An Enchanted Time at Water Safari – Old Forge’s Awesome Water Park

Last updated on August 11, 2021.

It’s no secret that the Adirondacks is one of my absolute favorite places on this planet. If you’ve been following along on Instagram , you’ll see it’s been full of mountain views lately! Every summer growing up my parents would take my brother and I camping up at Old Forge. Some of our favorite childhood memories were made in days at Enchanted Forest Water Safari exploring the storybook area with our best friends. In the evenings we’d return to our campsite to watch out for bears (no joke). Water Safari is not only the biggest water park in New York state, but it’s rated one of the best in the country . It’s also one of TripAdvisor’s top choices! Intrigued? I bet you are. Find out what makes Water Safari in Old Forge one of the best summer destinations.

Me at Enchanted Forest

This article was originally published in 2019. In 2021, Enchanted Forest Water Safari invited me to come back to check out the new water slides and update the article. Thanks, Water Safari!

How to Save Money at Water Safari in Old Forge

Purchase your ticket at a local business.

By buying your ticket ahead of time, you’ll be able to save over $7 off your admission! You can find pre-sale tickets at local grocery stores like Price Chopper and Wegmans.

Get more than a day’s visit with the Siesta Pass

If you arrive at the park after 3pm (or 2pm on the days they close earlier), you can pay admission for the remainder of the day and get a FREE pass to return again the next day . Best. News. Ever. My recommendation? Arrive after that cut-off and enjoy all of the dry rides. Then, return in the morning to spend the day by the pools sunbathing and getting soaked on the wet rides! No worrying about changing your clothes or having enough time to fit it all in.

Book a Stay ‘N Play Package

The Water Safari Resort has two accommodations available. If you’re looking to spend a few days in Old Forge (which I highly recommend), check out their Stay ‘N Play Packages . Guests who stay at either of the properties receive discount tickets to the park.

First up is the Water’s Edge Inn across the street from the park. Guests receive free continental breakfast, have access to an indoor pool and sauna, and can relax on the lakefront property in the evening. Plus, you can actually walk across the street to the park – it’s super convenient!

A little down the road you’ll find Old Forge KOA , where I always camped as a kid. There are a variety of tent sites, cabins, and cottages to choose from depending on your style. The resort also offers a shuttle bus to take you to and from the park, so you don’t need to worry about parking.

Join the Paul Bunyan Club

While you’re at it, make sure to take your photo with Paul Bunyan. Yes, it may be cheesy. Yes, a group of us 30-somethings looked like a giddy bunch of children getting our photos taken. But I don’t regret it for one minute! As soon as you enter the park you’ll see the giant statue of Paul Bunyan, and it is the must-have photo opportunity of the park.

For an extra $4 with your first visit this year, you can join the Paul Bunyan Club . As a member, you’ll receive half-off your admission for the rest of the season. Half-price tickets must be purchased at the admission gate.

Get a season pass

If you plan on visiting on at least 3 different days during the summer, it’s worth it to get yourself a season pass. That will get you unlimited admission for the season and 10% off food and drinks in the park.

What Is There to Do at Water Safari in Old Forge?

Before you do anything at the park, get yourself a splash card . These new cards act like your cash inside the park, so you don’t have to worry about carrying around actual cash or a wallet. Plus, the cards are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them on the wet rides.

Second, if you want to take photos and videos on the water rides, grab a waterproof phone pouch from any of the gift shops in the park. They seriously work wonders!

Lastly, if you brought a bunch of stuff into the park with you – and chances are you’ve got at least a bag with a change of clothes and towels – get a locker. That way you can stash your stuff in a locker and go enjoy the rides.

The Dry Rides

My favorite? The classic Skyride – take the ride up and get relaxing views of the whole park! But you’ll also find the traditional ones like the bumper cars and tilt-o-whirl. The wet rides are what really shine! (Also why the siesta pass is a great option!)

The Wet Rides

This is where Water Safari does it best! Believe it or not, there are 33 heated water wides ! The most popular is definitely “Curse of the Silverback”, a group ride where your tube circles around a giant funnel like a toilet bowl. And then – drop! For a relaxing day, you can choose from two different lazy rivers – the “Log Jammer” and “Safari River Expeditions”. Plus, there’s everything in between! Races, wave pools, single riders, partner and group tubes… Enough to fill your whole day!

While the park was closed in 2020, they built three new water rides . The lines may be long, but they are definitely worth it.

  • Serengeti Stampede replaced the old, basic racing slide. The new, colorful slides have bumps and turns to make them a lot more fun. And the new mats have handles, making them easier to hold onto.
  • Mamba Strike is a 285-foot drop water slide that loops around the Serengeti Stampede tubes. This slide has guests stand on a platform at the top of the slide that is dropped beneath them. An adrenaline rush for sure!
  • Killermanjaro is back and better than ever. The speed slide features one long 207-foot drop.

Relive your childhood with Storybook Lane

Another one of my favorite childhood memories is visiting all the nursery rhyme recreations! And you can bet that I did that again on my most recent visit. From Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage to Hansel & Gretel’s gingerbread house, they are over 20 stories recreated along a path through the woods in the park. Meant for the children to visit in awe, but reminiscent for the adults as you listen to the stories play.

Friends at Water Safari

Family Circus

Twice daily you can watch the circus show. From the standard jugglers and trapeze artists, you’ll also find more unique acts like performing dogs and the famous motorcycle cage rider. It’s a great chance to catch a break from all the adrenaline of the day. Grab a snack and find a seat while you enjoy the show.

Play with the animals

Are you an animal lover like me? Then check out Paul’s Barnyard to play with and feed the sheep, goats, pigs, and birds that are there. I recommend going in between some of the dry rides!

Water Safari Circus

Where to Eat at Water Safari

Water Safari is one of the most lenient places when it comes to bringing in outside food and beverages. BUT, why worry about lugging around your cooler and finding a place to store it while you’re in the water? There are plenty of restaurants and snack stands throughout the park. So there are plenty of options to please any palate.

Options include pizza, nachos, burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and more. A staff favorite is the Bosco sticks at the pizza shack. Get two cheese-filled breadsticks served with marinara for just $3. New this year, you’ll find ice cream nachos, monster milkshakes, and hot honey chicken sandwiches.

And to answer your most burning question – yes, there are alcoholic drinks for adults!

Water Safari Restaurants

Other Things to Do in Old Forge

While you’re visiting Old Forge, be sure to get the most out of your stay.

Calypso’s Cove

Enchanted Forest Water Safari claims it’s “Where the fun never stops!” And that’s true! Even outside the park, you can continue your adventure – next door at Calypso’s Cove . From mini golf and batting cages, to an arcade, go karts, and more, you’re sure to have a blast.

Slicker’s Restaurant

After a long day at the water park, you’re sure to be hungry! Luckily, there’s a hometown favorite restaurant across the street – Slickers. Their pizza and chicken wings are fantastic. Seriously. So. Darn. Good. Get yourself some garlic parm wings and you’ll be in heaven.

Slickers Restaurant

Adirondack Dog House

If you’re really pinching your pennies for this trip, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Adirondack Dog House . Hot dogs with all sorts of toppings, french fries and onion rings? Delicious. Classic. And cheap. Score!

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

What’s dinner without a beer? A visit to Fulton Chain Craft Brewery is a must. Adirondack-themed and dog-friendly, you won’t want to miss drinking their famous “Go Fluff Yourself” beer. Weird name? Yes. Delicious? Heck yes. It’s a peanut butter marshmallow beer that has become very popular in Central New York – for good reason!

The brewery was recently expanded to make a larger taproom. All of their brew tanks are named after the lakes in the Fulton Chain of Lakes throughout the Adirondacks. They also have pictures of the lakes on them, embracing their location.

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

Wisk Baking Co

You know I’m a sucker for a good coffee shop and bakery. Wisk isn’t that. Wisk Baking Co is an incredible coffee shop and bakery! Featuring a variety of delicious confections, the desserts are almost too beautiful to eat! Almost.

You’ll have a hard time choosing from the bagels, croissants, muffins, and more. Get yourself a slice of cake to go. I’d also recommend the “ADK Campfire” crepe, made with Nutella, Fluff, and graham crackers!

Have you visited Water Safari in Old Forge? I want to hear about it!

Paul Bunyan.

In addition to the Paul Bunyan, the park features a museum about the history of the property -- complete with newspaper articles and brochures dating to 1950. The museum is free with park admission. Today, it is the largest water park in New York.

The "old" park is still going strong, with story book characters young children love and will remember for a long time. My children were amazed by all the little houses you could look into (some even enter) -- as I was as a child. My favorite was Peter's wife in a huge pumpkin (shell) house. A petting zoo and "Circus" are small but also fun. A mini train circles the park and is always a "must do."

The park is more known for its water park now, but admittance price is for both parks together. There are some old "carnival" type rides, including toddler rides, available, but not the main attraction. Paul Bunyan is now located inside the park just past the main gate. The park also has mini golf, bumper boats, batting cages, arcade/pizza shop and a very nice go kart track that is for older kids and adults (younger kids are allowed to ride).

New Ownership Brings Policy Changes at Enchanted Forest Water Safari

Innovative Attraction Management (IAM) of Florida has taken the reins at Enchanted Forest Water Safari and its related properties, including the nearby Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Park, Old Forge Camping Resort, and Water’s Edge Inn.

Stricter Regulations on Outside Food and Beverages

One of the significant changes  visitors can expect revolves around bringing outside food and beverages into the park. The new ownership will enforce stricter regulations regarding bringing in outside food and drinks. Under the new regime, only season-ticket holders and groups renting pavilions will be allowed to bring food in coolers and those coolers are not to exceed 60 quarts.

Exceptions for Dietary Requirements and Designated Picnic Areas

IAM President, Cathy Dunlap, shared with WKTV that exceptions might be made for visitors with specific dietary requirements. The company is currently finalizing the language of the policy to address those needs. To cater to visitors used to enjoying meals in their cars or tailgating, Enchanted Forest Water Safari plans to establish designated picnic areas in the parking lot.

Changes in Season Passes and Discounted Admissions

Season passes will offer park entry 15 minutes earlier than the general public, along with various discounts. Additionally, IAM has decided to discontinue the Paul Bunyan Club Membership, which previously granted discounted admission after purchasing a membership at a nominal fee. According to Adirondack Explorer , regular ticket prices will increase by $2.00. There's no word yet on whether or not visitors will still be able to buy a late-day admission ticket and get in free with the same ticket the next day.

98.1 The Hawk logo

New Food Vendors and Pricing

IAM is also in the process of securing new food vendors while keeping some of the traditional favorites. Concerning food pricing, Dunlap mentioned to WKTV that they are working on finalizing the costs based on vendor rates. Currently, the pricing is expected to align with what visitors might pay at a fast-food establishment outside the park.

Convenient Cash Conversion with Splash Cash

Visitors will also have the option to convert their cash into Splash Cash within the park. This system allows guests to wear a wristband loaded with Splash Cash to eliminate the need to carry physical cash and reduce the risk of losing money or belongings while enjoying the park's attractions.

The Continuity of Leadership and Operations

Katie Wojdyla and Kelly Greene, representing the Noonan family ( who owned the park for nearly 50 years before this most recent sale ), tell Adirondack Explorer that they will continue their roles at Enchanted Forest Water Safari for the "foreseeable future." With Greene as vice president and Wojdyla heading marketing, the Noonan family's connection to the park remains intact. Wojdyla emphasized that the park name will stay the same, and the current staff will be kept, ensuring a sense of familiarity and continuity for guests.

  • 7 Cutest Small Towns In The Adirondack Mountains To Visit In 2024

The Adirondack Mountains are a mountain range located in upstate New York and are incredibly popular as a spot for cottaging, hiking, boating, and other outdoor-related activities. Even the popular wooden lounging chairs, seen on outdoor decks across the country, are named after them. One look at this unique region, and you will see why. A stunning mountain range runs through the area, with its biggest peak, Mount Marcy, reaching a height of 5,344 feet, and several forests and parks accompany them. Due to the hilly terrain, it is difficult for any large cities to be established here, but there are many small towns that are packed with charm that those from the big cities to the south, like New York City, seek out during all four seasons of the year.

Plan your next visit for 2024 to one of these seven cutest small towns in the Adirondacks.

Lake Placid

The Lake Placid Ski Lift in autumn.

Lake Placid is a quintessential Adirondack town that combines the charm of a small village with an interesting history associated with the Winter Olympics . As the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid is now a sought-after hub for sports and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those who like downhill and Nordic skiing and snowboarding. You can even visit the Olympic Center, where the "Miracle on Ice" occurred, and take a bobsled ride at the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex.

Beyond its Olympic legacy, Lake Placid is surrounded by stunning natural scenery with Mirror Lake at its heart. This calm body of water is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply walking around its well-maintained trail (which wraps around the whole lake). The downtown area is quite lively. Take a stroll down its street for a variety of dining options, from casual cafés to upscale restaurants, and visit local art galleries to appreciate the region's creativity.

For serious hikers, the surrounding mountains provide ample opportunities, like the hike up Whiteface Mountain, which offers a panoramic view of the Adirondacks.

Saranac Lake

Saranac Lake, New York, in the Adirondack Mountains during fall.

Saranac Lake is another worthwhile but slightly less popular lake town located a short drive from Lake Placid, offering a more laid-back atmosphere while still boasting a good array of activities and attractions. Historically known for its tuberculosis sanatoriums in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town has preserved much of its older structure, making it a delightful place for history enthusiasts. Bring your camera as you walk the streets in town.

Walking through downtown, you can check out the many locally-owned shops, art galleries, and cafés. The Left Bank Cafe is a great spot to grab a coffee or a bite to eat with views of the Saranac River. Saranac Lake is also known to be a welcoming home for artists, with local artists often displaying their works in various venues like NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery, among a few others.

Outdoor lovers will find plenty to do around Saranac Lake, with access to several lakes and hiking trails. Canoeing or kayaking on the Saranac River is a peaceful activity, while Baker Mountain has a short but rewarding hike with wonderful views along the way. The close by Lake Flower is another perfect place for leisurely walks or picnics by the water.

Ticonderoga

Interior view of Fort Ticonderoga, on the shores of Lake Champlain in Ticonderoga, New York.

Ticonderoga is strategically located between Lake George and Lake Champlain, making it a good kick-off point for boaters or anyone looking to spend a weekend by the water. Historically, it played a significant role in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution , making it a great place to learn about this region's significance to America's storied past. The best landmark to visit for this is Fort Ticonderoga , a restored 18th-century fort where you can witness reenactments, explore the museum, and learn about the site's historical importance.

Interested in learning a bit about show business too? The Star Trek Original Series Set Tour is a unique attraction downtown, providing a detailed recreation of the iconic show's set, which brings in fans from all over.

Those looking to spend their time in nature are in luck in Ticonderoga. The La Chute River runs through town and is lined with walking paths and even a small waterfall. The nearby Adirondack Mountains have numerous accessible hiking trails, and both Lake George and Lake Champlain contain launches for boating, fishing, and water sports.

Entrance to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, located in Old Forge, New York.

Old Forge sits at the western edge of the Adirondacks. The town's central location in the Fulton Chain of Lakes makes it a great base for boating and fishing enthusiasts. Old Forge has nearby access to several notable mountains, with trails suitable for all levels of hikers. Bald Mountain is a popular hike with a fire tower at the summit, providing panoramic views of the lakes and forests below. In the winter, Old Forge transforms into a snowmobiling paradise, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails.

In downtown Old Forge, you can find everything from local crafts and souvenirs to hearty meals at cozy diners. The town also features the historic Strand Theatre, a charming cinema that has been showing films since the 1920s. It is also home to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, the largest water park in New York, which is a big draw for families during the summer months.

Wooden boat docks floating on the choppy water of Fourth Lake, located near the town of Inlet, New York.

Inlet is a tiny town of around 355 residents located just east of Old Forge, at the edge of Fourth Lake. It’s a popular spot for those who are really trying to escape the big city and find peace in the vast outdoors of the Adirondacks. Despite its size, many useful amenities can be found here, with restaurants, outfitters, and even hotels being available. The Screamen Eagle Pizza is a favorite among locals and visitors, known for its crispy thin-crust pizza.

Inlet is a fantastic destination for water-based activities. Fourth Lake is great for boating, fishing, and swimming, with a public beach that's perfect for families. The Fulton Chain of Lakes is accessible from Inlet, allowing for extended canoeing and kayaking trips. During the summer, the town has a variety of festivals and events, including arts and crafts shows and live music in Arrowhead Park.

In terms of hiking, you can explore the Black Bear Mountain Trail, a moderate hike with stunning views at the top, or Rocky Mountain, a shorter trail that offers a quick ascent to a panoramic vista. In winter, Inlet transforms popular places for snowmobilers, with miles of maintained trails within reach. Inlet's combination of natural beauty and small-town charm makes it a delightful place to visit in 2024.

North Creek

Main Street in North Creek, New York.

North Creek is the home of Gore Mountain, a popular ski resort for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. During the summer, Gore Mountain provides scenic gondola rides and mountain biking trails.

Downtown North Creek is rich in history, with places to visit like the North Creek Depot Museum, which showcases exhibits relating to railroading in the Adirondacks. It is a definite highlight, celebrating the town's railway heritage and its connection to President Theodore Roosevelt 's famous "midnight ride." It is also recommended to see the Tannery Pond Community Center, which hosts art exhibits, concerts, and theatrical performances.

North Creek is a gateway to the Hudson River Gorge too, where you can find exciting whitewater rafting trips. Hiking opportunities abound as well, with nearby trails leading to beautiful vistas and secluded spots in the forests around town and lining the gorge.

Keene Valley

Keene Valley Library in Keene Valley, New York.

Keene Valley is in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks region in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park . Visitors come for its breathtaking landscapes and many camping and hiking opportunities. It’s a haven for hikers, with easy access to some of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the whole region, including the popular Cascade Mountain and Giant Mountain trails. Don't forget about nearby Mount Marcy too, the highest peak in all of New York state.

Keene Valley is perhaps the best place to stay as an ideal starting point for exploring the Adirondack wilderness. The hamlet itself has a laidback rural vibe, with local businesses catering mainly to outdoor enthusiasts. The Mountaineer, a long-established outdoor gear shop, is a great place to stock up on hiking equipment and get expert advice. Keene Valley also has a few cozy cafés and eateries, where you can enjoy a meal while taking in the scenic surroundings. For an easy walk near town, visit the Roaring Brook Falls Trail, leading to a stunning waterfall that cascades over a sheer cliff.

Explore The Adirondacks' Cutest Towns This Weekend

From Lake Placid's Olympic legacy to Saranac Lake's artistic charm, each town in the Adirondack Mountains has a strong appeal, whether outdoor adventure, cultural events, or a simple downtown stroll amongst historic buildings. Ticonderoga's historical significance, Old Forge's family-friendly attractions, Inlet's tranquil lakeside, North Creek's outdoor activities, and Keene Valley's hiking trails create diverse experiences that easily fill a weekend visit. Visiting these towns in 2024 ensures a memorable trip filled with natural beauty and local flavor in the legendary Adirondacks.

Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report- May 2, 2024

Greater niagara region.

Frank Campbell

John Van Hoff and Kevin Guenther

By 10:30 a.m., the trio had hooked into over 30 salmon and boated 20 of them. Their target water was 50 to 90 feet of water from Fort Niagara to Wilson, prime area for the spring derby. The spoon bite was hot, placing riggers 40 to 60 feet down and dipsy divers out 90 to 140 feet on a 3 setting. They enjoyed multiple double headers. Their biggest king was 17 pounds and biggest lake trout 20 pounds. The spring action in on. In Olcott, Karen Evarts at The Boat Doctors and Tackle Barn reports great fishing there, too. It has been a good mix of salmon and trout inside of 100 feet of water. Chinook salmon have been in the top 25 feet of water, but it will be changing. It has been an all-spoon bite there, too. The creeks have been muddy, but a few trout have been caught still. Mixed reports on perch fishing in Wilson and Olcott. Now that pike season is open, look for them to be available in both harbors.

In the Lower Niagara River, action has been decent. Water color is near perfect according to Capt. Joe Srouji of Angler Edge. Wind directions can change drastically daily, and that can make a huge difference. The river is still producing trout from Devil’s Hole to the Niagara Bar. Live emeralds or golden shiners are both taking fish. The river is a great option for smaller boats that can’t get out on the lake on windy, wavy days, says Srouji. As for the Niagara bar, it was 46 degrees earlier this week. Fish are stacked everywhere. Pulling Kwikfish or MagLips has been great for catching kings, cohos, lakers, and browns. In Devil’s Hole, white bass turned on the past weekend. There are still lake trout, steelhead, and bass available for shore casters.

In the upper river, Matt Wilson of Lewiston targeted bass last weekend when Lake Erie was too rough. He fished from Black Rock to the Huntley plant and bass were scattered. Big bass for the day was 5-pound, 12-ounce reeled in by Brian Barton of Tonawanda. They were using swimbaits, jerkbaits, and drop shot set ups. They hit the east river when the wind kicked up and Barton connected on two brown trout. Wilson emphasized electronics and he was high on a new Garmin unit with side scan. Side scan is an important tool this time of year to help find pre-spawn areas where chunk rock goes into the sand. When you find those locations, mark it on your GPS waypoints with date and water temperature. It helps him big time.

Wayne County Fishing Update

Lake Ontario

The last day in April has the kings swimming in 90 to 200 fow. You can start your day at 5 am and troll for the browns before the sun shuts them down.

Then head deeper for spring kings. They have been hitting spoons, flies, and stickbaits.

For the competitors, don’t forget the Sodus Pro-Am and the LOC Spring Derby which starts this Friday May 3rd and runs until May 12th.

The perch have spawned and are scattered in both Port and Sodus Bays. Their main bait …shad… has not been found in abundance in both bays.

Try the east side of the Port Bay channel in 20 fow and use 2-inch chartreuse rubber bait. In Sodus Bay fish the northern end near the islands and east of the Sodus Bay channel.

Tomorrow (May 1st) is the opening day for walleye and pike. Although the walleye are difficult to find in Sodus, try the structured water between the islands.

The hot spot for pike has been on the east side of LeRoy Island. Cast out Cleos or other bright spoons or use pike minnows straight down. You can also fish the shallow water in front of Skipper’s Restaurant.

Limits for northern pike are 5 fish 18 inch minimum. Limits for walleye are 5 fish 15 inch minimum.

Launch sites for Sodus: Next to the Coast Guard Station (till Memorial Day) and Bay Bridge Sport Shop. The water level in Sodus is still low, however it is rising slowly. Check out the Margaretta site to see if you can launch there. It’s on your right on Route 14 just past Martin’s Marina.

Launch sites for Port Bay: Barrier bar road at the north end of West Port Bay Road and the south end DEC site.

Anglers were fishing Widewaters early last Sunday. That area of the canal is never drained and is the hotspot for crappies, sunnies, and bluegills. It is also the place to hook huge largemouth bass in season. It’s also the perfect place for kayak fishing. The wind is usually not a factor, and the water is always calm. Launch at the Widewaters County Park just west of Newark on Route 31.

The bass season starts June 15th if you wish to keep your catch. Make sure the fish are 12 inches and the limit is five fish.

The official opening of the canal is May 17. 2024.

Anyone underway in a boat less than 21 feet in length anytime between November 1 and May 1 must wear a securely fastened life jacket.

Bait for fishing is available on the south end of Sodus at Davenports and Bay Bridge Sport Shop . On Port Bay Jarvis Bait Farm is open on Brown Road. The signs are on East Port Bay Road at the junction of Brown Road. Toadz Bait is near the end of West Port Bay Road.

Notable Freshwater Fishing Regulation Changes

The following list offers a summary of the most notable fishing regulation changes resulting from the adopted rulemakings described above.

  • New statewide regulation for rainbow trout, brown trout, and splake in lakes and ponds. The season will now be open year-round, with a five-fish daily limit, any size, with a “no more than two longer than 12 inches” harvest rule.
  • Statewide Atlantic salmon regulations will now allow for a year-round open season.
  • Ice fishing is permitted on all waters in New York unless specifically prohibited with the exception of Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Warren, and Washington counties where previous rules remain.
  • May 1 – Walleye, Northern Pike, Pickerel, and Tiger Muskellunge.
  • June 1 – Muskellunge.  (Note that in 2022, DEC will allow for the fishing of muskellunge beginning the last Saturday in May to accommodate previously planned fishing trips); and
  • June 15 – Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.
  • A five-fish daily walleye limit in Oneida Lake.
  • A new regulation to limit the growth of the walleye population in Skaneateles Lake. No daily possession limit; 12-inch minimum size limit, open year-round.
  • The statewide sunfish daily harvest limit has been reduced from 50 to 25 fish: and
  • The statewide minimum size limit for crappie has been increased from nine inches to ten inches.

Fishing has been very good the past week. Browns have been on the shoreline out to 20 feet. Flight lines color to color lead shallow divers have been taking fish.

The best baits have been standard size spoons such as “Doctor,” “UV NBK,” “Blue Dolphin,” “Purple,” and “Die Hard.” Good stick baits have been “Baby Bass,” “Black and Silver” and “Jailbreak.”

If you’re looking for Salmon head to deeper water, 60 to 200 feet has been holding kings. They’ve been taken from 25 to 80 feet down

  • Slide divers from 60 to 120’ out
  • Downrigger’s from 25 to 80 feet
  • 4- 10 colors
  • Spoons: “Die Hard,” “Black Widow,” “Gin and Tonic,” and “Lance 2 Face”
  • Flashes and flies have been taking a few fish too

Lake Ontario – Mexico

Fishing at Mexico has been great. The brown bite has been decent, but when lacking, the salmon bite has made up for it.

Anglers are finding Salmon in 60 to 120‘ off the high rocks. The best baits and depth are very similar to Oswego.

Democrats retain upstate New York congressional seat in special election

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Democratic state Sen. Timothy Kennedy won a special election Tuesday for the New York congressional seat vacated by Democrat Brian Higgins.

Kennedy easily defeated Republican Gary Dickson for the upstate New York seat, helped by a 2-to-1 Democratic registration advantage in the district, which includes Buffalo, Niagara Falls and several suburbs.

Kennedy has been in the state Senate since 2011. Describing Washington as “chaotic and dysfunctional,” he said he would focus in Congress on reproductive rights, immigration and stronger gun laws like those passed in New York after a 2022 mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket.

“We need to elect pro-democracy, anti-MAGA candidates all around the country this November,” Kennedy said in a victory speech, “and it starts here in this room in Buffalo, New York, tonight.”

Registration wasn’t Kennedy’s only advantage. The Democrat raised $1.7 million as of April 10, compared with Dickson’s $35,430 total, according to campaign finance reports . Kennedy spent just over $1 million in the off-season election, compared with $21,000 for Dickson as the candidates worked to remind voters to go to the polls.

Kennedy will serve in Congress for the rest of the year. He is on the ballot, along with Republican attorney Anthony Marecki, for the general election. On Tuesday, former town supervisor Nate McMurray, who planned to challenge Kennedy in a Democratic primary in June, said in a social media post that elections officials had removed him from the ballot because of insufficient signatures.

Earlier this year, the GOP’s slim House majority was narrowed in a closely contested Long Island-area special election that followed New York Republican George Santos’ expulsion from Congress. That race, won by Democrat Tom Suozzi, was viewed as a test of the parties’ general election strategies on immigration and abortion.

Dickson, a retired FBI special agent, acknowledged the challenges of running in the upstate district when he announced his candidacy at the end of February, saying he was in the race to give voters a choice. He said he supports Trump as the Republican nominee for president, while describing his own politics as “more towards the center.”

After conceding the race, Dickson told supporters he had no regrets about running.

Voting took place with Trump on trial in New York City in the first criminal trial of a former American president and the first of four prosecutions of Trump to reach a jury.

Saugerties, N.Y. — Sleeping on Saugerties, globetrotters? It is time to add this charming waterside community in Upstate New York to your summer bucket list.

Saugerties, a small Catskills town perched on the banks of the Hudson River, has been named one of the 10 best small towns in the Northeast by USA Today’s 10Best . The town ranked No. 6 on the list bookended by Gettysburg and Ohiopyle, both nestled in Pennsylvania.

The town that fewer than 20,000 people call home offers a “quaint escape with an artsy spirit”, 10Best wrote in its roundup.

“Attracting a lively New York City crowd, especially on weekends, the town’s Main Street is a treasure trove of antique shops, art galleries, a bookstore, as well as an array of casual and upscale restaurants,” the travel website wrote.

The town boasts a small but mighty arts scene. It is home to the Orpheum Theatre, a vintage movie theater that’s run by Upstate Films and has earned the support of Liam Neeson and other actors. It also hosts art and craft stores like the Jane St. Art Center and Bravo Original Ceramic Designs.

Along with serving up artsy vibes and memorable eateries, Saugerties is famed for its proximity to hiking trails and waterways — including Esopus Creek and the Hudson River. The iconic Saugerties Lighthouse is a popular draw for hikers and photographers.

Saugerties can count celebrities among its visitors: Crews filmed scenes for the HBO reboot “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” at the Orpheum in Saugerties, while celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay visited two eateries — Love Bites Cafe and Bosco’s Mercantile — for a show.

Child saved after nearly drowning at Six Flags waterpark in Upstate New York

Upstate NY water parks offer cool fun

Queensbury, N.Y. — When she was pulled from the lazy river inside an Upstate New York water park last weekend, the 5-year-old girl wasn’t breathing, according to reports.

Stacy Brayton, a paramedic, was visiting the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark in Queensbury with her young son on Saturday when she saw people carry a child from the Tak-It-Eesi-Creek area, WNYT NewsChannel 13 reported . Although she wasn’t on duty, she rushed to help.

When they could not find a pulse, Brayton told NewsChannel 13 she and others — including the waterpark’s lifeguard and EMT team — started to give the child CPR. After about five minutes worth of compressions, she said the girl started to breathe on her own.

“By the time the ambulance got there, she was conscious and crying,” Brayton, who works for Medcor, told NewsChannel 13. “So then when everybody came in, I just said to them, ‘she’s breathing, she’s breathing,’ because that’s the first thing you want to hear as a first responder.”

The child from Hudson was airlifted by LifeNet to an Albany hospital, where the Warren County Sheriff’s Office reported she is recovering, according to the Hudson Valley Post .

The Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark is on the edge of the Adirondacks at 89 Six Flags Drive in Queensbury, Warren County.

Harvey Weinstein hospitalized after his return to New York from upstate prison

FILE - Harvey Weinstein arrives at a Manhattan courthouse as jury deliberations continue in his rape trial in New York, on Feb. 24, 2020. Weinstein will appear in a New York City court on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, according to the Manhattan district attorney's office.

NEW YORK — Harvey Weinstein's lawyer said Saturday that the onetime movie mogul has been hospitalized for a battery of tests after his return to New York City following an appeals court ruling nullifying his 2020 rape conviction.

Attorney Arthur Aidala said Weinstein was moved to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after his arrival on Friday to city jails.

"They examined him and sent him to Bellevue. It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. He's got a lot of problems. He's getting all kinds of tests. He's somewhat of a train wreck health wise," Aidala said.

A message left with the hospital was not immediately returned Saturday.

Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, said only that Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue. Thomas Mailey, a spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, said Weinstein was turned over to the city's Department of Correction pursuant to the appeals ruling. Weinstein had been housed at the Mohawk Correctional Facility, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Albany.

On Thursday, the New York Court of Appeals vacated his conviction after concluding that a trial judge permitted jurors to see and hear too much evidence not directly related to the charges he faced. It also erased his 23-year prison sentence and ordered a retrial.

Prosecutors said they intend to retry him on charges that he forcibly performed oral sex on a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and raped an aspiring actor in 2013.

Weinstein remained in custody after the appeals ruling because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

For some time, Weinstein has been ailing with a variety of afflictions, including cardiac issues, diabetes, sleep apnea and eye problems.

Aidala said he spoke to Weinstein on Friday afternoon after he was in transit to New York City from an upstate jail less than 24 hours after the appeals ruling, which was released Thursday morning.

He said his client's ailments are physical, adding that mentally he is "sharp as a tack. Feet are firmly planted on the ground."

The lawyer said it usually takes state corrections and prisons officials a week or two to arrange to transport a prisoner.

"He was not treated well. They refused to give him even a sip of water, no food, no bathroom break," Aidala said. "He's a 72-year-old sickly man."

Mailey, the state corrections spokesperson, had no comment when Aidala's remarks about Weinstein's treatment were read to him over the phone.

Aidala said he was told that Bellevue doctors planned to run a lot of tests on Weinstein before he can be returned to the Rikers Island jail complex.

The lawyer said he's scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday. He added that he plans to tell a judge when Weinstein goes to court on Wednesday in Manhattan that a retrial should occur after Labor Day.
