So, consider renting a car to visit the cities of Seville , Cordoba , Granada , Cadiz , and the surrounding area to discover the local culture!

16. Italy 

To visit historic cities such as Bologna, Venice , Florence, Rome or Siena, I highly recommend leaving during the spring.

In addition to enjoying an excellent climate, you won’t be bothered by the tourist crowds. If you love mountain scenery, you want to go to the Dolomites in Italy!

During this time of the year, the weather is really favorable in many parts of the United States. This is a great time to spend a nice vacation in the West, going to New York , Los Angeles , or Miami .

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth and it’s not hard to see why. This vast, geologically rich landscape is a sight to behold and definitely worth adding to your travel bucket list.

New York City is the world’s most-visited city. There are so many amazing things to love about NYC from visiting Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, to taking in the panoramic view from The Empire State Building. 

But this is one city where it’s not all about “the sights” – I think New York City should be high up on anyone’s travel bucket list because it has so much to offer. The best food you can ever eat, plenty of culture and entertainment, great shopping… the list goes on.

The best time to visit New York City is during the summer months when the weather is warm and pleasant. Of course, this is also the busiest time of year, so be prepared for crowds. But I think it’s worth it to experience everything that this amazing city has to offer.

Highlights: Lake Louise, Columbia Icefields & Banff town

Lake Louise is probably one of the most photographed areas in Canada. It’s also a great place for skiing during winter. Although it can get pretty cold here, winters are still so much fun as it gets fewer crowds than summer months. 

Lake Louise is located inside the Banff National Park, which is one of Canada’s oldest national parks and it’s located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This area is popular for skiing, hiking, camping, and fishing. You can also explore the Columbia Icefields, which is the largest icefield in the Rocky Mountains.

Visiting Banff National Park in winter also gives you an opportunity to chase northern lights in places like the Vermillion Lakes, close to the townsite.

Best Beaches in Kotor Montenegro 

The hidden treasures of the Adriatic are poised for exploration, offering unforgettable seaside moments. From the easily accessible Kotor Beach, lying at the base of ancient fortifications, to the secluded allure of Bajova Kula, each spot offers its own piece of paradise.

Whether planning a solo escape, a romantic excursion, or a family holiday, Kotor’s beaches cater to all occasions, ensuring lasting memories. 

1. Kotor Beach

A stone’s throw from the Old Town, Kotor Beach is a convenient and lively stretch perfect for those who love to be in the heart of the action. It is convenient for visitors who want to combine historical tours with seaside relaxation. 

While not the largest of beaches, its proximity to the city centre makes it particularly accessible. 

The beach is quite pebbly, and because of its size it tends to be very crowded by noon. I recommend getting there early (between 8 to 10 am), grab a sun lounger (paid) and enjoy a full day there.

If you are sightseeing in the Old Town, and then heading there in the late afternoon or evening I recommend just taking a walk and enjoying the scenery as finding a place to sit down will be a little difficult. 

There are not a lot of food options on the beach (but a 5 minute walk from the beach will welcome you to many options).

Highlights:

• Accessibility : Just minutes from the city centre.
• Amenities : A mix of free and paid amenities are available, including sunbeds and umbrellas.
• Vibe : Busy and vibrant, surrounded by bars and restaurants.

2. Bajova Kula Beach

Named after the legendary hero Bajo Pivljanin, Bajova Kula Beach prides itself on its clear waters and small, secluded bay. It’s ideal for those seeking tranquillity away from the centre.

To get to the beach, you have to drive for 20 minutes as public transport is infrequent. Plus getting there early will be a bonus as you can enjoy the peaceful view of the bay, and soak in the sun. 

If you are not driving, consider taking a cab, this will also be convenient as sometimes parking can be an issue when visiting during the peak hours of the day. 

You can swim at the Bajova Kula Beach, and there is also a beach bar on-site. You can pay for sun beds. 

Be careful when you stroll on the beach as it is quite pebbly and glass pieces are often seen on the shore. 

All in all I recommend visiting the beach for its epic views of the Kotor Bay, and its vibe. 

• Distance : Roughly 20 minutes’ drive from Kotor.
• Amenities : Enjoy the luxury of a private beach feel with rentable cabanas (morning hours).
• Ambiance : Calm and peaceful, perfect for pure relaxation (morning hours).

3. Plavi Horizonti Beach

Or as the locals call it, ‘Blue Horizons’ is a beach experience not to be missed. 

The fine sandy beach gradually slopes into shallow waters, making it ideal for families with their playful toddlers. It’s one of the most sublime places to witness the horizons, as the name suggests, and lose yourself in the magnificent sunsets.

You can swim, or rent sun loungers. To keep everyone busy and entertained you will find a variety of activities from beach volleyball, tennis, and basketball to building sand castles and hanging out in their restaurant. 

The beach is best visited in June and September. And it holds the coveted Blue Flag recognition for excellence in environmental management and water quality.

• Distance : Roughly 20 minutes’ drive from Kotor Old town (near Tivat Airport)
• Amenities : Beautiful and smooth, perfect for children and families. Good restaurant and parking available on site.
• Ambiance : Coastal charmer with cliffs and trees and endless sea views. 

4. Verige Beach

Verige Beach is a hidden gem located about 25 minutes drive from Kotor. Tucked away in the narrowest part of the Bay of Kotor, this enchanting wild beach is easily accessible via the Kotor Bay Ferry.

The beach has fine pebbles, and its crystal-clear waters are breathtaking. Enhancing its beauty, the quaint Church of Our Lady of Angels stands nearby, offering breathtaking views over the bay, Perast, and Our Lady of the Rocks. 

The sight of the church, with the scenic backdrop, is utterly captivating!

I like Verige Beach more for sightseeing, including capturing the sights of the boats docking or going up and down the waters. 

The waters are also frequented by mega yachts and elegant sailing boats, adding to the beach’s allure.

If you wish to hang out and soak in the sun, you can rent sun loungers nearby or sit down to eat at the restaurant onsite.

• Distance : About 25 minutes’ drive away from Kotor town.
• Aim : Ideal for those looking to escape the busyness for a day.
• Convenience : Limited amenities, but sun loungers are available for rent. 

5. Morinj Beach

Situated a mere 30-minute drive from Kotor, it may require a bit more travel, but its appeal is undeniable. 

Unlike the typically smaller beaches of Kotor, Morinj Beach stands out with its expansive sandy shores, a rare find in the bay area. 

It offers a gentle entry into the water, without the abrupt deepening found at many other local beaches, making it an ideal choice for families.

However, keep in mind that the waters of the Morinj Beach are a little bit cooler which is perfect for hot summer days as the waters can provide a refreshing respite on sweltering days.

Access to Morinj Beach is straightforward and free. You can rent a car and drive there. For convenience, there is a large parking lot located across the street, available for a nominal fee of €2.

• Distance : About 30 minutes’ drive north from Kotor.
• Amenities : Mostly free beach with some paid options for extra comfort.
• Features : Great for children and families.

6. Zanjice Beach

Tucked on the Lustica Peninsula, Zanjice Beach lures visitors with pebbly shores and clear blue waters. It’s a bit further out but worth the trek for its serene atmosphere.

The beach is only accessible during the peak season, and you can also book tours to get there from Kotor, or Budva. 

The beach is great for views, and the Blue Cave. 

Free entry to the beach, and in terms of amenities you can rent sunbeds, umbrellas, and access toilets and showers.

• Distance : Approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Kotor. Or you can come by boat (20 minutes)
• Amenities : Paid sunbeds, with some free areas to lay your towel.
• Surroundings : A quieter choice surrounded by nature.

7. Risan Beach

Want to escape the crowds? Then make your way to Risan Bay. Here, you can enjoy the offbeat shores of Bolnička Plaža, characterised by the authentic stones and rocks of Kotor Bay. 

The beach lacks the amenities that you would expect from a well-developed beach area, but it’s untamed, rugged beauty is its charm. 

Beyond its picturesque scenery, Risan Beach is steeped in history, standing as one of the bay’s most ancient settlements. 

Just a short stroll from the shore, visitors can discover Roman mosaics, adding a layer of cultural enrichment to the beach’s natural allure. 

The view of the 7th-century Banja Monastery, framed by towering cypress trees, is undeniably charming.

• Proximity : Approximately a 20-minute drive from Kotor.
• Cultural significance : Offers a touch of history with nearby ancient ruins.
• Amenities : Basic amenities are available, with a focus on the natural environment.

8. Kotor Natural Beach

Kotor Natural Beach is an undiscovered treasure for those in search of a completely free seaside retreat.

Nestled on the side opposite Kotor Beach, it presents a more untouched and rugged seaside experience compared to its counterpart. Here, you won’t find the sun loungers and manicured shores common to other Kotor vicinity beaches.

Given the pebbly and rocky terrain of this wild beach, I recommend bringing aqua shoes. 

Swimming is allowed and is okay here. 

Near the beach, you will find the ruins of the Fjord Hotel, and there are two small cafes. 

• Distance : a short walk from the Old Town to the beach. Parking is available nearby 
• Activities : Sunbathing, swimming 
• Facilities : Cafes near/on the beach

9. Jaz Beach

One of the longest beaches in the Bay of Kotor, Jaz Beach is famous not only for its beauty but also as a venue for top-notch music festivals. Its vivacious atmosphere, coupled with excellent facilities, makes it a hit for those who enjoy the livelier side of seaside leisure.

You can rent sun loungers, and umbrellas and when driving there you will be delighted to know that there is a large parking space (and it is FREE!).

• Distance :  Located approximately 20 minutes from the city centre (Budva municipality).
• Activities : Water sports, and live music events are just some of the activities on offer.
• Facilities : Sunbeds, cafes, and umbrellas are available.

10. Oblatno Beach

​​Oblatno Beach, located just a 20-minute drive from Kotor, is the epitome of a chic beach getaway. 

For an epic day out at a cool beach club, Oblatno is amazing – it is similar to Plavi Horizonti Beach, where the waters are sandy and fine. 

The beach is great for families where you can enjoy beachside games.

The beach is free to access, but there is an area under the Almara Beach Club – where you will have to pay to access. This is where you will also find sun loungers for rent. 

Other than the beach amenities you can also enjoy cocktails and light snacks all whilst soaking the views of the Adriatic Sea.

A note about the Almara Beach Club – this is a full service restaurant serving fresh and delicious seafood (including paella). 

• Distance : A 20-minute drive from Kotor
• Amenities : Sun loungers, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, and restaurant/bar services.
• Vibe : A trendy and upscale beach club atmosphere with live music events during peak season.

11. Pirate Beach

Pirate Beach offers a blend of fun and relaxation where children can play to their heart’s content, making it a favourite among visiting families. This beach is located in Perast and is about a 20 minute drive.

Pirate Beach boasts a contemporary ambiance, and is perfect for a day out of Kotor. The beach features imported gravel, and for relaxation, you can rent a pair of sun loungers, complete with an umbrella, at €20, providing the perfect setup to enjoy cocktails with a view. 

What’s more the stunning backdrop of Perast with the Our Lady of the Rocks, and Sveti Đorđe, is hard to beat, and a must see in Montenegro. 

• Distance : A 20-minute drive from Kotor. 
• Amenities : Sun loungers, umbrellas, Kid-friendly with shallow areas and play zones.
• Vibe : Amazing views, and the sun and sea!

Kotor’s Beach Experience

In Kotor, you will find amazing beaches. There are private and public beach areas and it caters to every luxury level (you can explore and sunbathe for free, or spend a little extra for a luxury experience). 

The pebbly shores and crystal-clear waters are a common feature, inviting both locals and visitors to bask in the natural beauty of Montenegro’s coastline.

Public Beaches

Public beaches in Kotor are where the vibrant pulse of the city meets tranquil turquoise waters. These stretches are open to everyone, often characterised by stones or pebbles, and provide a serene setting for swimming and sunbathing. 

Best of all, there’s no entrance fee to enjoy the simple pleasure of a day at the beach here.

Travel Goals: How to Envision and Achieve Your Travel Dreams

Have you ever noticed how two people can visit the same place with similar hopes and dreams have dramatically different experiences?

One person will return home with life-changing memories of adventure and reflection, whereas another will return home disappointed, feeling as though they'd failed to accomplish what they set out to achieve.

Why is this?

While nothing is guaranteed on the road, travelers who consistently have exceptional experiences share a common trait: they set travel goals. 

Setting travel goals to improve your next trip might seem counterintuitive to some. After all , isn't the objective of travel to get away from the to-do lists and schedules of daily life?

Yes, and no. Although travel is a great opportunity to escape from our day-to-day routines, it's not an alternative universe within which the general rules of life don't apply.

Just as they do at home, when traveling goals provide you with short-term motivation and long-term vision. They help you to better organize your time and energy so that you get the most out of your trips.

Goals ensure that you’re life on the road follows your own personal values. And by setting and completing goals, you take the steps necessary to fulfill your purpose, or Why, for traveling.

Without goals, it’s easy to get lost. With no clear direction on what to do next or which way to go, we can become overwhelmed with the number of novel possibilities travel presents us with on a daily basis.

Having good travel goals is like having someone guide you along your journey, ensuring you take the proper next step every time.

Fortunately, as you will see, creating—and accomplishing—major, life-changing travel goals isn’t just for the hyper-motivated or über-persistent. There are a number of straight-forward steps that anyone eager to learn and grow can follow to design and fulfill their travel dreams.

How To Create Amazingly-Effective Travel Goals

OK, so you’re convinced that setting goals is useful. But how do you go about doing this? How do you create good travel goals?

The best, most-effective travel goals are SMART goals. No, I don’t mean that they are members off MENSA (what’s with the acronyms today?).

Rather, great travel goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. Let’s explain that a bit more.

Great travel goals are clear and specific, which helps to remain focused and motivated.

To make your goals more specific, try and answer the six ‘W’ questions:

-What do I want to accomplish?

-When do I want to accomplish this goal?

-Where do I need to go?

-Who should be involved?

-Which resources or limits are there?

-Why do I want to accomplish this goal?

Great travel goals are also measurable, allowing you to easily track your progress and know when you’ve succeeded.

Being able to clearly see both how far you’ve come and what you need to do to finish helps you to stay motivated and creates excitement around the thought of accomplishing your goal.

When setting measurable goals, ask questions like:

-How will I know when I've succeeded?

A good measurable travel goal for someone shy would be to have a 5+ minute conversation with a local 3x over the course of one, week-long trip. A less-effective goal would be to "meet new people" or "open up".

Great travel goals should also be attainable. You should be able to see a realistic path you can take to success. You should feel challenged and your abilities should be stretched, but everything should remain possible.   If your goals is so difficult that it starts to feel unattainable, then you’re more likely to just give up.

Achievable goals answer questions like:

-Given my current situation (financial, mental/physical health, time constraints) how realistic is this goal?

-How can I accomplish this goal?

Great travel goals need to be relevant. They need to matter to you, aligning with your greater purpose in travel or life.

Having a deep sense of purpose behind your goals ensures that you’ll never run out of motivation, even when the going gets tough and helps to keep things in perspective. If you goal isn’t relevant to you, you will lack the fortitude necessary to handle adversity when it undoubtedly appears.

Relevant travel goals answer ‘yes’ to these questions:

-Is this something that matters to me?

-Do I really want to accomplish this?

-Will completing this goal improve the world in some way?

-Am I improving my life by succeeding?

-Is this the right time or place for me to try and achieve this goal?

Great travel goals have a target date. They have a deadline for completion that you can stick to. This helps ensure that one temporary, short-term goal—which is supposed to be a single step on the way towards aiding greater goals or your purpose—doesn’t become a massive time-suck or permanent hinderance.

Time-based travel goals can usually answer these questions:

-What can be done today to help accomplish this?

-What can I do six weeks from now?

-What can I do six months from now?

A good time-bound travel goal for someone afraid of flying would be to take one flight without the aid of anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping pills, or alcohol in the next 3 months.

In addition, the best travel goals are performance, not outcome, based. This means that the goal is to complete the process rather than to achieve a specific end result.

As all great performers know, the only thing you ever have full control over is your effort. There’s no guarantee that a well-struck golf ball won’t end up in the water in a tournament or that a perfectly-sung ballad won’t be eclipsed by another song during a talent show.

You can’t force the weather to be nice, a museum to be open, or a local to be friendly, but you can wake up in the morning ready to take that hike, prepare yourself to see some art, or have the courage to start a conversation at the nearby cafe.

You can't control whether or not the ticket office is open while traveling through Italy—it rarely seems to be—but you can make sure you're at the train station on time.

While there are no guarantees, consistently putting in the effort—following a process that you know can work—leads to the best long-term results.

How To Figure Out What Goals to Set

If you’ve read what we wrote on travel with purpose , you know how important it is to find your Why for travel. Purpose gives focus to your planning, inspires action on the road, and provides strength in difficult moments—both before and during trips.

Once you’ve identified your purpose for travel— here’s a refresher on how to do that —you’ve already done much of the work necessary to set great travel goals. You have a clear idea of which direction you want to take. Now you just have to map out the specific steps you will take to get there.

Once you know what your final destination is, it becomes much easier to determine what path you want to take to get there.

Sometimes the route you need to take will be obvious, and goal-setting will be simple. Other times the path might not be as clear. If that’s the case, ask yourself the following questions, with your Why in mind:

-Image that you’ve had a successful trip filled with purpose. What would that trip entail? Can you work backwards from the end to the start?

-What’s the smallest possible first step you could take towards achieving your Why?

-Has anyone else traveled with a similar purpose? What did their journey look like?

-What’s the most important problem you could tackle on day one of your trip?

-What’s one thing that would get you to jump out of bed?

-What do you want your obituary to say?

-What would you never regret trying even if you failed?

-What could you do to ensure that you’re living a satisfying life?

Choosing between paths is often part of the fun of travel planning and goal setting.

Not every goal for your trip has to—or even should—be purpose-driven. Adding a few for-fun, less-serious goals helps to lighten the mood and provides additional motivation along the way.

Examples of some fun goals could be visiting all the Trappist breweries in Belgium, learning 5 words in Portuguese each day during a month-long trip to Brazil, and trying 20 different flavors of Kit Kat while in Japan.

Deciding How Many Travel Goals to Have

When trying to determine how many goals you should set for a trip, there are a number of factors to consider.

How long will you be gone? How much time will you be able to devote to accomplishing your goals? Will you have other obligations or responsibilities on your trip? Does reading over your list of potential goals make you feel overwhelmed?

It can be helpful to think of travel goals as items in your mental backpack. Pack too few and you'll be ill-prepared. Pack too many and you'll be overly burdened.

In general, it is better to pick a smaller number of meaningful goals rather than a large number of goals that you’re less enthusiastic about. Your time and energy on the road is limited, and there is only so much you can concentrate on.

Changing Your Travel Goals

Having fewer goals allows you to create new goals when you’re traveling based on what you see and do. As you travel, you will undoubtedly realize new things about yourself and your prioritizes might change. Perhaps you came to South America to learn Brazilian Capoeira only to learn that you’d rather practice Argentine Tango.

Your goals don’t have to be inflexible. Sometimes unexpected things happen when you’re traveling. Allow yourself the latitude to jump into the adventure that is unexpected possibilities. Don’t let your original goal of visiting the top 5 Sachertorte coffee houses in Vienna keep you from accepting an invite from new friends to spend the weekend at a music festival in Bratislava. The best part of travel is the unexpected and the unplanned, and objectives should never get in the way of a good story.

Expectations Versus Hopes

To help make this easier, make sure your goals are not expectations. Expectations are absolute and unmovable. When we expect something, we move an accomplishment from being something to be celebrated to being something mundane. After all, we expected it to happen so why be happy? And if they don’t happen, then we get upset.

In contrast, if you view your goals as hopes—things you want to have happen but also recognize that they might not—then you are free to change or abandon goals when necessary. The quality of your travel experiences are not contingent upon how many of the goals you set out at the beginning are accomplished blindly.

Don't underestimate the benefits of having the freedom to explore with hope.

How to Achieve Your Travel Goals

There are a number of things you can do to help you to accomplish your travel goals.

1.) Make sure your travel goals are SMART

As mentioned above, if your goals are not specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, or time-bound, your chances of success will be greatly diminished.

2.) Review your travel goals regularly

Review your goals every day when you wake up. One way to do this is to create a travel journal within which you actually one big goal for the day and three ways in which you are going to make it happen.

Also remind yourself everyday of your overall purpose for traveling. Write this down on a piece of paper and bring it with you during the day.

3.) Prioritize your travel goals

At the beginning of your trip, sequence your goals based on priority. Know what is most important to get done first and what you most want to accomplish. Not only does this set you off on the right foot, but it makes it more likely that you will have done the things you most want to do in case something happens that cuts your trip short or otherwise changes your plans.

4.) Keep track of your progress

Before you go to bed each night take a moment to write down your successes. Note what steps you took to achieve your goals and how much progress you’ve made since yesterday.

Somedays you’ll take great leaps, whereas others days it may feel like you’ve only advanced a little. Don’t worry about this. Remain consistent in the process and the results will eventually show.

5.) Celebrate your success

Be sure to enjoy the moment when you accomplish your goals. Fully embrace the feelings you get and let them soak into you. Hold onto that feeling as long as you can. Think about the hard work and dedication it took to get to where you are.

Take a photo to memorialize your accomplishment and let other people know on social media what you’ve done. Don’t worry about coming across as boastful—in general, people want other people to succeed, and if your joy is genuine your friends and family will be supportive. And who knows, you may even inspire someone else to take on their own challenges.

The joy one gains from a hard-earned achievement is addictive, and you’ll naturally want more of it. Ensuring that you take the time to properly celebrate your successes is critical when building the work-reward loop that drives future performance.

6.) Reflect

Throughout the goal-achievement process, remain reflective. Ask yourself how things are going? Are your goals too easy and you’re not feeling challenged? What are you learning about yourself? Use this information to adjust your future plans and goals.

Things to Avoid: What Prevents You From Achieving Your Travel Goals

Don't let your next trip be filled with regret and disappointment due to unmet travel goals.

There are a number of reasons people don’t achieve their travel goals. Some of the biggest road blocks include:

1.) Impatience

You want results right away and get frustrated and quit when you don’t see the results immediately.

2.) Perfectionism

You want everything to be done perfectly the first time and if that’s not the case you get upset and quit.

3.) Failure

You are unable to deal with failure on a first, second, or tenth try. Those who stick with it are those that achieve. 

Even the best fail sometimes.

4.) Focusing on the end results

When you shift your attention from the process to final outcome, you’re more likely to make mistakes, not give it your full effort, and overlook crucial steps. Also, the process is often quite fun—especially in traveling. Imagine not enjoying the hike up a mountain side because you’re focused exclusively on what it will feel like when you get to the top.

5.) Excuses

Sometimes excuses are what prevent us from achieving our goals.Your mind likes to stay in a comfort zone and so it will say and do whatever it can to prevent you from moving out of that. Do you hear yourself saying some of the following? If you do, stop for a moment and think. 

-I’m not good enough.

-It’s not the right time.

-I’m too old/young.

-I don’t have the money.

-People will laugh at me.

-What if I fail?

6.) Overly-large steps

If you bite off more than you can chew in one chunk it can be demoralizing and daunting. This is common. Instead of committing to visiting all the countries in the world when you first start out traveling, perhaps start by visiting one.

Every great journey starts with a single step.

7.) Procrastination

Now is the best time to act. It’s easy to say that you’ll travel one day or achieve XYZ in the future when you feel right. Don’t wait until you feel ready, or when the time is right. If you do that, you risk that time never coming. If you can’t complete the whole goal right now, create a mini-goal that you can finish that when done will help you to achieve your larger goal. Any progress is good progress!

8.) Distractions

People, at home, social pressure. These can all distract you from your goals. Remember why you’re trying to achieve your goals, and this can help you keep on track.

9.) Lack of consistency

Are you not doing the same things every day to help achieve your goals? Do you work hard one day and then slack off another?

Show up everyday with effort and you’ll be rewarded. The more consistent you are, the easier it is to achieve goals as they become habits. Get in the habit of talking to locals when you wake up each morning and you’ll find it second nature after a while.

Vacations are about family bonding and creating great family memories together. Good planning is critical or it can easily devolve into a suffer-fest as you wait around or argue about where to eat, how to get there, whether it’s open or not, etc. You may have children that cheerfully tolerate lots of inconveniences – we have ordinary kids. So that means avoiding waiting, long car rides, long walks dragging luggage up a hill, being stuck in the hot sun, not eating on time, or going somewhere that’s closed. Once traveling you can always disregard your plans to spontaneously do something you found that you like better.  There is no downside to having a plan!

Everyone enjoyed eating out at restaurants, there were no chores to do, and we were all together experiencing the same things in our day. When traveling you will often encounter something for the first time, which means the family is problem-solving as a team the travel obstacles you face together. Because on trips we have our camera with us, we actually take family photos. Trips make you conscious of capturing moments together, and that gives us priceless keepsake photos. Life at home often seems like it is passing by very quickly with our daily activities all blurring together. Travel slows time down as we are aware of enjoying every special moment of the precious travel days, and our memories of each trip are long-lasting.

Through experience we’ve learned that the trips we most enjoy are where we do activities together, so we look for trips where we can get out of a vehicle and participate in the new world we’re in. A vacation looking through a car or train window, no matter the views, is not as thrilling or as memorable as a hike, bike ride, horseback ride, ATV, white water rafting, etc.

Enjoy a problem-proof plan!

We’ve found the list of critical elements in a good travel plan includes:

Make restaurant reservations.

Don’t waste precious vacation time waiting or debating. If you do come across a better place you found, you can always cancel your reservation.

Book the earliest flight in the day.

You are less likely to have delays, or if there is a problem you have a better chance of catching another flight the same day.

Book a direct flight.

Chances of problems (lost luggage, missed flight, etc.) are greatly reduced.

Book directly with the airline or hotel.

Ovago, Expedia, etc. are horrible at fixing a problem.

Make sure there is some downtime of several hours every day.

Travel is tiring, and you don’t want people getting cranky because they need a break.

Don’t plan too much sitting or passive entertainment.

Everyone will be in a better mood being active, and especially kids need exercise. When we reminisce about vacations, the most vivid memories of the kids and we have been around activities, not sights. They are also usually where the funny, surprising, and highlights of the vacation happen. Besides, group activities like biking, paddle boarding, hiking, ATVing, snowmobiling, visiting a zoo, rafting, skiing, or horseback riding are fun!

Ration museums and castle-type tours.

Ordinary kids have limited interest in history or views. 

Choose hotels in convenient locations.

Being able to promptly rest or drop luggage is key. 

Choose a hotel with great amenities.

Pay whatever you need for a fabulous pool, early access to an amusement park, free convenient shuttles, monkey tour on golf carts, animals to feed on-site, turtles hatching on the hotel beach, ski in/out, etc. It’s always worth it. Save money somewhere else.

Our Travel Criteria

Price is not a reliable indicator of ‘best.’ For hotels, key criteria are location, amenities, and charm. Luxury for its own sake does not appeal to us – we have no interest in paying for could-be-any-place upscale décor or a butler to unpack our clothes. Where there is no hotel that is in a key location, has a desirable amenity, or a special historical or cultural charm, there’s no point in spending more than on a basic clean and cheap place. We only include truly great restaurants in our itineraries based on the food, location, charm, or history. Because we only have the standard American week or two-week vacation time frame, it’s important to not waste time in transit. Our itineraries always pick the fastest way even if it costs more (ex. cab vs. bus, closest parking lot). Every extra 15 minutes adds up, and you don’t want to miss out, rush an activity, or waste time waiting. Timing is EVERYTHING when it comes to vacations! You won’t see public transportation options on our itineraries unless it’s efficient and easy to use.

Dreaming about traveling here's what it means, according to experts.

When it comes to dream interpretation, so much of it depends on the context and finer details of the dream. To dream about traveling is no exception, with a myriad of variations that can change the meaning of the dream . So, we asked experts about a few of their top interpretations for travel dreams—here's what they had to say.

Dream interpretation.

Before diving in, it's worth noting that any scientific validity to dream interpretation is sparse. Generally, dreams are thought of as a means of memory consolidation and potentially even "predicting" the future (i.e., our brains running through potential scenarios that could happen).

Nevertheless, we've all had dreams that seemed a bit too relevant to our waking lives, raising the question, What was that dream trying to tell me? Only you can truly understand what the symbols in your dreams mean to you, but there are still some common tropes in dreams that interpreters take to have specific meanings.

7 reasons you're dreaming about traveling:

You're craving freedom..

According to dream expert  Leslie Ellis, Ph.D., dreaming about travel can indicate that you're on a quest for freedom. "In this pandemic era where travel has been so restricted, travel dreams could be some form of vicarious way of gaining freedom of movement," she says, adding, "Freud was not entirely wrong about dreams being a form of wish fulfillment, at least some of the time."

You're experiencing some kind of movement in your life.

Along with a craving for freedom, travel dreams can also suggest there's some sort of movement or momentum happening in your life. "Traveling usually represents forward movement—progress in some area," notes professional dream interpreter  Lauri Loewenberg . And as Ellis adds, this "movement" could be personal or professional, as well as actual geographical movement.

You feel in control.

If you're traveling in a vehicle in your dream and it's running smoothly, Loewenberg tells mbg that can mean you feel in control of some aspect of your life. "You want to be driving the car, for example, because that's letting you know that whatever issue this dream is commenting on, you're in control of it," she explains.

You feel out of control.

On the other hand, Loewenberg says, if the car is having some hiccups, such as malfunctioning brakes, "that's a good indication that you're having a hard time getting something started in your real life, or you don't have a good handle on whatever path of progression this is connected to."

She adds that if you're driving a car in your dream and get into an accident, this can mean you're experiencing a sort of emotional or energy crash in your life.

You're experiencing some sort of ending.

Crashes or accidents in travel dreams can also mean something is on the verge of coming to an end in your life (or already has), Loewenberg notes.

The theme of endings existing within travel dreams can also relate to life stages and death, Ellis explains. "They can, at the far end of the journey, indicate preparation for death. There are many accounts of dreams easing people into the final stages of their life , preparing them in ways that tend to be calming and spiritual," she notes.

You're advancing in your career (or thinking about it).

According to Loewenberg, dreams about traveling in a plane , more often than not, are related to your career path, "because the plane takes off and we want our careers to take off and reach new levels." Planes can also represent your spiritual or religious path , she adds.

You're searching for something.

And lastly, depending on your destination, travel dreams can mean you're looking for something in your life. "If your destination is a beach, for example, that means you're trying to reach a place in your life where you are having peace of mind," Loewenberg explains. Or maybe you're traveling to a hospital, which would indicate you're on a healing path, she adds.

Interpretations based on travel companions:

Family members..

With the previous interpretations in mind, it's also important to consider who's accompanying you in the dream. In the case of family members, Ellis says, this could relate to feeling of moving on, or moving forward, as it relates to the family members in the dream.

A romantic partner.

Loewenberg says dreaming about traveling with a partner can offer good insight into how the relationship is going and how you both are reacting within the relationship. "Pay attention to who's behind the wheel and how well the vehicle is moving forward," she suggests, for example.

If you're on a boat, she adds they often represent our relationships. (Relation-"ship," get it?) "A ship or a boat will be commenting on a relationship more than any other vehicle because it travels on water, and water tends to represent the emotional self," Loewenberg explains.

In that case, are you on an extravagant cruise liner that's sailing smoothly? Or are you in a broken-down boat that's sinking fast ? You can guess which one indicates a relationship is heading south.

Co-workers.

If you're dreaming about work colleagues, Ellis says this situates the dream story in the world of work. "Again, it can be telling to look at the mode of travel, ease of transport, and nature of the destination," she notes. Ask yourself if you're getting to where you want to go. "This can be a big life question. Are the people you are with helping or hindering your progress?" Ellis adds.

Traveling solo.

Of course, there's a chance you'll be traveling solo in your dream, as well. Loewenberg says a common vehicle in travel dreams is a bike or motorcycle, which are, of course, single-passenger vehicles. This would be a dream about a path you are on alone that doesn't affect anyone else, she explains.

"You also have to have good balance to operate a bicycle or a motorcycle, so take a good look at your emotional balance or anything you're trying to balance in your life," Ellis adds.

The bottom line.

Dreaming about travel isn't uncommon—and interpreting these dreams always comes down to their context. With these potential interpretations at the ready, you're all set to open your mind to the world of your travel dreams—and consider how they relate to your reality.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path trips, and get you out of any jam. Here are our travel expert’s favorites.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”  

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Race to Charlotte's NASCAR Hall of Fame

As one of the most popular attractions in Charlotte, the NASCAR Hall of Fame pays homage to the sport of racing. This is appealing to fully-grown racing enthusiasts, but there is plenty to keep younger visitors entertained. Regularly scheduled Kids Go Free events attract young NASCAR fans and their families.

No matter when youngsters visit, they can expect to find interactive exhibits that bring racing's heritage and present-day opportunities to life. For the littlest kids, the greatest excitement comes from meeting Lightning McQueen. Older kids are fond of the simulator and the pit crew challenge.

Eating out with picky kids can be frustrating in the best of circumstances. While this problem can be resolved, to some extent, by sticking with fast food or down-home Southern restaurants, another solution is definitely worth exploring: making a pit stop by Charlotte's Optimist Hall. This food hall truly has something for everyone. Many kids adore the fried chicken offerings at Boxcar Betty's, although Harriet's Hamburgers is also a clear favorite.

On a nice day, make the most of the patio seating and outdoor games, which are perfect when hanging out with active kids. Live music and other community events are frequently hosted here, so check out the schedule and visit during a special event, if possible. Don't forget to grab gelato or treats from the Collier Candy Company.

With walkable neighborhoods and an abundance of parks, Charlotte offers a uniquely outdoors-oriented urban experience. At some point, you may eventually be eager to escape the hustle and bustle and, instead, embrace a more peaceful atmosphere. This is when the McDowell Nature Center and Preserve is a dream come true.

As the perfect getaway for Charlotte visitors of all ages, McDowell goes above and beyond the 'typical' nature center as far as kids and families are concerned. Play areas abound, as do easily accessible kits that encourage kids to get up close and personal with the natural world. Especially appealing: a mud kitchen kit that encourages kids to get messy. The educational exhibits are fascinating, with native animals prominently featured.

Older kids and teens will love meandering the several miles of trails, where local birds can always be spotted. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of many outdoor tables. Several of these are located near the lake to provide the perfect lunchtime view. If you crave peaceful things to do with kids Charlotte is sure to please with its natural spaces — and McDowell is the cream of the crop.

When kids have excess energy but rain gets in the way of playground or nature center visits, there is no substitute for a classic trampoline park. There are a few in the region, but Big Air is especially popular. Not only does this expansive facility provide plenty of opportunities for jumping, it also boasts a climbing wall, an obstacle course and even a mechanical bull. Kids are obsessed with this location, which also helps parents embrace their inner child.

Toddler times are great for nervous parents or easily overwhelmed little ones, but bigger kids and teens will always be thrilled to stop by, especially if they can make the most of the dodgeball areas. There are two Big Air locations in the Charlotte area, so feel free to plan your visit based on where your accommodations are located or to minimize commuting between other attractions.

Another great rainy day activity for energetic kids, Monster Mini Golf boasts some truly mesmerizing artwork. The black light course isn't necessarily challenging or novel, but you will be too taken aback by the visuals to care. Get ready for an enjoyable 18-hole course, which sets the tone for a perfectly eerie experience not only with great artwork, but also, with its memorable music. Keep in mind that the littlest visitors may find some of these images intimidating.

This destination is mostly worth visiting for the mini golf, but there are certainly other perks: a sizable arcade with lots of adventure and carnival-style games, plus mini bowling and even a laser maze. Trivia events are also held here on occasion and should easily keep bigger kids entertained when taking a moment to relax.

Easily one of the best places for kids Charlotte Carowinds is a true delight, complete with all the amusement park essentials: roller coasters, live entertainment and even a waterpark. The Carolina Skytower provides a classic experience and great views — and Tidal Wave Bay is a must on a hot day.

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.
