Unreal Paris

Great graphics do not necessarily make for a great game, but they do make for an awfully impressive virtual tour through a beautiful Parisian apartment. Like this one, for instance, created by Benoit Dereau, a "CG generalist and level designer," who said it's his first work in the Unreal Engine 4.

Obviously we're still a bit away from playing 60 FPS games at this level of visual fidelity, and Dereau said on the Polycount forums that "optimization was not the center of my work with this scene." But the texture quality, reflective surfaces, and lighting effects are spectacular, and even more remarkable is that it can all be generated with a standard-spec PC and a low-cost engine .

The actual demo isn't currently available; Dereau had released it but took it down earlier today to fix some bugs. An updated build is expected to be available tomorrow at BenoitDereau.com . Thanks, NeoGAF .

How to use Unreal Engine for Virtual Event Production

Unreal engine is the standard software of choice for virtual event production due to its real-time capabilities, advanced handling of all aspects of the production process (e.g. sound), and its smooth animation workflow. If you’re familiar with creating games in Unreal Engine or building out previs for your virtual sets, then you’re already three steps ahead of the crowd. The process on Unreal is pretty similar to what you’re familiar with.

How Unreal Engine is used by virtual events and shows

Studios use Unreal to build virtual environments to give fantastical performances in real-time.  The visual effects can be extremely advanced or understated depending on the scope of the project. Most commonly, Unreal Engine is used in three main ways:

  • To build virtual sets for live production
  • To aid in creating accurate animatics and previs
  • To render virtual venue in real-time

In some cases (like that of the Karate Combat show), Unreal Engine is used to record the virtual venue in real-time. The recordings are sent to a studio for post-production to form a rock-solid virtual production pipeline. Another popular use case is using the game engine to add 3D graphics to the weather channel during a live broadcast. This is an example of how virtual reality is slowly creeping into even the most mundane aspects of content creation.

How the music industry pioneered Unreal Engine for virtual event production

Unlike the film industry, celebrity musicians have been fast to pick up the concept of virtual venues. But they’re certainly not limited to the virtual world alone. Deadmau5 is most famous for his mind-blowingly complex events that extensively use augmented reality technology to create mesmerizing visualizations that stun crowds.

As one of the keynote speakers for Unreal Engine’s 2021 virtual conference, Deadmau5 reveals his highly complex technical considerations when planning a show . He describes how he creates an Unreal build to develop a virtual set as a sort of previs for his performances. They provide a sneak peek to his production team so they can see exactly what they need to build to make the vision a reality. Deadmau5 can then focus on coding the accompanying light show with pinpoint accuracy. The game engine renders the elements in real time during live events, even pulling in a live feed of social media posts to make shows a truly “live” experience.

A great example of a successful virtual event which saw buy in from mainstream artists was the Astronomical Fortnite event. As the name suggests, the virtual concert was held within Fortnite on the well-known Fortnite Island. Players could log on, and interact with the surroundings, making their avatars dance and run around in the trippy landscape. In a twist, the landscape transformed into a series of immersive virtual worlds, building a better story than any real live performance could hope to achieve.

“Astronomical” on Fortnite in 2020 was the first entirely virtual music event.

The real-time immersive 3D was the starting point for virtual reality and showed significant promise as over 12 million players logged on to the game at the same time. The concept of virtual concerts was first tested out by Epic Games in  2019 with the DJ Marshmellow, bringing a respectable 10 million concurrent players. The 2019 virtual performance had stationary graphics more reminiscent of a real stage and highlights the incredible advances made in just one year of development. Check it out below.

The technicalities of holding a virtual event through Unreal Engine

Virtual event film production using Unreal Engine software requires significant investment in building 3D assets, creating a virtual studio and setting up real-world hardware. You can expect to invest heavily in LED walls, complex rigs, lighting systems, and cameras for live music events. Live stream events that are more post-production heavy like Karate Combat, have more physical set requirements such as green screens and matching virtual camera movement.

For virtual productions that exist entirely within the 3D world, expect to get deep into motion capture technology, environment design, and broadcast network requirements. Digital artists walk you through the creation of the Astronomical Fortnite event. They used a basic environment with props and a suited mocap actor to map out the previs for animators.

If you want a more straightforward setup for a small project, short episodes, or a student experiment, check out how you can create a virtual event using Rokoko Studio. The National Film School of Denmark is currently using this workflow to create a faster short film workflow with their students.

Considering sound for virtual events

With the introduction of VR headsets, immersive experiences have been the focus of every new feature development. Unreal Engine has created an advanced tool that mimics the ambient sound of music throughout an environment. So, for example, if you walk into a nearby virtual room from the main concert hall, the volume, reverberance, and pitch of the music will adjust realistically. See how Unreal Engine handles ambisonic sound field rendering:

Holding a virtual event is a potent engagement tool

The real-time tech that makes virtual events possible is powerful when used for both live shows and the previs of performances. It allows large teams of people to visualize a set or a sequence of events immediately without any space for miscommunication. And that’s one of the biggest benefits of using virtual production.

Interior 3D Walkaround with Unreal Engine

Excited about real-time experience and interactive walkthrough, but also frustrated by complicated workflows and hours of unwrapping? Now it’s time to push doubts away! Epic Games has just introduced Unreal Studio plugin, a new tool to unite 3D and CAD software with Unreal Engine under one roof. This extension is bound to make life of 3D artists a lot easier and happier. Our senior CG visualizer Vasily Gushcha has tested its limits and is ready to share his own experience (spoiler: it’s gorgeous).

Installing Unreal Studio plugin

Plugin workflow and usability, known unreal studio issues, summing up unreal studio.

In this article, we will go through installation and workflow to potential issues you might encounter while creating virtual tours using Unreal Studio. Let’s get started without further ado!

To install Unreal Studio both into your Unreal Engine and 3ds Max just follow these easy steps. However, you are expected to already have the latest version of Unreal Engine (currently 4.19) and an active Epic Games account.

  • Sign up for the free beta on unrealengine.com . You will be provided with a link to download Unreal Studio and 3ds Max export plugin.
  • Once you have downloaded the extension, install it into default location. To make sure your subscription status became active, open the Epic Games Launcher and check the status in the left-hand corner.

subscription status of unreal studio plugin

  • To verify that Unreal Datasmith has been installed, you can click Plugins under the Engine Version. If you do not see the plugin listed, you can install it manually: go into Library tab, click Install to Engine and choose your current Unreal Engine Version.

Make sure you have installed Unreal Datasmith extension

  • Download and install Datasmith Exporter plugin. During Installation, it will detect the version of Max installed on your system. Indicate which 3ds Max version you want to install the plugin for.

checking the version of istalled 3D Studio Max

To make sure that the plugin is correctly installed, launch 3ds Max and export any object. Under the Save as type you should be able to see Unreal Datasmith (.UDATASMITH). As you can see, the process of installation is not that complicated. Once you have completed all these steps, you are ready to action!

Creating Unreal Studio project with Datasmith template

Datasmith toolkit presents many great advantages of export to Unreal Engine. First of all, it converts textures and materials, respects instances, adjusts the working unit scale and coordinates the system, pivot points, scene hierarchy and more. On top of that, it generates Lightmap UVs and converts grayscale bump maps to normal maps – all automatically. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Let’s take a closer look at the workflow process. Firstly, you need to create a project with Datasmith template. To do that, you need to launch Unreal, then head into New Project and select a Blank project inside of Unreal Studio tab. After that, you are ready to export from 3ds Max. As mentioned earlier, you can export an entire scene at once, but we found that exporting objects one by one gives you a better control of what is going on in your future walkaround project. For instance, let’s export a single sofa from our Loft Apartment project. Select the object you want to export and go into File – Export – Export Selected, choose .udatasmith format, give it a name and save into your project folder. Then, an Export window will appear to specify what should be included in the export file. Since we only need a selected object to be exported, we leave it as Selection and press OK. After that, head into Unreal Engine and select Import Datasmith button on the top panel. Next, select the file you recently exported and choose a location in your project where you would like to put the asset. It’s always a good practice to give your folders and assets proper names so that you don’t get lost in the project at the final stages. Finally, Datasmith will ask you what kind of content you want to import from your file. If it corresponds to your needs, just select Import. And here we go, our asset with proper materials has been successfully imported to Unreal! Last but not least, you need to set object’s Collision. It prevents your character from ‘going through’ the object while walking. The easiest way is to double click your Static mesh on Details panel, then scroll inside Collision and select Box Simplified Collision. After some fine-tuning and light baking, here is the final result inside the project.

Light distribution inside Unreal Studio plugin

Although Datasmith gives you a decent result exporting all of your assets, there are some things you should consider doing manually from time to time. The most common issue is lightmap errors caused by overlapping UVs and bad seams. Let’s find out how to fix them. Here we have a vase imported to Unreal, and you can clearly see that there is something wrong with light distribution. Since this vase has an uneven organic shape, Datasmith could not unwrap it properly. To control this aspect, you can open Static Mesh Editor and show UV Channel 1. This channel usually corresponds to a channel where lightmap is stored, and on the picture above we can see that this unwrapping is definitely unacceptable. This is the result of automatic mapping, that does a pretty good job most of the time, but when it comes to organic shapes like this, it isn’t able to put seams correctly. To do it properly, we are going to take this into 3ds Max and create our own custom lightmap UVs. Usually, we should do it with Unwrap UVW Modifier, but in this case a basic Cylindrical map would be enough. Just make sure that your map channel is set to two, since the first channel is usually reserved for texture map. It is going to give a much better look for lightmap: we’ve got a good cap on the bottom, a good seem along the side of the mesh, and that is already a better result than that of automatic mapping. Now, we will export it to Unreal and see how it will perform. Open it up in the Static Mesh Editor and go to the UV Channel 1 corresponding to Channel 2 from 3ds Max. Make sure this Channel 1 is specified for Lightmap Uvs: go to Lightmap Coordinate Index and set it to 1. Finally, our vase is looking nice and clean. Quick tip: Always make sure you have some padding around your UV charts: it will prevent overlapping and light bleeding artifacts. You can find more information about padding in official documentation .

Unreal Studio is a great tool that allows 3D artists to save a lot of time during preparation and exporting data to Unreal Engine. The time saved could be spend on perfecting artistic aspects like tweaking materials, setting up desired lightning and art-directing your walkthrough project in general.

Build a virtual world with Unreal Engine

Through this quick start guide on the Unreal Engine, we intend to walk designers through the procedure of creating any project in Unreal Engine 4. If everything is done right, we will create a 3D room similar to this picture:

virtual tour unreal engine

This tutorial will further help developers understand the following:

  • Navigation of view reports
  • Creating a new level
  • Placing and editing characters in levels
  • Building and running levels

Now, let’s start building the virtual world:

1. required setup.

Step1: Once you complete the Unreal Engine installation, a Project Browser will appear on the screen. You will find multiple development categories inside it under “ New Project Categories .” Based on your project type, choose a suitable development category. We will select Games as a category for this guide and click Next

virtual tour unreal engine

Step2: Now, move to the second page of the Project Browser and select the Blank template. Then, click Next .

virtual tour unreal engine

Step3: Visit the final page of the Browser, which will display various dropdown options. Select the Blueprint and complete the With Starter Content settings from this page. Additionally, choose the Folder Location, provide a suitable name for your project, and click the Next button.

virtual tour unreal engine

Step2: Navigating the Viewport

If all the project settings are correct, you will first notice Viewport in the Unreal Editor. The viewport is the space where you can perform all level construction using the assets and sample levels provided by default in the template project you selected earlier in this guide.

Step3: Creating a New level

Next, you need to create a new level to build and support the VR project’s gaming environment. Although there are many ways to create a new level, using the file menu options makes the development procedure easier because it lists various options for level selection.

1. Open the Unreal Editor, visit the File Menu options and open the New Level option.

2. When you click the New Level , a new dialog window will open window as shown below::

virtual tour unreal engine

The default level contains some of the most often used assets for level construction. In contrast, the empty Level contains no assets. For this guide, we will start from the beginning with a completely blank slate.

1. Select the empty level by clicking on it. Now, place actors in the empty level.

Actors in VR projects are elements such as geometry or lights. We will learn how to place these actors in the empty level in this step. We will cover the two most common means of placing actors in the level: Select Mode and Content Browser.

Once we complete all these steps, you will understand how to place actors in your levels and the methods of using them for your project’s environment.

Open the Place Actors panel on the left, open the Geometry category, and finally select the Box .

virtual tour unreal engine

2. Now drag the Box using left-click and place it into the Level Viewport.

virtual tour unreal engine

3. Open the Details panel located on the lower-right side of the editor’s window and set the Location and Rotation to 0.

4. Set the scale at 4x4x0.1 This dimension will support the creation of a 3D playground on which the gaming characters can walk around and play.

virtual tour unreal engine

5. Select the Lights tab from the Place Actors section and drag and drop a directional light on the floor.

6. Open the transition tool and drag the Z-Axis to the gizmo (widget), away from the floor’s surface.

7. Select and drag and drop Atmospheric Fog from the Visual Effect tab located inside the Place Actors panel. It will add a sky to the existing level and illuminate the level.

8. Open the Place Actors portal and select and drag and drop Player Start to the level.

virtual tour unreal engine

9. Click on the Volumes under the Place Actors panel. Now, select and drag-drop the Lightmass Importance Volume to the level. From here, you can control the lighting effects and scale the atmosphere, such as the Shadowing effect.

virtual tour unreal engine

10. Follow this step- Content > StarterContent > Props and drag drop SM_TableRound to the level.

virtual tour unreal engine

11. Again, follow this step- Content > StarterContent > Props and drag-drop SM_Chair to the level.

virtual tour unreal engine

12. Press E to see the Rotation tool and access it.

virtual tour unreal engine

You can also try other shortcuts to see the movement of the objects, such as the above chair. Add some lights, props, and objects to make your project more realistic and improve its usability.

Editing the Placed Actors

Once the various actors are placed into their levels, the next step is to edit their properties to provide them with enhanced customization, allowing you to select different settings and modify the actors’ properties as required. Follow the below steps:

Left-click on the Viewport and then select the Directional Light Actor .

Explore the Details panel located in the Light category and enable Atmosphere Sun Light from there.

Completing these two steps enables real-time change in the atmosphere, which corresponds to how you rotate the Light Actor. For instance, the sky color will change from sunrise to the daytime and the sunset. You can also change the Material from the Static Mesh Actors and make your project feature-rich and interesting.

Running the build process .

The “Preview” labels in the below image signify that the graphics, light, and overall scene you are viewing may differ from what you see in the final game. However, you can adjust the lighting quality and other functions according to your project’s requirements:

virtual tour unreal engine

Following are the steps to build the process:

1. Visit the Main Toolbar and click on the drop-down arrow next to the Build option.

2. Choose the Production setting from the Lighting Quality section. You can set the quality level to High , Medium , or Low according to the project type and specifications.

virtual tour unreal engine

3. Allow the build to finish. Once the process is done, you will get a clear view of the final look of your project.

virtual tour unreal engine

4. Click the Play button in the Main Toolbar to see your progress in the editor.

virtual tour unreal engine

With the build and the editor, you can quickly test the various aspects of your projects and perform common actions. For example, you can change the lighting effect to moonlight or the night scene or add an extra room.

Unreal Interior Virtual Tour

Hi everyone!

Finally i make a video for my unreal Sample scene. majority of models are from evermotion archinteriors but others are modeled with 3dsmax 2014 and marvelous designer. 30-50 fps in 1080p with 580GTX.

Impressive rain effects! Very well-made!

congratulations, really an amazing job ! THe stills looks fantastic (are they “original”? …no postproduction outside Unreale?)

My jaw officially dropped!!! This deserves to be showcased by EPIC. Can you tell us about your render time?

wowww! thanks guys:D really amazed by such a like this comments!

paoloverona: Yes, they are original…there are captured directly from 1080p video.

Wow, that’s awesome thanks for sharing!

Can you share a playable demo? I’d like to test the performance with my gtx 980.

as i said before this work is done just for fun! too see how much we can go with Unreal Engine 4 and scene is not optimized so that packaged project is 1.5 GB! as an example just wave sounds is 350 megabytes! by the way if i have time to optimize the scene i will inform you for sure;)

Looks incredible! Love love love your lighting. For camera-based flythroughs, I would suggest using the built in video export of Matinee for recording. I’ve never done Camtasia recording for the walking part, but the stuttering in the video is pretty annoying.

thx stephabon. Finally i created another video and i fixed that issue! Hope you Enjoy.

Yes Of course! But wait till tomorrow! I will share download link for Demo by tomorrow:D From there you can have the Footage if you mean that.

Hey guys. as you requested, link for this demo added to the first post. Enjoy your tour!

Very cool demo. I’ve just tested it. I’m getting 60-62 fps on my GTX 980. Only 2 things that bother me…is there no vertical synchro? I’m getting a lot of tearing. I also think the walk speed is a tad too slow. Otherwise, superb!

thnx. 1- vertical sinc: yes you are right! I dont know but i accidentally turn it off!!! just go to this folder: …/final/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor, and open GameUserSettings.ini and correct this line: bUseVSync=True. thnx for your close attention. 2- I dont like that kind of game speed walk-throughs for this archviz subject.

Heeeyyyy now, this looks great!

, do you know who is the architect/ where is this apartment? I like it quite a lot.

thnx Chance Ivey.

this is a scene from archinteriors 29. we just added a bedroom and bathroom!
