Pokemon Go: Everything You Need To Know About Referrals

Get a friend into Pokemon Go and you'll both have access to some fantastic rewards.

Quick Links

How the pokemon go referral system works, pokemon go referral quests and milestone rewards.

If you're hoping to get your friends into playing Pokemon Go with you (and earn some neat prizes in the process), you'll be pleased to know that Niantic has introduced a referral program. By referring your friends and getting them into the game (or back into it, if they haven't played in a while), you'll both receive some rewards after they complete some quests.

Pokemon Go: April Raid Guide

We've got all the details on the Pokemon Go Referral Program here, including how it works and all the quest rewards. You'll find everything you need to know about the friend referral rewards.

Updated November 5, 2023, by Sean Murray: Looking for Pokemon Go referral rewards? You've come to the right place. We've updated this guide with improved formatting and more breakout tips to make the referral process a bit easier. We've also given this guide more links to other helpful Pokemon Go topics.

What Is The Pokemon Go Referral System?

The referral program has been implemented worldwide and is meant to help you get people into playing Pokemon Go . These can be completely new players or people who haven't played in 90 days or more.

How Do I Get A Friend Referral Code In Pokemon GO?

It's pretty easy to find a referral code if you're looking to join the game again. Niantic's intention is most likely that you'll invite your friends if you're an existing player, or that you'll use a friend's code if they play and you're starting new or returning to the game.

However, many people post their codes online. Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook are popular places to find and join a Pokemon Go community, with many of them operating at the local level in different towns, cities, and regions.

Always be careful when messaging strangers online or using their code.

Also, if you're the new/returning player, remember that your referrer will gain rewards when you complete quests . This won't affect you directly, but it's something to keep in mind.

How To Use The Referral System In Pokemon Go

The program itself is pretty simple. All you need to do to refer a friend is open up your friends list in the app, click "invite," and send your code to them.

If the person you've sent your code to is a returning player, they just need to input it in the friends list menu . New players can do it in one of two ways: input it on the friends menu like a returning player, or use it during the sign-up process .

If a new player doesn't input the code in the signup process, they'll only have a 72-hour window to input it on the friends menu before the chance expires.

Once someone inputs your code, you'll need to make sure you accept the automatic friend request that is sent to you . The two of you will need to remain friends until you've received all the rewards , or you will lose access to them.

Once you're friends, you'll see the list of rewards and quests on each other's page from your own game.

For a successful referral, the new (or returning) player will receive 100 Poke Balls , and the referrer will receive 50 Stardust .

How Do I Claim Milestone Rewards In Pokemon GO?

At first, finding your referral quests and rewards can be a bit confusing. Unlike almost every other type of quest in the game, these won't be found in the quests menu .

Instead, navigate to the friend page for your friend (whether you're the referrer or new/returning player). Scroll down and you'll see the quests there . You can claim the rewards for any completed quests here, too.

Pokemon Go: Spotlight Hour Guide

Once the referral process is complete and the two of you are friends, the new or returning player will have access to a handful of quests that are designed to help reacquaint them with the mechanics and content in the game.

Only the new/returning player will need to complete the quests. The existing player/referrer does not need to do anything.

However, even though the referrer will not be able to complete the quests, they will still receive rewards .

Here's a list of all the quests , and the rewards that each player will receive for their completion.

Bonus Quests

After completing the full list of Referral quests, there is a set of bonus quests for the new/returning player to complete .

Pokémon GO referrals now live – How to use your referral codes

Michelle Mannering

After a few weeks of testing in Australia, Pokémon GO referrals are now live globally . This new Pokémon GO referral program offers trainers rewards for referring friends. The program provides in-game items for both the referred trainer and the one providing the code. There are some pretty neat rewards for referrals too.

Refer a friend in Pokémon GO

You can refer a friend in Pokémon GO if it’s their first time signing up to the game. If your friend has taken a break from Pokémon GO, they can also use your referral code. Returning players must have been logged out of Pokémon GO for at least 90 days, which provides some incentive to jump back in.

How to use your referral code

When logged into Pokémon GO, tap your Avatar in the bottom left corner of the screen, then follow these steps:

  • Navigate to your friends tab
  • Tap “INVITE”
  • Note your referral code
  • Share your referral code with a friend.

You can also share referral codes directly to social media by clicking “Share referral code.” As soon as someone enters your code, they will receive 100 Pokéballs to get them started. You as the referring trainer will also receive a reward, 50 Stardust to set you on your way.

Pokémon referral rewards

There’s a good number of other tasks to complete as part of the Pokémon GO referral program, and some welcome items you’ll earn as a result. Players who have used your code will need to hit these milestones to then gain the associated rewards.

  • Defeat three Team GO Rocket Grunts – Pokémon encounter
  • Complete 25 Field Research Tasks – Intense ×1
  • Purify 20 Shadow Pokémon – Rare Candy ×10
  • Defeat a Team GO Rocket Leader – Mega Energy ×50 (this appears to be Charizard Mega Energy)
  • Reach Great Buddy with a Pokémon – Pokémon encounter
  • Reach Ultra Buddy with a Pokémon – Super incubator ×5
  • Visit PokéStops 30 days in a row – Pokémon encounter
  • Trade Pokémon five times – Pidgey stickers ×10
  • Catch 50 Pokémon – Pokémon encounter
  • Win three raids – Premium raid pass ×1
  • Make two new friends – Pikachu stickers ×10
  • Hatch three eggs – Pokémon encounter
  • Evolve 100 Pokémon – Super incubator ×1
  • Hatch 20 Eggs – Pokémon encounter
  • Win a Raid – Pokémon encounter.

Have you started using your referral code? What mystery Pokémon have you encountered? While you’re waiting patiently for your rewards to come in, make sure you’re up to date on all the latest season changes .

Referral System

Referral System is a game element in Pokémon GO launched in March 30 th , 2021. [1] Trainer can refer another Trainer whether if it is a new Trainer or a returning Trainer. A returning Trainer must have been logged out for at least 90 days in order to get referred. Once the Trainer is referred, the referring Trainer gets a friend request from the Trainer who is referred, so they can earn rewards together. The Trainers each get 50 Stardust for getting referred, and the referred Trainer gets 100 Poké Balls . The code does not have to be input immediately upon first logging in, they have up to 72 hours (3 days) from that moment to do so.

Here is the complete list of progression and rewards for both the referrer and the new/returning player.

Pokémon Go Daily Bonus rewards for streaks, first catch and Pokéstop of each day

Here's how much XP and Stardust you get for playing Pokémon Go each day.

Pokémon Go daily bonuses reward you for regularly playing the game and using its basic mechanics.

All you need to do is catch a Pokémon everyday to build a catch streak and visit a PokéStop everyday to build a spin streak in order to get bonus XP and Stardust. You get even more rewards if you do this every day for an entire week.

This Pokémon Go guide will cover everything you need to know about daily streaks.

On this page:

Pokémon Go daily bonus rewards and how streaks work

Other things to know about pokémon go daily bonuses and streaks.

visit pokestops 30 days in a row

For the first Pokémon you catch and the first PokéStop you spin each day, you'll earn some additional XP and Stardust .

It doesn't matter what Pokémon or PokéStop you spin - it can be the same you visit every day - as you'll still earn the reward and streak for that day. If you do this seven days in a row, you'll be rewarded with an even larger bonus.

On top of this, for the seven day Pokéstop streak, you will receive a Special Evolution Item - such as King's Rock , Sun Stone , Up-Grade , Dragon Scale or Metal Coat

The amount of XP and Stardust you received for your daily streaks used to be lower, but developer Niantic upped these numbers during lockdown in March 2020 to make playing the game easier from home.

The table below shows the amount of XP, Stardust and other bonuses currently rewarded for each day of your daily catch and spin streak:

The World of Wonders season has come to Pokémon Go, giving you the chance to catch Poipole . The World of Wonders: Taken Over event is currently running, bringing the It's a Rocket World special research quest with it. Don't forget to try out Routes , Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon , fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases .

Here is some additional information about catching Pokémon and spinning PokéStops in Pokémon Go to help you get the most out of playing the game:

  • Spinning a Gym Photo Disk also counts as spinning a Pokéstop. Just tap the Poké Ball symbol in the bottom right-hand corner after selecting a Gym to switch to the Photo Disk screen
  • Using a Lucky Egg will double any XP earned for 30 minutes, while activating a Star Piece rewards 50 percent more Stardust for 30 minutes. This means you can get even more XP and Stardust from your daily streaks when these items are active. We recommend only using these items if you plan to do a lot of activities that award XP or Stardust to get the most out of them

visit pokestops 30 days in a row

  • Daily bonus eligibility will reset at 12am local time, so you won't have to wait a full 24 hours after you last caught a Pokémon or spun a PokéStop to continue your streak
  • You can see what catch or spin streak you are currently on by naigating to the Today View tab. This is found by tapping the binoculars symbol on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, and selecting 'Today' from the top tabs. Scroll down to just past your PokéCoins number to see your streaks
  • Make sure you don't have a full item bag when spinning a PokéStop , otherwise you can't continue the streak or get any items. You can buy additional space by purchasing Item Bag upgrades from the in-game shop for 200 PokéCoins
  • The daily bonus you receive is in addition to the rewards you get for catching Pokémon or visiting PokéStops - so expect to add (at least) 100 XP for catching a Pokémon and 50 XP for spinning a PokéStop. Using Curveballs will reward even more XP, dependent on if you did a nice, great, or excellent throw
  • Hatching an Egg will not count as catching a Pokémon , so make sure you actually encounter them in the wild to continue your catch streak
  • You can also get medals for catching Pokémon, visiting Pokéstops, and more, giving you extra incentive to keep catching and spinning every day

Good luck with building those catch and spin streaks in Pokémon Go!

Pokémon Go referral program: Referral Codes, rewards, and more

Pokemon Go Referral Hero

Pokémon Go first launched in 2016, but plenty of people have never tried the hit mobile game or played for a while and then lost interest. If anyone you know falls into those camps, Niantic wants to help you get them playing with you. Following a successful beta test in Australia, Niantic launched a new Pokémon Go referral program on March 30 to help trainers team up and share adventures. Here's everything you need to know to start earning rewards together. If you want to be a really great friend, you can even welcome them with one of the best Pokémon Go accessories .

How do you use the Pokémon Go referral program?

Pokemon Go Referral Screen

Pokémon Go's referral program builds on the social elements that already exist within the game, which let players share friend codes to exchange gifts, trade Pokémon, and team up in raids. To join the Pokémon Go referral program, you'll need to get your referral code by taping Invite on the game's Friends screen. You can share that code with a new player or anyone who hasn't played Pokémon Go in at least 90 days.

That player will need to input your referral code either when they first sign up for the game or later via their Friends screen. The referred player will receive 100 PokéBalls just for using the code, and you'll get 50 Stardust. You'll both then begin receiving rewards as they reach milestones within the game. That provides a nice incentive for you to help them become better trainers!

What rewards do you earn from the Pokémon Go referral program?

As your friend plays Pokémon Go, you'll both earn rewards when they've completed a variety of tasks requiring them to master various aspects of the game. That means you'll have a strong incentive to help them try features like raid battles , fighting Team GO Rocket , and purifying shadow Pokémon .

Questions about the Pokémon Go referral program?

Do you have any questions about the Pokémon Go referral program or any other aspects of Pokémon Go? Any tips to help new and returning trainers? Let us know in the comments section, and keep checking back for all the latest Pokémon Go news and guides.

Pokemon go referral code system live - all rewards, locations and criteria.

Here are the details about the new POGO Referral system.

Recently, Niantic announced a referral system for their incredibly popular AR hit, Pokemon GO .

The news came hot off the Season of Legends announcement and confirmed that players who referred friends to the game could earn a bunch of great rewards.

That system has now gone live, and here are all the details you need to know about it, including all the rewards you can receive.

  • ULTRA LEAGUE - Pokemon GO: Best Ultra League Team for GO Battle League Season 7

Where is the new system live?

Unfortunately, as Niantic do, the system is set to only be live in specific locations around the world. This time out, lucky players in Australia will be the guinea pigs testing the new service out.

What are the rewards and the criteria?

Each player will receive their own unique referral code. This can then be shared with players to invite them to Pokemon GO . Should a friend then sign up, using this code, both players will be eligible for rewards. Players can also use their referral code to invite players back to the game who have been absent for more than 90 days. New players will then be able to complete a range of challenges that will unlock themself and their referrer a bunch of rewards.

The rewards are as follows (Thanks u/ZoeTwoDotss on Reddit):

  • Defeat 3 Team GO Rocket Grunts - Pokemon Encounter
  • Catch 1000 Pokemon - 3x Incense
  • Earn 50 Candies walking with your buddy - 30x Rare Candies
  • Defeat a Team GO Rocket Leader - 50x Mega Energy
  • Give your buddy 50 treats - Pokemon Encounter
  • Win 20 raids - 5x Super Incubator
  • Visit PokeStops 30 days in a row - Pokemon Encounter
  • Trade Pokemon 5 Times - 10x Pidgey Stickers
  • Catch 50 Pokemon - Pokemon Encounter
  • Win 3 Raids - 1x Premium Raid Pass
  • Make 2 new friends - 10x Pikachu Stickers
  • Hatch 3 Eggs - Pokemon Encounter
  • Make 100 Nice Throws - 2x Super Incubator
  • Hatch 20 Eggs - Pokemon Encounter
  • Win a raid - Pokemon Encounter

What's next for the Pokemon GO Referral System?

Niantic will likely assess how well it works, how many people are using it, if it gets abused and how fair the rewards are. Following that, should it be successful, it will be rolled out around the world, usually starting with all players at level 40 and above.

PokéStops

PokéStop Basics

Items: To obtain items from a PokéStop or Gym, check out Niantic's starter guide ! PokéStops and Gyms restock every 5 minutes.

XP: Spinning a charged PokéStop also gets you 50 XP in most cases (XP from spinning Gyms is a little more complex and is covered in our article on Gym Overview and Strategy ). Since the Gym rework of 2017, Pokestops a trainer has not spun before have a white ring around the Photodisc. This ring is a handy way for trainers to see places they haven't been yet, and, more importantly, a source of decent XP. Each never-before-visited Pokestop grants 250XP for its first spin (instead of the 50XP normally gained for spinning a PokéStop), and the white ring then disappears.

Base on drop rates data collected by trainers noted below, Gamepress estimates the current Pokestop drop rate at:

Drop Rate Research:

PokéStops and Gyms are mostly based on locations used in Niantic's previous location-based game, Ingress. These locations are reported by players to be of artistic or cultural value—basically just something of an interesting nature. Submissions for these kinds of locations in Ingress was closed roughly 8 months before the release of Pokémon GO in preparation for launching the game, but was re-opened later. New PokeStops and Gyms are periodically added to Pokemon GO based on these changes in Ingress. (PokéStops and Gyms also sometimes are removed from Pokemon GO.)

Some PokéStops and Gyms, though, are "sponsored" locations that are not found in Ingress and are unique to Pokemon GO; these sponsored PokéStops and Gyms are based on partnership agreements made with various companies (e.g., Starbucks, Sprint, and Boost Mobile locations in the U.S.A., McDonald's, Aeon, and Softbank in Japan; Unibail-Rodamco in Europe; etc.). Depending on the nature of the agreement and to avoid marketing to minors, though, trainers under the age of 13 may not be able to see sponsored locations as PokéStops or Gyms in their apps.

Discarding Items

You can throw away items by clicking the trash can symbol to the right of the item name. Tap and hold the "+" button to rapidly increase the quantity to discard.

Depending on your playstyle and level, you'll have different surpluses and deficiencies of items. In general:

  • Discard weaker Potions  - Unless you're constantly fighting against gyms or raiding, you're not going to need that many basic Potions, especially once you gain access to potions that heal a Pokemon completely in one use
  • Discard Evolution items -  Although some found them very rare initially, with the guaranteed item on a 7th-day spin, many trainers might discard items. (If you find that Evolution Item RNG is not in your favor, you could consider keeping an Up-grade—since Porygon-Z is due in Generation 4, and you might find a better Porygon to evolve. Further in the distance, the Sun Stone might be needed again to evolve 3 Pokemon in Generations 5 and 6.)
  • Discard Poké Balls * - Only if you really must (or once you gain access to better balls). Pokémon become much harder to catch as you rise in trainer level due to higher average wild Pokémon level encounters, taking roughly up to several Poké Balls to capture. Also, if you ever go to a high Pokémon density region, you can easily use over 250 Poké Balls in the span of a few hours. The most important caveat is if you use a Pokemon GO Plus device, which can only use Poké Balls (the device cannot use Great Balls or Ultra Balls, so many Plus users may prefer to dispose of Great Balls and even Ultra Balls).
  • Discard Revives  - A Pokémon knocked out of a Gym or defeated in a raid battle stays at 0 HP until it is revived. Discarding Revives depends on how many Revives you go through daily. (In very desperate situations, if a fainted Pokemon is not already at level 40, you can power it up once or twice, which "gives" the Pokemon one HP, thus "saving" you from using a Revive—but costing you candy and Stardust).

Things to take the time to use, not discard:

  • Incense - If you buy Special Boxes , you may find you have a lot of Incense, but it's  worth your while to use them (or at least have a plan to use them before buying a box). Check out our article on Incense.
  • Berries - Don't forget that the basic Berries (Razz, Nanab, and Pinap) are not just used on the capture screens, they're also potential sources of both stardust, candy, and gym badge XP. Feed Pokemon from your team in gyms regularly, so you won't be tempted to dump them in a pinch.

Tips and Tricks

  • While items from Photodisc spins appear in bubbles that can be "popped"/tapped individually, it's also possible to just hit the "X" at the bottom of the screen to collect all the items at once.
  • Trainers who are at or near item cap who spin a Gym or Pokestop will still get all the items and exceed the limit, but trainers who are already above the limit, will not be able to spin a PokéStop or Gym for any items or XP.
  • Even if the PokéStop or Gym fails to load or says "please try again later", you usually still collect the items - check your journal to confirm. The exception is if you receive the "please try again later" message when you are moving too fast. In that case, you will be able to spin the PokéStop or Gym when you slow down.
  • Going critical.   If you spin 10 unique PokéStops or Gyms in a row with no more than 10 minutes between stops , the tenth PokéStop or Gym will go critical. It'll be guaranteed to drop at least 6 items and give 100 XP.
  • Daily bonus. Your first PokéStop or Gym spin of the day will give you an extra 500 XP and at least 6 items.
  • Streak bonus. Spinning at least one PokéStop or Gym every day for seven days in a row, gives 2,500 XP on the 7th day and an even larger amount of items. While Evolution Items are rare drops for any PokéStop or Gym spin, at least one Evolution Item is guaranteed on the 7th-day-streak spin.
  • Stacking bonuses. Gyms that a trainer has higher gym badges at are prime targets for first-daily spins, especially on a 7th-day streak spin, since they already grant bonus items (for more information on Gym badges, Gym XP, and bonus items, see our Gym Overview and Strategy Guide ).
  • Leveling help.   Because every new PokéStop grants 250XP on the first spin, one strategy is to find but leave a PokéStop-dense region alone until a double-XP event is announced. During the event, use Lucky Eggs while you spin the new stops and evolve (better yet, use a Pokemon GO Plus to spin while you walk and evolve). The stacked event and lucky-egg bonuses give 1000XP per new PokéStop spin.
