Austrian Airlines’ business class product varies depending on which aircraft you’re flying. Simply put, the Boeing 767-300 has a better cabin configuration (1-2-1) than the Boeing 777-200 which is more crowded with alternating rows of 1-2-1 and 2-2-2 seating.

All of Austrian’s business class seats recline to a fully flat position, but the seats on the 767 are slightly wider than those on the 777, and you’ll have direct aisle access at every seat on that aircraft. If you have a choice between the 2 aircraft types, we’d definitely recommend the 767.

These seats are forward-facing and staggered with 21 inches of width, 60 inches of pitch, and 78 inches of bed length. Each seat also features simple controls, a large in-flight entertainment screen, and an arm table.

This seat type doesn’t provide the most privacy, but there is the award-winning DO & CO catering service, which happens to be headquartered in Austria.

Austrian’s business class has become known for great service and food, while it offers a decent business class seat and amenities.

How To Fly Austrian Airlines Business Class Using Points

Booking Austrian Airlines business class is easy. If you search for award space around 6 to 7 months before departure, you’ll notice plenty of award availability throughout the schedule.

As a general rule, Austrian Airlines doesn’t make award space available more than ~210 days before departure. No need to worry, though. Searching for availability 30 to 60 or 90 to 210 days before departure should yield successful results.

Aeroplan doesn’t pass on any fuel surcharges . And since all available flights between the U.S. and Vienna fall within the 4,001 to 6,000-mile bracket, you’ll pay the prices in bold above.

This program also has a unique benefit that allows you to add a stopover on a one-way flight if you’ve found award availability for each segment for just 5,000 extra points.

For example, if you wanted to fly from New York to Cape Town with a stopover in Vienna, you’ll calculate the sum of the distance of the 2 flights, find the appropriate distance bracket and pricing, and add 5,000 points to the price.

In this case, the nonstop flight from New York to Vienna spans 4,240 miles of flight distance, while the flight from Vienna to Cape Town is 5,650 miles in flight distance, which totals 9,890 miles.

This falls under the 8,001+ miles bracket, which costs 100,000 points in business class. Just add 5,000 points to that amount, search for award space separately, and call Aeroplan to book the ticket.

What makes United MileagePlus particularly attractive is its absence of fuel surcharges , a simplistic booking interface, and the ability to earn miles quickly.

Ultimate Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly, while Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1.1 ratio in around 3 business days. For every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points that you transfer to United, you’ll earn a bonus of 5,500 United miles.

One of the best ways to earn United miles is to sign up for any of Chase’s co-branded United credit cards , all of which earn miles directly and offer benefits with the airline.

Asiana Club is Asiana Airlines’ frequent flyer program. As you’ll see in the table below, the mileage prices are hard to believe — in a good way!

Unfortunately, these prices come with a caveat: you’ll pay for every penny of fuel surcharges , which cuts into the value proposition immensely.

To make matters more difficult, Asiana Club doesn’t have any 1:1 transfer partnerships, making these miles pretty difficult to earn.

Lastly, you’ll need to pick up the phone to book any partner flights with Asiana Club — here are the complete steps to do so:

• Browse on United.com to find Austrian Airlines availability.
• Write down your flight details, call Asiana Club at 800-227-4262 and inform the agent that you’d like to book a mileage reward flight on Star Alliance partner Austrian Airlines.
• Provide the agent with your itinerary details, spend your Asiana miles, and provide a credit card to pay for the taxes and fees.

Hot Tip: We recommend booking one-way tickets on Asiana Club , even if you want to travel round-trip, because you’ll save a significant amount on fuel surcharges by booking 2 one-way tickets, as opposed to 1 round-trip ticket ($1,095 vs. $1,506 in total taxes and fees).

Earning Asiana Miles

Earning Asiana miles is much more difficult than the other options discussed here because it has just 1 transfer partner: Marriott Bonvoy.

Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to Asiana, and you’ll get a bonus of 5,000 Asiana miles when you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at once. Transfers take around 4 business days to complete.

The last major frequent flyer program we’ll discuss in detail is ANA Mileage Club . While the mileage prices are extremely attractive and the number of ways to earn ANA miles is relatively abundant, you’ll be liable for all taxes and fees aboard Austrian Airlines.

This amounts to a whopping $1,500+ on round-trip flights (one-way award flights are not allowed).

Even the technique of booking 2 one-way award flights to save on taxes and fees doesn’t apply here because ANA doesn’t allow one-way flights.

Austrian Airlines business class isn’t quite as aspirational as Emirates first class or Lufthansa first class ; but it’s still easy to get fantastic value with your points.

One benefit of booking Austrian Airlines business class is that you can use virtually any transferable currency available to book this flight.

However, Austrian Airlines levies massive fuel surcharges on flights between the U.S. and Vienna — upwards of $700 each way — so it’s generally a good idea to accumulate miles in a program that doesn’t pass on these fuel surcharges, like Avianca LifeMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, and United MileagePlus. As a general rule of thumb, you can search for Austrian Airlines flights up to 7 months in advance .

There’s usually a “black hole” of availability for flights 2 months before departure on most routes, so just keep that in mind. Additionally, availability within 1 month of departure is typically excellent.

Why Austrian Airlines Business Class Is a Great Redemption

As we mentioned earlier, Austrian Airlines uses either the Boeing 777-200 or Boeing 767-300 aircraft for U.S. flights.

The airline’s 767s have business class seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, while its 777s have an alternating 1-2-1 and 2-2-2 configuration. While the seats themselves aren’t the best in the sky, there are other factors that set the experience apart — let’s take a look.

Austrian’s business class catering program is industry-leading.

Most of your dishes are plated next to your seat from a trolley , which is a neat novelty. Multi-course meals feature dishes like glazed short ribs, truffled pasta, and much more.

The beverage selection is plentiful and high-end. There are anywhere from 8 to 10 choices at any given time, including Champagne, white wine, red wine, dessert wine, and more.

Most importantly, though, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a top-notch coffee menu, including “eiskaffee,” which is a lavish espresso drink topped with ice cream and whipped cream.

Overall, the onboard dining program is fantastic.

Austrian Airlines offers efficient service, though it never feels rushed or anything less than great.

You’ll be served a welcome beverage, given a warm towel service, and of course, the full multi-course meal service.

Plus, within a few seconds of calling, you’ll have any service requests answered.

Having the option of booking $4,000 to $6,000+ plane tickets using points is a massive plus.

There aren’t a whole lot of airlines offering nonstop service to Vienna, and being able to access award space on a handful of U.S. routes is a blessing.

When booking Austrian Airlines business class, you’ll get a great soft product, especially if you’re interested in a robust food and beverage program.

Couple this with a generous amount of award availability up to 7 months in advance, the ability to redeem virtually any type of transferable rewards for business class award flights, and a nonstop route network to Austria, and you have a winning product.

Flight Review: Austrian Airlines (767-300) Business Class, From Vienna to JFK

We've written a few pieces about the excellent award availability on Austrian Airlines — a Skytrax four-star carrier that ranked eighth in the world on TPG's list of the best airline food back in 2015. Now, it's finally time we gave this airline a proper review.

I was looking for options to fly back to New York from ITB Berlin , a massive travel trade show, and award availability was understandably tight. However, thanks to Austrian Airlines' generous award availability, I was able to find business-class seats from Berlin (TXL) through Vienna (VIE) to New York (JFK) for 70,000 United MileagePlus miles and $112 in taxes and fees.

I coughed up 70,000 United MileagePlus miles for this one-way flight but could have also booked my ticket through another mileage program. The same trip from Europe to JFK would have cost just 40,000 miles one-way by using Asiana miles, a transfer partner of SPG. Because I was booking my flight within a few weeks of departure, though, and we couldn't be sure that awards would still be available after the 10-day transfer time to Asiana , I opted to book through United . Additional options (if I'd had more time to book) include redeeming awards through Lufthansa (52,500 miles; transfer partner of SPG), Air Canada (55,000 miles; transfer partner of Amex and SPG), Avianca (63,000 miles; transfer partner of SPG), EVA Air (65,000 miles; transfer partner of Citi) or Singapore Airlines (65,000 miles; transfer partner of Amex, Chase, Citi and SPG).

I contacted United to get my Austrian Airlines record locator so I could access my flights. To avoid international calling prices (even at just $0.20 per minute), I direct-messaged United on Twitter and got a personalized response with my record number within eight minutes.

With this number, I obtained my record locator on Austrian Airlines and completed most of the steps to check in before receiving an error message that read, "All selected passengers are excluded from the check-in process." On a hunch, I removed my middle name — which had auto-filled in the first-name box — and was finally able to check in successfully.

At Berlin's Tegel Airport (TXL), the check-in experience was rather basic, but quick thanks to the special priority line for business-class passengers. Two checked bags of 70 pounds each were allowed with my ticket, but I didn't need to bring anywhere close to that much on this trip.

My connection flight arrived in Vienna (VIE) at a remote stand. From there, we were loaded onto buses and dropped at the ground floor of the airport in the connector between terminals. It took just a couple of minutes (which included clearing immigration) to get to the lounge, located a few steps from passport control. Upon presenting my boarding pass, I was invited — in German — to visit the lounge's business-class section.

This lounge was unique in its variation between extremes. The food wasn't very wide-ranging. There was a buffet with scrambled eggs, yogurt, apples, three choices of cereal and a large selection of breads. On the other hand, the drink selection was expansive, with multiple espresso machines offering a variety of coffee drinks; about eight varieties of wine; a handful of beers, sodas and mixers; and 10 self-serve liquor options. While there were men's and women's showers, they were very small and basic bathrooms.

Boarding was scheduled to begin 45 minutes prior to departure from gate G1 — the closest international gate to the lounge. At the gate, there were two lines for passport checks before you could enter the gate waiting area — one for business-class/Senator elites and the other for economy. There was a strange disparity between the large space allotted for business-class passengers and the small, cramped space that economy passengers had to squeeze into.

Boarding began with business-class passengers 17 minutes after schedule. Strangely, I didn't see any secondary US security checks being done at this point, there didn't seem to be any pre-board passengers and families weren't invited to board ahead of time. Due to the layout of the airport, it's quite a hike down the escalators and through a long jet bridge to get to the plane. Despite the late boarding start, we still pushed back a few minutes ahead of our scheduled departure time.

If you've flown in business class on American Airlines' 767 , you already know these seats and the cabin arrangement. The seats are arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 pattern — due to the configuration, they measure only 20 inches between armrests, which is a little tight for a premium cabin. Austrian only flies 767s and 777s transatlantic — the flight attendants mentioned that the same seats are on the 777, however that aircraft sports a convoluted 1-2-1 / 2-2-2 arrangement that creates the opportunity for both good and bad seats.

When it comes to seat selection on the 767, there aren't any clear winners and losers, but you should still take your preferences into consideration when selecting the best place to sit. For the most privacy and best window views, you'll want to pick 1A/K, 3A/K, 5A/K, 7A/K or 9A/K.

With the exception of 1A/K, those seats are going to have a narrow 10-inch-wide entrance, so they might not be suitable for passengers with limited mobility. If you want a window-side seat with plenty of room to get in and out, you're going to want to pick 1A (my seat) or 1K. Across the entire bulkhead, you're going to get more legroom and a larger seat entrance — from 18 inches for seat 1A up to 27 inches for seat 1D.

The seats lie completely flat into an approximately 74-inch bed with a generous foot well. The mechanics are quite quick, and adjusting the bed into your preferred position takes about 25 seconds.

The overhead light can be controlled via either the IFE remote or by the touchscreen. There's also an adjustable reading light for more focused light, as well as a "mood light" button, which lights up the seat-side storage cubby and foot well.

As far as storage goes, these seats aren't the most generous, but there's a surprising number of small pockets to hold your items. The pouch under the in-flight entertainment screen could hold — but not really hide — my 11-inch laptop, for instance. A water bottle holder next to the IFE screen could also double as a place to stash a phone or camera.

Next to that was the literature pouch, which provided little additional space. There's a shoulder-side cubby, which was large enough to hold my phone, camera, 360-degree camera and passport all at once. And there's a small pouch near the floor that, at first glance, seemed to be a shoe pouch, but it was much too small for that purpose. Instead, I ended up using it as a place to store trash and other items that needed to be collected — as the passenger before me had clearly done as well.

In-Flight Entertainment

During the online check-in process, I received this invitation: "To go straight to your free travel reading, click this way." Intrigued, I clicked through to see what was offered. Once there, this message appeared: "You have used up all of your free downloads." The only free publications remaining were Austrian's onboard magazine and the in-flight shopping magazine, while other options were available for €0.99 to €3.99. I took this as a sign of cost-cutting and figured there'd be no reading material onboard, but that wasn't the case. During taxiing, the cabin crew pushed a cart of newspapers and magazines — available in English and German — through the cabin.

Unlike some airlines , Austrian Airlines has a large (15-inch) crisp touchscreen IFE built into the seats.

The IFE system included 54 movie options, episodes from 71 TV titles, 64 audio albums, nine games and — of course — in-flight shopping. For families, there was a dedicated kids' section with popular movies (including Frozen , Storks and Trolls ), audio, games and even a dedicated Austrian Airlines kids' magazine (in German). Movies began with a 30-second ad, which you could manually skip to the end of.

Seats were stocked with a pair of high-quality, Austrian-branded, noise-cancelling — and quite comfortable — three-prong headphones. There's no indicator of the manufacturer of the headphones, which is a bummer, as I might actually consider buying a pair. The IFE system has a three-prong audio output, so while you can plug standard headphones into one of the prongs, you're only going to get sound in one ear — if you'd like to be able to use your own headphones effectively, you'll need to bring along an adapter.

One strange aspect of the in-flight entertainment was the poorly animated safety video. One way of spinning it: It's effective in making you watch the safety video out of pure curiosity as to what strange or borderline creepy thing is coming next.

Taking all of that into consideration, though, the biggest disappointment is that Austrian Airlines doesn't have Wi-Fi on these 767 aircraft, which might end up being a deal-breaker for some travelers.

The seats were stocked with a full-size pillow, a thick rolled-up blanket, an amenity kit and noise-cancelling headphones.

The amenity kit contained a face mask, socks, a plastic-wrapped toothbrush and toothpaste, plastic-wrapped earplugs, lip balm and face cream.

The business-class bathrooms were unadorned but offered a basket of amenities: moist towelettes, earplugs, a stain-remover wipe, plastic-wrapped combs and a full shaving set.

Food and Beverage

Service began during boarding, with a crew member dressed as a chef handing out menus and taking our meal orders before the aircraft door was even closed. A welcome drink — your choice of orange juice, Prosecco or another cocktail — was served after the last economy passenger had boarded the plane. The flight attendant stuck to these choices and wouldn't open a bottle of white wine for the passenger behind me.

Around 20 minutes after takeoff, a warm towel service preceded the first food/drink service, which offered mixed nuts along with a selection of sodas, juices, still and sparkling water, wines and Champagne. Intrigued by the design on one of the soda cans, I decided to try out the "special Austrian ginger ale" called Almdudler — along with a glass of Champagne and a glass of water.

About 20 minutes after the first service, the crew began the meal service. It featured a luxury I hadn't yet experienced; everything but the main dish was plated seat-side from the trolley. Appetizers were a choice among smoked salmon tartare, octopus salad, a Spanish-style ham and cheese, cottage cheese with chives and cherry tomatoes, grilled vegetables and mini-potatoes with butter and bacon. Although all the options looked delicious, I limited my ordering to just the salmon, a potato, octopus salad and ham. None of them disappointed. The service was complemented by a selection of warmed rolls and crackers.

Another 20 minutes later, the second course was served: a smoked tomato soup with optional soft mozzarella cubes. This service also came with a choice of bread.

15 minutes after the soup service was the main course. The main dish was a choice of "miso glazed short ribs, caramelized pineapple, fried sushi rice," "seafood brochette with butterfish/salmon/prawn, risotto with pomegranate seeds" or "truffled rigatoni with creamy mushroom sauce." When the chef took main-dish orders during boarding, I chose the seafood option in a hurry but didn't end up regretting it. The fish was wonderfully cooked and the risotto and pomegranate seeds tickled the palate with completely different flavors than the seafood.

The fourth and final service of lunch was dessert: a choice of cheeses, fruits, "traditional sweet dumplings" (plums and chocolate-filled pastries), marinated mango and a "homemade chocolate parfait." The cabin crew recommended the traditional pastries along with an accompanying glass of award-winning dessert wine. Along with the Austrian treats, I sampled the chocolate ball, cheeses and nuts — along with another recommendation to have a glass of port.

Although I was completely stuffed by this point, the first meal service didn't end there. Another menu was handed out: a coffee menu listing 10 choices. I ordered and sipped the Maria Theresia black coffee but found the orange liqueur to be a bit strong.

Nearly three hours after takeoff, the food/drink service was complete and the lights were turned off to allow passengers to sleep off the massive meal. Passengers weren't forced to shutter their windows, but most did anyway. Through the rest period, the crew was attentive to any passengers who were still awake, offering additional drinks and taking trays of juice and water through the cabin. A quick note: If you ask for coffee, you're going to get a mostly empty cup of espresso.

After slightly less than five hours of rest time, it was time to eat again. The "second service" was a choice between two smaller plates: "smoked salmon with sauce Claudio and ratatouille" or "veal carpaccio with wasabi crème fraîche and beetroot." Sticking with my seafood theme, I ordered the salmon. The flight attendants recommended a glass of Riesling to complement the dish.

We were bound for a 25-minute-early arrival, but evidently the pilots had been directed to pull too far forward — it took a few minutes to figure this out, and passengers had mostly unloaded the overhead bins by the time the error was discovered. Multiple announcements and a few minutes later, everyone was seated and the plane was pushed back a few feet to the correct location. We still ended up arriving 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and the first checked bags dropped out 24 minutes after that.

Overall Impression

Simply put, this was an incredible experience. The onboard service and food were top-notch. The in-flight entertainment provided a variety of options. The amenity kit was basic but satisfactory — with other items available in the bathroom if needed. The full-size pillow, blanket and long lie-flat bed made sleeping onboard easy and comfortable. The 10-hour duration helped passengers get the most out of the experience, too.

The downsides were a lack of Wi-Fi — which has become a necessity for some travelers — and the staggered configuration that led to the need for narrower seats. The current schedule (departing at 10:45am ET) makes getting to this flight rough if you're connecting from elsewhere in Europe or want to enjoy your Vienna hotel. If Austrian can transpose its experience onto a 787 or A350 with Wi-Fi and a later departure time, it would certainly be a top contender in the transatlantic business-class market.

Review of Austrian Airlines Business Class

The Austrians are staunchly proud of all things Austrian, and the country's national airline continues in that vein. The carrier does not offer First Class – so the Austrian Airlines Business Class service is gloriously indulgent. While owned by Germany's Lufthansa Group, which includes Swiss International and Brussels Airlines, everything with this airline points to Austrian culture.

From the menus to the airline's colours, travelling with Austrian Airlines Business Class is a treat, where you will find notable surprises like onboard chefs and a coffee menu akin to a traditional Viennese café.

Austrian Airlines participates in the Miles & More loyalty program and is a member of Star Alliance, which includes the global airlines All Nippon Airways (ANA), Ethiopian, Lufthansa, Swiss International, Turkish Airlines, United and Thai Airways.

Members can earn and redeem frequent flier miles when flying Star Alliance partner airlines. Austrian's codeshare agreements with a bevy of airlines open up hundreds of destinations and lounges for its passengers around the globe.

Airport experience

The main hub airport for Austrian Airlines is in Vienna, and starting your journey here is simple, with Austrian Airlines Business Class premium lane for check-in plus fast-track security lanes and priority boarding. Connecting passengers should pay attention to airport signage, which can sometimes be confusing as travellers traverse between terminals. The airport has grown so fast to meet popular demand for flying with Austrian that many terminals are interconnected via a series of hallways. Helpful staff are available all along the way and do not hesitate to ask for help.

Austrian Airlines Business Class has Schengen and non-Schengen lounges for use by passengers based on their destination from the airport. In addition, there are Senator Lounges, which are accessible to Star Alliance Gold members, Miles & More top elite members, and First Class passengers on other Star Alliance flights within the same itinerary.

The lounges offer hot and cold food and a wide range of complimentary beverages, including wine, beer, liquor, and periodicals. Comfortable relaxation and work spaces with free Wi-Fi and the airline's LoungeNet platform make them popular places to enjoy pre-flight. Self-serve bars and buffets are well-kept and amply stocked. The Business Class Lounge also provides panoramic views of the airport apron.

Outside of Austria, there are no Austrian Airlines-branded lounges, but Business Class passengers are always treated to access to third-party lounges, often affiliated with the airline's Star Alliance partners.

Cabin & Seat

Red and blue accents appear throughout the cabin, which helps make the grey and brown seat touches look even more appealing. Austrian operates a long-haul fleet of Boeing 767-300ER and 777-200ER aircraft with alternating seat configurations.

Seats recline to a flat bed and measure 2 metres (6.5 feet long) on the B777 and 1.9 metres (6.2 feet long) on the B767. Both aircraft offer 111.7 centimetres (44 inches) between seats, sufficient for tall travellers to have ample stretching room. On the B767, seats 1A and 1K have notably more legroom since they are at the bulkhead, and the footwell goes into a cutout of the wall in front rather than another seat. There is also a more spacious entryway to the seat.

Plenty of storage space is available, including a pocket for magazines plus a power and USB outlet for charging devices. Each seat has a pillow and rolled-up duvet blanket to help passengers stay comfortable on long flights.

On the B767, the setup is 1-2-1, while on the B777, the setup alternates by the row between 1-2-1 and 2-2-2. On either plane, solo travellers will prefer one of the single "A" or "K" seats for maximum privacy, while those travelling together should opt for the pairs of seats. The pairs of seats in the centre section have two side tables, and on the B767, the solo seats have side tables alternating between being on the side of the window or the side of the aisle. Seat maps show which seats have a small table closer to the aisle for those that prefer to have a barrier between your seat and the aisle. Those with the table in the centre mean that the seat is more exposed to the aisle - this makes it easier to get in and out, though.

On the B777, the single seats are considered "throne seats," which are the best options. The airline charges a fee for these prized seats (solo seats with a table on either side and no seat neighbour), although its most loyal elite status fliers can select them for free. In addition, any Business Class passenger can request these on the day of departure without charge. Other seats in Business Class are free to reserve in advance.

The flight search on BusinessClass.com includes images, videos and seat maps for most airlines and aircraft. Search results also include details such as seat pitch, width and recline. This way, you can see the seat and cabin configuration of the flight in which you are interested before making your choice.  

Before takeoff, passengers can choose between Prosecco, juice, or water – although, in some cities, alcoholic drinks are not available as a pre-departure option. These are accompanied by bite-sized amuse-bouches from the Flying Chef, which is a nice touch. If you want more details on the inflight libations, the printed menus detail what is on offer. Some crew members are also trained as sommeliers, so do not be shy if you have questions about the wines on offer.

After takeoff, galley carts come down the aisle with drink options, including three white wines, three red wines and a dessert wine. Passengers can enjoy three sparkling wines, including a Prosecco and the Duval-Leroy Brut Réserve Champagne, although choices can vary based on the flight. Typically, there are four beers to choose from, all Austrian in provenance, and the crew is almost always proud to recommend their favourite.

The spirits list offers everything from Campari to Chivas Regal, while digestifs from the bar include Rémy Martin and Bailey's Irish Cream. The "Sidecar" cocktail is memorable. Its main spirit is Cognac, and is designed as a pre-rest snifter. Of course, soft drinks, juices, and tea are available in addition to the impressive coffee menu.

An iconic experience on Austrian flights is the post-meal Viennese coffee menu. It features nearly a dozen choices of hot and cold Julius Meinl coffees, each prepared individually and served in extravagant glasses or cups and saucers with a chocolate. It is delightful and similar to what you might experience in a Viennese coffee house. A firm favourite is the Wiener Eiskaffee – a double espresso served with vanilla ice cream and freshly whipped cream, served in a tall glass. Another treat is the classic Viennese Wiener Melange – an espresso coffee prepared with steamed milk and topped with foam.

Austrian crews are multi-lingual, speaking excellent English and the language of the destination in addition to German. They are conversational and interested in explaining details of the menu or chatting about where you are flying. Expect a friendly and charming crew on board.

Entertainment

Wide 38-centimetre (15-inch) entertainment screens on the B767 and B777 aircraft are controlled via remote and touchscreen. They have up to 400 hours of movie and sitcom options, plus cartoons for children, a global selection of music and all kinds of short programming like documentaries. Noise-reducing headphones are available at each seat and available before takeoff.

International newspapers and magazines are available to download and save to your laptop, tablet or smartphone before takeoff. Visit the airline's eJournals portal on the website. The seatback contains a catalogue of 'airline-exclusive' items to purchase on board. The catalogue can also be viewed online in advance of the flight.

Amenities & Facilities

Amenity kits offer goodies, including eyeshades, ear plugs, lotion, lip balm, socks, and dental kits. Passengers on select flights also receive a limited-edition small rucksack in an Austrian design. Before each meal service, there are also hot towels to refresh your face before dining. The bathroom has more amenities, like combs and stain-removal wipes.

Families travelling with infants can request seats suitable for a bassinet - Austrian calls it a "baby basket" - on long-haul flights; these should be reserved in advance to guarantee availability.

Short & Medium Haul

Seats on short-haul aircraft are located at the front of the aircraft and offer slightly more legroom than in Economy Class but with the adjacent seat blocked to provide more space and comfort. Passengers enjoy free lounge access at the airport, priority check-in, fast-track security, and boarding.

On European and regional flights to the Middle East lasting more than three hours, Austrian still offers a full bar service and a two-course menu service with restaurant-style place settings and a trio of bread, followed up with an Austrian apple strudel or the passenger favourite "Kaiserschmarrn" – a sweet shredded pancake dessert. Passengers on short flights of up to 50 minutes now receive a new hand-baked pastry option with a dine-on-board or takeaway option. 

Austrian is recognised for its Do & Co catering, and that does not end when you depart a long-haul flight. It also continues for the connecting flight, and the Austrian-friendly service is excellent no matter how long the flight is.

Sustainability

Austrian Airlines plans to reduce CO2 emissions by 33 per cent by 2030 while increasing its fuel efficiency by 1.5 per cent each year. Short and medium-haul flights will use a 2 per cent blending of alternative fuels, and there will be no domestic flights on routes with rail connections less than 3 hours from Vienna Airport. Since 2008, passengers have had the option of offsetting their Co2 emissions, resulting in EUR 1.5 million invested in CO2 compensation.

The airline uses software to plan the shortest possible flight times to minimise fuel use, while its Boeing B777 aircraft now have a fuel scavenge pump designed to collect unusable fuel. Wheel-faring modifications to its Embraer E195 aircraft also help reduce drag and fuel usage. Electric vehicles around the Vienna hub and recycling programs are additional areas of focus for the airline.

Austrian Airlines B777 Business Class Review

Austrian Airlines has brilliant food (best in the skies in Business Class) and a small fleet of 5 Boeing 777 (and 6 Boeing 767), which have recently been retrofitted. The new Austrian Business class is trendy with a red-blue-white color scheme and dark grey seat covers.

It feels more luxurious as compared to the design aboard its Lufthansa Group sister company Swiss. If you have a choice, fly Austrian, not Swiss: although Swiss still has the reputation of being Europe’s best airline, it is now outclassed (in almost every aspect) by Austrian airlines.

Austrian Airlines does not have its own lounge at Bangkok’s impressive Suvarnabhumi Airport. Still, its Business Class passengers have access to Star Alliance partner Thai Airways Royal Silk Business Class lounge which we’ve reviewed. From the lounge, it was a 10-minute walk to gate D6, where the Boeing 777-200ER was ready for boarding. On this occasion, the flight was operated by Austrian’s second-oldest B777, registration number OP-LPA.

Business Class Cabin

Business Class on Austrian Airlines’ Boeing 777s is spread over two cabins: a large Business Class cabin with 32 seats (in 7 rows) behind the cockpit and a smaller and more intimate Business Class cabin with only 16 seats (in 3 rows), which is in front of the Economy cabin. Both Business Class cabins are divided by the main boarding door, a galley, and two lavatories.

The Business Class seats are set up in a staggered configuration, where the foot compartment for each seat is located between and under the seats in front. The same layout can be found on Brussels Airlines’ A330, Finnair’s A330/A340, Swiss’ A340/A330 , Delta’s B767, and American’s B767. The staggered Business Class cabin configuration on Austrian Airways comprises 10 single seats, while the remaining 38 seats come in pairs.

All seats enjoy good privacy, as none of the rows quite line up, so nobody is directly looking into the seat across the aisle. Most seats also have direct aisle access, except for the paired window seats, where the passenger seated along the window will have to climb over his/her neighbor’s legs to access the aisle.

Business Class Seat Review I was seated in seat 3A. All Business Class seats have the same characteristics: 152 cm (60 inches) in pitch, a width of 50 cm (19.5 inches), and a 180-degree recline. All seats have at least one large work surface on the side, with all single seats and some paired seats featuring this workspace on both sides. Within that work surface, you will find the seat controls to adjust the seat position, which goes to fully flat and adjusts the seat cushion.

Austrian Airlines Business Class seats are not made of the customary plastic foam, but instead, the seat cushions have air-filled chambers, and with one press on the button, you can either soften or firm up the seat cushion according to your liking, as well as activate its integrated massage function. On the side of the seat, there’s also a power port with international adapters, a personal reading lamp, and a meal tray. In front of the seat, there is a 15 inches (38 centimeters) entertainment touchscreen (compared to the disappointingly small entertainment screen at 10,4 inches or 26 cm on Swiss airlines .

The seat is comfortable when you’re sitting upright, but in its lie-flat position, although it’s a 180-degree recline, the seat (and your lower legs) descends into a space carved out for it in the seat in front, below your entertainment screen. While somewhat larger than the food compartment in Swiss’ Airbus A330/A340 Business Class, this foot compartment is still quite small, making it hard to switch position during your sleep while not waking up, as your legs will constantly hit the walls.

In addition, in its lie-flat position, the seat is just 45 cm (17 inch) above the floor, making it feel like you are resting on the ground or in a coffin, making it very uncomfortable to get in and out. This is one of the most uncomfortable lie-flat seats in the sky, especially when compared to the lie-flat seats installed on Austrian’s competitors such as American Airlines , British Airways , Emirates , Qatar Airways , Etihad and Cathay Pacific . But Austrian Airways does provide blankets and very good pillows, which improves sleeping comfort.

The seats in the second cabin (rows 8 to 10) are preferable since this cabin feels more intimate. The single best seats for solo travelers are the single seats. Travel companions should go for the paired middle seats, which all have direct aisle access. There are also paired window seats in rows 2, 4, 6, and 10, but the passenger in the window seat will have to jump over his/her neighbor’s feet to access the aisle.

I suggest avoiding the window seats in rows 7 and 8 since the proximity to the galley may be bothersome. I also suggest avoiding the seats in row 10, which are directly in front of the Economy bassinet seats (so you may end up being close to young children).

Austrian Airlines Amenities

Each seat comes with a very comfortable blanket, thick pillow, and an additional blanket for the seat itself. The dark grey Business Class amenity kit has socks, a sleeping mask, a shoehorn, a toothbrush, toothpaste, earplugs, sugar-free mint, skin lotion, and a voucher for the Bogner online shop.

Food On Austrian Airlines

Before takeoff, I was offered a choice of welcome drinks: orange juice, water, or Champagne. Dinner service started immediately after the captain had turned off the fasten seat belt sign.

Austrian Airlines’ meal service is superb and offers the most delicious food in the sky. The food comes from DO & CO, a catering company with upscale restaurants and cafés in cities like Vienna, London, and New York. The crew rolls a selection of starters, entrees, and desserts through the cabin so you can choose what you want for each course. Austrian Airlines also has onboard sommeliers to offer wine pairings for its Business Class passengers.

I chose the creamy corn soup with olive tapenade crostini for the starter. As the main course, I had grilled codfish with dijon beurre blanc, fried potatoes, oriental lentils, and leaf spinach. Delicious! Dessert was a cheesecake with marinated berries, accompanied by fresh fruit cuts.

90 minutes before landing, the excellent breakfast was served (pictured below). The onboard chef had taken the breakfast orders from a separate menu before we took off in Bangkok, so I was items that I had previously chosen: a slice of cold meat and cheese deli platter, yogurt, muesli, fruit salad, and two eggs, sunny side up with crispy bacon. It was one of the best breakfasts that I enjoyed in Business Class.

Onboard Wi-Fi is currently not offered by Austrian Airlines.

Business Customs

Business practice and etiquette is similar in Austria and the United States; however, there are some important differences. First, it is worth noting the relatively formal environment in which business is generally conducted in Austria. When making appointments with prospective buyers or clients, it is customary to make initial contact well in advance (either in writing or by phone) and to offer to meet on the business premises of the person in question. Another manifestation of Austrian formality is the widespread use of titles, whether in recognition of a university degree, a position in a firm, or in the government. Finally, remember that Austrians place a high value on a personal relationship as a precursor to a business relationship.

If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, make sure to be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. 

Visa requirements

A visa is not required for U.S. citizens who wish to stay in Austria for up to 90 days within a six-month period. At the conclusion of the 90-day stay, the visitor must leave the country. 

U.S. companies that require travel by foreign businesspersons to the United States should have their contacts consult their closest U.S. Embassy for visa travel guidance. Visa applicants should go to the State Department Visa Website .

The currency used in Austria is the euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, though there may be some establishments that choose to accept cash only. For official business payment transactions many still prefer traditional bank transfers over credit and debit cards. Checks are not common in Austria.

When possible, withdraw cash from bank-run ATMs, this prevents you from possible high fees. Usually, the ATMs are located in the entry lobby of the bank and/or just outside the bank.

To tip servers in bars and restaurants, customers traditionally round up small totals to the nearest euro. (e.g., paying EUR 8.00 for a EUR 7.70 meal is completely acceptable.)  Even on large bills, the tip does not need to exceed ten percent of the sub-total. 

Telecommunications/Electronics

Telecommunications services are reliable in Austria and internet access is widely available. The phone system is fully automated, and direct dialing is available to most countries in the world at varying international rates. Pre-paid SIM cards for phone and internet are available at mobile shops, post offices, bookstores, tobacco shops and supermarkets. Portable Wifi devices with unlimited internet data can also be purchased at mobile shops. Austria uses the GSM standard for its cellular service. Austria uses the EU standard 230 volts/50 Hz power sockets. Adapters can be found in airports, train stations, and electronic shops throughout Austria. Although some modern appliances can work with both U.S. and European voltages, any U.S. appliances compatible with only U.S. voltages (110 or 120 volts) will need a voltage converter to operate safely.

Transportation

Direct flights connect Vienna to several U.S. cities primarily through Austrian Airlines (Star Alliance), with many other routes through other European cities. Austria’s modern highways link most cities, and numerous border crossings into neighboring countries are easily accessible. Austrian Railways (Österreichische Bundesbahnen, ÖBB) offers domestic and international rail trips. Private rail service Westbahn offers rail trips within Austria and to Munich Germany. Though German is the official language, most Austrians speak at least some English.

Vienna is one of the safest cities in Europe and the world. Violent crime in Austria is rare. Pickpocketing and purse-stealing are the most frequent crimes in urban areas and even these are rare. As in any large city, visitors should take care when walking alone to avoid dark and isolated places.

Medical care is widely available throughout the country and doctors usually speak English. Visitors are encouraged to consult with their own medical insurance company prior to travelling to Austria to determine medical insurance eligibility or if supplemental medical insurance is necessary for travel. Travelers needing to consult a doctor should check with the receptionist at their hotel or make use of the yellow pages of the local telephone directory. Water in Austria is pure and safe to drink and all milk sold in Austria is pasteurized.

Local time, business hours, and holidays

Central European Time (CET) is used in Austria. There is a time difference of +6 hours between Vienna and New York City, except for a few weeks in the spring and fall when European and American daylight savings times differ. Austrians use the 24-hour clock. For example, 5 p.m. is written as “17:00 Uhr.” Austria follows European Daylight Savings Time, which begins the last Sunday in March, and ends on the last Sunday of October. Business visitors should note that the Austrian vacation season is in July and August, and that many decision-makers take extended vacations during that time. Appointments may also be difficult to make during Christmas break (December 20 – January 6). Many offices are closed Friday afternoons, reflecting the widely implemented 38.5-hour work week. 

Temporary Entry of Materials and Personal Belongings

When entering Austria, business visitors should declare valuables. It is advisable to have a copy of the invoice available. The visitor will be issued a Customs document called a “Verwendungsschein,” which will also include the visitor’s departure date. When leaving Austria, the visitor should go through Customs again for a checkout.

Austrian Airlines Business Class Review

Following a SWISS Airlines flight from Tokyo to Zurich (read our review of SWISS Business Class here ) we continued through Europe to Vienna with Austrian Airlines after a short layover in Zurich. The early morning flight was made easier thanks to Austrian Airlines and SWISS both being part of the Lufthansa Group.

This meant we were able to check our bags and receive our boarding pass before departing Tokyo. This allowed us to skip the check-in process and head straight through security to the SWISS Schengen Business Class lounge on level 2 of Zurich Airport before our flight.

Boarding was quick and easy with business class getting priority boarding. The seats were as you would expect on a domestic flight with the business class and economy cabins sharing the same 3-3 layout. The seat size was the main difference in business class with the middle seat being free, allowing for more room between passengers. Although the flight was very full, the middle seat was never compromised for those in business class.

Departing early in the morning meant we were offered breakfast on this short flight. Once we were in the air, flight attendants came round offering this. There was one breakfast service that was on offer which consisted of yogurt with figs as the main dish, with a side of some cheese, cold meats and tomato along with a freshly baked croissant that was provided slightly later (we put this down to it being heated up).

The yogurt was delicious with the figs adding a nice touch of sweetness. The croissant was soft, fluffy and very fresh and paired really well with the Apricot jam and butter that was provided on the side. We were also offered a selection of drinks that included tea, coffee and juice. We opted for a coffee.

With out flight being very short and not much longer than an hour, meal service was extremely quick but did not feel rushed. Shortly after finishing our meal our tray was cleared and we prepared for landing in Vienna.

Although seating was smaller than your regular long-haul Business Class, the seating is exactly what you would expect on a shorter flight. The seats were comfortable, the staff were friendly and accommodating and it made a nice difference having the middle seat spare to create an exclusive business class space. With good food and drinks, we would happily fly within the Schengen area with Austrian Airlines again.

Review: Austrian A321 Business Class – Vienna to Pristina

Booking a four-segment itinerary without any real rest in the middle isn’t for the faint of heart. I don’t think I’ve ever had this many flights back-to-back before. Ideally, I like to take a positioning flight within the U.S. and then fly a nonstop long-haul to my destination. This helps ease you into your first day and makes the jet lag a bit more bearable.

This trip was totally different. You don’t have many options when booking a ticket from a regional airport to a country with an airport the size of a regional airport. That’s at least how I’d describe Pristina International. So four segments it was. After flying long-haul in SAS A330 Business Class , I hopped to Vienna from Copenhagen in a E195. This final segment in Austrian Airlines A321 business class took me from Vienna to Kosovo.

Buses and Stairs: Hurrying through Vienna Airport

It’s always disheartening to deplane via stairs (except at ACV where it’s normal). I don’t know how common this is in Europe, but I think it’s been my experience about half the time over 10 short-haul flights. Short-haul gets the short end of the stick, it seems, but I have even deplaned an A350 via stairs. The stairs plus bus process always eats 10-15 extra minutes. I guess it’s the bus part that is most aggravating. I dislike this process more than most other aspects of air travel.

Since this was an EU flight and I was departing on a non-EU flight, I had to catch another bus over the to terminal area containing my gate. My connection time at Vienna Airport was exactly an hour, so I was in a hurry. By the time I’d cleared passport control and sprinted to the restroom, it was scheduled boarding time. I ran sections of the home stretch to Gate 61, bounded down three flights of stairs, and finally made it to Gate 61. Turns out they put the flights to Kosovo in the basement. 

And…I need not have hurried. At least quite that much. The staff were still checking documents, and boarding had not commenced. I figured I’d have to show my COVID-19 test, as this is required to enter Kosovo, but Austrian did not ask for it. Boarding started after five minutes…onto yet another bus. Yay. Three buses. It’s the tight connection airport experience from hell. But I’d made it.

The rain picked up a bit, and being last off the bus meant I ended up the wettest. Of all days, this would be the day to use two sets of stairs. But no. Two busloads of people take a while to file into an A321. I was quite glad to finally stow my bag and sit down in my Austrian Airlines A321 business class seat.

Like so many other European airlines, short-haul business class is pretty lackluster. The cabin consists of economy seats, with each middle seat left empty. Some airlines install plastic trays over the middle seats. Not Austrian. It looks just like economy. I don’t think there’s even any extra pitch. But it was a welcome sight. I was very happy to be out of the rain and onboard an Airbus, not a transit bus.

Johann Strauss’ quintessential waltz, By the Beautiful Blue Danube, was playing when I entered the cabin. Some other super famous pieces played as well. I recognized all of them, but couldn’t name any others. Not that much of a classical music nerd. The bright red headrests and crew uniforms reflect the national colors. Both of these touches clearly remind you that you’re flying Austrian. 

The Austrian Airlines A321 business class seat was exactly what I expected for an intra-Europe product. The seats were very clean, cleaner than U.S. airlines have generally been even with “enhanced cleaning” during COVID-19. Pretty good condition for a 25-year-old aircraft, I must say. The seats are not all that comfortable in terms of padding, but, again, this is an economy hard product. One upside to business was being able to store my bag between the seats, so even though legroom is minimal, I got it all.

Being one of just two passengers in business class meant that I had not just a row to myself, but a whole side of the aircraft to myself. My more recent flights during COVID-19 had been very full. Not this trip. There were a good number of empty seats besides the business class cabin. 

We were briefly a cabin of four , however. An American couple decided that empty business class looked nice. Our flight attendant politely, but firmly, made them march back to row 27, their actual assigned seats. There was some confusion over these being “just like the other seats”. Oh, no. Can’t you see this is business? It’s so obvious. Just look at the seats!

Meal Service

The meals on a short-haul flight are usually a surprise. This was no exception. The crew bought out trays very quickly. Lunch consisted of spinach gnocchi (best I could tell…don’t think it was pasta) in a white, buttery sauce. The flavor was different, but good. Dessert was a chocolate mousse dome.

I requested a vodka tonic to go along with the meal and then finished everything off with a cup of tea.

The crew pretty much disappeared after clearing the lunch trays. But they did later bring around chocolates, branded for Austrian Airlines. For a short-haul intra-Europe business class flight, it was one of the better experiences I’ve had.

Flight Experience

It was still raining lightly when we departed Vienna. I was a bit surprised to see an Emirates Airbus A380 taxiing in while we were on out way out. I knew they’d brought back some, but Vienna seems an odd choice among all the other European destinations.

As we got further south of Austria, the clouds cleared and the window seat views were excellent. That is until a WizzAir plane shot right underneath us mid-flight. It gave me a good jolt of shock. We must’ve been separated by the required 1,000 feet, but the plane seemed so close.

When you’re on your fourth flight segment and 22rd hour of travel and counting, the exhaustion begins to catch up with you. Mid-flight surprise notwithstanding, I hit a wall halfway through the flight and was very glad this was my last segment of the trip.

As we got closer to Pristina, I spotted the highway connecting Kosovo with Albania. Then we circled around, slowly descending toward the capital. The views were fantastic , especially this one of Uroshevac in the southern section of the country. If you’re not familiar with Kosovo or the Balkans geography, the country is tiny. You can drive across it in two hours.

Final Thoughts on Austrian Airlines A321 Business Class

While I’m unlikely to pay the premium for any carrier’s intra-Europe business class, I have to say that I was happy with Austrian Airlines A321 business class, part of a larger class itinerary. It was nice to be in a such a sparse cabin, but that was mainly a feature of the particular route and flight date (late summer, after the Kosovar diaspora tend to return home). While the crew didn’t hang around all that much, all our interactions were pleasant. Lunch was even better than expected.

The negative was definitely the Vienna Airport experience. Before the trip, a friend of mine told how much he liked Vienna Airport. My memories consist of: stairs, bus, stairs, run, passport control, run, stairs, bus, stairs. Remind me not to book the hour connection next time. Maybe I’ll like it then.

I know I’ll be back. I’ve yet to visit Austria, plus Austrian is a carrier I’d like to fly long-haul at least once. Until then, auf wiedersehen .

Summary Given the economy class configuration, you have to temper expectations for any intra-Europe business class. I found Austrian Airlines A321 business class to be a nice experience, with pleasant crew and decent food. The one frustration was the ground transfer at Vienna. Overall, it was a fine end to my four-segment itinerary.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens. 

Prospective residents or anyone intending to  stay longer than 90 days  must obtain the appropriate visa. Visit the  Embassy of Austria’s website  for current  visa information  or the Government of Austria’s  website on migration . Austria collects the fingerprints of all visa applicants.

Students  and prospective students should visit the  Study in Austria  webpage for current information on  student visa requirements. Fulbright students and scholars with questions should contact their respective  program officer .

Traveling Through Europe:  If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. 

• Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay  if you plan on transiting a Schengen country review our  U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
• You may be asked to show proof of s ufficient funds  and a  return plane ticket.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Austria.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Some terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – against soft targets, such as:

• High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
• Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
• Places of worship
• Shopping malls and markets
• Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Crime:  Austria has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and violent crime is rare. Crimes of opportunity involving theft of personal property do occur. These crimes frequently occur in tourist areas, including the plaza around St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the nearby pedestrian shopping areas in Vienna’s First District.

• Beware of  pickpockets  on public transportation and in bus or train stations. Trains between Vienna and Budapest, Prague, or Rome are high-risk.
• Do not leave bags unattended.
• Do not carry your passport when sightseeing within Vienna; lock it in your hotel safe or other secure area unless needed for travel. Instead, carry a photocopy of your passport at all times along with a second form of ID such as a U.S. driver’s license.

Demonstrations  are common. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events. 

• Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and demonstrations. 
• Past demonstrations have turned violent.
• Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Victims of Crime:  Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. You can call the police at 133. Outside of a major cities, it may take first responders and medical professionals longer to stabilize a patient or provide life-saving assistance. Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, imprisoned, or deported. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Austria. The LGBTQI+ community is well-developed in larger cities, including Vienna, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg. LGBTQI+ organizations operate freely. While there is some societal prejudice against LGBTQI+ persons, Austria has become more liberal with laws and social opinion concerning sexual orientation and gender identity. Local hospitals will not settle accounts directly with American insurance companies.  You must pay the hospital’s bill and later claim reimbursement from the insurance carrier in the United States.  The Austrian Medicine Import Act prohibits the import of most prescription drugs into Austria. However, non- European Union residents are allowed medicines as part of their personal luggage, but only the quantity required for the period of time you’ll be in the country. Travelers may not receive medicine by mail from abroad while in Austria. If a particular medication is not available in Austria, an Austrian pharmacy may be able to order the medication prescribed by a local physician from a pharmacy in the United States.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

• Many medications that are common in the United States are illegal in Austria, even with a prescription. Austria does not allow the importation of any pharmaceuticals that contain narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances. Obtaining such medications in Austria is either impossible or requires a diagnosis and prescription from an Austrian doctor. Please review the medication rules on the websites of the  Austrian Embassy  in Washington, D.C., and the  Austrian Health Ministry .
• COVID-19 tests in Austria are widely available at local Apoteken (pharmacies), including rapid and PCR tests. U.S. citizens are responsible for paying for all costs upfront. Results are normally delivered by e-mail, test or you may request a physical copy from the lab.  
• The COVID-19 vaccine is available free of charge for U.S. citizen residents of Austria and hold valid Austrian healthcare E-cards. U.S. citizen visitors may be required to pay vaccination costs upfront.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Road conditions in Austria are excellent. During the winter, roads in alpine areas may become dangerous due to snow, ice, or avalanches. Some mountain roads may be closed for extended periods. Snow tires or chains may be required in certain provinces or mountain towns. If you are renting a car in winter months and driving to a ski resort, check with your car rental company to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped.

Be alert when you drive through autobahn construction zones, particularly on the A-1 East/West Autobahn. Traffic information  and road conditions are broadcast on the  English-language channel, FM4 (frequency depends on location). Traffic information is posted on digital signs, and trackable in popular mobile apps. Emergency roadside help and information may be reached by dialing  123  or  120  for vehicle assistance and towing services (Austrian automobile clubs),  122  for the fire department,  133  for police, and  144  for ambulance. The European emergency line is  112 .

Traffic Laws : Please see Austria’s  travel webpage  for detailed information related to driving. Below are key laws to consider:

• Penalties for  driving under the influence  are stricter than in many U.S. states.
• Display an “ autobahn vignette ” highway-tax sticker  on the inside of the vehicle’s windshield. The fine for failing to display a valid sticker is EUR 120 ($150 USD), paid in cash “on the spot.”
• The  maximum speed  limit is 130 km/hr (81mph) on the Austrian autobahns.
• It is  against the law  to use a  hand-held cell  phone while driving.
• It is  against the law  to turn  right on red .
• It is  mandatory  for cars on Austrian motorways to pull over when an emergency vehicle is approaching. On two-lane roads or larger, vehicles pull over to either far left or far right to create an emergency corridor down the center.  
• You could be issued a substantial fine  for not usin  winter tires  on your vehicle between November 1 and April 15, depending where you are driving. Your car  insurance is void  if you are in an accident, and your vehicle does not havewinter tires.
• Read your rental contract closely.You may be  arrested, fined , and/or charged with attempted auto theft if you try to drive a rental car in countries listed as “prohibited” on the car rental contract.
• A U.S. driver's license  alone is  not sufficient to drive in Austria.  A U.S. driver's license must be accompanied by an international driving permit or by an official translation of the U.S. driver's license, which can be obtained in the United States at AAA, or at one of the Austrian automobile clubs (ÖAMTC or ARBÖ). U.S. citizens who intend to take up residence in Austria must obtain an Austrian driver’s license after six months of arriving.
