Youth Travel Basketball Organization from Michigan

4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th Grade 

WHO ARE WE?

 The Great Lakes Warriorz was founded in 2012. The goal was to create an independent travel organization that provided more intense basketball than the average recreation or travel team. But unlike many AAU teams, the focus is more on player development, TEAM chemistry, fundamentals, and a fun family-friendly environment while still maintaining a high level of competitive basketball. We offer Tryouts for Fall/Winter Season from October through March for Grades 3rd - 8th. We also offer Tryouts for Spring/Summer season for 3rd - 8th Grades but also includes 9th, 10th, and 11th Grades (based on interest).

Great Lakes Warriorz hosts some of the most competitive basketball tournaments in Michigan for AAU, Travel, and Community Teams!

TEAM ANNOUCEMENTS ARE NOW LIVE!

Our Basketball Program currently offers teams at multiple different levels.  Teams compete in West Michigan and may travel reasonably local.  These teams have 8-10 playdates and practice twice a week.  Over the next couple of years we plan to expand our basketball program to include more teams and offer Camps and Lessons as well. 

Girls Basketball

• Season Length: November-January
• 2 practices a week (1 ½ – 2 hours)
• Practice start mid-November
•  Teams stay regional in travel (up to 2 hours away)
• 8-10 playdates
• Attend all practices and play dates and if you have to miss it is expected that it is only for a school sport.  
• Communicate with coach at least 2 weeks before anything missed unless unexpected 
• On time to all practices and play dates.
• Team practices two times a week
• Assistance in the recruiting process from Coach/Club

It starts with skill development.

Our Player Development is unmatched. Our athletes participate in one or two Team Practices each week (depending on team) where the entire practice is devoted to team concepts. Athletes then have several training options available Mon-Fri that are devoted entirely to individual player development where players attend the Skills Classes of their choice. These classes include: Skills & Shooting Class, Handles Class (30 or 60 min), Shooting Form (30 or 60 min), Off-Hand Development, Finishing School, Pivot Foot Class, Vert Class and Strength Class. Michigan Made Travel Basketball is a competitive travel basketball program with top-notch coaches for the top-notch players. We teach the fundamentals to the elite-level skills that it takes to succeed in highly competitive leagues and tournaments. Our clubs ball against the best athletes and teams both locally and nationally representing the Central Michigan and Tri-City regions.

Our Teams are divided by skill level, merit and experience, with clubs in the Girls 3-8th divisions, along with clubs in the Boys 3rd-8th divisions.

Michigan Made "BLACK" teams represent the best players that our region has to offer in their respective age division. The Michigan Made "WHITE" teams are made up by the next tier of standout area athletes who display top-player qualities, along with a desire to improve and vie for a spot on the top roster.

Our Season begins with tryouts hosted in Midland, Michigan in September for the late fall and winter seasons. Athletes in the boys age divisions will compete around Michigan and the Midwest in league-play and tournament-play between November and March depending on the team. Additional shooting camp, speed training opportunities are provided and included in the season fees for Michigan Made travel athletes. Supplemental tournaments and dates may be added.

Our Coaching Staff is directed by All-American and former NJCAA Scoring Champ, Taylor Smith. Her experienced team of coaches boasts a wealth of knowledge with a goal of mentoring each athlete and unlocking their potential on and off the court. Our team promises to develop your athlete to the best of their ability and we look forward to working with your athlete and growing their love of the game.

Travel baseball teams.

West Michigan Warriors is a competitive travel baseball organization dedicated to raising strong men of God, and serving those in need. We are located in Grand Rapids, MI and our indoor training facility is located on 44th Street. We teach fundamental, competitive baseball  in a family friendly environment.

Warriors travel teams will compete in many regular season games, and several highly competitive tournaments. Total games will be approximately 30-70 games in a season, depending on age.

Warriors players participate in service based activities in addition to regular practices and games. We are fully aware and sensitive to the time commitments involved in travel baseball. We make every effort to balance this out with the service based activities that the team participates in. We feel that these activities benefit the players, the team, the parents of the players, and of course the people we are serving.

When your child joins West Michigan Warriors, you can be sure they will learn the game in a safe environment- free of cursing, tobacco, alcohol, etc. They will also learn valuable lessons that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

KE'SHAWN FISHER

6-6, Sr., F, River Rouge

Fisher had an outstanding senior season, then took his game to another level in the postseason to lead River Rouge to the Division 1 state quarterfinals. He averaged 26 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks and then led his team to upset wins over Dearborn and defending state champion Detroit Cass Tech before a state quarterfinal loss to Ann Arbor Huron.

“His strength and his ability to do everything at a high level on the basketball court, scoring, assists, rebounding, blocking shots and now an emerging leader made him special,” coach Joe Carr said of Fisher, who has offers from Duquesne, Florida Gulf Coast, Eastern Michigan and Detroit.

JA'LEN JENKINS

6-2, Sr., G, Belleville

Jenkins was a four-year varsity player who became a strong leader and tough competitor, helping Belleville reach the Division 1 Final Four his sophomore year, then to an 18-6 record his senior season, He averaged 14.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists, knocking down 39.4% of his 3s.

“He’s an extremely unselfish player who cared about winning more than stats,” coach Adam Trumpour said. “Whether he scored 30 or 2 you could never tell, he was always happy if we won. He was a great teammate, excellent student, played both ends of the floor.”

NASSIM MASHHOUR

6-4, Sr., G, Dearborn

Mashhour had a strong senior season, averaging 20.7 points, 6.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.8 steals to lead his team to the Kensington Lakes Activities Association championship and the program’s first unbeaten regular season.

“He showed great leadership and the ability to play as a distributor or as a scorer, making big shots and big plays in tight games made him a special player,” said coach Abe Mashhour, also Nassim’s father. “He was defending the best or second-best player on every team.”

MACARI MOORE

6-2, Jr., G, Ann Arbor Huron

Moore averaged 23 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists to help Huron to a 22-5 record and a Division 1 state semifinal appearance . He made a game-winning basket in a 54-53 regional semifinal win over Detroit Catholic Central, then scored 24 points in a state quarterfinal win over East Lansing.

“He can score at all three levels,” coach Mo Kasham said. “He has great court awareness and vision to make the right basketball play. He plays with great pace, feel and intuition.”

JONATHAN SANDERSON

6-2, So., G, Saline

Sanderson had an outstanding sophomore season, averaging 29.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals, scoring 44 in the SEC Red title game win over Ann Arbor Huron. He shot 49% from the field and has 1,146 career points in just two seasons.

“His work ethic is what makes him a special player,” coach Mike Marek said. “He has put in countless hours behind the scenes, and I’m glad it has paid off. He’s a fiery competitor that leaves it on the floor every night.”

Riverview Gabriel Richard

Daiek guided Gabriel Richard to a 23-4 record, a Catholic League championship and its first regional championship since 1989, advancing to the Breslin Center to complete in a Division 3 state semifinal .

“Although we didn’t accomplish all of our goals, which was to play on the last day of the season, we had a tremendous run,” Daiek said. “Winning the Catholic League, winning the district and regional was great for our school and our community. This group was fun to coach and be around on a daily basis. I am extremely lucky to have these guys back for one more year. We hope to extend our season to one more game next year.”

2 youth Mary Free Bed wheelchair teams compete in national b-ball tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — March Madness recently wrapped up, but it wasn’t just the NCAA who was competing. Mary Free Bed had two teams qualify for the Junior Wheelchair Basketball National Championship this weekend.

“It was incredible,” said Molly McKinney, Mary Free Bed sports coordinator, describing what it was like for their teams to compete in the national championship. “It just felt bigger than what they had experienced in the past.”

Mary Free Bed had two teams qualify for this year’s tournament, which was held in Richmond, Virginia. The Junior Pacers Varsity team and the Junior Pacers Prep team is made up of 16 athletes ages 7–18 with various physical disabilities.

“Actually, my little brother came and was watching some of the games and he was really surprised at how much hitting that was happening and asking all sorts of different rules that were related to basketball. So, it was ... it just fast and fierce and very exciting to watch,” said McKinney.

Unfortunately, the teams did not win their divisions. The Junior Pacers Prep team finished sixth and the Junior Pacers Varsity Team finished fourth. McKinney says the competition was fierce among the 48 teams that qualified. She is proud of all their hard work and determination, saying the teams left everything on the court.

“The thing that I love the most about our program is giving the opportunity for people to have sports movements and that camaraderie that you get from sports," McKinney says. "I just absolutely love that we can bring sport and movement to people who might not necessarily think that they would have that opportunity.”

The Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Program is one of the largest of its kind in the United States, offering recreational opportunities to hundreds of people with disabilities of all ages.

Michigan basketball has contacted a whole bunch of potential transfers

D usty May said he was going to cast a big net when searching for players to add to his inaugural Michigan roster. He wasn’t kidding.

According to various reports, Michigan has reached out to nearly two dozen players currently in the transfer portal. The interest level — on both sides — surely varies depending on the player, but Michigan is at least kicking the tires on a large number of prospects.

May, hired last month to replace Juwan Howard, has a wide-open roster. Of Michigan’s 13 available scholarships, just one is currently taken: Forward Will Tschetter will stay with the program . May isn’t going to use the portal to fill the rest of the spots — he made that clear at his introductory press conference — but expect at least a few portal additions.

MLive previously reported on several candidates : Vanderbilt’s Jason Rivera-Torres, Belmont’s Cade Tyson, Colorado’s J’Vonne Hadley have all been contacted by Michigan. Same with Toledo’s Dante Maddox Jr., who will reportedly visit Louisville this weekend and would like to visit Michigan as well. He has Michigan in his top five, according to On3 Sports, and said May recruited him out of high school.

Since that report, many more players have been linked to the Wolverines. Tre Donaldson, a sophomore at Auburn, is projected to choose Michigan, according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-3 guard appeared in 35 games last season, starting 10, and averaged 19.2 minutes, 6.7 points, and a team-high 3.2 assists per game. He shot 41 percent from 3 on 68 attempts.

Another Auburn point guard has also been mentioned with Michigan: Aden Holloway, a former five-star prospect who started 26 games as a freshman. He had an offer from Howard out of high school and his sister will be a freshman on Michigan’s women’s basketball team this coming season. The 6-foot-1 Holloway averaged 7.3 points and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 30 percent on 172 3-point attempts.

Auburn went 27-8 this season, losing as a 4 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to 13 seed Yale.

Roddy Gayle Jr., a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Ohio State, is reportedly working on setting up a visit to Michigan. Drew Thelwell, a 6-foot-3 point guard who spent the past four seasons at Morehead State and averaged 6.3 assists as a senior, has scheduled visits to Iowa and SMU and is planning to visit Michigan.

Many of the reports have come from “The Portal Report,” a team of reporters that provide scouting reports on the thousands of players in the portal. One of their reporters clarified that contact normally comes from a head coach reaching out via text message or social media DM.

Sometimes the interest is more serious than others. Vlad Goldin, Florida Atlantic’s starting center the past three seasons, will visit Michigan this weekend along with another 7-footer , Yale sophomore Danny Wolf.

Florida Atlantic has several players in the portal, including star guard Johnell Davis. May would figure to have an upper hand if he chooses to pursue any of his former Owls, but he’s clearly keeping his options open.

Other players Michigan has reportedly contacted include Oregon State sophomore guard Jordan Pope, High Point senior guard Duke Miles, Oklahoma junior guard Javian McCollum (who received a 247Sports prediction to land at Georgia Tech), Dayton senior guard Kobe Elvis, Notre Dame freshman forward Carey Booth (though he didn’t list Michigan among schools he was thinking about visiting), and a pair of players May faced in the American Athletic Conference last season: South Florida senior guard Selton Miguel and Tulane sophomore guard Kolby King.

Michigan has also reportedly shown interest in junior guard Javon Small, who played for Mike Boynton Jr. at Oklahoma State last season. May is deep in talks to add Boynton as an assistant coach. Another potential target, Georgetown freshman guard Rowan Brumbaugh, played with Wolf in high school.

That’s 19 names, not to mention the current Wolverines May is evaluating in addition to uncommitted high school prospects.

Michigan is a rebuilding program, but May wants a competitive team in his first season. He’s working hard to find the right players.

The college basketball teams with the most national championships.

There are more than 350 schools in Division I men's basketball. Yet only 15 teams have won multiple national championships. UCLA comes in first with 11. But which schools are close behind?

There are seven teams tied for ninth place at two championships apiece. Cincinnati (1961, 1962), Florida (2006, 2007), Louisville (1980, 1986), Michigan State (1979, 2000), North Carolina State (1974, 1983), Oklahoma State (1945, 1946), and San Francisco (1955, 1956).

Interestingly enough, four of those teams won their two championships in back-to-back years.

Years: 1985, 2016, 2018

Villanova knows how to win a championship in style. The Wildcats’ first title still holds the record for the lowest-seeded team to win the NCAA tournament, as 8-seed Villanova upset mighty 1-seed Georgetown in 1985. In 2016, Kris Jenkins etched his name into March lore with a half-court buzzer-beater to down North Carolina. And in 2018, junior guard Donte DiVincenzo won the MOP after scoring 31 points off the bench as the Wildcats won their second in three years.

T6: Kansas — 4

Years: 1952, 1988, 2008, 2022

Kansas is the most recent national champion, beating North Carolina in a thriller in 2022. The Jayhawks' most recent title before that was an OT win against Memphis in 2008.

T4: Indiana — 5

Years: 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987

Indiana’s first two championships came via a former player in Branch McCracken. McCracken graduated from Indiana in 1930, and took over the coaching job in 1938-39. In his second year, he led the Hoosiers to a 20-3 season capped off by a 60-42 win over Kansas in just the second national championship game ever. Seven years after McCracken’s tenure ended, Bob Knight would take over in Bloomington. Knight’s first championship with Indiana in 1976 came on the end of a 32-0 season — the last perfect season by a national champion. 

T4: Duke — 5

Years: 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015

All five of Duke’s championships come after 1981. Why is that an important date? It’s the first season Mike Krzyzewski took over in Durham. Before Coach K, Duke had been to two title games, losing to UCLA in 1964 and Kentucky in 1978. Since, they’ve been to nine, winning five, and holding the record for the most championships since 1990.

T3: Connecticut — 6

Years: 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024

Connecticut has the most national championships this century at five, but there’s a much more prestigious record the Huskies hold. UConn has been to six championship games and has won every time. No other team with at least three appearances is undefeated in title games.

T3: North Carolina — 6

Years: 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017

In 1957, a year after Bill Russell and San Francisco went 29-0 to win the national championship, fifth-year coach Frank McGuire led North Carolina to the second-ever undefeated national championship season in NCAA tournament history. The Tar Heels wouldn’t make it back to the championship game until 1968, in Dean Smith’s seventh year in Chapel Hill. It was the second of three straight Final Four trips without a title, but Smith’s first (and UNC’s second) would come in 1982, thanks to a roster of James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and Michael Jordan. Smith would win one more title in 1993. All three of UNC’s other championships came from his protégé, Roy Williams.

2: Kentucky — 8

Years: 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, 2012

In the middle of the 20th century, long before they became famous for their team’s youth, Kentucky was a powerhouse. Adolph Rupp started at Kentucky in 1930-31, but it wasn’t until his 18th season, in 1948, that the Wildcats would win the program’s first NCAA tournament title. They’d repeat in 1949, and pick up two more before Rupp retired. Since, four different coaches have won a title with Kentucky: Joe B. Hall in 1978, Rick Pitino in 1996, Tubby Smith in 1998, and John Calipari in 2012.

1: UCLA — 11

Years: 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995

In all of college sports, it doesn't get much better than UCLA's reign through the ‘60s and ‘70s. From 1964 to 1975, UCLA had an overall record of 335-22, a win percentage of .938. Over 12 years. Through it all, the Bruins picked up 10 national championships, including seven in a row — feats that will never be replicated.

Michigan basketball's Dusty May adds St. Mary's associate head coach Justin Joyner

Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has added a second assistant to his coaching staff.

Justin Joyner, an assistant at Saint Mary's, agreed to leave the Gaels on the West Coast to join May as an assistant in Ann Arbor, he confirmed the move to the Free Press on Thursday morning.

May was announced as the Wolverines' head coach on March 23 and made his first official assistant hire on April 4, when he landed Georgia assistant Akeem Miskdeen . Prior to that, there was rumor of former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton Jr. joining the staff, and while that move is still not yet official, sources with knowledge of the situation say it will be finalized in the coming days.

Joyner, 36, finished his seventh season with the Gaels and consistently moved his way up since his hire prior to the 2017-18 season.

Joyner was brought on as director of operations, then was promoted to assistant coach the following season, and earned another promotion prior to the 2022 season, when he was named associate head coach under Randy Bennett.

Saint Mary's made four NCAA tournaments in six opportunities during Joyner's time with the program, and this year flipped the script on Gonzaga and won both the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles, before getting upset as a 5-seed by 12-seed Grand Canyon in the opening round of March Madness.

In his playing days, Joyner was a starting point guard for the California State Division I champion De La Salle High School (2006), before he became point guard for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos from 2006-11 , where he's No. 2 all-time in steals (134) and No. 8 in assists (357).
