aesthetic french quote bon voyage

What does bon voyage mean?

It literally means:

  • Voyage → Trip

It means "Have a good trip " or "Have a nice trip ". We use it when saying goodbye to someone (or a group of people) leaving for a trip, to wish a safe and nice time during the trip.

Cool thing: "bon voyage " is also used in English with the exact same meaning.

When you want to wish a safe and good trip to someone or a group of people, you can simply add "Bon voyage ".

If you want to make a sentence out of it, you can say: "Fais bon voyage " (Have a nice/good trip). And for a formal version, use instead: "Je vous souhaite un bon voyage → I wish you a good/nice trip "

If the trip involves driving on the road, you can use "Bonne route → Have a nice (trip on the) road ". And if it's a flight: "Bon vol → Have a good/nice flight ".

Finally, if the trip is about going home, you can also use "Bon retour → Have a good/nice journey home ".

A little trick, if you add "bon(ne) " before a noun, it will mean: "enjoy *noun* " or "have a nice/good *noun* ".

Few examples:

  • Bonne journée → Have a nice day
  • Bon week-end → Have a nice weekend
  • Bon appétit → Enjoy your meal
  • Bonne visite → Enjoy your visit
  • Bon match → Enjoy the game
  • Je vous souhaite un bon voyage → I wish you a good/nice trip
  • Fais bon voyage → Have a good/nice trip
  • Bonne route → Have a nice (trip on the) road / Be safe on the road
  • Bon vol → Have a good/nice flight
  • Bon retour → Have a good/nice journey home

Example in a dialogue with French audio

Allez, on y va !

All About the Phrase “Bon Voyage” – and the Travel Habits of the French

' src=

French people have been wishing each other Bon voyage (Have a nice trip) for centuries. The saying is so common that it’s one of those French phrases that’s been adopted into other languages, including English .

Despite how frequently you might hear it, like any ultimate travel destination, bon voyage offers a lot more to discover than you might expect.

Let’s take a guided tour of Bon voyage  and learn about the travel habits of the French along the way!

What does bon voyage mean?

Bon voyage means “Have a good trip”. But as you can see, there aren’t quite as many words to it. Literally, it’s just “Good trip/voyage”.  So, how did we get there?

Wishes in French with bon(ne)(s)

what is a bon voyage statement

Bon voyage is a shortened form of a phrase like Je vous souhaite un bon voyage. (I wish you a good trip.) or Fais bon voyage (Have a good trip.).

Both of these sentences are still used today, but they tend to be more formal (for the first) or uncommon (for the second).  This is because the French like to keep things brief, so why not just say it in two words?

Bon voyage isn’t the only phrase that expresses a wish like this. There’s a whole list of them, and you may know at least a few already.

These include:

  • Bonne année  – Happy New Year
  • Bonnes vacances – Have a nice vacation
  • Bon appétit – Enjoy your meal
  • Bonne journée / Bonne soirée – Have a nice day/evening
  • Bon weekend – Have a nice weekend
  • Bonne route – Have a good/safe drive
  • Bon anniversaire – Happy birthday! This is a less common equivalent of Joyeux anniversaire .

You’ll frequently hear and see these phrases – and you may discover some others, as well. In French, you can add Bon , Bonne, Bons, or Bonnes to a noun (often a gerund (a noun that describes an action)) to say “Have a good….” or “Enjoy…”.

For instance, if you run into someone as you’re headed to the movies, they might tell you << Bon film !>> (“Enjoy the movie!”).

Or you could hear Bonne baignade ! (Have a nice swim!),  and so on.

The structure Bon(ne)(s) + noun works for so many situations, but it can be tricky for us non-native speakers sometimes. For instance, if you want to say “Enjoy the book!”, you can’t use the word livre (book); it would be Bonne lecture! (Happy reading!).

Expressing a complex wish, like “Have a nice day at work!” can also be confusing. You can’t just say Bon travail ! – that literally means “Good work/Good job!”.

So, what can you do to be sure you get these phrases right?

Sometimes, using these expressions is something that will come from listening to and absorbing French.

Other times, you might be able to correct yourself if you realize you’re using an expression that already means something, as in the case of Bon travail .

And when it comes to one of those complex wishes, like “Have a good day at work,” it’s probably best to just say it in a different way – it’s not a simple idea, after all.

So, “Have a good day at work” could be Passe une bonne journée au bureau! or in a more formal conversation, Je te/vous souhaite une bonne journ é e au bureau!

….Then again, since the French prefer to keep things concise, you could probably just say Bonne journ ée and leave it at that.

If this seems overwhelming, don’t worry. The phrases with bon(ne)(s) that I’ve listed, as well as a few others , are the most common ones, and are important to know. But if you feel unsure about using bon(ne)(s) + noun otherwise, remember that there are always other ways to say what you want.

For example, I could say «  J’esp è re que tu passeras une bonne journée au travail. » (I hope you’ll have a good day at work) or « J’esp ère que ce livre te plaira. »  (I hope you’ll like this book.). Just think about the meaning behind the wish.

Other ways to wish people well in French using bon(ne)(s)

what is a bon voyage statement

The expressions we’ve just learned about translate to “Have a good____”. But there are some other expressions in French that use bon(ne)(s) to wish people well in a slightly different way.

In these cases, instead of talking about something concrete or expected, these expressions refer to things like luck or the future.

You’ve probably come across one of the most famous before:

Bonne chance – Good luck

Other common phrases like this include:

  • Bonne continuation   – Keep it up! or Good luck with your future endeavors!
  • Bon rétablissement – Get well soon
  • Bon courage – Hang in there (Although this phrase isn’t necessarily as informal is “Hang in there,” and can be used in most situations)

There’s no major difference between these expressions and others like them , and the ones we looked at earlier, but there are two subtle ones you may come across:

• These well-wishes tend to stay in their original structure. Whether they’re stand-alone statements, or used in a longer phrase (ex: Je vous souhaite une  bonne continuation ), you wouldn’t replace Bon/Bonne with Super in any of these phrases.

• When you’re talking about events, like your continued career or your path back to health, you add un or une before bon/bonne when it’s used in a sentence, as you can see in the example in the previous paragraph. But when you talk about a totally abstract concept or feeling like luck or courage, you don’t use an article (ex: Je te souhaite bon courage. ) .

How to take bon voyage to the next level

Although you can’t add to or change the core phrases we saw in the last section, you can modify bon voyage and its closest cousins a bit.

Most of the time, Bon voyage is a perfectly normal way to wish someone a good trip. But maybe you want them to know you hope they have an EXTRA good trip.

In this case, you can add tr è s (very), like so: Passe(z) un tr è s bon voyage. or Je vous/te souhaites un tr è s bon voyage.

In informal situations, like when you’re talking to a friend, you could replace tr ès bon or just tr ès with super.  For example: Passe(z) un super voyage OR Passe(z) un super bon voyage.

For more formal situations, excellent would be a good replacement.  For example: Je vous souhaite un excellent voyage.

You’ve probably realized that when you add tr ès, super , or excellent , you can’t just use Bon voyage on its own, though.

Do the French say Bon voyage a lot?:  The French and travel

what is a bon voyage statement

The average working French person gets five weeks of paid vacation a year, plus about a week’s worth of personal days. There are also a number of national holidays in France, and schools have two-week vacations every six weeks, plus two months of summer vacation. Train tickets are usually affordable, and low-cost airlines operate out of many French airports. So it’s no wonder that the French are among the nationalities that travel the most .

Where and when do the French travel?

But where do they like to go?  It turns out that most French people tend to travel primarily within France .

Part of this can be explained by the French rail system, which is highly developed and fairly affordable. It’s easy to go to major cities or even small towns, and since many trains are high speed, a trip like that might only take a few hours. Add to this the wide range of landscapes to be found in mainland France alone – from the warm beaches of the Côte d’Azur, to the ski slopes of the Alps, to attractions in major cities like Paris. France is even home to Europe’s only Disney theme park.

And of course, many French people use at least some of their vacation time to visit family and friends who also live in France.

As for when the French travel, there are some traditions around that. But it turns out they don’t totally reflect reality.

For instance, French people typically go on their longest or even only vacation in summer. August is considered a month when everything shuts down (well, except in vacation/tourism destinations, of course). Entire businesses will close their doors because everyone is on vacation.

But with globalization, as well as new, strategic ways of thinking, that’s changed in recent years. According to recent statistics, 69% of the French population takes a summer vacation. But many companies have at least a few employees who stay behind in August – and those people aren’t always disappointed about it. Some French people prefer to work during this time because their offices are usually calmer since so many of their coworkers and bosses are away. They take a vacation another time – when most destinations will be less crowded and pricey, besides.

Similarly, in winter, especially during the winter school holidays, French people traditionally go on ski trips. And yet, it turns out that only 1 in 10 French people go skiing every year.

Part of these lower-than-expected numbers is due to cost. Not everyone can afford to travel – especially taking a ski trip, which involves a lot of expenses beyond room and board.

Which countries do the French travel to most?

Although France itself is the number-one travel destination for French people, the French do go abroad, as well. And when you think about it, with all of the vacation time they have, a majority of a French person’s travel might be national, but they might go beyond their borders for at least one of those trips.

The top countries visited by the French in 2019 include Spain, Greece, Italy, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, and Russia, as well as Canada and the United States.

What do people think of French tourists?

All of this traveling has earned the French  a reputation in the hospitality and tourism industries, as well as with locals in certain places. The typical French tourist is known to be critical, curious, cheap, and seductive.

As some of the people interviewed in this article suggest , seemingly negative traits like being critical may also make them have a more in-depth travel experience. For instance, a tour guide in India explains that instead of saying that they like or don’t like an ice cream flavor, a French tourist will often ask about what’s in it.

They might also make suggestions for how its taste might be improved, which goes with another way the French are perceived: as comparing everything to how good it is or how much it costs back in France.

None of this is to say that the French are terrible tourists (even though they often joke about this amongst themselves). After all, tourists from every country have their good and bad points , and a lot of times it has to do with how well their culture meshes with the local one.

For what it’s worth, one thing I’ve noticed about French people who travel to other countries is that whether or not they complained or made comparisons to France on-site, they generally seem to see their experience as positive, even as a way to expand their knowledge and perspective on the world. Whether they spent a week sunbathing on a beach somewhere, or visited a new city or monument, they come home with a sense of having learned something, and (understandably) often nostalgia for the place they left.

This Egyptian tour guide agrees with me. She loves French tourists because [ i]ls sont très cultivés, ils s’intéressent aux monuments. Ils ne voyagent pas seulement pour prendre des photos (They’re very educated, they’re interested in monuments. They don’t travel just to take pictures.).”

A recent survey shows that 53% of French people see taking a vacation as important and something they’re willing to make sacrifices for.  In addition to self-care and getting away from it all, I think some of this could also be chalked up to wanderlust and a natural curiosity and fascination with other places.

Do you have a favorite place to travel? How about somewhere you dream of going – particularly in France? Whether you’re planning a trip or just armchair traveling, Bon voyage!

“Bon voyage” credit?

By PomPoot , December 19, 2021 in Carnival Cruise Lines

Cool Cruiser

I bought CHEERS the day before embarking. The first entry on my account is a line that says “Cheers prepay” and it shows what I paid for that. But below that is what appears to be a full reversal of that charge and it says “100% Bon Voyage”

what is that?

also, it appears my card was never charged for CHEERS

Maybe you were the one millionth guest to purchase Cheers?

If you pre-paid before getting on the ship it should show up at 0 cost on your sail-n-sign account, I believe that's what you're seeing.  Check your credit card statement, it'll most certainly show the charge.

Getting To Know Italy

How Do You Say BON VOYAGE in Italian?

Is someone you know going on a trip? Perhaps even to Italy? Say buon viaggio to wish them bon voyage in Italian!

Table of Contents

BON VOYAGE AND BUON VIAGGIO

Buon viaggio means have a good trip or have a good journey in Italian, just like bon voyage does in French. Buon means good in Italian, and viaggio means trip or journey , so buon viaggio literally means good trip , or good journey .

In French, bon means good , and voyage means trip/journey , so the French bon voyage has the same construction and meaning as the Italian buon viaggio .

The pronunciation of buon viaggio is: boo-OHN vee-AH-jee-oh

Listen to how to pronounce buon viaggio here:

A: Domani vado in Spagna. Tomorrow I’m going to Spain. B: Davvero? Buon viaggio! Really? Bon voyage!

Boy waves to old train and says in graphic speech bubble, 'Buon Viaggio!' You can see low, tree-covered mountains in the background.

ANOTHER WAY TO SAY BON VOYAGE IN ITALIAN

You can also tell someone to explicitly have a good trip by using the Italian verb fare in the imperative form ( l’imperativo ), otherwise known as the command form. Fare means to make or to do , as well as to have in this context.

Fai buon viaggio! means Have a good trip! in the informal singular you form. Use it when speaking to someone you know well.

Faccia buon viaggio! means Have a good trip! in the formal singular you form. Use it when speaking to someone you don’t know well, an elder, or someone with superior social status.

Fate buon viaggio! means Have a good trip! in the plural you form. Use it when speaking to a group.

USING THE WORD BUON

Buon isn’t just for trips! You can use the Italian word buon , or good , in a variety of situations, like to wish people a good day, a good weekend, a good vacation, a happy birthday , happy holidays , and much more.

Here are some examples:

In English, when we tell someone to have a good trip we often mean their whole vacation, not just the part when they are traveling. In Italian, buon viaggio refers to the journey part, when the person is traveling to their destination. If you’d like to give someone best wishes for their entire vacation, say buona vacanza , or buone ferie .

A SONG ABOUT BON VOYAGE! IN ITALIAN

The Italian singer-songwriter Cesare Cremonini’s 2015 hit Buon Viaggio (Share the Love), or Bon Voyage , encourages us to gather our courage to take that trip, no matter where it takes us.

Buon ascolto! Happy listening!

Donald 'Von ShitzInPantz' has now formally been entered into the public record at Trump's hush-money trial

  • Testimony in Donald Trump's New York trial was delayed Thursday by more gag-violation arguments.
  • "Everybody can say anything they want except for President Trump," his lawyer said.
  • Trump's lawyers flagged Biden's "stormy weather" and Michael Cohen's Donald "Von ShitzInPants" cracks.

Insider Today

Another week, another contempt-of-court hearing for former President Donald Trump — and this one was a doozy.

On Thursday morning, prosecutors at Trump's Manhattan hush-money trial argued that he violated his gag order last week when he made four on-camera statements attacking witnesses and the jury.

Things got weird when his defense attorney Todd Blanche complained that Trump must remain silent about witnesses and jurors while his opponents get to say "anything they want."

That's when President Joe Biden and Donald "Von ShitzInPants" made their bizarre cameo appearances on the official trial record.

Biden "mocked President Trump," Blanche told the judge, quoting into the record a joke the president had made Saturday at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner .

"Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it stormy weather," Biden quipped in a very apparent reference to Stormy Daniels, the porn star at the center of the hush-money trial.

"President Trump can't respond to that" by criticizing Daniels, Blanche said Thursday to the judge, state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan.

Likewise, Trump's personal attorney turned nemesis, Michael Cohen, can take whatever potshot he chooses, Blanche told the judge.

But Trump must remain silent, Blanche added, even when Cohen mocks him as Donald "Von ShitzInPantz," a favorite insult on Cohen's podcast and his account on the social-media site X.

Blanche proceeded to read that colorfully worded, offending post into the record as Trump sat listening at the defense table.

"This one says, oh my, ShitzInPantz," Blanche recited as he entered a screenshot of the post into the court record as Exhibit 64 — without any objection from prosecutors.

The official court stenographer duly followed along, typing the phrase into the court record as "shits in pants."

"Keep whining and crying and violating the gag order you petulant defendant," Blanche continued, quoting Cohen.

"Your attacks of me stink of desperation," Blanche continued, flipping to another social media post. "We are all hoping that you take the stand in your defense."

Hey Von ShitzInPantz…your attacks of me stink of desperation. We are all hoping that you take the stand in your defense. pic.twitter.com/FVsWbRnNkB — Michael Cohen (@MichaelCohen212) April 22, 2024

"Everybody can say anything they want except for President Trump," Blanche complained to the judge.

He read a few more Cohen posts into the record, along with screenshots entered as court exhibits. Again, Trump was required to remain seated to his left, listening and looking at the screenshots.

They included this direct Cohen taunt: "Keep messing with me Donald and I won't send any money to your commissary."

Last week, Cohen pledged to stop talking about Trump on X for as long as a month, until after his testimony in the trial is over.

Now, "Michael Cohen has gone on TikTok, nightly," and makes money from it, Blanche told the judge.

Please don’t forget about the witnesses…we also matter! https://t.co/raWyfmDk7o — Michael Cohen (@MichaelCohen212) April 16, 2024

Merchan has already found Trump in contempt of court for gag violations.

On Thursday, he fined the GOP frontrunner $9,000 for nine online attacks on witnesses and jurors.

The judge did not immediately rule on the four additional Trump statements now before him.

Prosecutors are asking that Trump be fined another $4,000, the maximum allowed, for the four on-camera statements he made last week.

Related stories

Contempt of court is punishable under New York law by as much as 30 days in jail per violation. The district attorney's office has not asked for jail.

However, prosecutors and the judge have warned that jail may be appropriate if there are future violations.

He's done it again

Trump continued to complain about the gag order at the end of the court day. Answering a question from Business Insider in the hallway outside of the courtroom, he said he couldn't respond to testimony earlier in the day from Stormy Daniels's lawyer Keith Davidson because he was "under a gag order."

"It's a very easy question. The easiest question so far," he said. "But I'm not allowed to testify because this judge is totally conflicted, has me under an unconstitutional gag order."

"Nobody has ever had that before, and we don't like it, and it's not fair," he continued. "Other people are allowed to do whatever they want to us, and I'm not allowed — as a presidential candidate, and a leading candidate, the Republican party nominee, and the one who's leading Biden by lot — and I'm not allowed to talk."

Christopher Conroy, one of the prosecutors, told the judge as Thursday morning's hearing began that Trump wasn't adhering to the order.

"He's already been found to have violated the order nine times, and he's done it again here," he said, referring to Trump's earlier statements about jurors, Cohen, Daniels, and former National Enquirer owner David Pecker .

Conroy was asking for $4,000 in new fines for Trump's most recent batch of four statements.

In one of the challenged statements, Trump said: "That jury was picked so fast." He also claimed the jury was "95% democrats."

Trump made that statement on Thursday, Conroy noted, "hours before he had a hearing here relating to his previous allegations."

In another challenged statement, from April 25, Trump praised the start of Pecker's testimony.

"He's been very nice," Trump told reporters of Pecker.

"This is classic carrot and stick," Conroy told the judge about a witness who "was going to be testifying an hour later."

This was Trump warning, "I have a platform," Conroy said, "so be nice."

In his other challenged statements, Trump called Cohen "a convicted liar" and condemned his lack of credibility.

Trump's gag violations have been "persistent and escalating," the prosecutor told the judge.

"His statements are corrosive to this proceeding and to the fair administration of justice," the prosecutor added.

'Not a man that needs protection'

The judge showed skepticism toward Blanche's argument that Trump "can't say anything."

"You're saying he can't respond to what President Biden said?" the judge asked Blanche at one point, his voice sounding incredulous. "There's nothing in the gag order that says he can't," the judge told Trump's lawyer.

But the judge also appeared sympathetic to Blanche's complaints that Cohen and Daniels enjoyed the protection of a gag order while having carte blanche to attack Trump — and continue to do so.

"They're not defendants in this case," Merchan said. "I can't extend a gag order to them. I just don't have the authority."

Merchan can, however, remove Cohen from the gag order's protection, something the judge suggested last week he would consider.

"They're all similar," Blanche said of Cohen's relentless jabs at Trump. "They're over the top about his character, about his candidacy."

The lawyer added of Cohen: "This is not a man that needs protection from the gag order."

This story has been updated.

‘Bon voyage soldier’: Regina Rifles WWII statue heads to France

‘Bon voyage soldier’: Regina Rifles WWII statue heads to France

A statue in honour of the WWII Royal Regina Rifles veterans is scheduled to be unveiled on the beaches of Normandy, France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. (Daniel Reech/980 CJME)

Saskatchewan said goodbye to a statue made in honour of some of its WWII veterans on Friday afternoon.

The eight-foot-tall bronze rifleman was created to honour the Royal Regina Rifles (formerly the Regina Rifles Regiment), who played a crucial role in the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. On June 6, 1944, the Rifles made it farther inland than any other infantry unit.

The statue is scheduled to make a quick overnight stop in Trenton, Ont., before heading to Juno Beach in Normandy – the same place the Rifles stormed almost 80 years ago. There, it will be officially unveiled for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

People in Regina had an opportunity to get a sneak peek of the statue outside the Legislature this past April.

“Bon voyage soldier, bon voyage,” said retired lieutenant-colonel Ed Staniowski at a media event.

Lt.-Col. Staniowski has been the lead planner for the project from its inception which has been dubbed “Operation Calvados”.

“It feels great, it’s (been) like two years of really hard work by a great committee and the Regiment and a whole bunch of people supporting the initiative,” Lt.-Col. Staniowski said.

It will be the last time Lt.-Col. Staniowski sees the statue until its official unveiling in Normandy.

“It’s about the legacy of the regiment and what they accomplished in two world wars in Europe,” Lt.-Col. Staniowski said.

Lt.-Col. Staniowski added that it was also a salute to members of the Rifles that served throughout history and today. The Rifles made up about 1,000 of the 14,000 to 15,000 Canadians that landed on the beaches on D-Day.

Sculptor Don Begg said the statue was designed to be noticeable from a distance. (Daniel Reech/980 CJME)

458 members of the Rifles died during the war. Kelsey Lonie, military historian with the Royal Regina Rifles trust committee, said that 15 current members of the Rifles will be in attendance at the unveiling ceremony in France.

She said a lot of detail went into designing the statue (which was created by sculptor Don Begg.) “We took a helmet from D-Day over to the sculptor so that we could get it just perfect. He reconstructed a rifle load of wood – a Bren gun so that he could get it to scale,” Lonie said.

“Everything is very accurate and the detailing on his face shows determination as he’s pushing forward to storm the beaches.”

The statue was also supposed to be previewed in Peepeekisis Cree Nation in April, but Lonie said it was unable to make the trip because the crate had been compromised. Instead, a small version of the statue was presented there during the ceremony.

Lonie said Indigenous soldiers represented about 20 per cent of the regiment’s soldiers from across Saskatchewan.

“There’s just so many stories of brave men who stormed the beach that day; being able to be a part of preserving their memory is (an) incredibly great honor for me to be a part of,” Lonie said. “I just hope that the legacy continues (and) the statue promotes further recognition of what Saskatchewan men did during the Second World War.”

Bonza budget airline in administration as flights across the country cancelled

People board plane on tarmac

Embattled regional airline Bonza has gone into administration after cancelling flights across the country on Tuesday and stranding potentially thousands of passengers.

Documents filed with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) reveal Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd was at 3.25pm declared "externally administered", with accounting and advisory firm Hall Chadwick appointed to the role.

In a media release on Tuesday afternoon, Hall Chadwick confirmed Bonza's fleet would be grounded until Thursday, May 2.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar have offered complimentary seats, where available, on their flights to passengers stranded mid-journey on Tuesday.

Bonza chief executive Tim Jordan released a statement on Tuesday morning saying all services would be "temporarily suspended" while discussions were held about the ongoing viability of the business.

The airline has not responded to requests for comment, but has published a statement on its website and app apologising to affected customers.

"We’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market," the statement reads.

Early Bonza flights in and out of its base on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, along with Melbourne legs to Rockhampton, Gladstone and Tamworth, were all cancelled on Tuesday morning.

Three Bonza planes were parked on the tarmac at Sunshine Coast Airport on Tuesday, including a Boeing 737-MAX aircraft named Bruce, which had been leased from Canadian low-cost airline Flair to fly in Australia.

Bonza's financial position has been the subject of intense speculation since its first flight early last year.

"The discussions regarding ongoing trading are occurring over the forthcoming days and the administrators will be in a position to update all stakeholders as the matter progresses," Hall Chadwick said.

Passengers stranded

Rona Wall caught a shuttle bus to the Sunshine Coast airport early on Tuesday morning hoping to catch a flight to Rockhampton, after her scheduled Bonza flight from the Gold Coast was cancelled on Monday.

She said she received multiple correspondences from Bonza about a rescheduled flight, which created a lot of confusion.

Two unhappy looking women sitting on a seat.

"I've got a text message that was in my younger daughter's name, and an email, and also [a message] on the app," Ms Wall said.

"All three notifications were for three different flights."

Nicole Morris was due to fly from Melbourne to Rockhampton on Tuesday with Bonza but was told her flight had been cancelled when she arrived at the airport.

"It's crap, I don't know what I'm meant to do," Ms Morris said.

"I've come in and I can't find anyone to talk to — there's nobody here."

Nicole Morris

Bonza said affected passengers had been told they would receive a full refund.

The federal Transport Department has set up a hotline for stranded passengers on the number 1800 069 244, which will operate until 10pm.

'They were told Bonza has finished'

A Sunshine Coast man whose wife works for the airline told the ABC about 20 cabin crew were called into a meeting early on Tuesday morning.

"There were two crews there — they were just basically told that Bonza has finished," he said.

"They've been told that they're not flying until further notice.

"They've all been told that the bottom line is that Bonza will no longer be flying."

He said the news was a blow for staff and the region.

"They're pretty devastated. It's their job. She's been in it from day one. It's a bit of a blow for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast," he said.

History of cancellations

After months of delay, Bonza was given the go-ahead to start flying regional routes from the Sunshine Coast in January last year.

It was the first new local airline since Tiger Airways launched 15 years earlier, and its business model aimed to link regional centres often ignored by the larger carriers.

The company launched a base in Melbourne two months later.

Since launching, Bonza has faced criticism for cancelling flights, including mass cancellations over Christmas , and suspending routes .

A spokeswoman for Bonza last week, when the company cut services from the Gold Coast,  said it was working on improving customer service due to passenger complaints.

'Devastating' for regional tourism

Bundaberg Tourism chief executive Katherine Reid said the news was devastating.

"We believe that the Melbourne to Bundaberg route has been one of the strongest performing in the state for Bonza, sitting at an average of 90 per cent capacity," she said.

Ms Reid said that equated to as many as 400 people a week coming from Victoria into the Wide Bay region.

"We know a lot of people have had holidays booked," she said.

"We need to continue working with all levels of government to really attract airline partners into regional areas."

Call for bailout

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce said he hoped the airline could "see their way out of" the situation but said the federal government could be doing more to help.

He wanted the government to consider a bailout package.

"Certainly consider it ... on the premise of a better market outcome for all passengers not just helping out one company," he said.

Close up of Robbie Katter

North West Queensland MP Robbie Katter said Bonza's struggles were a symptom of a bigger issue in the industry.

"It's disappointing because we need this competition," the Traegar MP said.

"The bigger guys will always make it as difficult as possible for airlines to enter the market and destroy the dominance they've got.

"I'll plan to push the government to underwrite these funds so that bush residents aren't left worse off."

'Burning money'

Aviation analyst Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the website Airline Ratings, said he understood the airline's backers, 777 partners, had made changes to the leasing and financing of its aircraft.

He said the budget carrier may have been caught off guard.

777 Partners has been contacted for comment.

a man in a suit smiles at camera

"It's shattering news, particularly for those affected who hold tickets and were going to fly today or tomorrow," Mr Thomas said.

"I think that the problem of Bonza is overseas, with leasing companies, and not the local management, not the business model."

But he said the low profit margin model could be tough in regional Australia, given long distances and relatively low passenger numbers.

"If you need 85 per cent capacity and you only get 70 per cent … then you're burning money," he said.
