16 Best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids Area during the holidays & beyond

' src=

Let me introduce you to Wisconsin Rapids. This charming small town lies in the heart of Wisconsin about 100 miles west of Green Bay and 100 miles north of the state capitol, Madison. Located right on the the Wisconsin River, the town’s history features lumber and papermaking. These days it’s an important location for the cranberry industry; in fact, it’s considered the cranberry capital of Wisconsin!

Wisconsin Rapids makes for a great weekend getaway from nearby urban areas like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee and Chicago. So get ready to road trip and read on for a few of the best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids area. Throughout the post, you’ll see special sections about holiday activities. But first of all, where should you stay?

What You'll Find Inside this Post

1. Le Chateau-The Manor B&B

During the lumber boom in Wisconsin, lumber barons built some incredible homes. One such was John Arpin, who built Le Chateau in 1889 for his wife Clarice. It was one of the few homes at the time to have electricity, running water and a telephone, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society.

In later days this showpiece home was neglected and turned into several apartments. Lucky for us, it was refurbished between 2004 and 2008 and eventually made into a B&B. It’s now one of the best Wisconsin Rapids hotels. Even if you don’t stay here, you can visit for one of the historical tours the Manor offers year round.

Our stay at Le Chateau-The Manor B&B was one of the highlights of our trip. The fabulous Queen Anne-style home is furnished with antiques and reproductions from the Victorian period when it was built. Overlooking the Wisconsin River, it’s convenient location puts you close to downtown Wisconsin Rapids. You’ll receive a warm welcome and be treated like a member of the family by your hosts, Rachael and Mike Stormoens.

The gorgeous turret bedroom in the Manor B&B in Wisconsin Rapids

The Manor is a great place to relax; there are several common areas where you can hang out in addition to your room. You’ll find a Keurig and a huge selection of coffees and teas in the butler’s pantry. You might luck out and find some of the house specialty, cranberry-white chocolate cookies, there as well. Our suite of rooms was so amazing we never wanted to leave. One of the rooms was in the turret, which I loved! (We stayed in The Manor’s Retreat.)

Be sure to ask Rachael for a historical tour of the Manor during your stay. She’s done a great deal of research, and there’s a display board in the kitchen where you can learn more about the Arpin family who originally lived here and about the couple who lovingly restored the home. When you see the Manor, you won’t be able to believe it was once dilapidated and cut up into numerous small apartments.

In the morning, you’ll get a fabulous hot breakfast in the Manor’s stunning dining room. Leave yourself time for a leisurely breakfast. You’ll likely have other guests to chat with!

2. During the Holidays: Christmas Tree Tour

If you’re lucky enough to be there during the holiday season, as I was, be sure to take the Christmas Tree tour. Throughout the holiday season, the Manor is full of beautifully-decorated Christmas trees (over 65!), and despite there being so many, each one is truly unique. And the decorations don’t stop there; absolutely everything in this historic home is wonderfully decorated for the holidays, from the fireplace mantels (one in every room!) to the staircase banister.

Getting together with a group of family or friends and taking the Christmas Tree Tour is a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays. It’s also a delicious opportunity to see the jaw-dropping interior of this meticulously restored historic landmark. The gorgeous wood, details, and furnishings of this Victorian home will dazzle you as much as the trees!

Tours last about an hour, and refreshments are included.

3. Get some cheese, please!

Wisconsin is known as the dairy state and is especially famous for cheese. That’s why a fond nickname for Wisconsinites is “cheeseheads.” A visit to the Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese Company in Rudolph is a must-do when you’re in the area.

Cheese at the Dairy State Cheese Company in the Wisconsin Rapids area

Wisconsin Cheese wins more awards than any other state, and Wisconsin leads the nation in the number of cheese plants. The Cheese Company carries over 200 varieties of cheese and is a great place to get a unique gift, plus a few yummy treats for yourself. Their cheese curds are best sellers; be sure to try some. They have a ton of different flavors, from spicy cajun to dill, as well as traditional curds.

Aside from every kind of traditional cheese, specialty cheese, and cheese spread, you can find sausages and other items to complete your cheese board. Many locally made and harvested food products, such as honey, maple syrup, and cranberries, are available here.

Once you explore the retail store, check out the observation window to the cheese factory. You can see cheese-making in process. Last but certainly not least, have an ice cream cone at “Here’s the Scoop,” a little shop to the side of the retail store. When I visited in December, they had a special seasonal flavor, eggnog. Yum!

4. Have dinner at a Supper Club!

When in Wisconsin, you must go to a supper club. Supper club dining is definitely one of the best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids area. I did some research, and discovered that the Lake Aire Supper Club just outside of town has been in business for over 60 years. I knew that was where I wanted to go.

Old Fashioneds at the Lake Aire Supper Club in Wisconsin Rapids

Supper clubs are a Wisconsin tradition, and there are some traditional supper club staples. Follow tradition by having an Old-fashioned (the name of a cocktail). An Old-fashioned at the Lake Aire can be had sweet or sour, with whiskey or with rum. I had a mocktail Old-fashioned, and it was great!

Cheese curds for an appetizer are traditional supper club fare, and they are delicious besides. The Lake Aire cheese curds were especially good, and I know that the cheese factory in Rudolph is famous for its cheese curds, so perhaps there’s a connection.

Supper clubs offer a casual fine dining experience. Entrées tend to focus on high-end proteins like steak and seafood. I had scallops, and they were every bit as good as the scallops I had on the East Coast, where I was right by the ocean. They were huge, the quality was stellar, and the preparation was perfect. So tender they melted in my mouth. The memory of those scallops is making me tear up a bit right now. Bee had one of the specials, ribeye steak, which was excellent.

We were offered the choice of potato, macaroni and cheese, or rice, with some very nice vegetables served on the side. The ribeye came with asparagus (and was also garnished with shrimp), and the scallops came with peapods and baby carrots. We both had the macaroni and cheese, of course!

The Lake Aire is a popular place, so be sure to make a reservation. The staff are extremely welcoming and attentive. It’s definitely one of the best restaurants in Wisconsin Rapids. All in all, we could not have had a better experience. I would go back in a flash!

5. Visit the South Wood County Historical Museum

South Wood Historical Museum in Wisconsin Rapids

Housed in a stunning historic home, the South Wood County Historical Museum would be worth visiting to see the home alone. But it’s also filled with incredibly interesting and informative history displays. The museum offers changing exhibits as well. It’s certainly one of the best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids area for history and architecture lovers.

Did you know Grim Natwick, who animated the motion picture character “Betty Boop,” was from Wisconsin Rapids? He also helped create “Snow White,” “Gulliver’s Travels,” “Woody Woodpecker,” and “Mr. Magoo”. Part of the museum is dedicated to his early work and cartoon sketches.

The 1907 neoclassical-style mansion has 23 rooms. Some of our favorite exhibits were a general store and country kitchen, a school room reminiscent of the one-room schoolhouses that used to operate through the South Wood County area, and a Doctor’s office with medical tools and equipment that doctors from the region used.

6. During the Holidays: Christmas Tree Walk

We visited during the holidays when the annual Christmas Tree Walk was in full swing. During the Walk, the mansion is decked out with all kinds of fabulous Christmas trees designed and decorated by members of the community. Holiday-themed exhibits are on display as well. We loved the Santa Claus exhibits.

They also had complimentary Christmas cookies, so you know I had one. The museum has no admission fee, but I’d suggest making a donation to show your appreciation for this cultural and historical resource. And in my case, also for the delicious cookies!

7. Go crazy for cranberries

Wisconsin Rapids is located in the heart of cranberry country, which makes it the perfect place for a specialty food market featuring cranberries . Rubi Reds highlights the area’s cranberry industry in a retail setting. A variety of cranberry products can be found here, as well as other items that complement Wisconsin’s number one fruit crop. A wide range of gourmet and everyday Wisconsin-made food products and gifts is sure to delight both your senses and your taste buds!

The cranberries at RubiReds are grown, processed, and packaged in Central Wisconsin. This one-of-a-kind specialty store was one of my favorite stops! We picked up some cranberry wine—who knew there were so many vineyards in Wisconsin?

Cranberry wine at RubiReds in Wisconsin Rapids, this unique shopping experience is one of the best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids area!

Cranberry Capital

Wisconsin is the nation’s largest cranberry producer, and you might call Wisconsin Rapids the cranberry capital. Wisconsin Rapids is home to some of the largest cranberry marshes in the U.S., the 50-mile Cranberry Highway scenic drive, and the Cranberry Blossom Festival.

You can drive the Cranberry Highway year-round. We could see the marshes even in December. During the summer months, wind past family farms and century-old cranberry beds along with scenic woodlands. During the fall harvest season, you might see harvesting from the roadside.

8. Hit a Friday Fish Fry

Fish Fry Best things to do in Wisconsin Rapids

Friday Fish Fry is a Wisconsin tradition, so if you’re in Wisconsin on a Friday, you know what to do for dinner. Anchor Bay Bar and Grill is a great place to indulge, and is one of the best restaurants in Wisconsin Rapids for fish fry. Did you know fish fry is traditionally served with rye bread and cole slaw, as well as your choice of potato? It was news to me, and explained why we each got a big slice of rye bread on our plates.

You may be here for the fish fry, but Anchor Bay is also justly famous for their fried shrimp, which are served fish-fry style. Please try the shrimp, it is delicious. I recommend having the locally-grown Okray baked potato too. And by the way, you don’t have to have your fish fried—you can get it baked or sautéed instead.

Built right beside the water, Anchor Bay has huge windows facing the Wisconsin River. The dining room and the bar are on either side of the enormous fireplace. Stop and visit Captain Morgan for me!

9. Check out the Central Wisconsin Cultural Center

Key to the creative heart of the community is the Central Wisconsin Cultural Center. The Cultural Center holds art classes and offers live music and rotating exhibits. The Center’s galleries and showcases feature local and regional artists. Admission is free.

Best things to do in Wisconsin Rapids, Culutral Center

The Cultural Center advocates for the arts and fosters creative experiences of all kinds, recognizing that creativity is vital to the wellbeing of people and their communities. Classes include a pottery studio (they have a kiln!), mosaic windows, and music lessons. The Center serves as home to several area arts organizations, including the Central Wisconsin Choristers and the Arts for All Wisconsin Rapids Choir.

Year-round, the Cultural Center’s gift shop carries items from local and regional artists that are available to purchase.

10. During the Holidays: Holiday Gifts and Art Fair

Do you love to be able to do your gift shopping and support local artists at the same time? Well, I’ve found you the perfect place to do just that! During the Holiday Gifts and Art Fair at the Cultural Center, you’ll find hundreds of handmade items on display in the gallery and gift shop, all available for purchase.

There was an incredible variety on offer, from small ornaments to large framed paintings and substantial pieces of pottery. There’s really something for everyone!

11. Take a trip back in time at Beaver’s Dime Store

For a fun trip down memory lane, be sure to visit Beaver’s, the Dime Store in nearby Nekoosa. I must confess to being a notorious sweet tooth. I heard Beaver’s had an old-fashioned candy counter, so this place was high on my agenda. And it did not disappoint!

wisconsin rapids tourist attractions

Right when you walk in, you’ll see the candy counter with a whole lot of choices of candies sold in bulk. Front and center on the candy counter is a beautiful vintage scale, which is still used to weigh your candy purchases. I got some cherry sours, gumdrops, sourballs, malted milk balls, lemon drops, salt water taffy, caramels . . . wait, is that a lot?

I heard that Beaver’s still offered penny candy till fairly recently. They have lots of two-cent candy and some others for 10 or 15 cents, all of which make a dollar bill go pretty far! Beaver’s is also chock-full of a little bit of everything you might need, from flannel shirts to ribbons for your packages. During the Holidays, It’s holiday central, too, with great ornaments and even holiday-themed hats.

12. Another unique Wisconsin Rapids shopping spot: The Trading Post

We really had fun visiting the Trading Post . The antique and consignment store has been doing business in downtown Wisconsin Rapids for 10 years. You can easily spend a couple hours exploring all the aisles and little rooms. (In fact, this place is a bit of a maze, try to have a game plan so you don’t miss anything!)

Trading Post Wisconsin Rapids shopping

There is something for every taste and budget here. In addition to antiques and collectibles, you’ll find clothing, home goods, sporting goods, and lots of vintage treasures. New items arrive on a daily basis, so dedicated shoppers like to check back to see what’s new.

The Trading Post is located in the glorious historic Mead-Witter building, or block, as it takes up a whole city block!

13. Quirky coffee shop stop

Get some lunch at Out of the Box , a unique local coffee shop. The quirky coffee house and café is literally “Out of the Box,” having been created from two large metal shipping containers. A selection of great pastries, a breakfast and lunch menu as well as delicious coffee drinks help to make this one of the best places to eat in the Wisconsin Rapids area.

Out of the Box Coffee House Wisconsin Rapids

Their chai is divine, and so are their snickerdoodle cookies! They have a $10 Choose Two special where you can pick two from a half sandwich, a salad, or a mac-n-cheese. The mac-n-cheese is popular; it sold out right before I tried to order some! But the half sandwich I had with salad instead was delicious (salad and macaroni cheese was my intended order; it’s all about balance, they say). Their bread was great, and their salad was fresh and tasty.

OOTB is a family-owned business featuring foods using local and fresh ingredients. For the health-conscious, their line of gluten-free, fair trade syrups is free of trans fats. Their coffee beans are eco-friendly as well.

14. See a play at the Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre

Seeing a show at the community theater is a must-do one of the evenings you are there. Unlike most community theaters, Wisconsin Rapids Community Theatre owns its own theater. After performing in the theater of the community library for more than 30 years, they renovated an old downtown warehouse into a theater with the help of Wisconsin Rapids businesses and community members. What a feat! I was impressed with what a beautiful theater this is.

You can get drinks and snacks at intermission, and be sure to check out the wall of old theater posters. They have some goodies!

15. During the Holidays: See a seasonal play and visit the lights displays along the river

We were in Wisconsin Rapids during the holidays, and the Theatre was playing “The Miracle on 34th Street.” I’m sure it was a sold-out show, and a wide variety of folks attended. Parents with kids, senior citizens, and everyone in between enjoyed the performance. Be sure to check what’s playing when you’re going to be in town.

While you’re downtown in the evening, check out the holiday lights along the river . There’s quite a display!

16. Wisconsin Fire and EMS Memorial

The Wisconsin Fire and EMS Memorial in Ben Hanson Park is an important site in Wisconsin Rapids. It’s a moving tribute to all Wisconsin firefighters, especially those who have fallen in the line of duty.

Wisconsin Rapids was chosen as venue for this extraordinary memorial because of its central location in the state. I was impressed by the scale of the memorial and the beauty of the setting along the Wisconsin River.

The park covers 7.5 acres, and the tall trees and rolling terrain add to the location’s tranquility.

Wisconsin Firefighter Memorial in Wisconsin Rapids

The centerpiece of the park is a life-sized bronze statue depicting two firefighters coming the aid of a fallen crew member. The statue is flanked by the Memorial Wall, engraved with the names of Wisconsin firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Currently, 268 names are engraved on the wall.

The Visitor Center is near the south entrance of the Park. It’s a very striking building, similar in design to an early 1900s firehouse. There you’ll find informative displays, restrooms, and a water fountain.

In summary: The best things to do in the Wisconsin Rapids area

The Wisconsin Rapids area makes for a great weekend getaway , especially from nearby urban areas like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee and Chicago. Stay in the beautiful Manor B&B , and you’ll enjoy sleeping in a slice of area history. Take an historical tour of the house to learn about its past and admire the gorgeous Victorian architectural details.

Wisconsin Rapids is the perfect place to enjoy some wonderful Wisconsin traditions , such as dinner at a supper club and Friday fish fry . My recommendations are the Lake Aire Supper Club for a special dinner and Anchor Bay Bar and Grill for fish fry. I also loved the quirky coffee shop Out of the Box , fabulous for coffee and pastries or for lunch.

To sample the arts and culture of the area, be sure to visit the Cultural Center and attend a play at the community theatre . And don’t miss the Southwood County Historical Society , housed in a stunning 1907 neoclassical-style home. Another must-see is the Wisconsin State Firefighter Memorial .

Hit some fun shopping spots unique to the dairy state and cranberry country . Don’t miss the cheese factory , with so many kinds of cheese; the dime store , with so many kinds of candy; the cranberry store , where you’ll find cranberry products you never imagined existed; and the antique store where you’re likely to find a bunch of things you didn’t know you needed.

What a gorgeous looking place Cynthia. We visited Wisconsin for the first time last year during a road trip out West. Spending a week in Racine was a blast. The people were friendly and I enjoyed the pace of life out there. What a fun time.

Get cultured at the Milwaukee Museum Campus

Looking for family-friendly activities in Milwaukee? Head toward the city's lakefront museum campus to Discovery World, Milwaukee's world-class science museum. If you have littler ones, stroll across the street to the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Just north of Discovery World is the architecturally impressive Milwaukee Art Museum , a modern masterpiece designed by Santiago Calatrava. Time your visit to witness the spectacle of the building's wings (large movable sunscreens) opening and closing at 10 a.m., noon or closing time. If you want to feel like you're actually sleeping in an art museum, book a room at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel, which is located in the heart of downtown. Guests delight in the art exhibits on display throughout the hotel and applaud the in-room vintage record players. If you enjoy a martini with a view, consider the Blu lounge at the historic Pfister Hotel , offering panoramic views, cocktails and more from the 23rd floor.

Home to the main campus of the University of Wisconsin and its lovable mascot Bucky the Badger, Madison is more than just a cool college town. Activists and incoming college students appreciate that Madison, about 80 miles east of Milwaukee, has been the scene of many a protest, whether against the Vietnam War or in favor of marijuana legalization. What's more, the University of Wisconsin – Madison Memorial Union on the shores of Lake Mendota is a favorite for students and locals; grab a brat and brew and enjoy the view. The 72-room Graduate Madison is an easy walk to campus, dining, shopping and nightlife. Badger red is the hotel's unifying color palette, and guests give the hotel high marks for its nostalgic decor and artwork, including collages of political buttons, a nod to the town's legacy of social activism.

Try the cheese

Wisconsinites are lovingly referred to as Cheeseheads. Billing itself as the capital of cheese, this shop is a must-see for cheese lovers, featuring dozens of one-of-a-kind artisanal Wisconsin varieties. Lake Geneva

Lakeshore

Located near the Wisconsin-Illinois border, 7 miles north of the border and about 50 miles southeast of Milwaukee, Lake Geneva is popular for weekend getaways, with visitors describing it as the "Newport of the Midwest" for its opulent lakefront mansions. You can glimpse that luxurious lifestyle while walking the Geneva Lakeshore Path, a 25-mile walkway that circles the lake, bringing you through the backyards of opulent estates. Circling the entire lake would take all day, but you can pick a section and go for a jog or a stroll. Keep in mind that the path is not suited for strollers or bikes. Being home or second home to many of the Midwest's elite, the town is filled with great restaurants, shops and fun-filled activities throughout the year. Tourists descend on Lake Geneva during the summer season to rent boats, but fall and spring are also magnificent for weekend getaways. A warm-weather visit calls for a stay at The Abbey Resort, the only lodging directly on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Spend a winter weekend at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is one of the best choices for a winter visit to Lake Geneva, with a bevy of amenities and a modest ski hill. The resort's hill is decidedly not the Rocky Mountains, but there are three chair lifts, two carpet lifts, 20 runs and a terrain park. After a day on the slopes, skiers like to warm up with a hot toddy around the outdoor fire pit at the resort's Embers Terrace. Kids can dive into the fun at Grand Geneva's Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark while the adults chill out in the resort's world-class spa. Regardless of where you stay, winter in Lake Geneva means it's time for their annual one-of-a-kind Winterfest, one of the country's largest ice sculpture festivals.

New Englanders have their clambakes. The closest thing to that in the Midwest is the Door County fish boil, a one-of-a-kind culinary spectacle. It's one of the top things to do in this peninsula. A Scandinavian tradition, fish boils are a way of cooking fish in a large cooking pot over an open fire. Part of the experience is coming early, sitting around the fire and watching the hour-long cooking process, led by a Boil Master who serves as both chef and entertainer. When the food is almost ready, the Boil Master alerts diners that the "boil-over" is about to begin. Kerosene is then thrown onto the fire, making for a fiery finish. Fish boils traditionally include potatoes, coleslaw and classic Door County cherry pie for dessert. Though restaurants from the southernmost Sturgeon Bay to the north tip of the peninsula offer up these unique dinners, visitors give the White Gull Inn some of the best reviews.

Explore the surrounding state parks

Cave Point is part of Whitefish Dunes State Park on the Wisonconsin penuisula

Biking and hiking Whitefish Dunes State Park and Potawatomi State Park are some of the top outdoor activities in Door County. Door County Kayak Tours gets high ratings for their friendly, informative guides. When the weather is warm enough, travelers can camp at the area's state park to save some time and be best prepared to catch a sunrise over Lake Michigan.

Bordered by Lakes Michigan and Superior, Wisconsin offers diverse landscapes and attractions that are a delight to explore. To the north and west are large expanses of hills that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and areas of lowlands to the south and east have proven excellent for dairy farming. In summer, the beaches are some of the most popular places to visit.

While many of Wisconsin's top things to do are in its two largest cities, Madison and Milwaukee, smaller communities such as Spring Green , home to architect Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Taliesin, are also worth exploring. The state also offers many exceptional cultural activities and events, too, from the huge Oshkosh Airshow to Milwaukee's popular Summerfest .

Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from great fishing lakes and lakes to enjoy boating and leisure activities , as well as some of the best hiking and biking trails to be found anywhere in the country.

Oshkosh Airshow

The small town of Oshkosh on Lake Winnebago, northwest of Milwaukee, is famous for two things: the popular line of kids' clothing and its place on the world's airshow circuit. The world's largest meeting of aviators, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh has been held here every summer since 1970.

During the weeklong event, the Oshkosh control tower becomes the busiest on the planet as up to 15,000 aircraft of all shapes and sizes descend upon the airport. They're joined by an estimated half a million visitors, all here to catch thrilling aerobatic displays, as well as flybys from vintage and contemporary military aircraft.

Also fun to experience are the nighttime flying displays, evening movie shows and theatrical performances, and educational workshops. For those with the budget, a variety of aircraft rides, including aboard a huge B-17 bomber, are available. Also of note is the superb EAA AirVenture Museum with its collection of 200-plus aircraft.

Taliesin East: Frank Lloyd Wright's perfect country home

One of the most influential individuals to have called Wisconsin home was Frank Lloyd Wright. Numerous examples of the great architect's designs can still be seen across the state in which he was born and where he lived for much of his life.

But it's to Taliesin East in Spring Green — usually referred to simply as "Taliesen" — that most people flock. Set amid 600 acres of beautiful rolling countryside, this spectacular home was started in 1911 and was a work in progress right up to Wright's death in 1959.

Wright spent his summers here and then packed up and headed to Taliesin West, one of the top attractions in Scottsdale, Arizona , in winter. Students at The School of Architecture at Taliesin still do this each year. Guided tours are available, taking in the home, theater, studio, gallery, and school. Other highlights include an informative visitor center with a restaurant.

Other Frank Lloyd Wright buildings include the spectacular Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center on Madison 's lakeshore (it was actually built long after his death but was based on his original plans) and Milwaukee 's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church .

Madison has numerous great reasons to visit, with many of its top attractions found in the downtown core . One of the most attractive is the Wisconsin State Capitol. Completed in 1917, it's decorated with a 284-foot-high dome that's just three feet shy of Washington's Capitol building.

Free hour-long tours are available daily and take in many of the building's best interior features, including its large murals, exquisite marble work, and elegant rotunda with its states and monuments.

There's also an interesting museum about the building's history located on the sixth floor, which is well worth a look. One of the best views of the capitol is from the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center - it's simply stunning.

The Harley-Davidson Museum

Nothing says "freedom" quite like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a fact that is not lost on visitors to Milwaukee, the birthplace of the famous "Hog." The best place to find out more about this iconic machine is the city's Harley-Davidson Museum, home to more than 450 classic motorcycles.

This fun family attraction also has excellent displays of the brand's famous teardrop tanks, as well as exhibits telling the story of the people and places behind the machines. There's also a fun Harley-themed restaurant. If you can, try to time your visit to coincide with one of the museum's busy "bike nights," when fans and owners arrive in their droves to show off and admire these classic machines.

There are several self-guided tours available at the museum to give you more insight and a behind-the-scenes look at this iconic American company. You can tour the full 20-acre Harley Davidson complex by downloading a map to see buildings like the original shed where the company started in 1903, and the H-D archives houses documents, clothing, and marketing materials. A self-guided audio tour is available.

The Dells of the Wisconsin River

Sometimes called the Wisconsin Dells - though this is often confused with the touristy town of the same name - the Dells of the Wisconsin River is a spectacular five-mile gorge on the state's largest river. This area of outstanding natural beauty, much of it located in the state park of the same name, boasts many unique sandstone rock formations, canyons, and cliffs, some as high as 100 feet.

The Dells area is also home to an abundance of unique flora and fauna, such as cliff cudweed, found in only one other location on the planet, and six species of dragonfly. Given its fragile ecological state, it's not the easiest place to access, and those wanting to experience its beauty must do so by boat.

A variety of regular boat tours and excursions are available, taking in both the upper and lower areas of this spectacularly beautiful region.

Nearly large enough to house the city's entire population of 72,000, Lambeau Field opened in 1957 and is the longest continuously occupied stadium in the league.

Formed in 1919, the team is the third oldest in the NFL, and the league's only non-profit team (it's owned by the city of Green Bay). Whether you're a sports fan or not, you'll enjoy a tour of the stadium with its behind-the-scenes look at how a major league team operates.

Two superb self-guided sightseeing tours of Packers-related landmarks are also worth checking out: the Walk of Legends is an art walkway of 24 statues celebrating the history of football in Green Bay between 1895 and the present (and fun to explore at night), and the Packers Heritage Trail is a walking tour taking in city landmarks associated with the team.

Land o' Lakes region in Wisconsin

The lovely Land o' Lakes region is tucked away between Boulder Junction, Eagle River, and Rhinelander in the northern part of Wisconsin. Hugely popular with water sports enthusiasts, it boasts more than 200 unspoiled lakes of various sizes.

Campers and backpackers are particularly fond of the region, which is wonderful to explore by canoe or kayak. Highlights are its abundant flora and fauna, with good fishing and bird-watching, including an opportunity to catch a glimpse of some of the few remaining white-tailed eagles in the area.

The town of Eagle River is a good place to begin exploring the region and offers a variety of things to do, from fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and swimming in summer, to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Copper Falls State Park

While the Badger State is known for many things — in particular its dairy products and cheese — it's certainly not short of natural wonders, either. It's especially popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its numerous lovely waterfalls . While some of the most attractive are set in relatively remote locations, many are within easy reach of major urban centers.

One of the most popular Wisconsin destinations for waterfalls is Copper Falls State Park . Just a few minutes' drive north of the small town of Mellen , this beautiful park is, in fact, home to no less than three waterfalls. Two of the most visited, Copper Falls itself and Brownstone Falls in the park's north end, are each accessible via the Waterfall Trail, an easy trek that's suitable for even the casual hiker.

The third falls, Red Granite Falls, is located at the park's southern end and is also worth seeing. For those wanting to make a full day of it, a total 17 miles of hiking trails is ready to be explored within Copper Falls State Park.

All Steamed Up at the National Railroad Museum

There's no better family outing than the excellent National Railroad Museum in Green Bay . Home to more than 20 steam and diesel engines, plus numerous items of rolling stock, the museum houses a variety of railroad artifacts and memorabilia.

A highlight is the Eisenhower collection, which includes the Dwight D. Eisenhower , a streamlined vintage British engine used to pull the leader's military train across Europe during WWII. Fun events include excursions aboard a train decked out like the famous Thomas the Tank Engine, and haunted train rides at Halloween. An 80-foot-tall observation tower offers great views of the museum's collection and the surrounding area.

Take a Hike: Wisconsin's Wonderful Trails

One of the best ways to explore wonderful Wisconsin is to hike or bike across the state's extensive trail networks, an activity that's becoming increasingly popular with backpackers looking for an exciting outdoor adventure.

Many of the trails that cross the state provide a look at how landscapes have been shaped by glaciation, including the Ice Age Trail , an epic 1,000-mile-long National Scenic Trail stretching from Potawatomi State Park to St. Croix Dalles.

Then there's the North Country National Scenic Trail encompassing states from North Dakota to New York, 117 miles of it passing right through the heart of Wisconsin. A gentler and extremely pleasant hike is the Geneva Lake Shore Path , a 21-mile walking trail that crosses many of the state's classiest country estates (allow at least a full day if you're planning to walk the entire route).

Snowmobiling in Northwest Wisconsin

For the outdoor winter enthusiast there are few places that offer the variety and access of cold weather sports then the Northwest region of Wisconsin. The Northwoods (comprised of Langdale, Lincoln, Forest, Vilas, and Oneida counties) and the towns of Cable and Hayward, among others in the region, make for an interconnected outdoor winter playground.

It is easy to rent equipment from local outfitters and enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. There are more than 200 miles of cross-country skiing trails and 80 miles of fat-tire biking trails just in the Hayward/Cable region. There are more than 600 miles of snowmobile trails in the area and hundreds of miles more that connect the many small towns in the Northwoods.

You could make a full vacation just traveling from town to town by snowmobile and staying in a different area each night. What makes the northwest region spectacular for outdoor winter sports it that there are trails for every skill level, and it is easy to find guides, equipment, and instruction.

Trails are always maintained in the winter. The town of Hayward has the largest fleet of snow- and trail-grooming equipment in the United States.

Cheesehead Factory

Wisconsin is synonymous with cheese, and Wisconsin sports fans are synonymous with the famous Cheesehead. The term is a nickname referring to fans of the Green Bay Packers NFL team, and it has developed its own cult following. Cheeseheads are easily identified by the oversized foam cheese slice that is worn as a hat.

You do not have to be a Cheesehead to enjoy a visit to the original Cheesehead Factory in Milwaukee. The factory and store are located inside a warehouse and have everything related to the Cheesehead brand, along with history about its humble beginnings.

The Cheesehead store features products like ornaments and foam cheese earrings, as well as clothing bearing the brand's name. You can even take your own foam cheese hat or head to a Packer's game and feel like a local.

The House on the Rock

The curious House on the Rock is one of Wisconsin's most unusual tourist attractions. Set high atop Deer Shelter Rock in Spring Green, it's a fascinating mix of oddities and antiques housed in a sprawling complex of structures built to mimic the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose famous Taliesin East home is nearby.

A highlight of a visit is the 218-foot-long Infinity Room, which seems to disappear into the distance when you stand in it. This fun attraction is also part of a larger complex that includes a resort and an inn.

If you’re looking for the best attractions in Wisconsin, then you’ve come to the right place!

I was born and raised in Ohio, and I spent a lot of time finding the best things to do there.

So I also know that the Midwest is a part of the country that often gets overlooked.

Wisconsin is probably best known for its beer, cheese, and Native American culture. But that’s not all there is to Wisconsin attractions.

On this list, I’ve included some things to do in Wisconsin that are super popular tourist attractions in WI, but for a good reason.

These are the Wisconsin destinations you don’t want to miss and they all deserve a spot on your Midwest travel bucket list.

So, let’s take a look at the 10 best attractions in Wisconsin that you won’t want to miss!

10 Best Attractions In Wisconsin For Your Bucket List

A trip to the wisconsin dells is a must-see wisconsin destination.

One of the most popular Wisconsin destinations is the Wisconsin Dells. The Wisconsin Dells is an area in the state that is known for its watersports fun.

In fact, the Wisconsin Dells is the ‘Waterpark Capital of the World’. I’m not kidding!

There are tons and tons of waterparks in the Wisconsin Dells, more than anywhere else in the world. So it’s easily one of the best things to do in Wisconsin for families.

But if waterparks aren’t your thing, don’t worry. This Wisconsin tourist attraction is also full of natural water features and destinations.

You can go kayaking in Devil’s Lake State Park, one of the best state parks in Wisconsin , to see the famous Witches Gulch – or you can hike there.

Spring Green And The Taliesin Preservation

For fans of the renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Spring Green, and the Taliesin Preservation is a must-see Wisconsin tourist attraction.

Spring Green is the hometown of Frank Lloyd Wright and is full of his iconic designs. That’s because there are several buildings in the town that were designed by him, often early in his career.

In the early 1900’s, Wright built is personal home, Taliesin , just outside of the charming small town in Wisconsin .

Wright’s personal home, Taliesin is now a house museum and preservation that you can tour.

You’ll learn about Wright’s iconic style, his influences, and his lasting impact on American architecture – especially in the Midwest.

Keep in mind that is a popular place to visit in Wisconsin, so I suggest booking your tour tickets ahead of time!

Door County Is One Of The Most Romantic Places To Visit In Wisconsin

Door County Wisconsin is perfect for a romantic weekend getaway in the Midwest !

For couples that love food, wine, and nature, this is easily one of the best things to do in Wisconsin for adults. But it’s still family-friendly if you’re looking for a family trip.

But Door County is definitely known as the go-to Wisconsin travel destination for lovers.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Door County, you’ll enjoy yourself.

Winter in Door County is my favorite time to visit. It’s the ultimate cozy and romantic getaway!

You can look for the Northern Lights, go snowshoeing across the beautiful snow-covered landscape, and cozy up by the fire after a day spent exploring.

But any season is beautiful in Door County, so I recommended it to everyone as one of the best Wisconsin destinations.

The Harley Davidson Museum Is A Top Attraction In Wisconsin

One of the top attractions in Milwaukee Wisconsin is the Harley Davidson Museum .

Harley Davidson is an iconic American motorcycle brand that has its own ‘cult’ following. This is partially due to the brand’s huge impact on American motorcycle culture.

Inside the museum, you’ll see a number of truly unique exhibits. They have motorcycles dating all the way back to 1903, when the brand first started.

You’ll also see bikes owned by iconic Americans, you can virtually build your own Harley, and there’s even a fun ‘Imagination Station’ for kids to explore.

The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and has a café as well as two stores that sell merch you can’t find anywhere else.

If you’re looking for one of the most unique things to do in Milwaukee , look no further!

Stroll Through The Olbrich Botanical Gardens

One of my favorite things to do in Madison Wisconsin is a stroll through the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

This beautiful attraction in Madison WI opened in 1952. No matter what time of year you visit, you’re sure to see some beautiful blooms.

The Rose Garden and the Bolz Observatory are two of the main highlights of the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

One of the more unique things to do in Wisconsin is a visit to the Sala, while in the gardens. The Sala is a beautiful Thai-styled pavilion that was actually a gift from the Thai government.

If you’re looking for fun places to visit in Wisconsin year-round, then head to the Olbrich Botanical Gardens!

Explore The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore In The Fall

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore consists of 22 islands on the northern tip of Wisconsin. They are some of the most beautiful islands in the Great Lakes and are definitely worth a visit.

I really enjoy exploring this stunning attraction in Wisconsin during the fall months.

That’s because the shoreline is full of brightly colored trees that are so striking against the blue water of Lake Superior.

Although not technically part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, I suggest visiting the largest island, Madeline Island as well.

Because it is the biggest of the Apostle Islands, it is full of popular Wisconsin tourist attractions.

The other islands may be smaller, but they are still full of beautiful hiking trails, areas where you can go kayaking and boating, and so much more. Fall in Wisconsin is so beautiful!

See The Stars At The Yerkes Observatory

At the University of Chicago in Williams Bay, WI, you’ll find the Yerkes Observatory.

The Yerkes Observatory was founded in 1897 by the university’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. It is considered the birthplace of the study of astrophysics.

Along with that history, famous astronomers and astrophysicists have spent considerable amounts of time using the observatory and its labs.

They have led to research the and discovery of some of the biggest breakthroughs in modern astronomy and astrophysics.

Those names include George Ellery Hale, Edwin Hubble, Nancy Grace Roman, Carl Sagan, and Mary Ross Calvert. During his first visit to the United States in 1921, Albert Einstein was even a visitor to the conservatory.

Today you can tour the stunning architectural and engineering masterpiece that is the observatory.

You’ll learn all about its amazing impact on the science of space as we know it, get up close and personal with the massive telescope, and so much more.

Go Whitewater Rafting On The Menominee River

If you’re wondering what to do in Wisconsin in the late summer, consider going whitewater rafting on the Menominee River!

The Wildman Adventure Resort offers some of the best whitewater rafting trips on the Menominee River. You can even stay on the Menominee River in one of their adventure cabins.

Whitewater rafting on the Menominee River is definitely for the thrill seekers, as the rapids are classified as class III and IV rapids.

These are some of the most ‘dangerous’ rapids to whitewater raft on. So keep that in mind when you plan to head out onto the river.

Because of their classification all of the whitewater rafting boats come with an expert guide, plenty of safety gear, and a full safety brief before you head out.

If that doesn’t scare you away, you’ll have so much fun racing down the river on a warm late summer day!

Stay Here: wildmanranch.com

Cave Of The Mounds Is One Of The Coolest Attractions in Wisconsin

The Cave of the Mounds is a National Natural Landmark that is easily one of the coolest Wisconsin attractions.

Miles beneath the ground is a massive limestone cave system, and since 1940 they’ve been open to the public for tours.

In that time, it’s become one of the most popular Wisconsin tourist attractions.

The cave is just 25 miles west of Madison, which makes it really easy to get to, especially if you’re staying in Madison.

It is a really unique thing to do in Wisconsin with children, especially if they are interested in rocks and minerals – like so many kids are!

You’ll learn all about the history of the cave, what makes it so special and so unique, and they even have a spot for gemstone mining.

A view in the cave of the mounds one of the top attractions in Wisconsin

Relaxing Lake Geneva Is One Of The Best Wisconsin Destinations

If you’re looking for a relaxing place to visit in WI, I highly suggest a trip to Lake Geneva.

Lake Geneva is nicknamed ‘Newport of the West’ since it was once the playground of the rich and famous.

It’s a Wisconsin destination that is still full of charm, and it’s perfect for embracing a slower pace of life for a bit. Plus, there are so many things to do in Lake Geneva !

As you explore the area, you’ll find the beautiful namesake lake with its beautiful beaches.

But in town, you’ll find beautiful old mansions, charming and cozy bed and breakfasts, and plenty of unique shops and incredible Lake Geneva restaurants .

The Lake Geneva Shore Path is probably the best way to see all the sights and sounds of this charming town.

Lake Geneva is a particularly popular thing to do in Wisconsin for couples since it’s known for it’s charming and romantic atmosphere.

Packing List When Visiting Wisconsin Attractions

If you will be traveling, either by plane or by car to Wisconsin, here are some of my best tips on how to pack lightly.

This  unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID sleeves are the perfect solution.

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

The replaceable carbon filter ensures clean drinking water when you want it.

Then this collapsible silicone foldable water bottle  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc…. No matter the time of day or evening.

This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

There are so many incredible Wisconsin attractions to explore, year-round!

I truly believe there is no ‘bad’ time to travel to Wisconsin and explore everything this beautiful Midwest state has to offer.

With something for everyone, and every interest, there’s no end of things to see in Wisconsin.

Did your favorite Wisconsin attraction make it on my list? I’d love to hear about your personal favorites in the comments!
