Tropical Snorkeling – Destinations, Equipment & Safety Tips

Bermuda Snorkeling – The Information You Need

Bermuda snorkeling is remarkable. We spent nearly a month in Bermuda, with perfect weather, and snorkeled it thoroughly, from both gorgeous pink sandy beaches and outer reefs by boat tour. The reefs and sea life are very healthy.

What are the best Bermuda snorkeling beaches and boat tours? Fortunately there is great snorkeling all around Bermuda you can access from shore, although there are no full size car rentals. And the outer reefs that are accessed by boat tours are even better, but many boat companies don’t actually take you to the outer reefs.

Elbow Beach – This beautiful public beach has lots of healthy reef to explore.

Church Bay – Fun snorkeling awaits you at this gorgeous and popular spot.

Snorkel Park  – This Royal Naval Dockyard beach is great for cruise ship passengers because it’s close to the docks.

Best Boat Tours – Outer Reefs and Shipwrecks

Click on the links below for descriptions of Bermuda snorkeling excursions to the outer reefs and shipwrecks.

Outer Reefs – There is a massive outer reef system to the west and north of the group of islands that offers some of the very best Bermuda snorkeling available. Unfortunately most boat companies do not take you to the outer reefs, and instead take you to some poor shore spots. We recommend you ask tour operators if they offer tours out there.

Shipwreck Snorkeling – Thanks to the shallow reefs surrounding the group of islands, Bermuda shipwreck snorkeling is plentiful. If you enjoy wrecks there are a few you can access from shore, and a number available by boat excursion.

Why Do We Enjoy Bermuda Snorkeling?

1. Gorgeous Public Beaches With Easy Shore Access Bermuda has some of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen. And yes, they do have the reputed pink hue. Many of the Bermuda snorkeling beaches are public for free access to healthy reefs.

Pink sand beach on Bermuda.

2. Wonderfully Healthy Shallow Reefs Almost everywhere you snorkel, the shallow reefs are healthy. These are the most northern coral reefs in the world, and in the winter the water temperatures drop into the 60’s °F. So, they are not the most diverse reefs you will encounter, but they are some of the healthiest we have seen.

Bermuda's healthy coral reefs

3. Big Creatures Many of the fish and hard and soft corals in Bermuda are bigger than their counterparts in the Caribbean . By a large margin, we saw the biggest chubs, squirrelfish, snappers, Corky Sea Fingers, Branching Fire Coral heads, and many others than anywhere else before. Maybe it is a result of the northern location and colder winter waters somehow?

Huge Hogfish we saw while snorkeling in Bermuda

4. You Can Always Find a Calm Beach for Bermuda Snorkeling Bermuda’s winds are more variable in speed and direction than anywhere we have snorkeled before. Unlike many destinations in the Caribbean and even Hawaii , there is not a consistent easterly trade wind. And the beaches are scattered all around, instead of dominantly on one coast. This means that no matter where the wind is blowing from, you will always be able to find a calm shore snorkeling spot.

5. Super-Friendly Destination Bermuda’s residents are the most friendly we have encountered yet in our tropical snorkeling explorations. It’s so nice to be greeted with smiles and friendly words. And questions are welcome too.

Safety Tips for Bermuda Snorkeling

As you can see by the Bermuda snorkeling map below, the snorkel beaches are all over.

Respect the Ocean Conditions There are not many protected coves or bays with good Bermuda snorkeling. And you have to swim outside the coves or bays to find the best underwater sights. Though most of the south shore beaches have reefs offshore, they are not protected from big waves or currents. And even the north shore, which is inshore water protected by offshore reefs, can get wavy in the right wind direction. So most of the time you will be in water exposed to open ocean conditions . There is also the potential to encounter a current anytime, as tidal changes are more significant in Bermuda because of its northerly location, and tides contribute to currents.

The reefs on Bermuda are often a little ways offshore sometimes requiring a long swim. You must be able to read the ocean and know your limits to snorkel these locations safely. And when you snorkel these reefs always watch for boat or jet-ski traffic.

Bermuda Snorkeling Travel Tips

When to go for snorkeling.

After our trip to Bermuda in July, and some consultation with locals, we think the best time to go to Bermuda for a snorkeling trip is June. The air and water temperatures are in the upper 70’s °F, the underwater visibility is a little better than later in the summer when algae starts to bloom, the mosquitoes are not present and there are a lot of bait balls. Early in the summer you are at a lower risk of hurricanes too.

The months to avoid for Bermuda snorkeling are February and March. They have the worst weather with high winds, and cold water.

In the winter there is much better underwater visibility, but you will need a wetsuit for warmth. But boat tour companies often shut down during the winter months, so if you go during the winter you may not be able to access the outer reefs.

Water and Weather Conditions

Looking into the water from a boat in Bermuda

Because Bermuda is out in the Atlantic Ocean and farther north than any of the Caribbean islands, it has very different snorkeling conditions. The water temperatures have a large range throughout the year, in the 60’s °F from December through April, the 70’s °F in May, June, October and November, and the 80’s °F in July, August and September. Air temperatures are basically the same as water temperatures year round. Also the tides move much more in Bermuda which can make some spots too shallow for snorkeling at low tide and can change the water visibility especially on the outer reefs in summer.

The other thing that varies much more than other destinations is the underwater visibility. Unfortunately, the warmer the water gets, the lower the visibility is. This is a result of algae blooms as the water temperature increases, and of calm weather that allows the water to sit. In the summer, the water will be clearest after a hurricane or tropical storm passes within at least 300 miles of Bermuda, because the storm will refresh all of the inshore waters.

Unlike destinations with winds that very consistently come from one direction, Bermuda’s winds are variable. During our July stay, we had wind from every single direction. Though, when the winds are more consistent, they come out of the southwest, blowing parallel with the length of the group of islands. And generally speaking, the winds are lower in the summer months, June, July, August, and September, which you can see on the Windfinder statistics page .

There is no specific rainy season, every month gets some rain. Get the statistics on this website .

Hurricane season is officially from June to November. Historically they are most common in September, but can happen during any of the months. Plan your trip accordingly and consider trip insurance .

Flying to Bermuda

It’s a little easier to fly to Bermuda from the U.S. than many Caribbean islands. There are a number of daily options and some seasonal ones too. You can fly to Bermuda from London and Canada as well. This website has a list of airlines that fly to Bermuda.

Getting Around Bermuda to Snorkel Without Full Sized Car Rentals

Bermuda is unique in that full size car rentals are not allowed. So how do you get to the Bermuda snorkeling beaches? You have five options.

1. Taxi – Expensive, but excellent service, very nice, tons of them, and it’s safe. You just can’t get in the cabs in your wet beach gear. So take dry clothes, and plan on changing under a towel because there are few to no changing rooms.

2. Bus – The public bus goes most everywhere, and it is affordable, but it is slow and you also cannot ride it in wet beach gear.

3. Scooter Rental – This is what we did. It’s the most popular way to get around, gives you the most freedom, and you can ride in wet beach clothes. Riding “bikes” as they call scooters on Bermuda is one of the major forms of transportation used by locals. Getting your first 50cc scooter for your sixteenth birthday is a rite of passage for residents.

Renault Twizy electric vehicle rental on Bermuda

4. Small Two-Seat Electric Vehicle Rental – This is a relatively new option in Bermuda, but, calling these little things a car is a bit of a stretch. This is an attractive alternative to a scooter. The rentals have four wheels and two seats with seat belts. They are fully electric so you must charge them up, but charging is free. Some are open air and some have windows and air-conditioning.

5. Ferry – You can shorten many trips across Bermuda by taking a ferry. Some allow you to bring your scooter.

Snorkeling From a Scooter or Small Electric Car?  – We were at first concerned about how it would work to snorkel from a scooter. But it was actually great. We drove it all over, snorkeling many locations per day for almost a month. We kept a little soft cooler with a lunch and water under the seat. There is a good sized basket on the back of all the rental scooters that carried our snorkel bag with gear .

Two snorkelers and a scooter, with Bermuda ocean in background.

The small electric vehicles vary in how much space they have for gear, so the passenger may need to carry it on their lap. And they vary in whether they are open air or have windows with doors that lock. Remember, they are electric vehicles which means you will need to charge them up. They vary in how and where you can charge them, so make sure the company’s setup fits into your plans. A charge will take you 43-100 miles depending on the vehicle.

What Are the Challenges With Scooters?

Driving on the Left Side  – Although new to us, it was not a problem. We feel it’s much easier to get used to on a scooter, compared to a car with the steering wheel on the opposite side, and more driving habits. At every intersection just say to yourself “Keep Left!”, and you will do fine. Oh, and go clockwise at traffic circles and yield to traffic from the right. There is so much traffic that mostly you just follow what other people are doing and you won’t mess up. And all scooter renters wear white helmets that Bermudians are used to accommodating. People are kind in Bermuda.

Bermuda scooter parking lot

Is It Safe? – If you get hit by a car it’s going to be a problem. But keep two things in mind. Speed limits are low, officially at 22mph, but 30mph is what you should expect. Also, the roads are very narrow and winding with no sidewalks and normally a wall alongside. Personally we found that navigating these narrow roads was much easier and less stressful on a scooter, as compared to a car. You just have more room to move. There are innumerable blind intersection corners, that are easy to pull out from on a scooter, but difficult with a car. Bermudians are excellent car drivers, because there is zero room for error.

Still, driving a scooter on Bermuda requires constant vigilance and care. Driving when the roads are wet is not recommended, nor at night. If you don’t have any experience on a scooter, ride double with someone who does. That is what we did. Or maybe rent one at home to get used to it first.

The small electric vehicles offer more safety for sure. There are seat belts and air bags in case of any major accident. Even though they are a car, they are still quite narrow, allowing you to have more ease with the narrow roads in Bermuda than a normal car.

Where to Stay for Bermuda Snorkeling

Bermuda has numerous lodging options: resorts, hotels, guest houses, apartments, vacation rentals, and bed and breakfasts. Lodging can be expensive. Our Bermuda snorkeling accommodations page shows you how to find affordable options and where to stay to be close to the best Bermuda snorkeling.

Take a Cruise to Bermuda The major cruise lines Celebrity, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean, leave from U.S. East Coast cities and dock at Dockyard, often for three days allowing you to explore the group of islands. It can be an affordable way to go as you do not need to pay for accommodations. But, if you do this, don’t book a Bermuda snorkeling boat tour with the cruise company as they will not take you to the better offshore reefs, but inshore ones that are not good.

Bermuda Snorkeling Guide: 9 Best Dive Sites On The Island

Since the 16th century, seagoing explorers venturing west from Europe and beyond have dashed their boats on Bermuda’s shallow reefs, sinking on the spot or near it. The proliferation of their emptied-out hulls dotting the underwater landscape has earned Bermuda the title of shipwreck capital of the Atlantic . Many 18th- and early-19th-century vessels, commissioned for trade or war, still sit, largely intact, on the ocean floor. By some estimates, there are upwards of 300 wreck sites around the island—contributing to the Bermuda Triangle mythology and making its waters an especially thrilling playground for divers and snorkelers alike.

In Bermuda, the best diving and snorkeling is done from a tour boat, which shepherds you out to specific sites, where you'll encounter wrecks as well as angelfish, the occasional sea turtle, and stingrays. For the uninitiated, here’s how they work: Dive tour operators often also offer snorkel tours. Most scuba dives last around 35 to 40 minutes, depending on your size and breathing rate, and most dive trips stop at two separate sites over the course of a morning or an afternoon. The sites you visit on a tour are ultimately at the divemaster’s discretion, but most are receptive to suggestions and requests. Here, we take you through the most exciting dive and snorkel spots on the island’s east and west ends, rated by level of difficulty, how to get there, and what to expect when you do—so even if it’s your first time out, you’ll sound like a veteran.

Perhaps due to its proximity to some of the most beloved shipwrecks around the island, the west end of Bermuda is home to a bevy of solid dive and snorkel tour operators. But there are a handful of standouts: Blue Water Divers , the longest-running PADI dive center on the island, and Snorkel Bermuda , a snorkel shop in the Royal Naval Dockyard whose “bread and butter is shipwreck snorkeling” says owner Sonny Sullivan. Guests of the Fairmont Southampton might also look to the hotel’s excellent Dive Bermuda shop (dive trips from $150, including equipment). Blue Water Divers offers year-round morning dive trips (two tanks, meaning two separate sites, departing at 9 a.m. in the summer and 10 a.m. in the winter and lasting about four hours, starting at $130) and, during the summer, afternoon one- and two-tank tours departing at 2 p.m., as well as PADI certification courses of all levels. Snorkel Bermuda’s trips depart daily in the summer at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 3 p.m., and last about two hours; tours start from $60 per person. Both shops rent equipment, in case your BCD didn’t fit in your carry-on.

The Lartington, the Constellation, and the Montana

To the northwest of Bermuda, a cluster of three 19th-century wrecks has become a regular destination for divers: the Lartington, a massive English steamer that sank in 1879, the Montana, a Civil War-era blockade runner that sank in 1863, and the Constellation, an American cargo ship that sank in 1943. All three sank in relatively shallow water, making them especially great sites for novice divers; the latter two eventually became the basis for Peter Benchley’s follow-up to Jaws, The Deep . And, according to Sullivan, they’re excellent snorkel and dive sites not only because of the wrecks themselves, but because of the expanse of healthy, thriving coral reef that grows around them.

North Carolina

An English sailing ship that ran aground in 1880, the wreck of the North Carolina can now be found to the southwest of Bermuda at depths between 25 and 45 feet—shallow enough for beginners, varied enough for more experienced divers. Along the edge of the ship, “deadeyes”—part of the sailing rigging, so named because they look like cartoonish skull faces—line the hull, peering back at you with an eerie fixed gaze. It’s worth stopping at a local drugstore (or checking out the dive shop) for a disposable waterproof camera to capture the deadeyes.

Bermuda’s not only about the wrecks, and on the west end of the island, there’s one especially good naturally occurring site: the Eel Garden, named for the field of threadlike little garden eels that peep their heads up from the sand, waving in the current like kelp. Split over shallower and deeper waters—ranging from roughly 30 to 70 feet—Eel Garden also makes for a good all-abilities destination.

Bermuda Attraction Blue Water Divers

A proliferation of great underwater sites makes Bermuda an especially thrilling playground for diving and snorkeling.

The wreck of the Sea Venture, an English sailing ship, on Bermuda’s reefs in 1609 marked the beginning of the British colonial presence on the island. Since then, myriad other boats have met their end on the reef, but the east end is also home to Bermuda’s more notable non-wreck sites like the Cathedral, North Rock, and Eastern Blue Cut. To take you there, we recommend the Grotto Bay Beach Resort outpost of Dive Bermuda (two-tank dives from $150; snorkel trips from $70 per person), whose operation is just as polished as its west-end counterpart, but tends to frequent the east-end sites highlighted here.

The Cathedral

On the east end of the island, the Cathedral site comprises a series of coral formations and canyons populated by angelfish, parrotfish, and other critters. But its main attraction is a vaulted reef structure (where a single shaft of light reaches through a hole in the top like a skylight) that divers can swim through. Still, its varied depths—from 26 feet to 55 feet—mean it’s a great destination for snorkelers and divers, even if its main attraction is out of reach if you don’t have an oxygen tank.

You’ll know you’ve arrived by the massive yellow-and-black beacon on top of the reef, designed to ward ships away from the shallows. (Perhaps there are enough wrecks around Bermuda.) It might not seem like an auspicious start to a dive or snorkel, but underwater, it’s a different matter: Expect some of the most pristine reefs around, with undulating purple sea fans, massive coral formations, and different species of fish—including, Sullivan said, some “big huge monsters” of grouper. Like the Cathedral, North Rock features reef formations shallow enough for snorkelers and water clear enough to peer from the surface into the deeper depths. But it has even shallower formations and a maximum depth of around 30 feet, regularly excellent visibility, and a massive area to roam.

Eastern Blue Cut

A “cut” is a break in the reef, and there are two major ones that attract divers and snorkelers in Bermuda. The Eastern Blue Cut is, according to the University of California at San Diego’s study of the best dive sites on the island, one of the largest, a spot where “the flow of nutrients” results in a super-healthy reef with bountiful (and huge ) fish. It’s slightly shallower and less trafficked than the Western Blue Cut, so it’s especially good for snorkelers during peak tourism season in Bermuda.

Cristobal Colon

When Bermuda made National Geographic ’s list of the best places in the world to dive, it was the Cristobal Colon that the magazine called out. A Spanish cruise liner that ran up on the reef just a few miles from North Rock in 1936, the ship was looted pretty substantially after it sank; four years later, the surviving contents of its cargo were auctioned off . Despite the lack of sunken treasure on board these days, it’s still a popular stop: Measuring 499 feet when it went down, the Cristobal Colon remains the largest ship to wreck in Bermuda, and, ranging from 15 feet to 60 feet in depth, it’s both shallow enough to give snorkelers a good vantage and deep enough to attract experienced divers. (It used to protrude above the surface of the water—but that was before the U.S. Air Force started using it for target practice during World War II.)

Snorkelling

It’s not necessary to go diving to get a close-up view of the island’s marine life; snorkelling in Bermuda can be an equally rewarding experience. The reefs are healthy and generally close to shore, and the fish abundant and colourful.

The best time to snorkel is between May and October. The water temperature during this period averages 79°F. November to March is considerably cooler, although water visibility is better.

Snorkelling from a boat in Bermuda

Renting snorkelling gear can be fairly expensive in Bermuda, especially if you’re travelling with a family. Prices vary but average around $15 – $20 per day for a mask, snorkel, and fins. If there’s a few in your party and you are planning on doing a lot of snorkelling the cost can quickly add up. If you have room in your baggage you can save a bit of money by bringing your own snorkelling equipment.

You could also buy snorkel gear in Bermuda, but it’s almost certainly going to be more expensive than in the US.

The Best Places to Snorkel

Snorkelling is possible at most of Bermuda’s beaches but Church Bay and Tobacco Bay are widely regarded as the best. Other good places include John Smith’s Bay, Warwick Long Bay, Snorkel Park Beach, Hog Bay Park, and Achilles Bay.

Church Bay is in Southampton Parish and is a good choice for most tourists. It’s near the Fairmont Southampton and the Reefs. It is also on the main bus route between Dockyard and Hamilton (bus route 7). The reef is close to the shore and home to large parrotfish and other colourful fish. The water can get a little choppy though, and the beach is fairly rocky. There’s a park here with picnic tables and public restrooms.

Tobacco Bay is the main beach in St George’s Parish. When the cruise ships used to dock in St George it used to get packed with cruise passengers. Now most of the ships dock at Dockyard it is much quieter. It’s not near any major hotels and is at the opposite end of the island to Dockyard. If you’re looking for a good place to snorkel though, it’s worth making the effort to get there. The water is shallow and calm and great for children, and the bay is surrounded by interesting limestone rock formations. There’s also a beach bar here where you can buy drinks and food, and hire snorkelling equipment, beach chairs etc. Achilles Bay is nearby. It’s a lot smaller but has a nice restaurant and bar.

Warwick Long Bay is another option that ticks a lot of boxes. As well as offering fairly good snorkelling it’s also a great place for walking and jogging. Rip currents are common on this and other South Shore beaches so it’s best for experienced swimmers.

Jobson’s Cove is adjacent to Warwick Long Bay and is one of the best places on the South Shore for children and novice swimmers. The water is completely enclosed by cliffs and is shallow and calm.

Hog Bay Park is for the adventurous traveller. To reach the beach you’ll have to navigate your way through woodland and farmland. It requires a bit of planning too. Visit at low tide or you’ll find the beach has disappeared. Pick up a copy of the Royal Gazette to find out the tide timings. It’s easily reached from Dockyard and is served by bus routes 7 and 8.

Clarence Cove at Admiralty House Park is a good snorkelling spot for those staying in Hamilton. The cove here is sheltered and shallow enough for small children. Bus service 4 will take you there.

Snorkel Park Beach at Royal Naval Dockyard is the easy option for cruise ship passengers. It’s just a short walk from the cruise ship docks at Kings Wharf and Heritage Wharf. The beach isn’t particularly pretty, but there’s a bar here and you can rent masks and fins, kayaks, floats etc.

John Smith’s Bay is another option off the beaten path. It’s one of the few beaches in Bermuda with lifeguards.

Average Ocean Temperature by Month

The graph below shows the average ocean temperature in Bermuda by month. The ocean is warmest between May and October. This is the best time for snorkelling.

Underwater Visibility By Month

Underwater visibility varies throughout the year. Visibility is at its highest during the winter months. Unfortunately, this coincides with a fall in average water temperature.

Snorkelling Excursions and Tours

Some of the best snorkelling is found too far from the shore for swimming. Companies such as Fantasea offer snorkelling tours that often include a visit to a shipwreck.

You could also rent a boat and snorkel gear and plan your own trip. Companies offering this option include H20 Water Sports, Blue Hole Water Sports, and the Tucker’s Point Dive and Water Sports Centre.

One of the best snorkelling sites is North Rock, located around 10 miles offshore. The world’s most northerly rim reef is teeming with marine life but is rarely visited by tourists or locals. The Island Tour Centre offers occasional snorkelling trips here.

All we have to say WOW! Sam was our captain and she was amazing. So knowledgeable and took us to an amazing spot where we snorkeled, paddle boarded and swam. They had all the equipment we needed and Sam even helped with the kids with all their gear. We had a storm come in so our trip was cut short by about an hour but glad Sam knew when to get us out of there. I would HIGHLY recommend restless natives. 12 Things To Do In Bermuda: Complete Guide To Pink-Sand Paradise

B ermuda is a paradise for nature lovers with its lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and stunning pink sand beaches. Among them, Horseshoe Bay stands out as the most popular and breathtaking beach, with its salmon-pink sand and teal waters. Visitors often find themselves in awe of the picturesque scenery and captivating landscape. The pink beaches, in particular, tend to grab visitors' attention. But what causes Bermuda's beaches to have pink sand?

Red foraminifera, tiny marine creatures, are the culprits behind Bermuda's blushing beaches. These creatures are caught in the crossfire and excreted along with limestone sediment by fish, mixing with the white limestone to create the unique rosy beach sand. With eight different pink sand beaches to explore, the South Shore of Bermuda is a must-visit destination.

Besides Horseshoe Bay, travelers can explore other natural wonders like the West Whale Beach, Cooper's Island Nature Preserve, the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, and more. So, pack some bags and explore the charming island of Bermuda, and don't forget to experience the magical allure of its pink sand beaches.

There Are More Things To Experience While You're In Bermuda!

This article has been refreshed with new information regarding Bermuda and new things to do while on the island. From pink sand beaches to museums to abandoned churches, Bermuda is the place to be this summer and beyond. Have fun, and don't forget to pack sunscreen!

Things To Do

Bermuda has so much to see , whether it's a pink sand beach, fantasy cave, zoo, aquarium, or even the various styles of architecture around the island. This article will dive into the different things to do in Bermuda , so keep reading!

Take A Walk Through Hamilton

  • This is the capital of Bermuda.
  • Hamilton is at the center of the island.

For those in Bermuda, something easy for the whole group is walking through Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda. The downtown area is filled with many of these attractions, boasting sidewalks lined with shops, food, and local vendors.

Hamilton is beautiful and smaller, making it a nice day trip. If the weather's nice, someone could spend the whole day here getting some exercise!

Tom Moore's Jungle

  • Nature Preserve in Bermuda

The next attraction in Bermuda to consider is Tom Moore's Jungle, a protected area of mangroves & woodland with limestone caves, hiking, and the Blue Hole swimming pool.

This is a nice natural spot within the island, giving people a glimpse of the true, authentic beauty of the islands. Most people spend about 2–3 hours here, so make sure and allow enough to experience everything.

Bermuda Aquarium, Museum And Zoo

  • Address : 40 N Shore Rd, Flatts Village, Bermuda
  • Hours : Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM

Something fun to try while in Bermuda is the Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. Here, guests can enjoy one of the world's oldest aquariums, established in 1926. This is about 700 miles off the coast of the United States and serves the island of Bermuda and the greater Bahamas for ocean conservation, education, and preservation.

There are roughly 300 species held here, with many being local sealife one would see in the water surrounding the aquarium. This museum and zoo are tucked within the Flatts Village, where other attractions, shopping, and dining await.

What gives this location an advantage is that it's based on conservation rather than simply removing sealife from its natural habitat. Scientists and researchers work here to help animals and rehabilitate some back to the wild.

For those with kids or anyone who cherishes the water, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo is a great stop on the island!

Walk Through The Unfinished Church

  • Address : Government Hill Road, St. George's, Bermuda
  • Hours : Open 24 hours

The next stop to consider while in Bermuda is to tour the Unfinished Church, a now-museum of what once would have become a magnificent Gothic structure upon completion in the 1800s. This stone church is very mesmerizing, having an old-time appearance.

Guests can walk around the property, seeing what once was the site of the island's main place of worship. However, construction halted before the church could be finished, ultimately leading to it becoming abandoned through the 1900s.

Like many of the buildings in Bermuda, this church is filled with history and local lore. Of course, because this isn't a functioning church, guests don't have to dress up to go.

Instead, wear something light and flexible, so everyone will be comfortable during the tour.

Some backstory on the church: it wasn't completed due to funding problems, parish infighting, and multiple damaging storms. It was supposed to replace St. Peter's Church but never came to fruition.

Take In The Pink Sights At Horseshoe Bay Beach

  • Horseshoe Bay Beach is the famous "pink sand" beach in Bermuda.

The first thing someone wants to do while in Bermuda is check out the pink sand of Horseshoe Bay Beach. Not only does this location have fantastic views of the crystal clear water, but it also features the island's famous "pink" sand.

Horseshoe Bay has its name because the shape of the beach resembles that of a horseshoe. There is also a trail leading from this pink sand beach to Warwick Long Bay Beach, which is typically less busy and great for snorkeling.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the more popular beaches in Bermuda. It may be better to head out early or wait until sunset to check out the pink sand, as fewer tourists will be there at these times. The nearby Warwick Long Bay Beach may also be a good alternative.

Hang Out Under A Sea Cliff At West Whale Beach

  • West Whale Beach features many sea cliffs and rock formations.

To continue the beach party, tourists to Bermuda may want to explore the sea cliffs at West Whale Beach. This beach is known to be one of the best spots on the island to catch the annual whale migration, making it a top choice for animal lovers.

The best time to see whales is between March and April, so keep that in mind.

There are various boats that take people out to where the whales typically travel, allowing them a better, clearer view of these magnificent creatures. Bermuda is filled with cliffs, hiking trails, and scenery, all of which can be found here at West Whale Beach.

It's also worth mentioning that West Whale Beach is more secluded and will be less crowded than famous hot spots like Horseshoe Bay.

Experience Luxury At Catherine's Beach

  • St. Regis Hotel is on this beach, making it a private area for guests of the resort.

Catherine's Beach is another excellent location for people traveling to Bermuda to check out. This beach is on St. George's Island, boasting soft white sand and serene blue waters. One standout feature of Catherine's Beach is that the new St. Regis Hotel is along the shore, giving guests access to restaurants, bars, and a swimming pool.

This hotel may be worth staying in for anyone wanting to elevate their Bermuda trip, as it's one of the premier luxury resorts on the island. To indulge in luxury, Catherine's Beach will be the perfect stop.

Witness Bermuda's True Beauty At Cooper's Island Nature Preserve

  • Cooper's Island Nature Preserve consists of eight islands.

Visiting Cooper's Island Nature Preserve in Bermuda is a great day trip to add to the itinerary. This preserve consists of eight beautiful beaches, all giving tourists a look into the island's natural beauty.

Unlike some other hotel-lined locations, Cooper's Island Nature Preserve offers people a break from the noise and lets them unwind and take in the sun's rays.

This preserve also has concessions, picnic areas, playgrounds, and views of the St. David's Lighthouse. A day here will almost always be calm and serene, making it a top pick for travelers after a more remote vacation. Bermuda is filled with hidden gems: visitors just have to find them.

If someone wants a more peaceful beach day, they might prefer to explore Cooper's Island Nature Preserve. This preserve features eight beaches, all with their own natural beauty.

Go Snorkeling Or Diving At Church Bay And Tobacco Bay

  • Church Bay and Tobacco Bay offer some of the best snorkeling/diving in Bermuda.

Snorkeling at the various beaches in Bermuda will be fun for people who love to be in the water. Notably, Church Bay and Tobacco Bay feature some of the best conditions for snorkeling and diving, giving them the edge.

Because of the island's crystal clear water , rainbow reefs, and almost haunting shipwrecks, it's a divers' paradise.

One thing to remember, however, is that it's always safer to go snorkeling or diving in groups. Depending on the weather, the water may be difficult to navigate. There may also be sealife nearby, which, although primarily peaceful, may choose not to be one day.

  • Bermuda has various snorkeling and diving companies to go through for visitors, so that's an idea to consider.

These beaches are also amazing for snorkeling/diving in Bermuda: John Smith's Bay, Warwick Long Bay, Snorkel Park Beach, Hog Bay Park, and Achilles Bay. There are countless deep dives into Bermuda's most haunted shipwrecks as well, so adventure awaits!

For anyone after a more exciting day in Bermuda, exploring the Crystal and Fantasy Caves is worth doing. These underground cavern pools are often regarded as one of the cooler things to see while in Bermuda, allowing tourists to witness the million-year-old formations around them.

The Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves in Bermuda also offer guided tours, which may be better for groups or large families. During one of these tours, a local guide will bring guests through the caves, explaining the area's rich history and culture.

One thing to mention, however, is that many cruise ships advertise this destination for those getting off: so try and book ahead of time.

  • During peak cruising season, getting a tour or reservation at the caves may be difficult, so check their website before heading out.

The Crystal and Fantasy Caves in Bermuda can book up fast, so try and schedule a tour a few weeks before a vacation. This will help when other cruise ship passengers get off and head to the caves during peak seasons.

Dive Into The Water At Blue Hole Park

  • The Blue Hole Park is a part of the Walsingham Nature Reserve.

Another must-see attraction in Bermuda is Blue Hole Park. This park is a part of the Walsingham Nature Reserve and gives guests a peek into the true natural aura of the island. Many locals also call this place "Tom Moore's Jungle."

Visitors will follow a main pathway to Blue Hole Park, starting at The Causeway and Blue Hole Hill Road. From there, they can explore the various caves and walkways and dive into the beautiful waters.

It's worth mentioning that portions of Blue Hole Park are a bit more wooded, giving it a jungle feel. Make sure to stick together to avoid getting lost in the trees!

Visit St. George's On The East End Of The Island

  • St. George's is filled with historic buildings and museums.

Visiting St. George's is a must-do for travelers who love architecture and history while in Bermuda. The entire town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering guests a look into the rich history of the island and its native people.

People can view where the first settlers to Bermuda landed during the 17th century, take a guided walking tour through town, visit King's Square, and even step inside the National Trust Museum.

Because there is so much history in the area, there will be countless opportunities for learning and even a bit of eating and shopping. The beaches in this part of the island are also stunning.

Best Time To See Bermuda

  • May to October are the best times to travel to Bermuda.
  • Beaches will be busier during peak season.

When it comes to the best time to see Bermuda, travelers may want to come here during the prime vacation season: May to October. Typically, this is when the water and air temperatures will be at their best, being warm but not hot or uncomfortable. Bermuda's spring months quickly heat the air and ocean temperatures, so guests want to be here before the dead of summer.

October is often considered the best month to visit Bermuda , as it's rated highly for tropical destinations in the fall.

The beaches of Bermuda will always have people on them, but depending on the time of day, guests may be able to secure a spot and set up camp.

Best Ways To Get Around Bermuda

  • The bus system in Bermuda is the best way of getting from Point A to B.
  • Rideshare will be very expensive here, even more than taxis.

For those wanting to figure out transportation once in Bermuda, one of the best ways around town is via the bus. Generally, buses run daily, from morning to late at night, giving tourists a way around the various destinations.

Of course, Bermuda has taxis and rideshare options, but these often cost much more. Especially during peak seasons on the island, visitors could spend far more to get in a cab than hopping on a bus.

Many past visitors to Bermuda also claim that traveling from one spot to another via moped is a quick and easy way to get around, although that can be more dangerous.

Tips For Staying In Bermuda

For those thinking about traveling to Bermuda, there are some things to be aware of. First, this island, although popular with tourists, can be expensive. Bermuda is considered one of the more luxurious destinations in the area, giving it an edge in terms of hotels, restaurants, and experiences.

Location-wise, Bermuda is not considered to be in the Caribbean. That is a common misconception among visitors, so that's something else to know when searching for hotels, transportation, etc.

Many locals and past visitors strongly recommend remaining covered between the beach, pool, and other destinations. This country can be somewhat conservative, so be cautious of what everyone wears and try to stick together.

Of course, at a resort, tourists are fine to do as they please, but throughout local spots on the island, bring something to put over a bathing suit.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In Bermuda

Spending the perfect day in Bermuda won't be challenging. One thing to start off with, however, would be a sunrise beach hike or walk at one of the island's various pink sand beaches. As mentioned, Horseshoe Bay Beach and Warwick Long Bay Beach are two great choices.

Considering there are so many spots to grab a bite, visitors to Bermuda may want to indulge in fresh seafood for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant in town. From there, visiting the various historical sites in St. George's may be a nice way to connect with the local culture and history.

To complete a perfect day in Bermuda, one could head back to their hotel, set up a viewing spot for sunset, and fall asleep under the stars. There's so much to see here!
