Rejuvenated and forward-looking, this stunningly beautiful Central American country has momentum building that landed it a spot in our Learn category.

El Salvador’s idyllic beaches are catching the attention of professional surfers from around the world as it works hard to establish itself as Surf City. The country is quietly becoming the place where those in the know come to catch waves and hone their surfing skills.

There’s so much to learn about this country. Lonely Planet guidebook author Paige R. Penland plans out your four-day getaway to its coastal waters, quaint towns and volcanoes.

best-in-travel-2023-el-salvador-itinerary-intro.png

I’ve visited El Salvador a dozen times since 2006, when I was lead author on Lonely Planet Nicaragua & El Salvador . I’ll be taking my 9-year-old son on the next trip, to visit Isla de los Pájaros and the epic waterparks for which this country should be better known. (Search for Apuzunga, Turicentro Atecozol and Canopys del Rio Sunzal to see what I mean.)

El Salvador itinerary snapshot

Why I think you should visit El Salvador

El Salvador offers almost everything travelers to Latin America are looking for, just three hours by plane from Miami: sunny beaches, quaint colonial towns, stunning volcanoes, colorful handicrafts, low prices and arguably the finest cuisine in Central America.

It is compact, with dramatic topography and excellent (main) roads. You could literally surf La Libertad all morning, relax over lunch in Spanish Colonial Suchitoto and watch sunset from a chilly 8000ft (2400m) at Hostal Miramundo – and only spend about four hours total in the car.

All of this makes El Salvador an easy escape for North Americans on a long weekend. If time is no object, however, two to four weeks would be ideal.

Budget travelers can enjoy El Salvador on $40 per day, and much less if you plan carefully. Mid-range travelers will be comfortable on $100 per day (not including rental car). Luxury lovers will find a small selection of excellent resorts and restaurants for about half what they’d pay in more-popular Latin American destinations.

Travelers may read the international criticism of El Salvador’s current government and worry that their money is supporting it. There is some truth to that. On balance, however, I think tourism favors the little guy – Jack Ma taught himself English as a tour guide, after all. Think before you spend, and try to support local businesses with El Salvador’s best interests at heart.

El Salvador’s official currency has been the US dollar since 2001, another convenience for US travelers. In 2021, President Bukele made Bitcoin El Salvador’s second official currency, and it’s widely accepted through smartphone apps. That decision was controversial, to say the least – yet tourism has since grown an astonishing 30%.

I appreciate the Bitcoin bump because not every article about El Salvador begins with “war-torn” anymore. It’s not. This is a small country with big dreams, still willing to believe in the future. And that’s the real reason why you should come.

El Salvador itinerary overview day 1

Start with a perfect day in the capital

This itinerary assumes travelers have rented a car ($40–80/day). If you use public transportation, double travel times or check online bus schedules.

Our journey begins at Romero International Airport – or, if you’ve already been relaxing with the sun and surf along El Salvador’s 186mi (307km) coastline, 20 minutes away in La Libertad. Whether you’ve been here all week or just arrived, we’re headed up to the capital, San Salvador.

10am – Pupusas for breakfast

Pull off the highway in Olocuilta, where a tidy strip of pupuserías serve up stacks of the city’s signature rice pupusas , more delicate and refined than the more widely available corn masa versions of El Salvador’s cheap, filling national dish. If you’re looking for a more elegant brunch, enjoy gourmet tamales, omelets and tost secreto (Salvadoran-style avocado toast) at Tu Jardín Secreto. The relaxing garden setting is in Planes de Renderos, a popular escape from the city with parks, horseback rides and the family-friendly, 20-minute hike up Puerta del Diablo, a startling rock formation with views to the Pacific Ocean from the top.

11am – Arrive in Colonia Escalón

Our base in the capital is posh Colonia Escalón, with upscale shopping, dining and accommodation options. After coffee at Tipicos Margoth, catch a cab to the Museum of Anthropology for an overview of El Salvador’s history, including pre-Columbian relics, Spanish Colonial art and exhibits that explore modern challenges, from the civil war to gang violence and mass emigration.

From there, it’s a short walk to the National Craft Market, where artisans sell quality handicrafts from around the country, including comfortable hand-woven hammocks, clever ceramic dioramas from Ilobasco and the colorful naive folk art of La Palma – which you’ll see firsthand tomorrow.

2pm – Head to Centro Historico

Take a taxi to the Centro Historico, home to the National Palace, National Theater and Metropolitan Cathedral, the final resting place of St Oscar Romero. As you explore the city center’s parks, plazas and markets, don’t miss the somber Monument of Memory and Truth in Parque Cuscatlán, engraved with the names of those lost during El Salvador’s civil war (1980–92), and be sure to step inside Iglesia El Rosario to see the symphony of rainbows its windows play upon the sculptural interior.

4:30pm – Check out Volcán San Salvador

Grab a cab to the top of Volcán San Salvador ($20, 40 minutes) and watch the sunset and city lights over exquisite grilled meats and seafood served with sweet potato biscuits at Las Brumas.

9pm – Enjoy San Salvador’s nightlife

There’s time for a disco nap before the country’s best nightlife begins. Look forward to an ever-changing assortment of clubs and bars: enjoy laid-back city views at The Rooftop, dinner and live music at Republik and all-night dance parties at AliVE.

El Salvador itinerary overview day 2

A perfect day in the Central Highlands

10am – Arrive at Suchitoto’s tiny Puerto San Juan, a cheerful cluster of souvenir stores, restaurants and a dock overlooking Lake Suchitlán, just 45 minutes from the capital. Boats ($35) offer one-hour tours around the islands, including Isla de Los Pájaros (“Bird Island”), its trees shrieking and singing with the voices of some 400 species of mostly migratory birds: jabiru storks, seagulls, cormorants, pelicans and many more.

Noon – Lunch at Villa Balanza

After lunch at artsy Villa Balanza, it’s time to check in at the meticulously restored, 200-year-old mansion that is now one of El Salvador’s most luxurious properties, Los Almendros de San Lorenzo. The courtyards are hung with marvelous art and Moorish details, and filled with gardens and a sparkling pool: an architectural gem even by Suchitoto’s high standards.

1:30pm – Stroll through the city

Just strolling the cobbled streets of this breezy Spanish Colonial city is a delight. The rich blue textiles fluttering from the doors are dyed with indigo, grown here since Pipil Mayans ran the place. Arte Añil, across from picturesque Iglesia Santa Lucia, offers classes (90 minutes, $100 per group) where you can try your hand at this ancient art.

4pm – Mayan-influenced art in La Palma

An hour north of Suchitoto is La Palma, birthplace of the vibrant, Mayan-influenced naive art that has become synonymous with El Salvador itself. It was pioneered by artist Fernando Llort in the 1970s to help local artisans thrive; today, you can visit workshops covered with murals, and watch artists create the vibrant pieces from wood, glass and other materials. After Llort’s most famous piece, on San Salvador’s Metropolitan Cathedral, was destroyed in 2011, artists recreated it using digital mapping and projected it onto the facade.

9pm – Back to Los Almendros for Dinner

Although Suchitoto has several excellent restaurants, we’ll return to Los Almendros for dinner, where chefs use Salvadoran ingredients and French techniques to create award-winning recipes. Try the mariscada , a traditional Salvadoran seafood stew with lobster and cream; the dijon chicken baguette; or the vegetarian lasagna. If you’re game, Suchitoto’s nightlife scene is small but always festive.

El Salvador itinerary overview day 3

Pyramids and Volcanoes

After a leisurely breakfast at Café 1800, it’s an hour to Joya de Cerén, also called Central America’s Pompeii. While you’ve probably seen the massive stone pyramids and ballcourts of the Classical Mayan capitals (if not, the ruins of Copán are 5 hours north of Suchitoto), the modest lives of Mayan villagers are mostly lost to time.

Except here. Preserved since 600CE beneath 33ft (10m) of volcanic ash, small, lovingly decorated adobe homes, a temezcal (sweat lodge) and the oldest cultivated yuca (manioc) make this one of Central America’s most important archaeological sites. Fifteen minutes away, San Andrés was the regional Mayan administrative center, with small stone pyramids and the remains of a Spanish Colonial indigo-processing facility.

1pm – Volcanoes in Cerro Verde National Park

It’s another hour to Cerro Verde National Park, with three magnificent volcanoes and several hikes, including an easy half-mile (1km) loop with unforgettable views. Athletic travelers can arrange steep, three- to six-hour guided hikes ($9) to the top of either Izalco Volcano’s barren, steaming cinder cone, or to Santa Ana’s nested calderas and scenic lakes. These hikes leave at 10am and must be done with a guide, which might mean shifting your itinerary.

4pm – Stay overnight at Lago Coatepeque

There are great places to stay in the park, but we’re headed to the enormous (10 sq miles/25 sq km), sparkling crater lake you were admiring on your hike, Lago Coatepeque. It’s another impossibly scenic hour in the car to the lakeshore, which is lined with hotels, restaurants and bars, most with swimming docks

Lodging along the lakefront runs from $10 to $200 per night, so you’ll have a pick for your budget. Dinner at La Octava Maravilla costs about $20 – and it’s mandatory. I’ll be having the mojarra rellena , a whole fried fish stuffed with shrimp and other shellfish.

After dinner, order an ice-cold beer at one of the lakefront bars. The party can go all night.

El Salvador itinerary overview day 4

Stop and smell the flowers in El Salvador

After breakfast on the lake, it’s another hour to Entre Ríos Ecopark ($3), outside the town of Izalco. Slip into one of the natural hot and cold pools to relax, or try the water slides. When you’re ready, order brunch right to your hammock.

1pm – Visit Ruta las Flores

Ruta las Flores is El Salvador’s most popular inland attraction, a strand of lovely little towns and accessible natural wonders in the coffee-growing highlands between Sonsonate and the Guatemalan border. If it’s Saturday, we’ll stop at Juayúa’s famed Gastronomic Festival, which runs every weekend with stands selling styrofoam plates piled grilled meats, spiced prawns and tasty rice dishes, and where souvenirs, cocktails and artwork are for sale while live music plays and “Zorro” offers horseback rides. Otherwise, it’s onto Ataco.

3pm – Handicrafts shop at Axul Artesanía

After coffee at El Jardín de Celeste, we’ll explore the ancient city, making sure to visit Axul Artesanía. The handicrafts shop is an experience in itself, with working looms and unique paintings that flirt with high art. The owners are also responsible for for Ataco’s superb collection of selfie-friendly murals. Later, we’ll learn more about the coffee growing all around us on El Carmen Estates’ plantation tour ($6; 75 minutes).

6pm – Drinks at Casa Degraciela

Wherever we dine in Ataco, we’ll finish with drinks in the courtyard of Casa Degraciela, a sprawling, 150-year-old coffee plantation mansion that’s now a luxurious B&B. Someday we’ll come back, but tonight we’ve reserved the Japón suite at Santa Teresa Hot Springs Resort, just 20 minutes away.

7pm – Enjoying the private hot spring

We splurged on this spacious suite because it comes with a private hot spring, drawn from the same natural thermal waters that flow like a river through the resort gardens and surrounding coffee plantation. Relax beneath the stars as you plot your return to El Salvador.

Review: Avianca VIP Lounge El Salvador (SAL)

a sign on a wall

My love of the Avianca VIP lounge in San Salvador can be summed up in three words: chicken tortilla soup. That made an otherwise drab lounge a rather nice place spend a very long layover in El Salvador International Airport (SAL).

Avianca VIP Lounge El Salvador (SAL) Review

The lounge is located in front of Gate 8 and open daily from 6:o0am to 9:30pm. Access is reserved for Star Alliance Gold members or Star Alliance business and first class travelers. Avianca LifeMiles Silver members also have access as well as some banking partners in Latin America.

a sign in a building

The lounge looked clean and modern, with fresh carpeting, fresh furniture, and brightly-colored walls.

a hallway with a white wall and red and white striped wall

A children’s area provided space for children to make noise behind glass doors, though I did not see a single child throughout my stay.

a room with a couch and a tv

Work areas included every other chair removed and tables were spaced out to encourage social distancing.

a room with white desks and tables

Plugs and USB-A chargers were available along the walls and in a back room, though lacking for much of the lounge. Internet was very slow in the main room, but faster in the rear room (second picture below).

a white rectangular outlet with multiple ports

Restrooms were available, but not showers.

a bathroom with sinks and mirrors

In terms of food and drink, all choices were behind a counter, with a plexiglass shield separating workers from lounge guests.

Food selection included cold cuts (meat and cheese), sandwiches, freshly cut fruit, and much to my delight, chicken tortilla soup. Not only was the soup tasty (delicious chunks of chicken breast), but the toppings: cilantro, onions, avocado really made this a nice snack. I may or may not have three bowls…

a room with a counter and chairs

Drinks, like the club soda I ordered, were served in disposable plastic cups, but the food was served in ceramic dishes (with plastic, one-time use cutlery).

a can of soda and a glass of soda

Other drinks selections include soft drinks, coffee, drinkable yogurt, red and white wine, Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky, and Flor de Caña rum.

a bar with bottles of alcohol and fruit

The soup endeared me to this lounge. Everything else was just fine, though I appreciated having access to this during my long layover in SAL.

During a recent trip to Bolivia, I connected through El Salvador International Airport in San Salvador (SAL) on Avianca. I don’t hold elite status with Avianca or Star Alliance, but this lounge is part of the Plaza Premium Lounge network. That was good news for me, as I hoped to grab some breakfast during a 2-hour layover from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. (and coming off a flight that didn’t include any free drinks or snacks).

The lounge had some basics and provided a good spot to rest while waiting for flights, but you might not get everything you hoped for. It’s not a lounge I would go out of my way to visit again, but it has some useful features that you might enjoy.

Here’s a look at my visit to the Avianca VIP Lounge at SAL.

The Avianca VIP Lounge is located near gate 8 in the main hallway of the sole terminal at SAL. The large sign on the wall makes it easy to find.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL sign

Gaining Access

Business class passengers on Avianca flights get access, as do those with Avianca LifeMiles Diamond elite status. Star Alliance Gold elites also gain access to the Avianca VIP Lounge. And Avianca elites with lower status tiers can redeem their Elite Points for lounge visits.

Signs near the door indicated that the lounge is part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection and accepts visitors from DragonPass. There was no sign outside to indicate its membership in the Plaza Premium Lounge network, but the lounge is listed on the Plaza Premium website . As such, you can use a card that has access to this lounge network, such as The Platinum Card ® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express , or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . Thus, I used my Amex Platinum card to get in.

It’s also possible to pay to visit the lounge. Plaza Premium sells access for $40, but Avianca sells it for just $25. You also have the option to pay 1,800 LifeMiles for entry — a value close to 1.4 cents per mile, which is typical for the value of LifeMiles . This might be the best option for paying to get in.

The Avianca VIP Lounge at SAL is open daily until 9 p.m. What time does it open? That depends on who you ask. I saw a sign stating 5:30 a.m. and another stating 6 a.m.

Amex, Plaza Premium, and Avianca provide a mix of 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. answers. I figured I’d resolve this by asking a few different employees, but again, there was a discrepancy. Just keep in mind that you may have to wait until 6 a.m. for the doors to open.

The agent who welcomed me to the lounge was friendly and efficient, checking me in quickly and with a smile — once he noticed I was there. However, getting him to stop talking to a friend long enough to acknowledge my presence and check me in took a little effort.

By most standards, the lounge isn’t impressive. I quickly noticed the cafeteria-style seating in most of the lounge, that it didn’t have showers, and that standard lounge etiquette was clearly not a standard practice in this lounge . People were watching videos on their phones without headsets and talking loudly with their friends.

However, I also noticed some surprising perks while walking around: a children’s room and a quiet room. More on those below.

Most seating in this lounge reminded me of a college cafeteria. Formica tables with plastic chairs serve a very utilitarian purpose, but they don’t scream “comfort” or encourage you to stay for a long time.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL seating

The chairs and tables were to the front and the right after passing the reception desk. At the far side and turning back, as if you’re making a U-shape around the reception desk, you’ll find a quiet room . The lights were off, and several people were sleeping here in the recliner chairs.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL quiet room

There were 4 chairs on each side of the room, and this was a surprising amenity for an otherwise ho-hum lounge visit. If you’re at the airport really early or really late (or have a canceled flight that creates a long connection), this would be your favorite feature in the lounge, I’m sure.

Food and Beverage

Looking at reviews on LoungeBuddy plus seeing what was on other people’s plates in the lounge far exceeds what I could round up. That is, not much.

The buffet area was to the left of the main hallway after the reception desk.

The lounge makes only a certain amount of items for breakfast in the morning. When I arrived at 7:30 a.m., a friendly employee at the buffet told me they’d just run out of … pretty much everything . Sandwiches were out, pancakes were out, and the staff in the kitchen were cutting up more fruits to restock.

That was a bit of a surprise, so I figured I’d head to the bathroom, check some emails, and take a few photos. Circling back later, “5 more minutes” was the update. I managed to grab a bread roll while waiting, but I got the same “5 minutes” answer when I made a final check before needing to depart for my boarding gate.

Be prepared that the lounge seems to struggle with keeping the buffet stocked in the mornings. I can’t speak to how it is during other times of the day, but it led to me buying something to eat next to my gate while we were boarding.

I saw other people with food, but I couldn’t get any because they’d run out of everything and were making more. Know that this is a possibility if you visit this lounge.

Despite the food shortage, there was abundant coffee, hot water for making tea, and orange juice . The same employee who told me the food would be ready in “5 minutes” told me I could have Coke or Sprite if I wanted, and she would grab one from the back.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL drink options

She said these aren’t typically available during breakfast time, but she felt bad having nothing else to offer.

Signs with the internet password were available throughout the lounge, including at the reception desk, near the buffet, and in the TV room. Speeds were solid, around 35 Mbps downloads, and the signal was reliable.

Past the buffet, there was a children’s playroom. This brightly-colored room had a few toys, a TV with children’s programming , and leather sofas lining the wall — presumably for the parents.

Because there were young children playing here during my visit, I didn’t take photos.

As mentioned above, there was a quiet room. While much of the lounge felt noisy, with people watching videos or talking on the phone loudly, people respected the concept of a quiet room religiously . I never heard a peep from this corner of the lounge.

Past the buffet (to the left of the main hallway), there was a large TV room and relaxation area . This was much more comfortable than the cafeteria seating in the larger room outside.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL TV room left side

This room was essentially mirrored from one side to the other, though the TV on the left side was on. The TV being off on the right side was the only difference.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL TV room right side

Leather couches lined the wall all the way around this room, and there were a handful of colored footrests.

Near the reception desk, a hallway to the left led to a large room with desks, chairs, and dividers on 1 side and bar stools with a counter on the other. Desks had both 3-prong outlets (U.S. plug style) and USB ports for charging your devices.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL work space

Past the workspace, bathrooms were at the end of the hallway. These were fairly standard and did not include showers or any notable features.

Avianca VIP lounge SAL bathroom

Service needs improvement. Yes, the employees were all very friendly when I spoke to them. And I love that a smiling employee offered me a Coke, but that was to make up for the fact that they’d let all the food run out on the buffet. Since food service is part of the overall service, that’s a major negative.

I also have to point out that the employee at the front desk ignored me for a few minutes while cracking jokes with his friend (it didn’t appear this other person worked there) until I finally said, “Excuse me?”

Once I got his attention, he was really friendly. And the same goes for the woman who kept telling me the food would be ready in “5 minutes.” They were friendly, full of smiles, and really nice. However, that’s not all that counts when evaluating service.

Having an empty buffet and ignoring guests who want to check in counts more than some smiles. If the employees could be friendly and keep the buffet stocked as well as not ignore guests, that would be a winning combination.

In comparison to other lounges in the world, the Avianca VIP Lounge at SAL isn’t anything special. It has a few positives but also has several negatives. The children’s play area (if you’re traveling with kids) and the sleeping area were highlights among the amenities. The inconsistent service definitely brought down the experience.

If I’d paid to enter the lounge, I’d be really bummed about this experience. Since it didn’t cost me anything extra to enter this lounge, it ranks as just “fair.”
