Take a Free Virtual Tour of the Winchester Mystery House

The California landmark is closed, but you can explore its bizarre architectural features from afar

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, is one of the nation’s most curious landmarks. Built by a millionaire widow over the course of 36 years, the sprawling mansion features more than 200 rooms , 10,000 windows, trap doors, spy holes and a host of other architectural oddities.

A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss , you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website.

The narrated video tour spans more than 40 minutes, providing insight into the property and the mysterious woman who built it: Sarah Winchester , wealthy and reclusive heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which manufactured an innovative rifle that became a fixture of Westward expansion.

Sarah Lockwood Pardee married into the Winchester family in 1862. Four years later, she gave birth to a daughter, Annie, who died about a month later. Her husband, William Wirt Winchester, died in 1881, leaving his widow with a vast fortune: 50 percent ownership in the Repeating Arms Company and a $20 million inheritance.

Staircase

Winchester decided to leave her home in New Haven, Connecticut, and head to California, where two of her sisters lived. In San Jose, she purchased an eight-room farmhouse that she began to renovate in 1886. The construction project continued until Winchester’s death in 1922, producing an enormous, labyrinthine mansion filled with logic-defying features: staircases that end at the ceiling, indoor balconies, skylights built into floors, doors that open onto walls. The designs, wrote Pamela Haag for Zócalo Public Square in 2016, were Winchester’s; she sketched them onto napkins or pieces of brown paper, then handed them over to a team of carpenters. Sometimes, she would have features built and plastered over the next day.

Exactly why Winchester embarked on this dizzying cycle of building, undoing and rebuilding is impossible to say. Popular lore has it that she was a keen follower of the Spiritualist movement , which was rooted in the idea that dead souls can interact with the living, and consulted a medium who told her she had been cursed by victims of Winchester rifles . The medium reportedly instructed her to constantly build a house for these ghosts. If construction ever stopped, she would die.

But as Katie Dowd of SFGate points out, there is “scant proof” for this theory. Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity.

“She had a social conscience and she did try to give back,” historian Janan Boehme told Robin Abcarian of the Los Angeles Times in 2017. “This house, in itself, was her biggest social work of all.”

The true nature of Winchester’s motivations is likely to remain a mystery. But as the video tour points out, the house she built was not only bizarre—it was innovative. Take, for example, the north conservatory. Winchester loved to garden, so the conservatory featured an indoor watering system and wooden floorboards that could be lifted up to water plants resting below.

Though visitors can watch the video tour for free, the Winchester Mystery House is asking visitors to consider purchasing a voucher for use at a later date.

“Like many other [Bay Area] businesses, closing our doors until April 7th will severely impact the employees who maintain the estate,” the website explains . “Come when you are ready, but please come!”

The chance to poke around the many hallways and oodles of rooms at San Jose's most spirited structure? It seems like an opportunity made for a young adult adventure novel, the sort of story that finds a group of flashlight-wielding kids alone on a moonless night.

But there is a way to peek around Sarah Winchester's nook-packed abode on your own, thanks to a brand-new Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360 Tour. The tour, which debuted on April 22, 2020, is giving people the chance to see deeper inside the legendary destination while they remain #SaferatHome.

You can, in fact, "(i)ndependently explore the secrets of the estate," thanks to the thorough experience. Matterport 3D Tours of Los Angeles created the fresh way to connect with the colossal casa.

The price? It's $8.99 , which helps the support the attraction during this time of closure. And here's something cool: Purchase the 360 Tour now and nab a complimentary pass when the house reopens.

Judge fines Trump $9K for violating gag order as testimony continues in N.Y. hush money trial

Winchester mystery house offers new 'immersive' tour.

SAN JOSE, CA —The Winchester Mystery House, San Jose's legendary, bizarre mansion with paranormal allure, is amping up its online offerings during coronavirus shutdowns with a new immersive tour.

"The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360 Tour" is a virtual walk-through that allows viewers to independently roam each level of the iconic residence, from the basement to the rarely seen fourth floor, including many rooms previously inaccessible on standard tours.

This online tour costs $8.99 and can be accessed here , and includes one complimentary pass for a future tour when the estate, home of Sarah Pardee Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, reopens.

A previously offered video tour, which initially was free when announced in mid- March , now is available to rent for $5.99 or to purchase for $13.99 and can be found online here .

“Sarah Winchester was ahead of her time in many ways. She was a woman of independence, drive, and courage, and the mansion she built is world-renowned for its many design curiosities and innovations,” said Walter Magnuson, Winchester Mystery House general manager. “Today, we are striving to follow in her footsteps by offering an innovative way for guests to explore the mansion unlike ever before. We are asking the community to help us maintain this important historical landmark until we can once again welcome guests in person.”

For the new 360 Tour, Los Angeles-based Matterport 3D Tours spent a weekend capturing the 24,000-square-foot home’s design features, including the stairs to the ceiling, secret passageways and doors to nowhere. Viewers will get a first-ever glimpse of a digital floor plan of the mansion.

"Sarah Winchester's 38-year renovation project became the most infamous historic home in the country, but upon her death, no blueprints or floor plans were ever found," managers said. "Now, after 97 years of guiding guests safely through its confusing halls without a map, the estate’s caretakers are thrilled to present this digital floor plan to the public."

Due to COVID-19 woes, in-person flashlight tours at the mansion, that were planned in March, were rescheduled for May 15 and 16, presumably if the site is reopened to the public. See details here.

The Winchester house website also offers a free downloadable coloring book and crossword puzzle for youngsters. Follow this link for more information.

The Winchester Mystery House, often dubbed haunted, has hosted tours since 1923 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a California Historic State Landmark, a San Jose City Landmark and is among leading attractions in the Bay Area.

The Winchester Mystery House has come up with some great offerings during this coronavirus quarantine crisis we find ourselves in. First they offered a free virtual tour .

They’ve since started charging for that , because let’s face it. They’ve lost revenue. If you’re among the millions without a job, you understand. They need to make money somehow.

There are two price points for the virtual tour (which is really more like an excellent mini-documentary):

  • Rent for $5.99. Grants you access for a 72-hour streaming period.
  • Buy the tour for $13.99. Lets you stream and download anytime.

But now they’ve upped the ante and are letting guests go floor-by-floor with their newest tour offering.

360 Walk Through Tour

The info from their newsletter about the 360 Walk Through Tour sums it up best so I’m just going to share that:

For the first time ever, the Winchester Mystery House is offering guests unprecedented access to the world’s most bizarre mansion with an all-new tour —The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360° Tour. This virtual experience allows guests to independently roam each level of the mansion, from the basement to the rarely seen fourth floor, while exploring many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours.

The Immersive 360° Tour is available now for $8.99. Additionally, with each purchase, guests will receive one complimentary pass to visit the Estate in person when it reopens.

Talk about a deal, right? Not only do you get to savor the house all to yourself, you also get a complimentary pass for when it reopens and all for only $8.99?

I’m so buying this to check it out.

Exploring the famous must-see areas of Sarah Winchester’s Victorian-Style mansion

Construction lasted for thirty-eight years on the Winchester Mystery House, one of North America’s most unusual and eccentric homes located in the heart of San Jose, California. Through the 160-room labyrinth-style mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, there are many beautiful and extraordinary examples of the Queen-Anne Victorian Style architecture. Ever since doors opened for tours in 1923, guests have traveled from all over the world to marvel in the beautiful and the bizarre. While visiting the Winchester Mystery House, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the must-see rooms inside of the world-famous mansion.

Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom in the Winchester Mystery House is the most expensive room in the house. The construction cost more than $9,000 when it was built in the late 1800’s, about 3.5 times the cost of an entire home during that time. Millions of guests over the years have raved over the many detailed instances of thirteen, the famous Shakespearean-inscribed windows (from Troilus and Cressida & Richard II), and the haunting tale of the safe hidden behind multiple layers. Not only is this one of the most well-preserved rooms in the house, it also inspired the ballroom design at Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride.

Witches Cap

Once referred to as an “important” room to Sarah Winchester by world-renowned psychic-medium James Van Praagh , the Witches Cap had it’s doors opened on the Explore More Tour in 2017. Famous for its alleged paranormal activity and the odd shape, the Witches Cap is a popular favorite amongst guests. Some staff members and guests have refused entry into this room, claiming a high amount of spiritual energy. Crowded feelings from an unusually shaped room or paranormal happenings? You’ll have to answer that for yourself.

Twin Dining Rooms

Over the past two years, the Winchester Mystery House has completed restoration project s on two of the oldest rooms in Sarah Winchester’s San Jose mansion. The Twin Dining Rooms are believed to be the original dining area of the modest farm house that Sarah bought when she moved to San Jose in the mid-1880s. The renovated rooms have become a popular sight to see on the Mansion Tour.

Sarah’s Bedroom

Sarah Winchester’s main bedroom in the Winchester Mystery House is a favorite stop on the Mansion Tour. From the original Luncrusta Walton Wallcovering, to the ornate ceilings perfectly preserved after nearly 97 years of tours. Sarah passed away in this room in her sleep in 1922 at the age of 83. Sarah relocated to this room after getting trapped inside of the Daisy Bedroom during the 1906 earthquake. One legend says that Sarah felt the earthquake was a warning from the spirits that she had spent too much money on the front section of the house.

winchester mystery house 360 tour

Séance Room

What many consider to be the heart of the mansion, the séance room was once the very private and off-limits room to everyone but Sarah Winchester herself. Legends say that nearby residents heard the bell tower (located outside of the séance room) at midnight and again at 2am. Was this to summon and release spirits to communicate with them? There is one entrance to this room, and three exits. One exit is through the entrance door, another leads to an 8-foot drop into the kitchen below, and the final is a one-way door that resembles a secret passageway. You’ll have to come see for yourself what lies on the other side.
