. I wouldn't make it a first choice if the prices were the same because the planes are so old! The food and entertainment also weren't as good. Good selection of movies but as I mentioned, on the first flight they didn't work at all (I slept so it was okay) and the 2nd flight it was glitchy. All in all, I didn't hate it but it would be a first choice only if it's cheaper.

The flight was delayed for almost 5 hours, but I understand that it was not up to the company, however how they could handle the situation better, they never apologized for that delay, moreover despite passengers being there for 7 hours only thing they did was to give a bowl of instant noodles, afterwards on the plane tiny snacks, people were there starting from lunch time and we’ve arrived to destination at almost midnight

Flight was delayed for 2 hours for no reason, then we spent almost an hour after boarding because of the weather conditions. If we left on time we could avoid that 😾

If you are just starting out the planning process you may still be deliberating on whether South Korea is even the best place for you to visit.

South Korea has an amazingly rich culture and long history.

There are many cultural sites to visit and incredible experiences, such as temples and palaces. This includes a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Bulguska Temple and the lava tubes in Jeju.

The cities are full of unique modern designs and high-tech displays and shopping malls while beautiful nature and scenery are also easily accessible.

Whether you like beach activities, hiking, shopping, cultural experiences, or a mix of everything, there is something for everyone to enjoy in South Korea.

Best Time Of The Year to Visit South Korea  

South Korea is very seasonal and the climate is the only thing that changes.

There can be large differences in available activities, recommended places to visit, and things to do depending on the season. 

Spring  

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Korea and for good reason. The weather is clear, the temperature is moderate and flowers are blooming.

If you enjoy outdoor pursuits, this is one of the best times to be in Korea.

It is also the time of cherry blossoms, and if you time your visit right you could be treated to a magnificent display of pink and white blossoms.

However, the flowers aren’t limited to cherry blossoms, with flower fields across the country of plum blossoms, azaleas, and roses.

Spring can be cool at night and might be difficult for those who have bad hay fever or pollen allergies. 

Summer  

Summer in Korea can be very changeable with the monsoon season hitting in August.

It is also very humid in summer, so while the temperature isn’t too hot, the humidity can be difficult to deal with.

However, it can be a great time to visit if you plan on visiting some of the coastal areas or islands.

It can also be good for enjoying balmy evenings with casual outdoor eating and a relaxed holiday atmosphere as schools and universities are on summer vacation.  

Autumn  

Autumn is a beautiful time in South Korea with vibrant autumn foliage to be seen in many places. This time of year is ideal for hiking and climbing mountains.

It is also a good time to visit the many palaces populated by autumnal maple and ginkgo trees.

Autumn is also the time of Chuseok, the Korean harvest festival celebration.

Many Chuseok events are held during this time and can be a great way to have a unique cultural experience while in South Korea. 

Winter  

Winter in Korea can be very cold, with temperatures reaching negative and snowstorms.

However, it is also a beautiful time of year if you enjoy the winter scenery. The snow-topped mountains can be very picturesque and it is great for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities.

Winter is also the time of the Lunar New Year celebrations, which can be easily enjoyed as a cultural experience.

It is also the time of Christmas and western New Year, which can be interesting to experience in a different country and culture than your own.  

How Many Days In South Korea?  

An essential part of planning a trip to South Korea is deciding how long to spend there.

Finding the balance between too short and too long can seem difficult, especially without already having experience in Korea.

Luckily, a visit to Korea can be quite versatile, depending on where you plan to visit.  

Longer is generally better, as it will give you more time to visit different cities, take various day trips and see more of the country.

However, it is easily possible to have a short trip and just stick to one city.

If you have a bit longer in the country, you can visit cities such as Busan, and utilize our Busan itinerary .

A longer itinerary can also allow for taking more time in each location and having more downtime.

The range of places to visit and things to do means it is unlikely that you could run out of things to do, and the variation from traditional temples to modern shopping malls, palaces to theme parks, means it is unlikely to become repetitive.  

In summary, the longer you can make your itinerary, the better, but if you only have a short amount of time available, it is still possible to have a great time on a shorter trip.

Dos And Don’ts In South Korea  

When visiting another country and culture, it is always important to be aware of cultural etiquette and common dos and don’ts of the country.

This can be related to social manners or simply making your trip easier.  

Learn Basic Korean Words  

While traveling in Korea, it can be beneficial to learn a few basic Korean words and phrases.

Important phrases like “Excuse me,” “I’m sorry,” and “thank you” can come in very helpful and will be appreciated by those around you.

Some simple words like ‘this’ and ‘that’ as well as question words, including what, where, and how much, can be very useful in getting around and working things out on the go.

Using translation apps or tools like Google Translate is another useful option.  Here is a list of more handy Korean apps.

Tipping In South Korea  

Tipping at a bar or restaurant in South Korea is not necessary or expected.

Some high-end restaurants may have the opportunity to tip if you want to, but it’s never an expectation.

In some cases, tipping can be seen as rude as it can imply that the employee or the business doesn’t have enough money and needs pity.

Overall, it is safer to just not tip in South Korea unless there is an explicit prompt. In these cases, it is still completely your choice and you are free to not tip.  

Bring Cash  

When traveling in Korea, having cash on hand is extremely useful.

While credit cards have become more common in recent years and many businesses do accept credit cards, not all credit cards will be available to be used and there is always the possibility of a restaurant or shop not accepting cards at all.

For this reason, having a good amount of cash with you is essential.

ATMs can also be hit-or-miss as some will work with foreign cards while others won’t.

It is a good idea to remove a decent amount at a time in case you can’t find another ATM to withdraw from easily.  

Photography  

It is common to want to take photos and document all the amazing sights, foods, and places you’re experiencing while on vacation.

However, it is important to be careful when taking photos in public.

In some countries, including South Korea, the right to privacy extends into the public sphere, meaning photos, where someone is easily identifiable, can be illegal.

Of course, a photo taken in a crowded place will likely have people in it and it is unlikely that you will be challenged over this but taking a photo of a specific person or group of people may bring issues.  

Priority Seating  

Most buses and trains in Korea have a designated area for priority seating.

This seating is reserved for elderly, pregnant, or disabled people.

These seats should be left empty unless someone from one of those categories is using them.

While it may seem ok to sit down and just move if someone who needs them enters the train or bus, this can still be seen as rude and it is best to just stand if no other seats are available.  

Korea Trip Budget  

A trip to Korea can be quite reasonably priced as the number of expenses is fairly low.

Categories like food are often cheap day-to-day.

The more expensive categories include accommodation, which can range from cheaper hostel-style accommodation to more expensive hotels.

Accommodation in the main cities tends to be more expensive than in smaller cities or the countryside.  

Transport costs can vary a lot depending on how much traveling around the country you wish to do and what transport methods you use.

For long-distance travel, there are some train passes that can offset the costs somewhat, or you can use a rental car.

While in the city, buses and trains are fairly easy to use and budget-friendly. Taking a taxi is more expensive but may be easier when visiting certain places.  

Overall, Korea is a very accessible country on a range of budgets.

Prices will change over time usually in a U-curve shape, starting high, slowly becoming cheaper, and then moving back towards expensive as it gets closer to the travel date.

The absolute lowest point is unpredictable but usually falls around 4-6 months before the travel dates.

The earlier you start checking the prices, the easier it will be to have a good idea of when you’re seeing ‘good’ prices and whether it is likely to fall further or not.

This may be more difficult to find in more rural areas.

However, while the quality of medical care is high, costs as a tourist can also be quite high. Having a travel insurance policy in place to cover these costs can help relieve stress in a high-pressure situation.

It is important to make sure you know what your policy covers and not always go for the cheapest option, as sometimes this can lead to expensive surprises when an accident does occur.

It is also best to get a policy that can cover costs as they happen, rather than paying upfront and receiving reimbursement later.

Passports And Visa  

Many countries have a visa-waiver agreement with South Korea, meaning you do not need a visa to enter for tourism purposes.

This includes many parts of Europe, North America, much of South America, Oceania, and a number of Asian countries.

If you are from a country that is part of the visa-waiver agreement you will still need to apply for a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization or K-ETA.

This will require some personal details, your passport details, and a payment of 10,000KRW (approx. $10 USD).

This should be approved in a short period of time.

This application can be done on the official Korean website.

Covid Testing And Q Code  

Korea has had constantly changing and often strict rules regarding entry during the last few years.

Covid-19 has led to pre-departure tests, on-arrival tests, and varying quarantines.

However, as of 1 October 2022, travelers no longer need to have testing either pre-departure or on-arrival and quarantine is no longer necessary. 

You will need to apply for Q-code to enter South Korea.

This is a QR code that will be issued to you after applying and will contain your relevant health and contact information.

This application must be done no more than 3 days prior to entry.

The DMZ  

Many people consider the DMZ a must-see while visiting South Korea.

The DMZ, or demilitarized zone, is the zone surrounding the border of South Korea and North Korea.

This is one of the few remainders of the Cold War that is still active, as the Korean War never officially ended and the two Koreas remain in an official state of conflict.

This border can only be visited on an organized tour due to the sensitivity of the area. Some tours also include the JSA or Joint Security Area, the actual borderline passing through the barracks on site.

Visiting this area is a unique look at how history and the present can intertwine.  

Note that the JSA is currently closed. We don’t know if and when it will reopen.

However, a visit to the DMZ stills gives you a unique understanding of North and South Korea’s history.

Jeonju  

Jeonju has a unique place in Korean history as the birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty, the rulers of Korea from 1392 until the early 20 th Century.

For this reason, the city is steeped in history and tradition, with many cultural sites.

This long historical period gave rise to many rich cultural pursuits and uniquely Korean innovations. These include traditional Korean wine, paper, and dolls.  

Jeonju is well-known for its Hanok Village, an area of the city with predominantly Hanok buildings.

This is a style of building based on traditional Korean ways of thinking and architectural design.

It involves the ideal placement of a home, how to keep the building comfortable and temperate throughout the changing seasons, and catering to the social needs of the time.

Many of these traditional houses are still in existence and can be seen in the Jeonju Hanok Village.   You can even spend the night in one of them.

There are also a number of historic sites in Jeonju as well as museums commemorating Korean history and tradition.

Gyeongju  

Gyeongju, one of the most beautiful places in South Korea, is another historic city in South Korea.

It was the main capital of the Silla Kingdom which ruled the Korean Peninsula from 57BC – 935AD.

This long history has led to a number of historic and culturally significant sites in Gyeongju, including a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In fact, the sheer number of historic sites is the reason behind the city’s nickname of “the museum without walls” or “the museum without a roof”.  

There are many historical temples and palaces in Gyeongju, documenting the history of religion and the kingdom during this time.

It is also home to Cheomseongdae, one of the oldest astronomical observatories in Asia.

It dates to the 7 th Century and is amazing to visit for both historical reasons and the astronomical illuminations that are regularly displayed.  

Gyeongju is also home to the UNESCO Gyeongju Historic Area, an entire area of historic ruins and relics. This area has museums, ruins to explore, serene temples, and more.

The city of Gyeongju is a must-see for anyone interested in history, Korean culture, or both.

The behemoth of accommodation Booking, Booking.com is just as active in South Korea as in other countries.

The majority of hotels can be found on Booking.com and the popularity of the site means there are often plenty of reviews which can be helpful in deciding on accommodation.

Agoda  

Agoda is another big name in the accommodation booking business, although slightly less well-known than booking.com.

It is also part of the Booking.com group and so contains many of the same hotels.

However, as it was started in Asia, there are sometimes hotels listed which haven’t made it to Booking.com and sometimes deals are listed on Agoda but not booking.com.

VRBO  

If you are traveling with a family or just want a bit more space, staying in a VRBO or accommodation rental may be the answer.

Many hotel rooms in Korea can be small or feel cramped, and a full apartment to yourself may be a better alternative.

This also gives you the freedom to cook for yourself and more space if you need some relaxing time.

Special Accommodations In South Korea  

If you’re looking for a more unique accommodation experience while in South Korea, a hanok stay may be ideal for you.

These traditional houses can be found in many places throughout the country and are a step back in time to traditional Korea and the architecture and design of the period.

Most hanok accommodations have futon-style bedding and traditional rooms, so they may not be your accommodation for the entire trip, but staying for a night or two is a great option and a unique way to experience Korean tradition.

Getting Around In South Korea  

Once you have decided on your general travel plans and which cities you will be visiting, it’s time to look into how you will get around in South Korea.

This includes both between cities and inside the city.

We have three main means of transport. 

Driving is a great way to travel between cities and visit the regions that aren’t serviced by the railway.

It also provides the opportunity to plan your own journey, meaning you can make stops that wouldn’t be possible when traveling by train or public transport.

There are many rental car companies operating in South Korea and it is easy to rent a car from the airport.

However, driving isn’t really necessary or even very convenient while inside the big cities so if you are staying in Seoul before moving on, you may want to wait before renting a car.

Train  

Korea has a rail network connecting many of the major metropolitan cities.

There are a number of trains available, including a high-speed bullet train, known as the KTX lines. The trains are reliable and easy to use.

This can be a great way to get between major cities quickly.

The six largest cities in Korea also have a subway or metropolitan system, which is useful for moving around the city or visiting different areas within the same city.

Korail also offers a number of tourism rail passes to foreign visitors, including 3- and 5-day passes.

However, it is important to check the prices of individual tickets before buying a pass, as sometimes the pass doesn’t work out cheaper.  

Express Bus  

Buses offer another alternative mode of transport.

If you don’t like driving or just want to avoid driving in a foreign country, buses can be another road option.

They are slower than the train but cover more area and so might end up more interesting.

They also serve more cities along the way. An express bus tends to go straight from one city to another while an intercity bus will make stops at different cities along the way.

There are also many local buses for getting around the cities after you have arrived.

Organized Tours  

Planning a trip itinerary can be difficult and organized tours can simplify the process.

There are many different types of tours available and there is most likely one to suit you. Some tours are more guided while others plan the itinerary and provide minimal guidance to allow you more independence and options while on your trip.

Tours can have varying group sizes and be fast-paced or slow-moving.

There are also tours that are more focused on a certain type of traveler or interest, such as tours for young adults who want to experience a lot of nightlife, or tours more centered around the history and culture of an area.

There are many different tour options available in South Korea and we have curated some of the best options into our list here.  

3 months In Advance  

International drivers license  .

If you are planning on driving while in Korea you will need an IDP or International Drivers Permit.

This will give you permission to drive in Korea while holding an international driver’s license. Without an IDP or Korean driver’s license, there is no way for you to drive in Korea.

An IDP provides an official translation of your original driver’s license and can be provided by the official authority in your home country. You will need to show this when renting a car.  

Getting an IDP is a reasonably easy process and can help to provide a lot of freedom and flexibility in your travel planning and itinerary.  

Domestic Flights

Domestic flights aren’t necessary if you only visit the beautiful mainland of South Korea. However, if you also wish to go to the subtropical Jeju island you will need to fly. There’re multiple daily flights from Seoul and you should find reasonably priced flights if you book them 3 months out. Don’t wait too long if you’re traveling during the peak season.

If flights have become too expensive you can also take a ferry from Busan or some other places in the south of the country.

1 Month In Advance  

Staying online in south korea  .

Staying online can be a key aspect of travel in general, especially so when traveling in South Korea.

Having a reliable internet connection will allow you to use helpful tools like Google translate and navigation and map apps.

It will also help you find on-the-go recommendations, last-minute additions, up-to-date currency conversions, and more.

On top of that, many of us like to stay connected to friends and family while traveling, and reliable internet can be very helpful.  

Many places in Korea have free wi-fi available but it is always useful to have your own internet connection for the times when public wi-fi isn’t working or if you are in an area without public wi-fi.

There are a few main options available. One of the most convenient options is a pocket wi-fi or wi-fi egg as they are sometimes called.

This small device will provide a constant wi-fi connection Pocket wi-fi devices can be easily rented either in advance or at the airport.

These can then be returned by mail or to the same kiosk at the airport where it was rented.

There is a range of different plans available.

Pocket wi-fi is a convenient and easy-to-use option for the internet while in South Korea. To see more about pocket wi-fi in Korea, check out our post here.  

Another option is a travel sim. Many companies offer travel sims that can simply be swapped with your phone’s current sim.

You may also need to change some settings, but many travel sims will also provide you with a local phone number which may come in handy when making reservations that require contact details.

Transportation From The Airport 

There are a number of airports in South Korea that you may end up using and so it is necessary to be aware of the available transport to get to and from the airport.  

Seoul has two main airports – Gimpo and Incheon.

Gimpo is predominantly used for domestic flights and is located about 50 minutes from the city center.

Gimpo is connected via the subway and airport express.

Incheon is the much larger and more commonly-used airport and is where most international visitors will first land.

It is about 47km from Seoul station, in the center of Seoul, and is easily reached.

A’REX Airport Express

The A’REX airport express is the fastest and cheapest way to move from Incheon to Seoul station.

Limousine Bus

You can also take the limousine bus which will make various stops at different points in Seoul.

There are 4 lines that stop at various places in Seoul.

• 6701 Airport: Seoul City Hall
• 6702 Airport: Dongdaemun/Namsan
• 6703 Airport: Gangnam/COEX
• 6705 Airport: Jamsil/East Seoul Bus Terminal

The buses run from early in the morning until the evening.

Note that the schedule for all buses is different, so definitely check the bus hours before booking a ticket.

Private Transfer

However, it is also possible that you could be tired and overwhelmed and not keen on navigating public transport after a long international flight.

In this case, paying a bit more for a direct private transfer going straight from the airport to your hotel might be the answer.  

Busan  

If you are planning on flying to Busan, you will likely end up using Gimhae, Busan’s airport.

This airport is only about 11km from Busan station in the city center. If you take a taxi from the airport, it will only be about 15 minutes. However, the cheaper options are to take the subway or bus.

Unfortunately, these take a more roundabout route and take 53 minutes for the subway and 1hr for the bus.

The option you choose will really depend on your budget and how much time you are willing to spare.  

Jeju  

While in Korea you may be planning on visiting the beautiful island of Jeju.

This island is easily reached by plane with flights from Seoul and Busan only taking around 55 minutes.

A number of other regional airports also have flights available. In fact, Jeju airport is actually the second-largest airport in South Korea due to its popularity.

It is located around 3km from the city center and is very easy to reach by bus or taxi.

Both options take around 5 minutes, however, the taxi is more expensive.

If you are planning on booking activities, day tours, or other fun things to do in South Korea, there are a number of booking sites you can use to find the best activities and get the best deals.

GetYourGuide  

GetYourGuide is a great website with a wide range of activities and tours available.

They can be easily booked through the website and customer service is handled by GetYourGuide rather than directly with the operator.

The customer service is very professional and quick to respond to any issues.

Many of the activities on GetYourGuide can be canceled for free with 24 hours’ notice which leaves you with more flexibility while you’re actually on your trip.

Viator  

Viator is another company that works to connect travelers with tour and activity operators in the country.

It is owned by TripAdvisor and is considered reliable and consistent.

It often has more tours than Getyourguide listed, so if you can’t find the right activity for you on GetYourGuide, Viator might be the better option for you.

Klook  

Klook is a large Asian-based booking site with many activities and tours able to be booked in South Korea.

There are a number of activities that can’t be found on other sites and many of them come with great deals.

This makes Klook a great option when looking for a variety of activities, including some that aren’t obvious or as well-documented.

It can also be great for your budget.

It’s important to note that not all activities can be canceled for free on Klook so your itinerary needs to be fairly certain when booking through this site.

Fun Activities In South Korea  

There are a number of fun activities available in Korea that you may consider booking in advance.

This is especially relevant for the more limited or very popular activities which can book out weeks in advance.

To avoid disappointment, consider booking these in advance of your travel dates.  

The DMZ : Visit the border of South Korea and North Korea and see how the hangovers of the Cold War continue to affect Korea to this day.

Look across North Korea while learning about its history and current situation in Korea.  

Nami Island : A river island located near Seoul that is considered beautiful in every season. This island is a popular romantic destination and is well-known for its beautiful tree-lined paths and scenery.  

N Seoul Tower : Wander through the beautiful Namsan Park before climbing the hill to N Seoul Tower where you can quickly rise to 500m to see stunning panoramic views over Seoul.

This offers some of the best views in Seoul and is often considered a must-see when visiting Seoul.  

Nanta Show : Nanta is a unique, long-running form of musical comedy blending culinary skills, martial arts, acrobatics, and comedy.

It is also completely non-verbal. Spectators are encouraged to participate and the show provides a captivating 90 minutes of fun and entertainment.  

Huwon Secret Garden : The Secret Garden is a beautiful rear garden at Changdeokgung Palace. Extensive yet intimate, beautifully designed yet natural, the garden is picturesque and relaxing.

Visitors must join a tour and tour tickets book out fast so it is necessary to be fast when booking tickets to the Secret Garden (click on tour reservation at the top of the page).

Best Theme Parks In South Korea  

There are many amazing theme parks in South Korea and visiting one or more of them may be a fun activity while you are traveling.

Theme parks in Korea are often very extensive with many different things to do and enjoy.

They are designed and built with the aim of being the best theme park possible and often achieve this aim. Some of the top theme parks in South Korea include:  

Lotte World   

Lotte World Adventure is the world’s largest indoor amusement park with amazing rides and beautiful seasonal parades and performances.

The Garden Stage has regular performances changing with the season or relevant celebration (such as Christmas) and is well-loved by domestic and international tourists alike.

The Magic Island is the outdoor component of Lotte World and rivals Disney with its fairytale atmosphere.  

Since March 31, 2022, Lotte World also opened in Busan.

Everland  

Everland is one of Korea’s largest amusement parks and consists of five unique zones. These include Global Fair, Magic Land, American Adventure, Zootopia, and European Adventure.

Each zone is beautifully decorated and themed and can be very fun to visit. There are many rides at Everland, including the famous T-Express, Korea’s first wooden rollercoaster.

This is also one of the fastest rollercoasters in the world. There are also many themed exhibits and festivals depending on the season.

1 Week In Advance  

What to pack for your korea trip  .

Packing can be a difficult task, especially when there is always a niggling fear in the back of your mind that you’ve forgotten something.

Some of the most important categories to cover are your important documents and electronics.

Important Documents

This includes items like your passport, travel insurance policy, and various other travel documents.

It can also include hotel reservations, although these are likely electronic and you probably don’t need printouts of these.

Electronics

Electronics will include your phone, plans for how to stay online in Korea, and possibly a camera and chargers for everything.

Items like medication and a refillable water bottle are also necessary and should be at the top of your list.

Some medications are banned in South Korea so it may be necessary to check if any medication that you need is permitted.

The season in Korea will largely determine how you pack with winter requiring much warmer clothing and thick jackets while summer requires cool and breathable clothes.

It is important to remember that seasons like spring can get very cool at night so you will still need some warm clothing.

Taking an international trip can be an expensive venture and there are likely many places where you are willing to spend a bit more money for comfort and convenience.

There are also a number of ways you can save money and reduce your budget.

This can include things like transport.

While traveling within the city sticking to public transport such as subways and buses will help save a lot of money that might otherwise have been spent on taxis.

Free Entry To Attractions And Museums

Another good idea is to research which attractions, museums, and locations have free entry.

While you probably won’t want to limit yourself to these, including some can be a good way to save money.

You can also save money by eating and shopping where the locals do, rather than at more touristy places.

Sometimes places catered directly to tourists can have inflated prices while local restaurants and shops will have much cheaper options.  

Discover Seoul Pass

One of the best ways to save money while traveling in Seoul is with the Discover Seoul Pass.

This 1-3 day pass provides a range of benefits for a very reasonable price. The pass provides free entry to 35 different attractions and discounted entry at another 30.

This can add a lot to your list of places to visit for free or for a lower price. It also provides a free one-way Airport Express (A’REX) ride.

This can be very useful when coming from or returning to the airport after arrival or before departure.

Another useful function is the T-Money function. This will keep working after your pass expires and means you don’t have to spend extra money to buy a separate T-Money card.

This will work as a rechargeable public transport card and allow you to utilize the public transport system easily.

The Discover Seoul Pass can be bought online and picked up at the airport or at the Myeongdong Tourist Information Center.  

Note that the Discover Seoul Pass is not always available. If it isn’t, you can see if they have the BTS edition. It’s a 24hr edition of the Discover Seoul Pass without the T-money option. Instead, you get a Korea Tour T-money Card as a bonus. The BTS edition covers the same attractions as the regular Discover Seoul Pass.

Google Maps  

One unusual and sometimes confusing aspect of travel in South Korea is the lack of Google Maps information.

Many of us rely on Google Maps as our go-to when navigating an unfamiliar area, but in South Korea, Google Maps is rarely used.

It does exist and has some information but is rarely updated and can be very spotty, especially at a close-up level. It also isn’t very useful for driving or walking directions.

However, Korea has a number of local navigation apps that you can easily make use of.

These include Naver Maps, Korea Seoul Metro Navi, and Kakao Taxi.

Available on:  Google Play  –  Apple (This app is not getting much love for its Apple version.  We used the Android version which worked like a charm)

Korea Seoul Metro Navi will guide you quickly and efficiently through Seoul’s extended subway system.  The app calculates the fastest route to your destination.

If you plan on taking taxis, we recommend that you use the Kakao Taxi app.

Available on:  Google Play , – Apple

Travel Adapter  

Another important aspect to consider is travel adapters and plug types.

South Korea uses plug type F. This is used in a number of other countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and some European countries.

If you live in a country that uses a different plug type, you will need a plug adapter for travel in South Korea.

However, even if you live in a country that does use plug type F, it is important to also check the voltage to make sure it won’t affect your devices. South Korea has 220V and 60hz.

If your country operates on a different voltage, you may need a travel adapter that can also convert the voltage.

These are easily available from travel goods stores, as well as many electronics stores and department stores.

Not the most exciting app to download but crucial all the same, this is going to make your time in Seoul so much easier.

With a full, interactive map of Seoul’s ( Korea’s capital city ) absolutely sprawling subway system, Subway Korea tells you exactly which station you need to begin and end at, which stations to transfer at, and how long it’s going to take you from start to finish.

You can find this on the App Store for both Android and iPhone, and a companion app exists for Busan’s smaller (but still pretty big!) subway system.

When it comes to Korean, Google Translate can give you some hilariously bad translations and while that’s always entertaining, you’re going to need to be able to communicate with more than just hand gestures!

That’s why you need to download Papago . It serves many languages and its Korean translations are far better than Google’s, so this is going to make traveling to South Korea for the first time go much smoother.

You can get around places in Seoul with only English, but beyond that you’re going to need some help which makes Papago a must-download.

In my experience, Google Maps isn’t too helpful in Korea, and that’s why you’ve got to download Kakao Maps!

An app made by a Korean company, Kakao Maps is going to provide you with a level of detail, precision, and helpfulness that Google Maps simply can’t deliver.

Whether you’re exploring the city or out in Korea’s gorgeous countryside, this app is the best option for navigating the country.

2.      Learn Some Basic Korean Phrases

Having a solid translation app is all well and good, but it’s also important to memorize a few basic phrases in Korean just in case your phone doesn’t come through for you.

Anyeong Hasaeyeo – Hello

(You might have heard anyeong as meaning “hello” in Korean before and while that’s true, it’s important to say the full phrase because shortening it to anyeong can be seen as disrespectful.)

Kamsamnida – ­ Thank you

Kohn Bae! – Cheers!

Odi / Odi…? – where / where is…?

Hwajangshil – Bathroom

3. Explore the Dramatic East Coast

Staying in Seoul is great, but the country has SO much more to offer.

Korea’s east coast in particular flies far under the radar for most foreigners and isn’t visited nearly enough. But I can attest that it’s easily one of the most epic regions in Korea!

With tall, jagged peaks rising straight out of the sea, the east coast is the perfect place for travelers looking to escape Korea’s ultramodern cities and get out to explore the country’s natural wonders.

The east coast holds some of Korea’s best hiking spots, and Seoraksan National Park in particular is a favorite of mine, especially during winter and spring.

4. Korea is a Shopper’s Mecca

If you’re keen on shopping for the latest fashion or newest tech, South Korea is pretty much unbeatable.

Between Shinsegae, Lotte World, and a TON more, Korea has limitless options for shoppers of all stripes.

Shinsegae and Lotte are two absolutely massive department store chains in Korea that house countless stores within their walls, and there are so many more on top of those two to choose from and explore.

Your choices really are infinite.

The one thing you need to keep in mind though is that you should be prepared to spend.

Korea is not a cheap country in general, and that extends to its shopping scene. If you’re going to buy a higher-end item here, be ready to shell out a lot of cash.

5.      Avoid Drinking Tap Water

Sadly, Korea isn’t a place where you can drink the tap water worry-free. While many places in the countryside have springs with fresh water straight from the mountains, you will need to have a filtered water bottle for your trip!

6. Learn How to Get Around in South Korea

Nearly every corner of South Korea is connected by an intricate web of trains and buses that link large cities like Seoul and Busan in the south with the tiny villages and hamlets in the countryside.

Public transportation in Korea is fantastic: it’s reliable, clean, convenient, and always on time!

Even if you’re waiting at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere, if the schedule says a bus arrives at 8:30, it will be there at 8:30, give or take a few minutes.

On that note, if you’ve got a bus or train ticket departing at a certain time, make sure you’re there early because you will get left behind if you’re not there on time!

That brings me to one of the most important points of this piece: I highly recommend that you do NOT rent a car or motorbike in Korea if you’re considering it.

While the roads are modern, impressive feats of engineering, drivers here can often be very unpredictable and that can lead to some dangerous situations on the road if you’re not used to it.

A one-hour motorbike ride between two cities in Korea felt longer and scarier to me than a nine-hour ride on Pakistan’s Karakoram Highway, and anyone who’s made that trip can tell you how much that statement means!

It’s for that reason that I think you should avoid getting your own wheels in Korea, and that risk combined with the excellent public transportation system makes any rentals a needless expense.

When going between different cities, you can use Trip.com to book your train or bus tickets.

Remember to book in advance because if you show up and try to buy the ticket the day of your intended departure, there’s a good chance you’ll be out of luck.

Simple Seoul Travel Tips You Need to Know

Whether you’re traveling to South Korea for the first time or coming back for more, you’ll be spending a ton of time in Seoul so it’s good to know how to stay on top of things when exploring this behemoth of a city!

7. Invest in a Month-Long Tmoney Card

You’ll probably be using public transportation a lot, so it’s best to invest your money where it counts to get the most bang for your buck.

Bus and train fares in Korea are cheap anyway (about one dollar or less per ride), but the government just launched a new transit card option which allows passengers to spend $49 for a one-month pass and get unlimited access to Seoul’s huge network of trains and buses, as well as public bicycle rentals.

The card is rechargeable, so if you plan on staying in Korea for longer than a month, this is a great option to make your Seoul itinerary easier to execute.

You can get one at any major subway station, but sadly this card only covers public transportation in Seoul for now, so keep that in mind before buying.

If you’re just looking for a good old-fashioned Tmoney card without the month-long plan, you can get one at any convenience store or subway station and charge it with cash.

8. Make Reservations in Advance if Possible

When it comes to accommodations or more popular restaurants/cafés, it can be difficult in Seoul to simply show up to a place and expect to find an open spot, especially in high season.

This is a country where it’s best to make your reservations beforehand. If you don’t, there’s a very good chance that you’re going to miss out and get turned away.

9. Try Seoul’s amazing street food

Korean cuisine has plenty of tasty street snacks that are quick and cheap, making this one way to cut costs in Seoul! There’s no shortage of markets and stalls offering a quick bite, so be sure to check them out.

Kimbap and tteokbokki are two classic Korean eats that are cheap, delicious, and filling.

10. Understand Internet and Data in South Korea

Wifi is everywhere and internet speeds are lightning fast, but you’ll still want to stay connected when you’re on the move!

SIM cards and data plans tend to be pricy by Asian standards, and while you can get Korean e-SIMs at the airports, there’s a better option: a WiFi Egg rental.

You can check out a list of rental options here , and any of them will keep you connected to Korea’s ridiculously fast internet while you’re on the go without breaking the bank.

11. Korea Isn’t Cheap

Expenses in Korea aren’t quite as scary as Western Europe in summer but this isn’t Thailand either, so you need to be prepared to spend a little more.

Hostels will cost at least $15 USD/night but usually a bit more, and proper meals will start at around $8.

Public transportation is cheap, but going to a different city is going to cost a bit more: between $10-$50 depending on how far you’re going.

12. Bring Masks to Protect Yourself from Pollution

Korea and neighboring China are heavily dependent on coal for their energy needs, and as a result, the skies can occasionally have dangerous levels of smog, especially in big cities.

Masks are technically not an essential, but you’re going to want to have a few masks on hand to help you deal with this problem.

Just to give you an idea of how bad this can be sometimes: I’ve had an easier time breathing whilst hiking in difficult conditions at 5000m+ altitudes than I’ve had while just sitting outdoors at a café in Seoul trying to enjoy my coffee on a day when the pollution is at its worst.

13. Pay Attention to the Rules

Koreans are meticulous rule-followers, and it’s very important to keep this in mind when planning a trip to South Korea.

No matter how ridiculous a rule might seem to you, Koreans will obey it almost without exception. Even if it’s 3am and the roads are completely empty, a pedestrian is going to wait until the crosswalk turns green before they think about venturing out onto the empty road while the sign is red.

Many countries are really loose with the law but this is not one of them, so make sure that you’re completely respectful of the rules when you’re visiting South Korea.

A Few South Korea Cultural Travel Tips

Respecting Korean societal norms are SUPER important. Let’s get into a few of them…

14. Don’t tip

This might come as a huge relief to visitors, especially for Americans, but it’s important to know that tipping isn’t really a thing in Korea. Very rarely a place will ask for tips for its workers, but otherwise you should avoid tipping in all situations.

15. Politeness and respect are non-negotiable

Korean culture is deeply rooted in visibly showing respect for others, and it’s important to adopt that attitude while you’re visiting South Korea. Sass and sarcasm are looked down upon in nearly all situations so it’s best to avoid using those entirely.

16. Koreans tend to be reserved

While Koreans are very polite and hospitable, they are usually pretty reserved and it takes awhile for them to open up, so don’t worry if it seems like they’re not too friendly at first!

17.      Learn to Read Korean

Okay, I realize this might sound insane, but hear me out!

Hangul – the name for the Korean alphabet – is incredibly easy to learn how to read and will take you an hour or two max to get the basics down.

Just a bit of study goes a long way in helping you read signs and menus, making this a great return on investment for your time.

Even if learning languages isn’t your thing, I promise you that this is way easier than it sounds and strongly recommend giving it a try!

18. Understand When to Visit South Korea

Autumn and Spring are majestic.

Japan gets a lot of recognition for its stunning seasonal colors (and rightly so!) but these seasons in Korea are just as magical and can’t be missed.

It’s also way less crowded than Japan, and the colors you’ll see here are simply unreal.

These are not busy seasons in Korea as far as foreign tourism is concerned, so you’ll have a lot more space than you would in summer.

You’ll have to get out of the city to see these colors at their best, and Magoksa Temple is one of the most stunning locations in Korea during peak foliage!

Magoksa Temple is not too far from Seoul so it’s very accessible. If you’re in Korea during Autumn, this spot is a can’t-miss.

If you’re keen on visiting South Korea during Spring, you will see spellbinding cherry blossoms pretty much everywhere you go, but Seoraksan National Park on the east coast is one of the best spots in the country this time of year.

This one’s a bit further out of the way as it’s a 3-hour bus ride from Seoul, but it’s more than worth it! I’ve made the trip out to Seoraksan multiple times and it still isn’t enough.

Going to South Korea in summer is going to be a non-stop sweatfest and while winter can be utterly breathtaking, it’s freezing cold, so Autumn and Spring are the ideal seasons to visit Korea.

19. Seoul is a Foodie’s Paradise

Not only does Seoul have tons of excellent spots for trying Korean food, but the capital is also home to cuisines from all over the world! Italian, Japanese, Mexican, barbecue of all kinds, and so much more: you name it, Seoul has it.

While you could easily dedicate an entire book to Seoul’s many restaurants, here are a few highlights!

One of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve found anywhere in East Asia is Taco Amigo , located right in the heart of Itaewon.

Just up the road and right on Itaewon’s main street is Vatos , a Mexican fusion restaurant that has a seemingly infinite number of delicious meals to try out.

If you’re craving some classic Texas BBQ, Low and Slow Itaewon has got you covered.

The Royal Food and Drink is a cliffside restaurant with a stunning view of Seoul and serves a majestic brunch that will send you into a food coma.

Not only one of the best brunch places in Seoul but one of the best I’ve been to anywhere, meals here are unforgettable.

Whether you’re looking for izakayas, Levantine restaurants, kebabs, Mexican, or pretty much anything else: this city is a paradise of cosmopolitan cuisine, and taking advantage of that is a must.

Seoul does have unforgettable KBBQ restaurants and countless more excellent Korean restaurants, but the best (and cheapest) Korean food will be found beyond Seoul’s expansive boundaries!

20. Being Vegetarian or Vegan in Korea Isn’t Easy

As with a lot of Asian countries, it can be a challenge to navigate the food scene if you’re vegetarian or vegan. When visiting Busan , Seoul, Daegu, and other larger cities, many restaurants can cater to your diet but in the countryside, you’ll find that your options are much more limited.

Thankfully, Korean food does have some options for those of you who don’t eat meat!

Vegetarian mandu (dumplings), kimbap, and bibimbap are all tasty vegetarian dishes that you can’t miss out on, and jjajangmyeon is one of my personal favorites.

If you’re at a restaurant and ordering food that may or may not come with meat, like dumplings, just ask the waiter for “gogi opsoyo” (“no meat”) and you’ll be all set.

21. Explore Korea’s Amazing Café Scene

Going to South Korea means you get to explore a café scene which is second to none. A massively diverse range of cafés awaits travelers from the traditional to ultra-modern and quirky.

Seoul itself is home to countless unique, very photogenic cafés that you could probably spend a lifetime venturing through.

One of the capital’s most iconic spots is C.Through Café, which you’ll find here . Not only are the drinks delicious, but they also look so good that you almost feel bad for drinking them.

The coffee itself may or may not be what you’re looking for depending on your own personal tastes, but Korea’s cafés and teahouses are so diverse and incredible that I highly recommend you spend some time exploring what they have to offer!

22. Discover Korean Meals You Might Not Know Of!

Korean BBQ, samgyupsal, and kimchi are famous Korean culinary exports for good reason, but there are so many more Korean dishes that any backpacker worth their salt has got to try at least once.

Dakkalbi is a truly epic dish served in a massive pan that contains meat, rice cakes (called dak), vegetables, spices, and more depending on what you request. 

This is the perfect meal to have after you’ve worked up a huge appetite from exploring all day, and best to share with friends.

Quite possibly my favorite Korean meal is jjimdak. Often served in an enormous pan, this dish consisting at its core of chicken, glass noodles, rice, spices, and onions is a gluttonous, decadent meal that everyone should reward themselves with, and you can add more to the pan to mix things up a little.

Hint : add cheese.

23. Get Lost in Seoul’s Insane Nightlife

Seoul’s nightlife is famous and for very good reason: it’s amazing .

Coming out of a difficult few years due to the COVID pandemic, the capital’s bars and clubs are slowly returning to their former glory.

Gangnam, Itaewon, and Hongdae each have an endless supply of bars, restaurants, and clubs to explore that are wild fun, and a visit to Seoul is incomplete without at least a few sleepless nights spent in these districts.

You’ll also find unique escape rooms, board game cafés, and more.

It’s simply not possible to list all the things you can do in Seoul, which is exactly why you should get hopelessly lost in wandering through this amazing city’s nightlife.

24. Get Off the Beaten Path

South Korea is rightly well-known for being a haven of futuristic cities, shopping, and lightning-fast internet, but it’s so much more than that!

This is a country where ancient wonders mix with natural beauty in a way that doesn’t happen anywhere else, and one of the best tips for traveling to South Korea I can give you is to journey away from the typical tourist loop of Seoul, Busan, and Jeju.

That might seem like hard advice to follow in a tiny country that’s so modernized, but venture beyond the confines of the cities and you’ll find a side of Korea that most people don’t see.

Experiencing Korea’s ancient, rich culture and all the gems hiding in its many hills simply can’t be missed out on, and this is what makes going to South Korea an unforgettable experience, far more so than a night out in Seoul or Busan.

25. Know Which Places to Stay/Avoid

Korea has no shortage of great hostels to stay at that range from cozy and classy to social and wild, but here are just a few to keep in mind:

If you’re looking for a good time in Seoul that doesn’t involve much sleeping, The Time Traveler’s Party Hostel in Hongdae is hard to beat. Fun and social with a downstairs bar and a crew that goes out into Hongdae’s vibrant nightlife every night, this is the place to be for all kinds of partiers.

Its sister hostel, Time Travelers’ Relax Guesthouse , is for backpackers looking for something more low-key and restful. Also in Hongdae, this hostel is in a quiet neighborhood that’s just a short distance from the district’s unbelievable nightlife scene, so it gives you the best of both worlds.

Seoul Cube Itaewon is also an incredible hostel with a great reputation, and its location right in the center of Itaewon is basically unbeatable!

When it comes to Seoul – and Korea in general – pretty much any hostel or guesthouse you choose is going to be solid with one exception: the Hongdae Bird’s Nest Hostel. This is the one place I recommend you absolutely avoid at all costs unless you have no other choice.

You might be tempted by its low prices and convenient location (I was!), but the facilities are less than ideal and the management is strange, unhelpful, and at times very unfriendly to guests. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Girl, 8, Is Sole Survivor of Bus Plunge: ‘No One Can Explain This Miracle’

Forty-five church pilgrims from Botswana, along with the driver, were killed when the bus plunged off an overpass into a rocky ravine in South Africa. The only survivor was a little girl.

Lauryn Siako is the rare 8-year-old who springs out of bed to get herself ready for church, her family said. She loves the singing, the dancing, the worshiping.

So when leaders of her church announced that they were resuming the enormous annual Easter pilgrimage to church headquarters in South Africa this year, after a four-year hiatus for Covid-19, Lauryn pleaded with her mother to let her go for the first time.

Lauryn and her grandmother boarded a bus in their home village of Molepolole, Botswana, on Wednesday night with 43 fellow members of the St. Engenas Zion Christian Church, excited for the experience of a lifetime.

But by the following morning, Lauryn was the only one of the 45 passengers still alive.

The driver lost control of the bus on a sharp turn, and it careened off a high overpass on Mmamatlakala Mountain in northeastern South Africa, plunging 165 feet into a rocky ravine and bursting into flames. The driver and all of his passengers perished, except, inexplicably, the stringy girl who had just received her passport a week before the trip and had guarded it closely. She escaped with minor lacerations, South African health officials said.

“How did she come out of that bus?” Lauryn’s tearful mother, Gaolebale Siako, said on Friday, sitting in the modest home where Lauryn had lived with her grandmother in Molepolole, repeating a question she has been asking herself over and over.

“It’s hard to explain,” she added. “I’m hurt that I lost my mom and other people, but I’m also comforted knowing that my child is alive.”

As investigators continued searching for remains and answers as to what happened on Friday, church members questioned how the bus ended up on a treacherous, winding mountain road that they had never taken before in many journeys to the church headquarters in Moria, South Africa.

Kabelo Joseph Selome, a local ward councilor and a cousin of Lauryn’s mother, said in an interview in Botswana that the bus had been following two cars carrying church elders. But when the cars took a turn, the bus failed to follow — suggesting that the bus driver was lost, said Mr. Selome, who had spoken with the elders.

The police were investigating the crash as a case of culpable homicide, according to a statement, though they did not provide further details.

Emergency responders found Lauryn outside the bus with minor lacerations to her arms, legs, head and back, said Thilivhali Muavha, a spokesman for the chief health official in Limpopo Province, where the crash occurred. She was in stable condition on Friday, Mr. Muavha said.

Mr. Muavha said the authorities had not yet determined how the girl was able to survive such a devastating crash.

“All we can say is that we are happy that she was found alive,” he said.

The family has been speculating about how Lauryn survived, said Ms. Siako, 38. They wonder whether Lauryn’s grandmother, Onkemetse Siako, 61, threw her out of the window before the crash.

“No one can explain this miracle,” said Mr. Selome, the cousin.

The family learned at a briefing with police officials from Botswana on Friday, Mr. Selome said, that Lauryn had provided a lot of information to the South African authorities. She told them where the bus was coming from and where it was going, and even gave them her mother’s phone number.

The family now wonders whether God saved the young girl so that she could assist the authorities.

Lauryn was her grandmother’s favorite because she was so obedient, relatives said. The two lived together while Lauryn’s mother was away working, and they were inseparable. She got her cooking skills and independent mind from her grandmother, they said. She would wash and iron her own clothes and cook for the family — she baked bread the morning of the trip.

Lauryn was ranked second in her class, relatives said. She wanted to perform in a beauty pageant at school, but she was not picked because she walked too slowly and with her shoulders slumped, said her mother, who works as a safety and health official at a construction site.

Her mother told her to prepare not to sleep much at the Easter gathering. The praying, singing, dancing and prophesying happens on a field at night, and the energy is so high that the congregants rarely go to bed.

Ms. Siako said there was always a lot of excitement in simply traveling to the Easter gathering, which attracts millions of worshipers, and in seeing all the buses gathered at Moria.

The Zion Christian Church split into two branches in the middle of the 20th century after a dispute between the founder’s sons. Members of the St. Engenas branch wear a badge with a dove, while the other, larger branch, simply called the Zion Christian Church, wear a star. Their beliefs are virtually the same, said Joel Cabrita, a history professor at Stanford University in California, who has written a book about the church. They belong to a broader Zionist Christian movement in Africa that counts around 15 million members, the largest denomination in southern Africa.

While the St. Engenas branch decided to restart its pilgrimage this year, the other branch still has not.

The South African police confirmed on Friday that the passengers on the bus, along with the driver, were citizens of Botswana making the journey from Molepolole, a village that is considered the gateway to the vast Kalahari Desert.

As of Friday afternoon, 34 bodies had been recovered, the police said. Only nine of them were identifiable, with the others burned beyond recognition.

The tragedy cast a cloud over Botswana, a heavily Christian nation of about 2.5 million that was preparing to celebrate the Easter weekend.

Ms. Siako and other relatives said they worried about how this tragedy would affect Lauryn’s mental state. It is unclear when family members might be able to travel to South Africa to visit her in the hospital, or when she will be able to return home.

“I cry a lot,” Ms. Siako said. “I’m just worried, how is she right now?”

She said she pictured her daughter alone at the bottom of the ravine after the crash, and wondered whether she was scared and crying. “I’m asking myself,” she said, “did she even see what really happened?”

Ultimately, though, the miracle of Lauryn’s survival might be all this devastated community has to help it heal right now.

“This girl, just her being alive, is comforting the whole family,” Mr. Selome said. “This girl is giving us strength.”

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface. 

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

2024 Korea-Africa Summit and Korea-Tanzania relations

South Korean companies are expanding their partnership in Tanzania’s major infrastructure and transportation projects to assist Tanzania unlock its development potentials.

It is not long ago that South Korea (Republic of Korea) and Tanzania have become close friends to each other.

It was the year of 1961 when South Korea established its diplomatic relations with African nations for the first time, while South Korea and Tanzania established the diplomatic relations on April 30, 1992.

Since then, our two countries have steadily developed strong cooperation, and this relationship, grounded in mutual respect and shared values, has undergone significant evolution.

Tanzania-Korea friendship flourishes

Tanzania, South Korea startups ink partnership deal

In order to pave a solid way for even greater partnership, Korea is hosting ‘2024 Korea-Africa Summit’ from June 4 to 5 with the main theme of ‘The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity.’

The Summit signifies our commitment to stronger partnership that transcends boundaries, ushering in an era of heightened collaboration and shared success.

South Korea is dedicated to building a mutually beneficial, long-term and sustainable partnership with Africa, as the continent is aiming at the African Union (AU)’s “Agenda 2063.”

It is noteworthy that this Summit comes at an exciting time in our bilateral relations, as South Korea and Tanzania are forging ever stronger ties in the field of development, economic cooperation, and trade and investment.

For the Standard Gauge Railway project, Korea’s ultra-modern electric locomotives and passenger coaches have already arrived in Dar es Salaam, and they are successfully running on their trial journeys.

Along the Coco Beach coastline, there is the wonderful Tanzanite Bridge, designed and built by Korean companies with highest safety standards.

In Zanzibar, Korean company has completed the Mater Plan for MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibition) project, which will lead to blooming of Zanzibar’s MICE industry.

Also, in the field of development cooperation, both countries are closely working together for realizing Tanzania’s Vision 2025. Korea’s ODA organizations – for example, Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) - are partnering with Tanzania in the areas including agriculture, health, infrastructure, administration, education, and vocation training.

Building on such partnership, the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit will drive Korea and Tanzania towards even closer cooperation. In particular, as Korea’s Ambassador, I truly wish that the historical meeting will take place in Seoul between the two leaders, H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan and H.E. President Yoon Suk Yeol, which will become a milestone for our bilateral relations.

Acknowledging our shared visions, and capitalizing on our respective strengths, we will be able to unlock greater opportunities for shared prosperity.

Most of all, Tanzania has its unique position as a leader in East Africa, abundant with human capitals and natural resources such as critical minerals.

During the Korea-Africa Summit, Korea looks forward to forging stronger partnership in terms of addressing global challenges as well as strengthening global mineral supply chain, expanding blue economy, and enhancing ICT cooperation to name a few.

Needless to say, the Summit will also lay the foundation for increased business and investment opportunities between our two countries. Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) is actively seeking companies and investors who are ready to venture into new business partnership.

Increased trade volume of high quality products between our two countries will benefit both of us, bringing about shared prosperity. Furthermore, I firmly believe that the upcoming Summit will be an opportunity to celebrate our long-term friendship for generations to come by boosting people-to-people, cultural and academic exchanges. We have about two months to go before the Summit, and we will soon observe our bilateral relations evolve to another level.
