Trip Reviews

Off the charts awesome..

Each summer, families return to share their favorite spots and river traditions with their kids and grandkids. By switching between oar rafts, paddle rafts, and inflatable kayaks, you get to enjoy a choice of activity and challenge levels. What’s more, the Rogue’s warm water, great summer weather, and reliable flows make these trips comfortable and fun.

Wild and Scenic Rogue River Rafting Trips

Starting in the Cascades of Oregon near Crater Lake, the Rogue River travels west through the gentle, green wilds of the Klamath Mountains. First, it weaves through lush slopes of pine, cedar, and fir, before spilling over boulders and into narrow canyon gorges. Then it passes through the town of Grants Pass and into Hellgate Canyon, and finally enters the wild area at Grave Creek.

Our multi-day rafting trips travel through the rugged Siskiyou Mountains, away from roads and civilization. As well as many Class II and Class III Rapids, the river boasts one Class IV rapid, Blossom Bar (that you have the option to walk around). This popular overnight camping trip usually takes 4 days and ends at Foster Bar, about 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Boat Options

During the trip, you have a few boat options, not just one. Therefore, a lot of our visitors like to like to mix it up in a variety of boat types for a blend of exhilaration and chill.

Paddle Boat The guide sits in the back and gives paddle commands to the four to seven crew members.

Oar Boat Oar boats carry gear and supplies as well as up to four passengers. As a result, the oar boat is the most stable way to travel. A ride on an oar boat is a chance to relax, take in the views, watch for wildlife, or chat with friends and family.

Inflatable Kayak (“Ducky”) The duckies are the ultimate vessel for the active river runner. This is your chance to run the Rogue River rapids under your own steam! Before heading onto the water, the guides will give you a pre-trip briefing. On the river, they will direct you through the rapids. Helmets must be worn at all times in the duckies.

When you register for your trip, we ask you how much time you see yourself spending in each boat type. Your answers help us bring the right number of boats along.

On the River

In the mornings, our guides make coffee and breakfast before launching around 10 a.m. We typically cover 8–10 miles per day with a stop for lunch and a short hike. Around 3 or 4 p.m., we arrive in camp with plenty of time to enjoy life on land. Next, it’s time for a hearty meal cooked by our guides.

Each day of the trip has excitement built in, with the most difficult rapids tackled on day 3. After that, day 4 is a mellow drift down the river to close out your time in the wild.

At Camp on Rogue River rafting trips

If you need to cool off, there are great swimming holes (nature’s waterslides, anyone?). Afterward, you can join in some fun river games, work on your landscape photography, or maybe just fill out your journal by the water. At night, you can search for constellations and spot shooting stars.

All camping gear is free of charge, upon request.

Flora & Fauna

Getting to the rogue river.

The Rogue River canyon is within driving distance of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Airports in Portland, Oregon and Medford, Oregon serve the region.

Many of our guests fit their rafting into a week-long road trip to Southern Oregon. Attractions including Crater Lake, Oregon Caves National Monument, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, California’s Redwoods, and the Oregon Coast are nearby.

Rogue Wild and Scenic - 3 or 4 day

best rogue river rafting trips

The Wild and Scenic Rogue River in Southern Oregon, is the oldest and most popular whitewater rafting trip at Orange Torpedo Trips.   2019 was our 50th year running this trip!   The Wild and Scenic Rogue River is consistently regarded as one of the top five rafting trips in the country, and is the perfect vacation for families or adventurers who value a hot shower and a bed after their day running world-famous whitewater. The ability to float lodge to lodge on a “Wild and Scenic” river is just one of the many unique characteristics that separate rafting on the Rogue River from anywhere else. Spectacular wildlife including: bears, deer, eagles, and otters, along with world-class technical whitewater and plenty of thrilling history, makes a few days in the canyon a truly unique all-around experience. Trips down the remote gorge become the getaway with your spouse, time with your kids, or exciting vacation with friends you talk about for years.

On this wilderness trip, discover how much fun the class II and III+ rapids can be for everyone in your family.  Challenge yourself in the whitewater, expand your knowledge with stories of local indigenous tribes, reconnect with your kids as you float in the calm pools and catch up on their lives.  Get all of this incredible wilderness experience but still end the day with a hot shower, soft bed and home cooked meal.  Only on the Rogue River can you find this mix of wilderness escape and night time comfort.

We offer this trip in both a 3-day, 2-night option and a 4-day, 3 night option.  On our 4-day trip we lay-over at the second night lodge so you have a full day to sleep in, hike, fish, swim, read and generally relax before hitting the river again on the 4th day.

Trip Logistics Overview

The day your trip starts you need to arrive at our shop at 210 Merlin Rd, Merlin Oregon at 8 AM. If you are driving head west off of Interstate 5 at exit 61. At our office you will transfer your clothing for the trip into a supplied dry bag for the entirety of the float. Your vehicle will be parked inside the locked gate at our facility until you return. At the conclusion of the trip a van will pick you up at the takeout and return you to our storefront in Merlin. If you plan on driving to the coast after your trip it will be more convenient for you if your vehicle is shuttled from our facility to the rafting takeout at Foster Bar. There is a small fee associated with this so call for details. For additional travel information please refer to the travel information page for flight and hotel details.

Detailed Rogue River Wild and Scenic 3-day rafting trip itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at 8 AM at our storefront. (210 Merlin Road, Merlin, OR) to meet your head guide and receive your trip orientation. (Arrive early to purchase any last-minute items.). While at our shop your head guide will spend about 45 minutes discussing safety, river history, and paddling techniques. You will be supplied with all the equipment you need, including a life jacket, helmet (required for anyone kayaking or optional for anyone over 12 in a raft), wet suit, splash-top, a dry bag for your personal items, and a community dry bag to store items you wish to access during the day like a camera. When everyone is geared up and river ready, vans will be loaded and driven 20 minutes to the put-in at Almeda boat ramp. At the put-in you will meet the rest of your guides and prepare to head down the river.

The trip starts off with a few warm up rapids before entering the Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River at Grave Creek. This is where the adventure really begins as the roads and civilization fades into the background. You will learn your boating skills navigating famous Rogue River rapids such as Grave Creek Falls, Tyee, and Wild Cat on this first day. Sometime in the late afternoon the group will float into the first nights home, Black Bar Lodge. Expect beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and delicious food as you relax into the evening.

Day 2:  The second day is filled with plenty of rapids, history, and learning how to surf your torpedo. After a delicious breakfast the group will meet around 9:30 AM to prepare for the river.  You will navigate Horseshoe Bend before arriving at the famous Mary’s Pothole. The group will stop at this rapid so everyone can re-run the rapid until they have had their fill. This is an opportunity to shoot photos and video of your family and friends trying to run this exciting wave in the inflatable kayaks.  It’s not un-common to see families of 3 or more trying to run this together. After lunch the group may make a quick stop at Zane Greys historical cabin. After this historic stop the group paddles to Slagles’s Hole, where you can try your hand at surfing. This friendly hole is an ideal spot to learn how to ride the waves and perfect your great surfing moves like the paddle spin! When you are all surfed out, end the day at Marial Lodge. With its delicious home style food, hiking, scenery and atmosphere, you may never want to leave this historic Rogue River hideaway.

Day 3 : The last day on the water starts off with a bang! Just around the corner from the lodge is the exhilarating Mule Creek Canyon, a whitewater gorge that is truly unique. At well over a mile of almost non-stop action, the whitewater of the gorge culminates at the famous “Coffee Pot” known for it’s unique boils and whirlpools.  After the pot is an unbelievable float between vertical cliff walls with stair case waterfall cascading in on the left.  About 20 minutes later comes the Rogue River’s most famous rapid, Blossom Bar. Here we take a short portage around the upper part of the rapid before putting back in and running the fun lower section. A challenging rapid for the rafts, you will find your Torpedo slides right between the boulders with little difficulty. After more rapids and a riverside lunch, the group arrives at the takeout at Foster Bar, early in the afternoon. Change out of your river clothes while the guides de-rig the rafts. After loading the vans it’s a 2-hour drive back to our shop in Merlin.

Detailed Rogue River Wild and Scenic 4-day rafting trip itinerary

We have replaced our old 4-day trip with a new “in the canyon” 4-day trip.  On this trip the first two days are identical to our 3-day trip, but on the third day when everyone on the 3-day is waking up early and heading for the river you will be able to sleep in and have a lazy morning with a cup of coffee and a good book.  Today you layover at the lodge so you have the whole day to relax, nap, read, hike and swim.  Many people enjoy hiking down the trail to experience one of most unique trails in Oregon as the Rogue River Trial navigates the cliffs above Mule Creek Canyon.  Another great hike is up Mule Creek to the gorge on the creek which can provide some great swimming. No matter what you choose, this day of relaxing in the wilderness ends with another great night at Marial lodge where delicious food is always served and fun card games lead to laughing into the night.  The fourth day is identical to the third day on the 3-day itinerary.

Where to Meet Orange Torpedo Trips

Take exit 61 off of Interstate 5. Exit is approx. 3 miles north of Grants Pass. At exit turn left (west) and follow Merlin Rd 3.2 miles until you see Orange Torpedo Trips on right. We have a secure fenced parking lot where your car can be stored during your trip.

Accommodations

For 3-day raft trips please plan on meeting us at 8:00 AM. Due to the early hour of the day we strongly recommend staying locally the night before your trip. Here are a few of the local accommodations in the Grants Pass area.

  •  Redwood Motel Grants Pass Oregon    888-535-8824 (recommended)
  •  Magnolia Inn    541-899-0255 (Great B&B in Historic Jacksonville)
  • Bybee Historic Inn Jacksonville Oregon  877-292-3374 (tell them you are with OTT for a discount)

If you plan to camp while you’re here, we recommend Indian Mary Park (541-474-5285). The nearest RV Park is Beaver Creek RV on Merlin Rd., although Indian Mary Park also provides full RV hook-ups. We have a parking lot that will accommodate RVs while you are on your trip.

The closest commercial airport is in Medford, Oregon (airport code MFR), 34 miles southeast of our shop in Merlin. In the Medford Airport there are four car rental companies (Budget, Avis, National, Enterprise, and Hertz). At this time we do not offer transportation to or from the airport, but we can pickup and drop off at any Grants Pass Hotel the morning of a trip and at the conclusion of a trip. If you plan to not rent a car, you can call Double D Shuttles at 541-476-7773 and hire them to transport you from the Medford Airport to a Grants Pass Hotel. Please note: Our trips return too late in the day for us to ensure you will make a flight out of Medford same day. We suggest making reservations for the next day after the trip concludes.

Typical Weather

Southern Oregon is known for its great summer weather. Weather here is generally so nice that the local tourism board has adopted the slogan “its the climate” to describe what makes Southern Oregon so desirable. While rain does occasionally sneak in during the summer months it is rare and usually only stays for a short time. Averages are:

Q: Do I sign a liability release for this trip?

Yes.  On this trip you are required to sign a “release of liability” form. You can see the full form on our reservation policies page

Q: What types of boats do you use?

As on most of our trips we offer a variety of river craft to choose from. Orange Torpedo Trips is best known for inflatable kayaking with 80% of our customers choosing this as the way to go down the river, but on this trip we offer 3 types of river craft on this trip. Watch the video to learn more about our 3-boats.

Orange Torpedo

Learn to paddle your own inflatable kayak (Torpedo). We have guides in Torpedo’s teaching you how to paddle and leading you through the rapids in a 4 to 1 ratio. If you happen to fall out the guides have you out of the river in seconds. 50+ years of doing it on the Rogue River and tens of thousands of satisfied returning customers prove that it is extremely fun.

Paddle Raft

A more traditional type of rafting, paddle rafts are a great way to go if you still want to do some work, but think the torpedo is just a little to much. Work with a team of your friends paddling the big boat through the rapids as the guide sits in the back to help navigate.

Hop on an oared raft and ride in luxury. This is the relaxed way to travel. If taking in the scenery and letting the guide do the work is how you vacation then hop on board.

Q: What is an Orange Torpedo?

An Orange Torpedo is our custom-designed inflatable kayak. We designed these boats with a premier raft/inflatable builder to be high performance but also beginner friendly and they are exclusive to us.

Q: Can I switch boats during the trip?

Yes, but with some limitation. If you start in an inflatable kayak and decide quickly that it’s not for you. We will get you out of the kayak. If you start in a raft and decide you want to kayak, we cannot always guarantee that ability. Based on what people tell us they want to do we pack a specific amount of equipment and bring an appropriate number of guides for a trip. Sometimes that does not leave much room to add kayakers mid-trip. People will often be willing to switch out throughout the trip, but if someone signs up to tackle the river in an inflatable kayak, we want to make sure they have chance to paddle the entire trip if they want.

Q: Gratuity, is it common to give tips and how much?

Gratuity is certainly appreciated but by no means required. At the conclusion of a trip please just give any gratuity to the head guide who will divide it evenly among the crew. Standard restaurant gratuity % based off your per person rate tends to apply but while it is very much appreciated by the staff,  please do not feel obligated.  Also, when thinking about gratuities, please feel free to tip the staff at the lodges during your stay there.

Q: Does everything for the trip go down the river with the group?

Everything for the trip will go down the river. When you pack a dry bag at the put-in, that will be all of your stuff for the duration of the trip. All food, drinks, and camping equipment will be transported on our rafts for the entirety of the trip.

Q: What age is considered “Youth”?

Youth is 17 and under.

Q: How many years have we been running the rivers?

Orange Torpedo Trips was founded on the Rogue River in 1969 by rafting visionary, Jerry Bentley. Within just a few years OTT had spread to numerous rivers throughout the Northwest including the Klamath River, the Main Salmon River and Snake Rivers.

Q: What is our average tour guide tenure?

We are proud to have a very high average head guide tenure on our multi-day trips in Oregon. The majority of our multi-day trip guides are teachers in the off-season. This off river profession makes them naturally great guides with a desire to teach our customers about the rivers, but it also makes them stable year to year guides. The average tenure, with our company, of our head guides on the Wild and Scenic Rogue is over 20 years.

Q: What is the typical guide to guest ratio?

On the River we typically have one guide for every three to four guests on a trip but this does fluctuate and can be lower or higher based on the nature of the specific trip and the number of inflatable kayakers vs rafters on a trip.

Q: How much is the deposit and when is the balance for my trip due?

As on all OTT trips, this trip requires a 30% deposit. The remaining balance is due 30 days before the trip launches. Upon making your reservation you have the option to set up your credit card to automatically run the balance on the due date.

Q: Can I bring a CPAP Machine?

Yes, but you can’t plug them in to run at the lodges.  Here is a blog post we have written about how to make this work.

Getting There

Meeting Location

All trips meet at the Galice Resort in Galice, Oregon at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time.

We highly recommend being in the area the night before the trip and not making departing flight arrangements until the morning after the last day of the trip. If flying, make connections to Medford (MFR). Car rentals are available at the airport.  Grants Pass is 30 minutes from the Medford Airport. The Galice Resort (our meeting location) is one hour from the Airport and 30 minutes from Grants Pass.

The shuttle from our take-out back to Galice is by 15-passenger van and takes about 2 hours. The drive is very scenic but the road is narrow and windy. Outstanding Remarkable Values

Wild & Scenic River Designation - October 2, 1968

Learn about the outstanding remarkable values that makes the Rogue River such a special place and helped it to achieve protected status under the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. The Rogue River is one of the eight original rivers receiving protection from the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.

The Rogue River is home to a variety of species, including chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout and green sturgeon. The adult fish use the clean river substrate to deposit their eggs. The eggs then remain in the gravel for several months. After hatching, some species such as coho, steelhead and green sturgeon, rear within the river from one to three years, while others such as chinook begin the journey to the ocean and will eventually make their way back to their natal stream to spawn.

Recreational

The Rogue River area sees over a half million visitors each year. Recreation opportunities include driving for pleasure, boating, fishing, guided motorized tour boat trips, guided whitewater fishing and float trips, camping, hiking, swimming, picnicking, wildlife viewing, sun bathing and gold panning.

Surrounding the Rogue River, the rugged and complex canyon landscape of the Wild Rogue Wilderness was partly designed to provide watershed protection for the wild section of the Rogue River. The established boundary assured preservation of a rugged and complex canyon landscape. The area is characterized by steep terrain of near vertical cliffs, razor-sharp ridges and cascading mountain creeks. Look for diverse flora and fauna among the near-vertical cliffs, razor-sharp ridges and cascading waters of numerous mountain creeks of the Rogue River watershed.

Rogue 3-Day Lodge Trips

T he availability of lodges is a unique aspect of the Rogue River. There are very few places in the world with a system of remote riverside lodges only accessible by boat or small plane. It allows for the amazing experience of true wilderness adventure capped off by comfortable and cozy evenings in a remote lodge steeped in pioneer history. We spend each day floating down river and spend the evenings in lodges strategically places along the Rogue River corridor. The lodges are unique and offer rustic but comfortable accommodations in quiet and beautiful wilderness settings. Accommodations may include cabins or rooms. In each room you’ll find beds made up with fresh linens, bathrooms stocked with plenty of towels and hot water for showers. Meals are served family style in a dining room or on the deck. Evenings are spent relaxing on the deck with a glass of wine or beer, fishing at the river’s edge, hiking to side creeks, playing games, or enjoying the peace and quiet of a deck chair and a good book. Generally electricity is only available until around 10:00 p.m. when the generators are shut down for the evening.

Lodge trips are ideal for anyone looking for one of the most unique experiences in the world, but they are also a perfect introduction to overnight rafting and are wonderful for those who are nervous about camping. They are a way to step back in time and get a taste of the west’s pioneer history on one of the west’s original wilderness rafting trips.

What Makes Momentum Rogue Lodge Trips Unique?

Our Rogue trips are small (4 to 12 guests) and led by guides with a minimum of five years of experience leading trips around the world. Guides who truly enjoy sharing the outdoors and their outdoor experiences with others. Read more about Momentum>>

We chose our lodges carefully based on the uniqueness of the lodge and the opportunities they offer. At our first nights lodge we serve our own “Momentum” meals. We are very well known for our food and the guides will prepare a three coarse meal featuring local and organic produce and products.   Read more about our food and what our guests say about it>>

  • The second nights lodge was chosen because it has an amazing deck and by far the best riverside view. It is not uncommon to see black bear from the deck! The guides will prepare a local appetizer with wine before dinner is served by the lodge.

Typical Itinerary:

PLEASE NOTE: Lodge trips are based on double occupancy (or family rooms). There are rooms available for groups of 3+ and families. However, most of the wilderness lodges are very small and do not have space for singles wanting their own room – please contact us with any questions.

Day 1 Our trip starts near Grants Pass, Oregon at the Galice Resort, located along the banks of the Rogue River. Here we will help you pack your dry bags and get any last minute “must haves” at the resort. We then head to the river, meet the crew, and do a thorough orientation talk. After loading our gear and ourselves into the boats we push off and head into the Rogue River Canyon.  For three days we will float the Rogue as it cuts through the remote and wild Siskiyou Mountain Range. The canyon is home to abundant wildlife including bear, river otter, dear, bald eagles, and osprey.

The first day includes Rainy falls, a hike to the historic Whiskey Creek minor’s cabin, and numerous chances to swim in some of the beautiful side streams. The side streams of the Rogue are almost unmatched in there frequency, beauty, and pristine state – we will take time every day to visit at least one. For inflatable kayakers day one also offers perhaps the biggest mix of rapids. We will stop for lunch along the way at one of the many beautiful spots along the banks. Our day on the water ends in the late afternoon where we pull over in the middle of Big Windy Canyon at our first wilderness lodge.

Black Bar is a rustic lodge that is only accessible by boat or small plane – it is simple yet comfortable and brimming with pioneer history. The lodge offers comfortable cabins with linens, beds, and private bathrooms with hot showers.  Evenings at the lodge are spent relaxing on the deck with a glass of wine or beer, fishing at the river’s edge, hiking to side creeks, or enjoying the peace and quiet of a deck chair and a good book. Hors d-oeuvres and wine will be served on the deck while we prepare a fresh and filling dinner for all. We are famous for our food and chose this lodge because we can serve our own “Momentum” meals. The evening will be capped off with dessert and views of a night sky filled with stars and free of any light pollution.

Day 2  After a restful night’s sleep, we wake to the morning and coffee and tea on the deck. A filling and delicious breakfast is served and we will have plenty of time for an extra cup of coffee before pushing off again. Some of our morning stops may include the beautiful Kelsey Creek and its tranquil swimming hole, Battle Bar and its rich Native American history, and Zane Grey’s historic cabin.

After lunch, we head into the narrow and spectacular Mule Creek Canyon.  Mule Creek Canyon is one of the most unique canyons in the world, and for many it the highlight of the trip. For a short part of the canyon you can float in only a life jacket through its calm swirling waters – there are very few sensations like it.  The infamous and feared Blossom Bar rapid follows.  Blossom Bar was dynamited in the early 1900’s to allow boats passage. It is still an impressive rapid but with the proper guiding it is enjoyed by generations of friends and family.

Night two is spent at Paradise Lodge. Like Black Bar Lodge Paradise is set deep in the wilderness and is only accessible by boat, small plane, or on foot. The lodge sits atop a river terrace overlooking the water and has a large deck. The deck has one of the most beautiful views of the trip and many times includes Black Bear wandering the water’s edge.   Paradise also offers very comfortable rooms with linens, hot showers, rustic pine post furniture, and fireplaces.  Dinner is served by the lodge and is hearty and filling, the perfect end for a wonderful day on the river. Evenings are spent hiking around the lodge grounds, swimming in Paradise Creek, or just relaxing on the deck, enjoying a glass of wine and stories from the day.

Day 3 Morning comes once again with coffee, tea and sun on the deck. If you are an early riser, the Rogue River trail is a wonderful way to start your day with a brisk walk along the river. After breakfast, it is back to the rooms to pack our bags, and then time to head downstream.

Our third day includes yet another scenic inner gorge, beautiful side canyons and swimming holes, some great jumping rocks, and a bald eagle rookery. We will also has some of the best opportunities to see Black Bear. We reach the end of our river trip in the early afternoon. You then either load up in our van to make the drive back over beautiful Bear Camp road to Galice Resort or make the short half hour trip to the Oregon coast to continue your vacation.

An enchanting family vacation.

best rogue river rafting trips

Everyone loves the Rogue! The river is beautiful, but in that unassuming, natural, comfortable, not-flashy kind of way; like it would look good in sweat pants and a T-shirt, in the morning. No stunning, cover-of-National-Geographic vistas, just mile after mile of gentle prettiness. Same with the rapids, no real heart-stoppers or poster-shots, just mile after mile of fun, straightforward, manageable drops and chutes; frequent, but not frenzied. It has its moments, like at Mule Creek Canyon where the whole river channels down into a narrow, walled-in gorge and rushes through a mile-long stretch of lively whitewater, but for the most part, this is just an easy place to be. The water is that perfect-for-swimming temperature; we take lots of different kinds of boats, from ridiculously relaxing oar rafts to dial-your-own-thrill-level inflatable kayaks; there are tons of side-streams; there are good campsites with great swimming opportunities; a few short hikes, a few historic cabins, and so much wildlife that you may get tired of watching osprey dive for fish. For kids it’s like a playground; for parents, well, it’s like taking your kids to the playground.

More about the Rogue River

The Rogue River is born on the slopes of the Klamath Mountains surrounding Crater Lake. It flows west past the towns of Medford and Grants Pass before carving a wild and remote canyon through the coastal range of the Siskiyou Mountains. It is here, in the beautiful, heavily forested, “Wild Rogue” canyon, that our trips take place.

The canyon slopes are blanketed with stands of douglas fir, ponderosa pine, madrone, and numerous varieties of oak. Ferns, wildflowers, and blackberries flourish up the numerous side streams. Abundant wildlife inhabits the canyon and we commonly see deer, otter, osprey, bald eagles, and an occasional black bear. The river itself follows a diverse course, alternately crashing over abrupt ledges, flattening into shallow expanses, and squeezing between house-sized boulders or through narrow gorges. There are rapids every day with highlights at Mule Creek Canyon and Blossom Bar on day 3 or 4.

There are also numerous sites of historical interest along the way. While the original inhabitants, the Siletz Indians, left little behind, a decaying legacy of the miners, homesteaders, and hermits who followed still remains. Old miner’s shacks, historical ranches, and even Zane Grey’s fishing cabin provide a glimpse into the region’s past.

In 1968, the Rogue was one of the first rivers to be declared a National Wild and Scenic River, protecting its wild beauty for future generations, such as ours, to enjoy.

A typically beautiful campsite on the Rogue River in Oregon with ARTA river trips

I can’t say enough about your guides. They all really helped make the trip one of the greatest vacations my kids and I have ever been on.

A special way to see the Rogue

best rogue river rafting trips

One night of peaceful, wilderness camping along the shores of the river and one night of rustic luxury at a wilderness lodge. One evening of cold beer around the crackling campfire and one evening of cocktails on the porch. One dinner cooked by our guides and enjoyed with our toes in the sand and one dinner prepared by the lodge and served around big tables in the dining room. One night of star-gazing and then another night of star-gazing. (And, let’s not forget, one night of groover and one night of indoor plumbing). This might be the most relaxing river trip we offer.

We offer a few scheduled Lodge or Camp-Lodge trips on the Rogue every summer and we can arrange more by request. Details here. Contact us if you are interested. 209-962-7873.

Your Rafting Trip on the Rogue River

There’s an amazing thing that happens when you push off onto a multi-day river trip. It’s a sense of relief, of freedom, of being able to finally relax. There is always a build up of anticipation, of what to expect, but then suddenly, magically, you are rounding the bend and embarking on a new adventure. As the road and signs of civilization disappear you will discover that life on the river is simple – be curious, look around, and discover a world without the distractions of modern day life.[/col-two-last]

Perhaps the best part of a river trip is that you get to experience a wonderful place with people who mean the most to you. Whether you are traveling with friends or family or both, you will find that relationships are strengthened under stars, in wilderness, and on rivers with whitewater and challenge.

Our trips are designed to comfortably share with you a place we believe to be precious and unique to Southern Oregon. The Wild & Scenic Rogue River shares qualities of many other multi-day river trips, but it is one of the few that holds so many outstanding qualities. We believe you will remember your trip as one of the best vacations you’ve ever taken, and we look forward to sharing it with you.

During the Day on the river

The Rogue River is the perfect vacation for a group of individuals with different ideas of what the “perfect” river trip truly means. Whether you want to have an active vacation with lots of kayaking and hiking or you prefer to kick back and enjoy the ride, the Rogue River offers many different experiences that will match exactly what you are looking for in a vacation.

Our nights at camp

Our camps on the Rogue River are far from “roughing it” – in fact some of our guests have referred to the Indigo Creek Outfitters style of camping as “glamping” (Glorious Camping). Each day, a large supply boat goes downstream ahead of our group to set-up camp. When we arrive, tents and the rest of camp are completely set-up. We brings chairs, tables, and a kitchen to make camp feel more like home. In fact, you might think of our trips as a mobile bed and breakfast.

Indigo Creek Outfitters guides are superb camp chefs and you will be impressed with the variety of delicious, fresh, and wholesome meals that are offered throughout the trip. Food is often certified organic and sourced from local and regional providers.

Trip Highlights

  • 36 miles of outstanding whitewater and fun rapids surrounded by an incredible river canyon.
  • Gorgeous river side camps with great views, swimming holes, and extra-comfortable tent sites.
  • Historical sites and old homesteads that are only accessible from the river.
  • Amazing hikes up side creeks and along the river, including the famous “Rogue River Trail.”
  • Wildlife everywhere – from eagles to bear, to otter and salmon, the Rogue is home to many.

The “Wild & Scenic” Designation

“… certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations…” – Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, October 2, 1968

Our Special Use Permit

Indigo Creek Outfitters operates under Special Use Permits from the Bureau of Land Management, Medford District and the U.S. Forest Service. The Oregon State Marine Board licenses our activities. Our permit and license are your assurance that Indigo Creek Outfitters is legally outfitting on the river. Our operations and facilities are operated on a non-discriminatory basis.

Inevitably you may have some questions about your Rogue River multi-day trip. Our office is available to answer any questions you might have and to also be a resource for planning your visit to the Rogue River. We are based in Phoenix, Oregon and have lots of local tips to make your visit to Southern Oregon not only a wonderful vacation but also as easy as possible. We are available via phone at 541-282-4535 or email ([email protected]). Below are some important details about your trip. We’ve also tried to address the most common questions we get regarding our multi-day trips.

Professional Guide Tips and Tricks

“Pack your clothing into a soft duffel bag or laundry bag so that it is easily fits in the dry bag next to other items. Use small ziplock bags to organize medicine and toiletries. My ‘must have’ is a pillow. Bring one and you’ll sleep like a king (or queen).” – Nick Pabst, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Dietary Requests and Food Allergies

With advance notice we are happy to accommodate most dietary requests. At the time of your reservation we try to collect as much information as possible to make your trip perfect for you. This includes food preferences, requests, and allergies. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to update your roster information, please call our office at 541-282-4535 or email [email protected].

We typically have a few different boats to choose from:

1. Oar boats – these rafts carry the majority of our gear and also provide a comfortable place to kick back and relax as your guide rows the boat downstream.

2. Paddle boats – these rafts are more participatory and passengers will have a paddle to help move the boat downstream. A guide in the back controls the raft with oars while giving instruction to the crew.

3. Inflatable kayaks (aka “duckies) – The most active way to head downstream is in an inflatable kayak. These boats are fast, super maneuverable, and an absolute blast to run through rapids. You’ll follow a paddle boat and the guide will give you pointers for each rapid.

Over the course of each day you will have the opportunity to change boats.

“Everyone should try out the inflatable kayaks at some point during the trip. If you are nervous, talk to a guide about ‘testing’ one at camp the first night. That way you can get a feel for the boat and how stable they are without actually heading downstream through rapids. Practicing in flat water at camp will build your confidence. Before you know it you’ll be charging through rapids.” – Tyler “TJ” Vandehey, Indigo Creek Outfitters

What is the typical weather like on the Rogue River?

In Southern Oregon we like to say that “if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.” In other words, weather can change really quickly and you should be prepared for sun, rain, hot, and cold weather throughout your trip. Mornings can be cool (down to 50 degrees) and afternoons can be hot (100 degrees), so having a variety of clothing will help you be comfortable.

Average Highs / Lows in fahrenheit April: 64 / 40 May: 72 / 45 June: 80 / 50 July: 89 / 55 August: 89 / 54 September: 82 / 47 October: 69 / 41

The Rogue River is dam-controlled by the William Jess Dam, which forms Lost Creek Lake. This is a large dam that creates a storage capacity of 315,000 acre feet and supplies the Rogue River with an adequate flow for rafting year round. There are numerous tributaries to the Rogue River downstream of the dam that can also add a substantial amount of water to the river. Thus, if there are rain or snow melt events the river can rise and fall regardless of the outflow from William Jess Dam. There are a number of USGS gauges that measure the water flow and temperature of the river. The most common one to look at for the Wild & Scenic Rogue River is the Agness gauge. The town of Agness is located a few miles downstream of our take out location (Foster Bar).

In the United States, most rivers are measured in “Cubic Feet Per Second,” or in river guide lingo “CFS.” One cubic foot is similar to the box a basketball is packaged in. Our guides have run the Rogue when flows in Agness have ranged from 800 CFS to 90,000 CFS (yes, the river gets high – read the trip report here ). Here is the current and predicted flow from Agness:

Yes, absolutely. Cans are best but we can also take glass bottles. We have safe storage space in dry boxes and coolers. For obvious safety reasons, we do not provide access to alcoholic beverages while on the river.

“Don’t put your bottle of wine in your dry bag. It will break and your clothes and sleeping bag will smell like white wine for the rest of the trip. Give it to a guide and we’ll put it in a cooler for you.” – Thorn Lyons, Indigo Creek Outfitters

The large dry bag measures 16″ in diameter and 25″ tall when closure is rolled to maximum volume. We also provide a smaller dry bag that you have access to throughout the day. Please limit your personal items to these bags. If you have additional items we can probably accommodate them, but please contact our office so we know ahead of time. Call us at 541-282-4535 or [email protected].

We are proud to offer the best sleeping pads made for river trips to our guests. These are “Jack’s Plastic Super Paco Sleeping Pads” that are ultra-comfortable, thick, and extremely durable. They are, without question, the most comfortable sleeping pad offered by any outfitter on the Rogue River.

“Since Paco Pads are waterproof and inflatable, try floating on yours in an eddy next to camp when the afternoon heat peaks.” – Emily Berlant, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Depending on where we camp, there will either be an outhouse or porta-potty set-up near camp. If we have a porta-potty, we always will have it set-up in a private location that is easily accessed from camp. We use an indicator (normally a paddle) to show whether the “bathroom” is in use.

“At some point before the sun goes down, scout out the path to the bathroom. When it’s the middle of the night you’ll appreciate the foresight in knowing exactly where it’s located, rather than looking for it in the dark.” – Kacy Carlson, Indigo Creek Outfitters

Spiders, snakes, and Bears – Oh my!

We’ll be traveling through a wilderness area that is home to many creatures. It is very common over the course of our trips to see bear, deer, bald eagles, and other wildlife. For the most part, these animals are harmless and not interested in what we are doing. We do take precautions to keep human and wildlife interactions to a minimum and these will be discussed by our guides before your trip and at camp.

Yes, absolutely. We’ve had guitars, harmonicas, banjos, and even a bagpipe on the river. Let our office know ahead of time if you will need a special waterproof bag for your instrument.

Your trip on the Rogue River will take you through an impressive wilderness canyon nestled against the Rogue River Mountain range. All of our trips start and end at the same place, but the details for each day may vary due to the same natural factors that make rivers so appealing – natural changes like water levels and weather may cause us to adjust our itinerary for safety reasons and to enhance your trip. Below is a sample itinerary of an Indigo Creek Outfitters trip on the Wild & Scenic Rogue River.

Day 1: Galice to Kelsey Canyon (Mile 0 to 15.5)

On the day of your trip we will meet you at the Galice Resort at 9:00 a.m. It’s encouraged that you arrive early to grab breakfast and any last minute items you may need. Galice has a restaurant as well as a retail store for last-minute items (water bottles, fishing licenses, etc.). Most of our guests stay the night prior to their trip at Galice or in the nearby area.

9:00 a.m. – Look for an Indigo Creek Outfitters bus or truck in the parking area at Galice Resort. After introductions, our guides will provide you with a large dry bag for you to pack your items. Additionally, you’ll receive a smaller dry “day bag” that can be accessible throughout the day. The large dry bag will be stored in our “camp boat” and will be downstream of the group, so it’s important to not pack anything you may need during the day in this bag.

Once you have packed your bags, we will move your vehicle to Galice’s overnight parking area (it will stay at Galice for the duration of the trip). From Galice, we’ll drive the group to our boat launch, located a few miles downstream of Galice Resort. There you’ll be introduced to the remaining crew, we’ll do a pre-trip “safety talk,” hop in the rafts and begin our trip downstream.

Over the course of the day you’ll be able to move from one boat to another.

12:30 p.m. – We’ll stop for lunch mid-day. Our food is delicious and we can accommodate most food preferences or allergies (let us know ahead of time please). Over the course of the trip you will be surprised by the quality of our dishes and variety of foods our guides are able to prepare in a wilderness setting.

Stopped for lunch on the Rogue River

That afternoon… A typical afternoon on the Rogue will include a few hours of river time as well as a scenic or historical stop to take a breather. The Rogue River canyon is full of off-the-beaten-path areas that are well worth exploring. Some are on the river, some are up side creeks, and some are in little-known places that you’ll only find with people who know the river well.

Adjacent to the river is the well-known “Rogue River Trail.” Some of our guests appreciate a new perspective and may spend part of their day hiking the trail. It offers gorgeous views of the river and is easily accessible throughout the day.

We will be arriving at our first night camp around 4:00 p.m. Your tent will have been set-up and our camping area will have been converted to a home-away-from-home, including a dining table, chairs, and kitchen. A bathroom is easily accessed and is located in a private area a short walk from camp.

Camping along the Rogue River

5:00 p.m. – Appetizers are ready. Kick back and relax. Go on a short hike. Drink some wine (or Oregon microbrew, or soda, or water). Play horseshoes. Go for a swim. Take a nap.

6:00 p.m. – Dinner is ready. It’s going to be a great meal so dig in, have seconds, and leave the dishes to us. Have some dessert and then relax around the campfire. Tell stories and look up at the brightest stars you’ve ever seen.

Night 1: dusk on the Rogue River

There is something about being outside all day, along the river, and eating delicious and healthy food, being away from electronics and out of cell phone range, that leads to a great night of sleep. Don’t be surprised if you turn in early.

Day 2: Kelsey Canyon to Solitude Bar (Mile 15.5 to 28.5)

In the morning… Wake up to the sound of the river. There’s no beating the quiet and peacefulness of morning on the river. Long before the sun begins to heat up the river canyon we’ll have a big pot of coffee ready for you. Our guides drink coffee – a lot of it – and if you are a coffee drinker you’ll appreciate our local Southern Oregon “cowboy” coffee. If you prefer tea there will be a variety of teas available. Have a cup or two or three or four while our crew prepares breakfast.

During breakfast, an Indigo Creek guide will describe the day ahead and give you an overview of what to expect. While we’re doing the dishes and packing up the kitchen you can start packing your bag and getting ready for a day on the river. Put some sunblock on, fill up your water bottle and maybe grab one more cup of coffee. Our guides are packing up the boats and we’ll be on the water shortly…

There are a number of fun rapids this morning and a highlight will be stopping at Zane Grey’s cabin for a short hike. Keep your camera accessible because this section of river has a ton of wildlife (look for bear, deer, osprey, otter, and bald eagle). We’ve heard from some guests who say a trip on the Rogue is like being in a Planet Earth film. We agree.

Lunch at the Rogue River Ranch… One of the more historic places on the Rogue River is the Rogue River Ranch. We’ll stop here for lunch and to check out the old ranch (no longer active) and explore Mule Creek. There is a wonderful swimming hole up the creek and you’ll enjoy the refreshingly cold waters as an escape from the Southern Oregon heat.

Visiting the Rogue River Ranch

In the afternoon… We are headed into the wildest section of whitewater on the trip. The back-to-back Mule Creek and Blossom Bar duo is one of the most famous sets of rapids in the west. We have specific safety procedures for inflatable kayaks on this stretch of river and your guides will discuss the plan at lunch. We always provide the option of hiking the trail, although we really think you’ll appreciate the ride and view from the rafts. Rafting through Mule Creek Canyon is an experience like no other and will leave a lasting impression. The narrow slot canyon that the river carves and boils through is an amazing testament to the power of nature.

Entering Mule Creek Canyon on the Rogue River

Once through Mule Creek Canyon there is a moment of calm and then the roar of Blossom Bar as we round the bend. Blossom Bar is a long rapid nearly two football fields long that presents a technical challenge to any river runner. Our rafts will weave their way through the boulder field and before you know it we’ll be looking back upstream toward Oregon’s most famous rapid.

The river calms as we leave Blossom Bar and head to camp. We’ll float past the waterfall of Paradise Creek, through the serene and quiet still waters of Huggins Canyon, and arrive at our home-away-from-home, Solitude Bar, around 4:00 p.m. Like the previous night, we’ll settle in, enjoy a glass of wine, eat a well-earned dinner, and tell tales of the river before dozing off to a good nights sleep.

Camping at Lower Solitude on the Rogue River

Day 3: Solitude Bar to Galice Resort (Mile 28.5 to 35.5)

It might not be until you wake up on the last day of your trip that you’ll realize the importance of wild places. Wild places like the Rogue River offer a solitude and feeling of peace that is impossible to find in an ordinary lifestyle. A trip to the Wild & Scenic Rogue River is one of just a few places you can find a reset button that forces one to naturally refocus on the important things in life. Whether that is reconnecting with old friends or spending time with loved ones, a river trip fosters connections with important places and people and offers a refreshing perspective that can only be found in a beautiful river canyon away from modern day distractions.

This morning on the river is similar to the previous day (hearty breakfast, lots of coffee, and a beautiful stretch of river), but with the knowledge that you’ll be returning to civilization – to your car, cell service, and a paved road headed back home. There is always a feeling of sadness to say goodbye to new friends and the Rogue River, but you will find a sense of accomplishment to know that you won’t go through life without having seen the Wild & Scenic Rogue River. There is additional relief in knowing that the Rogue River and your wilderness “home-away-from-home” can always be visited again the following year.

After lunch on the river it is a short float to Foster Bar, which is where our time on the river comes to a close. From Foster Bar we transport back to Galice Resort over the scenic “Bear Camp Road.” We are normally back to Galice Resort around 4:00 p.m.

Morrisons Rogue Wilderness Adventures

Rafting Adventures

Few rivers offer a wide variety of benefits that make Oregon’s Wild & Scenic Rogue River one of the best all-around rafting trips in North America. Recognized for its, numerous but mostly moderate rapids, dependable water levels, and predictable summer sunshine that offer the perfect opportunity to get away for days with family and friends for a unique and memorable river rafting adventure.

Rugged and remote, the Rogue delivers post-card-perfect views with lush evergreen forests and rocky gorges as the river carves a dramatic canyon through the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon. Rafters are treated to an abundance of wildlife with bald eagles, osprey, river otters and black bears a common sight along the river. The 34-mile section of the Wild & Scenic stretch of the Rogue offers fun and adventure: A rich and fascinating history, complete with epic Indian battles, hermit feuds and the wild exploits of pioneering river runners give a depth of character to the river. Best of all, the Rogue River rewards rafters with over 50 rated rapids in 34 miles. Most of the rapids are fun and splashy but moderate (Class II and III), with Class IV Mule Creek Canyon and Blossom Bar providing the most memorable thrills.

With mostly moderate rapids a Rogue River rafting trip is perfectly appropriate for many different rafting skills. Scenic riverside camps and plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, relaxing and exploring make the time spent off the river fun and enjoyable. You’ll find everything that’s best about a river trip on the Wild & Scenic Rogue. Rafters have two choices in gaining access to this amazing area. First, you can use a knowledgeable outfitter . The second option is to apply for a permit and do a self-guided adventure on your own which requires a per person permit.

The land in this area is managed in cooperation with the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.  I f you love planning your own rafting adventure, permits are necessary for rafting in some areas and can be secured from the BLM . Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules & regulations to ensure a safe and respectful trip.

Here are some commonly asked questions:

How high are the rapids.

Rapids are classed on a scale from 1 to 6. The Wild and Scenic Rogue River includes rapids ranging from Class 1, 2, 3, and two Class 4 rapids that are easily walked around if preferred. The following explains each classification:

Class I  (easy) – Moving water with small waves that can tug a boat. This is the calmest class, with minimal maneuvering required. Class II  (novice) – Easy rapids, with waves up to 3 ft tall that are easily seen, and wide channels. Some maneuvering required. Class III  (intermediate) – Offer plenty of excitement with waves up to 4 ft and narrow passages that send the boat shimmying and water gushing over its sides. Class IV  (advanced) – Long, difficult rapids, with turbulent water that requires precise maneuvering. Guaranteed to get your heart racing! There may be dangerous rocks or boiling eddies. Precise maneuvering required, and you should be accompanied by an experienced guide.  Class V   (expert) – A constant adrenaline rush. Long and violent rapids that follow each other almost without interruption. Paddlers should have Class IV or better whitewater experience, and go with experienced guides who know the river. Class VI (extreme) – Considered “un-runnable” and have rarely been attempted due to their difficulty, unpredictability, and danger.  This is the most dangerous class and should only be attempted by a team of experts.

What about children?

It depends on the child and the challenge of your specific rafting trip. It is a fascinating, rewarding experience for a child who is prepared for an outdoor challenge, and who can easily adjust to the company of adults and the discipline that water and river safety requires. You know your child best. Most outfitters will have a minimum age for each whitewater raft trip and all our recommended outfitters run family friendly Rogue trips. Most children are mature enough around age 6. Remember: it’s OK to ask if there are other children on the trip for your children to interact with.

How strenuous is whitewater rafting?

You will be active, but if you are in moderately good physical condition, the challenge will not strain you. There is little danger if you follow the safety rules in Whitewater rafting, do what your guide tells you and don’t try to swim or paddle beyond your skills.

What happens if you need to go to the bathroom?

On the Wild and Scenic Section, the lodges have bathrooms for guests, and some campsites have outhouses. You can choose to rent a riverside toilet system to ensure a bathroom is always available on stops. We also recommend you carry WAG bags (or GO-anywhere toilet kits), for those emergency situations. They are sanitary, safe, environmentally-friendly, and come complete with toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

What do we wear?

Dressing safely and comfortably (not to mention fashionable) for river trips is a challenging task. It is very important and should not be taken lightly. For much of the season, you will need two sets of clothing: one for on the river and one for camp or lodge. During the day shorts, swimsuit, water sandals, hat, and sunglasses are best. Sun protection is always a priority. There is no shade on the river. For your safety on the water, we alway recommend you wear a life jacket and helmet . Keep items not in use dry by storing them in a dry bag .

What do we bring?

For a comprehensive list, see our Itinerary and Gear List page .

What if I can't swim?

Don’t be too concerned. It’s more of a question of how comfortable are you in the water. Wear your Personal Floatation Device (life jacket) at all times. In rivers, you go with the flow and work your way toward shore. It doesn’t require much swimming skill. You might want to float some small rapids in your PFD, with a person you trust and then decide if whitewater rafting is for you.

Where do I stay?

Morrisons Lodge is our preferred lodging location in our area for convenient orientation and launching of your trip. Nearby campgrounds, such as  Indian Mary, Griffin Park, and Almeda Park also take reservations. For reservations call 1-800-452-5687 or visit www.reserveamerica.com

What about my vehicle?

We are offer several  shuttling services , whether you and your gear need transportation back to your vehicle, or you would like your vehicle safely stored and delivered to your final destination.

  • When Is the Best Time of Year to Raft the Rogue River in Oregon?

What Is the Best Time of Year to Raft the Rogue River, Oregon?

Considered one of the United States’ best whitewater rafting and kayaking destinations, the Rogue River flows from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean in Southern Oregon . It boasts breathtaking scenery, thrilling rapids , and incredible wildlife sightings, making it an ideal multi-day trip for families and experienced paddlers alike.

If you’re considering a rafting trip on the Rogue River , you might be wondering when the best time to go is. In our opinion, it’s whenever we have availability! That being said, there are some seasonal differences on and around the river that will appeal to different people. In this guide, we’ll share with you our insights about the nuanced differences of each month to help you make up your mind.

The Rogue River rafting season extends from late May until early October when the weather and river conditions are at their best. Daytime temperatures range from the low 80s to around 90, with May and September experiencing the coolest weather and the highest chance of rain. While the weather might not be ideal for swimming, these months are perfect if you want to avoid the crowds as school is back in session and most people are back at work.

Rogue River in Late May to mid-June while people walk around Rainie Falls on a sunny day

Late May to mid-June

Early in the season (late May to mid-June) is perfect for our raft-supported hiking tours , which roughly follow the banks of the Rogue River. They take in cascading waterfalls, rugged canyons, and babbling brooks, surrounded by a majestic display of wildflowers. The color displays reach their peak in mid-May but there are always some wildflowers still in bloom late in the season.

For bird lovers, this is the time to come for sightings of bald eagles and newly born mergansers trailing their moms. Flow levels on the river tend to be a little higher in May and June as the mountain snow melts and makes it's way downstream towards the Pacific Ocean. We recommend this time of year for anyone interested in hiking and bird watching!

ROW Adventures Rogue river Cabin

Mid-June to mid-August

These months mark the prime season for whitewater rafting along the Rogue River, and it's not hard to see why this stretch of time is favored by adventurers. During this period, the Rogue River boasts ideal water levels, ensuring thrilling rapids and an exhilarating ride for rafters of all skill levels. The weather in the region this time of year is typically warm and sunny, providing near perfect conditions for rafting, hiking, cliff jumping, and more! This time of year also coincides with peak wildlife activity along the Rogue River Corridor, offering rafters the chance to float past bald eagles, ospreys, and deer amidst the stunning natural scenery.

With longer daylight hours, there's ample time to explore the river and its surroundings, whether navigating rapids or simply enjoying leisurely floats. Families will find the summer months particularly inviting for rafting excursions, as the warmer weather and calmer water conditions make for comfortable and enjoyable experiences for all ages. The summer season sees a bustling river community come alive along the Rogue, adding to the excitement and camaraderie of the rafting experience.

Once the heat of July arrives, our lodge-based rafting trips are in full swing and the temperatures are perfect for swimming in the river and the waterfall pools. It’s worth keeping in mind that the nighttime temperatures along the river can still be cool throughout July and August, so ensure you bring warm clothes for the evenings.

Blackberries begin to ripen in late July (and we always pause to snack on them whenever we can) and your chances of spotting fawns at the Black Bar Lodge are the most favorable during this period. For those looking to make friends along the river, have ample time to swim, and enjoy creature comforts of lodge-based travels, mid summer is ideal.

ROW Adventures rafting the Rogue River in Mid-August to mid September going through a rapid

Mid-August to Mid September

By mid-August/early-September, the weather begins to cool and this is the best time to spot bears along the banks of the  Rogue River.  They’re lured here to feast on steelhead trout as the fish make their annual migration upstream. Salmon can also be seen jumping at Rainie Falls from mid-to-late summer and this is an ideal time for spotting snowy egrets and cormorants. With the summer heat beginning to mellow and the days becoming slightly shorter, daytime temperatures are comfortably warm, making outdoor activities enjoyable and refreshing. Clear skies and abundant sunshine contribute to breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall experience of rafting through the rugged canyons and lush forests of the Rogue River.

Another compelling reason to raft the Rogue River during this time is the relative lack of crowds compared to the peak summer months. With school back in session and vacation season winding down, the river sees fewer visitors, allowing rafters to enjoy a more intimate and peaceful experience on the water. This creates a sense of solitude and serenity, enhancing the connection with nature and the overall enjoyment of the journey.

Birds eye view of a camp site set up on a sandy beach along the Rogue River Corridor

Mid September to Mid October

In September, we begin our camping-based rafting trips, which will see you sleeping under the stars while enjoying the crisp fall air. As the nights get shorter, the stargazing gets more impressive, although we do moon gaze earlier in the season using our telescope at the Black Bar Lodge. If you’re a keen angler, then fall is the best time to visit, with the opportunity to lure a variety of salmon and trout species.

During the tail end of the summer, the Rogue River maintains inviting water levels. Additionally, the weather during this period is characterized by mild temperatures and crisp autumn air, offering comfortable conditions for daytime adventures and cozy evenings at camp. The fall foliage paints the riverbanks in vibrant hues of gold and crimson, enhancing the scenic beauty of the surroundings and providing a picturesque backdrop for camping under the stars. With the summer crowds tapering off, rafters can relish a more serene and intimate experience on the river, immersed in the tranquility of the wilderness. As the days gradually shorten, guests can witness breathtaking sunsets over the Rogue River canyon, adding a touch of magic to their journey. These early fall camping trips feel nostalgic as we want the sun set on summer over the river corridor. It’s a quiet time of year along the Rogue allowing us more time to explore hidden corners of the Rogue River wilderness.
