Primarily, start your sightseeing by visiting the world-famous Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. This is arguably one of the most prominent attractions in the state of Kerala. You could see White-rumped vulture, Red-headed vulture, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Blue Bearded Bee-eater, and a lot more! Take a binocular to observe these animals and birds as the view is quite stunning. You can also explore the sanctuary through the elephant rides. The elephant rides are organized by the sanctuary itself.

If you are looking to relax amidst a thunderous waterfall and lush green forest, this is where you should be. Hence, ensure this is a part of your Wayanad itinerary. 4 Days in Wayanad Itinerary – Things To Do & Places to Visit in Wayanad
- February 29, 2024
Wayanad is one of my favorite destinations in Kerala. It makes me feel very close to nature! The forest and tea plantations accompany you throughout the trip. Wayanad has always been a rejuvenation for me!
In the past 1.5 years, I have been to Kerala thrice. Once to Kumarakom & twice to Wayanad! Based on my experiences in Wayanad, I have created this Wayanad itinerary for 4 days. I have combined both my trips to Wanayad in this itinerary, shortlisting the best attractions and not including the below-average destinations.
By following this Wayanad itinerary, you will enjoy Wayanad at its best, irrespective of whether you are traveling with your friends, family, or better half! Being an adventure enthusiast and nature lover, I have given prominence to such attractions in this Wayanad itinerary.
Along with recommended attractions in Wayanad, I have also recommended some restaurants and accommodation options in this Wayanad itinerary for 4 days. To pick attractions from Wayanad, you can read this blog of mine: Places to visit in Wayanad
Before moving to the day-wise itinerary I would like to suggest a couple of accommodations in Wayanad where I stayed. During my 1st trip to Wayanad, I stayed at Mountain Dew Homestay in Kalpetta. A quaint homestay located amidst dense forests, staying at Mountain Dew Homestay was a memorable experience. If you are a fan of nature and authentic Kerala cuisine, this homestay will not disappoint you. The tariff is around Rs 3,000 per night for one very spacious room.
The 2nd time I visited Wayanad, I stayed at Fia’s residency in Sulthan Bathery . A supreme budget property, Fia’s residency wouldn’t cater to your room service needs. However, given the rates, it shouldn’t be a concern. We booked a 2 BHK apartment in the residency for Rs 4,000. It could accommodate 15 people! We were 9 friends and per night per head cost amounted for just Rs 450! That’s one amazing deal!
You can choose to stay either at Sulthan Bathery or Kalpetta. The distance between these two destinations is roughly 23 KMs. Hence, it wouldn’t really matter where you stay as some attractions are close to the former and others are in proximity to the latter.
Day 1: Banasura Sagar Dam – Banasuramala Meenmutty Falls
Assuming you leave in the morning from Bangalore or a city nearby, you will reach around 1-2 pm. Even if you are traveling by an overnight bus, on the 1st day, just let Wayanad grow on you. Take a walk in the lanes, discover interesting food joints, and have a peek at the local life.
If you are in Sultan Bathery, you can have lunch at Wilton Restaurant. The north Indian food here is surprisingly good. You can also savor authentic Kerala cuisine here like beef chilly. In Sulthan Bathery, to fight your hunger woes at late night, you can look for the Green Palace residency hotel. There is a joint there that serves delectable food and juices. My personal favorite was the Mango juice!
After having lunch, you can continue this Wayanad itinerary and head towards Banasura Sagar Dam . The largest Earth water dam in India, Banasura Sagar Dam will be your highlight in this first day of Wayanad itinerary. The vast water body will leave you in awe and the sunset will add brilliance to your experience. There is not much to do around, but to revel in the beauty of landscapes and enchanting forms of nature. However, there is boating available if the season is right.
You can also visit Banasuramala Meenmutty Falls which is very close to Banasura Sagar Dam. The falls do not have much force and height. But, there is a natural pool where you can take a dip and relax. Ideal if you are traveling with kids.
Call a day early to wear off today’s tiredness and gear up for the Chembra peak trek the next day.
Day 2: Chembra Peak – Karapuzha Dam ( Map )
Day 2 in this Wayanad itinerary will cover Chembra Peak & Karapuzha Dam. Chembra Peak takes the better part of your day and hence, not many attractions are combined with Chembra Peak today.
Start the day early and have a light breakfast to get energized for the Chembra peak trek. The trek takes 2-3 hours to complete and you can dedicate time till 2-3 pm for the Chembra peak trek. For my detailed experience, you can read my Chembra Peak trek blog post. The heart-shaped lake is the main attraction of the Chembra Peak trek.
After the trek, you can head towards Karapuzha Dam . A smaller dam compared to Banasura Dam, Karapuzha sees lesser tourists and you will feel closer to nature here. The road to reach karapuzha dam is a bit tricky so be prepared for some bumpy ride.
End your Day 2 with a relaxing dinner after visiting Karapuzha Dam. On day 3, the Wayanad Itinerary will cover interesting waterfalls.
Day 3: Edakkal Caves – Soochipara Waterfalls – Meenmutty Waterfalls ( Map )
Start Day 3 of your Wayanad Itinerary by visiting Edakkal Caves . The entry to the caves starts at 8 am and I would recommend visiting these caves as soon as possible to avoid peak traffic. Being a popular attraction, Edakkal caves attract a lot of tourists, and long queues start forming around 10 am. The timings are from 8 am to 2 pm for issuing tickets.
Edakkal caves are best known for the ancient wall paintings & art ingrained in the caves. The caves are surrounded by lush green ambiance and give you a perfect backdrop to travel back in time when art and nature were nurtured together.
After Edakkal caves, this 3rd day of the Wayanad itinerary will take you on an interesting trail of waterfalls. Soochipara & Meenmutty waterfalls are the best waterfalls in Wayanad and neither of them is worth missing. However, in the pre-monsoon season, you might not be able to witness the full prowess of these waterfalls. But, you can surely take a dip here.
Soochipara Waterfalls ( Source )
Both the waterfalls require a 2 KM trek to reach the spot. But, the hike is completely worth it and you will surely enjoy spending time at these waterfalls.
Day 4: Kuruvadweep Island
On this last day of your Wayanad itinerary, let’s keep the schedule relaxed. Instead of trekking and hiking, let’s introduce bamboo sailing! Yes, Kuruvadweep, as the name suggests, is a river island that provides bountiful views of pure nature. A placid stream flows gently, pacing playfully through rocks and sliding over pebbles. Spend some quality time with your friends and family here.
To reach the interior portions of Kuruvadweep island , you need to park your car near the entrance and opt for a bamboo raft sailing. The bamboo raft will help you to cross the river and reach the island. There are smaller water bodies in the island once you navigate through the main river. Kuruvadweep can be an interesting part of your Wayanad itinerary.
There are not many activities worth including in this Wayanad itinerary. But, you can surely get a memorable experience of staying with nature, devoid of artificial & concrete structures around.
After spending half a day here, you can proceed back and return home while reminiscing the alluring memories you just created in Wayanad!
I hope you liked this itinerary. I have not mentioned some attractions which were too crowded or too mainstream. For e.g, I have not included Pookat Lake in this Wayanad itinerary because this lake was just as mainstream as any other hill station lake in India. There were long queues for everything, popcorn sellers swarming around, and endless lines of cars trying to find parking. Not really a pleasant experience for me.
Have you been to Wayanad? Is there any attraction you would like me to add here? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!

4 day Wayanad itinerary | Wayanad travel guide
I’ve visited Kerala five times, but this was my first trip to the tea plantations region of Kerala. We were visiting Wayanad in the summer to escape the city heat. Wayanad had great weather, cool and pleasant, to soak in the beauty of the tea gardens. But that’s not all – there was more we did! Bookmark this 4-day Wayanad itinerary on how we spent our time there.
Table of Contents
Day 1 Wayanad itinerary: Sprawling tea plantations in Vythiri
On our first day, after checking in, we kept it light and easy with a short hike around our homestay at the foothills of Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. We walked past banana, guava and wild coffee plantations and followed the marks left by an elephant wandering on this side of the jungle the previous night.
After lunch, we took a Thar jeep ride to venture deeper into the rural land and discovered endless tea plantations that stretched as far as our eyes could see. The lush green carpets of tea leaves were a breath-taking sight, and we couldn’t resist prancing around the tea gardens, spending hours here. A little ahead, we stumbled upon an abandoned British planter’s bungalow, its weathered walls whispering tales of a bygone era. As the day drew to a close, we returned to our homestay to a lovely homecooked meal of Prawns stew with appam.
Day 2 Wayanad itinerary: An Adventure-day at 900 Kandi
From Vythiri, we checked out, towards Sulthan Bathery in the South Wayanad district. Along the way, we made a stop at 900 Kandi. The plan was to take the rugged jeep ride to reach the glass bridge or skywalk at the top of the hill. While the jeep ride was thrilling (and neck-breaking), the glass skywalk was underwhelming, overcrowded and worth skipping.
From there, we checked into our hotel in Sulthan Bathery after a two hour drive and rested the night.
Day 3 Wayanad itinerary: Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and Edakkal Caves
On this day, there was a mix of history and wildlife. We booked ourselves on the morning jeep safari inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (also Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary). This region shares the forest with Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai and Karnataka’s Bandipur Sanctuary, making it an ideal place to spot Asian Elephants in the wild.
Next, we headed to Edakkal caves. Perched on Ambukuthi Hills, these caves offer a fascinating glimpse into a Neolithic settlement. It reminded me of Yana Caves in North Karnataka. Edakkal can be crowded on weekends, which may not be a great experience to immerse yourself in the history of this place. Also, prepare to climb some stairs to reach the caves.
Day 4 Wayanad itinerary: Ziplining through tea plantations, Banasura Dam and Karlad Lake
On the last day, after checking out from our hotel, we utilized our time to do a few more activities as we had the rental car to carry our luggage.
We started with Karlad Lake, which was okay. Instead, you should check out Pookode Lake, which is larger and better. There is no need to visit both lakes.
Next, we visited the Banasura Dam – the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam offers a great view of the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River with the Banasura hills in the background.
The best, however, was yet to come! Our last stop was Meppadi, where we signed up for ziplining in Wayanad’s tea gardens. It was a great way to witness this stunning landscape from a different perspective and appreciate Wayanad’s natural beauty.
With a touch of sadness, we finally bid farewell to Wayanad, as we headed back to Kozhikode. Since we were continuing towards Gokarna, we drove to the Kozhikode railway station for our overnight train (Gandhidham Express) to Kumta.
Where to stay in Wayanad?
You’ll find some excellent hotels in Wayanad , although they might seem slightly expensive compared to other locations because it is a popular tourist destination, especially during summer.
We stayed at Club Mahindra’s affiliate, Vythiri Village Resort in Wayanad in the north district. You can check out Club Mahindra reviews online before booking!
Another good homestay is Wild Courtyard Vythiri . It offers some great views of the Chembra Peak and home-cooked local food.
We also stayed at Thejas Resorts in the Sulthan Bathery area, south of Wayanad district. This area is closer to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Edakkal Caves. Thejas was a beautiful boutique hotel with olden Kerala-style architecture and a buffet breakfast fit for a king. It is centrally located in the heart of the city and yet away from the bustle.
Local food to try in Wayanad
We enjoyed the food in Wayanad – from puttu and kadala curry to appam and prawn stew, idli and dosas. We also ate Meen (fish) biryani and beef parotta at a local restaurant in Kalpetta.
I also highly recommend trying Chatti Choru – a Wayanad-style rice pot with fish and meat gravies, and pappadum.
You should also definitely visit Wilton Restaurant in Sulthan Bathery or Lakkidi – we ate some excellent rabbit pepper fry with parotta. This place is quite popular as personalities like Mamooty and Rahul Gandhi have visited here.
Lastly, don’t forget to buy some hot tapioca chips to take home.
Top travel tips for Wayanad
- We took a flight from Mumbai to Kozhikode after comparing prices on Skyscanner. You can also check cheaper flight options to Kannur , equidistant from Wayanad – 3 hours drive.
- We took a car rental for the entire duration of our Wayanad trip. It is the best recommended option for travellers since public transport in Wayanad is not easy to navigate, and places to visit are far and scattered. Uber and Ola are not available.
- If you want to keep one location as your base for your stay in Wayanad, I suggest Vythiri because the tea plantations and most activities are in that area, whereas Sulthan Bathery is more developed as a city.
- If you have time on hand, also visit the Honey Museum. We stopped here on our last day – it was very informative. Of course, you can also buy some local honey to take home. Along the way, there’s a tea factory and museum for a quick stop for tea.
- If you have an extra day, visit Kuruvadweep island – a cluster of islets in the Kabini River – it is known for its untouched landscape. Kuruvadweep Island will take an entire day, so account for that time in your itinerary.
- To save money, you can club some sightseeing like Banasura Dam, Karlad Lake and the Honey Museum on your last day before leaving Wayanad, as they are along the same route, instead of making a separate visit.
- Carry comfortable shoes for the small hikes and prancing around the tea gardens.
That’s it! Hope this 4-day Wayanad itinerary is helpful in your planning. Have a great trip to Wayanad.

9:00 am - Departure from Kozhikode Railway Station
A serene road meanders through the Ghats of Wayanad
Start your Wayanad adventure from the Kozhikode railway station. After your arrival, you can easily find a taxi or take a bus to reach The Hosteller Wayanad your base for the day. As you travel, be sure to look out of your window and soak in the breathtaking views of the Western Ghats as well as tea and coffee estates. Don't forget to capture these views with your camera, as they make for perfect photographs for you to add to your Instagram feed.
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #1: Opt for local transportation options like buses or shared taxis to reach your destination as it will help you save on transportation costs.
11:30 am - Check-in at The Hosteller
The Hosteller Wayanad
Upon your arrival at The Hosteller, proceed with the contactless check-in at our Glu and make your way to our in-house cafe, Unbox, where you can enjoy a delightful brekkie. While sipping on a cup of freshly brewed coffee, take in the breathtaking views of the mountains and lake from your room's window, and perhaps indulge in a refreshing swim in our pool if you want.
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #2: Consider booking a dormitory room at The Hosteller. Dorms are a great option for a budget-friendly trip, offering the chance to meet fellow travelers and engage in interesting conversations and shared experiences.
2:00 pm - Explore Pookode Lake
Boating bliss at Pookode Lake
After refueling, it's time to set out and explore the stunning Pookode Lake, which is located just a 5-minute walk from The Hosteller. This scenic freshwater lake is surrounded by evergreen forests and mountain slopes, making it a perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature. You can take a leisurely walk around the lake, hire a pedal boat or rowboat, or enjoy a fish spa session.
Kayaks rest on the edge of a Pookode lake
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #3: Pedal boats are usually cheaper than rowboats, and they provide a unique experience of exploring the lake. Consider sharing the ride with fellow travelers. Prices for pedal boats are ₹ 100 for 2 seats and ₹ 350 for rowboats.
4:30 pm - Lakkidi Viewpoint
View of the serpentine ghat road from Lakkidi viewpoint on the Kozhikode - Mysore - Kollegal Highway
Your adventure continues as you head to Lakkidi Viewpoint, a short 10-minute drive from Pookode Lake. Once you reach the viewpoint you will be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views of the rolling hills, dense forests, and enchanting peaks and valleys of the Western Ghats.
It is an ideal spot for photography, allowing you to capture the beauty of the Western Ghats and the hues of sunrise and sunset as the sky adds an extra layer of colors. The area also creates ethereal and moody shots because of the frequent mist and fog.
View of Western ghat from Lakkidi viewpoint
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #4: Don't miss out on trying local Kerala cuisine at Wilton Restaurant which is like 7 minutes away. Their "wheat parotta'' and "Kottayam beef curry" are their specialties. But of course, you can opt for some other dishes as well.
5:00 pm - Return to The Hosteller

After a day filled with exploration and wonder, it's time to return to The Hosteller and take a well-deserved rest. You can also engage in lots of leisure activities with fellow travelers like a playful match of foosball or table tennis, perfect for unwinding and having fun.
If you're in the mood to relax, the swimming pool awaits, offering a refreshing escape. For those who enjoy the spotlight, a singing stage is available to showcase your vocal talents. With this you can end your day, ensuring you're refreshed and ready for another day.
Swimming pool and music stage at The Hosteller Wayanad
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #5: Given Wayanad's lack of coastal areas and railway lines, bus services are limited and relying on auto-rickshaws for short distances will be more costly. For affordable exploration, renting a car or a bike, especially a scooty, provides the freedom to travel over the region and experience its diverse attractions seamlessly.
The estimate calculation for day 01 is below:
Kozhikode railway station to The Hosteller - ₹ 800

Day 2 Itinerary
For your second day in Wayanad, we suggest an exciting itinerary that combines natural sights and a touch of local culture. Here's a suggested plan for your day 2:
10:00 am - Start with Banasura Dam
Beautiful landscape of Banasura Sagar Dam
Start your day by visiting Banasura Dam, which is a 49-minute drive from The Hosteller. We suggest you to spend approximately two hours here enjoying a plethora of activities like speed boating, coracle (round bamboo raft) riding, ziplining, and a unique fish spa.
For adventure enthusiasts, you can also trek at Banasura Sagar hill which is almost 9 km, although keep in mind that it can be time-consuming. If you plan to go for a trek, make sure to start no later than 6:00 am. The trek takes 4 to 5 hours two way. (We recommend skipping the trek here, as we have planned a trekking experience on day 3 of your trip.)
Person riding a bicycle on a tightrope at the Banasura Sagar Dam
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #6: While there are many exciting paid activities at the dam, choose one adventure activity rather than doing them all. We suggest you go for ziplining as it is cheaper compared to other activities as it costs ₹ 300, whereas other activities cost around ₹ 1000.
12:00 pm - Enjoy Meenmutty Waterfall
Lush greenery surrounds Meenmutty Waterfall
After exploring Banasura Dam, head over to Meenmutty Waterfall, which is just a 10-minute drive away from Banasura Dam. To make the most of your visit, reach before 3:00 PM and head to the top of Meenmutty Waterfall, as it offers a beautiful view of the cascading water. If you're lucky, you might catch glimpses of local wildlife or a variety of birds from these spots. Alternatively, you can enjoy a refreshing dip at the starting point.
View of Meenmutty Waterfall gracefully cascading
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #7: Meenmutty Waterfall has changing rooms approximately 1 km away from the main waterfall. Pack a lightweight change of clothes in your backpack. This way, you won't need to return to the hostel and can head straight for lunch directly.
3:00 pm - Lunch break
Spicy Kerala style fish curry stew
After your exciting adventure at Meenmutty Waterfall, around 3:00 PM, you can head for lunch. Try nearby spots like Food Lounge for Kerala fusion (12 min drive), Udupi Bhavan for veg South Indian (10 min drive), or Lake View for scenic Kerala-style seafood (14 min drive).
Alternatively, you can also return to The Hosteller if you need some rest and can have your lunch over there.
4:30 pm - Visit Wayanad Tea Museum
View of Wayanad Tea Museum
In the late afternoon, make your way to the Wayanad Tea Museum, just a 30-minute drive from The Hosteller and also from the restaurants mentioned above. The museum itself takes about 15 minutes to explore. You can also visit their café that serves authentic tea and coffee. Be sure to go for a tea-tasting experience, where you can savor the variety of flavors of Wayanad’s teas.
6:00 pm - Return to The Hosteller
People chilling in the common area of The Hosteller Wayanad
After a day filled with a great mix of nature and culture in Wayanad, it's time to return back to The Hosteller. Once you're back, you can either engage in indoor games with fellow travellers or chill in the common area or simply relax in your dorm. It's a fantastic way to conclude your eventful day in Wayanad.
The estimate calculation for day 02 is below:

Day 3 Itinerary
Day 3 you can go for an exciting trek in Wayanad. With an early start and a heart ready for exploration, get set to uncover the local markets and boutiques for unique souvenirs, spices, and cultural treasures of Wayanad.
4:00 am - Chembra Peak trek
Hikers trekking along the trail to Chembra Peak
You have to start your day at 4 am for a stunning sunrise experience at Chembra Peak. It is the highest peak in Wayanad at an altitude of 6,890 feet above sea level and the highest peak in the Western Ghats that is above 2,000 m. The trek starts from the ticket counter and takes almost 3 hours to reach the top point. It's a bit challenging because of the steep terrain. The trek takes you through tea plantations, dense forests, and overgrown grasslands.
The heart-shaped lake on top of Chembra Peak
As you climb up, keep an eye out for the heart-shaped lake, a unique and romantic feature of this hike. Once you reach the top, you will get a 360-degree view of the Western Ghats, and an entire view of Wayanad and Kozhikode, Malappuram and Niligiri districts.
Note: Permission is required from the forest department to start the Chembra Peak trek, and only 200 people are allowed per day.
Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #8: If you are traveling alone or with just two to three people, we recommend that you consider forming a group of 10 individuals. This will allow you to share the entry costs of the trek, as the cost per person and group remains the same.
2:00 pm - Return to The Hosteller
Unbox cafe of The Hosteller Wayanad
Having completed your thrilling trek to Chembra Peak, return back to your dorm by 2:00 pm to relax and take a rest after the morning's adventure. For lunch, consider visiting the nearby Rest N Dine restaurant, conveniently located just a 20-minute walk from The Hosteller. Alternatively, you have the option to order from ‘Unbox Cafe’, our in-house café, which offers a variety of delightful options to satisfy your post-trek hunger.
6:00 pm - Explore Local Shopping
Wayanad craft shop with cultural artifacts and traditional artistry
Around 6 PM, go out for local shopping in Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery, two towns in Wayanad. You can find local markets and shops offering a variety of items, including spices such as pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, etc. You can also find handicrafts like pottery, handwoven textiles, wooden items, traditional clothing, and more in these markets. Be sure to check with the staff at The Hosteller for recommendations on the best places to shop for authentic local products.
Traditional cholam puttu, steamed corn cakes served with kadala curry and other side dishes
After shopping in Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery, you can also go for the local cuisine. We recommend trying Kerala's traditional dishes such as Puttu, Kadala Curry, Meen Mutta Omelette, Fish Moilee, and Payasam. Some highly recommended dining options include Jubilee Restaurant, Hotel Wilton, Green Gates Hotel, The Woodlands Hotel, and Chembra Heritage.
The estimate calculation for day 03 is below:
Entry fee to Chembra Peak - ₹ 50
Parking charge - ₹ 10
