30 Australian Made Camper Trailers (+ 33 Imported Brands)
Gone are the days where a camper trailer is a simple canvas tent sitting atop a box trailer. Over the years, camper trailers have evolved into very capable and well-equipped recreational vehicles, providing us with all of our adventurous needs, yet still being wrapped up in a lightweight and low-profile package.
The rise in availability of more affordable camper trailers has reduced the barrier to entry for many Australian families who are wanting to own a camper trailer, yet may not have had the funds to do so in the past.
Just like everything, China is able to replicate what the consumer wants, but at a fraction of the cost. However, with the cheaper cost, comes cheaper quality.
Many people are still opting for Australian made camper trailers purely for the superior quality and the extra bells and whistles that come with the locally-built trailers.
Australian made camper trailers are generally constructed using lighter materials, with higher-quality canvas, fittings and components. They are designed with true Aussie off-roading in mind.
Look for the ‘Australian Made, Australian Grown’ logo ↓
When looking for Australian made camper trailers, it’s important to read the company’s wording very carefully. Just because a business is 100% Australian owned and operated, that sheds no light on where the bulk of the trailers are actually manufactured.
In fact many businesses are falsely advertising Australian made camper trailers, even though the parts have been manufactured in China and shipped over as a flat pack. Simply being assembled in Australia is not enough to claim the 100% Australian Made title.
In this article you’ll find:
- Types of camper trailers
- List of Australian made camper trailers
- List of camper trailer brands that are partially or fully manufactured overseas
This camper trailer brands Australia list is solely focussed on Soft-floor, Hard-floor and Pop-up trailers. Hybrids are a category unto own and will be covered in a separate article.

100% Australian Made Camper Trailers
This Australian made camper trailers list only includes campers that are 100% manufactured within Australia (which is usually proudly displayed on their website).
If I couldn’t find a definitive answer as to where a camper trailer is made, or if it seems to be partially made overseas, I’ve added it to the ‘Made Overseas’ list down below.

Camper Trailer Brands Partially or Fully Manufactured Overseas
The following camper trailer brands list includes campers that are either partially or fully imported into Australia, then distributed.
Many camper trailer manufacturers will import the parts, then assemble the trailers here (sometimes with additional Australian parts). However, those products cannot stake a claim at being 100% Australian made camper trailers, so this is where they land.
Any camper trailer brands that don’t clearly advertise or state that they are Australian made in any way have also been added to this list. We can only assume that they’d be advertising it loudly and proudly if they were.
To further your research, check out my post on how much camper trailers weigh (including a comparison weight chart with averages).

Hi, loving the lists with my research to buy a tailer. Just a correction for your list. Offroad RV should be Offroad RVS (offroadrvs.com.au (not offroadrv.com)). Cheers Keith
Thanks, Keith, that’s been updated.

There was a time when Australia was a proud camper trailer building nation. When we didn’t have to write an article about Australian made camper trailers, because, apart from a few notable exceptions (mostly from South Africa), all our camper trailers were built locally. It’s really only been in the last decade that that’s changed.
Early Australian camper trailers were built in response to rising fuel costs and cars with smaller capacity engines – just because you drove a Fiat 500 in 1972 didn’t mean you weren’t interested in towing a trailer on summer holidays, after all. They were mostly predecessors to the Jayco-esque camper trailers which are, in essence, just small caravans. But the first Australian camper trailer is generally considered to have been built by R.J Rankin in 1928. It was basically just a trailer with a canvas canopy over it and bed inside. Designs evolved from there, though, and Australian builders were influenced by overseas designs from Europe and the USA. Notably, one of the four RV manufacturers in Australia that are more than 50 years old is Cub Campers, which is one of the most vocal advocates of Aussie manufacturing in the sector.
Today, there’s a shrinking, but passionate number of camper trailer manufacturers operating in Australia, but because they can’t compete on price with most of the imported product from China, they compete on quality and innovation. Australian made camper trailers are, as a general rule, amongst the best on the market and often the ones setting the trends. They are roughly divided into three camps: the Jayco-esque campers, the tent-trailers, which are mostly steel trailers with a canvas tent incorporated, and hybrid camper trailers, which look a lot like small caravans or teardrops, but are made by camper trailer manufacturers and usually very handy off-road .
By contrast, the factories in China building camper trailers for local importers continue to grow and, at the same time, quality continues to improve – driven by market demand and pressure from the Aussie builders and global markets. Every time I think I’ve got a handle on all the different camper trailer brands, I hear about another – while I was writing this, it was Hitched Campers and SUV Campers . Where 10 years ago there was almost no comparison between the quality of imported and local camper trailers, the lines are now much blurrier. Camper trailers also come in small quantities from South Africa and very small numbers from the USA.
The benefits of buying an Australian-made camper trailer go beyond the inherent quality manufacturers need to aspire to relevance in the market. Many Australian campers have innovations that no other campers have: from the literal staircase incorporated in Patriot Campers and the innovative (and patented) awning system in the Trackabout Campers to the simple genius of how Cub Campers’ forward fold camper opens and closes.
Those innovations have led to campers that are, as a rule, quick and easy to set-up and pack-up and very well suited to the Australian styles of travel, which often involves days of travel before finally setting up at a dream location.
Local builders often have more scope to customise their trailers to suit more personal needs, as they are usually built to order, rather than by the container-load months in advance. This isn’t just a boon for the end-consumer, as even importers of Chinese-built campers still find campers they’ve ordered missing features they wanted or with surprises they didn’t and so have to do some tinkering locally.
Buying Australian also ensures the quality of ancillary parts are high. Items like water tanks, suspension components, tyres, bearings and electrical components have often been weak points in Chinese-built campers, but quality in these areas have been points of pride amongst the Australian industry.
Australian-built campers are usually lighter than even the best equivalents from China. Part of that is a result of better engineering from Australian manufacturers and also a local understanding that lighter campers go further off-road (assuming, of course, there’s no reduction in strength). I’ve had importers tell me that they use heavier steel in their campers just to make sure they’re as strong as Aussie ones – the weight a reasonable trade-off for warranty problems down the track.
This weight is often also continued into the tent canvas. In general, campers with Australian-made canvas use a 275gsm Wax Converters Canvas – generally considered the best canvas in the world, local bias aside – whereas most imported campers use a heavier 450gsm canvas, again to make sure there won't be any problems with it down the track.
Of course, Australian-built campers are more expensive than imported ones, so feature for feature, you pay more. In the end, you have to be happy with that and satisfied that you aren’t just buying a list of components bolted together, but the pride and expertise of local manufacturers. These days it’s hard to find a bad Aussie camper trailer builder , but these are some of the best to buy.
07. Walkabout Campers
Cost: From $6000
Most caravanners are familiar with the Gall Boys and their wild adventures in northern Australia, but few realise one of them builds camper trailer tents from a small shed in Queensland. And they’re bloody good.
Simple, elegant and in great colours, the tents are top notch and the simple trailers are built around the corner. It’s a great, cheap option that’s all Aussie. However, Craig does only have capacity to make 45 a year, so you might have to wait a bit for yours .
06. Cub Campers Frontier
Cost: From $35,990
Although the forward-folding camper concept was invented in Australia, it took anyone here a long time to have a good crack at it.
The Cub Frontier is the only fully Australian-made forward folding camper which has the best tent set-up, plus simple and comfortable features in a light trailer. It suits travelling couples, although is one of the better forward-folds if you’re considering one for your family travels.
05. Jayco Eagle Outback
Cost: From $28,990
The Jayco range of pop-up camper trailers are conceivably the most popular in the country, especially with families. The Eagle has the best floorplan, though, with a lounge next to the larger bed so adults can retire to it for quiet conversation and port, while the kids slumber at the other end. Any of the Jayco camper range is a great family camper.
04. Track Tvan Canning
Cost: From $67,490
Still one of the most desirable camper trailers on the market , its space-age teardrop design, incredibly clever tent system and military proven suspension system are the pride of many outback travellers.
There are four models in the range, but the third-tier Canning seems the best value to me, with just the right amount of comfort, without going overboard. Suits the serious, long-term outback traveller.
03. Cub Brumby
Cost: $29,490
Cub is the longest standing camper trailer builder in Australia and the Brumby is one of its most iconic models. Simple, strong, small and light-weight, it’s enduringly easy to set up and pack up with just enough comfort for two. It’s the best value, Aussie-made rear-fold on the market.
02. Trackabout Explorer
Cost: From $30,500
Trackabout has always made an honest , hard-working camper trailer, but its most recent models have been really innovative. The Explorer is the smallest walk-up camper on the market – a walk-up camper is one with a walkway inside the trailer body at the end of the bed, so there’s no ladder to climb into bed – thanks to its folding bed design. It’s also super quick to set up and has a patented awing arm system. In touring form it’s great for travellers who move often or those who want a lightweight off-road camper trailer. In basecamp form it’s ideal for small families.
01. Patriot X1
Cost: $45,990
Patriot is like one of those kids at school who everyone loved and hated in equal measure because they were too good at everything.
The latest trailer, based in the top-of-the-line X1 , features a hard-topped roof, soft-floor tent which sets up in an instant. I’ve used the normal soft-floor tent version, which goes up in about two minutes.
Patriots are expedition-style trailers with great storage options, an excellent kitchen and innovative features and have one a stack of awards. Perfect for anyone, because their tent options are extensive.

The Top 6 Best Camper Trailers In Australia
Camper trailers are experiencing a renaissance in Australia. Everyone is ready to reclaim their adventurous roots and get out to explore Australia in all its glory—and we love it!
We’ve had a look at the top 6 best camper trailers in Australia so you can head out into the outback in comfort and style.
Before we take a look at what’s on offer, we need to ask ourselves…
What makes a good camper trailer?
It has awesome off-road abilities.
Australia has many harsh terrains that you won’t want to come across unless you’re in an off-road trailer. That's why many camper trailers on this list are some of the best off-road camper trailers on the market—we wouldn’t want you to be stuck out in the great outdoors involuntarily!
No need to worry though, most camper trailer manufacturers will explicitly tell you what their model’s off-road capability is.

It’s easy to setup
Investing in a camper trailer provides you and your family with a place to live while away from home. You want that space to be adequate to suffice the entire family without causing too many issues.
Additionally, you want it to be easy to set up, so you’re not fighting with everyone just to get your tent set up and running every time your family travels. This is meant to be a relaxing time away, which means making it as easy and comfortable as possible is a top priority of many Australian-made camper trailer companies.
If setting up always sparks arguments—perhaps consider pop-up camper trailers or camper trailers that have a rooftop tent—that way everyone's a happy camper!
It’s got lots and lots of storage space!
Even with small families, space is often hard-fought over, especially if everyone is bringing along a bag of their clothes and essentials. This means you need to have the best possible storage to ensure everyone can bring what they need without the risk of overcrowding your travel trailer or exceeding your safe camper trailer weight limit.
When you’re looking for a camper trailer, ensure you’re getting one that’s got adequate built-in storage space for all of you and your things.
It doesn’t require outrageous towing capacity
To transport a camper trailer around, you need to tow it. Therefore, you want to consider your camper trailer options to ensure it’s easy to tow in general. Ask the right questions, like if it’s durable, how high its ground clearance is, what towing capacity will your vehicle need and if it features an independent suspension.
So without further ado here are the best off-road camper trailers!
Cub Campers Frontier
- Easy to tow.
- One of the quickest set-ups of all the camper trailers.
- Quality materials, build quality and construction.
- Generic in its appearance with a wide profile.
The Cub Campers Frontier is one of the best forward-folding off-road camper trailers. This is one of the best set-ups of any camper trailer around and is extremely straightforward in its set-up. You’re getting comfort, style, and everything you need to enjoy a great trip in the wilds of Australia. One of its best features is the amount of space you’re able to get from the Cub Campers Frontier.
This camper trailer is well-built and is meant to last a long time. There’s a ton of effort that’s been put into this model to ensure it’s perfect, and they’ve nailed it! Overall, this is among the best off-road models around.
- Very off-road capable.
- Easy and quick to set up.
- User-friendly kitchen.
- Internal living space is limited.
The Patriot X1 is a top-of-the-line camper trailer that is built with some intense features. For starters, this camper trailer has a hard-topped roof which provides a comfortable space for a soft-floor tent. In addition, you can set this unit up in minutes, so it’s an easy process.
These expedition-style trailers are equipped with ample storage and even have a great spacious kitchen setup. This is one of the best camper trailers on the market thanks to its winning design, consideration of space, durability, and a host of other incredible features.
Walkabout Campers
- Affordable.
- A decent amount of storage space is provided.
- Sleeping space is decent for a small family or a couple.
- It’s not the greatest-looking camper trailer.
Not everyone has money to burn on some of these pricier camper trailer offers. However, there’s an alternative that doesn’t make major concessions to quality. The Walkabout Camper is a somewhat elegant model, even though it's a budget model. The tents are high-quality and provide enough space for a small family.
Overall, it’s not the perfect camper trailer to exist, but it’s still a great model, thanks to some clever thinking. With bright colours, ample storage room, and a decent amount of coverage, this is a camper that’s going to be perfect for the family or couple on a budget.
Austrack Plenty X Double Fold Camper Trailer
- Easy to set up.
- Ensuite private room with a port-a-loo.
- Great kitchen setup.
Including the word plenty in its name was a smart move because there are plenty more features to love with this iconic camper trailer. It’s massive and provides an adequate living space that can fit the whole family comfortably and is especially welcoming for taller folks. Forget fitting just two adults—this off-road camper trailer will be everything you need to sleep a family of six with ease!
This Aussie build camper trailer has a wonderful gas-plumbed kitchen that slides out and has a tap, drawers, a multi-burner stove, and more! Finally, to top it all off, there’s even a dual-zone fridge and freezer, water tanks, and an ensuite privacy room, including a port-a-loo.
Swag Campers King Kimberley Generation 6
- Large size with ample space.
- Quality materials and construction.
If audacious were a camper trailer, it would be the Swag Campers King Kimberley Generation 6. This is an intense model that is a premium for families. It’s got just about everything you’d need in a camper trailer to satisfy everyone’s needs of a home away from home. You can also install solar power panels or an extra roof rack on the roof for rooftop tents.
The trailer features a large amount of space to sleep, eat, store items, and more. You can sleep six comfortably in this unit while having a king-sized bed. The lounge converts into another bedroom, giving you some privacy. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped. It features a large high-sided sealed pantry box, gas-plumbed 4-burner cooktop, sinks, fire extinguisher, etc. There's also a freshwater tank with a portable gas hot water system. Overall, this camper trailer goes above and beyond the call of duty.
Black Series Dominator
- Independent suspension and dual shock absorbers.
- Tackles numerous types of terrain.
- Easy to haul.
- Customer service isn’t great.
Despite the intense name, the Black Series Dominator is a classy setup. Featuring a slide-out kitchen, an internal dining area, and a small room for two, it’s great for a couple on the go!
Of course, it can be used for families assuming other members of the family don’t mind some old-fashioned camping. You can also convert the table and sofa into a second room, meaning sleeping four is possible.
Additional features include adjustable independent suspension, a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, and more. Overall, it’s a small yet well-priced unit that can make any couple or small family extremely comfortable out on the beaten path.
Jayco Eagle Outback
- Decent off-road performance.
- Easy to tow.
- Spacious and well laid out.
- Expensive considering the final product.
This is an Aussie favourite when it comes to camper trailers. The Jayco Eagle Outback is part of the great Jayco range and features one of the best floor plans of all the models previously mentioned.
Because space has been utilised the right way. You’ve got a large bedroom that can fit a queen size bed and a living room that can be converted into another bedroom easily.
Families will find immense use for this camper trailer as it’s spacious with tons of storage room. It’s easy to set up and provides a comfortable living situation while you’re off the beaten track. This is a great camper trailer, and it’s popular for a reason. It’s no surprise why that’s the case!

What is the best camper trailer brand?
This is purely an opinion, and our opinion is that Black Series is by far one of the most reliable camper trailer brands out there. The camper trailers produced by Black Series are of high quality, have a classy look to them, and utilise space extremely well. They’re also able to handle on and off-road conditions well.
What is the most reliable RV trailer?
The Patriot X1 is one of the most reliable RV trailers around. The Patriot X1 is made using durable and tough materials with a winning construction. These trailers can handle tough terrain and weather conditions with ease. They’re also extremely comfortable while being relatively inexpensive in comparison to some of the high-end options.
What campers last the longest?
Campers that use fibreglass usually last longer than other campers out there. This is because they can handle rough conditions far more than an aluminium trailer. In addition, the perfect blend of soft and durable construction makes them perfect for on and off-road camping trips .
What is the best off-road camper trailer?
Our personal opinion puts the Swag Campers King Kimberley Generation 6 as the best off-road camper trailer . Not only is it fancy, large, and ready to make comfort a guarantee. The Swag Campers King Kimberley Generation 6 is also great for handling off-road driving.
What is the best budget camper trailer?
The Walkabout Campers are among the cheapest camper trailers out there. While they’re affordable, that doesn't mean they’re bad quality. They’re not as fancy or as big as some other options out there. Still, overall they’re extremely affordable and well worth the money.

CAMPING – CAMPER TRAILERS
In this section we assess the different camping options available. Your chosen style of camping can affect what vehicle you purchase and what other gear you need. We can’t keep up with the myriad brands and models now available, so we’ve chosen representative trailers.
Ambush Camper
The Ambush Camper is a unique, power-erecting, rear-fold camper trailer that’s designed to carry motorcycles or a quad bike, while providing tent accommodation for singles, couples or families.
Cub’s classy cross-over vans
After more than two years of development, Cub Campers has released C16, L16 and H16 off-road ‘caravans’.

Blaze Trailers is a trailing equipment arm initiative, reflecting three generations of family involvement.
Cub Drifter double-fold camper trailer
Building on the original Drifter’s success and drawing inspiration from market demands for double-fold camper trailers, Cub Campers has released the Drifter II. The Cub Drifter six-berth family off-roader was launched in the 1970s and continues to evolve today. The GT version was launched in 2023.
ARB enters the camper trailer market

Pioneer Verve
Pioneer Campers was taken over by Track Trailer – makers of the famous Tvan – in 2020. The Verve is a derivative of the original 2015 Pioneer Mitchell cross-over van, with input from Track’s engineering

This South Australian manufacturer produces three levels of camper trailer specifications: tent-tops for your box trailer; the Commando camper trailer and the top-shelf Conquest.
Upgraded Cub Escape
Cub’s Escape has been one of its staple rear-fold campers since 2016. It’s a popular off-road Cub model for couples or families wanting more room to move and has been significantly upgraded.
Kerfton Fouray Camper
In a world of mainly look-alike camper trailers, it’s always great to see a different design and the Melbourne-made Kerfton Camper is certainly that.
Ezytrail Parkes 15 Mk2
At OTA we purposely avoid testing caravans, because we reckon there are enough people doing that. However, we do like to check out the cross-over van market, typified at the top end by pop-top, single-axle units like Ezytrail’s Parkes Mk2.
Cub Frontier Forward Fold camper
Forward-fold campers occupy less ground space and provide a dinette area – just like a small caravan. Cub’s model is truly off-road compatible as well.
Cub Scout forward-fold camper trailer
The Cub Scout is one of the lightest forward-fold camper trailers on the market and as close to 100-percent Australian-made as you can get, Cub claims.
Stockman Rover camper trailer
Stockman has been producing well-engineered, Australian-designed, compact Pod campers for more than 15 years. The company’s latest product offers rapid set-up and pack-away.
BRS Pursuit 2020 Platinum Limited edition model
Camperact plans to unveil the latest product from BRS Offroad at the Canberra Caravan, Camping and Lifestyle Expo on the 25th October 2019. This is a limited edition release from BRS Offroad that extends the Pursuit Platinum range.
Track Trailer T4 crossover camper trailer
The T4 replaced the Topaz cross-over camper trailer in early 2019. It’s a beautifully Australian designed and built unit with a customisable interior, but this individuality comes at a price.
BRS Off Road Sherpa
The BRS Sherpa is a great eye-catcher, but at around sixty grand is at the top end of the ‘teardrop’ camper trailer market. We took one away for a test.
Track Trailer Mate
Track Trailer’s Mate is essentially a Track camper, without the teardrop camper bodywork on top. Instead, the Mate has a box-trailer tub, with an optional pull-out storage drawer, customisable flat panels and storage spaces.
Jayco’s CrossTrak hybrid camper
Jayco’s 2019 CrossTrak hybrid camper is aimed at off-roading couples, with low ball weight and tare weight, yet generous payload.
Jayco JTrak camper trailer
Australia’s number one caravan and RV manufacturer with over 43 years’ experience, Jayco, has launched its inaugural tent-trailer range: JTrak.
Stoney Creek Campers
This brand has been around for a few years now and seems to have a loyal following. The model range covers the whole camper trailer spectrum, from soft-floor shorty to forward-fold models.
Pod Campers
The Pod Camper range is one of the few offerings in the Australian camper tailer marketplace that is designed specifically for lightweight camping. Many camper trailers are too heavy and have far too much ball weight for towing by SUVs and small 4WD wagons.
Air Opus camper trailer
Melbourne-based Opus Camper Trailers has released a joint China-UK-Australian product that is said to be the world’s first self-inflating camper. The canvas roof section is fitted with ‘air beams’ that are electric-pump inflated, to form a camper trailer tent, without the need for booms and poles.
Echo Kavango
Designed, engineered and extensively tested in Southern Africa the crossover Kavango incorporates Australian componentry that has been tested here – notably independent coil-spring suspension.
Pioneer Mitchell
Some hybrid and crossover camper trailers make the mistake of being too bulky to fit on many bush tracks, but the Pioneer Mitchell crams a lot of features into a small package.
Rhinomax Discovery Hybrid
The Discovery Hybrid is a 4.3-metre (14ft) pop-top camper that is designed to offer the benefits of a caravan with the agility of a camper trailer.
Camper trailer for the mobility-challenged
Outback Travel Australia is proud to be associated with a venture to design and construct a camper trailer that’s purpose-built for wheelchair people. The first such product is now doing sterling service for Jol Fleming and his crew,
Wedgetail Camper Trailer
This company is well known for its high-quality slide-on campers, but the latest release is a Wedgetail factory-designed and built trailer that can mount any of the Wedgetail slide-on variants.
Ultimate Xplor
The Ultimate approach to camper trailer design was unique and the brand had a loyal band of followers, before the company was placed in liquidation in October 2018. The OTA Team has put one through a long-term evaluation.
Quokka Camper with ‘toy’ storage
Although the 2014 Quokka is dimensioned like a camper trailer and weighs about the same, it has ample interior space and payload capacity to carry two dirt bikes.
Trayon TMO Gen III
Trayon is best known for its tough but lightweight slide-on campers and the company also uses its slide-on as the basis for a modular camper trailer. It features one of the best suspension designs in the market.
Pioneer Campers
Pioneer Campers is part of the giant Actco-Pickering Group that also makes TSB service bodies for working 4WDs. This fabrication specialist employs the latest CAD-CAM design software and up to date metal cutting and forming tools, giving Pioneer a head start on less equipped camper trailer makers.
Patriot X1 camper trailer
The Patriot X1 camper combines a galvanised steel chassis with aluminium body panels and a roof-top tent, for a dry weight from 700kg, making it one of the lightest campers in the marketplace.
Camel Campers’ Bushman Expedition
The Expedition is Camel’s top model and is one of the best soft-floor camper trailers in the market. The trailer is Australian-made in Brisbane and comes with a leading five-year warranty.
Mountain Trail EDX hard-floor camper
A hard-floor camper keeps the main living area out of the dust and mud, but it can be a business packing a hard-floor camper away when it’s time to move on. Mountain Trail has solved the problem with electric opening and closing, letting one person do the job.
Conqueror UEV-490
Conqueror has made a name for itself as the producer of tough, steel campers that can take a bush hammering. The UEV-490 Evolution is the company’s top-shelf model.
Vista RV campers in close up
Vista RV campers are ‘crossover’ designs that blend camper trailer and off road caravan characteristics. These revolutionary vehicles are built in Melbourne, with a very high degree of Australian content. We’ve also tested one in severe outback conditions.
Cub Supavan Stockman
Cub pioneered the flip-top, hard-floor camper in this country and has expanded its range to suit virtually all budgets. The new Supavan Stockman is top of the line and comes with all the bells and whistles you’d want in a camper trailer.
Complete Campsite Fraser
Complete Campsite’s hard-floors are available across a broad price range and the Fraser sits towards the top end, with a RRP of $49,450. That’s a fair amount of cash, but the tag includes all the bells and whistles: there’s hardly an option list necessary.
Conqueror UEV-345
Conqueror has managed to pack an enormous amount of storage space into the UEV-345’s three-metre body length. It replaces the previous UEV-360 and promises good family camping.
The fourth generation Tvan was launched in 2016 – the 18th year of manufacture of this revolutionary camper.
MDC Walk-Through
Market Direct Campers arrived on the scene in a similar way to that of other low-priced camper trailer importers, but MDC has developed new models and incorporated more local kit.
Kimberley Kamper Platinum
The highest-specified camper trailer in Outback Travel Australia’s Camper Trailer Torture Test was Kimberley’s Kamper Platinum edition and it also carried the highest price tag, with a RRP of $50,660. We lived with the Platinum model for a month and assessed whether it was worth the asking price.
Cub popularised the flip-over, hard-floor camper design and now has a host of imitators. The Brumby is a true go-anywhere camper, as our testing has shown.
Challenge Meridian
Challenge soft-floor campers are built around a basic trailer platform, to which a long list of equipment and options can be added, so it’s possible to customise your trailer to best suit your needs.
Camper Trailer Torture Test
We started organising the OTA Camper Trailer Torture Test almost a year before and we chose a variety of off-road camper trailers for the final six. We towed with two Pajeros, two Challengers and two Tritons.

EXPLORE THE COUNTRY
With the perfect family camper trailer.
Sculpted to stand out, Kerfton has developed a design that brings a new level of form and finish to the camper trailer industry.
The exterior delivers automotive styling combined with off road ruggedness. The only camper trailer that complements the look of modern vehicles. A Kerfton looks great whether its parked in your driveway or pounding the corrugations of an outback highway.
The high level of finish continues on the inside with a clean and uncluttered interior living space. The cupboards have a luxurious high gloss finish and flush fitting handles. Which looks great and is easy to clean.
The kitchen and fridge carrier are a distinctive combination of stainless steel and black finish.
The kitchen pantry is the perfect spot for a coffee maker.
CONVENIENCE
Ever felt the gaze of others as you arrive at a busy camping area? Onlookers watch as you select your spot and start unpacking. But there’s no need to worry with a Kerfton because setting up is so simple that you will look like pro every time.
In a Kerfton you can be setup for an overnight stay in minutes. This includes bedding for the whole family with no need for “kids rooms”, stretcher beds or inflatable mattresses. Bedding stays made-up when the camper is folded.
A Kerfton can be setup on any ground surface. Its fully self supporting which means there is no need to drive in tent pegs or position poles on the ground. Overnight stops on long journeys are easier when any spot is a potential camping spot.
The kitchen and fridge are accessible without erecting the tent. If you arrive late at camp, one person can start preparing dinner as another unfolds the living area.
The kitchen is ready for use as soon as its moved into position. It is permanently plumbed with hot and cold water and gas. So, there's no hoses to connect and nothing to be forgotten and lost at the previous camp spot.
Every Kerfton comes with a large table and bench seats, perfect for those kids not yet able to eat from a plate on their lap.
These are accessible as soon as the tailgate is opened making them perfect for roadside lunch stops.
The stainless steel sink is removable so you can drain the dishwater away from the camp spot without needing a bucket.
Storage space in a Kerfton is more than ample for extended camping. There are six interior cupboards and two drawers; the kitchen includes a large and small drawer and an open pantry area.
The fridge carrier accommodates fridges up to 78lts. The front storage boot is big enough to fit a portable bbq (e.g. Webber Baby Q Premium), a chemical toilet and all your other camping gear. The top of the boot can also be used for external storage.

Nothings as important as a good night’s sleep.
The Kerfton has a full queen sized master bed and two large single beds.
The whole family sleeps in style, in comfort, in safety, inside. The perfect family camper.
The size of the trailer was designed around the queen master bed. Being an Australian standard size, all your linen from home fits perfectly.
The single beds are the ideal size for sleeping bags.
All beds are inside in the trailer, away from the creepy crawlies which is great for those families with younger children.
The two single beds are separated which means no fighting between kids at bedtime. In fact, your children will probably love having their own personal space.
For bigger families the single beds are long enough to top-and-tail smaller children.
The heater is great for making the interior more comfortable on those cold evenings and early mornings if you don't have a roaring campfire outside.
Interior space within a Kerfton is larger than many hard floor trailers on the market. There's also plenty of interior height for standing up while getting changed.
The table can also be used inside making an interior meals area. Or a great spot for that board game before the kids are off to bed.
The entry steps are comfortable and easy to use. With a full height door there's no need to duck down when entering the tent. A huge benefit when you might be in and out dozens of times a day.
The tread height and spacing of the steps were designed using domestic staircase standards which is why the're so natural to use.

Tough As Nails: Australian Overland Trailer Hits U.S. Market

Tighten the lug nuts and fill the jerry cans, ’cause the Aussies’ favorite camping trailer is now available in ‘Murica.
If your idea of a camping vacation involves an engine snorkel, or if you think near-vertical rock faces look like parking spaces, this, my unhinged friend, is the trailer for you.
Voted Camper Trailer Australia Magazine’s camper trailer of the year four years running, Patriot Campers made its U.S. launch last week. And that’s good news for overlanders.
Patriot Campers America: Exploration Outfitters
Oklahoma’s Exploration Outfitters became the official North American distributor of Patriot Campers. Previously, Patriot pull-behinds were only sold in Australia.
Patriot Camper: The 'Worst-Case-Scenario' Mobile
Being stranded in the jungle would be a bummer, but if you were driving around in this, it would definitely be less of a bummer, and you probably wouldn't get stranded at all. Read more…
With the launch, U.S. customers can order two of the brand’s trailers, the X1 and smaller X2. Sadly, Patriot’s overland trucks (see above) are still an ocean away.
Patriot Campers X1
The flagship trailer in the Patriot stable, the X1 offers the most space and standard features within the brand.
For living: A pop-up awning and tent contain a lofted king-size fold-out mattress. Integrated tent poles pitch the bug screen and canvas tent walls. Plus, the awning and walls that encase the kitchen and storage area feature LED lighting for moving around at night.
There’s no bathroom, but the X1 does have an outboard hot-water shower. And the hidewaway kitchen is comprehensive: Pull out trays reveal a 5.7ft.³ fridge, two-burner gas stove, kitchen sink, stainless steel workspace, cutlery drawers, and wet storage.
There’s also a front-box “man cave” that includes gas bottle holders, fire extinguisher, high-lift jack, utility shelf, and a swing-out gas barbeque. And, scattered around the sides and rear of the trailer, Patriot touts 2,000 liters of storage space.
For driving: Independent dual coil shocks, a 40-degree departure angle, and nearly 19 inches of ground clearance mean this trailer can go over—or through—serious off-road.
Plus, it can carry up to 1,200 pounds of gear and equipment—two-thirds its own weight. Despite being rugged, a full monocoque aluminum body keeps the total weight under a ton.
Once parked, the adjustable air suspension lowers the X1 from drive (crush) mode to camp mode. And the whole shebang draws power off of two 120-Ah batteries with solar-compatible charging.
The X1 starts at $32,490 .
Patriot Campers X2
For thriftier overlanders, the X2 offers a smaller, scaled-down version of the X1. It’s designed more for weekend excursions, hauling gear instead of housing a family, and being less of a burden on the budget.
For living: Unlike the X1, there’s no awning standard. Instead, the deck fits various aftermarket roof-top tents, or it can be used to carry watercrafts, bikes, and/or tents.
The gas stove is standard, but hot water and shower are optional add-ons.
As a result, the X2 weighs 1,500 pounds, almost 400 pounds less than the X1. So it’s a better fit for a Jeep Wrangler than it is a Humvee.
For driving: The X2 remains capable despite its smaller stature. It sports 18 inches of ground clearance, a 35-degree departure angle, and independent coil suspension.
Exploration Outfitters has the X2 starting just under $21,000 .
Patriot Campers offer a lot of versatility and capability in a relatively lightweight, compact package. Its reputation translates to a hefty price tag. But if you can afford it these make for a stout off-road camping companion.
Especially since it’s no longer a world away.

13 Best Travel Trailers for Road Trips and Camping
Hit the open road and camp in comfort with the best travel trailers.
Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.
With so many brands, sizes, and amenities to choose from, it can be difficult to know which travel trailer is right for your next adventure in the great outdoors . Paige Bouma, executive vice president of sales and operations of Trader Interactive, knows a thing or two about RV travel. She has been taking RV vacations with her family for years, often traveling for 30 weekends a year. According to Bouma, towable RVs (like travel trailers) are great for camping , and there are a number of choices to consider. "Families looking to experience the great outdoors have several choices when it comes to trailers they can tow behind their car, SUV, or pickup," she said. "The traditional travel trailer comes in a variety of lengths and weights, and provides a multitude of amenities and a sleeping capacity for any size family to go camping."
With this in mind, we've rounded up 13 of the best travel trailers so you can plan your next road trip . Whether you're a first-timer looking for tips to get started or a frequent traveler trying to decide on your next RV rental , this list includes fan favorites like Airstream, Winnebago, and Jayco travel trailers, ranging from luxury vehicles to small and lightweight campers.
1. Airstream Classic Smart Trailer
Airstream travel trailers are among the most luxurious, spacious, and advanced towable RVs. They say not to mess with a good thing, but Airstream's new and improved Classic Travel Trailer is an exception. This elegant and roomy travel trailer is best for long trips, with lots of space and innovative amenities, like a heated bathroom and handcrafted cabinetry. Now, this iconic trailer has smart-control technology, allowing you to adjust the lights, awning, and air-conditioning as well as monitor propane, battery, and tank levels from your phone. This trailer can be between 30 and 33 feet long and can sleep up to five people with four different floor plans. Airstream is currently working on more improvements for future RVs, including off-road capabilities and advanced electric vehicle compatibility.
2. Winnebago Micro Minnie
Winnebago travel trailers are beloved in the RV world, and the Winnebago Micro Minnie is one of their most popular options, even winning the RV News Top Lightweight Towable Trailers Award in 2021. This compact, seven-foot-wide trailer offers a number of floor plans to choose from, with features like a spacious kitchen with a sink, a double-door refrigerator, a microwave, and a cooktop.
