The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience

A sensorial journey into the art of rum..

The starting step to a deeper appreciation for rum and a love for the excellence of Jamaica, the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience is a one-of-a-kind, authentic and multi-sensory experience of what makes Appleton Estate exceptional.

The unique visitor experience moves through all areas of our charming Estate.

Guests are invited to enjoy our comfortable Welcome Centre, the perfect location to relax before starting the tour, and perhaps sample a delicious Appleton Estate cocktail at the bar.

A visit to Appleton Estate must include an introduction to Appleton Estate’s legendary Master Blender, Joy Spence, the world’s first female to achieve this title in the spirits industry. Then, our guests will enjoy a short video on the history of rum and Appleton Estate.

Guests are welcomed to experience our beautiful grounds, where sugar cane gently blows cradled by the warm Jamaican wind. Surrounded by this unique atmosphere, our guests will learn how sugar cane was milled in the 17th century, and be rewarded with a cup of chilled, refreshing sugar cane juice.

Sugar cane turns into molasses, the foundation of authentic Jamaica rum. Our molasses capture our terroir and origin in their essence, a process that guests can experience during their time at the Estate.

The distillery is where our majestic copper pot stills hide the secrets of Appleton Estate’s centuries-old crafting. The sight of a tradition in the quiet atmosphere of our ageing houses, where rums await perfection in oak barrels, is breathtaking.

Every tour of the Appleton Estate must close with a stop in our tasting room, where guests will appreciate with renewed joy our Appleton Estate premium aged rums.

As it happens we was told the wrong time as it left 2 1/2 hrs earlier than we was informed. Sat at the front of the hotel for an hour before a taxi driver got us the information that it had left. Paid for on Viator and organised by Tui Jamaica yet no one would accept responsibility. The TUI reps at Royalton Negril didn't even want to know her attitude was she couldn't care less. They took the gloss off a near perfect holiday and as usual you can't get through to anyone at TUI to complain about it. Absolute disgrace. Read more Written December 21, 2023

I was told by the company to be ready for a 6:25am in the morning pickup from a hotel that was different from the one I was staying at. I got to the appointed meeting place at 6am. I contacted the company at 6:50am but received no answer. I then waited a bit longer. I contacted the company again at 7:30am but no answer. At 8am, I had been waiting for 2 hours outside the gate of the hotel. At this time, I sent another message requesting a refund since the service was never provided. Unfortunately, TUI Jamaica ruined the holiday for me since I had this tour scheduled. As a result, I had to waste an entire day and had to depart the country the next day. This company is disgraceful, and I strongly urge you to not give your money to them and instead to try a different tour company. If this company has guides that cannot even show up when they are supposed to at the start of the day, they should not be in business, or they need better and more trustworthy guides. I'm genuinely disappointed in this company and will never use them again. Read more Written October 13, 2023

What to expect

Rum, waterfalls and floating bars – this excursion has 100% Jamaica stamped all over it. A tour and tasting of the Appleton Estate rum factory gets the day off to a great start, followed by a refreshing dip in the famous YS Falls and a boat ride over to the one and only Pelican Bar.

Kick off at the Appleton Estate and you'll tour the factory that produces what many consider the finest rums in Jamaica. Learn about the distillation process, juice your own cane and, of course, taste the honey-coloured rum. On to the cascading waters of the YS Falls, you'll cool off in the refreshing waterfall pools with a swim.

After lunch, we board a boat and glide out to the Pelican Bar. This ramshackle hut on stilts has to be seen to be believed. Standing on glittering waters, it's probably the coolest bar in the world. Don't forget to carve your name into the wood and if you have a flag handy, bring it out to barman Floyd. With luck, you might spot dolphins too.

  • tepitts 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles More than worth it! We first went here last year and decided to go back again. It's really hard to imagine but you're handed a small "mini bottle" filled with sugar water, and a small hole in the cap of the bottle. From there, you sit down, and in a couple of minutes you have the Jamaican long-tailed hummingbirds literally eating out of your hand. Hummingbirds tend to be very shy, but these are very acclimated to being around humans. Lots of photo and video opportunities! When we went (December 2023), the price was $25 USD, and it was worth every bit of it. Read more Written 7 January 2024

What to expect

For an experience that's 100% Jamaica, look no further than this exclusive private excursion. A tour and tasting of the Appleton Estate rum factory gets the day off to a great start, followed by a refreshing dip in the famous YS Falls and a boat ride over to the one and only Pelican Bar. This is one of our private TUI Collection excursions, which give you a local flavour of the destination while offering you the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the day your way.
