When searching for National Park bus tours for seniors, it’s essential to consider the tour itinerary, duration, included activities, accommodations, and the level of physical activity involved. Always check with the tour operator about their specific offerings and accommodations for senior travelers.

How to Choose a National Park Bus Tour

By following these guidelines, you can confidently choose a National Park bus tour that matches your interests, aligns with your needs, and promises an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking beauty of America’s national parks.

Consider Your Physical Abilities

Before you dive into the tour options, take a moment to assess your physical abilities and limitations. Some tours involve easy walks and minimal physical activity, while others may require more strenuous hikes and outdoor pursuits. Choose a tour that matches your fitness level, ensuring you can fully enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.

Duration and Itinerary

Determine the length of time you wish to spend on the tour. Review the itinerary carefully to ensure it includes visits to the specific attractions that pique your interest. Look for a well-balanced itinerary that covers both iconic landmarks and off-the-beaten-path treasures.

Group Size and Pace

Consider the size of the tour group. Smaller groups often offer a more intimate experience and allow for personalized attention from guides. Also, assess the pace of the tour. If you prefer a leisurely exploration with plenty of time to soak in the scenery, a slower-paced tour might be the right fit.

Inquire about the amenities on the bus, such as restrooms and accessibility features.

The Expertise of Tour Guides

The knowledge and expertise of the tour guides can significantly impact your experience. Look for tours led by certified or experienced guides who are well-versed in the history, geology, and ecology of the national parks. Their insights and storytelling can enrich your journey.

Reviews and Recommendations

Do your research! Read reviews from fellow seniors who have previously taken the tours you’re considering. Their firsthand experiences can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.

Flexibility and Accessibility

Check if the tour operator can accommodate any special dietary needs, mobility requirements, or medical considerations you may have. A tour that prioritizes accessibility ensures everyone can enjoy the adventure.

Then, you’ll have around three hours to explore Yosemite Valley on your own. You can check out the impressive Yosemite Falls and even take a hike to the Lower Falls. There are also options for lunch, hiking, renting bikes, visiting museums, and using the free shuttle to see other parts of the park.

Your tour includes a comfy air-conditioned bus, a guide to tell you interesting things, an entrance to the park, a bus tour in Yosemite Valley, lots of chances for photos, and free time.

Zion National Park Tour

Enjoy a complimentary breakfast snack during the relaxing 3-hour drive across Southern Utah. Take in the breathtaking scenery, like the impressive Virgin River Gorge, as you travel along I-15 on your way to Zion. The canyon walls tower above you on both sides, creating a truly stunning route.

Midway through the drive, your driver and guide will pick up a fresh deli lunch for you on the way from Las Vegas to Zion. You can savor your lunch on the bus or have a picnic when you arrive at the park.

Unlike standard Grand Canyon tour companies that use a single person for driving and guiding, at Grand Canyon Destinations, they prioritize safety and service. That’s why they have a separate driver and tour guide on every tour bus. Your dedicated tour guide will be there to provide guidance, share interesting facts and stories, answer your questions, and assist you throughout the tour.

Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by the stunning sandstone cliffs outside your window. The park’s diverse shades of red, orange, and pink rocks will surround you as you venture further into the park. Your first stop in Zion will be at the Zion Visitor Center. Here, you can gather more information about the park, obtain maps, and learn about hiking trails before setting out into Zion.

You’ll have up to 6 hours to explore the wonders of Zion National Park, providing ample time for hiking and other activities of your choice. Hop onto the park shuttle at the Zion Visitor Center to witness the park’s main scenic feature, Zion Canyon. This vast view offers a glimpse of the park’s truly grand scale.

Acadia National Park Tours

You can experience the wonder and beauty of Acadia National Park from mid-May to October. These tours, featuring stops within Acadia National Park, dive into the history of Bar Harbor and Acadia, the park’s geology, its wildlife, and much more. You’ll visit key spots like the summit of Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole by the ocean, and Sieur De Monts Spring with the Wild Gardens of Acadia.

All the tours are on comfy buses equipped with an amplified PA system. You won’t need to walk much, and you can decide how much walking you want to do. Restrooms are available at the ticket office and at each park stop.

Classic Tour (2.5 Hours) – This is the classic, tried-and-true tour since 1955! It’s 2.5 hours long and includes three stops within Acadia National Park: Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole, and Sieur De Mont’s Spring. Each stop is about 15-20 minutes.

Premium Tour (3.5 – 4 Hours) – The Premium Tour is an extended version of the Classic Tour, lasting 3.5 to 4 hours. This tour takes place on an elegant Berkshire Coach and covers the full 27-mile Park Loop Road, with four stops within Acadia National Park: Cadillac Mountain, Sieur De Mont’s Spring, Thunder Hole, and The Jordan Pond House. Each stop lasts around 20-30 minutes.

Adventure by Bus

The Rocky Mountain Conservancy Field Institute invites you to go on a remarkable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Rocky Mountain National Park. These guided bus tours offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the park’s diverse areas, including the iconic Trail Ridge Road, the serene Bear Lake Road, the Grand Lake, and the enchanting meadow areas where you can witness the elk rut during the fall season.

The comfortable 14-passenger bus ensures a relaxed and immersive experience, allowing you to soak in the park’s natural beauty. What sets these tours apart is the presence of the skilled naturalist guides who accompany you on each adventure. Their expertise and passion for the park add a layer of depth to your journey. These guides not only ensure your safety but also share their knowledge about the park’s rich flora, fauna, geology, and history, making each tour an educational and enlightening experience.

Red Bus Tours

The iconic Red Buses offer an ideal means to explore and gain a deeper understanding of Glacier National Park. Dating back to the 1930s, these vintage buses hold a special place in the park’s human history and heritage. Given the park’s predominantly vertical landscape, the roll-back tops of the Red Buses offer unobstructed views of the majestic mountains and the park’s signature Big Sky. The tour guides are seasoned park enthusiasts who are passionate about sharing their love for the park with visitors.

It’s worth noting that the fleet of 33 Red Buses in Glacier is considered one of the world’s oldest touring fleets, which means that the seating does not meet today’s standards. These buses can accommodate 16 passengers, with four people seated on bench-style seating.

What Should You Consider When Picking A USA Bus Tour For Seniors?

Small group vs. large group tours.

Senior couple hiking

When you’re planning your tour, you may see that some tour groups only consist of 10 to 15 people, while some offer space for up to 40 or 50 sightseers. So, what’s the best way to travel, with a small group or a large party?

For a more intimate experience, smaller is always better. You’ll also feel less crowded on a bus. However, a larger group may offer you more opportunities to make friends. Larger tours may also cost less than smaller tours.

A smaller tour may also allow you to ask your guide more questions and find out more information as you go, whereas with a larger group you may not get much one-on-one time with your tour guides.

All-age tours vs. seniors-only tours

Tour group with different ages

There are some obvious perks to joining a seniors-only tour. There are other travelers your age, so if you are traveling alone it will be easy to make a friend in your age bracket. The downside to a seniors-only tour is that some seniors enjoy being around kids and people of all ages and find it more interesting.

A seniors-only tour will also plan excursions with seniors in mind, which may mean less activity than an all-ages group, which may tire seniors out with more walking, hiking, or sightseeing than a senior can handle.

A seniors-only group understands the limitations that seniors have while traveling, so there are benefits to both types of tours here.

Planned vs. open itinerary tours

Seniors looking at itinerary on tablet

When it comes to bus tours, there are a few different types, but one thing you’ll definitely notice as you plan your vacation is that some tours have every day and hour planned out, while some tour companies give you a bit more freedom to see what you like.

The benefit of having the itinerary planned is that you have everything done for you and you can go along and enjoy the sights instead of worrying about preplanning your tour or what you should see and where you should go.

The best of both worlds is ideal – you should opt for a tour that gives you plenty of guided options along with a couple of free days here and there to explore on your own. Too much freedom can be stressful, but not enough can feel too rigid.

It’s easy to make a reservation for an OVERNIGHT Van or Motorcoach Tour. Simply call us, or fill out our online reservation form. We’ll ask you for a bit of information and a $100 nonrefundable deposit. Wondering why that deposit is nonrefundable? Kindred Tours has made deposits to hotels, vendors, and attractions… sometimes months in advance, and that money is often nonrefundable to us. Your final payment for OVERNIGHT Van or Motorcoach Tours will be due 45 days prior to your departure date . Final payments are nonrefundable . On rare occasions, Kindred Tours may need to cancel a tour prior to departure. If this happens, we’ll notify you as far in advance as possible. You, of course, will receive a full refund for the cost of your tour, or you can transfer your credit to another tour of your choice.

ONE-DAY Van or Motorcoach Tours must be paid for when you make your reservation. Reservations can be made either by phone or online. One-day tours are nonrefundable within 30 days of the tour.

Tips on Tipping

People ask us all the time about tipping. “Should we?” and “How much?” While we at Kindred Tours want to make it clear that we do not require tips, they are certainly appreciated by our tour guides and drivers when the service meets or exceeds your expectations.

As to the amounts, use your own judgment. Recommendations are all over the map. USA Today recommends $3 to $5 per person for half-day trips, $10 for a full-day excursion, and $1  to $2 for a one or two hour tour. On overnight tours, calculate the per-day tip and multiply it by the number of days, and add $1 to $2 per person for loading and unloading bags.

Trip Advisor suggests that most major Tour Operators are suggesting $4 – $5.00 per day per passenger. At this rate you should budget $8 – $10.00 per day if traveling as a couple. The guideline is per person not per couple. Tips to the driver usually fall within the same range.

Again, these are just guidelines and we want to repeat that they are not required. Give a tip if you think one is warranted.

Can I arrange a Kindred Tour for my group?

Absolutely  and there are so many great ways that we can work together.  select a tour from our newsletter or website, and we’ll take care of all the details—providing marketing materials, sending a representative to speak with your group, and collecting payments.  if you need help selecting a tour, give us a call.  and you’re not limited to our current selection of tours.  we’ll work hard to customize or plan a tour specifically for your group.  just give us a call, and we’ll get started., do you have bathrooms on your buses, we get this one a lot  but you needn’t worry about bathroom breaks.  we make a stop for  coffee and doughnuts early into  every tour, usually at a roadside rest-area, and always conveniently located near a restroom.  we make regular pit stops through the day, and our drivers brag that they know every public restroom in the american southwest.  ask any kindred traveler and they’ll say that they all had concerns about bathroom breaks heading into their first tour that were quickly forgotten., how do i know if the activity level is right for me, kindred travelers range in age from 50 to over 100 years old, an enormous span that encompasses a huge range of abilities.  we work hard every day to provide great tours to meet the needs and the interests of our entire group.  if  you are unsure if a tour is right for you, we invite you to call the office  to discuss your concerns.  we’re happy to provide you with more detail about a tour and answer your questions.  we’ll work with you to find your perfect tour., can i pay a single supplement, if you really feel that you’d like to have your own hotel room, consider paying a single supplement.  a single supplement is just the additional 50% on the hotel room expense that you would have shared with a roommate., can you find me a roommate, we get asked this question a lot, and the answer is always yes  don’t let the fact that you are single keep you from signing up for a tour.  the majority of people who travel with kindred tours are single.  they sign up for a tour, we assign them a roommate, and they often go on to become lifelong friends.  we have decades of success matching roommates., how do i pay for my tour, use your credit card when you sign-up online, or when you call the office to make a reservation.  we do not keep your card credit information on file.  you can also sign up for a tour, receive confirmation of your reservation from the office, and then pop a check into the mail.  most reservations for extended tours require a $100 deposit, with the balance to be paid closer to the date of the tour., what if the trip is full, we’ll always encourage you to use the wait list  when a trip fills, and it can happen very quickly, we begin a wait list. if there’s enough participation to fill a second bus, we’ll let you know.  we’ll also check with our wait list, should we have any cancellations, fielding those requests in the order in which they were received., how do i sign up for a tour, check out online for one-stop shopping, or call the office to make a reservation.  you may reach our voicemail, after all we are in the travel business, but leave us a message and we’ll always call you back to confirm.  , where do i meet the van, mesa: mesa doubletree hotel 1011 w . holmes ave mesa, az 85210.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Trip of a lifetime! We loved Spain & Portugal and saw way more amazing and wonderful places & things than we ever expected. Our Tour Director Toni Aguilar made the entire trip even more special. He was simply terrific and such a decent person. Thank you Toni. Itinerary just fine. Main challenge for us was the unexpected pretty constant go go go rush rush rush. No one’s fault as we now understand how Land Tours truly work hard to have us see as much as possible in limited time frames. Overall, we were very pleased."

"A great mix of sites, experiences, local culture & food. Our Tour Director & Bus Driver took care of our safety and schedule. We were well informed about all departures, excursions, etc. There are a few early morning departures but it allowed more time to explore at some destinations. *Note; Not all hotels had air conditioning and some that did “at their discretion” had not turned it on yet in March/April."

Rhythms of the South (11 Days)

The tour was well put together, the tour guide was excellent, the quality of the accommodation differed at each destination. The Clarion in Nashville was average but clean but the breakfast was not good especially the fact that we were given paper plates and plastic cutlery. The Guest House at Graceland was fabulous but did not include any breakfast which was a little disappointing. The Natchez Hotel (Hampton Inn) was dreadful as we had fungus growing behind the curtains. The breakfast again was dreadful with paper plates and plastic cutlery. The Wyndham in New Orleans was pretty good but the the breakfast which was not included was expensive and not good. Most hotels did not include tea only coffee and The Guest House would chargeover $8 if you asked for a tea bag.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.
