A red 2024 Chevy Equinox EV is shown driving on a city street after visiting a Chevy dealer.

Which 2024 GM Models Have Super Cruise?

In recent years, automakers have been developing driver assistance technologies that help drivers avoid trouble on the road. Many of these automated features are now standard—like automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist—but if you’re willing to pay extra, some automakers have systems that go even further. Consider GM’s Super Cruise, which allows you to drive hands-free on over 400,000 miles of compatible roads across North America.

Not every model at a GMC, Cadillac, Buick, or Chevy dealer can be had with Super Cruise, and it’s often an optional feature reserved for higher trim levels, but it’s available on more vehicles in 2024 than ever before, and we can expect it to spread even further in the future. So let’s take a look at what this feature actually is (and what it isn’t) and then look at which models and trims you can find it on for the 2024 model year.

What Is Super Cruise?

Adaptive cruise control takes the basics of traditional cruise control but autonomously keeps pace with the traffic in front of you as it slows down and speeds back up. Super Cruise takes this concept to the next level by taking control of the steering as well, allowing drivers to take their foot off the pedal and their hands off the wheel.

But don’t get confused: this system does not make a vehicle a self-driving car, and you should never take your eyes off the road. If things get too complicated, you have to be ready to take over driving at a moment’s notice. Even so, this feature can be a big comfort on long-haul drives where it’s easy for fatigue to set in after hours of driving on the open highway.

Super Cruise is a complex system that combines several different pieces of technology beyond just adaptive cruise control and lane centering. It makes use of real-time cameras, radar sensors, GPS data, and LiDAR to keep track of both the road in front of you and the drivers around you. It also keeps track of the driver and gives them a warning if it senses that they’re no longer paying attention. In addition to simply handling steering and braking on compatible roads, Super Cruise can also change lanes automatically to avoid slow drivers, and it can be used while trailering.

Chevrolet Models

Chevy may be on the humble side compared to the rest of GM’s brands, but that doesn’t mean it’s not getting its fair share of advanced tech features. Super Cruise is available on a number of models across the lineup, but you’ll have to pay attention to both the trim levels and the available packages if you want to make sure you get it.

Since part of the appeal of electric vehicles (EVs) is how futuristic they are, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that all three electric models being introduced for the 2024 model year are available with Super Cruise. The feature comes standard on the Launch Edition of the Equinox EV , an electrified version of Chevy’s popular compact SUV, but once the regular lineup is in place, it will become an additional feature available only on the high-end 3LT and 3RS trims. The midsize Blazer EV—also an electrified version of an existing SUV nameplate—offers available Super Cruise only on the sporty SS trim.

When it comes to trucks, you won’t find Super Cruise on the 2024 Colorado or Silverado HD. But the most popular truck in Chevy’s stable—the full-size, light-duty Silverado 1500—does offer the feature on its top-tier High Country trim. It doesn’t come standard, though, so be sure to add on the Premium II Package to unlock it, along with a power sunroof and power-retractable assist steps, among other features. Super Cruise is also available on the new-for-2024 Silverado EV.

Finally, three models in Chevy’s non-EV SUV lineup can be had with Super Cruise. The midsize Traverse is entering a new generation for the 2024 model year, making Super Cruise available on the LT and Z71 trims and standard fare on the athletic RS. On the other hand, the full-size Tahoe and Suburban only make this feature available on the pricey Premier and High Country trims, and then only if you add on the Advanced Technology Package, which also includes enhanced automatic emergency braking and reverse automatic braking for added peace of mind.

A green 2024 Hummer EV is shown parked near a building.

GMC models tend to have a more upscale look and feel than their Chevy counterparts but still prioritize power and performance in their trucks and SUVs. The GMC equivalent to the Silverado 1500, the Sierra 1500, offers Super Cruise as an available feature on the luxury Denali and Denali Ultimate trims, as long as you opt for the Denali Reserve Super Cruise Package. The same is true for the full-size Yukon SUV and its XL variant, except the package you’re looking for is called the Advanced Technology Package.

The other GMC offering that includes Super Cruise is the Hummer . Once a symbol of gas-guzzling, the Hummer has been reborn as a fully electric vehicle, available as either an SUV or a pickup truck. Whichever body style you opt for, you’ll get Super Cruise as a standard feature across all trim levels.

Buick Models

Climbing up the General Motors luxury ladder, we come to Buick. Up until the 2024 model year, Super Cruise wasn’t available on any Buick vehicles, but the 2024 Envision —an upscale compact SUV—will change that. This model is also getting a makeover inside and out, giving it both the modern technology and looks to match.

Cadillac Models

GM’s luxury brand Cadillac has Super Cruise available across a range of cars and SUVs, both gas-powered and all-electric. The Lyriq is an EV SUV that made its debut for the 2023 model year, and its 2024 model offers Super Cruise as an available option across all trims. New for the 2024 model year, the Celestiq EV is a sleek, futuristic-looking car that can also be had with Super Cruise.

Both the CT4 and CT5 sedans offer available Super Cruise on the Premium Luxury trim. This feature is also available on the CT4-V and CT5-V, performance-oriented versions of the cars that are more powerful and designed for thrilling driving dynamics. The midsize XT6 can be had with Super Cruise on both the Premium Luxury and Sport trims.

For the 2024 model year, the full-size Escalade is getting a big upgrade. On the 2023 Escalade, Super Cruise was merely an available feature on all trim levels except for the base Luxury. But for 2024, this feature will be standard on all of those trim levels, from the Premium Luxury up to the Sport Platinum, on both the Escalade and the longer Escalade ESV.

A black 2024 Cadillac CT4 is shown parked on sand.

The Past, Present, and Future of Super Cruise

While Super Cruise is more available now than it was a few years ago, it’s still pretty rare to find it in a GM dealership—and it’s pretty easy to see why, as this feature is really a suite of several advanced features working together to perform a difficult task.

Whether this system will continue to improve incrementally across the lineup or whether it’s replaced with something new, like Ultra Cruise, for the moment, Super Cruise is an impressive piece of technology that can be put to use by drivers who understand it. We’ll be keeping an eye on future GM models to see if this feature’s availability continues to increase as the years go by.

GM’s Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving Feature Blew My Mind Over 2,000 Miles

On a road trip deep into Canada with the loaded GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate, one big thing stands out.

gm super cruise

By Steve Mazzucchi

As convenient as flying can be, some places are remote enough that driving makes more sense. Such is the case with Murdochville, Canada, a tiny town (2016 pop: 651) nearly 400 miles northeast of Quebec City.

That’s the decision three buddies and I made when we chose to check this locale — which serves as a base camp for some pretty killer backcountry skiing and splitboarding in the Chic-Choc Mountains — off the bucket list. As our destination was also 869 miles from my New York City apartment, this trip proved the perfect occasion to put GMC’s most tricked-out SUV, the Yukon Denali Ultimate , through its paces.

Now, a lot of things stand out about this nearly $100,000 rig , including the boss 18-speaker Bose sound system, massage-ready front seats, luxurious wood-and-leather-lined interior, running boards that automatically deploy whenever you open the doors and tons of space for four dudes and all their ski and snowboard gear . But as we took the YDU on a nearly 2,000-mile adventure, one futuristic feature truly dominated our chatter: GM’s hands-free driving tech, known as Super Cruise. Here’s why — complemented by some Canadian atmosphere showing off the vehicle, of course.

Super Cruise Is Super Smart

gm super cruise

I remember trying out Tesla’s self-driving feature several years ago on a test drive. While I was impressed, it still felt like a novelty. I had similar feelings about Super Cruise until I began playing with it on the relatively short drive from NYC to my buddy Giuseppe’s place in New Paltz the day before we’d make the nearly 800-mile push from there to Murdochville.

I started with simple cruise control and adaptive braking, which is pretty handy for giving your foot a rest on the highway. Then, at the touch of a button, the light bar on the steering wheel illuminated blue and then green, and Super Cruise was happening .

The most striking thing is once you set a cruise control speed, you’ve empowered the vehicle to do what it can to maintain it, most notably by using its cameras and radar to detect road markings and other vehicles. Doing so, it can then not only stay in its lane but also engage the turn signal and automatically change lanes when the moment’s right. If you set the cruise control speed high enough, you’ll be zigging and zagging through traffic like a robotic Lewis Hamilton.

But You’ve Gotta Stay Engaged — and That’s a Good Thing

gm super cruise

It’s kind of scary how quickly I came to trust Super Cruise and let it do its thing while I rocked out to the Allman Brothers at 75 miles an hour. On that very first drive, I was texting Giuseppe brief updates on my ETA, and the next morning, after rolling out at 5:30 a.m., I let it handle much of the highway action, even while I chowed down on some breakfast empanadas picked up at our first pit stop.

But that isn’t to say you can watch TikToks or snooze while driving. A small camera on the dashboard tracks your head and eye movement, and if it senses a lack of attention, Super Cruise deactivates: the seat vibrates, the green light bar blinks and then turns red and the display tells you to grab the wheel and take control. It’s not quite as dramatic as, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger overpowering a Johnny Cab , but if you don’t respond, the vehicle will literally slow to a stop.

Giuseppe handled half of the miles and learned firsthand that Super Cruise has little tolerance for smartphone-addled drivers. He told me that while I was napping in the back, he texted one too many times — the system completely shut down and made him wait several minutes to engage Super Cruise again.

Super Cruise’s “Butt Haptics” Are Quirky

gm super cruise

Along with the light bar and the display behind the steering wheel that indicates such usual metrics as your speed, cruise control speed and lane changes, the most noticeable sign of Super Cruise is what I call “butt haptics.”

Basically, anytime the vehicle goes to make a lane change — or it senses you doing something inadvisable, like veering out of your lane or backing into a snowbank — the seat vibrates. It has a bit of a language, too: a buzz on the left cheek when it’s switching to the left lane and one on the right cheek when it’s headed that way.

It takes some getting used to and sometimes feels superfluous, but I did find some of the pulsing kind of helpful and safety-enhancing in its own weird way. Speaking of weird, here’s a funky thing you can do when Super Cruise is engaged — flick the turn signal stalk on the highway, and if the road is clear, the vehicle will change lanes without you doing another thing.

Super Cruise Doesn’t Always Work — and Some of Its Moves Are Disconcerting

gm super cruise

Not long after we crossed the border into Canada, I got a notification I hadn’t before: “Super Cruise Unavailable.” We all began to theorize that maybe the whole damn thing doesn’t work in Canada for Byzantine legal reasons.

We were totally wrong. Later on, it worked just fine. Basically, as long as there are clearly visible lane markings, the system seems able to function. But if the road is covered in snow — or it’s a dirt road like the one we encountered on one of our splitboarding jaunts — you’re SOL.

That’s understandable, but I do want to note a couple of moments where the AI gave me pause. First, if you set the cruise control too fast, it can occasionally accelerate into turns in a way no human would. Second, when it comes to passing large vehicles like semi trucks, a human driver typically will give them a wide berth. Super Cruise passes them like it would any other vehicle, and unless you like the feeling of “buzzing the tower,” so to speak, it can feel a bit freaky.

Super Cruise Is a Major Conversation Piece… for Now

gm super cruise

Even with these quirks, however, the title of this story is accurate: Super Cruise really did blow my mind, and of all the features people commented on during this very long road trip — we drove all the way back in one day — it was easily top of the list. When our buddies thanked Giuseppe and I for driving, we felt kind of sheepish, like an airline captain who uses autopilot for everything but takeoffs and landings.

One thing that really stands out is something the YDU didn’t do, which is leave me feeling totally exhausted upon arrival at our lodgings after some 14 hours on the road. That says a ton for both the comfy interior and certainly for Super Cruise. It’s pretty awesome to endure such a punishing drive and wake up the next morning refreshed and ready to tackle a mountain.

GM has done impressive work creating a system that safely and efficiently makes driving less taxing, essentially letting the driver monitor highway maneuvers and take over when necessary. That alone makes Super Cruise something to talk about — while wondering how long it will be till such functionality is so standard it is taken for granted. As someone who still appreciates manual shifting , I hope that day doesn’t come too soon.

GM is expanding its hands-free Super Cruise system to 400,000 miles of roads

what models have gm super cruise

GM will soon allow drivers to use Super Cruise on more than 400,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada, doubling access to its hands-free driver assistance system as it pushes to keep apace of its rivals.

Drivers with vehicles equipped with Super Cruise today can only use the system on about 200,000 miles of divided interstates. Notably, this new expansion will loosen those restrictions and give drivers access to Super Cruise on undivided highway roads such as the Pacific Coast Highway, the Trans-Canada Highway and U.S. Route 66.

Super Cruise uses a combination of lidar map data, high-precision GPS, cameras and radar sensors, as well as a driver attention system, which monitors the person behind the wheel to ensure they’re paying attention. When the system is activated, it will accelerate or brake to maintain a selected following distance from a vehicle ahead, steer to keep its lane position and on select models, automatic change lanes to pass slower traffic.

Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system, users of Super Cruise do not need to have their hands on the wheel. However, their eyes must remain directed straight ahead.

The automaker said Wednesday that an over-the-air software update later this year will expand the network for new vehicles built on its new vehicle intelligence platform (VIP) electrical architecture. The upgrade is free on these models. VIP architected vehicles with available Super Cruise currently include the Cadillac Escalade, CT4 and CT5, the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra, and the Chevrolet Silverado. Super Cruise will soon be available on the 2023 model year Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.

GM has been slower than rival Tesla in making its advanced driver assistance accessible. Tesla’s ADAS that is branded Autopilot comes standard in its four models and works on most roads. GM has restricted access, not just where it can be used, but in what vehicles as well.

When GM launched Super Cruise, it was only available in one Cadillac model — the full-size CT6 sedan — and restricted to divided highways. GM eventually added Super Cruise to other Cadillac models, including the CT4, CT5 and Escalade as well as other brands such as Chevrolet and GMC.

GM is also working on a new, more capable hands-free driving assistance system product called Ultra Cruise that it plans to roll out in 2023 and will be able to handle 95% of all driving scenarios and eventually be used on every paved road in the U.S. and Canada.

2025 Buick Enclave First Look: Hands-Free Driving and a Swanky Interior

The third-generation enclave goes on sale in late summer.

2025 Buick Enclave front 3/4

  • Fully redesigned 2025 Enclave arrives this summer.
  • New turbo engine and optional Super Cruise hands-free driving tech are welcome additions.
  • The SUV's interior is nicer than ever and includes a 30-inch curved touchscreen display.

The Enclave is Buick's flagship; it's the brand's largest and most luxurious SUV. For its third generation, that statement is more accurate than ever, thanks to the addition of General Motors' Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system, a big in-car tech upgrade and generally fancier accommodations.

Buick says the new Enclave is larger than its predecessor, and the SUV wears updated styling that better brings it in line with the brand's other SUVs. Influence from the 2022 Wildcat concept is evident up front, and Buick's done a good job of differentiating the Enclave from its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Traverse .

Arriving at dealers in late summer, the 2025 Buick Enclave comes with a new, turbocharged engine, replacing the outgoing V6. Buyers will be able to choose from base Preferred, sporty-looking ST and premium Avenir grades, and all Enclave trims can be had with front- or all-wheel drive. Pricing is still TBD, but we expect the 2025 Enclave to start in the mid-to-high $40,000s.

Standard turbo power

All 2025 model-year Enclaves get a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Buyers can also spec a tow package that adds extra engine cooling, upping the SUV's max trailering rating to 5,000 pounds. A 1,500-pound tow rating is standard.

Compared to the outgoing Enclave with its 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6, the new 2.5-liter turbo-four has an additional 18 hp and 60 lb-ft of torque. Buick also says this new powertrain is more efficient, so expect small gains over the previous Enclave's EPA estimates of 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway).

The Enclave Preferred and ST — for Sport Touring — come standard with 20-inch wheels, while the Avenir rides on 22-inchers. The high-zoot Avenir comes with adaptive dampers, and all Enclaves have Buick's signature QuietTuning, with additional insulation to keep wind and road noise out of the cabin.

2025 Buick Enclave interior

How's the Enclave's interior?

Super nice, actually. We had the chance to poke around midgrade ST and top-trim Avenir trims at a backgrounder event outside of Detroit, and the focus on attention to detail is really noticeable. More than ever before, the Enclave has a level of fit and finish that better rivals its luxury-brand counterparts. We especially love the two-tone blue-and-cream cabin offered on the Enclave Avenir.

All Enclaves have seating for seven passengers, and plush second-row captain's chairs are available. A large cargo area is accessed via a hands-free liftgate (no kick necessary; just approach with the key in your pocket and it opens), and the rear seats can be folded electronically.

Super Cruise hands-free driving joins other new tech

The Enclave gets a swanky new 30-inch curved display, housing both a digital gauge cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system. It looks great, and thankfully, unlike some other new GM vehicles, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still included — with wireless connectivity, to boot.

But the biggest upgrade for the 2025 Enclave is the inclusion of GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving tech. It's available as an option on all Enclave trim levels and offers genuine hands-free driving capabilities on hundreds of thousands of miles of premapped roads in the United States and Canada. GM says that, by the end of 2025, Super Cruise will work on more than 750,000 miles of roadways across North America.

Plenty of other driving aids are standard on the Enclave, including blind-spot steering assist, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistance and more.

Edmunds says

Nicer-looking and more luxurious than before, the 2025 Enclave is better positioned to be a hit in the ultra-competitive three-row luxury SUV space.

GM is preparing for another major expansion of its hands-free Super Cruise system

By 2025, the automaker says super cruise will be operational on approximately 750,000 miles of road in the us and canada, including more rural, back woods roads..

By Andrew J. Hawkins , transportation editor with 10+ years of experience who covers EVs, public transportation, and aviation. His work has appeared in The New York Daily News and City & State.

Over-the-shoulder shot of a person using Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver-assistance technology, in a Cadillac Escalade.

General Motors may be struggling when it comes to fully autonomous driving , but the company is still feeling bullish about the future of hands-free driving. Today, it announced plans to expand its Super Cruise advanced driver-assist system, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on certain roads, to cover nearly double the number of miles it did before.

Today, Super Cruise is operational on 400,000 miles of road in the US and Canada. The company plans on adding around 40,000 miles of new roads every quarter over the course of two years, so by the end of 2025, Super Cruise will cover approximately 750,000 miles in the US and Canada.

Launched in 2017 with the Cadillac CT6, Super Cruise uses information from cameras and radar sensors embedded in the car, GPS data, and lidar mapping data to allow for hands-free driving and, in some cases, automatic lane changes. It pairs this capability with a driver-monitoring system that uses an infrared camera to make sure the driver is keeping their eyes on the road at all times in case Super Cruise needs to hand back control to the driver.

  • Hands-free driving is becoming more popular — but is it safe?

For years, Super Cruise was limited to divided highways that GM had laser mapped and approved for use. But starting with its model year 2023 vehicles, the company started adding nondivided state and federal highways, which are sometimes called routes — main roads that connect smaller cities and towns. That includes popular roads like US Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway, and the Trans-Canada Highway.

GM says it will continue to add more routes and nondivided highways over the next few years to expand Super Cruise’s operational domain. According to David Craig, chief of maps at GM, these will include “two lane highways that are designed to connect the little towns, the more rural areas, the back woods areas where people take their RVs and campers and go hiking and hunting and camping.”

“the more rural areas, the back woods areas”

For its mapping data, GM contracts with a Michigan-based company called Dynamic Map Platform, which operates a fleet of vehicles that scan “every mile of road” using lidar laser sensors, Craig said. Those maps are then fed back into GM’s central system, which pushes out quarterly software updates to ensure each vehicle is operating with the most updated version of the map.

Super Cruise’s capabilities will remain the same, and the system won’t be able to handle any new driving scenarios, like traffic lights and four-way stops, said Jeff Miller, product manager for Super Cruise.

The company recently stopped using its “Ultra Cruise” brand , which was intended to be its big Tesla competitor, deciding instead to merge the team that was working on it with its Super Cruise division. Ultra Cruise was intended to cover “95 percent of driving scenarios” on over 2 million miles of road.

To be sure, GM says it is approaching the concept of hands-free driving as safely and cautiously as it can. Miller contrasts this approach with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, which still retains its status as a beta product despite being available to over 400,000 Tesla owners in North America.

“We’re not going to beta test on our customers,” he said, “like some other competitors do.”

Still, GM is chasing Tesla in some respects. The electric automaker’s Full Self-Driving program is operational on local roads and residential streets and purports to handle more complex situations like roundabouts, traffic lights, and four-way stops. How well it handles these scenarios is open to debate, as regulators and safety experts continue to evaluate and study the technology.

What is clear is that dozens of people have died while using Tesla Autopilot, and at least one person appears to have been killed in a crash while using Full Self-Driving. Miller says that is not the case with Super Cruise.

“Our customers have driven Super Cruise completely hands-free 160 million miles,” he said, “and there has not been one accident attributed to Super Cruise.”

Which is not to say there won’t be an accident someday, especially as Super Cruise expands its map and becomes available to more customers. “I mean, there could be,” Miller said. “We designed the system as robustly as possible.”

GM expands Super Cruise tech for use on 400K miles of roadways

what models have gm super cruise

Customers driving General Motors Co.'s vehicles with the Super Cruise hands-free driving technology soon will have access to double the amount of miles where they can use the technology, GM said Wednesday.

The Detroit automaker is expanding Super Cruise availability from 200,000 miles to 400,000 miles of roadways in the U.S. and Canada, included undivided highways. The technology was previously only offered on mapped divided highways or interstates. A few known routes with large sections coming online in the expansion include: U.S. Route 66, California State Route 1,  U.S. Route 1 and the Trans-Canada Highway.

Super Cruise is available as an option on new vehicles built on the VIP electrical architecture.

The expansion will be available later this year on previously sold model year 2021 and 2022 vehicles with that architecture. It will be offered at no additional charge over-the-air on Super Cruise-equipped models, which have included the Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade, GMC Hummer EV and electric Cadillac Lyriq. It will also be available on some new 2023 model year vehicles.

GM still intends to have Super Cruise on 22 models sold in the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2023, but the chip shortage has affected its ability to offer Super Cruise on some of the equipped vehicles.

"We continue to work through the chip shortage," said Mario Maiorana, Super Cruise chief engineer. "We continue to balance the usage across our products ... the customer has the option of buying with or without Super Cruise but yes, there are challenges there that we continue to manage."

Pricing for the Super Cruise option varies by brand. For Cadillacs, the technology is priced at $2,500. It's available on: 2021-2023 Escalade, 2023 Escalade-V, select 2021-2023 CT4, CT4-V, CT5 and CT5-V, 2022-2023 XT6 and the 2023 Lyriq.

Super Cruise is also offered on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country, 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Premier and Redline trim levels only for $2,200.

The self-driving technology is also offered on the the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali and comes standard on the 2022 Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate. The cost is included in content packages, GM said.

Super Cruise uses precision LiDAR map data, real-time cameras, radars and GPS for the hands-free driving experience. The system will accelerate and brake, it steers to maintain lane position, and on certain models, can perform lane changes.

GM's expansion of the automated driving system comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has expanded a probe into Tesla Inc. for its Autopilot driver-assistance technology after several crashes.

"We're always working with NHTSA. We talked to them about these types of expansions," Maiorana said. "We talked to them about our strategy with respect to driver attention, so we're having regular conversation with them. We'd like to have an open relationship there and discuss these types of significant changes."

GM's Super Cruise monitors drivers closely to make sure they can grab the wheel when necessary. The driver attention system is "very key" to safety, Maiorana said.

"We believe that is the linchpin of safety for our system in that we are ensuring the driver is always attentive and aware because there's situations that can be thrown at you at any point in time," he said.

Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights, sees Super Cruise as "the best system on the market today out of everything I've tried so far. It does a better job of keeping the vehicle steady in the center of the lane."

And the Super Cruise driver monitoring system is "more capable and robust." But he's not totally convinced that hands-free driving systems are a good idea because drivers can still get "complacent and not pay enough attention," he said.

"GM does a pretty good job of that with the driver monitoring system. But when you have to continue watching the road ... I'm not convinced that it's actually more relaxing."

Review: Super Cruising in a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado

C hevrolet has given its Silverado lineup a broad range of powertrains, trim levels, and cab configurations to capture a huge swath of the pickup truck market. The Silverado’s current generation , first launched in 2019, continues to adapt and improve. We recently nabbed a highly optioned 1500 High Country to see how its newest tech stacks up.

The Silverado 1500 remains a very comfortable place to spend your time, with a roomy cabin for both rows of seats and a pleasant ride that shakes off poor pavement surfaces and isolates the driver and passengers from both road and wind noise. Even when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels as our tester included, the ride quality was top-notch.

Since we’ve driven plenty of the current-generation Silverado in various trims , one of our top priorities was to experience Super Cruise hands-free driving. Our test drive coincided with a recent expansion of Super Cruise availability, as the compatibility now includes 750,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada. Major freeways and highways were among the first to roll out, but the expansion now also includes smaller connecting highways.

We tried Super Cruise on some of Southern California’s biggest freeways as well as some of its smaller, windier ones. To use Super Cruise, the driver must first engage adaptive cruise control. That makes perfect sense, especially if you consider adaptive cruise control as the next step in driver assistance above standard cruise control, and then Super Cruise as its progression. If the vehicle is on a compatible highway, pressing the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel will start the system and inform the driver to keep their eyes on the road. A camera mounted on the steering column keeps tabs on the driver to ensure they’re paying attention. We drove during the day, at night, and in the rain, and Super Cruise was only stymied on a few occasions. One such example was a curving portion of a small, two-lane highway when we couldn’t engage Super Cruise even though the road appeared to be part of the system’s network. Instead, we were told that our speed, which was keeping up with the flow of traffic, was too great. Okay, we may have been over the speed limit, fair enough. Once we dropped our speed a bit, Super Cruise took the wheel.

Specs: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country

  • Price: $68,095/$78,110 (Base/as tested)
  • Powertrain: 6.2-liter V-8, 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Output: 420 hp, 460 lb-ft of torque
  • Layout: Four-wheel-drive, four-door, five-passenger full-size pickup truck
  • Curb Weight: est. 5100 lb
  • EPA Fuel Economy: 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, 17 mpg combined
  • Competitors: Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra

We have to admit, we’re still getting used to the concept of hands-free driving. With just a few hours of experience, the process is a bit disconcerting. On straight sections, the vehicle’s course corrections match what you’d expect from a human driver. On curves, however, the minute steering corrections seem odd. The constant small adjustments happen about twice a second. Although these adjustments don’t look smooth, they don’t transmit to the occupants, either. It’s just that watching the adjustments of the wheel, you can almost picture a computer anxiously muttering to itself as it makes its way through a curve.

The one downside to Super Cruise is that it is very conservative. Of course, that’s how you’d hope it operates. However, when surrounded by other drivers who are assertive or even aggressive with their passing, Super Cruise’s automatic lane-change function can meet its match.

For example, when approaching a driver in the number two lane who is going under the speed limit when there’s no good reason to do so, Super Cruise will match that vehicle’s speed at a safe distance. Now two vehicles are driving slower than the flow of traffic, and everyone driving with the flow of traffic will make moves to get around them both. Despite the Silverado’s 420-hp V-8 and a responsive 10-speed transmission, Super Cruise will wait, left turn-signal blinking, looking for a large opening in traffic before initiating a lane change. The maneuver is aborted if anything fills whatever void that Super Cruise deems large enough to be safe for a lane change. All of this information is relayed via the driver information center dead ahead in the dash, so it’s not a surprise.

After a few of these aborted passes, however, we took over for Super Cruise, stomped on the gas, and easily made the pass. If we hadn’t intervened, normal traffic would have kept passing and Super Cruise would have been happy to follow at a safe distance behind the 55-mph rolling chicane. That said, it’s exactly how you’d hope a driver-assist system would function. Any driver-assist function naturally requires some sort of trust, and Super Cruise helps build that trust by being conservative and communicating with the driver.

With the speed, following distance, and course corrections handled by Super Cruise, the driver can focus on surrounding vehicles, upcoming traffic, and road hazards. For our short trips, Super Cruise remained a novelty. On longer trips, the ability to relax your shoulders, sit back, and delegate the monotonous course corrections to Super Cruise could help reduce fatigue and improve alertness.

Whether you trust an advanced driver-assistance system in your vehicle is up to you, but that could change over time. If GM’s Super Cruise , Ford’s Blue Cruise , and the like continue to improve with oversight that helps steer things along a safe course , perhaps many of those who resist the technology will be won over. We were once skeptical of adaptive cruise control, just as there once were those who scoffed at plain old cruise control when it was introduced.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country

Highs:  The Silverado remains roomy, comfortable, and powerful. Super Cruise expansion brings impressive coverage and an intuitive interface.

Lows:  Luxurious High Country trim still plays second fiddle to its GMC Sierra Denali cousin.

Takeaway:  The Silverado continues to impress, but with the pickup market stretching even more upscale, there’s probably room in the lineup to bring the High Country some flashier interior colors and luxury amenities. Super Cruise could help it win some customers.

2024 Buick Envision Priced Starting at $37,295, Gets Huge 30-Inch Screen

The facelifted Envision ditches front-wheel drive, and it won't have GM's Super Cruise hands-free system available as originally planned.

2024 buick envision

  • There's a brand-new 30-inch screen unit housing gauge cluster and central infotainment duties.
  • Buick has also canceled its plan to include Super Cruise on the 2024 Envision, choosing to debut it at a later date instead.

Buick's all-SUV lineup has been undergoing some changes recently with the company most recently updating the 2024 Envision. We first saw the handsome redesign back in June , but the company has released new information about the revamped Envision as the SUV's summer arrival draws nearer.

2024 buick envision

As with the other recently updated Buick models, pricing is broken down into three trim levels, with the Envision ditching the old mid-level Essence in favor of a new Sport Touring trim. The barrier of entry for the Envision has risen to meet the more modern SUV, with pricing for the entry-level Preferred trim jumping $2500 to start at $37,295. The new Sport Touring trim adds 20-inch alloy wheels in place of the standard 18s and starts a further $2500 above the Preferred, ringing in at $39,795.

Upgrading to the top-trim Avenir means forking over quite a bit more dough, with the flagship model carrying a base price of $48,395. Springing for the top trim adds convenience features such as a heated steering wheel, multi-zone A/C, and standard remote engine start.

Unlike the system that debuted in the Encore GX, which pairs an 8.0-inch gauge cluster and an 11.0-inch central infotainment under one piece of glass, all Envision models have a comparatively huge, ultrawide 30-inch touchscreen display. According to Buick, the system allows owners to customize the screen to display the information they deem most important. The system uses customizable widgets to provide navigation, media, or general vehicle information. The system runs natively with Google built in, and wireless versions of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

No Super Cruise (for Now)

Unfortunately, the Envision will not come equipped with GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving assistant, as was originally planned. The brand scrapped the technology for the revamped SUV before launch. According to Buick, as timelines for the Envision shifted, so did the launch of Super Cruise–equipped Buicks. Fortunately for fans of the technology, a Buick representative confirmed to Car and Driver that the brand remains committed to adding the system to its vehicles in the future.

This is the first we've seen of the Envision's updated interior in all its glory. In addition to the new screen, the front and rear seats are redesigned, as are the dash and center console. Buick also stepped up the two-tone look for the Envision, especially with the Slate Blue wrapping around the top of the dash and front door cards.

Little has changed in the performance department, with the 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine returning as the sole mill. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is now standard, as Buick has dropped the previously standard front-wheel drive from the lineup.

The Envision is set to begin arriving at dealerships this summer.
