Ruva Ngwenya’s powerful performance as Tina Turner is a revelation in this flawed but fierce biographic jukebox musical
After an unforgettable run that saw 301 performances and 301 standing ovations, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is preparing to take the final bow of its Syndey season on Sunday, January 28, 2024. The show is a record-breaker for Theatre Royal Sydney , becoming the longest-running production since the iconic venue’s reopening and shattering sales records during its launch in May 2023. The national tour kicks off in Perth in February, followed by seasons in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Read on for our critic's review...
Australia loves Tina Turner – the one-two punch of her appearance, both in the film and on the soundtrack of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and the use of her cover of Bonnie Tyler’s The Best to promote the NRL back in the day made sure of that. Will they love Tina , the acclaimed jukebox musical based on her life and, naturally enough, packed with her tunes? Well, yes, probably – as long as your appreciation of that music outweighs the shortcomings of the writing.
That writing is by Pulitzer-winner Katori Hall, along with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, but as a piece of drama Tina struggles to encompass the life of its subject. We begin in Tina’s childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee, when the pre-fame protagonist – then simply Anna Mae Bullock – was deserted by her mother (Ibinabo Jack). We then follow her through her soaring career and abusive, drug-sodden relationship with Ike Turner (a role carried well by Tim Omaji), her eventual break from him, forays into solo work, and ultimately her ascent into superstardom under the stewardship of Australian manager, Roger Davies (Mat Verevis, doubling down on Australianisms), along the way finding love with German PR rep Erwin Bach (Matthew Prime). They’re still together, as it happens, and both are executive producers here.
Ruva Ngwenya is revelatory, fully embodying the real deal’s strength, charisma, power, and talent.
The issue is that Tina has difficulty covering so much territory, even at two hours and 45 minutes (interval included), which means that Act One gallops through the decades, each short interstitial scene between musical numbers being reduced to largely expository dialogue as characters clue us in as to where we are in the story. Add to that the fact that the story covers so much dark, serious territory – domestic violence and abuse, drugs, endemic racism, attempted suicide – and it feels at times that those themes are being treated lightly. They’re the price we have to grudgingly pay to get to the good stuff, and the show gets them out of the way quickly and efficiently, but sacrifices emotional impact to do so – compare the result to what we’ve read in Turner’s three autobiographies, or in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It?
But then we do get to the good stuff, which is the music – and, based solely on its songs, Tina is an all-timer. How could it not be? ‘Proud Mary’, ‘River Deep - Mountain High’, ‘Private Dancer’, ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’ – we even get ‘The Best’ and Thunderdome’s ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ for extra local appeal, with 23 songs in total over the course of the show. The second act improves on the first, not having to cover so much and instead focusing on Turner’s rise from Vegas perennial to stadium-filling rock goddess.
As the adult Tina, Ruva Ngwenya is revelatory, fully embodying the real deal’s strength, charisma, power, and talent. Here we follow the creation of ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’, the lead single off turner’s comeback album Private Dancer . Director Leah Howard and music director Christine Polimos do something clever here, taking us through several iterations of the signature tune before revealing it as the powerhouse ballad we all know. Turner’s ascension to stadium status is accompanied by the show’s band taking the stage, the final movements of the show more tribute act than musical – which brought the packed opening night audience to its feet.
Set and costume designer Mark Thompson keeps the former spare and the latter flashy, letting a simple, elegant backdrop and a few props set each scene, helped by projections by Jeff Sugg and impactful washes of light by Bruno Poet. The occasional use of a revolving stage element is the only noticeable flourish, but the clear intent to foreground performance, and the songs pay dividends. Anthony Van Laast’s choreography is exciting, reaching a crescendo of referential movements by the explosive final act.
Tina is flawed, it must be said, and it’s tempting to imagine how Turner’s story might fare in a different on-stage presentation – a one woman show, perhaps? But its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. It strains under the weight of some of its subject matter, particularly in the first act, but more than brings it home in the second. Come, then, for the music – but if you’re after Tina’s story, it’s better told in her own voice.

Tina Turner turns to 2023 for Australia
NSW Minister for Tourism, Stuart Ayres together with TEG DAINTY, Stage Entertainment and Tali Pelman, in association with Tina Turner are thrilled to announce that the smash hit TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL is coming to Theatre Royal Sydney, Australia in May 2023!
NSW Minister for Tourism, Stuart Ayres said, “Tina Turner is a global icon of music, her songs are timeless classics and her personal life story is one that resonates with so many people. TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL is a critically-acclaimed global sensation that will appeal to a variety of audiences, from young fans to seasoned theatregoers, to people who just love great live music. This universal appeal is why the NSW Government has secured its Australian premiere for Sydney. It will be a major drawcard for visiting and local audiences, cementing Sydney’s position as the nation’s capital of live theatre and providing a significant boost to the state’s visitor economy. TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL is another fantastic addition to the calendar of world-class Australian premiere productions the NSW Government is building to deliver on our goal of making Sydney and NSW the major events capital and premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific.”
Produced by TEG DAINTY in special collaboration with Stage Entertainment, Tali Pelman and Tina Turner, the musical reveals a comeback story like no other, of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race to become the global Queen of Rock n’ Roll. TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL is a celebration of resilience and an inspiration of triumph over adversity.
Tina Turner has sent a message of joy: “Hello Sydney! I am so excited to be announcing that TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL will be opening in Sydney next year. Australia has always shared abundant love with me, going back to my early concerts in the late 70’s through the uplifting partnership with the National Rugby League. It is very special for me that we will be reunited. The joy, passion and message of resilience in my musical is so important now as ever. Thank you from the bottom my heart for welcoming me with open arms once again.”
Written by Tony Award nominee and Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL is directed by Tony Award nominee Phyllida Lloyd with choreography by Tony Award nominee Anthony van Laast, set and costume designs by Tony Award nominee Mark Thompson, musical supervision, additional music and arrangements by Nicholas Skilbeck, lighting by Tony Award nominee Bruno Poet, sound by Tony Award nominee Nevin Steinberg, projection design by Tony Award nominee Jeff Sugg, orchestrations by Tony Award nominee Ethan Popp and wigs, hair and makeup design by Drama Desk Award winner Campbell Young Associates.
This new musical based on the life of legendary artist Tina Turner and presented in association with Tina Turner herself, received its world premiere in April 2018 in London, where it opened to five-star reviews and has broken box office records at the Aldwych Theatre. In March 2019, the German production opened at Stage Operettenhaus in Hamburg, the Broadway production followed in November 2019 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Dutch production opened at the Beatrix Theater, Utrecht, in February 2020. A third European production opened in Fall 2021 at the Teatro Coliseum in Madrid, Spain and the North American Tour will commence in September 2022.
Producer, Tali Pelman noted, “I know Australia is very close to Tina’s heart, so we are especially excited to announce our opening in Sydney. Our musical is about how Tina became not only the music icon we adore, but the woman who continues to motivate and inspire us today. Everything about Tina is unique – her heart, her story and of course her voice – and we can’t wait for Australians to experience her journey and her triumph through our show.”
One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history.
When she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in October, 2021, Tina Turner became one of only three women in the institution’s history to be inducted twice (she was initially inducted in 1991, alongside Ike Turner).

What to Watch For
From humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them. This new stage musical reveals the untold story of a woman who dared to defy the bounds of her age, gender and race.
One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history.
TINA - The Tina Turner Musical first premiered in London at the Aldwych Theatre in April 2018 and opened on Broadway in November 2019. The Australian premiere opened in May 2023 at the iconic Theatre Royal Sydney.
The Queen of Rock n’ Roll provided her stamp of approval. That is to say, Turner was on hand for the musical’s creative evolution and gave the go-ahead for each character’s depiction and even their moves. In fact, Turner herself taught her original onstage counterpart, Adrienne Warren , how to do her signature move, the Pony.
While it would be nearly impossible to include the entire Tina Turner songbook into a single musical (that would be one long show), don’t expect any skimping. There are a massive 21 songs in TINA - The Tina Turner Musical — and yes, they’re the ones you want to hear and maybe even a few you weren’t expecting. Just like Turner herself, this musical is full of surprises.
Did you know that Tina Turner is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for selling more concert tickets than any solo performer in history? She has sold more than 200 million albums and singles worldwide to date, which makes her one of the biggest selling female artists in music history.
The American-born singer and actress chose to give up her American citizenship in 2013 after becoming a citizen of Switzerland.
Audiences should know that they’re in the most-competent jukebox hands with English talented director and producer Phyllida Lloyd , best known for directing one of the most universally beloved jukebox shows of all time, Mamma Mia! and film The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep .
TINA - The Tina Turner Musical marks the first foray into libretto for award-winning book writer Katori Hall who made history as the first Black woman to win the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2010 for The Mountaintop.

How Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Relationship Has Changed After Spending Tour Break Together
As Taylor Swift gets ready for the next leg of her international Eras Tour, she is also preparing to part ways with boyfriend Travis Kelce again. The pair have been dating since 2023, and have had to manage very different and distant obligations. Luckily, a source says that “all the time they’ve spent together recently” in between tour dates has “deepened their bond.”
The source added that the couple took “a trip up the California coast” after Swift’s new album release of The Tortured Poets Department to “celebrate privately,” saying, “They’re making the most of the time they have together.”
The pair were not entirely alone—they were seen in Carmel-by-the-Sea with friends Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper, as well as Kelce’s mom, Donna.
Another source previously said that during this break from work, the pair were “focused on rest and recuperation and relaxing at home and having low-key and chill time together.”
“They are enjoying movie nights in her home theater, catching up on films and shows they’ve missed,” they continued, explaining that the couple is working on “scheduling” the upcoming long distance and their various projects so that they can “see each other as much as possible” because they “don’t want to spend too much time apart.”
Kelce is spending the NFL offseason in Los Angeles after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win in February, taking time to see Swift in both Singapore and Australia when she was performing. He is currently filming a new game show called Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity.
