Long Branch is an oceanside city of 30,000 people (2019) in New Jersey . Visitors to Long Branch will enjoy the beautiful beachfront, the boardwalk, and the Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park. There is also a large selection of outstanding restaurants and a lively nightlife. Pier Village is the focus of most of the rebuilding and most tourist attractions.

The town of Long Branch is one of the largest cities on the Jersey Shore . From the period of the 1860s through the First World War, it was also the most glamorous. Long Branch started out as a resort town, including such names as Astor, Fisk, & Drexel – and even more notorious names such as Diamond Jim Brady and Lily Langtree. First Lady Mary Lincoln visited in 1861, but it was in 1869 that Long Branch had its first presidential visit by President Ulysses S. Grant. The President continued to visit every summer that he was president, a tradition followed by Presidents Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison, McKinley, and Wilson.

In 1870, a racetrack opened, which is still a main attraction today and later on casinos began opening up. After an attempt was made on President James Garfield’s life, he was brought to Long Branch in hopes of a recovery aided by the sea air. Indeed, a railroad spur from the main line to his house was built to make him more comfortable in his travels.

The 1920s was witness to the beginning of Long Branch’s decline as a summer destination. Gambling laws stopped many of the rich and famous from visiting. In addition storms eroded Long Branch’s beachfront. By the late 1960s, organized crime settled in Long Branch, further declining its image. Buildings and houses became run down, and many locals had to depend on welfare. The St. James Episcopal Church built in 1879, is where all seven presidents worshipped and is all that is left of what structures were built during that period. It has since been renamed Church of the Presidents and is located at 1260 Ocean Avenue.

Long Branch is now enjoying an amazing second coming. High-rise condos have replaced many of the old summer bungalows.

Getting around Long Branch is like getting around most any other city. Public Transportation is available but not widely used. When at Pier Village or the boardwalk, walking or bicycle riding is the only form of transportation.

There is plenty to do in Long Branch that will suit your entire group's needs. From fine dining to fun in the sun, Long Branch can offer it. If you have some fisherman in you, not far from Long Branch is the 'Big Mohawk Party Boat' in the Jersey Shore town of Belmar . It offers fishing for New Jersey Fluke, New Jersey Blackfish, and other varieties of fish.

The 7 Presidents Oceanfront Park , a facility of the Monmouth County Park System, features: 38 acres including an activity center, a boating launch, fishing, a playground, swimming, sand volleyball, pavilion with snack bar, and restrooms. Admission and parking fees are charged from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Admission is free during the rest of the year. The park is open every day from 8AM to dusk.

12. Brighton Bar

The former main singer of the hard rock band Chronic Sick Greg Macolino, is the establishment’s proprietor. The Bar is frequented compared to CBGB.

In 2008, Long Branch saw the first development of Pier Village and its neighbourhood.

The upscale neighbourhood of Long Branch, known as Pier Village, is home to more than 30 boutique shops, several restaurants, and coastal homes.

There are stores, eateries, a hotel, apartments, and a promenade within the beach and community, where the Naval Weapons Station Earle was initially located.

15. Asbury Park Convention Hall

A short 15-minute drive from Long Branch, you’ll find the Asbury Park Convention Hall on the Asbury Park Boardwalk.

It was constructed between 1928-1930 and functioned as the first venue for sporting events, conferences, and other gatherings.

Asbury Park, having over 3,500-seat interior show ballroom located along the oceanfront, is an incredible structure.

The structure underwent renovation around 2004, hosting several well-known musicians, including Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, the Beach Boys, and others.

16. Sirena Ristorante

Located in Pier Village in Long Branch, New Jersey, The Sirena Ristorante is a classy neighborhood Italian restaurant with stunning seaside views.

The pet fee is $150 per pet per stay. If you stay for one weekend that $150 if you stay for 1 day still $150. This is outrageous! Not a very pet friendly place at all and the pet friendly rooms are not human friendly!

Map: 4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes New Jersey

Shake intensity

A light, 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck in New Jersey on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake was felt across the New York City metropolitan area, and from Philadelphia to Boston.

The temblor happened at 10:23 a.m. Eastern about 4 miles north of Whitehouse Station, N.J., data from the agency shows.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake's reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Aftershocks in the region

At 5:59 p.m. Eastern on Friday, a light aftershock with a magnitude of 3.8 struck near Gladstone, New Jersey, according to U.S.G.S. (The agency initially gave the quake a preliminary magnitude of 4.0.)

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

Quakes and aftershocks within 100 miles

Aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the first earthquake. These events can be of equal or larger magnitude to the initial earthquake, and they can continue to affect already damaged locations.

How this quake compares

The U.S.G.S. has logged 188 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or greater within a 250-mile radius of New York City since 1957. In that timeframe, only seven have had a magnitude at or above 4.5. Today’s quake had the third-highest magnitude in the available data.

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface. 

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

Visit Long Branch

The Grand Entry Hall

It was from this southern facing door that visitors, guests and family entered Long Branch. The view visitors have today is very similar to the way Long Branch looked, after 1842. Before the 1840s, Long Branch did not have the Greek-revival elements it has today (columns, cornice, door frames, etc.). Those elements were added long after the first owner. The clock and chest beside one another in this hall are original pieces recently re-acquired as a part of our refurnishing efforts.

A Proper Parlor

Socializing, music, drinking, and meetings – they all occurred here in Long Branch’s parlor. Today the parlor is being restored and refurnished to its 1850s appearance. The pocket doors are original to that period and were originally faux-grained mahogany. They allowed this room to be shut off from the dining room while slaves prepared and cleared that space. Prior to the Civil War the Nelson family who owned Long Branch had several domestic slaves who catered to the family’s needs.

Enjoy this modern museum exhibit which explores the full history of our house and plantation. Historically this room was used for storage and kitchen items.

Dining at Long Branch

This is Long Branch's 19th century dining room. Flanked by a striking mahogany sideboard and ornate stove, this room was where the Nelson’s entertained and impressed. A set of stairs behind the closed door led to the winter kitchen downstairs.

Back Staircase

In this space, the work of Long Branch was completed. This staircase, painted in its original ca. 1830s colors, was where slaves completed their work, outside of the view of the Nelson’s and any visitors. Including this staircase in the house was something architect Benjamin Latrobe suggested was necessary.

A Simple Sitting Space

According to furnishing records, this space was sparse – a few chairs, pine tables and chests. Based on research, historians believe this was used as a simple sitting space. Today, the space offers unparalleled views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to our south. You are looking at the chain of mountains that becomes Shenandoah National Park. Looking up, you can see the third floor with space for temporary slave quarters and the stairs to the belvedere platform atop the house. The third floor is not open to the public.

Historic Bedchamber

Historically, this was one of five bedrooms in the home. Eventually, this space will be furnished to re-create a 19th century bedroom. The room currently displays the exhibit, "History Detectives: Uncovering 200 Years of History at Long Branch Plantation."

The Isaacs' Hunt Room

While the rest of the house is being restored and refurnished to its 19 th century appearance, this room has been purposely left as the last owner Harry Isaacs’ refurnished it in the 1980s. Termed his “Hunt Room,” the wallpaper was added by Harry and the furnishings are his – including the paintings and trophies, a testament to his lifelong involvement in horse racing.
