Beaches [ edit ]

  • 21.62275 87.52562 6 Old Digha Beach . One of the most popular beaches in West Bengal and it gets overcrowded, especially during the cooler winter break. Activities in the beach include horse riding, sunbathing, swimming volleyball, cricket, football etc. However, Old Digha is not safe and conducive for bathing. It is not as wide as it used to be due to heavy soil erosion. Big stones and concrete steps are used to hold together the beach. ( updated Mar 2023 )

Eat [ edit ]

west bengal tourism in digha

The famous 'Hinger Kochuri' is a famous breakfast of Digha. There are many stalls and sweet shops all over Digha which offers this delicious breakfast.

There are many cheap "rice hotels" all over Digha, serving cheap, but good quality Bengali dishes. There are some more expensive restaurants where continental food is available. In an average restaurant, a vegetarian meal is available for ₹35-45, Bengali fish curry-rice is available for ₹25-35. A meal with egg curry-rice is available around ₹45.

Another great idea would be to just buy the staple vegetarian fare at the hotel you are staying and have it delivered to your room. You can buy fresh fishes like ilish, pomfret, parshe and prawns from Mohona, Digha fish market in the morning and have it cooked at the numerous "Dada-Boudi'r" joints around Sea Hawk. Have this fish with your standard vegetarian lunch or dinner.

In the evening look for fried fish, crabs and prawns on the sea front in Digha.

Those who are fussy about the quality of cooking, have transport at their command and are looking for tasty fish preparations should go and have lunch at Shankarpur, they prepare the fish much better than at the rest of Digha. The quality at Shankarpur is comparable to the splurge dining in Kolkata but is comparatively cheaper and the fish as fresh as you can demand. The trouble of travelling would be well compensated.

  • Pabitra Hotel , New Digha ( 5 min walk from bus stand along main road ), ☏ +91 96 471 66166 , [email protected] .
  • Hotel Sandy Bay serves good Bengali cuisine. Try their sea food - prawns, pomfret, bhetki, parse (a small sweet water fish - cooked whole with the bones - so you must use your hands to eat), rohu (a form of carp). Vegetarian food such as mochar ghonto (spicy young green bananas), aloo posto, aloor dum (Bengali style), Kashmiri aloo dum and cholar daal is also available.

Drink [ edit ]

  • Alcohol — There are many bars and wine shops in Digha serving all sorts of hard drinks, but the liquor shops close around 7pm. If you want to buy a drink after the shops are closed, some guys in front of the shops will provide alcohol at higher prices (potentially black bargaining). The bar at Hotel Nest is good. But from Sandy Bay you can face the sea directly. A liquor shop has opened just 50 m outside the gates of the Fisheries premises on the right fork from Hotel Nest. A variety of medium grade whiskies, rum and other spirits are available.
  • Green Coconut water , (commonly known as 'Daab') is very cheap here. A single green coconut costs around ₹10-20 and the water is sweet and refreshing. The green coconut vendors move with their cycles all along the Sea Beach. There are also green coconut vendors which provide seating facilities near the beach.

Sleep [ edit ]

Located in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, Digha is one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the state. This seaside tourist site garners several tourists from not only West Bengal but from different parts of India. As this site is located only 187 km from the capital of West Bengal,  Kolkata , residents of the city visit in Digha quite frequently. Digha is commonly known as the “Brighton of the East”.

One of the most famous attractions of Digha is its sea beach which is over 7 km long. Even though the sea beach of the town is pretty shallow, tourists often go there to enjoy the sea.

Many people do not know this, but Digha was one of the most favorite places of Warren Hastings. He was the person who discovered this site and converted Digha into a tourist site. While writing a letter to his wife, Warren Hastings described Digha as “Brighton of the East.” The discovery of this majestic site happened in 1780. In 1923, Digha again became the center of attention when the world-famous English traveler, John Frank Smith started residing there. He was so mesmerized by this town’s simple beauty, that he decided to stay there permanently. Even though you might know that the then chief minister of West Bengal was the pioneer of turning Digha into a lucrative tourist spot, you might not know that it is John Frank Smith, who convinced him to take that step.

Digha is a perfect site for a short weekend getaway. Most people visit there to blow off some steam. If you ever visit there, try watching the sunset and sunrise in Digha. The view of the sea in the said times is breathtakingly beautiful. Throughout the city, you will find palm trees. The location of these trees by the sea beach makes this town even more beautiful. One of the best things about Digha is that, as the beach is pretty shallow and located pretty far from the Bay of Bengal, you will be able to swim there without any fear. Apart from the sea beach, there are many places in Digha that you might have never heard about.

In this blog, we are going to discuss the best places in Digha in detail. Reaching Digha has become a lot easier after it got a railway station in 2004. Now, tourists from nearby cities like Kolkata visit Digha within two to three hours by train. If you want to visit Digha by using an airplane, you will have to travel there from Kolkata. The nearest airport from Digha is located in Kolkata. Usually, people rent cars from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata to visit Digha. Many people love to go to Digha by driving their cars. The route from Kolkata to Digha is quite beautiful and is great for a road trip.

A Weekend Trip to Digha – Bengal’s own Goa

' src=

Last Updated on August 3, 2023

This Digha travel blog is just an account of our weekend trip to Digha, my first trip with my little one who was just 10-months-old at the time. Huge waves splashing on the rocks and then to your face. The beautiful Sal Forest providing the much-needed respite from the scorching sun in the beach. That’s how I pictured Digha when I heard of it in my childhood days. Located a little over 200 km from Kolkata, Digha is the evergreen tourist hotspot for the city-dwellers. However, I never got the chance to visit Digha till June this year. This was the first trip since October 2020 and with our little one.

The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.

A Quick Outline

First impression of Digha

west bengal tourism in digha

Digha is probably the most tourist-dense places I have visited in India, closely followed by Kodaikanal . These are domestic tourists, mainly from the home state West Bengal itself. We went in late June, when we experienced alternate days of unbearable heat and rainfall. Naturally this happens to be the off-season for any tropical beach. But even then, hotels were full, the beaches in vicinity were all too crowded and there was a rush at the famous Amravati Park till the time of closure.

The great thing about Digha is the beautification of some old beaches – the old Digha beach, the Shankarpur beach and some new beaches as well. They are all amazing to visit with the elderly and kids alike because of ample seats to rest in the shade. The Shaal forests are peaceful places to stroll, for those who can’t be in the crowd. If you are going by car, drive to the slightly secluded places like the Tajpur Beach and Talsari beach. Digha is also a fantastic place for shopping, so make sure you have some extra space for bringing back the goodies.

We started late on Friday at around 9 am after getting our 10-month-old ready. The road from Kolkata to Digha is quite a breeze once you get through the initial hurdle of Behala’s traffic. We reached our hotel at 2pm after driving around 185 km. It was a good idea to eat and take some rest while escaping the scorching summer sun of June.

We stayed at Hotel Daltin, which was located close to the Dheusagar Park Beach. While the location was within a walkable radius of the major points of interest like Old Digha Beach, New Digha Beach and Amarabati park, it didn’t have a sea-view.

Because of the huge tourist influx, the price of good hotels is on the higher side. But the entire coastline is lines with hotels and lodges for all pocket-sizes. They are mostly full on the weekends, so advance booking is a must.

west bengal tourism in digha

Plan ahead so that you can book the government lodge that is located close to the old Digha beach. It is cheap and well-equipped for a decent stay. Although you will not get the luxury of pool and spa, the spacious rooms, and the proximity to the beautiful old Digha beach compensate for it.

Since there is so much to see and do in Digha, I’d rather not splurge on an expensive spa resort. For that you have the nearby beach-town Mandarmoni. Digha is a place for backpackers and thrifty tourists. Here are some other places I recommend.

Evening drive to Talsari Beach, Odisha

west bengal tourism in digha

Well, that sounds strange right? Skip all major tourist spots and drive 10 km to a different state of India? Well, we started off with New Digha – the throbbing, overcrowded beach-cum-market. I don’t mind the crowd when you have a vast sand beach to explore. But New Digha Beach is not a sand beach. It’s a rock beach where the crowds hustle to get photos and see the sunset. It’s really the kind of experience that drives me away. And it did drive me far away to the Talsari Beach in Odisha.

west bengal tourism in digha

It was a lovely experience to escape to this serene beach in rural Odisha. It is popular and hosts many tourists – like a quarter of the tourists in New Digha. But mark me, even that’s not a small number. Lined by the cashew forests, the rugged beauty of the sea will leave you enchanted in the evening.

We had a lot planned for the next day. Starting with old Digha Beach, Amravati Park, Marine Aquarium, and all the way to the distant beaches of Tajpur and Mandarmani. But with elderly parents and an infant, things don’t always go as planned.

Morning walk to Dheusagar Beach-Park

west bengal tourism in digha

Before breakfast we had a brisk walk to the adjacent Dheusagar beach-park. It is a relatively new attraction in Digha. The beautified park amidst the Shaal Forest opens at 9 am. Though we couldn’t enter the park’s premises, we walked through the forests up to the beach.

The early morning views of the beach are spectacular as usual. Even though the sky was overcast, I loved the ambience of the morning.

Drive to Mandarmani

west bengal tourism in digha

Mandarmani is a resort-town near Digha. Most of the beaches are private and owned by the resorts. The one we landed at by following the Google Maps was a secluded beach with not a single tourist.

Keeping the heavy traffic of old Digha in mind we drove straight to Mandarmani. The experience was quite unique with and refreshing after the overcrowded Digha. But with the strong gush of sand blowing across our face we couldn’t linger there for long.

Tajpur Beach – My favorite

west bengal tourism in digha

Tajpur beach is located midway between Digha and Mandarmani. Not only is this beautiful and secluded, but also beautified by the government of West Bengal. With beach-shacks, cafes and parks, this is the perfect beach for families. There are ample shaded places to sit and enjoy the views on a sunny day or when it rains.

Also this is a sand beach where you can bathe, play and make sand-castles. Another refreshing change from the rock beaches of Digha.

Sunset at Mohana End point

west bengal tourism in digha

After this we came back to the hotel for lunch and rest. We set out once again in the evening and drove past the Old Digha Beach to Mohana end point. Over-tourism ensured that we indeed had to drive to the “END POINT” to find a parking spot for our car. But this place had was quiet and calm- just the way I like it in an evening at the seashore.

west bengal tourism in digha

Since this is on the eastern coast, you can catch the sunset on the opposite side of the sea. I walked up to the watchtower to manage a couple of decent pictures. Wasn’t too good.

Check out the best camera phones for travel blogging in India.

Old Digha and Amarabati Park

Old Digha Beach looked beautiful from far away. It’s also well-beautified by the state government and has a throbbing market near it. However, since we didn’t get a parking slot we drove straight to the Amarabati Park.

Amarabati Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in Digha. It has beautifully curated garden which you can explore through the lovely walkways. There is an artificial lake for boating and a ropeway too.

Day 3 – Homebound

west bengal tourism in digha

On our way back we headed to the Shankarpur beach – a fishing village which has now been beautified similar to the old Digha beach. I must say that this was my second-favorite spot in the Digha trip, besides Tajpur Beach.

Digha Trip -Shankarpur Beach

Well, if you are looking for a perfect Digha itinerary, this is not the one. This was our first trip after a span of 1.5 years, and we enjoyed the short getaway. The news of communal violence erupting in different parts of India did scare us right in the middle of the trip. But thankfully everything went smoothly.

I’d conclude that Digha is a great place for weekend getaway if you don’t mind the crowd. It’s better to use the local transport options in Digha instead of your own car. That way you not only help the environment, boost the local economy and a responsible traveler by doing so, but it is also convenient. Getting a parking spot at the major tourist spots is not easy.

It will take two days only to explore the Digha town. One would love to spend more time in the areas like Tajpur Beach or Talsari beach, for which you’d need to add a couple more days to your holiday.

Well, that was my travelogue of Digha. Have you been there? Let me know in the comments section and share the article if you liked it. Here’s an image for you to pin.

This looks so interesting! I am always interested in reading about destinations that are a bit off the tourist track and i might travel to Bangladesh for work so i keep this for future reference

It’s not Bangladesh. it is a highly popular tourist destination in the Indian state West Bengal.

Nice to read your blog author. Thank you. Keep it up.

west bengal tourism in digha

I had never been to Digha of which I heard so much even from my own relatives. Now the nice article by Sinjana Ghosh took me there as I read it from abroad. I started imagining what else can be added to the list of things to be done to boost the tourists flow and economy there. Here are some suggestions for the government and entrepreneurs.

1. Plant a lot of trees especially near the marshy areas- trees like coconut and palm trees, These will prevent erosion of the soil near the beach area apart from adding to the scenic view. Flower plants will catch the eye of tourists. 2. Restaurants, shops with many varieties, some amusement centers including a big size movie screen displaying current news and history of Digha and future plan of development, big size aquariums, ATM machine etc. will attract tourists. 3. It is necessary to have nice hotels nearby. 4. Well trained coast guards and arrangement for swimsuits/jackets (on payment) can encourage tourists to enjoy well in the water without fear. 5. Thanks to the government for trying to improve road connectivity.

Thanks, Mr. De, for such a thoughtful comment. I agree with you on all these ideas. However, there are already a large number of hotels accommodating many tourists. I believe, coast guards and water activities can increase the earnings for the local population.

Your tour weblog on the weekend day trip to Digha is an absolute delight! The vivid descriptions and fascinating pictures without a doubt transported me to the serene seashores and charming locales you explored. Your non-public anecdotes and targeted insights make this weblog ideal information for everybody planning a go-to to Digha. Keep sharing your incredible tour experiences!

west bengal tourism in digha

Thank you for sharing your experience in so much detail! Digha is no doubt one of the famous tourist hotspots in West Bengal. This thorough itinerary will not only help people of Bengal but also from outside to plan their vacation at Digha smoothly and not miss out on any spot. Keep sharing more blogs on your travel experiences! Also, I would suggest that staying near the seaside elevates one’s experience more. Hotel Utopia is one of the best hotels in Old Digha near sea beach which is totally affordable and you or anyone can try planning your next stay there!T

Thanks a lot Akash. I will consider this option next time.

Digha Beach: A Romantic Holiday Destination On The Bay of Bengal

Digha Beach

Digha Beach town situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal, Digha in West Bengal is the most popular tourist destination known for some of its untouched beaches, great foods and stays,Let’s explore Digha and get to know why it is known for.

WHAT IS DIGHA BEACH TOWN?

Digha is a beautiful beach town located on the magnificent shores of the Bay of Bengal. It is a popular holiday pick for families and people in West Bengal owing to the scenic beaches and diversity as a tourist spot.

Digha is one of the most popular sea resort picks in East Midnapore district, situated to the south-west of Kolkata. Digha is surrounded by beautiful beaches and tourist spots like religious temples, museums and high tech research centers. It is a long drive from Kolkata of 187 km.

Sun Rise Digha Beach

ALL ABOUT DIGHA BEACH & TOURISM

The beauty about the beaches lies in its nature of shallow low gradient, hard sand beach which is 7 km wide. The Casuarina plantation, girdling along the coastline of the beach make it a breathtaking scenic experience. The sea does start a mile away from the beach

If you are talking about Digha town and Digha beaches , you know the town should be must to visit for a weekend or on holidays with your family, partner or can make it solo too. I went with my family and so all experience of going to Digha, experience of the beach town and hotels in Digha to stay is based on my experience.

WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE & OFFBEAT

The popularity of Digha and the places in around the town as a holidaying spot has caused overcrowding, as an initiative to develop the tourist attraction new beaches have been developed as an extension for Old Digha. The extension is known as New Digha situated at 2 km away from the Old Digha tourist Spot.

As part of tourist development , Digha Sankarpur Development Authority (DSDA) has taken up a project to run toy train from Digha to Udaypur, near the border with Odisha. I hope the project to be in reality soon. Moreover as per Telegraph, the Bengal government has started constructing a 20km seafront driveway between Digha and Mandarmani that will reduce the distance between the two beach resorts by almost half

A GRAND HISTORY OF DIGHA: MUST READ

The story about the origin of the destination is an integral part about knowing the place. The place was originally known as Beerkul. This particular name finds mention in the letters of Warren Hastings as Brighton of the East. We further find an insight in the writings or John Frank Snaith an English Businessman, who was residing in the area of Beerkul.

It was on his insistence and insightful prospects shared about the place followed by rightful persuasion to then chief minister of Bengal Mr. Bidhan Chandra Roy that the modern day digha as we know gradually started materializing as a tourist destination. The little push from John Frank did bring forth the beauties of Beerkul as modern day digha.

Did you know ?There is a cashew nut farm in Digha town, hence  varieties of cashew nuts are available. I suggest you to buy authentic cashew for yourself and also to support local economy!

BEST SEASON TO VISIT DIGHA BEACH & TOWN

Mid-October to mid-February is a pleasant time to visit Digha as you will witness cool breeze and less humidity. The Summers in Digha are hot and also humid. This is not the best time to visit Digha. July onwards, monsoon hits the town bringing relief from soaring temperature. However, the level of humidity is high and so tourists resist from coming here.

PLACES TO VISIT IN DIGHA: MY RECOMMENDATION

I will give you the best places to visit when in Digha town, please note you will have tons of activities to do in Digha. Howver, do visit few selected one from the below list and take out time to sit back , enjoy and relax.

The crowning glory of the tourist destination is the famous Digha Gate. The majestic piece is and arch on arch structure enhancing the beauty of the location. The first of the places to visit in Digha is what I recommend

MARC (MARINE AQUARIUM & RESEARCH CENTRE

it is the 16th center of Zoological survey of India placed in Digha. MARC is established as an initiative of National Council of Science Museums. The highlight of the centre is that it is Asia’a largest Marine Aquarium and was brought to life in 1989. The aquarium is huge, comprising of thirty two tanks. Out of these 32 tanks, twenty four are the larger ones and the rest eight tanks are small in size harboring fresh water.

The water tanks are operational and are equipped with compressed supply of air, water supply is regulated and light. The objective of the research centre is to showcase the biodiversity of the marine life of the region, uphold the standards and communicate the message to the commoners to be able to carry on with the research work.

The aquarium houses three kinds of creatures or species labeled under the following – Local and curious species, the freshwater species and species which require conservative importance. The species which are part of these categories are – Sea snakes, lobsters, sharks, Horseshoe crabs, rays, butterfly fishes and sea anemones

CHANDRESHWAR TEMPLE DIGHA

The chandreshwar temple is situated on the border of Bengal and Orissa. It is situated approximately 8 km away from Digha. Various modes of local transports are available to visit the said location. It is century old Temple of Lord Shiva. Chandreshwar primarily is part of Orissa. The place is popular for an annual fair that takes place during the month of Chaitra (As per the lunar Calendar) in March/April.

The footfall is nearly as huge as half a million people visit the place as part of a pilgrimage. The folklore about the place makes it a popular destination and a tourist spot. The Shiva linga in the temple cannot be seen by anyone as it is buried underground. According to the folklore it is believed that in the ancient times a widow had prayed to Lord Shiva for a prolonged period of time and the lord answered her prayers.

Shiva was pleased by her dedication and appeared in her dream stating that he would reside in the village but no one would be able to see him, however, his presence would be felt in form of a bubble of cold water in that place. The pilgrims travel from faraway places to witness this unbelievable miracle of a water bubble on the surface with an underground Shiva lingam.

TALSARI BEACH DIGHA

As the name suggests it is a beach which has Palm and coconut trees along the beach. Tal is the Bengali name for Palm and Sari is row. The destination is well known for delicacies and exotic sea food. It would feature on bucket list of places to visit for foodies and people who are looking for solitude.

The beach has a breathtaking view with mountains surrounding the landscape. The stretch of lush green landscape and rivers make a wonderful mix and a place one must visit. Many people do not opt for this place making it an offbeat location and quite place. If looking for a serene place with peace and quiet as companion along with great food to entice your taste buds along with adventure of finding trails. This is place one must visit.

SCIENCE CENTRE DIGHA

The science centre established as an attraction or added perk by National Council of Science Museums. The center is a house of various mechanisms and scientific marvel to engage the visitors and stimulate the senses by making science a fun learning experience.

There is a section of Fun glasses that distort the way an individual looks while few aid in measuring height. The funny skeleton who is a companion for bicycle racing. A planetarium in the shape of an Igloo. The Science park is an entertainment center as well as a source of interactive educational opportunities. The center has further introduced Jurassic Age as part of interaction, tickling the inquisitiveness of the kids visiting the park.

AMRAVATI LAKE

It is a tiny attraction which is a small park where the tourists can enjoy boat rides. The serene scenery is an added perk to the experience. Adjacent to the lake is Deepak Mitra’s snake farm.

SHANKARPUR BEACH

Shankarpur is addressed as a virgin beach owing to the recent discovery of the place. It is approximately located 14kms away from Digha, on the Digha contai road. It is called the twin beach of Digha. Previously the beach was not promoted and so no resorts were developed.

However, gradually the hotel industry has been developed; with the help of tourism the beach is promoted. Shankarpur offers the perks of a private beach along with the signature casuarinas plantations along the coastline. The advantage of shankarpur as a destination is being new and hence less crowded. The highlight of the destination is the Fishing Harbour Project.

JUNPUT BEACH RESORT

It is yet another destination around Digha. The beach resort is a recent development and the tides play a major role for the destination. It is located approximately 40 kms away from Digha. Bus transportation is available from Digha to visit Junput. The signature Casuarina trees lined up along the landscape and the gentle sea breeze make it a scenic brilliance. Junput was ignored completely after independence for development.

The attraction of the destination is the studies on marine biology as well as the research conducted on and around sea-fish. Shark oil extraction is carried out in Junput. Breeding of ducks in conducted on farms along with brackish water fish cultivation is done under the initiative of the State Government’s Fisheries department.

UDAIPUR VIRGIN BEACH

The virgin sea beach is sea resort in making. It is located near the border of Orissa is approximately 3 km from Digha Railway station. It is situated between Talsari and Digha. It is a reclusive destination from the hustle bustle of a city or the crowded beaches.

The signature coastline of casuarinas trees is part of the shoreline make the beach a scenic pleasure. The only inhabitants are fishermen. The few huts around Udaipur runs makeshift stalls on the beach, the menu comprises of cooked sea fish and local delicacies.

WONDER LAND (KAJAL DIGHI)

It is a water park and is a different kind of experience. There is a small train tour is part of the amusement park. The kids would love the experience.
