Hol Chan Marine reserve is located just south of Ambergris Caye, a short 15-minute boat ride south of San Pedro. It is one of the most popular snorkel spots in Ambergris Caye, with reefs brimming with the richest variety of marine life. After snorkeling the reserve, you will head over to Shark Ray Alley, located inside Hol Chan Marine Reserve. It is a popular snorkeling site teeming with nurse sharks, rays, and marine life. By visiting this snorkel site, you can be guaranteed a sighting of some sharks.

HOL CHAN AND SHARK RAY ALLEY

The single most popular snorkeling tour for guests on Ambergris Caye is the famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan (meaning little channel) is a compact yet vibrant example of the marine diversity provided by the Reef. Shark Ray Alley gets you as close to nurse sharks, stingrays and horse-eyed jacks as you would like to be. Night snorkeling can also be enjoyed at Hol Chan after dark.

MEXICO ROCKS AND TRES COCOS

A pleasant snorkeling alternative for those who would rather not get close to the nurse sharks. This tour stops at two equally excellent locations for observing a variety of fish and coral. With plenty of large coral formations you are sure to find colorful treasures around every coral head!

SAIL, SNORKEL & BBQ COMBO

A full day  sail  up north on a catamaran with snorkeling stops at magnificent Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos. Followed by a delightful BBQ lunch on the beach and a leisurely sail back to the resort with rum punch and the tropical breeze in your hair!

Your Best Guide To Snorkeling In San Pedro Belize

With an 185-mile barrier reef, the opportunity to see a vast array of sea life in San Pedro Belize is pretty amazing. The options are basically endless when it comes to snorkeling. All around the island of Ambergris Caye, there is an abundance of colorful corals and sea life easily accessible by both whole day and half day tours. Diving is also an option, although it requires a PADI license.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

This is arguably one of the most impressive snorkeling spots in the whole world, making it the most popular snorkel site in Belize country. It is just 4 miles south of San Pedro, making it easily accessible for a half day trip. Its four main zones is home to over 160 fish species, 40 coral species, 3 sea turtle species, 8 algae species and 2 seagrass species. Occasionally, sightings of tarpon, West Indian manatees, and hammerhead sharks are reported.

Shark-Ray Alley

With excellent visibility, you can almost always see all species of fish in this spot, but the main attraction is definitely the nurse sharks and sting rays. As soon as the boat arrives at the site, you will notice dark shadows nearby. Nurse sharks average 4 to 6 feet high, while rays have a wingspan of 2 to 4 feet. With numerous boats in the area every day, these animals have a great tolerance for humans and seem to enjoy the interaction.

Snorkeling at Mexico Rocks

Located off the far northern tip of Ambergris Caye, San Pedro on the Belizean Barrier Reef, Mexico Rocks is a popular snorkeling destination. Here, you will have the chance to admire giant Brain Corals and large collections of corals with juvenile fish scurrying about. It is also possible to see spiny lobsters and stingrays here. This area is also known for conch, flounders and an assortment of angelfish. The underwater visibility at Mexico Rocks is pretty perfect and makes for an excellent half-day snorkel adventure.

Goff’s Caye

At Goff’s Caye, there is an abundance of brain coral, every color fish you could imagine, sting rays, barracudas, and small sharks hanging around. Its waters are rather shallow, so it should be great for those who have never snorkeled before. The island is particularly small, and there is nothing much but sand and palm trees. There is a dock where you can tie your boat onto, and a small shack selling food and drinks. On a bright and sunny day, it is a surreal, idyllic deserted island.

Coral Gardens

Located between Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, Coral Gardens is a patch of reef whose main attraction is the beautiful, colorful corals. Although the fish life is not as abundant as some of the other snorkel spots in San Pedro Belize , you should still find gorgeous reef fishes, including parrot fish, fairy basslets and hogfish. Moray eels are also frequently spotted here, as with the occasional nurse shark and lobster. This is also a half-day tour.

On this all-day tour we wake up bright and early and pick you up at 7AM then we head to  the mainland on an one hour boat ride then we have breakfast then we take a private van to the new river which takes about 45-50 minutes, arrive we disembark from the van and head into another 50 minutes boat ride. When we arrive at the Maya Ruins we will have lunch then we take a experience guided tour around the beautiful Maya ruins of Lamanai when we finish the site we will do an express ride on the way back and you should arrive back at your hotel by 5PM. Bacalar Chico Snorkeling Beach BBQ Package

On this all day tour we start by picking you up at 8:30 and head up north and stop at Bacalar Chico visiting center where we get some info of marine life from there we cruise through the mangrove river where the mayan dug out. Along the river theres a manatee resting whole where we try and see the manatees, after that we head to snorkel at rocky point in the reef then we head a little more down from there and do a delicious BBQ lunch on a quiet secluded beach. After that we do one last snorkel stop at Tres Cocos reef then we head to your hotel around 4:30. Headed to Central America with your mask and fins and looking for the best snorkeling in Belize? Keep on reading, as I spent some time underneath the waters in San Pedro testing out the nearby snorkel spots!

Ever dream of swimming with sharks without getting your leg bitten off? What about swimming throughout schools of fish and watching a sea turtle glide gracefully throughout the water? Does snorkeling with a sting ray tickle your fancy?! Care to swim alongside a manatee (!!!) anyone? Well, my H2O lovers, snorkeling in Belize will be riiiight up your alley.

And such, Belize is the place to be. This post has got just what you’re looking for – some of the best snorkeling in Belize, coming right up!

With a 185-mile barrier reef (only second in size to Australia’s), the opportunity to see a vast array of sea life while snorkeling in Belize is pretty amazing. Pretty gosh-darn epic if you ask me. The options are basically endless when it comes to sticking your head below the surface.  

Many tour operators will lend you a mask and snorkel, but I highly suggest you bring your own.   These have excellent reviews and come in a wide array of colors.

All around the island of Ambergris Caye there is an abundance of sea life and colorful corals just waiting to be explored. The water is turquoise in color, and the best Belize snorkel spots are easily accessible by both half or whole day tours. Diving is also an option, although requires a PADI license.

But Belize took me by surprise.  It was a whole different experience. (And thus, this list of the best snorkeling in Belize spots was born).

I get a lot of questions about what camera I use when snorkeling, and I currently use a GoPro Hero 4 and Nikon Coolpix AW120 ( updated version (with wifi) here ).  Refer to the end of this post for a few more snorkeling must-haves, or check out my travel store for even more personal recommendations. 🙂

Best Snorkeling in Belize: Top Spots

1. hol chan marine reserve.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is arguably one of the most impressive snorkeling spots in the entire world- and for good reason.  Therefore, the fact that it is considered the most popular snorkel site in Belize makes perfect sense.

Being so incredibly close to the town of San Pedro, just about 4 miles south (a short 15 minute boat ride), makes it easily accessible for a half day trip.  It was so easy (and downright impressive), that I came back the next day for some more underwater fun.

Hol Chan can actually be divided into four main zones or habitats: the coral reef, grass beds, mangroves, and shark-ray alley.  Within these zones, over 160 species of fish exist, as well as roughly 40 species of coral, 5 sponges, 8 algaes, and 2 seagrasses.  Oh, and 3 species of sea turtles >> my absolute favorite.

Occasionally, sightings of tarpon, Hammerhead sharks, and West Indian Manatee’s are reported.  Let me know if you are one of the lucky ones to swim alongside a Hammerhead Manatee.

2. Shark-Ray Alley

It’s no coincidence that the Sharks and Rays hang around one particular section of the reef.  In the past, local fisherman would often clean their catch in this area, thereby attracting Nurse Sharks and Southern Sting Rays.  When they noticed this, the fisherman notified the dive shops in San Pedro, which quickly made “Shark-Ray Alley” an extremely popular dive and snorkel site in Belize.

With excellent visibility, you can almost always see all species of fish (including jacks, groupers, snappers, parrot fish, angel fish, barracuda), but the main attraction will definitely be nurse sharks and sting rays for sure.

As soon as your boat arrives to the site, you will notice dark shadows nearby.   Hello sharks and rays!  

Nurse sharks average four to six feet in length, while the rays have a “wing-span” of two to four feet.  With numerous boats in the area each and every day, these animals have a great tolerance for humans and seem to enjoy this interaction.  Many will even swim right up to snorkelers!  Although not harmful in any way, it is best to keep a safe distance and not touch the animals.

This is a must-stop for any snorkeler wishing for a unique underwater experience.

3. Mexico Rocks

Located off the far northern tip of Ambergris Caye in the Belizean Barrier Reef (just a 20 minute ride from San Pedro), Mexico Rocks is a popular snorkeling destination.

Here, you will have the chance to admire giant Brain Corals, as well as a large collection of Star, Elk Horn Coral, and Staghorn Coral, with juvenile fish scurrying about.  Colorful sea fans, azure vase sponges, and butterfly fish add life to the area as well.

The area is also known for conch, banded shrimp, arrow crab, flounders, yellow tail snappers, and an assortment of angelfish.  It is also possible to see spiny lobsters and sting rays here (which is why I’m dubbing it one of the best Belize snorkeling spots you can find).

The underwater visibility at Mexico Rocks is pretty perfect, and makes for an excellent half-day snorkel adventure.

4. Goff’s Caye

On our Manatee watch, our boat stopped at a pristine little island with beautiful, clear water.  Unfortunately, mother nature decided to do a little dance, and it downpoured for a majority of our tour.  However, once we ducked our heads below the surface, the rain didn’t matter one bit.  Thankfully, we were still able to snorkel off the Caye’s white sandy beaches among colorful coral and fish.

The snorkeling is great for those just getting used to the idea, although a professional is necessary to guide you to the right places around the small island.  The waters were rather shallow, which was great for my friends who have never snorkeled before.  After we held hands for a bit and she became comfortable, I was able to let go and explore on my own with the group (and take pictures)!

At Goff’s Caye, there is an abundance of brain coral, every color fish you could imagine, sting rays, barracudas, and small (harmless) sharks hanging around.

The island is particularly small, and there is nothing much but sand and palm trees. There is a dock that the boat tied up to, and a small shack selling food and drinks. On a bright and sunny day, I bet it’s absolutely surreal, an idyllic “deserted island”. Maybe next time… just gives me an excuse to go back 😉

5. Coral Gardens

After snorkeling four times in Belize in just a few days, I still wanted more. Crazy, right? The marine life was out of this world, so I signed up for yet another half-day tour, this time to explore the Coral Gardens. This spot, located between Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, is a patch of reef whose main attraction is the beautiful colorful corals.

To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well.

Tour the ancient city of Caracol.

One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”

Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.

Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.

“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”

Explore the underground caves of Belize.

The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”

Join a tubing tour through the caves.

Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.

Feast on your own fresh catch.

According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”

Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.

The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.

Learn all about chocolate.

The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .

Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."

Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.

Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.

“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."

Learn about the Garifuna people.

“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Get dive certified.

“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”

Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .

Meet new feathered friends.

Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.

More than 150 native animals make the 29-acre Belize Zoo their home. Most of the zoo’s residents are rehabilitated or rescued, and they include tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, coatimundi, and more. The fully accessible zoo offers VIP guided tours.

Browse and shop at San Ignacio Market.

Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, this market is set on the banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio. Open every day until 6 p.m., the market gives visitors a true glimpse into Belizean life, with handmade clothing, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale by farmers and local craftsmen. Nearby San Ignacio town offers restaurants, bars, and shops.
