Here is where the past will amaze you, the present will entertain you, and the constantly changing future will catch your attention.

Why You Really Need to Visit St. Petersburg, Florida

Florida's historic St. Petersburg invites you to its vibrant downtown and gorgeous beaches.

why should i visit st petersburg

All About the Arts

Sunken gardens and surreal experiences, international flavors, beautiful beaches, the best of both worlds, hotels in st. petersburg.

Once a sleepy coastal city where retirees congregated on green benches lining the streets, Tampa's neighboring town now draws entrepreneurs, painters, and travelers—from beach lovers to art aficionados. (Retirees have a lot more fun too.) "My parents told me, 'You're too young to move to St. Pete,'" said Emily Elwyn, who relocated anyway, along with scads of other Gen-Xers and millennials who've helped invigorate this town. "So much of what people want is what we already have: a walkable downtown, front-porch neighborhoods, funky old buildings, and access to the arts, parks, and recreation." Not to mention the fact that beaches are minutes away.

A 12-year resident, Elwyn now serves as president of the board of directors at Preserve the "Burg, a nonprofit that leads city tours for locals and tourists every Saturday. From the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, with its inviting bungalows, to the business center along the marina, where new additions and million-dollar condos are popping up, St. Petersburg feels both historic and emergent.

Locals say the recent boom has centered along Beach Drive (facing the bay) and Central Avenue (lined with galleries, bars, and boutiques).

"The town has only been this exciting for about 15 years," said Jeri Gammage, who volunteers at Florida CraftArt, a gallery and store, that's also a statewide nonprofit. Gammage attributes the city's evolution to the arts community. "Some might argue it's the baseball team," she said, nodding toward the Tampa Bay Rays' Tropicana Field on the downtown fringe. "But most people in the baseball shirts go straight to the stadium."

For Gammage, it was the Morean Arts Center , where locals can take classes and tourists can watch glassblowing demos, that sparked many changes downtown. She said that once the Morean joined Florida CraftArt on Central Avenue a few years back, the businesses, restaurants, and warehouses-turned-studios followed.

Adding to the cachet of Central Avenue, the Morean's Chihuly Collection (a trove of fantastical blown-glass creations by Dale Chihuly) moved inside a new gallery designed to help the viewer appreciate every curl and spire. The artist reportedly chose St. Petersburg because of its commitment to art and arts education. Gallery owner and multimedia artist Chad Mize even designed a popular T-shirt that proudly proclaims, in bold lettering, this city's place among the world's biggest cultural hubs: "Paris, London, Tokyo, St. Pete."

"Originally, it was tongue-in-cheek, but we actually are kind of in that league," said Mize, who has sold more than 60,000 items with his World Tour design. "We are definitely an arts city in terms of culture and desirability."

Shoppers along Central Avenue can browse through the curated housewares at ZaZoo'd, snag affordable handmade jewelry at SaltLight Art, and find on-trend fashions under $60 at Misred. Stroll past the murals that decorate refurbished buildings, some of which Mize painted after he moved to St. Pete, attracted by its heritage and potential for growth. "I loved the kitsch of it, the neon signs, the roadside-attraction aspect, and also the water," he said. "Now there's just so much—new restaurants and more stuff to do."

Like Central Avenue, Beach Drive has done its part to spur the city's renaissance. The Museum of Fine Arts , which anchors this thoroughfare with neoclassical grandeur, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. Its handsome interiors are reminiscent of a grand, old estate, one where there just happens to be a Monet hanging on the wall. (It's one of his Houses of Parliament paintings, just in case you're wondering.)

Only a few blocks away, a botanical wonderland that's called the Sunken Gardens hides right in the middle of downtown. This landscape—more than a century old—will lure you into a maze of paths through towering palms and past fountains of pink bougainvillea and manicured gardens. People come from all over the country to admire the fluttering tops of bamboo stalks that grow as tall as palm trees.

Visitors can get so entranced with the plants that they might not have time to stop by one of St. Petersburg's most amazing jewels: the stunning home for works by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí.

The Dalí Museum overlooks the marina and faces the renovated Duke Energy Center for the Arts-The Mahaffey Theater, which hosts world-class concerts, ballets, and more. Worth a trip for the architecture alone, The Dalí invites visitors to climb an elegant spiral stairway to see masterworks housed on the third floor and to enjoy water and sky views through an undulating window on the way up.

Take in the Dreams of Dalí virtual reality experience, where you will join other headset-wearing visitors "walking" amid stark and startling landscapes. In the Avant-garden, you can pose with a mustache sculpture or sit on an oozing green bench that looks like it came straight out of a Dalí painting.

"The Dalí has made us a destination for people from around the world," Gammage said. Have dinner at Tryst Gastro Lounge on Beach Drive, and you might hear Spanish, French, or Italian accents coming from nearby tables.

Enjoy the ambiance as well as Tryst's frequently changing menu that promises fresh surprises every time you visit. Order a cocktail, and join couples lounging beneath umbrellas at sidewalk tables. (Try the Tryst: Deep Eddy vodka, muddled strawberry, raspberry, lemon, and elderflower liquor.) Relax under the indoor twinkling light strands. They complement the illuminated facade of the Museum of Fine Arts, located just across the street, where banners highlight the current exhibit.

It's a happening spot. Clusters of diners bustle by to meet friends at Tryst and other eateries, such as Red Mesa Cantina just a few blocks away; locals take their dogs out for nightly walks, and places like Ocean Blue Galleries stay open late into the evening. St. Petersburg seems less like a typical resort town and more like a bayside neighborhood where visitors can take up residence and feel at home, if only for the weekend.

Despite the city's charms, the sand and surf of St. Pete Beach will eventually lure you away. The flamingo-hued Don CeSar hotel, known as the Pink Palace, has been welcoming guests to this barrier island since the 1920s.

On a perfect day—temps in the low 80s, no humidity, fluttering palms— it can be tough to find a parking spot on Gulf Way, which runs along the beachfront in the historic Pass-a-Grille neighborhood. The powder-soft white sand and turquoise-streaked water are worth enduring a momentary traffic jam. Across from Eighth and Ninth Avenues, a happy, banana yellow hole-in-the-wall called Paradise Grille serves sunbathers from breakfast until dinnertime. It's flanked on Saturdays by the Suntan Art Mart, where you can find beach-themed creations and estate jewelry.

Take a seat at the rooftop bar at Hurricane Seafood Restaurant for a seagull's view of the beach scene. The nearby Brass Monkey also offers an impressive Gulf vista, along with a tangy Grouper Reuben.

On the pastel-colored row of beachy Eighth Avenue shops, check out Bamboozle and Etc., which are both brimming with stylish coastal wares. This short street dead-ends into Merry Pier, with an old bait shop where you can book fishing charters. Hop on the shuttle to Shell Key, an undeveloped barrier island. After a 10-minute boat ride, the captain will drop you off where you're free to snorkel, sunbathe, dolphin-watch, and collect shells until the shuttle picks you up a few hours later. End the day with dinner on historic Corey Avenue at Chill Restaurant & Bar. (Order the espresso-rubbed beef tenderloin.)

Don't leave St. Pete without swinging back downtown for a drink along Central Avenue, which pulses with live music at a string of bars where tables spill onto the sidewalk. Check out The Mandarin Hide, a sophisticated speakeasy-style place, or head to Mastry's Bar, a local landmark. They're both great spots to toast St. Petersburg while planning your return.

St. Pete has no shortage of cool hotels, including some classic coastal spots.

The Don CeSar, St. Pete Beach

The Pink Palace is the centerpiece of St. Pete Beach. Opened in 1928, The Don Cesar celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018 but still feels updated, with a new lobby and room renovations completed over the past decade.

Hollander Hotel, Downtown

With its restaurant (The Tap Room), a spa, and the stunning courtyard pool and terrace, this affordable gem is within walking distance of Beach Drive.

Avalon, Downtown

The Hollander Hotel's sister property offers access to the Hollander's pool as well as complimentary Champagne and wine every evening.

The Vinoy Renaissance St Petersburg Resort & Golf Club, Downtown

Pink with palm-green trim, this recently renovated historic property on the marina exudes vintage glamour. Miami-inspired colors meet Art Deco style in the refreshed guest rooms and a new restaurant called Paul's Landing.

Why travel to St. Petersburg

People: From its beginnings, St. Petersburg was a city of thinkers. It was founded so as to bring fresh ideas from Europe to replace Russia’s superstitious culture. To this day, the city’s inhabitants are famed for their distinctly bohemian approach to life and the importance they place upon culture.

Places: The naval city that Peter dreamed up was created as much to allow visitors to marvel at his Empire as it was to let Russians explore the world. To this day, the avenues lined with mansions, side-to-side, stretching for miles never fails to impress visitors with their sheer scale and grandeur.

Past: Being the seat of Russian ruling class for two hundred years, it’s difficult not to come across some memento of its impressive history in even the most unassuming courtyards— and the locals will happily point them out to you should you struggle!

Why visit St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg has always been a city of dreams. From the moment Peter the Great gazed across the mossy bog-land that he had just conquered from the Swedes, he saw a dream come true. And though initially others couldn’t appreciate its potential, by the time he had persuaded his subjects to establish their residences there, it was as clear as the glistening cross on the Peter and Paul Fortress that St. Petersburg would be the city that would change both Russia and its people for the better.

Reasons to Vacation in St. Petersburg in 2022

Sophistication at its height.

From its inception to our times, St. Petersburg has effortlessly taken center stage as the crowning jewel of Europe’s intellectual and cultural circles. The importance placed upon enlightenment and all its higher pursuits imbues every aspect of the city, down to its pavements. On each corner, the brooding bust of some great genius or a plaque commemorating the birthplace of a celebrated artist pay homage to the city’s august history. Boasting the world’s second largest art-museum, The Hermitage, and over 100 theatres, including the renowned Mariinsky; St. Petersburg possess that depth and food for the soul that so many of today’s vacuous mega-cities lack. Travel to St. Petersburg, Russia for a vacation with more substance and style.

Tsarist Treasures on every street

When Peter the Great began the monumental task of transforming the swamps into an inhabitable city, he was adamant that only the best maestros of the architectural world would design his city. It was a world first; a city designed to a perfect plan with wide boulevards and harmonized color-schemes. No hint of squalor or disorderliness was permitted. It would be a city truly fit for a Tsar. Today, the great vision of Peter’s city still shines strong. Though there have been cracks along the way, with Bolshevik looting and WW2 blockades, the majority of St. Petersburg remains as it was, intact in all its grandeur and idealism. Come see the world through the eyes of a Tsar when you visit St Petersburg, Russia with us.

Other-Worldly White nights

Summer in St. Petersburg is like a dream that never ends. All the people stroll down the streets from morning till midnight, soaking up the mystical light of the sun at night. Bobbing down the shimmering waters of the Neva on boats to see the bridges rise up towards the luminescent skies and then into the cafes that spill onto the sidewalks, for philosophical musings accompanied by jazz. Its midsummer magic of the kind that Shakespeare wrote, but unlike the play it isn’t all over in just one night—it stretches over two, magnificent months, leaving all in its wake starry-eyed and hopelessly in love with the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg, Russia travel experiences speak to the heart.

The Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg

The Salvador Dali Museum is a must-see when visiting St Petersburg. Not only does it boast an impressive permanent collection of Salvador Dali’s works, but it also offers visitors the chance to experience the surreal world of the artist. It features masterpieces from every stage of Dali’s career, allowing guests to gain a comprehensive understanding of his unique talent.

The Salvador Dali Museum itself is a work of art. Drive around back along the waterfront, and you’ll see what I mean. There is a beautiful garden and sitting area you can enjoy. Don’t miss the gift shop, where you can find unique gifts to take home. The Mahaffey Theater is located next door if you decide to stay for a show.

Plus, you are traveling with young children, one of the hidden gems in St Petersburg is Albe rt W hitted Park , directly behind the Dali Museum. It has beautiful views of the waterfront and it overlooks the airport. Kids can climb on the playground equipment designed to look like airplanes, while you enjoy watching the sailboats. There are also shaded gazebos for a picnic.

🤑 Pro Tip: There is metered parking along the water and sometimes easier to find rather than Central Avenue or Beach Drive.

James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art

The James Museum in St Petersburg

The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art is perhaps one of the most beautiful western art museums I’ve ever been to. From the time you enter the museum, you’ll be awed by the flawless layout with massive bronze sculptures of Native Americans and depictions of the old west.

Visitors can take part in many educational programs or even arrange guided excursions. I was surprised at how kid-friendly this museum was, offering classes and other things to do.

I also found some unique items in their gift shop, such as beautiful jewelry and kid’s trains, etc. It’s definitely well worth a visit to see this permanent collection of the old west.

Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement

Museum of the Arts & Crafts Movement exterior

One of the newer museums in St Petersburg is the Museum of the Arts & Crafts Moment. This massive 40,000 square feet of gallery space has a retail store, an upscale café and restaurant, a children’s gallery, a theater, a graphic studio, and more!

Here you will see fine arts examples by Gustav Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Grueby, Newcomb Pottery, Charles Rohlfs, Margaret Patterson, Louis Sullivan, plus many other gifted women and craftsmen.

Beyond the artists, you will see a variety of original pieces from handmade furniture, pottery, tiles, lighting, photography, fine arts, textiles, metalwork, room installations, and other artwork.

Dale Chihuly’s artwork has been seen throughout Paris and London, along with Seattle’s spectacular Chihuly Garden. Here you can see his sculptures, plus glass-blowing demonstrations.

One of his most famous pieces is the ruby red icicle chandelier at the Morean Arts Center. The Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier is a spectacular studio glass piece that truly stands out with its pointy red droplets.

The Florida Holocaust Museum

The Florida Holocaust Museum with photos, of many of the families affected

Located in downtown St Pete, The Florida Holocaust Museum has been providing education for over 30+ years on the travesty that occurred during World War II.

Here you will find one of the best museums on the Holocaust, with many authentic artifacts such as clothing, photography, eating utensils, handwritten notes, etc. This permanent collection really leaves you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for our freedom today.

The Florida Holocaust Museum also has a small, but reasonably priced gift shop with donations that support the museum.

The Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts

For art lovers, you’ll want to make a stop at the Museum of Fine Arts in the heart downtown on Beach Drive.

The museum features an extensive permanent collection of decorative arts along with folk arts artwork from African Art, American photography, and European paintings.

Imagine Museum

While I could keep going with the amazing art museums, The Imagine Museum is my last one for this article. If you are into contemporary glass art you’ll have to visit the Imagine Museum.

Just a few years ago, the Imagine Museum was not yet opened, but within a short time has gained popularity. It is the first museum in the US to focus solely on contemporary glass art and shares vital details about the movement and studio glass artists.

You’ll be blown away by what magnificent glass masterpieces. Plus, if you’re needing a little motivation, there are inspirational quotes throughout the 2-story building. The Imagine Museum has a little scavenger hunt that makes it a lot of fun for the whole family.

Take the Cross Bay Ferry to Tampa

Cross Bay Ferry

Taking the downtown ferry to Tampa is a fun way to explore Tampa especially if you’re staying at downtown St Pete hotel. You can easily walk from Straub Park and jump aboard. Avoid the traffic and enjoy some time on the water!

Tampa has so much to offer! From fun things to do for couples or families , you won’t run out of interesting sights. If you only have a day to explore, I highly recommend the ferry. Otherwise, Tampa really deserves more time and stay the night in downtown Tampa hotel .

Explore Historic Landmarks in St Pete

Bike rentals or scooter rentals are available. Photo at Straub Park of bikes to rent.

St. Petersburg is home to several historic landmarks and buildings that are worth exploring. Downtown St Pete is super easy to navigate whether you go for a bike ride or stroll. From the breathtaking Vinoy Renaissance Resort & Golf Club located right by the waterfront (which was built in 1925). In recent years, they have been doing a lot of construction to bring it back to its glory.

Whether you book a hotel night stay here or visit for a drink, it’s one of the most iconic hotels similar to the glorious pink palace in St Pete Beach, The Don CeSar .

St Petersburg offers self-guided audio tours if you have interest in seeing the Historic Outdoor Museum of Roser Park, African American Heritage Trails, and Downtown Waterfront Walking Tours.

Eat at the Best Restaurants in Downtown St Petersburg

Try out some of the numerous cafés, restaurants, and bistros while in St. Petersburg. You will surely get hungry in downtown St Petersburg whether your favorite meal is an American sandwich or a Swiss dessert.

Parkshore Grill

Outdoor seating area at Parkshore Grill St Petersburg

The Parkshore Grill is one of my long-time favorite restaurants for consistent quality meals with a gorgeous setting. I recommend booking in advance on OpenTable.

It’s also no surprise that this restaurant is always busy, given the wonderful scenery just outside the restaurant. You can choose to eat al fresco while overlooking the city’s waterfront.

It also has a great weekend brunch menu in addition to lunch and dinner.

Steaks, fresh fish, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and paninis are just some of the options. Some of my favorites: the scallops, salmon, parkshore salad, and the decadent mac and cheese.

The Ceviche St Petersburg has a luxurious and grand feel to it, and it’s a great place to relax and spend time with friends and family. Brussels, fresh salmon, oxtail, and churros are just a few delicious things you can order from its menu. Don’t pass on their red sangria (I prefer it the standard way).

For a fun date night, order a variety of tapas for your table to share. If you like the outdoors or people-watching, ask for a table outside. This is a prime location on Beach Drive just to enjoy the scenery.

On less than desirable weather conditions, they have a gorgeous interior with bright colors and beautiful tiles that make you want to stay longer.

Urban Stillhouse

The Urban Stillhouse is a great place to eat an expensive steak and drink whiskey (sounds like Yellowstone!).  This 2-story restaurant has a dark interior with a high-end industrial vibe.

The Urban Stillhouse offers novel and traditional American foods that are grilled to order. It’s best to book a table in advance on OpenTable.

The Library Restaurant

The Library Restaurant is one of my favorite brunch locations. While it’s not near the heart of downtown, it’s just a short drive away.

The Library provides an escape from daily stresses with a unique atmosphere and delicious entrees.

Casita Taqueria

Casita is orange building on Central Avenue with bikes out front.

Casita Taqueria on Central Avenue is a go-to casual spot for locals who like a wide range of tasty tacos! If you’re craving Shrimp, Carnitas, or Slow Roasted Pork, you’ll be delighted by their savory options.

All of their corn tortillas are prepared in-house, and they only use the freshest available local produce. They also have delicious chips and queso, and a cute patio outback for guests to utilize.

Pub Trolley Tour

You need the trolley pub tour when you want to go from bar to bar in a city. Why not get a tour and drinks while on vacation? It’s truly a win-win.

With this tour, you can go to different breweries and drink their incredible, one-of-a-kind drinks without a care in the world. Along the way, you can also meet new people who like the same things you do and take pictures going to and from each checkpoint.

Grand Central District

Salty Nun is a good place for brunch

As a local, I’ve seen the Grand Central District really take off in the last 10 years. It’s gone from bland to fabulous as more local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and artsy boutiques continue to flock here.

Take time for a stroll, and enjoy the scene! Anyone that travels with dogs, must make time at one of my favorites, The Dog Bar . Plus, you have the Hatchet Hangout Axe Throwing , antique shops , and more. Three Daughters Brewing is located in this district.

Visit Local St Pete Breweries & Distilleries

Green Bench brewing, best breweries in St Petersburg FL

If you enjoy drinking, St. Petersburg won’t let you down. Here are a few in the downtown area that are excellent choices.

3 Daughters Brewing

A couple of my personal favorite breweries are the 3 Daughters Brewing and Green Bench Brewing. Both have a lot to offer and are good for the entire family.

At the 3 Daughters Brewing, you could stay most of the day since they have other things to do, such as live music events, food, games, and local vendors selling their handmade items.

Green Bench Brewing Company

Green Bench Brewing Company specializes in a family-friendly beer garden serving IPAs, ales, and ciders. From dogs to children, everyone is welcome! It has a spacious interior and friendly staff. If you like good beer, this is one of the best breweries in St Petersburg.

Kozuba and Sons Distillery

As far as distilleries, Kozuba and Sons Distillery is a fun place to stop and sample (try the lemon vodka). The distillery has a great atmosphere, like a speakeasy during the prohibition era.

St Pete Distillery

St Pete Distillery has a delicious coconut rum, and the orange liqueur is particularly good. While it’s at the end of town, it’s a good take-home gift idea to remember your time in the area.

Stopping at these places for a while will give you and your friends new things to do. Visiting these places will not only allow you to have unique and fine wine but also find out how they brew their alcohol. Who knows, you might even start your brewery one day.

Beautiful Outdoor Parks & Gardens in Downtown St Pete

Beautiful parks and gardens in the center of St. Pete St. Petersburg, Florida, are surrounded by trees and plants that are very healthy and full of life. This means that people can enjoy the peace and greenery that the area.

You can unwind as you spend hours touring the many parks in the city. So, here are my top favorite parks in downtown St Petersburg.

Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens one of the older attractions and things to do in St. Petersburg FL

The Sunken Gardens are home to the region’s oldest tropical plants, some of which are over a century old. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful display gardens, horticultural programs, flowing waterfalls, flamingos, and a live collection of more than 6,000 plant species.

The gardens are attached to the Great Explorations Children’s Museum , which makes it an ideal stop for families. You can easily see both on the same day. While I like Sunken Gardens, I seem to spend more time in the local parks.

Since it is one of Florida’s last remaining roadside attractions, Sunken Gardens visitors should be prepared to stay on the paved trails and avoid touching the plants. There is also an admission fee to tour Sunken Gardens.

Glazer Family Playground at St Pete Pier

St Pete Pier Playground

At St Pete Pier, you’ll find a large playground for the kids (toddlers to older children), concessions, and a splash pad. They also have Spa Beach, which is a nice place to cool off on a hot day. This is a popular spot, and best to come early if you want to avoid crowds.

Vinoy Park has gorgeous views of the waterfront in st pete. Showing boats and tall buildings.

Looking for that perfect photo to take of downtown St Petersburg? Make a quick stop in Vinoy Park.

Vinoy Park, a two-mile stretch of shoreline in the heart of St. Petersburg, provides picturesque views of the city, the breathtaking waterfront, and the nearby historic Vinoy Renaissance Resort . The park is a nice spot to unwind in the shade while reading a book or to spend time with friends and family in the open green areas. Many of the top events held in the city each year take place there as well, like Florida’s Largest Pride Parade .

It’s one of the hidden gems in St Petersburg since it’s not something most still know about.

North Shore Park & Aquatic Complex

North Shore Aquatic Complex with lots of swimmers in the pool.

North Shore Park is a 30-acre waterfront park with a North Shore Aquatic Complex , a kid’s playground, a dog park, beach volleyball courts, softball fields, and more!

It is located next to Vinoy Park and offers an array of activities, low-cost or free things to do. While in North Shore Park, visit the free gardens and enjoy a walk along the waterfront.

Dell Holmes Park

Dell Holmes Park

Dell Holmes Park is one of my new favorite parks in St. Petersburg, Florida. If I’m honest – finding a park that checks all my family’s boxes is challenging, especially if you want to avoid crowds like at the St Pete Pier. In fact, I would drive all the way up to Tarpon Springs Waterpark to find something similiar.

Dell Holmes Park is just south of downtown St. Petersburg and is free to use. The park is situated on Lake Maggiore which is ideal for boating, fishing, and walking trails. My husband especially appreciates the driving range and putting green. At the same time, my son loves the massive playground area and waterpark. You’ll find plenty of picnic areas and covered space so you can enjoy the park year round.

Crescent Lake Park

Crescent Lake Park

Crescent Lake Park stands out from the rest of St. Petersburg’s parks because of its stunning scenery. People are calmed by the trees, plants, and water as they walk around the perimeter of the pond.

Crescent Lake Park is surrounded by lovely banyan trees and is a popular spot for a range of activities. Bring a blanket or sit on the grass and participate in Healthy St. Pete’s Free Yoga in the Park program.

Additionally, The Huggins-Stengel Sports Complex, TASCO’s Center for Teen Technology, a playground, a dog park, and recreation paths are all located in this park.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Pro Tip:   If you have young children, Crescent Lake has a nice shaded playground that’s close to downtown and less busy than the St Pete Pier (with free parking).

Check Out the Adorable Boutiques & Bookstores

Sundial Shopping

Unique souvenirs are simple to find in downtown St. Petersburg, thanks to the abundance of boutiques and unique bookstores downtown.

Check out Jackie Z Style Co. in the Sundial Mall for unique high-end clothing. Afterwards, you can grab dinner or a movie, since AMC Movie Theater entrance is steps away.

Tombolo Books, off 1st Avenue S, is a cute shop full of delightful reads. Or if you like a book with your wine (or a coffee), you must stop in at Book + Bottle .

Best Coffee Shops in Downtown St Pete

A cup of steaming coffee is ideal for waking up and preparing for the day ahead. There are numerous cafés in downtown St Petersburg where you may purchase their best coffee. The best coffee businesses have inviting décor and delectable beverages, like Bandit Coffee Co. and Black Crow Coffee Shop. My personal favoirte is Bandit Coffee Company, and it’s next to Wild Child (another one of my secret hidden gems for Sunday brunch)!

Tampa Bay Rays Game

The Tampa Bay Rays, a major league baseball team from St. Petersburg, are worth checking out if you enjoy a ball game. Check out the schedule for the Tropicana Field prior to your visit.

During the off-season or away games, they have other events at Tropicana Field, such as Enchant ( Christmas Lights ), Boat Shows, and more! For years, Tampa Bay Rays talked about moving their stadium to Tampa or even out of state! Locals like myself are glad to see they are staying put while they build a brand new stadium on the property!

Spend Time at Unique & Local Markets in St Petersburg

Florida’s St. Petersburg is home to numerous unique and local markets. Flea markets, farmer’s markets, and Saturday morning markets are important locations where you can easily buy household goods, food, and souvenirs.

Mazzaro’s Italian Market

IMG 1694

Customers and tourists can purchase a variety of delectable items at Mazzaro’s Italian Market. For those that love fresh coffee beans, cheese, homemade pasta, meat, and wine, you’ll have to make a stopover on 22nd Avenue North.

My personal favorite is getting their fresh homemade to-go lasagne and caesar salad. The portion is large enough for sharing, and it’s delicious! Plus, don’t miss the dessert area – I have had so many amazing things here.

Saturday Morning Market: Downtown St Pete Farmer’s Market

Downtown St Pete Farmer's Market showing green beans and fresh produce.

Travel is sometimes exhausting and enjoyable. A great chance to breathe in the air while preserving the local culture is to visit the Saturday morning market.

With more than 100 vendors that sell everything from fresh food to artisan desserts made at local farms. They also sell outstanding handmade crafts, goods, and other products.

The Saturday morning market is the best place to go when planning a picnic – pick up a few things and then stroll over to Vinoy Park or the St Pete Pier.

Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach

Corey Avenue Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach

St. Petersburg has a boatload of fantastic markets, but another one of my top things to do in St. Petersburg is visit the Corey Avenue Sunday Market. The whole street is shut down as live music, fresh produce, locally made crafts, and 75+ unique vendors come together every Sunday. We usually like to walk around and then pop over to Upham Beach and grab a pasterie and coffee at CocoAddiction .

Enjoy the Performing Arts & Live Music in St Petersburg

Elle King on stage in St Pete at Jannus Live. Jannus has a beautiful outdoor patio, and it's one of my favorite things to do in St. Petersburg at night.

You’ll be amazed as to why music is such a significant component of the events planned in St. Petersburg, Florida. Well, it’s because the locals love music, and they enjoy listening to rock, jazz, and other genres of music, resulting in numerous live music performances.

Mahaffey Theater

The Mahaffey Theater (Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts) is a sophisticated performing arts and concert hall located in the same complex as The Dali. It has over 2,000 seats with beautiful views of Tampa Bay.

The Mahaffey Theater is where you will see headliners or see a ballet or other large-scale event. I’ve seen a variety of performances over the years, from Lorretta Lynn to performing arts shows. The Mahaffey Theater often has shows for the whole family – such as the popular, Big Red Dog Musical.

See a Show at Jannus Live

Located in downtown St Pete, Jannus Live is one of the premier outdoor music venues in St. Petersburg. With a variety of genres spanning rock, pop, hip-hop, and jazz, there’s an eclectic offering of musical talents. Get ready for an unforgettable night of live music!

Floridian Social Club

Because of its well-known, distinctive exteriors and interiors, this area stands out from other places. It hosts public concerts, private events, and open-to-the-public social gatherings. Additionally, there is an open lounge where food and drinks will be served to attendees of a certain event. Check out their upcoming events page to hopefully catch their performing arts while you’re in town.

Unique Bars in Downtown St Pete

Stillwaters Tavern is a nice option for a beer with lighter fare. Showing outdoor seating and beautiful views of highrises.

There are numerous bars in St. Petersburg’s downtown where visitors may have a good time. Going to the local taverns is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the community and how hospitable the people are. Additionally, you have a variety of options to select from, allowing you to try something new.

Canopy Rooftop Lounge

Located far above the streets, The Canopy is a rooftop bar where you can have a drink and take in the amazing view. The stylish lounge is situated on the roof of the Birchwood Hotel and offers private cabanas, cozy fire pits, and comfortable lounge seats with unobstructed views of the downtown St Petersburg waterfront.

The Full-Service Bar offers patrons a choice of handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and an assortment of spirits, while birchwood’s upper-level cuisine serves a seasonal menu for casual dishes, including sandwiches, flatbreads, and appetizers all prepared in-house.

This is my favorite rooftop bar in downtown St Petersburg. Come at happy hour, which runs from 4-7 pm, and take in the sunset. Enjoy the drink specials(such as red or white sangria for 5 bucks). They have a very nice charcuterie board with a great mix of meats, cheese, fruits, and nuts. Late night hours, this becomes more like a nightclub with a DJ or live music.

If you are looking for a unique atmosphere and fun cocktails, check out The Saint. This speakeasy requires a password to get in (it’s on their website and Instagram), so you’re bound to have a great time. It is located in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central neighborhood. Keep in mind, the drinks are expensive.

Bacchus Wine Bistro

Bacchus Wine Bistro

If you like charcuterie and small plates with wine, check out Bacchus Wine Bistro . While it’s not as unique as some of the other bars, its quaint atmosphere is nice for conversational seating with friends or couples.

For those that enjoy wine, they have an extensive list. I prefer their outdoor seating when it’s available for a carefree hour or two!

See the Historic Neighborhoods of St Petersburg

The Vinoy Golf Club on Snell Isle

I’ve often seen Historic Kenwood listed as the most charming neighborhood because of its bungalows designed in the 1920s.

While I enjoy seeing Historic Kenwood, my preferred historic sites include the Historic Old Northeast, Coffee Pot Boulevard NE and Snell Isle.

If you want to see some of the finest houses where local politicians such as Charlie Christ live. Then you’ll want to drive along N. Shore Drive NE to Coffee Pot Boulevard to Snell Isle. This short drive from downtown won’t take you more than an hour roundtrip, so you could possibly fit in Historic Kenwood too!

Watch the Tampa Bay Rowdies Play

If you enjoy soccer, you should watch the St Petersburg squad, the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

This professional soccer team goes under the radar for most people on vacation, but it’s definitely a lot of fun to watch. Check out their schedule for a full list of upcoming games.

Check Out the Beautiful Murals

St Pete Mural with hand reaching out

St. Petersburg, Florida, is also known for the murals you can see all over the city, especially on walls in public places. There is also the Grand Central Arts District, which is filled with murals.

In St. Petersburg, there probably is a daring and magnificent piece of art covering any outdoor surface. The murals that decorate the city’s walls are renowned (in fact, there are more than 150). There is even an annual mural festival called SHINE that takes place in St Petersburg in October and invites artists from all over the world.

Fort De Soto Park

Fort De Soto Park showing an old cannon

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in St Petersburg FL, for nature lovers, you have found it.

Fort De Soto Park was built on Mullet Key under the direction of Robert E. Lee. It is now largely known for having some of the best award-winning beaches, boating, fishing, and wildlife, with over 1,100 acres to explore. Make sure to spend some at the picturesque white sand beaches (I especially like North Beach).

There are miles of paved nature trails, camping and picnic spots, two fishing piers, bird watching, ferry rides to Egmont and Shell Keys, and a dog area. Of course, you can’t leave without seeing the historic fort and museum.

Camping at Fort De Soto Park is truly the best way to experience all that this park has to offer. There are a total of 236 campsites with facilities that also include access to electricity, washers and dryers, restrooms, playgrounds, and campsite stores.

You can also bring your dog. Fort De Soto Park has one of the best dog beaches in Florida.

Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge

Egmont Key State Park

Egmont Key State Park is a secluded private island only accessible by boat. Since there’s no admission fee (only transportation cost).

Island Ferry of St Pete Beach is one ferry option, or you can visit through For De Soto Park. Keep in mind, you’ll need to bring your own beach or snorkel equipment.

One of the best ways to see Egmont Key State Park is on a boat tour. They provide the equipment and you can relax and enjoy the island! This 4-Hour Egmont Key Boat Tour provides snorkel equipment, bottled waters, and an indoor cabin with air-conditioning when it gets hot. Plus, they take you by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for gorgeous photo opportunities.

You can spend time at the white sand beach, go snorkeling or swimming in crystal clear waters, or enjoy the nature trails. The blue-green water is shallow and clear at Egmont Key, so it’s easy to see the beautiful shells and fish swimming around you.

Keep your eyes open for old structures that have since been submerged in the Gulf of Mexico. You can also see (and we often do) manatees, dolphins, and other marine life while snorkeling around this island.

Take a break from snorkeling and see some of Egmont Key by walking the nature trail. The brick paths will lead you to several structures and a lighthouse that are historic ruins of Fort Dade that date back to 1858.

Before you visit, make sure you have good weather. Egmont Key State Park is a distance by boat and you don’t want to be out there in a storm.

Enjoy a Round of Golf in Pinellas County

Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club in St Petersburg

With gulf coast breezes and sunny weather, a day on the golf course is another one of the fun things to do in St Petersburg FL. Check out our article on the best golf courses in Pinellas County .

If you prefer a miniature golf course, Smugglers Cove has a couple of locations in Tampa Bay. Some even have live alligators and pirate ships!

With 3,1900 acres of nature trails and green spaces, you have plenty of bird watching opportunities. Plus, you can enjoy a paddling trail with canoe or kayak rentals available to rent.

Weedon Island Preserve offers guided tours which are great for the whole family. One of the most interesting nature hikes is an active archaeological dig site on Weeden Island Preserve. Here you can learn about the early inhabitants of Weedon Island thousands of years ago.

Observation towers are another great way to see wildlife. At Wheedon Island Preserve, their observation tower provides visitors with an excellent view of Tampa Bay and the cities of St Petersburg and Tampa .

Make Time for Day Trips in St Petersburg Area

Sunset photo was taken on the water of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Tampa Bay really has a boatload of places to see! You’ll definitely want to make time for some day trips. I have an extensive list of favorite places, but here are a few to mention:

Bradenton Florida Marina showing boats

Head over the beautiful Sunshine Skyway Bridge to the city of Bradenton, Florida. Before you get there, some people like to stop at the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park for beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. The fishing piers are the location of the old bridge which has great fishing, such as Spanish mackerel, tarpon, and sea trout.

In Bradenton, you’ll find a nice laid-back waterfront town with a beautiful riverwalk. One of my favorite science museums, The Bishop Museum of Science & Nature , is located downtown with manatees in their aquarium. Check out my full list of fun things to do in Bradenton .

Clearwater & Clearwater Beach

Clearwater church of scientology

Beyond the Church of Scientology, Clearwater is famous for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of suffering marine animals. They provide public education, including dolphin boat tours and conservation efforts in a hands-on experience.

The aquarium gained worldwide recognition for being where the Bottlenose Dolphin, “Winter” lived. Winter was the main character in the 2009 book Winter’s Tale and, more notably, became the 2011 film, Dolphin Tale .

Downtown Clearwater Beach is also worth visiting, and one of my favorite staycations! Read more about deciding between St Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach for vacation here !

Madeira Beach

Madeira Beach

It is widely known for its 2.5 mile long white sandy beaches and the historical John’s Pass Village. This beautiful shopping district has over 100 unique shops and many restaurants, bars, and watersports equipment available to rent.

John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk has been ranked the #1 attraction in Pinellas County.

Tarpon Springs is a city located on the Gulf of Mexico. Known for its Greek eateries that line the waterfront of Dodecanese Boulevard, it has a rich Greek heritage. In the early 1900s, Greek sponge divers settled here and the town was famous for selling sponges.

Enjoy a leisurely walk to see the Historic Sponge Docks are a reminder of the once booming industry. If you get time for a meal, try Hellas Restaurant (they also have a delicious bakery on the property).

Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor downtown

Safety Harbor wasn’t one of the first cities in St. Petersburg to attract my attention. However, it’s been one of my more frequent places to visit in the last year. This quaint town is also located on the water with a super laid-back vibe, with local breweries, antique shops, and golf carts replacing cars for locals. While the city is most known for it’s famous healing springs, there’s plenty to do here on a day trip from St Pete.

So much to do and see. I had no idea there was a holocaust museum there. I would definitely want to visit it.

Oooh nice! I had no idea there was so much art in St Petersburg! The Salvador Dali Museum (and the others) sound really fun to explore.

It may be named after the city in Russia, but this couldn’t look much more different!! So much sunshine!

The Dali Museum is awesome. Next time I need to do a boat tour and also visit some breweries.

Wow, Erin! This is an awesome list of things to do in St. Petersburg. I can’t believe that we have yet to visit. I would love to check out some of the restaurants you mentioned. I mean, you had me at tacos!!

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / 15 reasons to visit St. Petersburg – Russia’s cultural capital

If the great cities of Europe competed for the title of ‘Most Beautiful’, St Petersburg would be right up there. The mix of history, culture and, contemporary life — those elements that make visit St Petersburg so compelling. In the midst of a new era of cultural expression, majestic historical buildings and classical artistic traditions are still preserved and valued by the locals.

This list of attractions and reasons on why you should visit St Petersburg will tap you right into the heart of the city’s vibrant energy.

Table of Contents

1. Feel like a Russian tzar in St Petersburg’s palaces and parks

St Petersburg is home to Russia’s best preserved and most elaborate constructions from the extravagant Tsarist era. Brimming with baroque palaces, classical sculptures, royal gardens, and grandiose cathedrals, you can not simply miss to visit St Petersburg in your lifetime. Walking around the city is like wandering through a living museum. Although these architectural buildings were established hundreds of years ago, most were preserved and transformed into museums. Enjoy and feel the history and culture instilled in every room and wall of each infrastructure.

Russia Peterhof

The Winter Palace is one of the most popular palaces in St Petersburg. It was the imperial residence of the Tsars and is the main site of the Hermitage Museum. Rooms were restored in order to depict what its like to live at the time of Russian Empire and is part of what you can see in the State Hermitage Museum . Mikhailovsky Palace or the Russian Museum is boasting about Russian fine arts such as paintings, fabrics, and ancient coins and is also a former musical salon. Yusupov Palace is where most diplomatic meetings are conducted. It has been visited by the biggest celebrities and politicians today. The Museum of Glass Art sits inside the Yelagin Palace . The palace hosts lots of events including music festivals, backyard parties, and tulip festival. Marble Palace has an impressive marble hall and room. More than thirty types of marble were used to build and decorate the palace which is also part of the Russian Museum .

Pushkin , south of St Petersburg, is where one of the most extravagant residence ensembles you could see when you visit St Petersburg. In this town, you can see the neoclassical Alexander Palace . It was Nicholas II –the last Russian emperor’s favorite residence. The palace is now a naval college and a museum which exhibits the palace’s history by restoring three of its rooms and photographs and a documentary film about Nicholas’ regime. On the other hand, a Russian Baroque palace can be found at the centre of the town. Catherine Palace is famous for its Great Hall, Golden Enfilade, and Amber Room. The whole palace is decorated with gold. In fact, more than 100 kilograms of gold were used to illuminate the facade and interiors.

2. The architectural masterpiece of Palace Square

Similar to the Red Square of Moscow, Palace Square ( Dvortsovaya Ploshchad ) is a public space where major historical Russian events took place including the Red October and the Bloody Sunday Massacre. As the city’s main square, political ceremonies and rallies still occur in the vast space every now and then. But festivals and concerts take place more often. It is also considered as one of the most fascinating architectural and historical ensembles in the world which combines baroque and neoclassical architectural styles.

Palace square, Saint Petersburg

On the Northern side of the square, you will find the Baroque-style Winter Palace while opposite to the elegant green and white palace is the equally appealing neoclassical General Staff Building . It served as the home of the Imperial Army General Staff, Tsarist Foreign Ministry, and Ministry of Finance and is currently used as offices by the government in the west wing and as part of the Hermitage Museum in the east wing. What enables to meet the east and west wings is the triumphal arch which also leads you to the famous Nevsky Prospekt .

The Royal Guards’ General Staff Building on the eastern side is also being used as government offices. While on the west of the square is where you can see the Admiralty which serves as naval college and was Russia’s Naval Headquarters. At the centre of the building is the golden Admiralty Tower , the focal point of the city’s main streets: Nevsky Prospect, Gorokhovaia Street, and Voznesensky Prospekt. Another attraction on the square’s west is the Admiralty Garden which is a must visit especially during spring and summer.

On the centre of the Palace Square stands the Alexander Column . It commemorates Russia’s victory over Napoleonic France and is named after Alexander I, the ruler during that era. Standing next to the column, you will surely realize that the square itself is almost enough for you to visit St Petersburg.

3. The magnificent Hermitage Museum

With over three million items, the Hermitage Museum is considered the second largest museum in the world. It is estimated that it will take 11 years for an individual to view each display item for one minute. Filled with artworks of Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, and other artists the Tsars have collected, you just can’t simply miss to see this museum when you visit St. Petersburg. It serves as a symbol of St Petersburg’s (and of Russia’s) love for art, history, and culture. There are several sites that constitute the whole complex, but the main museum is the Winter Palace which is the reason why the Hermitage is called “museum-palace” and not just a museum.

Hermitage

TIP : Tickets are free every first Thursday of the month. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the museum is open until 9 pm while the usual in until 6 pm. It is more expensive if you buy your tickets online than the standard way of personally lining up to purchase tickets at the entrance. However, for a short visit, we recommend that you go to the museum on Wednesday and/or Friday at 4 pm for a shorter queue.

4. Venice of the North

Sharing the name “Venice of the North” with six other cities, St Petersburg has a network of stunning canals and bridges just like Venice. Known for having extravagant palaces, museums, and theatres, it can be tiring to see and discover all of them just by walking around the city. That’s why we recommend you to take some time out for a leisurely canal cruise through the heart of the city. A cruise is necessary when you visit St Petersburg. It gives you the opportunity to sail under photogenic bridges and see most of the city’s famous landmarks along the way.

St Petersburg tour Russia

There are several rivers and canals which you could sail through to see the city from different angles. Neva River is the main waterway of the city and almost all major attractions can be seen from a boat tour along the river. Moyka River is a narrow river that when you decide to cruise around, you’ll find the Court Stables —where Alexander Pushkin’s funeral was held, the Glinka State Academic Capella , and St Isaac’s Square . Zimnyaya Kanavka (Winter Canal) although a short canal is considered the most romantic spot in the city because of its scenic and pleasant view. It connects the Neva and Moyka rivers in the Winter Palace area. The last waterway that we would like to feature is the Kryukov Canal . We believe that a greater recognition must be made for this canal because of its particular history and since the Mariinsky Theatre, New Holland, and the Bell Tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral sit on its banks.

However, if you can’t get enough of cruising through Russian waters when you visit St Petersburg, why not opt for a longer cruise? We offer Russian river cruise , on which you’ll take in the sights, sounds, and history of Russia’s heartland from the comfort of a modern cruise vessel.

5. The spectacle of the Neva bridges opening

Being one of the largest rivers in Europe and one of the world’s shortest river, the Neva River deserves a separate piece. As I wrote above, most of the main attractions in the city can be easily seen from a boat sailing through the river or simply just from any spot on the banks of the river. Navigation season in Saint Petersburg starts in April and ends in November.

St Petersburg tour Russia

During this period drawbridges (moveable bridges that let ships pass through) of St Petersburg are opened for a few hours during the night. Although the raising of the bridge is one of the prominent reasons why tourists want to visit St Petersburg, the actual reason is to let cargo ships to pass up and down the river. A walk along the embankments or a ride on a cruise boat in the Neva river will surely leave an unforgettable impression of the city at night.

TIP : Always check the schedule to avoid being stranded on the wrong side of the river. The bridges usually stay up between 2 am to 5 am.

6. The awe-inspiring churches & cathedrals

Although several Orthodox churches were destroyed during the Russian Revolution, these churches and every church that was left were returned to the Diocese of St. Petersburg for reconstruction. Each church in the city today has equally fascinating history and beauty —inside and out. For those who are devoted to doing a pilgrimage annually, these exquisite churches are the reason why they visit St Petersburg. The architectural design of each church is striking that it makes every structure irresistible to stare at.

St Petersburg tour Russia

If St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the reasons to visit Moscow , The Church of the Savior of the Spilled Blood is one of Russia’s. It has a Medieval Russian architecture —distinct from the common Baroque and Neoclassical styles of most buildings in St. Petersburg, The church also claims to have the largest collection of mosaics in the world that depicts scenes and characters from the Bible. It was where Alexander II was murdered, thus, earning its unique name. Dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, Kazan Cathedral is considered as the most sacred icon of Russia. When you go enter the impressive bronze doors, you can immediately notice that the cathedral features various Russian sculptures, paintings, and icons.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral is the largest cathedral in St. Petersburg and fourth in the world. Its dome was illuminated with gold and twelve statues of angels. The entire cathedral amounted to one million golden rubles. During the Soviet government, the cathedral was denounced as a religious place. Instead, the government established a Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism on the cathedral itself. However, after the fall of the Soviets, religious practice was resumed and the museum was kept open. One of the most bizarre churches, Chesme Church was built as the house church of the Chesme Palace . What makes it unusual is its Gothic-style architecture which is shaped like a cake and is striped in pink and white. Smolny Cathedral, Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, Church of Ss. Simeon and Anna, and Church of the Epiphany of the Mother of God are just some of the incredible churches you definitely should not miss seeing when you visit St Petersburg.

7. Peter and Paul Fortress

It may not be as famous as the Hermitage and the Mariinsky Theatre , but Peter and Paul Fortress are as historically rich and beautiful as the two landmarks. It is the birthplace of the city, founded by Peter the Great and served as the citadel of the city. The fortress is located on Hare’s Island and is labelled as the “Museum of the History of the City”. It is comprised of multiple historical infrastructures that half day is not enough for you to see each one of them. It should be definitely be on your list if you’re planning to visit St Petersburg.

St Petersburg tour Russia

Served as the burial site of the imperial family, Peter and Paul Cathedral symbolizes Imperial Russia. It is the oldest church in St. Petersburg and the gilded spire with an angel holding a cross at the top makes it second-tallest building next to Television Tower in the city. In honour of the apostles Peter and Paul, you will find their status inside the cathedral along with antique paintings and icons. As mentioned above, the compound constitutes numerous buildings and attractions including I mperial Rooms, Bell Tower, Trubetsky Bastion Prison, Commandant’s House, Neva Curtain Wall, Mint, Statue of Peter the Great, Ioannovsky Ravelin, and Engineering House . You can also relax at the beach outside the walls if you’re lucky enough to be there on a nice weather.

TIP: Taking the Metro and getting off at Gorkovskaya station is the easiest way to get to the amazing fortress. Tickets for each museum and exhibition can be purchased at each entry point of the building. But if you already know which buildings you would like to visit, you can buy the tickets in one go at Ioannovsky Ravelin or at the Boat House (near Peter and Paul Cathedral).

8. St Petersburg’s contemporary art scene

State Hermitage Museum, State Russian Museum, Fabergé Museum, Russian Museum of Ethnography, and Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts are just some of the well-known museums in the city. However, St Petersburg isn’t all about the old masters. The city’s reputation as a hub for art and culture has carried on into the modern era. As young artists, writers, musicians, and designers continue to flock to the city, you won’t ever run out of new exhibitions and galleries when you visit St. Petersburg.

A former bakery has now turned into an uber-cool visual and performing arts space called the Loft Project ETAGI or New Holland Island . It serves as a huge multifunctional creative space complete with galleries, bookstores, and hip cafes. Etagi may seem like a little city, as a matter of fact, it is also called “Container City” since containers are used shops and cafes in the exhibition space.

St Petersburg Museum

The Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art sits in a Neoclassical Stalinist building, a former synthetic rubber research institute. But don’t be fooled because it is actually the largest private museum of contemporary art in the whole country. Erarta which means Era of Art produce their own creative projects such as the known U-Space and Theater With No Actors. Their gift shop sells original artworks and home decor items and they even have an interior design service.

Focusing on the 21st-century arts, the Anna Nova Art Gallery has a two-story space where large-scale installations by Russian and international artists are displayed. The gallery also offers a special service for artists who want to promote and develop their own collection and exhibit.

Art re. Flex Gallery exhibits diverse types of applied arts including sculpture, jewellery, and embroidery. Novy Muzei , a 20-minute walk from Erarta Museum, displays controversial modern arts such as naked Stalin and Hitler paintings. If you’re into photography, you should definitely go to ROSPHOTO . Every year, around 50 photographic installations and experimental cinemas are held in the gallery. Perhaps the most diverse art space is Taiga St. Petersburg . It is home to creative startups, recording and design studios, fashion boutique, and showrooms.

9. St Petersburg’s theatres

St Petersburg is not only famous for its fine and visual arts, the city is also boasting with the world-renowned drama, musical, and ballet performances. For some people, the theatres are the sole reason why they visit St Petersburg, so why would you miss this for the world? Each performance is absolutely jaw-dropping. The city’s theatre season begins in mid-September to late June. However, the winter and autumn are the best times to watch the remarkable ballets and operas.

Mariinsky Theatre

The Mariinsky Theatre is the most famous musical theatre in St. Petersburg. Opened in 1860, it is one of the oldest theatres in Russia. The theatre still has one of the most impressive facilities. Outstanding performances of ballet plays such as “The Nutcracker” and “Russian Seasons” have always made their audience in awe. The Mikhailovsky Theatre is the said rival of Mariinsky Theatre. It is the oldest ballet and opera theatre in Russia. Although the building is not as impressive and luxurious as Mariinsky Theatre, it houses classic plays from the Soviet era that most of the locals love to see.

THeatre show St Petersburg

Since the Mariinsky Theatre is closed during summer, the Hermitage Theatre is the go-to theatre for most tourists. Aside from ballet performances, the theatre also hosts international music festivals and orchestra. Known for drama performances rather than ballet, Alexandrinsky Theatre claims to be one of the architectural gems in the city. The Nikolaevsky Palace and St. Petersburg Philharmonia are just two of other places where you can watch phenomenal musical and drama performances in the city.

10. Nevsky Prospekt

A 2.5-mile avenue, Nevsky Prospekt is the main avenue of St. Petersburg. Walking down this street will definitely satisfy your eyes with breath-taking architectures of significant Russian historical buildings. Stroganov Palace, Winter Palace, and Vorontsov Palace are just some of the majestic places along the avenue.

Nevsky Prospect, St Petersburg tour Russia

Nevsky Prospekt also claims to be the city’s central shopping street and nightlife. However, if you want to have a different and complete shopping experience, stop at Gostiny Dvor . It is the largest department store in the city and one of the first shopping malls in the world. Other famous landmarks that are along the street include Kazan Cathedral, Dom Knigi bookstore (the former headquarters of Singer company), the Admiralty, and Mertens Building . We highly suggest walking down the whole avenue from daytime to nighttime to get the whole experience of being a real city dweller when you visit St. Petersburg.

11. White Nights

As one of the world’s most northern city, St Petersburg experiences wondrous ‘white nights’ in the peak of summer. It starts in May when the arctic sun stays out late, and eventually never sets. The lack of darkness affects the very fabric of life in the city and the whole town seems to be taking part in a two-month round-the-clock celebration. The streets are alive with people right through till morning, a motley flotilla of boats cruises the rivers and canals non-stop, and the city’s nightlife is at its most active.

St Petersburg White Nights festival

To experience the full splendour of these polar nights (late May to early July) when you visit St Petersburg, here are some of the activities and places for everyone. Enjoy walking around the creative hub (1) N ew Holland Island and the green spaces of (2) Summer Garden . Dip in the waters of (3) Lake Ladoga and (4) Komarova Beach . Take a midnight stroll and (5) watch the Neva Bridges open or (6) go for a canal or river cruise. Last but definitely not the least, join the Russians as they celebrate (7) Scarlet Sails.

12. Scarlet Sails Festival

In celebration of youth and to congratulate school graduates, the Scarlet Sails is an annual festival in St Petersburg. It is based on the fairy tale written by Alexander Green which celebrates love, hopes, and dreams. Scarlet Sails started in June 1968 but was suspended after a decade. However, it returned in 2005 and we promise, this biggest annual festival in Russia will be one of the best moments of your trip when you visit St Petersburg. Besides, what is a better occasion than celebrating hopes and dreams of your life? It has won multiple awards and has been considered as an international event since it attracts almost 3 million guests and tourists each year.

Visit St Petersburg during white nights festival

The festival starts at a concert on Dvortsovaya Square for school graduates. However, for non-graduates who wants to celebrates could go to Vasilievsky Island as an alternative. Then the concerts are followed by a light and water show on the Neva River after midnight. The most awaited show of the festival involves orchestra, water show, lights, pyrotechnics, and special appearances of ships sailing on the river. It usually lasts for 20-30 minutes and is always celebrated around the 15th to 25th of June every year. Make sure to check the schedule and weather before you visit St Petersburg.

13. A culinary delight for every taste

Restaurants in Russia’s second-largest city range from luxurious establishments fit for a tsar to humble cafés that serve down-to-earth traditional local food like pancakes and soups. There are countless places to explore, from traditional Russian cuisine in palatial surroundings to modern rooftop terraces serving international fusion menus.

Visit St Petersburg, tour Russia

Stroganoff Steak House is said to be the only steakhouse in the country that hand butchers and dry ages imported meats from Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. Literary Café was where Pushkin ate before his last in 1837. It serves Russian and European dishes. Russkaya Rybalka cooks only fish in various Russian cuisine. St Petersburg also serves different cuisines from all over the world. Erivan offers Armenian dishes, Francesco serves original home Italian recipes, Beau Rovage provides sophisticated French cuisine, and Ginza , one of the trendiest restaurants offers Japanese and Italian food .

Russian food, Visit St Petersburg

For those with a tight budget, of course, you could still enjoy exploring the city with a full stomach. Tandoor is an Indian restaurant which serves Russian curries. 1818 Kafe and Bikes offers street foods such as Shawarma, pizzas, khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread), and Syrniki (sweet cheese fritters). Savour traditional and authentic Russian food in Na Zdorovye! and for sure, you’ll come back for its fresh dishes and fast service. Green Room serves big portions but affordable Blini (Russian pancakes) and other Russian meals. We also recommend Stolle Pies —a bakery chain known for their fresh savoury and sweet pies.

However, if you happen to visit St Petersburg during the summer, one of the best ways is to experience the city is to eat out at the summer terraces. Each restaurant will give you different views of the city while delighting yourself with every flavour of the food you ordered. Victoria, Artist’s Attic Fondue Bar, Mansarda, Chayka, and Mix in St Petersburg are just some of the best summer terraces we love. For sure, you’ll find more when you visit St Petersburg.

14.  St Petersburg’s glamorous nightlife

St Petersburg was the first city in the country to have the first rock club and of course, the first to adopt the clubbing culture. The city’s nightlife has one of the most varied clubs and bars in the world. From cocktail, rooftop, karaoke, sports, gay, to (of course) vodka bars, whatever floats your boat, St. Petersburg will be there for you.

Fish Fabrique is an underground club which serves cheap drinks coupled with good music. Vodka Room No. 1  as you guessed offers a wide selection of vodkas as well as traditional snacks. If you’re more of a rock and roll star, Money Honey is the pre-drink place where you can chug pints of local beers. However, you may opt to spend your whole night here as you wish. If you have a knack for cocktails, MadLabBar makes exclusive cocktails perfect for every taste bud and hosts dance parties on weekends. For a fine wine night, head to Probka and indulge sophisticated Italian food. Coyote Ugly have bartops created just for dancing. So if you’ve had enough shots or just feel like dancing, move your body and share the time of your life with Russians. If you’re into contemporary music, Stackenschneider plays electronic music and promotes various independent music talent.

15.  Visit St Petersburg, it is safe.

The city has long been free of natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Theft crimes have also been reported to have dropped in the past few years. Just make sure you’re not flashing your money everywhere you go and you’ll be free from the eyes of pickpockets when you visit St Petersburg. Apart from pickpockets, St Petersburg is definitely one of the safest cities you could travel to.

*What to pack for St Petersburg?

If you’re planning to visit St Petersburg from late May onwards, normally, the weather will be warm and humid (from +18C to +25C), but not excessively so and evenings can be cool even when the sun is still shining. It’s worth bringing at least one warm sweater. It should be pointed out that, if you’re over the age of fifteen, shorts will immediately mark you out as a tourist. Even if the weather in St Petersburg is really hot and dry, there is almost always a chance of rain, so don’t forget to take your umbrella with you. While you will find summer wear acceptable, do bring less casual attire if you plan to enter Russian Orthodox churches, which will require that men and women have their legs covered and women have their shoulders and hair covered. Evening concerts, which are prevalent during St Petersburg White Nights, will also require less casual attire than what would be worn for daytime sightseeing.

Reasons Why You Must Visit St. Petersburg

Culture & travel.

There are numerous reasons to visit the magical city of St. Petersburg. As a matter of fact, St. Petersburg is a city that every traveler would love to see, with its incredible historic architecture, world-class museums, art galleries, cathedrals and palaces, arched bridges and canals, noble parks and gardens, colorful clubs, and nightlife. It is certainly not a coincidence that around 8 million tourists visited this city every year before the pandemic.

The Hermitage Museum, Peterhof Palace, Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral are just some reasons to visit historical St. Petersburg.

The Hermitage Museum is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, housing the mansions of Russian imperial families, European fine arts, and collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. Even the Hermitage Museum alone is one of the most important reasons to visit this city. Another of St. Petersburg’s most striking tourist spots is the Peterhof Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be prepared to witness unmissable views, especially when the fountains in the palace garden are active in summer.

It is a great benefit to plan your itinerary to coincide with an organization at the Mariinski Theatre because you can watch world-class theaters, ballet, and opera events in this venue. Besides, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, one of the city's largest and most spectacular religious buildings, will add color to your St. Petersburg tour. Considered one of the five largest domes in the world, the cathedral was designed with gold, bronze, and precious stones, and you can accompany one of the most wonderful views of the city from this cathedral.

1

St. Petersburg’s rivers, canals, and bridges are different ways to explore the city.

If you are visiting St. Petersburg, which is known as the ‘Venice of the North,’ between May and October, you should not neglect to organize a boat tour of the city’s central rivers and canals. As a river tour, different alternatives are departing from Nevsky Prospekt pier. While some tours offer English alternatives, it is even possible to create your route by taking your drinks and food with you on some small boats. Almost most tours include parts of the Fontanka and Moyka Rivers, the Griboedov and Kryukov canals. While some tours are cruising towards the Neva River, you may also have the chance to see the bridge of the Neva, which opens and closes, especially at midnight. Regardless of the route or format, river cruises are one of the greatest ways to observe this attractive city's architectural beauty and romanticism from different angles.

Legendary unmissable beauty: ‘White Nights’

During the white nights, which last from the end of May until almost August, the sky never gets dark, and there is daytime for up to about 19 hours. In these periods, the sun sets below the horizon and never fully shows its face, and thus begins the dreamy whitish-gray nights in St Petersburg. During this time of the year, St. Petersburg residents, local and foreign tourists witness all-night entertainment and the ‘Scarlet Sails’ festival, called the high school graduation celebrations. Concerts, fireworks, water shows, and art festivals are just a few of the activities that you should not miss.

2

St. Petersburg and its endless nightlife are another reason to visit the city

Perhaps not as much as Moscow, St. Petersburg is also impressive with its rooftop bars, dance clubs, lounge bars, and jazz clubs. Different bars where you can enjoy Russian vodka, creative cocktail bars where you can feel the pulse of St Petersburg’s nightlife, fun karaoke bars, underground bars are waiting for their enthusiasts. Also, if you are interested in the history of Russian vodka, do not forget to visit the Russian Vodka Museum, where you can taste different types of vodka.

If you are a fan of glass art, then you must visit the Chihuly Collection . I absolutely loved this art exhibition. I had never heard of Dale Chihuly before visiting the Collection. His work is so colorful and it sparkles against the black backgrounds in the gallery.

The flowers made out of glass are extraordinary and the multi-colored garden at the end of the collection is a real highlight. The museum is in the heart of downtown St Petersburg.

2. Marvel at The Dali Museum

You can’t visit St Petersburg and not go to The Dali Museum . Firstly, the building itself is extraordinary. Designed by architect Yann Weymouth, its 18-inch thick hurricane-proof walls become a glass dome known as the “engima”.

Dali museum

The museum and its collection have been around for about thirty years. Albert Reynolds Morse and his wife Eleanor became friends with Dali and major collectors of his works. They founded the museum and it is the largest collection of Dali’s works outside of his hometown, Figueres in Spain.

The museum offers a true multimedia experience with VR headsets, QR codes and immersive experiences. I most enjoyed the painting that appears to be a woman looking out over the Mediterranean, but when you get up close it turns into Abraham Lincoln. This is an old school style immersive experience thanks to Dali!

Don’t miss the small outdoor area that contains some Dali sculptures and a bench with a melting clock.

3. Visit the Morean Arts Center

The Morean Arts Center dates back to 1917 when the Art Club of St Petersburg was founded. Today, the center consists of four different venues in St Petersburg. It showcases local artists, runs exhibits throughout the year and offers a wide range of classes.

4. Watch Glass Blowing in Action

The Morean Glass Studio is also part of the Morean Arts Center. Included in every ticket for the Chilhuly Collection is admission to this studio that runs glassblowing demonstrations on the hour. It is fascinating watching the artists move the liquid glass from ovens to twists to cold water and seeing the actual glass blown through long thin pipes. They also have a great shop filled with beautiful blown glass objects.

5. Enjoy more glass art at the Imagine Museum

The Imagine Museu m is a newer addition to St. Petersburg’s art scene. The museum features a collection of contemporary glass art from around the world. The museum’s collection includes a range of glass sculptures, installations and immersive glass art experiences.

9. Have a Cuban Sandwich

bodega roast pork sandwich

Famed for its Cuban sandwiches, Bodega is located at the Western end of Central Avenue. Have a sandwich or a plate of meat with rice and black beans. I loved my pork sandwich and also enjoyed a delicious fresh juice.

10. Take the Trolley

St Petersburg has several trolley services for getting around. The Central Avenue Trolley runs up and down Central Avenue, of course. The Downtown Looper covers a broader route.

13. Have a key lime pie bar at the Hyppo

16. Watch Your Beef Tartare Being Mixed at Allelo

Allelo is a Mediterranean restaurant on Beach Drive with outdoor and indoor seating. The restaurant has a beautiful interior – I particularly liked the flamingo mural above the bar.

Allelo steak tartare

I enjoyed several of Allelo’s signature dishes when I visited. First up was the beef tartare, which was mixed in front of us. Then we had some amazing Cauliflower charred, crispy and creamy. The cauliflower was charred, the cauliflower sauce underneath was creamy and the shaved cauliflower on top was crispy and wow!

Allelo ceviche

Next was the octopus with melon, blueberry and chevre and then some outstanding Snapper Cruddo. A fantastic meal in a lovely location.

Along the Gulf Coast

St Petersburg and Clearwater are deservedly famous for their stunning beaches. I have written an entire article about those beautiful beaches ( best beaches in St Petersburg ) so in this article, I will focus on things to do that aren’t lying on beautiful beaches.

17. Go Shopping in Passe-A-Grille

My favourite area in St Petersburg was the charming Passe-A-Grille. The heart of Passe-A-Grille is the super cute 8th street. Head to Dody for great beach and apres beach gear. A Little Room for Art is a super cute small gallery featuring local artists.

pass-a-grille mural.

And don’t miss visiting the Evander Preston Gallery on 8th Street. Evander Preston was an artist famed for his jewelry, brewing, food and art collection. I loved the unique jewelry that was for sale. The building in which the gallery is housed was where Preston lived. It is not generally open to the public, but sometimes visits can be arranged and the art collection is fascinating.

18. Watch the Sunset from the Berkeley Beach Club Rooftop Bar in Passe-A-Grille

Later in this article, you’ll see that I stayed at the Berkeley Beach Club in Passe-A-Grille and absolutely loved it. They have an awesome rooftop beach bar with fantastic gulf views. It is a fantastic place to watch the sunset in St Petersburg.

19. Have dinner at The Dewey in Passe-A-Grille

And why not add in a meal at The Dewey? This is Berkeley Beach Club’s much-lauded restaurant. Their menu is modern Florida and is particularly well known for its outstanding brunch.

20. Enjoy an over-the-top cocktail with a sunset view at Hurricane in Passe-A-Grille

This slightly over-the-top and very colorful seafood restaurant has been serving its signature Organic Partida Margarita for over 43 years. Grab your drink and head to one of the two rooftop bars and enjoy the sunset. This is also a good place to try a grouper sandwich, a specialty of the area.

Pass-a-Grille Hurricane

21. Stretch on the beach

I’ve done yoga in my places in my travels but this was my first time vinyasa-ing on the beach and I loved it. Adding the sound of the water and the ocean breeze to my practice took it to another level. I did a sunrise beach yoga class in Passe-A-Grille with Ocean Fitness . If you have jet lag and are most likely to be up early (which I was) I highly recommend booking the sunrise class.

pass-a-grille beach yoga

Ocean Fitness also offers sunset yoga and stand up paddleboard yoga classes and lessons. Kerry, the owner is fab. Super friendly and enthusiastic and happy to adjust the class to suit your level of experience and mood.

22. Cool down with an Iced Coffee at Indian Shores Coffee

Located on Gulf Boulevard just before Indian Shores beach (from the south), Indian Shores Coffee is a super cute cafe that serves excellent coffee. There is also a pleasant almost tropical outdoor seating area.

23. Sip a Pina Colada at Palm Pavillion

Palm Pavillion opened on Clearwater Beach in 1926 and has been serving up outstanding Pina Coladas and Grouper Sandwiches ever since. It has the best possible location on the edge of Clearwater Beach, try to get a table on the covered outdoor terrace.

Palm Pavillion pina colada

The mood at Palm Pavillion is super relaxed and the food is fantastic – I enjoyed both deep fried grouper cheeks and the grouper sandwich (I like to be thorough). And there is live music at Palm Pavillion every day, rain or shine.

24. Rent a Glass Bottomed Kayak

Pick up your glass bottomed kayak on Treasure Island beach and head out to the mangroves around Eleanor and St John’s Pass Islands. You might see dolphins and/or manatees. Beach chairs and snorkel masks are supplied.

NB: This is a do-it-yourself kayaking activity, not a tour.

➡️ Book Your Glass-Bottom Kayak

25. Take a Paddle Board Tour

No experience is necessary to try this paddle boarding tour . The experience kicks off with lessons (it is quite easy to get the hang of paddle boarding – it is all about practice). Head out to Coffee Pot Bayou and Bird Island. You’ll have the chance to see up to 30 different species of birds.

➡️ Book Your Paddle Board Tour

26. Take a Sunset Walk along St Pete’s beach

One of the nicest things about the beaches of St Petersburg is that they keep on going so you can walk for as long as you are comfortable. For me, the best time to walk along the beach is sunrise (when I am usually asleep :-)) and sunset. Kick off your walk about one hour before the sun is due to set and enjoy watching the light change as the sun drops.

27. Have a glass of wine at the Pink Palace

There is no missing the Don Cesar Hotel. It is perhaps St Petersburg’s most iconic landmark. The Pink Palace of Hotel Don Cesar is famous for its stunning architecture, beautiful beachfront location, and world-class amenities.

They also have a great bar with loads of outdoor seating. It is a great spot to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of a sunset walk along St Pete’s beach.

28. Order the Key Lime Pie at Don Cesar

Don Cesar key lime pie

I also had a delicious dinner at Hotel Don Cesar but my gosh it is the key lime pie I dream of! The top layer was chewy gooey meringue rather than straight cream. The lime custard layer was perfection. And the entire dessert had a green white chocolate shell of sorts and was just amazing.

29. Go Shopping and meet the Pelicans at John’s Pass Village

ST John's pass pelicans

There is a lot going on at John’s Pass Village. More than 100 shops, restaurants and bars, every type of water sport you can imagine, boat hire and pelicans. This is the place to go if you are looking for Florida souvenirs. I also bought a pair of hot pink shorts at John’s Pass, which I have worn frequently.

30. Kiss a Crocodile at John’s Pass Village

Yes a real life crocodile can meet your lips at the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center at John’s Pass. You’ll see all kinds of crocs and amphibians. And if you’re up for it, pay a bit extra and a small croc with a mouth taped shut will pretend to kiss you for the camera. I was up for doing this until I got there and saw it. I then chickened out. If you are braver than me do send a photo!

St Johns wildlife centre

NB: After I visited, the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center experienced a fire. They were able to save a large number of animals. As I write this article, they are closed. However, I believe they plan to re-open when they can, so please go along and support them.

31. Visit Fort De Soto Park

This park is home to a historic fort that dates back to the Spanish-American War and was used during World War II. You can take a self-guided tour of the fort and learn about its history and significance. Additionally, the park has beautiful beaches, nature trails, and camping facilities.

35. get up close and personal with flamingoes at the sunken gardens.

One of the best things I did in St Petersburg was visit the Sunken Gardens . These gardens began life as a sinkhole. In 1903, a local plumber purchased the land to drain the link and turn it into a glorious tropical garden.

sunken gardens

Today the Sunken Gardens are home to over 50,000 tropical plants and flowers, including orchids, bromeliads, and bougainvillea. For me, seeing the flamingoes was the highlight. There were loads of flamingoes and it was possible to get quite close to them for photos (be aware they are rather smelly). This was the closest I have ever been to a flamingo and I was delighted!

sunken garden flamingoes

The gardens are quite wild and beautiful – as is the sinkhole today! As you walk around the gardens, you will realise that you are heading down about 15 feet and to the original sinkhole – which is now a quite pretty pond of sorts.

sunken garden sinkhole

The gardens are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm and on Sunday from 12 pm to 4:30 pm. Admission is $12 for adults.

36. Check out the trees at Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum

Gizela Kopsick Palm Arboretum is a park-based arboretum showcasing a wide variety of palms from across the globe. This 2-acre park was once a city miniature golf course. Today it is home to more than 500 palms and cycads representing some 150 species worldwide.

37. Be Immersed at Fairgrounds St Pete

Fairground St Pete mermaid

Fairgrounds St. Pete offers an engaging indoor art space where visitors can shape their own experiences. This ever-evolving museum showcases diverse artworks, allowing patrons to immerse themselves in the storyline. As St Petersburg’s premiere venue for a blend of immersive art and technology, it celebrates Florida’s quirky and captivating essence.

Fairground St Pete prawn cocktail

When I visited, I experienced everything from a mega kaleidoscope to a room full of strawberry scents to a mermaid selfie opportunity to the Tampa skyline and best of all a giant prawn cocktail complete with a prawn-shaped disco ball. This is a great fun experience for all ages.

Where to Stay in St Petersburg

Berkeley beach club.

🌟Rating: 9/10 I 📍Location: Pass-A-Grille I 🏩View on Booking.com

I absolutely loved my stay at the gorgeous Berkeley Beach Club . Let’s start with its fantastic location on historic 8th Street in the oh-so-charming Pass-A-Grille neighborhood. As the hotel is literally on 8th street, everything you need, food and drink wise, is on your doorstep, and the beach is about a two-minute stroll away (Berkeley Beach Club will supply you with nice thick towels for beach time).

Berkeley Beach Club room things to do in st petersburg florida

The rooms are small apartments beautifully styled with polished floorboards, high ceilings and a Scandinavian-style interior design theme. The fittings and fixtures are of good quality, so the room has a high-end but relaxed feel.

Berkeley Beach Club bathroom

The kitchen is fantastic with a large fridge (water and icemaking in the door), hob, microwave, all the utensils you would need if you felt like cooking and a cute bar set up with stools. A small utility closet to the side includes a washer dryer, ironing table etc.

Berkeley Beach club living area

There are large screen TVs in the bedroom and in the living room. The living room has a large comfortable couch and armchairs. But perhaps best of all is the huge terrace area that comes off the living room.

Berkeley Beach Club sunset

The terrace comes with blue and white chairs, couches and tables. My terrace was perfectly positioned to enjoy watching the sunset over the beach. The terrace is shared with the rooms on either side, but plenty of room exists.

And there’s more! The Berkeley Beach Club has a great rooftop bar with even better views of the beach. Its restaurant, The Dewey, has received rave reviews and is worth a visit even if you’re not staying at this gorgeous boutique hotel (although why wouldn’t you be staying???).

I had dinner and drinks at the wonderful pink Hotel Don CeSa r and was impressed with its style – the recent renovation is clearly evident. I didn’t get to see any of the rooms, but I believe they have all been updated as well. It would be worth checking out their availability and prices if you are looking for somewhere a bit over the top.

#1 – State Hermitage Museum – Possibly one of the most important places to visit in St. Petersburg

State Hermitage Museum

  • One of the world’s greatest treasuries of art and antiquities
  • See the intricate and beautiful peacock clock – it’s amazing
  • The hermitage museum is spread out across several sites

Why it’s awesome: No St. Petersburg itinerary is complete without a visit to the State Hermitage Museum. Not only is it one of the most astounding hermitage museums in Russia, but the entire world!

I’d recommend setting aside a whole day for visiting St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. Incredibly, there are over 3 million works from around the world here! If you are short of time, you can marvel at the incredible outside facade from the palace square, as the building itself is just as beautiful as the exhibits inside.

The main building is the Winter Palace, which houses Greek and Roman antiquities, centuries of European art, and the staterooms of the Russian Imperial family from the 18th and 19th centuries! The whole palace is full of russian art and historic pieces that are truly special to this museum.

If you liked the Winter Palace, Catherine Palace is another marble palace worth checking out. It’s the summer residence of the Russian tsars and is a World Heritage Site. The building itself is stunning as the stucco details are drowned in gold. The north-side carriage courtyard is particularly stunning. But, it is a bit of a distance out of the city center so if you are running low on time and can only see one, go to the State Hermitage Museum.

What to do there: If you aren’t blessed with a lot of time for the museum, take a guided tour to see the highlights. One of the most curious things you won’t want to miss is the peacock clock.

The mechanical 18th century automated clock still sings today. It’s the largest example of 18th-century robotics that has survived to the present day without any alterations!

Some housekeeping – since the museum is so big it’s a great idea to get a map which covers the 6 buildings. That way, you can choose the things you’re most interested in.

It’s absolutely impossible to see everything! Also, the museum can get very popular in summer, so consider purchasing skip the line tickets!

#2 – Mariinsky Theatre

Mariinsky Theatre

  • See a ballet performance from the “Imperial Ballet of Russia”
  • A world-class concert hall
  • One of the most renowned cultural attractions in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This huge theatre is one of the most famous in the world. Built-in the 19th century, for over 150 years it has hosted some of the best actors, performers, and dancers in the world.

Although you can see operas and plays at the Mariinsky, it’s best known for ballet. In fact, this used to be known as the Imperial Ballet of Russia, so that should give you some idea of how revered it was (and still is)! Recently, the theatre has expanded.

In 2006, it added the concert hall and a second stage for opera and ballet in 2013!

What to do there: If you’re limited on a budget or time, you may not be able to extend to a show at the Mariisnky Theatre.

Although that’s a shame, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out completely. We’d definitely recommend taking a tour around the grand auditorium, one of the most beautiful and richly decorated in the world.

If your budget does cover it, don’t miss a show at this incredible place off your St. Petersburg itinerary. It’s also a great place to admire from the outside. Make sure you get pictures of the colourful buildings from Theatre Square!

why should i visit st petersburg

With a Saint Petersburg City Pass , you can experience the best of St. Petersburg at the CHEAPEST prices. Discounts, attractions, tickets, and even public transport are all standards in any good city pass – be sure invest now and save them $$$ when you arrive!

#3 – Saviour on the Spilled Blood – One of the best religious places to see in St. Petersburg

Saviour of the Spilled Blood

  • The most unique places of worship in the city
  • Home to one of the world’s biggest collections of mosaics
  • One of the most recognizable landmarks in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This incredible church known as Savior on Spilled Blood, was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was killed in an attack, which explains its macabre and graphic name of “spilled blood”.

Although St. Petersburg is filled with churches, this is arguably the most beautiful, and the reason it’s made it onto our list! The colourful church is just as bright and gaudy on the inside, where you’ll find one of the world’s biggest collection of mosaics.

Most people compare this to St Basil’s Cathedral in Russia, another of the country’s most famous landmarks!

What to do there: Any guided tour of the city will take you past the Saviour of the Spilled Blood Cathedral. Probably more than once! That’s because it’s right by the State Russian Museum, and plenty of other attractions are nearby. Also, Alexander II was a very important figure in Russian history.

If you have time, it’s definitely worth getting an hour-long audio tour of the church. It’ll tell you about the church’s history and construction.

Another religious building well worth your time when you travel to St. Petersburg is St Isaac’s Cathedral and Colonnade. It’s easily recognizable by its golden dome!

#4 – Peterhof Palace – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in St. Petersburg

Peterhof Palace

  • Once the main summer residence of the Russian Tsars
  • Excellent location overlooking the Gulf of Finland
  • Have a picnic in the Lower Park

Why it’s awesome: Since it’s located 45 minutes from the city, you’ll need to dedicate at least half a day to visiting Peterhof Palace. However, it’s well worth it!

Situated on the Gulf of Finland, this opulent palace is also known as the “Russian Versailles”. It’s not hard to see why, whether that’s down to the gilded domes, or the fountains throughout the extensive landscaped gardens.

Unbelievably, there are more than 60 fountains and 200 sculptures throughout the gardens at Peterhof. The most famous, The Grand Cascade, is one of the must-see St. Petersburg attractions!

What to do there: Don’t miss going inside the stunning Peterhof Palace. Classic staterooms, the ornate Ceremonial Staircase, and the Grand Ballroom are just some of the highlights of the interior.

Outside, there’s more to the gardens than just the incredible selection of fountains! The Lower Park has a canal that empties straight out into the Gulf of Finland and is a great spot to have a picnic.

Like many other St Petersburg attractions on this list, Peterhof gets very busy in summer. It’s definitely worth booking your ticket in advance, especially if they enable you to skip the queues!

#5 – Tsarskoye Selo and the Amber Room

Tsarskoye Selo and the Amber Room

  • Experience the lavish wealth of the Romanov Imperial Family
  • See a recreation of the Amber Room, thought to be lost in World War II
  • One of the most famous attractions in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: By now, you’ve probably realized that the palaces in St. Petersburg are pretty extravagant. It’s possible that the 18th century Tsarskoye Selo is the most opulent and lavish of them all, built for Empress Elizabeth by the architect responsible for the Winter Palace, Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

It’s a day trip out of the city, to the town of Pushkin, widely regarded as one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in St. Petersburg. The Amber Room is undoubtedly a highlight. Thought to be lost forever in the Second World War, the painstaking reconstruction of the room is impressive nonetheless!

What to do there: As well as visiting Tsarskoye Selo, while you’re in Pushkin there are a few other cool places to check out.

One of the top attractions in St. Petersburg is Catherine Palace, where you’ll find the Amber Room. Attached to that is also the Catherine garden, which is landscaped with a variety of English, French, and Italian techniques.

If you want to find somewhere a little quieter to escape to, check out Alexander Park. They’re a little more overgrown and spread out, but there are some interesting buildings hidden away in there!

#6 – Museum of Hygiene – Quite the quirky place to visit in St. Petersburg

Museum of Hygiene

  • Educate yourself on the dangers of germs and disease
  • See one of Pavlov’s dogs!
  • One of the more unusual points of interest in Saint Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: Yes, St. Petersburg is fascinating. However, if you’re just visiting palaces and cathedrals, it’s definitely not out of the question that you’ll get palace fatigue. You can only take so much of walking around all those long hallways and being astounded by art after all!

For a perfect tonic, head to the unusual Museum of Hygiene. It was established in the early 20th century to educate the city’s locals on good health practices. It’s especially worth a visit if you want to learn about the gruesome medical practices from the turn of the last century!

What to do there: There’s plenty to see in the display cabinets here that you won’t find anywhere else in St. Petersburg! Check out both female and male models with movable internal organs, wax anatomy models, and even some displays explaining the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Perhaps don’t eat before you visit here! One of the coolest displays you’ll see is Pavlov’s taxidermy dog. This may not be one of the most famous places in St. Petersburg, but it’s certainly worth a visit. Especially if you’re into science!

A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!

An eSIM works just like an app: you buy it, you download it, and BOOM! You’re connected the minute you land. It’s that easy.

#7 – Grand Maket Rossiya (Grand Model of Russia) – One of the more unique places to visit in St. Petersburg

Grand Maket Rossiya

  • Rent binoculars to see the whole scale of this cool recreation of Russia
  • The second biggest model in the world
  • See all of Russia’s most important cultural and geographical attractions in just one day!

Why it’s awesome: If you don’t have time to cover all 17 million kilometres of Russia (and let’s face it, who does?), then this is your next best opportunity! The Grand Model of Russia is the second biggest model in the world after Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg.

It’s not entirely to scale, but it does mean you can visit Moscow, the Ural Mountains, and Vladivostok all on the same day! There is 2.5km of train tracks which miniature trains run on, and over half a million LED lights, which you’re guaranteed to see as a day only lasts 15 minutes!

What to do there: Russia is so big that it may not even be possible to get around the whole model of it one day! If that’s the case, rent a pair of binoculars so you can take in the whole of this amazing model. If you do have a bit more time, fantastic.

You can have a go at controlling some parts of the model yourself! There are buttons on the side where you can control the speeds of the cars and trains in the model. Sometimes it’s just enough to watch what’s going on though.

Old women feeding their chickens, a tiny UFO, and escaping prisoners are all part of one of the most unusual attractions in St. Petersburg!

#8 – Nevsky Prospekt

Nevsky Prospekt

  • 5km street dissecting the city from east to west
  • Great for shopping – high end boutiques and designer shops here
  • Check out some of the best places to eat in Saint Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: One of the most bustling streets you’ll find anywhere, the central avenue Nevsky Prospekt is considered one of the greatest streets in the world.

As well as the Hermitage and the Mariinsky theatre, you’ll find some places that didn’t make our list of the best places to visit in St. Petersburg but are still worth your time!

These include Kazan Cathedral, the House of Books, and the Eliseyev Emporium. Just be careful when you’re crossing – much of the street is 4 lanes on each side!

What to do there: If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, you’re bound to end up on this thoroughfare at some point. It was originally planned as one of the roads to Moscow but is now one of the central points of restaurants for tourists!

If you want to walk the whole length of Nevsky Prospekt, you’ll need at least two hours, and possibly a little more if you’re to take in its major sights.

As well as historical and cultural sites, make sure to stop off to window shop at some of the city’s most exclusive boutiques, or sample Russian delicacies at the best places to eat in St. Petersburg.

#9 – St. Petersburg Metro – A great place to see in St. Petersburg if you love architecture

St Petersburg Metro

  • How to see Saint Petersburg in more ways than one
  • Marvel at the Grand columns of Avtovo Station
  • Some of the coolest architecture in the city

Why it’s awesome: St. Petersburg’s rapid transit system is about more than just getting from A to B. The stations here are opulent and rival the palaces and cathedrals above ground for their intricate architecture.

Although walking is often the best way to see a city, don’t miss out on taking the metro – even if it’s just to be astounded by the beauty of the stations!

What to do there: Moscow’s subway was the first built in Russia and St. Petersburg’s system was designed to mimic its beautiful architecture.

All 8 lines on the first line built-in 1955 are considered places of cultural significance. Check out the grand marble and glass columns of Avtovo Station and the sport-themed Sportivnaya. Spending a day on the metro may seem boring, but not here in St. Petersburg!

#10 – Slam City – A great place to visit in St. Petersburg at night!

  • A great example of alternative St. Petersburg nightlife
  • See live performances from local musicians
  • A club run by cassette-focused Russian record label

Why it’s awesome: Saint-Brooklynsburg is a cassette-focused Russian record label, but what on earth is that? Well, it’s responsible for one of the coolest additions to the city’s nightlife scene.

The music mixes American-style garage rock with old-school cassettes to give a very distinctive sound. The club has super cool décor, and it’s the perfect place to spend a party at night after a day visiting the museums and palaces of the city!

What to do there: Don’t miss a live performance from one of the coolest bands on the city’s music scene! The dress code is pretty extravagant, so make sure you pick out your brightest colours to fit in!

Slam City is at its most vibrant and raucous on a weekend, so go then if you can. It’s a St. Petersburg must-do if you want to experience the city’s alternative music scene!

#11 – Peter and Paul Fortress – The city’s historic citadel

Peter and Paul Fortress St Petersburg

  • A great example of historic Russian empire defences
  • A quick attraction to visit on a stop-over
  • Intricate Baroque detailing throughout

Why it’s awesome: The Peter and Paul fortress is the original citadel of the city found on a small island facing the Neva River. It was built in 1703 by Peter the Great when the Russian empire was the strongest empire in Eastern Europe. For a long time, it served as a prison for political criminals, from the early 1700s until the early 1920s.

It was designed by Domenico Trezzini, Peter’s court architect and the pioneer of the Petrine Baroque style that was introduced by the Russian Empire. The complex has six bastions (each named after close associates of Peter) with intertwining stone curtain walls. The structures have been adapted and embellished over the years, and while it is beautiful, whether it was actually a good defensive structure has been up for debate.

Within the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which was one of the first buildings to have been made. Originally it was made of wood and consecrated on 1 April 1704, but it was eventually replaced with stone a decade or so later.

What to do here: You can wander around the entirety of the Peter and Paul Fortress and visit the cathedral inside. The whole complex isn’t huge, it’s like a village inside a high wall, but it has a lot of intricate detailing that you might like to stop and marvel at.

It’s located right in the heart of the city center so it’s one of the best Saint Petersburg attractions to visit for a short stop-over. Across the river you will find the Palace Bridge, leading to Palace Square and the State Russian Museum.

St. Petersburg, FL Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Petersburg is from March to May, when the weather is comfortably warm and a plethora of outdoor events make the city come alive. You'll find more affordable room rates from June to November, but the threat of hurricanes is imminent and the weather can often be scorching. The temperature cools down significantly for the winter months.

What You Need to Know

Dogs are welcome  Feel free to bring your four-legged friend when visiting St. Petersburg. The city features six dog parks, a lengthy dog beach at the  Fort de Soto Park  and a dog-friendly  Saturday Morning Market .

Theme parks are a short drive away  Don't fret – you can still enjoy Florida's thrilling theme parks while visiting St. Petersburg.  Busch Gardens  (near Tampa ) is about 30 miles northeast and  Walt Disney World  is about 70 miles northeast.

Enjoy the wildlife  The Sunshine City is home to an abundance of wildlife, so keep an eye out and enjoy the scenery. Dolphins are seen year-round, while manatees appear in the wintertime. Beachgoers should do the "stingray shuffle" as they wade into the surf to avoid stepping on buried stingrays. Plus, the city features the most diverse water bird colonies in North America.

Call before you go  Some attractions will close completely for major city events – such as the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March – so you'll want to double check the attractions' hours before you visit.

How to Save Money in St. Petersburg, FL

Invest in a GO Card  If you plan on getting around the city by bus, you may want to use a reloadable GO Card. These can be purchased on the bus with exact change. Regular fares cost $2.25. You can also pay for fares with exact change.

Pick the right beach  Sunshine City features plenty of beaches but almost none of them offer free parking. Municipal lots, such as those offered by Treasure Island, often offer the best prices. If you'd rather not bring your own set of wheels, the Suncoast Beach Trolley is an inexpensive shuttle that runs between the area's beaches and offers connecting service to downtown.

Indulge in free events  The city hosts more than 1,000 events each year. Check the St. Petersburg Calendar to take advantage of the ones that are free while you're in town.

What to Eat

As a city on Florida's Gulf Coast, seafood is a must in Sunshine City. Make sure to visit 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House and The Maritana Grille (at The Don CeSar ) for exquisite seafood dishes like fresh oysters, coconut shrimp, tuna tartare and crispy calamari. And if you're not a fan of fishy food, there's plenty else in the city to eat as well. Beach Drive and Central Avenue feature alfresco dining. If you'd like a change of scenery, the Saturday Morning Market is a great place to pick up fresh produce, and food trucks all over the city offer fantastic street fare.

Getting Around St. Petersburg, FL

The best way to get around St. Petersburg is by car. The roads are easy to navigate and parking is inexpensive, except in downtown lots during sporting events. Within the downtown area, many attractions are within walking distance of one another, so if you're staying in the city, getting around by foot is another easy way to see St. Petersburg. You can also explore with the help of public transportation – buses and trolleys run throughout and the fare is relatively inexpensive.

To visit St. Petersburg, you can fly into St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), located about 12 miles north of downtown, or larger Tampa International Airport (TPA), located about 20 miles northeast of downtown. Though buses run between St. Pete-Clearwater airport and the city, the travel time can be more than triple what it is by car. So, the most convenient way to reach St. Petersburg (from both airports) is by either renting a car or taking a cab.

Fort De Soto Park features 7 miles of waterfront that provides breathtaking views of the sunset.

The Baby Boomer's Guide To Travel

How to Visit St. Petersburg without a Group Tour

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

Russia seems to be quite the point of contention among the travel community. Some seem to love it, while others swear to never return. Of course, this could be due to differing travel styles.

Large group tours are a common way to visit Russia, and although they can offer a relatively stress-free experience, restrictive travel can be quite frustrating. If organized tours aren’t your thing, the alternative is to strike out on your own to visit some of Russia’s top destinations.

Thankfully, My Itchy Travel Feet Featured Writer, Debi Lander from ByLanderSea , is here with tips on how to visit St. Petersburg without a group tour. She’ll show you how to see the best of this beautiful city.

Why visit St. Petersburg, Russia?

Boomers grew up thinking of the Soviet Union as a political enemy. The Communist-controlled country remained off-limits for travel most of our lives. However, in the late 1980’s the Baltic areas broke away and established independence and contributed to the fall of communism in 1991.

The onion domed spires of Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is a beautiful St. Petersburg travel experience.

Russian borders were reestablished and gradually opened to foreigners. The country has since emerged as a fascinating cultural attraction.

Today, the entire historic center of St. Petersburg earns World Heritage site status and ranks as one of the most desirable travel destinations in the world. You’ll find some of the most unbelievably opulent palaces, magnificent museums and ornate churches anywhere.

Tips for visiting St. Petersburg without a cruise or group tour

The most popular and easiest method to tour St Petersburg or Moscow is on guided excursions from a cruise ship . No visas are necessary for boat-based passengers. However, the cruise itineraries typically allow only two days in each city. In my opinion, that is not nearly enough.

I wanted an extended visit providing me a chance to see more, indulge the food, experience the ballet, and interact with the people. Therefore, I opted to arrive in St. Petersburg on my own. I’m sure some travelers might feel the need for group tour support, but there is nothing to fear, and I strongly encourage you to consider the option.

Can you travel to St. Petersburg without a Visa?

In a word, No. You must pre-plan if you wish to be admitted within the Russian borders.

A visa is required and to apply, you need to secure flight and hotel reservations first. Seems backward to me, but just accept the rules. After obtaining your reservations, find an agency to assist you with the lengthy application.

Once I submitted my visa application and planned itinerary to the Visa Express Agency , my passport was returned within about two weeks. The agency is very helpful, but I warn you, the application is long, detailed and rather expensive—approximately $300.

Plan your St. Petersburg trip:

My Itchy Travel Feet recommends the following resources for planning your trip.

  • Look at Skyscanner to compare flights , then book directly with the airline.
  • Research the best places to stay in St. Petersburg at Hotels Combined.
  • Make your final hotel choice after checking the reviews at TripAdvisor.
  • Purchase trip insurance that covers medical because Medicare doesn’t cover you outside of the U.S.
  • Check to make sure that your medical evacuation membership is in force. Travel insurance transports clients to the nearest hospital not to one that they know and trust in the U.S.

Arriving in St. Petersburg

A canal in St Petersburg

Airport arrival and passage through customs presented no problems. My travel buddy Judy and I chose to rent an apartment in St. Petersburg for ten days. The cost was slightly less than $100 per night.

With two travel days (arrival and departure) we were left with eight days to tour the sights, a number that turned out to be just right. We also saved money by cooking and eating some meals in the apartment.

We arrived late at night so went right to bed after we settled in. The next morning Judy and I walked down Nevsky Prospect, the Avenue des Champs-Élysées of St. Petersburg, and jumped aboard the Hop-on, Hop-off bus to get a feel for the city. Yes, you can purchase tickets ahead of time here .

Lions guard a bridge in St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg is a young European city, built on marshland by Peter the Great starting in 1703. So, instead of learning ancient history, you concentrate on the last 300 years.

The city is nicknamed the Venice of the North, and we boarded a canal cruise that afternoon, passing center city points of interest like the Hermitage, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Admiralty, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

I recommend the canal cruise as a relaxing way to view the fantastic architecture, a mixture of Baroque and Art Nouveau, and to connect with the waterways through the city. Find canal cruise tickets here .

Hire a private tour guide in St. Petersburg

We spent the next five days with a pre-planned private tour guide and driver from Insider Tour . Our assigned guide, Valentina (virtually a walking encyclopedia of Russian history and culture), shared her knowledge as she escorted us through the famous landmarks, including those out of town such as the Catherine Palace, Pavlovsky Palace and the Peterhof Palace and Gardens.

Valentina spoke excellent English, and her years of experience added explanations of how sites were used for different purposes during the communist era, not something you’d readily read in a guidebook. While a private or small group tour guide is more expensive, the advantages are many: increased flexibility, site visits based on your interests, no waiting for latecomers or that herded around feeling.

What to See in St. Petersburg

We began with a tour of the Fortress of St Peter and Paul on the Petrograd side of the Neva River. On this July day, locals were sunbathing on a small beach.

We entered the Cathedral; known by its soaring copper needle-nose steeple, to see the tombs of the Romanov Tsars and their families. Unusual mint colored lighting and glittering chandeliers fill the upper space and pink and green Corinthian columns made for a non-traditional Russian Orthodox Church. A central Baroque-style gilded icon screen is a fanciful masterpiece of trumpeting angels, twisted pediments, and a central icon.

The last Tsar, Nicolas, Alexandra and their children were held captive and sent to Siberia. They all were executed by rifle during the Russian Revolution in 1918. However, the tragic event left many questions, and their remains were not buried in the church until 1998. The remains of, Alexei, the only son and a sister were later identified and buried in 2015.

Touring the Hermitage

Green and white facade of the Hermitage Museum.

Another day we toured the Hermitage; one of the largest art museums in the world started by Catherine the Great. The vast collection is mainly housed in the buildings of or near the Winter Palace, much like the expansive Louvre.

One could easily spend a multitude of days within the courtyards and galleries, plus the throne room, malachite room, and a golden drawing room. One hallway is copied after one in the Vatican Museum. Art lovers will discover hundreds of priceless masterpieces from all the great, world-renowned artists as well as ancient relics.

Golden peacock displayed in the Hermitage.

Personal highlights included an enchanting mechanical Peacock Clock given to Catherine in 1781. It’s sheer whimsy resting within Catherine’s private entertaining area dripping with crystal chandeliers, gold leaf accents and mirrors.

Stopping by St. Isaac’s Church

St. Isaac’s Church, designed in 1818, is the largest Orthodox basilica and the fourth largest (by the volume under the cupola) cathedral in the world. I felt dwarfed within the high-ceiling structure covered in fresco and mosaics.

The site’s feeling of strength comes from its 48 colossal marble columns. Little wonder the stronghold’s basement was chosen to store many of the royal treasures during the Nazi invasion.

The icons in the church remain very dear to the Russian people. Difficult to imagine, but the church was deconsecrated and used as a museum of atheism during the Soviet era.

Exploring Catherine Palace

The blue, white and gold facade of Catherine Palace.

The extravagant Catherine Palace sits in Tsarskoye Selo or the Tsar’s Village, over an hour outside the city. The stunning elongated structure with 35 staterooms is a must-see destination. One ballroom is larger sized, but similar to the famous Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.

a gold encrusted ballroom at Catherine Palace in Russia.

The imperial palace also houses the mysterious and famous Amber Room, a room of amber treasures stolen by the Nazi’s and lost post-war. The currently restored room took over 25 years and millions of dollars to painstakingly recreate.

The one-of-a-kind room is nearly an exact replica of the original. The amber’s glow was so strong it felt like sunlight on my skin. I can only imagine how gorgeous the room must be in evening candlelight.

Visiting more Russian palaces

The yellow and white Pavlovsky Palace with domed roof.

Pavlovsky was Paul’s Palace , presented to Catherine the Great’s son. He and his wife traveled around Europe incognito, as the Comte and Comtesse de Nord, purchasing French clocks, Sevres porcelain, tapestries and furniture for their home. Paul had a passion for military items and Maria’s choices are definitely feminine.

Fountains lead the way to Peterhof Palace, St. Petersburg.

Peterhof Palace is similar in opulence and grandeur to the Catherine Palace, but its Peterhof’s Gardens that are compared to Versailles’ fountainous spread. The World Heritage site includes 500 acres, over 200 statues and 144 innovative and running fountains, many fed by underground springs. The overwhelming extravagance is well beyond expectations.

Admiring Church on Spilled Blood

Colorful onion domed roof at Church on Spilled Blood.

If I must choose, I’d name my favorite spot as the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, better known as the Church on Spilled Blood. The structure stands on the location where Tsar Alexander II was shot. He died afterward in the hospital.

The shrine was erected in his memory in the Old Russian style of architecture with onion-shaped domes. The building called to me with its fanciful collage of design and color, inside and out.

The intricate mosaics were created to make a powerful impact on visitors, and they do, especially for those of the Russian Orthodox faith. Warning: be prepared for a stiff neck from staring at the grandeur of art on the ceiling and high walls.

Don’t miss the Faberge Museum

A pink and green ornate egg is displayed in Faberge Museum, St Petersburg

Judy and I also visited the Faberge Museum joining an English tour at a pre-scheduled time. The museum, a renovated mansion, allows visitors to scrutinize the famous Faberge eggs presented as Easter gifts from the Tsar to his wife and mother.

The jewel-encrusted eggs open to reveal surprises such as a carriage that moves, or flower petals that open. The intricate eggs, some with micro-miniature portraits, are a prime example of the riches held by the royal family during a time when the peasants had nothing. Fortunately, these handcrafted treasures were rescued and saved from destruction during the Russian Revolution.

Additional  things to do in Petersburg

In addition to our guided excursions, we still had time to explore on our own. We made a short journey to photograph the ten massive granite Atlantes statues holding up a portico on the Hermitage. Supposedly if you rub their mammoth toes, they grant wishes. Of course, we wished and rubbed!

The feet of one of the giant Atlantes statues at the Hermitage Museum.

We also chose to use the subway and a bus to return to Peterhof Gardens as we encountered a rainstorm during our first visit. We took the Hydrofoil (as suggested by Valentina) directly back to St. Petersburg, adding ease and a Gulf of Finland adventure to our itinerary.

Judy and I also returned to St. Isaac’s another morning to climb to the top of the dome for a scenic view of low-lying city and all the waterways.

View of St. Petersburg from St. Isaac's Dome.

Two of my favorite events were attending a performance of the ballet and another evening at the symphony. Music and dance, especially ballet, must be part of the Russian DNA. Residents from all backgrounds attend the lively shows when they can.

After the performance, Judy and I joined many others crowding on to the city buses to return home. We felt like we belonged and had almost become part of the community—still another advantage of traveling on your own.

Ballet dancers at a Russian ballet performance.

Russia burns with a fiery soul, and her people carry it in their hearts. In general, we found them friendly and helpful. Many speak English, especially those under 50.

All economic levels use public transportation (which is excellent and downright cheap at about 50 cents per ride). They enjoy vodka, the arts and music.

Restaurants are inexpensive compared with other European cities, but tickets for the arts are more comparable to the US. I can’t tell you about late nightlife because I didn’t experience it.

I came away with a much greater understanding of Russian history, the current culture and how it has changed since the fall of communism. The Russians we met were no different from other Europeans; they wish for freedom and strive to raise their families as best they can. Without politics, it seems, we are all alike.

A Few Tips:

  • I sadly did not allow time to tour Moscow. In retrospect, I believe that was a mistake.
  • Plan ahead and allow time to investigate itineraries and get your visa.
  • Upon arrival, have your host hotel order a taxi for you. You’ll be told the cab’s identifying number. Do not hire drivers hanging around baggage pick-up offering you a ride. They will overcharge.
  • Credit cards are accepted, but you’ll still need to pull out some Russian Rubles from an ATM.
  • Some of the best tourist shopping is near the Church on Spilled Blood and outside the Catherine Palace.
  • Beware of pickpockets, a sad but true situation, especially along Nevsky Prospect, the main drag.
  • During the summer months or White Nights, the sun doesn’t set until around 11:00 pm and rises again around 2 or 3:00 am.
  • Many signs are in English as well as Cyrillic. Learn to recognize the word “pectopah” which means restaurant and “bap” meaning bar.
