Culture and customs.

Turkey has a strong national identity and both its location and the legacy of the Ottoman Empire have contributed to a cultural mix of influences from  Europe ,  Asia  and the  Middle East . Cultural practices vary significantly depending on which region of Turkey you are travelling in. It's important to remember that while most Turkish cities are modern metropolises, Turks can still be quite traditional.

Travelers will find Turkish people to be polite and quite formal in their greetings, kind and hospitable as hosts and friendly as new acquaintances. While bars and nightclubs are common in big cities like Istanbul, outside of these environments it’s a good idea to take your cues from the locals and behave in a subdued manner. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, but raucous behavior should be contained to the appropriate venues and kept off the street.

While Turkey is nominally secular, the vast majority of the population identifies as Muslim and Islamic holidays like Ramazan (Ramadan) and Eid are widely observed and recognized as public holidays.

How to be a respectful traveler in Turkey

  • Clean your plate If you’re eating with locals (particularly as a guest in their home), you’ll make them very happy if you eat multiple servings and finish everything on your plate. Plan ahead and arrive on an empty stomach for extra points.
  • Know when to haggle Remember the first rule of bartering is to decide how much you’re willing to spend beforehand and use that as your guide. In regular shops – as opposed to markets – don’t attempt to haggle over prices.
  • Respect the elderly Small gestures like letting elderly folks go ahead of you through doors, offering them your seat on public transport and generally being considerate and respectful of older people will be greatly appreciated.
  • Keep criticism private It’s a good rule of thumb not to criticize the culture, government or politics of Turkey. While not all Turks are strict nationalists, you could cause a lot of trouble and offense. You should especially avoid discussing topics related to the Kurdish or Armenian people. When in doubt, follow the conversational lead of the locals. If you’re traveling with Intrepid, ask your leader for guidance. If you’re after a little insight into the geopolitical complexities of Turkey, check out the 'further reading' list below for some perspectives from Turkish authors.

History and government

Ancient history.

There is evidence of hominin habitation in the region known as Anatolia, or Asian Turkey, that dates as far back as 500,000 years and ample evidence of numerous Neolithic settlements popping up between 8000 and 10,000 years ago.

Notable civilizations who occupied the prehistoric Anatolian region were the Hattians (circa 2500 BC to 2000 BC), the Hittites (circa 1700 BC to 1200 BC) and the Assyrians. From around 2000 BC, Greeks began settling in north-western Anatolia and the southern coasts, establishing individual city-states.

Pre-modern history

The majority of Anatolia was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. After his death, a succession of various Greek-Macedonian rulers controlled the area until 133 BC when the region was given to the Roman Republic.

Roman control had little impact on the dominant classical Greek culture, which continued to thrive in Anatolia until the region’s absorption into the Byzantine Empire.

Between the sixth and 11th centuries a massive wave of what is known as the ‘Turkic migration’ occurred, and millions traveled across Central Asia into Europe and the Middle East . Among this migratory wave were various Turkic tribes who brought the Islamic religion and Turkic languages that dominate modern Turkey.

The Byzantine Empire sustained a number of invasions and limped forward before finally collapsing in the 14th century, by which point much of Anatolia was already controlled by tribal micro-kingdoms. One of these Turkic tribal groups, the Ottomans, emerged as the dominant regional power during the 15th century and enjoyed a few hundred years of expansion and growth until territorial losses forced its eventual decline in the 19th century.

20th century

The final dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after defeat at the hands of the Allies in WWI was followed by a brief period of Allied occupation before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became the republic’s first president and introduced radical reforms to modernize Turkey and imbue it with a unique identity that was separate from that of the former empire. His ideas continue to be influential in contemporary politics today.

In the decades since the death of Ataturk in 1938, Turkey has seen a number of swings between democratic and autocratic governance, interrupted by brief periods of military governance and occasional political chaos.

Turkey today is a presidential republic where the ruling political parties have historically been nationalist and somewhat economically liberal, with a varying amount of Islamic influence.

Far-left political activist groups and minority rebel groups have waxed and waned in terms of public and political influence. The most notable is the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a militant political group originally formed with the intention of creating a Kurdish separatist state. The arrest of PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan in 1999 was a crushing blow to the once-powerful group, though they continue to operate with the stated aim of ensuring the rights and autonomy of the Kurdish people in Turkey and beyond.

More recently, Turkey has experienced relative prosperity and political stability, though the economy – based on mineral mining, agriculture, tourism and construction – continues to fluctuate between growth and stasis.

Eating and drinking

Home to some of the tastiest produce you can get your hands on, traditional cooking methods and influence from Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Turkey’s food is surprising, delicious and delightful (pun definitely intended).

Plant-based options

Many Turkish favorites are already non-meat. Gozleme, simit and cig kofte are all vegetarian and easy to find in markets, street corner food stands and restaurants. Vegans will have a trickier time finding pre-made dishes that contain no animal products. However, Turkey has an abundance of markets selling fresh produce, bread and extras like hummus and fava bean dip. With a little planning, vegans will be able to assemble meze-style lunches when pre-made options aren’t available.

In dishes like soups and stews it’s a good idea to watch out for beef stock – called et suyu – as it is used frequently even in ‘vegetarian’ dishes.

Must-try Turkish dishes and beverages

  • Gozleme This spinach and cheese pastry is a tasty budget-friendly bite that will satisfy everyone (especially vegetarians).
  • Lokum Love it or hate it, this divisive treat (known internationally as Turkish delight) can be found in shops, bazaars and street stalls nearly everywhere in Turkey. Made from rosewater, lemon, sugar, cornflour and water, it's relatively easy to make… and even easier to eat.
  • Simit As far as quick and easy snacks go it’s hard to pass up simit, a bread similar to a sesame-encrusted bagel. Carts selling simit can be found at bus and train stations, main streets and other busy thoroughfares in most cities.
  • Cig kofte Made with bulgur, onion, tomato paste and spices, this south-eastern specialty is essentially a big ol’ vegetarian ‘meatball’. The traditional kind (made with raw meat) is now banned, so you can eat without fear of food poisoning.
  • Fish sandwiches Particularly if you’re spending time in the Bosphorus, a fish sandwich (or balik ekmek) is a must-try local dish. Made with white fish, onion and salad, it’s a simple classic that hits the spot.
  • Manti Though the ingredients that fill these handmade dumplings vary, the best kind are filled with lamb and served with yogurt and butter. It’s hard to move after polishing off a plate, but so worth it.
  • Turkish coffee Turkish coffee is known around the world for its unique brewing method. It's made with arabica beans which are ground into a fine powder and boiled with cardamom and water in a cevze – a pretty copper or brass pot with a long, thin handle.

Geography and environment

A fairly mountainous country sharing borders with Bulgaria , Greece , Syria, Iraq, Iran , Armenia , Georgia and Azerbaijan , Turkey also has wide stretches of coastline along the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Blessed with large tracts of fertile soil, Turkey is one of the world's biggest agricultural producers, and visitors can expect to see many farms, orchards, plantations and areas of permanent crops occupying certain regions.

Due to its location, Turkey is home to a wide variety of landscapes, from the rocky, forested coastline of the Black Sea region to the fertile plateaus of the Marmara, the white sand beaches of the Aegean and the limestone formations of the Mediterranean. Adding further environmental diversity, the Anatolia highlands (considered the heartland of the country) feature rugged snow-capped peaks and crystalline lakes.

With one of the biggest bazaars in the world, flea markets aplenty and a cutting-edge contemporary fashion scene in the bigger cities, shopping in Turkey is more diverse than you might think.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country, particularly perishable items. Australia and New Zealand, for example, generally have strict quarantine laws.

A note on ceramics

While beautifully decorated tiles and ceramics overflow from Turkey’s market stalls, you should keep in mind that their point of origin can be hard to decipher. In other words, watch out for fakes. The real deal tends to be pretty expensive (but worth it, if you ask us). Of course, if you’re just after something pretty to remind you of your travels, don’t feel too bad about reaching for the inexpensive option.

Things to buy in Turkey

  • Handwoven carpets Turkish carpets are a worldwide phenomenon and represent centuries of artistic tradition woven into a beautiful work of art. Go in with an idea of how much you’re willing to pay and don’t be afraid to bargain a little. Just keep in mind that quality craftsmanship deserves to be rewarded with a fair price. A lot of vendors and stores will give you the carpet in a bag suitable to transport as luggage, or you might consider shipping it back home.
  • Nazar boncuk (evil eye talisman) Want to bring home a little piece of Turkey and ward off evil spirits and intentions at the same time? An evil eye talisman is a perfect thing. You’ll see these little blue ‘eyes’ in every shop and the majority of Turks carry one with them wherever they go.
  • Jewelry Turkey's artisan-made gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are good buys. Bazaars, boutiques, museum gift shops and silversmiths offer a wide range of designs from modern to Ottoman-inspired.
  • Brass and copper You can find an assortment of brass and copper decorative objects for the home in the bazaars of Turkey. Serving platters, pitchers, trays, pots and urns will add some souvenir flair to your kitchen.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular events.

Whether or not you want to travel during Ramazan (Ramadan) will depend on what kind of adventure you’re after. If you love immersing yourself in local culture and religious practices (and don’t mind a little inconvenience) you might just find traveling during this holy month a fascinating and enriching experience. While the days are dedicated to fasting and contemplation, the evenings are full of colorful celebration and, of course, feasting! Plus, there are fewer tourists around to compete with.

Anniversary of the Anzac campaign

Thousands of people head to Gallipoli every year to pay their respects to fallen Australian , New Zealand and Turkish soldiers who died during the bloody Gallipoli campaign of WWI. The moving dawn ceremony is an iconic event that grows in popularity each year, so if you're hoping to head to Gallipoli in April for Anzac Day, plan ahead.

Efes Pilsen One Love Festival

This annual summer music festival held in Istanbul presents two days of rock, pop, folk and electronic entertainment for masses of locals and visitors keen on soaking up some tunes and summer love.

Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championships

Want to see thousands of oiled-up men wrestle and grapple with each other? Then this is the festival for you! This wrestling championship is held over several days, usually in late June, when Turkey's national sport is celebrated with gusto and fanfare. Apart from the one-on-one wrestling bouts, there’s Romani bands, traditional food and belly dancers providing the perfect sideshow attractions.

Cappadox Festival

Set in the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia, this eco-friendly music festival features artists and musicians performing on solar-powered stages and inside the ancient caves that the region is famous for. Held around June, the festival was originally an annual event but has moved to a biennial timetable.

Turkey travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Turkey?

You may need a visa to enter Turkey depending on where you’re from. Foreign nationals from several countries will need an e-visa that allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including:

  • South Africa

Travelers from many countries – including  New Zealand , the  United Kingdom , Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,  Japan , Norway, Sweden and  Switzerland  – don’t require a visa for stays of less than three months if the trip is for tourism or business purposes.

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

The best time to visit Turkey is typically during the shoulder seasons of March to May or September to October when the temperatures are still warm and there aren't yet large summer crowds.

For the best beach weather, the hottest time of year is June and July, however, this collides with the summer holidays, so it will be busy.

The cooler months are quieter and accommodation (when still open) is cheaper.

If you are planning to travel to the eastern reaches of Turkey during Ramadan/Ramazan, it’s important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours. However, the carnival atmosphere that erupts when the fast breaks in the evening is magical, so travelers who enjoy immersive cultural experiences might prefer to travel during the holy month.

What's the weather like in Turkey?

The weather in Turkey depends on the time of year and region you're visiting. The southern coastlines typically experience a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and wet winters, while the interior regions can experience drastic temperature changes and even snow.

If you're planning on swimming, the water is generally still warm up until the start of November and October is great as it's much quieter.

Weather in Istanbul is fairly temperate, sheltered from severe weather by its proximity to the coastlines.

Is tipping customary in Turkey?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Turkey, a cash tip that equals a small percentage of the total bill is very much appreciated in restaurants.

It's also customary to tip staff while visiting hammams (bathhouses). It's not necessary to tip taxi drivers, although rounding up the fare for convenience is commonplace.

What is the internet access like in Turkey?

Free wi-fi is common in Turkey’s cities, but the quality of connection varies. Alternatively, Turkey has an abundance of internet cafes in large cities, and most of them serve coffee and snacks so you can refuel while you catch up with folks back home.

Internet access can be spotty or non-existent in rural areas, so it’s best to treat travel in these regions as an opportunity for a digital detox.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Turkey?

Mobile phone coverage is good in Turkey, especially in large cities. Coverage may not be available in more remote areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile.

What are the toilets like in Turkey?

Turkey has a mix of Western-style and squat-style toilets, sometimes with a jug of water for manual flushing. The latter becomes more common the more remote the region, however, there's typically a Western-style toilet in every bathroom.

Toilets are known as WCs (short for water closets) in Turkey.

Many public toilets require a small payment of roughly 2-10 TRY for use, so make sure you carry change when out and about.

You may find the standards of hygiene and sanitation in Turkey are laxer than you are used to so it's a good idea to carry toilet paper and hand sanitiser if you are concerned.

What will it cost for a…?

Turkey's unit of currency is the lira (TRY). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Half-litre of beer = 50-60 TRY
  • Simit (local bread roll) = 10 TRY
  • Casual restaurant meal = 300 TRY
  • Mid-range restaurant meal = 600 TRY
  • Basic hammam visit = 1000 + TRY/50 EURO

Can I drink the water in Turkey?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Turkey. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water or carry water purification tablets with you. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Turkey?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist shopping areas and large hotels in Turkey, but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors, in remote towns and rural areas. We recommend carrying cash for purchases to avoid being caught out.

What is ATM access like in Turkey?

ATMs are available in large cities in Turkey but are not common in rural areas and smaller towns. Be prepared for this by having enough cash before traveling out of the city.

What to wear in Turkey

Turkey can get quite warm in summer and during the shoulder seasons but it’s important to remember that clothing that covers you from elbows to below the knee is appropriate in (or even around) mosques. Think linen pants, lightweight tops/shirts and long dresses. Female travelers should also carry a scarf on them to wear when visiting mosques.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What public holidays are celebrated in Turkey?

  • 1 January New Year's Day
  • 23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Day
  • 1 May Labour Day
  • 19 May Youth & Sports Day
  • 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day
  • 30 August Victory Day

The 30-day Islamic holy month of Ramazan (Ramadan) is widely observed in Turkey. The exact dates change every year, so it’s important you check when Ramazan will take place in the year you plan to travel. As a general rule, there are five consecutive public holidays observed at the beginning of the month and a few observed at the end.

The level of celebration varies considerably depending on what part of Turkey you are in. The east has a larger Muslim population and therefore a more devoutly observed Ramazan, whereas the southern and western coasts will be less affected.

Kurban (Eid al-Adha)

A four to five-day public holiday is observed during Kurban (Eid al-Adha), though like Ramazan the exact dates of this observation change every year.

Is Turkey safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers should be aware that while Turkey is nominally secular it can also be very conservative. As such, negative attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals are common, particularly outside major cities.

While same-sex relationships and non-normative gender presentation are not against the law in Turkey, LGBTQIA+ people have no legally enshrined protection from discrimination. Legal prohibitions against ‘ offenses against public morality’ can and have been used to persecute LGBTQIA+ folks, though the likelihood of this being used to target travelers is low.

Transgender travelers, in particular, should be aware that trans people in Turkey report being the targets of violence and overt discrimination.

Istanbul and Ankara have established queer scenes, both of which are primarily oriented around cisgender gay men and to a lesser extent cisgender gay women. However, same-sex couples are still unlikely to engage in public displays of affection in these cities.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Turkey accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

While infrastructure is improving, much of Turkey remains difficult to navigate for wheelchair users and people with mobility concerns. Many cities in Turkey have been occupied for thousands of years and their design reflects that, with little regard given to making streets and attractions accessible. Travelers with impaired mobility will find that while tourist locales in Istanbul, such as hotels and mosques, are fitted with ramps and connected by an accessible tram, getting around the rest of the city can be challenging. Rural regions like Cappadocia will be difficult for travelers with mobility impairment to navigate independently.

Squat toilets remain the norm in many parts of Turkey, which can pose problems for travelers with certain disabilities.

Traffic in Turkey can be chaotic, and even when traffic lights and pedestrian crossings exist drivers do not always obey them. Taxis are, for the most part, not wheelchair-friendly.

Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should consider bringing a stash of extra batteries, as they can be difficult to locate in Turkey.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Highlight of 20 days Turkey Itinerary

Updated: Feb 27, 2021

' Turkey is an European country, an Asian country, a Middle Eastern country, Balkan country, Caucasian country, neighbour to Africa, Black Sea country, Caspian Sea, all these - Ahmet Davutoglu'.

20 days turkey tour

In order to escape cold weather that started to hit Central Asia, I started to search for a cheap gateway flight ticket to the next country that offers visa-free access to Malaysian passport holder. After a quick search, I booked a cheap Turkish Airlines flight from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to Istanbul. And this is the beginning of my stay in the country where East meets West .

As previous countries, I decided on route seldom travelled by mass-tourism. Last minutes planning and by local recommendation, this is how my 20 days itinerary look like.

20 days turkey tour

This route starts and end in Istanbul and it offers a variety of sights and scenery from some of the best that Turkey have to offers. From the modern city of Istanbul to the ancient sunken city of Kekova, hope you will be able to experience the wonders that I had experience. Turkey had never stop amazed me.

As Turkey is a large country stranded in between Europe and Asia, I would recommend travelling in Turkey for at least 2 weeks in order to fully experience all that Turkey had to offer at a comfortable pace. The journey will start mostly in Istanbul as most international flight will land in either Istanbul or Ankara. However, I would recommend to start it in Istanbul as Istanbul itself is amazing city which span 2 continents. And of course, the flight ticket to Istanbul is cheaper as well 😁

For this itinerary, you can adjust the length of the stay in each cities depending on your travel preferences. It will start in Istanbul in the north to Goreme in the east and all the way south to Antalya. From Antalya, it will involve driving through coastal highway (which in my opinion is the most beautiful road trip in whole Turkey) before ending it in Istanbul to catch your flight to your next adventure.

Summary - Istanbul (4 days) -> Gerome (4 days) -> Konya (1 day) -> Antalya (2 days) -> Chimaera (1 day) -> Kekova (2 days) -> Pamukkale (1 day) -> Sulcuk (2 days) -> Sirince (1 day) -> Istanbul (2 days)

Travelling make easy in Turkey as most local can speak English and are friendly enough to offer their help except in Istanbul which has a few rotten apples in term of tourist scammer (which I would explain more below).

Day 1-4 Istanbul

Once you touch down at Istanbul airport, make your way to the city centre by using the airport bus. You can also put Istanbul as your last stop if you manage to catch a cheap connecting flight to Nevsehir or Kayseri for the next destination (Gerome).

20 days turkey tour

The best area to stay in Istanbul is on the European side of the city. I would recommend staying at either Sultanahmet Square or Taksim square as both areas are close to major tourist spots and an excellent transport hub.

Start your journey in Istanbul by spending at least a day in Sultanahmet area to visit the majestic Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace Museum, the Blue Mosque and Basilica Cistern. If you intern to visit other parts of Turkey as per this iterinary, consider purchase the Museum Pass which is valid for 15 days for visit to government-managed museum.

My favourite place is Hagia Sophia. It was once of the most impressive and important buildings ever constructed in Turkey. People even call it the 8th wonder of the world. Currently, it was known as Hagia Sophia Holy Grand Mosque. Formerly it was the Church of Hagia Sophia. Hence when you walk into it, you can experience the mixture of architecture of 2 of world largest religions. Here you may see a drawing of Christianity next to Islamic symbol.

Once you completed your tour, walk across the square to visit the Blue Mosque. Take a short break during the prayer recital to listen to the ' Battle of Prayer ' between Hagia Sophia mosque and the Blue Mosque.

20 days turkey tour

Near to Sultanahmet Square, try to look for the entrance to an ancient cistern (artificial reservoir) Basilica Cistern. 52 stone steps are all you need to enter this fantastic architecture. It was built in the 6th century. Ambient lighting and cold air will soak your skin upon stepping down the stair. Here, you will be surrounded by 336 marbles columns that give you fantastic Instagram photo.

While you are there, try to search for Tear Column and Medusa Column and you will be surprised.

Spend the next few days in Istanbul by taking a stroll at Istiklal Street which is the most popular avenue in Istanbul. You may start your stroll from Taksim Square in the north and finished it off with a sunset view from Gelata Tower (south). Plan your timing well if you want to experience the sunset from the top of Gelata Tower as the queue to enter the tower just before the sunset will be long.

Complete your visit by indulging in local cuisine at the Spice Bazaar.

Day 5-8 Gerome

The next destination will be Jewel of Turkey, Cappacodia. I had always been fascinated by the sight of countless hot air balloon across a landscape that looks like it was from another planet. However, Cappacodia is more than just hot air balloon ride.

There are a few small towns where you can catch the hot air balloon but a stay at Gerome will be ideal as basic amenity is there (including a Hamman bathhouse). Check the weather forecast before planning your trip to Gerome if you wish to take the hot air balloon as hot air balloon ride was very dependence on the weather condition. Spend your first day with hot air balloon ride and strolling around this lovely small town.

20 days turkey tour

Visitor to Gerome have the option of 2 route; the Red tour (North) and Green Tour (South). If you are base on Gerome, you can do the Red tour DIY style.

Red Tour: Start your day in the early morning with the view of rising hot air balloon at Sunrise point (use Maps.me for direction). Here, you can see the rock formation of Love Valley under the brimming sunlight. After enjoying the sunrise, walk to the town of Uchisar to visit the magnificent Uchisar Castle. Other interesting points to explore including Gerome Open Air Museum, Love Valley and Fairy Chimney.

20 days turkey tour

Fun Facts: Pigeon house's name came from numerous man-made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that had been carved into volcanic tuff. In ancient Turkey, pigeons had been used in this region as message carrier and their dropping had been used as fertilizer. With the advancement in today morning, the usage of messenger pigeon had been phased out. However, their legacy remains in the form of these amazing Pigeon houses.

20 days turkey tour

Up next is the Green tour on day 3. On Green tour, you will visit Derinkuyu Underground City and Ilhara Valley. There is about 36 underground cities in Cappacodia with Derinkuyu Underground City being the deepest with 600 plus outside doors and with the deep of 85m. You will find various room with interesting features such as stables (yes, ancient Cappacodian raise livestock under the ground), cellars, storage rooms, schools and churches. Locals build it as a temporary shelter from frequent raids by invading armies.

Next up is Ilhara Valley. This 14km gorge was the settlement of Christians escaping prosecution by Roman soldiers. Here, you may enjoy serene gorge with many ancient churches.

20 days turkey tour

It is quite a distance if you drive from Istanbul to Gerome. As a budget tight traveller, I opt to travel by overnight bus to Gerome. This way, I can save on my travel expenses and at the same time, save on 1-night accommodation. And believe me, long-distance bus in Turkey is the best I had throughout my journey (imagine being served with drink by a bus attendance. Yes, you hear me right. Buses in Turkey have onboard attendance just like in any flight to serve your need and drink). While there, why not staying in one of the numerous cave hotel/hostels, right?

20 days turkey tour

Day 9 Konya

20 days turkey tour

Inspired by photos I saw online about a group of men in white robe dancing and swirling, I made my way to the city of Konya from Gerome. But upon reaching here, I was wrong. It was not a dance, instead, it was a religious praying ritual.

The ceremony runs for several hours and divided into 7 parts. I visited Mevlana Cultural Center to witness this surprising calm ceremony. However, the information on the schedule and purchasing of the ticket cannot be done online. Hence, I decided to try my luck there.

Once at the cultural center, I proceed to the receptionist and apparently, the ticket had to be booked in advance through a specific website. Seeing my disappointed face, the nice gentlemen proceed to offer me a free ticket. Yeah...

This ritual had become an unseparated identity of Turkey. Here at Mevlana Cultural Center, you will be treated to the captivating sight of Turkish Dervishes hypnotically spinning accompanied by the chant of prayer. It can also be view at Istanbul, but why don't visited it in its birthplace itself, right?

Day 10-11 Antalya

Antalya is famous as a tourist destination for many local Turkish. Beautiful beaches and majestic ruin of Aspendos are a must include in the itinerary's checklist.

Start your stay in Antalya by visiting Karaalioglu Park, Hidirlik Tower and Hadrian Castle Gate. All these three attractions are located in the city itself.

20 days turkey tour

Alexander the Great. I believe most peoples had been heard of this name before. And here, in Antalya, you can visit one of the best-preserved legacy of the Roman Empire under the command of Alexander the Great; Ancient Theatre of Aspendos.

20 days turkey tour

Work hard, party harder. I believe this is also the motto of the ancient Roman. To entertain themselves, ancient Roman-built numerous theatre across the empire and Aspendos is the among the best preserved. Sitting on the stone seat alone, I closed my eye and imagine how many great musician and performers had graced this theatre during the height of the Roman empire. How beautiful it would be.

20 days turkey tour

Day 12 Playing with Fire @ Mt Olympos

Had you ever visited a mountain that had been burning for centuries just Fire Mountain in Dragon Ball animation? Yes, you can find it at Yanartas (Burning Rock in Turkish) in Southern Turkey. According to the myth, a mythical hero by the name of Bellerophon had killed the Chimaera; a monstrous fire breathing hybrid creature in ancient Greek culture.

20 days turkey tour

Today, visitors can visit this mountain where cluster of small natural flames blazing. You can try to extinguish it, but it will come back alive after a while. While at there, pay a visit to 2 local guardian cats there. Yes, there are 2 cats lovely cats that call this mountain home. There are 2 flaming points in the mountain. The best time to visit it is after sunset where the flame is more visible. The hike to first flaming point takes about 40 minutes with mild difficulties. This is where you can find the two cat. It would be a good idea to bring some marshmallow to be grilled here.

20 days turkey tour

Hike to the second flaming point will take another 30 minutes. However, the difficulties level is higher and I would not recommend it to hiker without torchlight and poor physical. Unlike flaming point 1 which have bigger flame, the flame at this point is smaller but it was blue in color. Again, use Maps.me to guide you to these 2 points.

As there is no accommodation nearby, please book your stay at Cirali instead.

If you are history buff, you can visit another ancient Roman ruin by the beach; the Olympos ruin.

Day 13-14 Sunken City of Kekova

20 days turkey tour

As you drive from Cirali toward Kas, you will pass by a small town called Myra (Kali). Have a quick stop here to visit the rock-cut tomb and another ancient Roman theatre. Myra is one of four cities in ancient Roman which hold the title of metropolis city. It is also believed to be the origin of Santa Claus because this is where St Nicholas developed his teaching and spread his fame during his life time.

Complete your quick stop here by visiting the Santa Claus Museum.

Next, proceed to the nearby ancient port city of Andriake. Visit both the open air and enclose museum here to learn more about how Roman build their wealth via trading and taxation.

Surrounded by turquoise sea, the next sleeping town of Kas is a seaside town overlooking the Sunken City of Kekova. Kekova was once a flourishing city which is now completely underwater.

20 days turkey tour

No swimming was allowed around the sunken city. To reach here, you must rent a boat from the local. The local boatman will bring you to various point of interest apart from the sunken city. Part of the boat tour normally will include a visit to the floating stone sarcophagus and Kalekoy village to visit it historical fortress.

20 days turkey tour

Day 15 Pamukkale

20 days turkey tour

Cotton Castle of Turkey needs no introduction. Doubted as among the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world, it was formed when spring water with high content of calcium bicarbonate flow over the edge of mountain terraces, cooled down and crystallized leaving behind a solid white-colored Calcium deposit. But warn you, as famous as it is, it comes with huge crowd.

20 days turkey tour

Day 16-17 Sulcuk

20 days turkey tour

Make Sulcuk your base to explore another world-famous Library of Ephesus. You can easily spend a day at Ephesus. Unlike other ancient remains on this itinerary, Ephesus is where you can experience the remain of the whole ancient Roman town. In Ephesus, you must visit its ancient library, walk through the market and strolling around the town square with its ancient Roman pillar. The town is so huge and you can expect to spend a whole day here.

20 days turkey tour

If you have extra budget to spare, I would recommend you to visit the Terrace House of Ephesus (additional ticket required). Also known as 'Houses of the Rich', you can imagine life as rich peoples in Ancient Roman. Here, ancient Roman's technologies such as the heating system for the bath can be seem. Wow, imagine... hot water shower in ancient Roman? Unbelievable.

Apart from Ephesus, Selcuk is home to many other wonderful attractions such as Ephesus Museum, Basilica of St John, Temple of the Artemis (Seven Wonders of Ancient World), Meryemana, Ayasuluk Fortress, Roman Aqueduct and Grotto of the Seven Sleepers.

Day 18 Sirince

Approaching the end of the travel in Turkey, spend a night at the little village of Sirince. Wonderful food, lush greenery and no car are allowed in the town. It means, you can wander by foot around the narrow cobbled streets. Enjoy the bazaar here and remember to try the famed Turkish ice cream show and Turkish coffee.

20 days turkey tour

The brewing of Turkish Coffee. Since I am allergic to coffee, the model in the video will be my travel companion from China 😁

As I am camera shy person, again, the model in the video is him again. Haha.

Day 19-20 Istanbul

You can spend the final 2 days in Turkey was spend in Istanbul for some last minutes sightseeing and souvenir hunting. 😊

TRAVELLING HACK IN TURKEY

1. transportation.

The best and cheapest travelling method to and from Istanbul two airport is using the airport transit buses with various drop off point in the city center. Istanbul like any other modern city is equipped with many modern transportation modes. However, some part of Istanbul consists of deep slope, so, be careful when you walk around especially during the raining season or snow. To get around Istanbul, consider purchase ISTANBULKART which you can use for tram, buses and metro.

Public transportation in Turkey is among the best in the world especially their buses. Booking can be done online. However, the seat was assigned based on gender, hence you might not be able to sit together with your opposite gender companion. Based on my experience however, this rule mainly applies to local Turkish.

The best way to travel here is by self-driving. The car rental is cheap here. However, the price of petrol is expensive. So, to maximise your dollar, please rent a diesel car. Toll is almost non-existence here. However, it would be safe to rent a car with HGS tag or OGS-onboard unit. No cash will be accepted. Your car rental provided will deduct the toll fees when they do the refund of your deposit. Pick up and return can be done on different location including the airport. My piece of advice is to rent from reputable rental company as just after I provide my credit card to my rental car provider (small local company), multiple unauthorised transactions on my credit card amounting to USD4000+ was made. Luckily, I manage to log a dispute and no payment was made.

20 days turkey tour

Turkey boasts some of the best food in the world. From Kebab, Mediterranean cuisine to Burklava, you can find it all here. And the hygiene level is world-class too. So, you can rest assure when you ate even from the street.

Turkey government pay extra attention to make the country safe for visitors which make Turkey one of the most visited country in the world. The locals are friendly and helpful. However, with fame comes scammer.

20 days turkey tour

As in the poster shown, I encounter two of the traps (shoe shiners and carpet sellers) in Istanbul. Just walk away when you feel uncomfortable. Some of the scammers are persistent but once they realise they not able to gain anything from you, they will walk away.

Better be safe than sorry, right?

4. Language

As most Turkish can speak excellent English, language barrier will not be a problem here as well.

My thought after visiting Turkey

Coming from another Islamic country, my initial thought about Turkey is it going to be a conservative country. However, it proves I am wrong. Turkish are among the less conservative Islamic countries. I love the fact how the Turkish manage to strike a balance between the modern world and their religious value.

Whenever you go in Turkey, expect to greet with smile by the locals. And of course, the foods are the best. 😍

AND I can't wait to go back to explore the remaining of the country. 20 days in this amazing country is too short.

16- to 23-Day Itineraries in Turkey

Last Updated on April 9, 2024

If you can spend about   three weeks (16 to 23 days) in Turkey, you can see quite a lot.

Here's a loose  TripKit™   itinerary  for a  21-day trip  through  Aegean ,   Mediterranean   and   central Turkey with suggestions for where you can add or omit a few days.

Another idea: spend about 10 days doing a circuit of the untouristed  Black Sea coast  and  eastern Turkey .  More...

Days 1 to 4

Arrive in  Istanbul . Consider flying right through to your next destination, because you'll probably have to be back in Istanbul at the end of your trip to fly home, so plan to save Istanbul for the end of your trip.

If you're coming from a long distance (say, California or Australia), you may want to stay a few days in the city to regain your land legs.

—Here are sightseeing programs for  2 to 5 days in Istanbul.

—Here are  Istanbul hotel recommendations.

Days 5 to 7

Travel to  Cappadocia  by  plane  or  bus .  Here are details on  getting to Cappadocia .

If you plan to take a  hot-air balloon flight  in Cappadocia, reserve your place(s) for the first morning you'll be there so that you'll have fall-back days in case of bad weather.  More...

Here's info on  Cappadocia hotels.

Highlights of Cappadocia are  Göreme Open Air Museum ,  Uçhisar ,  underground cities ,  Ihlara Valley , Zelve Valley ,  Soğanlı Valleys , and   Avanos .   More...

Drive along the ancient  Silk Road  from Cappadocia to  Konya , admiring the  Seljuk Turkish caravansarays  along the way. Stop at the  Sultan Hanı  for  tea  or a meal, and to see the grandest caravanserai of them all.

Spend the rest of the day and part of the next morning visiting the  Mevlana Museum  (Tomb of  Rumi ), and admiring Konya's other fine  medieval Seljuk buildings .  More...

Drive from Konya to the  Mediterranean coast , perhaps stopping in  Beyşehir  to see the unusual  Eşrefoğlu Mosque  and to have a lunch of lake fish. The drive is through dramatic mountains, ending on the coastal highway. Choose your beach destination: go east to  Alanya , west and south to  Side , or west to  Antalya .  More...

Days 10 & 11

Stay at least two nights on the coast here, more if you want time at the beach and/or to take excursions to  Termessos  and  Karain ;  Perge ,  Side  and  Aspendos ;  Köprülü Kanyon  for  rafting ; or  Phaselis  and  Olimpos .  More...

(For a shorter trip, spend all your "Mediterranean days" here, then drive northwest to  Denizli  and  Pamukkale , stay there one night, then continue west along the Meander River valley via  Aphrodisias  to  Ephesus .)

Days 12 to 14

Drive south from Antalya, then west along the coast, stopping for one or more nights at  Kaş ,  Kalkan ,  Patara ,  Fethiye ,  Ölüdeniz  or  Dalyan . Each has its charm and appeal.  More...

We, my wife and I, had an amazing two-week trip to Turkey, thanks to the impeccable planning and organization by Ismail from Made In Turkey Tours. From the very beginning, Ismail paid great attention to our specific interests and travel style, knowing that we preferred venturing off the beaten path. We shared our desired sights and budget with him, and he delivered beyond our expectations.

A month before our departure, a devastating earthquake hit the region we had planned to visit. This tragic event forced us to modify half of our itinerary, but Ismail was incredibly responsive and quickly made the necessary adjustments. Whatever problems occurred during the trip, Ismail fixed them momentarily, ensuring that our journey continued seamlessly.

Throughout our journey, we had the pleasure of working with three knowledgeable tour guides and three skilled drivers, each contributing their own unique expertise to our experience. They went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of and provided valuable insights into the history, culture, and hidden gems of Turkey.

The hotels arranged by Made In Turkey Tours were excellent. We were impressed by the quality of accommodation and the hospitality extended to us. Each hotel was carefully selected and offered comfort, convenience, and a true sense of Turkish hospitality.

Given the nature of our trip, we spent considerable time on the road, making the choice of transportation crucial. Thankfully, the Mercedes van provided by Made In Turkey Tours surpassed all our previous international travel experiences. With its comfortable seating arrangement, including two rows of seats facing each other, the van offered us flexibility and enhanced interaction with our guide. We were delighted to find that the vehicle was meticulously maintained, with daily cleanings and replenished water and snacks. Not to mention, the inclusion of Wi-Fi made our journeys even more enjoyable.

During a memorable lunch in Urgup, we were pleasantly surprised when Ismail himself approached our table to wish us a good appetite. He kindly presented us with a bottle of the exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018, produced by Turasan, a renowned winery from the captivating Cappadocia region. This thoughtful gesture, perfectly coordinated with our guide, truly speaks volumes about the exceptional service provided by Made In Turkey Tours.

We are immensely grateful to Ismail and his team for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to ensuring that our trip went smoothly. Their attention to detail and swift response to unforeseen circumstances made our journey even more remarkable than we could have imagined. We wholeheartedly recommend Made In Turkey Tours to anyone seeking an unforgettable travel experience in Turkey.

Testimonials

My family and I visited turkey at the end of 2010..we were very impressed with our tour guides Mr Nizam Adsiz as as well as Mrs Aylin Sekban.. Both spoke good english and we managed to develop a friendship with both of them which made the tours more enjoyable. Will definitely be going back to Turkey.
We have just arrived from Turkey, we had an splendid adventure from Efesus to Capadoccia, visiting wonderful cities and archeological sites. Pamukkale, Afrodisias, Sagalassos….Konya, everything was wonderful Ertunga, Blüent and Mustafa made our journey fantastic.

Maria Graciela G-Mexico City, Meksika

Ertunga is a great guide, super friendly, very big knowledge of the area and very pleasant to be around. He arrived with a driver and a Mercedes van, good space for the 3 of us. He made the tour as we went along, so we did see exactly what we wanted, and as our son is only 4 years old, we did have to speed up some places. All made possible by Ertunga, though I am sure he could tell much more in each place, since his knowledge seems extreme. Be sure to book with Ertunga.
Amazing guide with a lot of patience and a wealth of information about every sight we visited. Would definately recommend him highly for a smaller or a larger group.
Turkey wouldn’t be the same without Ertunga…he treated us just like family and was the best private tour I could ever have !!!

Depending on the size of your group, we can use Mercedes Vito or Mercedes Sprinter. All our vehicles are new (model 2016 or newer), comfortable and air-conditioned. You can see our vehicles

It depends on your itinerary… If you plan to fly between areas, in each one you will have a local guide; in that way you can get the best experience in each area and also avoid some extra costs (hotel accommodation and domestic flights for guide). If you plan to have a ground transportation, you will have a same guide during entire trip (in some small places it is not possible to find a local guide) and that is something that some of our guests prefer…

Prices depend on the size of your group and services that are included. For example, some guests prefer to arrange accommodation on their own. The itineraries listed on our site are there just to give you idea about how much you can see during your trip. Depending on your specific ideas and thoughts, we customise your trip and send you price offer…

Once we receive an inquiry, we can send you itinerary option with price in 24 hours, as latest. Afterwards, depending on your ideas and suggestions we can change some details until we have the options that you want to book.

You can pay via bank transfer, credit card or cash. We also accept PayPal / Payoneer deposit payments. You should pay 20% deposit when you decide to book; balance can be paid during your stay in Turkey.

Once you decide to book a tour with us, you should pay 20% deposit and it is refundable for 30 days from the date it is received. If you decide to cancel the trip afterwards, we will not be able to refund your deposit.

Please visit www.evisa.gov.tr to get all information and obtain electronic visa if necessary.

During your tour you will eat like a local. Local beer and wine are optional and at your own expense. We can arrange vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free meals if requested.

Normally it is 15 kg checked laggage and 8 kg in cabin, but for our guests we arrange eco flexible tickets so your baggage allowance would be 20 kg + 8 kg in cabin.

You are strongly advised to buy travel insurance before you arrive to Turkey. Our vehiches have full traffic insurance, but we can’t arrange your travel insurance. You can choose one of many travel insurance policies in your country…

Absolutely Turkey

The tour while being short took us through most of the icons of turkey and gave me an insight into the culture and the history of the nation. The tour guide, Emre was the highlight of the trip. Extremely knowledgable about the history and passionate about the subject. I would highly recommend him to everyone i know.

Turkish Breeze-10 Days Tour

Turkish Breeze-10 Days

Took the full 10 day tour with my wife including istanbul, izmir, Pamukkale, Antalya and cappadocia. Cannot thank them enough. Incredibly well organized and professional. We even booked the night before the tour started and they set up everything for you so you don't have to think. The guides are as knowledgeable as anyone can hope for. Tour guide in Izmir was especially excellent, telling me about fake coins, coming up with solutions for bugs, getting my money back on a bad drink, etc. Overall, they go out of their way to accommodate your situation best they can and it's not easy to organize these complex trips with multiple planes, etc. The reviews here were right: if you want a thought-free trip, these guys are the way to go. Only feedback is timing at each place. Everything is incredibly tight so be prepared to not spend as much time in certain places as you wish. Definitely be ready to be always moving. It feels like there's never a chance to breathe from all the activities and travel. I would recommend spacing certain things out ESPECIALLY Pammakule waterfalls which is arguably everyone's favorite thing. Felt like I got 30 min to be there, which is not right to the guests But overally, it's hard to plan a cross country tour for everyone, and they do an amazing job taking you safely step by step through a lovely vacation. You will totally unwind your brain with them.

10 Days Treasures of Turkey Tour Tour

10 Days Treasures of Turkey Tour

Barış led a wonderful trip! I took this tour during November 2023, which is during the rainy season. Would recommend an umbrella and rain resistant warm layers. Even so, had the full tour experience with all locations listed. Enjoyable tour that I would highly recommend to others. Tour guide was knowledgeable and led a perfect pace to enjoy each space on the walking tour. Fun full day tour of the main tourist spots in Turkey!

Turkey Encompassed Tour

Turkey Encompassed

This trip exceeded all my expectations. The small group was perfect, we were able to bypass lines, keep together as a group, or easily met up and explored on our own. I was very lucky to be placed with a charming young woman as my roomie. Our driver Abraham was amazing, he was probably the best driver and though some roads were quite tricky, he handled them with ease. We had 2 guides, both of whom were excellent. John, our first ( for the first 5 days ) was extremely knowledgeable, charming, resourceful and funny, unfortunately he developed a some kind of bug and felt he could not complete the tour, without compromising our trip. He was able to find a remarkable substitute, ~Ahmet Berke Topaloğlu. Berke, was challenged with stepping into some very big shoes, holy smokes he excelled. Berke was knowledgeable with attention to detail. He admitted he was still working on his English skills, yet within those 2 weeks him command of the language improved significantly. He too was absolutely charming, friendly and sincerely passionate, looking into all our needs and concerns. He even took us to his Moms house for tea and he play a traditional Turkish instrument! I highly recommend this Intrepid Tour., I’m already planning my next!

Premium Turkey in Depth Tour

Premium Turkey in Depth

This trip gave a great overview of Turkey. Fatih made the trip better with his passion, knowledge and knack of knowing just how much to deliver. Our group got on really well which enhanced the trip for me. It was helpful to take up Fatih’s restaurant suggestions. The only thing which would have increased my enjoyment would have been some high end food but I know I didn’t sign up for a food tour.

I can’t say enough good things about this company. From the start when I booked the tour, Karem reached out to me and kept me updated of all the details of the tour, flights, changes in schedules and availability of services due to the pandemic/ local lockdowns. The agents meeting me at each location were not only on time, but courteous and the guides were knowledgeable and willing to adapt the tour to my needs and wishes. I can’t wait to go back to Turkey and visit new areas in non - pandemic times. I would definitely use this company again.

I have taken this tour in conjunction with TourRadar and EuropaMundo in Nov/Dec 2023. From booking to payment went very well and EuropaMundo conducted the tour in a professional way. Accommodations, meals, couch were excellent. A very good tour to remember. I will recommend it to others.

9 Days Highlights of Turkey Tour Tour

9 Days Highlights of Turkey Tour

I had an awesome and unforgettable experience with the City of Sultans! The tours were all jam packed with things to see and do from morning till afternoon. There was a little misunderstanding with lunch on the walking tour of Istanbul but they went over and beyond to make up for it. The hotel in Kusadasi was the best I've had, with a balcony and a front seat view of the coastline and the cruise ships docked right in front of me! ? The authentic Turkish cuisine at lunch were delicious and elaborate with so many choices on the buffet. ? My flight back to Istanbul was delayed from 8:05pm to 10:15pm. By the time we got our bags and left the airport it was already 12 midnight. The representative who coordinated my ride back to the hotel was still there waiting at the gate for me. ? After a long day of touring and traveling, it felt good to have someone else in charge at this point. I would surely be back with family & friends and book another tour with the City of Sultans! I highly recommend the City of Sultans for your first and next Turkish adventure!

What people love about Turkey Tours in March

Fantastic experience, very professional and great guide and driver. From the picking up at the airport to the drop off and everything in between was amazing. Love the choice of hotels too. Perfect group size. Thanks to everybody for all your hard work.
Great bunch of people, tour guide was personally involved as part of the group, incredible sights and activities. 10/10 Would recommend.
Had a great time! The tour guide, Eray, was knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring a smooth journey. Although there were several commercial stops, they added an local flavor. The hotels were of good standard, and the sights, especially in Cappadocia, were breathtaking. A well-organized and memorable trip!

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler made one last birdie and let out one big exhale Saturday on a wild day of charges and collapses at the Masters, giving him a 1-under 71 and a one-shot lead over two-time major champion Collin Morikawa.

Scheffler began by chipping in for birdie from across the first green. He finished with an 8-foot birdie putt that caught just enough of the right side of the cup.

Everything in between was bonkers, right to the very end. Bryson DeChambeau drove into the right trees on the 18th, pitched out to the fairway and then holed out from 77 yards for a most unlikely birdie that might have salvaged his chances.

Six players had at least a tie for the lead at one point.

There was a five-way tie for the lead on back nine. Morikawa looked to break out of the tie when he had a long eagle putt on the par-5 13th. He three-putted for par, and then the other four players all made bogey.

Max Homa has gone 32 holes without a birdie and he was only two behind. Xander Schauffele has gone 25 holes without a bogey, and that goes a long way. He was five back.

Augusta National didn’t need a ferocious wind to be wildly entertaining. The course was tough as ever, with a wind that would have felt scary if not for the day before.

Scheffler was at 7-under 209 as he goes for a second Masters green jacket and tries to extend a dominant stretch that includes two wins on tough courses and a runner-up finish in his last three tournaments.

“It’s nice to have that experience, but going into tomorrow, that’s really all that it is,” he said. “And I can reflect on some of that stuff from that round, and this is a position I’m very familiar with. I’m excited for the challenge of going and trying to win the golf tournament tomorrow.”

Morikawa made two tough pars to finish off a 69, making him the only player to break par all three days at this Masters. Not bad for a someone who only found a swing key on Monday, switched putters after the first round and has had a top 10 since the first week of the year.

“If you asked me at the beginning of the week I’d be one back heading into Sunday, I would have taken that any time,” Morikawa said. “You give yourself a chance with 18 holes left, that’s all you can really do.”

Another shot back was Homa (73), whose last birdie was on the fourth hole of the second round. He has made 32 pars in his last 36 holes.

Eight players were separated by five shots going into the final round, where the greens are likely to be even faster, crispier and more frightening.

Tiger Woods was not among them. Neither was Rory McIlroy.

Woods, having made his Masters record 24th consecutive cut on Friday, started the third round seven shots out of the lead and hopeful of at least making his massive following think there might be more magic left in that battered 48-year-old body.

Instead, Woods posted his highest round in three decades playing the majors . He shot an 82, the third time he has failed to break 80 in a major, and the first since the 2015 U.S. Open.

“Just hit the ball in all the places that I know I shouldn’t hit it,” Woods said.

McIlroy came to the Masters thinking this might be the year he finally got the last leg of the career Grand Slam. All he could muster was a 71 that left him 10 shots behind with 20 players in front of him.

There were no shortage of challengers.

Ludvig Aberg, the rising Swedish star playing in his first major, was among those who had a brief share of the lead until missing a pair of short par putts on the back nine. He still managed a 70 and was only three shots behind.

Another newcomer to the Masters, Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark, had the lead to himself with three straight birdies around the turn. He celebrated that good fortunate by running off five straight bogeys, putting the ball in the water on both par 5s.

And then there was DeChambeau, who started the third round tied with Scheffler and Homa.

DeChambeau kept making enough birdies to hang around and was only one shot behind until he decided to go for the green from the trees on the par-5 15th. He went well right toward the 17th fairway — the second time in as many days he played a par 5 from two holes — only this one didn’t work out so well.

He chunked his wedge and watched it tumble into the pond. He took a penalty drop, pitched on and two-putted for double bogey. And then he three-putted for bogey on the 16th. And right when it appeared to be falling apart, he made his surprise birdie to limit the damage to 75. He was four shots behind.

Scheffler didn’t escape the craziness. He reached 8 under with a 30-foot birdie putt on the third hole and was still seemingly in control until his approach to the 10th took a hard hop over the green and into the bushes. He looked to escape with bogey until missing a 30-inch putt. Then, he hit an average chip and missed an 8-foot par putt on the 11th.

“All of a sudden I’m probably going from in the lead to a few out of the lead and then … you know, things happen pretty fast out there,” Scheffler said.

He saved par on the 12th with a 7-foot putt — as important as any he made — and showed rare emotion when he holed a 30-foot eagle putt on the 13th.

“C’mon, baby!” he yelled when the putt dropped.

“Things got a little dicey in the middle,” Scheffler said. “On No. 10, I hit what I thought was a decent shot 8 feet from the hole and it wound up in the bushes. I did a good job of staying patient.”

2024 Masters live stream, watch online: TV coverage, channel, Tiger Woods in Round 3, broadcast schedule

Watch every single shot from the biggest names in golf throughout round 3 at the 2024 masters.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The third day of action at the 2024 Masters is going to be a significant one as Moving Day meets Augusta National with the leaderboard undoubtedly shifting ahead of the tournament's final 18 holes. Two days of pristine golf at the nation's best course remain with the best hoping to finish not just in the money but as high up the leaderboard as possible.

The grounds are filled to capacity with patrons, and they were undoubtedly keen to see how Tiger Woods continues to play after he created Masters history on Friday by making his 24th consecutive cut , a tournament record. Woods also hit 22 of 36 fairways through his first two rounds, his best such mark since 1999.

Though he was on the edge of contention entering Saturday, after shooting his highest nine-hole total in Masters history going 6 over on the first nine, Tiger is now firmly out of contention with some questioning whether he will finish 72 holes at all. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy -- after an extended session on the range Friday night -- shot one of the better rounds of Saturday's early wave. Neither he nor reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm are a threat to those atop the leaderboard.

Far more likely to find the winner's circle is Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 green jacket winner seeking to win his second in three years. Scheffler entered as an overwhelming favorite and sits +100 to win the tournament entering Saturday's third round. He is one of three men tied atop the leaderboard with Max Homa the author of Friday's best performance and Bryson DeChambeau holding steady looking for his second major championship and first since 2020. Who pulls ahead between that trio remains to be seen, but you can follow  2024 Masters leaderboard live updates throughout Round 3  right here and find out.

There is so much to pay attention to this week that it can be overwhelming at times. No worries: We have you covered. On Saturday alone, you can watch the entire first rounds from Woods, McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and young sensation Ludvig Åberg.
