Brief Background to the Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey vehicles are medium-sized crossover SUVs (CUVs) that are issued by the Dodge brand. They were first released in 2009. Then there was a rebadge to the Fiat Freemont in 2011 as a parallel collection. The cars come in right-hand and left-hand drive.

The Dodge Journey comes with warning indicators just like other Dodge models. When these warning lights come up; it could be a system malfunction, security issue, or need for urgent maintenance.

Driver safety shouldn't be taken for granted, especially when a warning light comes on. Taking a related risk could be bad for you and/or the vehicle

What Is the Electronic Throttle Control on a Dodge Journey?

Your Dodge's electronic throttle control features an accelerator pedal module which has a motor, sensors, and a throttle plate. It's a great improvement from the traditional mechanical linkage in old-model cars. Although it isn't immune to mechanical faults.

The ETC measures the pressure drivers apply on the gas/accelerator pedal. The pedal isn't mechanically linked to the engine. A sensor tracks the pedal's position and the data is transmitted to the ETC for engine RPMs (revolutions per minute) to be adjusted.

Gas pedal pressure will determine how much the throttle passage will be opened. There's a flat valve at the opening that's regulated by the pedal's movement. It's called the throttle plate or butterfly valve.

The throttle plate rotates inside the throttle body when you depress the pedal. Then the air will be let into the intake manifold and quickly drawn into it by its vacuum.

1) Sensors in the ETC System

Two sensors that are instrumental to the ETC's operations include the following:

  • Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor calculates the change in airflow. It will then send results to the engine's control unit (ECU) or electronic control module (ECM). This sensor is usually located between the throttle body and the air cleaner.

  • Throttle position (TPS) Sensor or Throttle Valve Position Sensor

It's linked to the throttle body and it tracks your Dodge's throttle angle. You can find it on the reverse side of the throttle plate.

Don't get confused about the two sensors mentioned above. The TPS simply informs the ECU/ECM that you've depressed the gas pedal, while the MAF detects the air added. The NAF

2) The Role of the ECU

It's the ECU that controls the balancing of the air-fuel mixture in real-time. It also calculates the best moment to activate the spark plugs to ignite the balanced air-fuel combination.

3) Wide-Open Throttle (WOT)

This is what's referred to as full throttle. It's when the throttle is fully opened on an internal combustion engine or in your car. WOT also means the max-speed state of running an engine or the usual condition of a completely opened butterfly valve or throttle plate.

Your depression of the gas pedal in this situation is referred to as "flooring it". There'll be maximum intake of air because of the lowest resistance to incoming air.

What Does the Electronic Throttle Control Warning Light Mean?

The electronic throttle control warning light on your Dodge Journey could mean that the system has detected a communication problem that has resulted in an ETC error. It's most likely a result of a miscommunication between the ETC and its related sensors.

Dodge Journey vehicles were introduced almost a decade and a half ago, so the dashboard instrument cluster arrangement may vary based on the model year of your car. Still, the lightning symbol is very easy to notice when it illuminates.

Electronic Throttle Control Warning Light Behavior

The electronic throttle control warning light can be a troublesome alert that can come on at any time after the first illumination. And it can go off easily and come on after some days or even weeks. It may stay on for hours in some cases, only to stop when you restart the vehicle.

It will seem like the alert has a mind of its own. Worse still, the symptoms of the fault may not be easy to notice. The car might just be driving just fine regardless of the warning light. There's no need to get confused or nervous.

The ETC light could stay on after the initial indicator check when you first start your car. It could also activate when driving. Even the check engine light (CEL) could activate with it simultaneously.

What To Do Immediately After Noticing the ETC Warning Light

You could continue driving, but it wouldn't be the best move. Just remember to get the car checked at your earliest convenience if you decide to take the RISK.

Drivers could also stop the Dodge instead and park it at a convenient spot or put it in "park". Then proceed to put the engine off and cycle the ignition. The warning light may go off at this point.

Your car should be drivable if the alert doesn't go off. But the vehicle will need to be serviced ASAP. In case of the light flashing, then you should understand that the problem is a severe one that demands more urgency. It won't be advisable to drive the car in such a scenario, but you actually could.

Utilize a diagnostic scan tool to check for vehicle fault codes if you have one. This should be done before any other thing-be it DIY physical checks or hiring a professional technician. It may save you from getting scammed by the dealer or mechanic with a wrong diagnosis and unnecessary repair bills.

Ask the professional or dealer attending to you if they can let you be with them in the vehicle as the diagnoses are taking place. Some repairers offer such a service.

You'll have to take your car to the dealer or auto repair workshop immediately if you don't have a scan tool. Decreased engine power, rough engine noise, or abnormally high idle speed may be experienced if you drive the Dodge while the light is flashing.

Performance issues such as misfiring, stalling, and unstable throttle feedback when the light comes on while driving means you must stop the car. Towing the vehicle to a repairer is recommended at this point if you want to avoid complicating the situation.

Other Symptoms of a Bad ETC

You should look out for the following signs when the ETC alert comes on:

  • Idle surges
  • Rough idling
  • Uninitiated acceleration (car accelerating by itself)
  • Reduced fuel mileage (poor fuel economy)
  • Engine misfiring

Electronic Throttle Control System Reset Procedure

The problem being indicated by the ETC light might just be the need for a gas pedal reset. The pedal position might not be well lined up or aligned. This will result in a communication error with the sensors that trigger the motor which closes or opens the throttle. Such could be the case in a high-mileage Dodge Journey.

Thankfully, the pedal reset can be done on your own instead of hiring a professional. Follow the steps below carefully to reset the pedal.

  • Step 1: Switch on the ignition key without starting the vehicle.
  • Step 2: Press the accelerator pedal to the floor and ease it up.
  • Step 3: Start the vehicle and depress the pedal again. Observe whether your Dodge will respond or not. Check to see if the ETC light has gone off as well.
  • Step 4: Proceed to drive the car around to see if the ETC is working well and if there are no other issues.
  • Step 5: Take the car to a repair place if the throttle problem continues and the ETC light is still on.

Most of the warning lights that illuminate on your dashboard can't be taken for granted. And the Dodge Journey electronic throttle control warning light isn't an exception. That's why they're referred to as warnings. Always deal with the lightning symbol alert coming on as soon as possible.

Scanning your Dodge for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCS) will help in eliminating so many possibilities related to the ETC alert. It will save you from diagnostics bills at a repair shop or wasting money on "trial and error". You may only need to do a simple fix such as swapping out the air filter and ETC sensor, or resetting the pedal.

Why Does the Dashboard Show a Lightning Bolt Symbol?

The dashboard shows a lightning bolt symbol because of vacuum leaks around the intake manifold or electrical problems in the electronic throttle control system. The symbol also appears when the car activates limp mode, or the throttle or accelerator position sensors are damaged.

Vacuum Leaks Due to Gasket Damage

A red lightning bolt meaning is sometimes associated with a vacuum leak in the car. Vacuum leaks occur when if the gasket is worn out or damaged in the system.

These gaskets seal the engine head and intake manifold to prevent any gaps or gas leakages. However, the gaps become prominent as the gasket ages or gets damaged.

A lightning bolt on dashboard Dodge Journey or other cars is expected if there’s a vacuum leak due to one of the following reasons:

  • Cracked or worn vacuum hoses cause the air to leak into the intake manifold. These hoses are made up of rubber and are prone to damage due to high pressure or impact.
  • A damaged actuator causes vacuum leaks. Vacuum actuators control different engine parts, such as electronic throttle body and power brake booster and when it malfunctions, the lightning bolt symbol pops up on your dashboard.
  • Loose or improperly connected vacuum hoses lead to air leaking into the intake manifold and a vacuum leak ultimately resulting in lightning bolt symbol car.
  • A defective intake manifold gasket creates leaks. The gasket seals the engine block and manifold.
  • A cracked or damaged intake manifold causes the air to leak.

Once you start noticing the symptoms of a vacuum leak, you should verify the problem. Look for signs such as rough idle, stalling, high fuel consumption, poor fuel economy, engine misfires, and hesitation to start the car.

You can confirm the leakage by visual inspection . It usually works when there’s a small leak. To identify, you can look for cracks or holes around the hoses, gaskets, and the manifold.

You can also look for loose connections that can be a potential cause of leakage. There’s usually a hissing sound coming from the leak point.

If visual inspection does not work, go for a pressure test . You’ll need a vacuum pump to create negative pressure inside the manifold. The air will escape in case of a leak, and you will detect it once the pressure drops.

Moreover, you can use a smoke machine to conduct a smoke test. It involves blowing smoke into the manifold. If it comes out of the hoses, you will detect the leaks.

Mechanics also conduct the propane test by spraying propane around the hoses and connections. In case of a leak, the engine will draw the propane and rev up.

Electrical Problems Triggering the Symbol

If you want to know the electronic throttle control red lightning bolt on dash meaning, you should consider various electrical problems. These include connection and wiring problems, a faulty electrical motor, or a defective ETC module.

It’s not necessary to have all the problems at the same time, so you will need to check each of them one after the other. The electronic throttle control (ETC) system contains many parts that are connected to each other with connectors and wires.

If one of these connections breaks, the bolt sign appears on the dashboard. Visual inspection lets you detect frayed, corroded, or faulty throttle wiring . You can also wiggle the wires to see if they are loose.

Otherwise, use a multimeter to analyze the resistance of the wires. You will know there’s a fault if a wire has higher resistance than expected. You can hire a mechanic if you’re uncomfortable running this electric test.

Handling the wires carefully is essential because they are delicate and get easily damaged. Apart from the wires, you should check the connectors and the motor. These components get damaged if exposed to moisture or if the car experiences impact due to an accident.

Moreover, the ETC module gets damaged if there is a software glitch or manufacturing defect in the computer of your vehicle. The module becomes faulty if dropped or hit in an accident or exposed to extreme temperatures or environmental conditions.

It can also fail due to a short circuit or high current flowing through the circuit. You can prevent the failure of the ETC module by keeping it clean and avoiding too many accessories because it overloads the circuit.

Limp Mode Activation in Some Cars

Limp mode activates in some cars when the control unit detects a problem with the transmission or engine. It is a safety feature that limits the engine’s performance and power to save it from severe damage.

The feature may activate due to engine misfire, damaged sensors, or low oil levels. Limp mode activation is mainly followed by a red lightning bolt and check engine light on the car’s dashboard.

The feature makes the car run slowly and creates difficulty in shifting gears. You will also notice the following symptoms:

  • Erratic shifting
  • Ineffective  braking
  • Sluggish acceleration
  • Loss of power steering
  • Reduced engine power

It’s important to note that the limp mode is not a fixing mechanism and does not repair the car. It’s just a preventive feature that saves your vehicle from further damage. Therefore, you should always consult a mechanic to diagnose the underlying problem.

Damaged Gas or Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APP sensor)

The APP sensor measures the position of the accelerator pedal in an automobile. It is a vital part of the car’s engine, as it tells the engine how much power to deliver.

The APP sensor sends signals to the control unit based on the pedal’s position. The control unit then uses the signal to decide the fuel quantity to inject and how much air to let into the engine.

A faulty sensor will send the wrong information, and the ETC system will fail to operate as intended. The sensor may fail due to one of the following reasons :

  • The sensor can get damaged due to road impact since it’s located on the accelerator. It may get damaged due to potholes or car collisions.
  • Electrical overload, such as short circuits, can damage the sensor since it’s an electrical part.
  • Debris, dirt, or sand may lodge in the sensor housing and damage the sensor.
  • Exposure to moisture or road salt damages the APP sensor
  • The sensor might be defective from its production

Damaged Car Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

Your car’s TPS analyses the throttle valve positions . The sensor helps the engine management system decide the amount of fuel or air to release for combustion.

However, if the sensor gets damaged, the electronic throttle control light on car won’t start. The TPS fails to send signals to the control unit or sends false signals. The warning light appears when the control unit has difficulty figuring out the timing of specific processes.

A damaged or faulty TPS causes problems that affect the engine’s performance. These include acceleration issues, activation of limp mode, or the engine may not start or stall.

A damaged TPS can cause the throttle valve to stay shut or open. If stuck closed, the engine won’t get air and fail to start. Contrarily, a stuck open bad throttle body valve allows too much air into the engine and results in high idle.

How To Fix a Car That Shows Lightning Bolt Sign on the Dash?

To fix a car that shows lightning bolt sign on the dash, you should connect a scanning device to diagnose the problem. After detection, you can reset the car, clean the throttle, or replace the wiring or sensors to make the lightning symbol disappear.

Read Trouble Codes To Identify the Problem

Before you start fixing the problem, it is vital to identify the exact issue. You can use a code scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) shown by your car’s control unit.

All you have to do is connect the scanner to the OBD port in your car. You can find the port under the dashboard. The scanner will display the diagnostic code after a few seconds.

The diagnostic code is a series of letters and numbers with specific meanings. These codes are associated with a particular problem, which you can find in the scanner manual.

You can f ollow the steps below to find the problem :

  • Find the OBD port under the dashboard and connect the scanner. Ensure the scanner is compatible with your car model, and be gentle with the port.
  • Turn on the scanner and let it scan the computer.
  • Once the scanner displays the DTC, record it.
  • Find the same DTC in a code manual and diagnose your car’s problem.

You can hire a mechanic to avoid performing this diagnosis yourself. Also, sometimes the scanner shows too many faults. In that case, it would be best to reset the system, drive the car briefly, and try again.

Reset the Symbol on Dashboard

Wondering how to reset red lightning bolt on Dash Dodge Avenger or any other car? Sometimes, resetting can make the lighting bolt disappear from the dashboard. Manually resetting the ETC can be easy when you know the right procedure.

So here’s what you can do:

  • Turn off your car and wait for a few minutes.
  • Turn the key to ON, but do not start the vehicle.
  • Press and hold the gas pedal all the way down for 10 seconds.
  • Release the gas pedal.
  • Start the car.

However, it would be best to be careful while pressing the pedal because pressing too hard or for a long time can damage the engine. Also, before resetting, ensure your car is in park or neutral.

Repair Bad Connections or Replace Wires

If none of the previous fixes work, you must inspect the wiring and connectors near the throttle to get rid of this warning light. It will take you some time to detect the damaged or frayed wiring. But once you find them, here’s how you can replace them :

  • Find the throttle body in the intake manifold.
  • Remove the battery connection to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Use a wrench or socket to remove the throttle system from the engine.
  • Closely inspect the wiring and look for any cracks, corrosion, or breaks.
  • Remove the insulation from the end of the new wire and connect it to the throttle body. Always connect the wires to the accurate terminals.
  • Install the throttle body back in the engine and reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine to check for any problems.

Clean Throttle Body or Replace Its Sensors

Since a dirty throttle body triggers the dashboard bolt light, cleaning it makes it disappear. You can buy a throttle cleaner and follow the steps below:

  • Park the car on an even surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
  • Detach the air duct from the throttle system.
  • Remove the vacuum lines or electrical connectors and mark them to remember during reconnection.
  • Move the throttle plates and spray the cleaner on the internal parts of the throttle body.
  • Dry the area by spraying compressed air.
  • Reinstall the connections only when the throttle body is completely dry.
  • Connect the vacuum lines, connectors, and battery.
  • Take the automobile for a test drive to see if the warning lights disappear.

If you detect defective throttle control sensors, hiring a mechanic to replace them is better. The procedure is a bit complicated, so you might worsen the situation if you don’t have prior experience.

After reading all lightning bolt symbol car causes and fixes, you can move to the next stage and get your tools or hire a professional. Remembering the following key points will make the process easier:

  • A lightning bolt warning light appears because of a vacuum leak, electrical faults, or damaged sensors .
  • It can also illuminate due to the limp mode activation or contaminated throttle.
  • You can resolve the warning by replacing the faulty sensors and connections or cleaning the throttle .

These steps will go a long way and protect your engine’s performance.

Yes I have had them changed and cleaned.

the traction control off light came on the same time the ETC did and same time it did it went into limp mode and idols ruff.

I did clear it before just can’t remember the sequence.

I too have just run into this issue. Traction control light on then lightning bolt with limp mode. Can't go above 30ish. No codes being thrown. No abs light so I think that rules out sensors? Starts and shifts perfect (only to second gear then limp). Runs a little rough sitting in reverse. Fuses checked ok. Just bought this 11 months ago for 7500. A bit upset.  Retired and on fixed income living in a car dependant area. Thank God for door dash. Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Throttle body? Throttle sensor?

Wiartonwilly

I have seen the coolant temp sensor cause this problem. Antifreeze will seep thru the sensor and will actually follow the wires and get into the computer.  check for coolant in the coolant temp sensor plug.

Into the computer meaning the pcm.  But it’s the crazy temp probe sensors causing  limp mode isn’t it ? PCM doesn’t short out, It’s pretty much sealed, main circuit board is encased in clear urethane I believe.  Must create a big mess under hood though.

Mine was the throttle body was bad or stuck

I had that STRONG suspicion of that when I replied to you earlier. But your post was for a specific request rather than help to diagnose or fix a problem. Glad you did get things "squared away" with your Journey!

Same problem here. 2013 journey 2.4l. Traction control light then limp mode. I replaced wheel sensors, no fix. Shop states etc motor performance and motor current codes. Told me it needed a new throttle body.  Wanted to charge me 600. I pulled it out myself in under 15 mins. Awaiting new one to arrive.  I have a feeling that this is not the problem.  The old throttle body looks fine. Not dirty. Butterfly turning fine. No noise in it to make me believe one of the wheels inside is faulty. Guess we will see.

It’s a servo motor so measurement from meter for resistance etc more important than visual.

Hitachi is the oem manufacturer, new is better than reman parts usually.

Might need quickie calibration after install if it doesn’t work correctly.

Can be done yourself with out any equipment.

It was the throttle body. Dealer wanted 600 bucks. Took me 15 mins and 65 aftermarket part. Running great. No programming required.

I'm going through this currently.  I've changed out the air filter, map sensor, throttle body & gasket, fuel injectors, spark plugs, air flow sensor, pcv valve already.  I did a smoke test but can't find an obvious leak for the p2173 code that shows up.  Smoke only seems to come out of the intake vent. The error seems to do it when I first start up and go to brake.  If I stop and restart the engine it may do this a second time but then is fine from that point on.

Side note:  The heater hose assembly blew out after the plastic tee failed so that had to be changed, shortly after I had to change the radiator hose because the plastic cracked near the cap.  Maybe the heat has just gotten to these old parts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

How many miles on the vehicle? And I take it a 4 cyl motor? I'd be willing to bet odds that it is a leaking intake manifold gasket to the cylinder head.

Yeah I think same thing.  Don’t think steam heat would distort shape of the plastic intake. Gasket first.

KrazyKhemist

I am having the same issue with both the ETC and DTC (Off) lights coming on. Took to mechanic and they said it was a bad throttle body and replaced it.  Same issue kept happening and they got a new throttle body and replaced once again. Then same issue with lights and going into limp mode happened again this morning while letting my car warm up for my drive to work.

I am really at my wits end with this. The mechanics have performed multiple smoke tests and seen nothing.  Any suggestions what could be causing this?  Could it possibly be bad ignition coils that need replaced causing this issue?

Thanks for any help!

Lots of possibilities. Need to scan for codes as a start, even if mil light is not on. Which engine and how many miles ? If no codes show up; CPS or crank position sensor is the best guess. Not expensive fix, a wear item really.

Hey! My journey is 2.4L with 160,000 miles.  I replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor about 3 months ago. I did recently (about 2 months ago) have both hoses that run into the thermostat sheer off and shoot coolant everywhere inside. I have had to replace the same ignition coil (#3) 2 times within a 6 month period previously, one other has been replaced and the other 2 are the originals.  The last code I was told about was a vacuum leak notification but I wasn't given the actual number.  I am going to O'Reily on my lunch break and I will see what kind of code it says.

mileage?, eng size?,  miles on the speedo ?was it running okay before you changed the alt  ? did you double check your connections so many questions what is your skill level?

In cold weather, first start of the day, not always immediately, my ETC light starts blinking and runs like crap. I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect, ETC light goes out and runs fine the rest of the day. Does anyone have a clue, I don't. Throttle reset doesn't work.

just guessing you might need to clean or replace the throttle body unit

ETC has little plastic internal gears. They get worn and start to stick eventually. Hitachi makes the oem, RockA sells it, new better than reman stuff, usually.

Cleaning first like OP said, good starting point.  It  is a wear item and some point will need changing.

Lightning Bolt...Limp Mode...Traction Control Light...Help!

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

  • Add to quote

Today I was driving on the highway, and a Red Lightning Bolt started to flash on my dash, and the car immediately lost power while driving, and went into a limp mode from what I could tell. While limping on the side of the road, and red light still blinking, the Traction Control Light came on as well. I managed to get over enough, throw the hazards on and turn off the car. I waited a few minutes, and turned the car on, and things seemed fine. I proceeded to drive and BAM! It happened again! I managed to get myself turned around and stopped at a gas station. Turned the car off, and had a phone call with my Dad and Mom, about the issue. I then decided to come home, with problem still occuring. Every gear, I can gain maybe 7-8mph and 40mph being the highest in 5th gear. I managed to limp a little closer to home. My Parents called back, and said to shut the car off, and leave it alone for 5 min+ and then turn it back on. I did just that, and the problem seemed cured, and I drove home. Once home, I proceeded to reset the battery (like the nsrt4s) I let it sit for about 5 minutes unplugged and reconnected the battery. Started the car, and the problem is back without having to drive, and it is idling at 1.5k and sounds real horrible. So I unplugged the battery again. and came into the house, to come post this thread, and hopefully find out what may be the problem. The car is already out of warranty at 38,883 miles. Also, the only thing the car has is a K&N Drop in Filter (from like 35k ago) and a muffler delete (like 30k ago) So can you guys PLEASE help? Gabriel

sounds like a timing issue or a fuel problem i noticed you didnt let the fuel light go off before you started it why? and have you ran race fuel or and super man strength gas threw it? need more details man alot of us are gonna ask and say the same...

I'm having the same issue with my 07 nitro and I've been researching and mostly pointed toward tje direction of the throttle controll system.

sorry to hear man will watching for your fix.. Maybe realtune will comment and know what would cause this...

moparcrzy - this car has never seen race fuel. And as far as I can tell, the way the fuel light is, that is how it has always on and off when starting up. By looking at the manual, it says the lightning bolt, means Electronic Throttle Control. I dunno, what could have broken this, or what controls the ETC (I am guessing the PCM) But all in all, I have a broken car. I am out of work, thanks to my back surgery, I am still somewhat recovering from and out of warranty. Needless to say, I am in the slumps at this moment, and wish for an easy fix to occur. 3:51PM: Started the car again after sitting for 20+ min and still doing it...

after driving it a little, something I have noticed, is that car is stuck idling at 1.5krpm, and the boost gauge is reading -10vac consistently through each turn on and shut off. Could some have failed with the throttle body? Something Stuck? I am just looking for answers and all, would love some real feedback from realtune or whomever.

I really don't have any ideas for you, but have checked for all piping and solenoids are still connected?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

what are your mods? clamped?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Are you using different gas maybe?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

i would call the dealer and ask to speak to a tech and explain it maybe they can help

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Do you have a code reader? Also try posting a underhood video. There is a recent post where the gears for the throttle body was worn down.

i do not have a code reader, however when i click the key three times, it doesnt give any outright codes and just says --d0ne--. Nothing in my routine has changed at all. Using the same 91 gas I have always used and so on. The only thing I can think is something is wrong with the throttle body. I am going to try my best to take off the intake and look at the TB tomorrow. My local Dodge over here sucks ass and charges for everything, including trying to get help for this situation.

Does anyone on here by chance, have access, to a 2008 Dodge Caliber Complete Service Repair Manual? If so, could anyone tell me anything it lists under Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)? It might point me in the right direction.

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Glancing through the manual, not finding too much yet, but here is one thing I am sure you dont want to hear regarding one of the codes that could be set. Even though you have no codes this kinda sounds like what you are experiencing: ² Set Condition: Internal PCM failure. Vehicle may exhibit an extended cranking condition, limited performance, and a rough idle. One trip fault and the code will set within 5 seconds. ETC light is flashing.

So if that IS the issue, which is a strong possibility. It would obviously mean replacing the PCM. Now I know Dodge will cost me an arm and a leg for a stock one, however, would it be any cheaper to go the S1 PCM route? I know it seems like a copout to go faster, but I just want to get this fixed properly and pronto.

May not be any quicker getting S1, but couldnt be a better time to get one! Someone posted this on the other site http://www.authenticdodge.com/p2586/Caliber-SRT4-Stage-1-Turbo-Upgrade/product_info.html Could ask the dealer what it would cost to have a computer reflashed, would imagine its maybe only an hour labor or so, which would be cheaper and faster to get you back on the road.

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Depending on how much money you have right now, i would say put a stage 1 in there, and see what happens I doubt that the throttle body is bad, there are too few miles on the car, and i think it would be something else before that..

http://www.caliberforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14530

i have read that thread grimmey and no solution works from that thread. and when they refer to module, i am unsure if they mean pcm or throttle body...

sometimes it pops on me a couple time a week, then nothing for months. If it wasnt for my scan gauge I would be pissed like you. The only thing is I should still take mine to the dealer for a check out.

with your scan gauge are you able to reset the problem and go on your merry way or is it just come and go?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

that indeed sounds like an ETC issue. i would hook up to a Starscan tool and recalibrate your throttle.

you know, thats a very good point have you tried to recalibrate the throttle by the slowly pushing the pedal trick in thing? i know it probably wouldnt do anything, but couldnt hurt to try

Yeah I gave the Pedal Dance and chance, and it is a no go. I just called my Local dodge, and they said 79.95 plus tax for a diagnostic, since I am no longer under warranty. At least then, I could find out what is wrong. Lets just pray and hope the dealership does not come to me with an outrageous claim...

Its funny, the only time i had the problem with the idle dropping was with my k&n filter on. When i took it off to clean it, and put the stock airbox back, my idle was fine. After i cleaned the filter and put it back on, it kept getting worse, so i took it off.. Good to know man...

What Does The Throttle Control Light Mean And How To Fix It?

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: February 12, 2023

electric throttle light

Back in the day, your vehicle’s throttle body had a wire that connected to the pedal. When you pushed the pedal, you opened the throttle body, and you increased the amount of air that enters your engine. But as technologies have advanced, physical linkages have been replaced with sensors and actuators.

While this system allows for better air to fuel ratios for better fuel economy and engine performance, the tradeoff is that if a sensor or actuator breaks, you lose control of your throttle. That’s why vehicle manufacturers packed their vehicles full of sensors and an entire system to monitor your electronic throttle control.

But what does it mean when your throttle control light comes on, and what should you do? More importantly, is it safe to drive your vehicle, or do you need to take it straight to a repair shop? We’ll answer all those questions and more here.

What Does The Electronic Throttle Control Light (ETC) Mean?

The electronic throttle control (ETC) light indicates that there is an issue with the throttle system. The throttle system includes the throttle body, accelerator pedal, and wirings. The electronic throttle control system controls and monitors the position of the throttle.

While older vehicles use a cable that’s linked directly to the throttle body , most modern cars accomplish this feat through sensors and your vehicle’s ECM.

While there are plenty of advantages to this, if everything isn’t working the way it should, then you’re not going to accelerate the way you should.

Electronic Throttle Control Light Function

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Your electronic throttle control light monitors the throttle control system to ensure that everything works the way it should. When it’s not, the light turns on to let you know that there is a problem.

The only other time you should see the electronic throttle control light is when you turn on your vehicle. At this point, your vehicle is completing a system check, and when everything checks out, the light should turn off. However, if the light stays on, you have an underlying problem that you need to address.

The easiest way to narrow down where you need to look is to hook up an OBD2 reader. While these tools can’t tell you with 100 percent certainty what the problem is, they can give you a good place to start your search.

What Causes An Electronic Throttle Control Light To Come On?

The most common causes of an electronic throttle control light are a faulty throttle control sensor or a faulty throttle accelerator pedal position sensor. But while those are the most common causes of an electronic throttle light, they aren’t the only things that could be going on.

We’ve taken a deep dive into the three most common problems below.

1. Faulty Throttle Control Sensor

throttle body location

Just because your vehicle’s ECM tells the throttle to open a specific amount doesn’t mean that the ECM trusts that it will. It actually relies on the throttle control sensor to tell it how far the throttle has actually opened and makes fuel-to-air ratio adjustments based on that.

As every good mechanic knows, you need to trust but verify. This is exactly what your ECM is doing by listening to the throttle control sensor. So, when everything doesn’t come back the way it expects, it throws an electronic throttle control light so you can check out what’s going on.

In some throttle bodies, the sensor is not replaceable and you may have to replace the whole throttle body, which can be quite costly.

2. Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor

accelerator pedal position sensor location

There are a few different parts to your electronic throttle control system, and an integral one is the accelerator pedal position sensor . This sensor communicates with your vehicle’s ECM to let it know how fast you want to go.

From there, the ECM tells the throttle how much to open or close. But if the ECM can’t get an accurate reading from the pedal due to a faulty sensor, you’ll never get the acceleration you want. If the computer recognizes that something is wrong with the sensor, you’ll get an electronic throttle control light.

3. Stuck Throttle Body

dirty throttle body

It doesn’t matter if everything on the electric side of the house is working correctly if the physical throttle body is stuck. There are plenty of reasons that the throttle body can get stuck, but a common one is carbon build-up.

Take a look at your throttle body and ensure that it can easily open and close. If it can’t, see if you can remove any obstructions and try cleaning it with a high-quality carb cleaner. If that still doesn’t work, you might need to replace the throttle body.

Is It Safe To Drive With an Electronic Throttle Control Light?

It is not safe to drive with an electronic throttle control light. While you might be lucky and only have a drop in fuel efficiency or a slight drop in acceleration, the problem can quickly get worse if the sensor readings continue to go awry.

The throttle body controls how much air enters the engine, and if your vehicle’s ECM can’t keep accurate tabs on this, then it can quickly lead to an out-of-control engine. If you have an electronic throttle light that’s on, you can quickly damage your engine, which can lead to even more expensive repairs when you get it to a repair shop.

This is true even if you don’t notice significant drops in your throttle response or vehicle performance. That’s because the air to fuel ratio isn’t what it should be, which can lead to premature engine wear over time.

How much does it cost to fix the ETC light?

The cost to fix the ETC light will depend on the underlying cause of the light coming on. If it is a simple issue, like a dirty throttle body, then it may only cost a few dollars to fix. However, if there is a more serious problem, like a bad throttle body or throttle body sensor, it could cost between $100 and $800 to repair.

Is there a fuse for the electronic throttle control?

There isn’t a fuse specifically for the electronic throttle control in the majority of most modern cars, but there is a fuse for the engine control module. The engine control module is what controls the electronic throttle control, so if that fuse blows, then the electronic throttle control will no longer work.

How do I reset my ETC light?

To reset the ETC light, you must use an OBD2 scanner. However, in most cases you cannot simply reset the ETC light by clearing the fault code memory. You probably need to fix the problem that caused the warning light in the first place.

Why is my ETC light blinking?

If your electronic throttle control warning light is blinking, it indicates that there is an ongoing issue that needs immediate attention. Take your vehicle to a mechanic workshop or diagnose it yourself as soon as possible.

When the throttle control light comes on, it indicates a problem with the throttle control system. The throttle control system includes the accelerator pedal, throttle body, and all the parts in between.

While you might feel that everything is getting more complicated in modern vehicles, these complicated features have huge benefits. Not only do you get better fuel economy, but you get a more powerful and more responsive engine.

When your throttle control light comes on, the first thing you want to do is read the trouble codes with a diagnostic scanner . In most cases, the scanner will tell you exactly what is causing the warning light to come on.

So, while you might be cursing at the electronic throttle control light now, when you get everything back to working as it should, you’ll be glad you have it. And despite what the crusty mechanic at the shop might tell you, the old linkage systems used to act up from time to time too.

Dodge Ram Lightning Bolt Flashing [Red Symbol Meaning & Fix]

The dreadful red Lightning bolt flashing symbol followed by your Ram losing power is one of the most common problems on the Dodge Ram trucks especially the 3rd gen which runs from the year 2002 to 2008.

In this article, I am going to explain to you what this means, the main cause, and how to solve the problem.

Dodge Ram Red Lightning Symbol Meaning

Table of Contents

The short answer is that the red lightning bolt flashing on your Dodge Ram means that the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) module detected a fault in the system.

The most common cause of this problem is a faulty Throttle Body but there are other things that can cause this light to flash which I will discuss below.

Dodge Red Lightning Bolt Dash Light Causes

1. faulty throttle body:.

In most cases, the problem is caused by a faulty throttle body. This is part of your Dodge Ram that controls how much air goes into the engine. If this is not working properly, then your Dodge Ram will not run correctly and this can cause the ETC module to detect a fault.

2. Bad Throttle Position Sensor:

Another common cause of this problem is a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), which sends information to the ETC module so it knows what position your throttle is open at any given time.

This sensor is known to accumulate dirt over time on ram trucks and I would advise you to clean it before replacing it.

3. Dirty Connectors:

Dirty connectors can cause this problem, too. A dirty connector is a piece of wiring that connects two or more components together.

This happens when dirt and grime get into the connection and block electrical current from flowing through each wire. If this were to happen, then the ETC module would not get the information it needs to operate properly.

Signs of a Bad Throttle Body on a Dodge Ram

Now, that you know that the red lightning light is caused by a bad throttle body on your Dodge Ram, let’s take a look at other signs that you might be experiencing trouble with it.

Power Lose when Accelerating:

If you notice that your Dodge Ram is not accelerating as fast as it should be when you press down on the gas pedal, then this could be a sign of a bad throttle body.

If this problem persists over time, then you might want to consider having it checked out by a professional mechanic.

Rough Idling:

A bad throttle body can also cause your Dodge Ram to experience rough idling. This means that your engine will be running roughly and will not be as smooth as it normally is when you start up the truck.

If this happens, then you should definitely have it checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible.

How to Reset Red Lightning Bolt on a Ram Pick-up

To solve the issue permanently, I recommend having the Throttle body and sensors replaced.

From my personal experience, this is a relatively easy and straightforward repair that an experienced mechanic can do in just a few hours.

You may also want to consider having the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) replaced as well. This is a relatively inexpensive part, and it could solve many of your problems with rough idling and stalling, so you may want to have one installed as well.

If you’re looking for a mechanic to replace your Throttle Body and Sensors, I recommend going with a reputable auto repair shop.

A good mechanic will know what they are doing and they’ll be able to do the job right the first time, which is important because these repairs can be expensive if done poorly.

If you don’t have any mechanics in mind already, I recommend going straight to your dodge dealer and having them do the job for you.

The electronic throttle control light is the reason Dodge pickups are no longer the leader. This light has plagued me for 13 years and I have spent $48,000 on finding the problem but no go.. I finally replaced engine, turbo Injection Pump, Lift pump and every other thing including wire harnesses etc, etc, etc. Two weeks after spending $38,000 on this the ETC light goes back on and I lose all power. All the things you mentioned above are the main culprits. This was simply badly engineered and totally non functional. Dodge to this day, still has this on their truck and it’s worse than ever.

My dash board lights only goes off for like 10minutes and then comes back on permanently after turning off the engine and locking the car doors. this drains my battery

I got a warning light that I can’t find in my manual or on line. It looks like a screw in the side of the vehicle. Can you tell me what it means?

Hello Patricia, Are you sure the car and screw warning light is not a loose gas cap symbol?

I checked these on mine but did not affect car with large screw hovering.

I just got that light today…is it the gas cap

Put antifreeze in the car gauge says the oil temperature is rising the transmission fluid temperature is rising and the coolent temperature is rising and says 5470 engine hours what does this mean

Hi Wanda, How old is the existing antifreeze? If it’s several years old, it may require flushing, else there may be sludge build up resulting in the system getting blocked. Transmission systems can also make use of the car’s cooling system and can overheat if there’s a problem. Also check your char’s water pump. The engine hours is referring to how many hours your engine has been in operation over its lifetime.

Patricia I had the dame this last week and even the mechanic had never seen it I checked the gas cap, took if , screwed it in again, but no change. Had the lugs tightened on wheels though he said they were fine= zi have NO IDEA. It bothers me that it’s not in the manual

2014 Dodge Journey: 3 warning lights came on simultaneously. Oil which is full, tired which are filled to spec. and eve light. What causes this and how do I fix it?

Hi Tom. Rather than ‘eve light, did you mean ABS light? Sounds like sensor issues. I would concentrate on the oil light initially as this is the most serious and have your engine pressure checked. If it’s good, it may be the oil pressure sensor.

My 2009 Dodge Journey’s instrument panel completely lights up when shifting from 1st to 2nd. You can feel a slight jerk and click. Tranny works fine but the dashboard is completely lit up. I already reset the dashboard but it comes on immediately when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Round red light came on three times went out each time what is this red dot panel with rpm’s

Hi Yolanda. I think it’s the vehicle security warning light. Have you changed or disconnected the battery?

I have a 2009 Journey. Sporadically, the ESC light will come on, and the car starts running very rough….almost to the point of stalling. However, if I keep a steady flow of gas, it doesn’t stall on me. Do you know how the gas and ESC error light would be related causing the car to run so badly? Thank you!

Hi Amy, Part of the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system is to cut engine power and can also apply braking. This helps with traction (preventing wheel spin), oversteer and understeer. If the system is faulty, it could be engaging when it’s not supposed to and giving you the rough engine and problems accelerating. This could be something as simple as a wheel speed sensor that’s at fault, or the ESC module, steering angle sensor.

On my dashboard. Red light came on.and i can’t find the red light symbol.i have a 2010 dodge journey.i have look up the symbols on my phone and i can’t find that symbol.

Hi Loretta Can you describe the light?

I’m having a similar problem as Amy. Sometimes my ESC light will come on and it says OFF though. Basically ESC OFF it shows the image, but it says OFF. It happened today. I turned on the car and the light came on and I had to get in the interstate and I was going 70+MPH and whenever I would let my foot off the gas and the vehicle would stutter and feel like it wanted to stall. The MPH would begin to drop and I wasn’t able to increase by speed. It would drop to about 60 MPH and then I would be able to increase by speed again..I have a 2011 Journey.

I am having the same problem…did you ever figure out how to fix it??

2018 Dodge Journey check engine light and it woo t switch gears. It will jerk really hard then it won’t switch gears

I have a flashing “Dodge” symbol that flashes then remains on for a short time. The tipm has been replaced. Could it be a reset is needed?

What does red ‘Back’ light mean

what does it mean when the letters PSI come on?

On my 2010 Dodge Journey. The Eps light is staying on

My dodge journey yellow light has just come up. Although today I’ve had new tyres and rims fitted have you any idea as to why if so any help will be appreciated thanks

Hello Kelly, I assume you mean the tyre pressure warning light? The tyre pressure light coming on after having new tyres fitted is usually a sign that a sensor has not been fitted, not been fitted correctly or damaged during the tyre fitting service.

I have a stupid question! Do I turn on the slippery car symbol when I’m driving in the snow?

Hi Janie, No, don’t touch it, it will automatically be on already. If you press the button so that the slippery car symbol illuminates, you’ll be switching the system off. On most cars it’s called electronic stability control (ESC) or something similar. ESC comes on automatically each time you start the car.

If you happen to get stuck in snow and can’t get out, you might need to rock the car backwards and forwards. In this situation, you press the ESC button (slippery car symbol), or the traction control button to deactivate traction control. By leaving traction control on, it’ll stop or reduce wheel slip, but if you’re stuck in snow, you want wheel slip to help free your vehicle. Once you’re free from the snow, press the button again to switch on ESC.

Hello, I have a 2016 journey and I get the ETC and the ESC indicators on. Usually I pull over, turn off the car and wait a few seconds but now it’s happening more often. What is this and how can I fix it?

Hello, my ETC and my ESC have started to come on, more in the past 2 days. What should I do to fix this? I have changed the alternator and the battery and it still keeps coming on

Hello Al, The throttle sensor is quite a common fault with the Dodge Journey. The throttle body might need to be replaced.

My etc light came on and now the car isn’t starting what do i do? its not even turning its my moms car and she’s on vacation

Is the car turning over? Things to check are battery charge and connectors. Throttle body is often an issue, sometimes to do with the sensor.

Hello, I have a 2014 journey and I get the ETC and the ESC indicators on. Usually I pull over, turn off the car and wait a few seconds but now it’s happening more often. What is this and how can I fix it? Now it barely even starts half the time what is wrong?

Hi Angel, It’s usually to do with the throttle body. Usually throttle control sensor or position sensor, sometimes the wiring. An issue with the throttle may disable the ESC, so sorting out the throttle issue is likely to fix the ESC issue.

Battery died.Had it jumped.Cars great never any problem. We under reaio are buttone to push for Air, a C button, from, rear ans slippery traction. I have a 2011 journey with 131791 miles on it for the 1st time since owning it in the little center window it’s showing what gear I’m in p r d but it also has a round clock like light right next to the gear light what does that mean I have had nothing but problem’s with this piece of junk the Camara quit heated seats quit had to replace a heater core had to replace head gaskets battery altanator brakes every 1 1/2 years in front worse car ever owned some how front drive shaft got bent or something so the whole car,s vibration was so bad you could not drive the thing .

Hi Dean, Sounds to me like you need to get rid of ASAP. I’m afraid I’m not too sure. Looked into it and can’t find any info. All I can think is that it’s symbol of a reminder – maintenance / service? Hopefully someone else will know.

Hi, there. When I was driving my 2014 Dodge Journey on hyw feeling the car was shaking, I could see my arms were shaking, about half hour later sign on the middle screen looks like a double lined Red Cross while a Ding sound, and disappear soon. Then I got out the Hyw, the shaking was disappeared on 50km/h. Anyone know what’s the sign for? Just changed my tires at Costco three month ago.

I have a 2014, when I put it in reverse a over look of the vehicle comes up on the dashboard with a SERVICE light under it and a dinging sound comes on. This has been going on for awhile, the rear camera works fine and has not ever been damaged. Any ideas on if this is a normal thing or is it something more?

My 2012 journey has a small red polite and a exclamation icon red in colour be for it what does it mean can’t find a explanation any were it is on the rite round dash gauge thanks

Hello everyone while reversing today for my dodge Journey 2018, I noticed a sign came up on the reverse showing clean what does that mean

Hi Teddy, Could it be to do with the backup camera or ParkSense sensors that need cleaning? The ParkView camera is located on the rear of the vehicle above the rear license plate and the outer surface and the underside of the rear fascia/bumper require cleaning and kept clear of snow, ice, mud, dirt or other obstruction for the ParkSense sensors.

I have a 2015 diligence journey. Every now & then going downhill I get an ! Mark and a P. Both are in red circles. Mai

Hi Mai, I should have your vehicle braking system serviced. Always best to have anything to do with brake issues checked out right away. It is worth checking under the hood at your brake fluid levels, as this level will fall over time as brake pads wear low. Also keep an eye on brake pads, they require replacing after a while.

The ETC Light and the traction light lit up. What does this mean? Is it because my air tire pressure is low?

Hi Betsy, It’s unlikely to be related to tire pressure, but it’s best to keep tire pressures up to the recommended values as stated on the sticker inside the door jamb. This will improve stability and fuel consumption. The Dodge Journey does have issues with the throttle body, often needing replacement. This fault can trigger reduced engine power mode (limp home mode) and often systems such as traction control can be automatically deactivated as a result.

What is the small red P with a ! Red icon be for it mean on my 2012 dodge journey it is in the rite round dash gauge

Hi Doug, I’m not sure either I’m afraid. All I can think of is a problem with Park (P). If it would be parking brake related, it would be contained in a circle and parenthesis.

In 2014 dodge journey..the inside lights flashed on and off for 2 minutes while dash had a dinging sound..stopped for a minutes started again..lasted 15 minutes til I got home.. what’s this mean??

Hi Alicia, Is it a specific timed flashing or more of a sporadic flickering? There are some issues with Dodge Journey’s with flicker interior lights, or lights staying on which is related to bad wiring / short issues. A wire that controls lighting to the trunk is a common culprit.

Hit a large pothole and now the ads light along with other lights come on. Sometimes the lights will come on when turning on the ignition and other times it does not. I was told that this could be a wheel bearing problem or an ABS shortage anyone have any ideas.

Hi Eugene, Yes, as you say, wheel bearing is a possibility. There’s also a wheel speed sensor located at each wheel, these sensors are prone to damage and that could also be the issue. If you’re noticing any noise from the particular wheel that hit the pothole, humming noise, looseness in the steering, vibrations etc, this may also be a symptom of a damaged wheel bearing.

Hi I have a 2014 dodge journey and my engine light came on and hasn’t gone off I had a service last week and nothing was bought to my attention. We had a -1 degree morning and the car was frozen could this have an impact on this light coming on?

Hi Kelly, Yes the colder weather can impact on your car. Usually though, it’s the cold weather, triggering the engine light that’s making an already underlying problem worse, hence the light. There’s no way of knowing why the engine light is on other than having diagnostics. When the engine light comes on, you’ll typically have a fault code generated and stored. A diagnostic OBD II tool is used to scan for the codes and point you to where the fault is. You should be able to find an auto workshop where you’ll receive a free diagnostics check.

I had a Throttle Replacement a month ago, for my 2014 Dodge Journey with 67,000 miles at the Dealership. No w, a red sailboat light with a chime just came on. What could this mean. Please help, thank you!

Hi Dionne, A sailboat light? It’s not the engine coolant light is it? (see above)

Hi My Dodge Journey stx 2012 model 3,6 shows slippery Warning light, ABS, Brake and constantly feels like its going to cut but doesn’t cut at all. What it might be?

Hi Xolani, I should check your brake fluid level. A common cause for the ABS and slip indicator light to come on is a faulty wheel speed sensor. However, as your brake light is illuminated, you should have any fault codes read with a diagnostic scanner right away.

Lightning bolt on dash lit up..what is it?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

  • Add to quote

My truck didn't come with any manuals so I don't know what this is. My dash had the lightning bolt icon come on and the "check guages" light as well. Truck ran fine but I don't know what caused this. I turned off the truck for a couple of hours and then ran it again and after 20 mins it came back on again. Ive done a lot of mods so what could be the culprit?

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

The lightning bolt is your Electronic Throttle Control (ECT) Light. Been there....after a lot of searching and reading here's the things to check. - Battery connections (make sure there tight) including the where its grounded to the truck. - Mass Air Flow sensor (make sure its clean and plugged in all the way) - MAP sensor (make sure it clean) - Air filter (make sure its clean) I got this while deer hunting, do to really dusty conditions. Cleaned everything and found a connection that was loose.

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

ETC light can come on for many reasons. One of the most common is a guy that is two foot driving. Check for codes is the first thing to do P2299-brake Pedal Position / Accelerator Pedal Position Incompatible

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

On my 2007.5 it was my batteries. They also made me have a check engine. Changed em out and no issue's since.

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

Same here. Problem was solved when passenger side battery was replaced. Besides the lightning bolt other strange things were occurring, such as the oil change indicator coming on much too soon. I've since replaced the other battery and everything is working normally.

Thanks guys for the input. I did have a dead battery(s) last week. I charged them up and see to doing well. She ran great last night. Just today is when the light came on. I will check the connections and repost....thanks again.

Just to follow up. It looks as if my connections on my battery were a bit loose. I cranked them down and haven't had the light since. Thanks guys for the info....Jake

posted to soon. light is back on. Pulled up the code P2609. Any ideas?

P2609-intake Air Heater System Performance

I had that code last fall cleaned my map sensor and changed out both batteries for way better ones hav'nt had an issue since.

Its your batteries, they are weak, you posted that you charged them up, you probably have one that has a bad cell or something drawing the system down and when you crank it pulls system voltage down enough to trigger a code and some point, mine did this until I replaced both batteries.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll run down to Advance and have them check them out.

Went to Advance to do a battery check. Both batteries were good however one need to be charged some. No dead cells. Charged it up. Also, my positive battery cable was lose on the passenger side which was not the weak battery. Got it all tighten up. Hopefully, nothing will happen now on out.

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

I had the same problem, my volt meter was dropping so I got the truck home and went searching for an altenator. After I replaced it the truck ran great for a week and the lightning bolt came back on and the volt meter was dropping again. I just barley made it home this time before it died right out. I took the new altenator and the old one in and had them both bench tested and they both were putting out 14.3V. I then put the new one back in and started searching. Turned out the passanger side battery terminal was dirty and a bit loose. After cleaning and tightening up I have had no problem and it's been about a month now. Tough way to get a spare $300.00 altenator. But oh well live and learn. Hope this can save you some money. Start with the basics and go from there.

I notice that when I go to start my truck, if I wait for the glow plug light to go out that 9 out of 10 times I get the lightning bolt light coming on. If I don't wait, it doesn't come on. Evidently, something is reading wrong voltage. It doesn't affect my truck power wise or anything. I will look at those lines and make sure they are clean. I know they are tight.

Lightning bolt got to be that it was always coming on the past few days. My voltage on the guage was reading about 10 thus causing the check gauge light. Went to my batteries and noticed my one battery clamp was a bit nasty and corroded but on solid. I cleaned off the wire with baking soda and water and replaced the clamp. Now my voltage is up to where it should be and no lightning bolt any more. Simple $4 fix thank goodness. Hope this helps someone down the road. Was driving me crazy. Thanks for all the posts that helped me out....

2015 dodge journey lightning bolt on dash

You will need batteries. Don't try to replace just one or you will significantly reduce its likfe span. Replace both batteries get some corrosion inhibitor(red grease or paint) and coat any exposed parts upon replacement. Your current batteries are weak and the grid heater is probably a 80-100amp resistive load, followed by an extreme amperage starter draw. When computer sees it all it probably looks like 8 volts just after ignition. Change batteries.

I haven't had an issue since changing the clamp. The wire was loose in that bad clamp and was corroded. Batteries are good and strong. I had them tested.

Usain Bolt won the 100 meter dash at the world championships held in Moscow, beating out American Justin Gatlin, who finished second, and a field of the world’s best sprinters.

Bolt finished with a time of 9.77 seconds.

The race occurred in a rainstorm, and a photographer captured an amazing photo of the conclusion, as Bolt finished with a bolt of lightning flashing in the background.

Metaphor! Or, well, not a metaphor. Coincidence! A coincidence!

The story behind that amazing Usain Bolt lightning photo

They say lightning never strikes the same place twice. But it did on Sunday, when Agence France-Presse photographer Olivier Morin snapped what may become the iconic image of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Morin's photograph of Bolt just after he crossed the finish line of the 100-meter final at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow — and just as a lightning bolt could be seen above the stadium — was framed so perfectly, it appeared fake. After an NBC Sports editor tweeted the photo, some Twitter users questioned its authenticity.

@jmcdannald It's the Getty shot from the article on our website, so I trust it. — Nick Zaccardi (@nzaccardi) August 11, 2013

Morin told Yahoo News that while getting the threatening sky in the shot was intentional, the lightning was not. "I didn't see any lightning when I shot the hand camera — only when I opened the pictures on the laptop to edit five minutes after the race," Morin said. "I did not try to get the lightning in the pix. Getting Usain Bolt in the remote frame is difficult enough." Morin was set up facing the finish line. Fellow "infield" photographers can be seen in the background of his photo running to get in position to snap Bolt's victory lap. To capture Bolt and the bolt, the 47-year-old Milan-based photographer used five fixed remote cameras fired simultaneously from a hand camera. Two photos with lightning in the background were taken with a remote camera about 30 meters from the finish line. Bolt won the race in a steady rain , finishing in 9.77 seconds — his slowest time for that distance ever in a major final. American Justin Gatlin finished second, seven-hundredths of a second behind Bolt; fellow Jamaican Nesta Carter finished third.

Usain Bolt wins gold in 200 at worlds

Usain Bolt (JAM), center defeats Adam Gemili (GBR) and Churandy Martina (NED) to win the 200 in 19.66 at the IAAF World Championships at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Saturday.

  • Bolt runs world-leading time of 19.66 seconds
  • His celebration is subdued compared to past victories
  • American Rollins wins gold in women%27s hurdles

MOSCOW (AP) — When Usain Bolt means business, he is still all alone out there.

Bolt coasted to his third straight 200-meter world title Saturday, with the race basically wrapped as soon as he entered the finishing straight.

Jamaican teammate Warren Weir never got close to Bolt's world-leading mark of 19.66 seconds, but crossing .13 seconds later for silver still left him enough time to join him in a reggae dance to Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds."

"The energy was great tonight," Bolt said. "The crowd was into it."

Curtis Mitchell of the United States took bronze in 20.24 but was never in the hunt for gold.

Now Bolt will go for his fourth triple gold at a major championship when he joins the Jamaican team for the 4x100 relay Sunday.

"It should be even better," Bolt said.

PHOTOS: Track stars in action at worlds

The wealth of Jamaican sprinting is such that they might well sweep their American rivals in unprecedented fashion, after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clinched a similar 100-200 double and also has her final relay late on the closing day of the championships.

The opposition could hardly touch Bolt on Saturday, and once it was clear his right foot was OK after he dropped a starting block on it early in the week, everything was as good as gold.

Even his start was strong as he quickly gained a decisive edge. And then in the finishing straight, Bolt fully let loose his giant stride, the one that has dumbfounded rivals since he won three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

His seventh world title leaves him one shy of American greats Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson, who lead the overall gold medal standings in the 30-year history of the event. On Sunday, Bolt can pull alongside them, even though he is only 26.

His maturity showed Saturday, though, as the wild hot-dogging of the Beijing Games gave way to a sense of near-seriousness.

His Lightning Bolt stance came late, and besides the dance steps, his celebration was subdued.

"I got to face the fact that I am getting older so I have to try not getting injured during the season," Bolt said.

The only thing that never changes is the gold.

And that is what the Americans are missing, overtaken by Russia in the gold medal standings on two great performances Saturday.

While the Russians were beating the heavily favored U.S. women's 4x400 relay team, Svetlana Shkolina edged Brigetta Barrett in the high jump.

The Russian won by 1¼ inches, clearing 6 feet, 8 inches. Defending world champion Anna Chicherova, who is also the Olympic champion, had to settle for bronze at 6-5½.

"The crowd's roar for the 4x400 relay really put me up for my last attempt," Shkolina said.

Emma Green Tregaro of Sweden, who wore rainbow-colored fingernails during qualifying to show support for Russian gays and lesbians in the face of an anti-gay law, finished fifth in the final with red nails after track officials said the gesture may violate the meet's code of conduct.

"It was harder to not paint them in the rainbow than it was to choose to paint them," Green Tregaro said. "I'm surprised by the big reactions, but I'm happy about the big reaction because it's mostly been very positive."

With the closing day to come, Russia leads the gold medal standings with seven, ahead of the United States with six. In overall medals, the American team leads the host nation 20-15.

Bolt's medal pushed Jamaica into third place with four golds.

The United States got its only gold of the night from 21-year-old Brianna Rollins, who surged at the end of the 100 hurdles to edge Olympic champion Sally Pearson. Her winning time of 12.44 seconds beat the Australian by .06 seconds.

Early in the day, Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich became the first non-Kenyan since 2005 to win the men's marathon gold medal at worlds.

The Ugandan broke away from Boston Marathon champ Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia in the shaded park around Luhzniki Stadium to win his country's first men's world title in the 30-year history of the championships.

"I am so happy I won another gold medal for my country," Kiprotich said. "Now I am the Olympic and world champion."

Another Ethiopian, Tadese Tola, took bronze on a warm afternoon in the Russian capital.

Later in the evening, Ethiopian veteran Meseret Defar added the 5,000 world title to her Olympic gold medal with a strong finish.

Defar, the 2007 world champion, finished in 14:50.19, beating silver medalist Mercy Cherono of Kenya by 1.03 seconds.

Teammate Almaz Ayana did most of the heavy work for Defar but weakened near the end. She still won her first major championship medal in 14:51.33.
