8 Best Q Quotes In Star Trek: The Next Generation

The enigmatic Q provides many life lessons for Captain Picard as the Enterprise journeys through outer space.

  • Q is a god-like entity with a perverse sense of humor who forms a love/hate relationship with Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Q's role is to guide and challenge humanity rather than destroy it, as he often sets obstacles that the Enterprise-D can overcome.
  • Q is a memorable character due to his irritating but not-quite-evil nature, his contrast of humor and menace, and his role as a foil to the staid Picard.

There are many strange and exciting things to be discovered in the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation , from mind-bending anomalies to foes like the Klingons or Borg. But one of the strangest forces encountered by the Enterprise-D during its long-term exploration mission was Q (John de Lancie), a god-like entity with an especially perverse sense of humor.

Best Picard Quotes In Star Trek: The Next Generation

Q is both an occasional ally to and a thorn in the side, of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The two characters develop something of a love/hate relationship as their various encounters bring them face to face with alternate timelines, scientific conundrums, and deadly threats to the Federation.

8 "Generosity has always been my weakness."

"encounter at farpoint" (season 1, episodes 1 and 2).

Q's initial challenge for the human race is to solve the mystery of Farpoint Station. Picard and his crew realize that they need to free a powerful alien from captivity.

Q's comment about his apparent generosity is interesting, as it suggests that, for all his theatrics about presiding over the future of humanity, a part of him wants Picard to succeed. He does not set obstacles that the Enterprise -D is unable to overcome, demonstrating that the entity is interested in guiding humanity rather than destroying it.

7 "Sometimes I think the only reason I come here is to listen to these wonderful speeches of yours."

"True Q" (Season 6, Episode 6)

Q and Picard cannot exactly be called friends, but their banter is a key feature of their complicated relationship. In "True Q", Q responds to Picard's monologue about the differing moralities of the Q Continuum and the Federation by playfully complimenting Picard's custom of taking every opportunity to give a self-important lecture. Yet the pair have genuine affection for one another, despite their differing perspectives.

6 Weirdest Star Trek Easter Eggs

It is this tension that helps to make Q such a memorable character. He is irritating, rather than evil, and there is a certain method to his madness. Indeed, Q's jester-like qualities make him the perfect foil for the staid Picard, resulting in one of Star Trek 's greatest double acts.

6 "Change is at the heart of what you are. But change into what? That's the question."

"hide and q" (season 1, episode 9).

The Next Generation 's writers often complained that Gene Roddenberry's enlightened humanity limited the kind of stories they could tell, but some contributors were still able to show enduring human flaws even in the enlightened twenty-fourth century. In "Hide and Q", the titular super-being tempts Commander Riker by offering to have him join the powerful Q.

Riker ultimately chooses to remain as a human, despite the great powers that the Q Continuum offers. However, both the episode and Q's dialogue demonstrate that, for all its advances, the human race has not finished evolving into its final form.

5 "They're simply interested in your ship, its technology. They've identified it as something they can consume."

"q who" (season 2, episode 16).

  • "The Borg is the ultimate user. They're unlike any threat your Federation has ever faced. They're not interested in political conquest, wealth, or power as you know it. They're simply interested in your ship, its technology. They've identified it as something they can consume."

Q's doom-laden speech about the Borg sets out a new status quo that would come to define not only the remainder of The Next Generation , but would also inform shows like Deep Space Nin e , Voyager , Enterprise , and even Star Trek: Picard .

John de Lancie demonstrates considerable skills as a comedy actor throughout his time on Star Trek , but his chilling speech about the Borg demonstrates that the powerful Q is as menacing as he is humorous. This contrast is part of what makes Q such a legendary character in the Star Trek mythos.

4 "No feelings. No emotions. No pain. And yet you covet those qualities of humanity."

"deja q" (season 3, episode 13).

  • "There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings. No emotions. No pain. And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you're missing nothing. But if it means anything to you - you're a better human than I."

While some episodes of The Next Generation examined how humans reacted to becoming part of the Q Continuum, "Deja Q" reversed the equation and showed the consequences of Q becoming human. Q struggles to adjust to his new condition, including the need for sleep.

Star Trek: 8 Best Holodeck Creations Ever

Q discusses his newfound humanity with Data, who longs to be more human. In the scene, Q demonstrates a touching sympathy towards the android , pointing out that Data is more human than Q can ever be. Once Q regains his powers, he uses them to make Data experience laughter for the first time, demonstrating that, for all his tricks, Q is capable of good deeds.

3 "It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

  • "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

While the second season of The Next Generation is generally regarded as one of the show's weaker years (due in part to industry strikes), it holds the distinction of introducing one of science fiction's most iconic threats : the Borg.

Picard complains that the meeting with the Borg has resulted in the deaths of several of the Enterprise 's crew. Q is unrepentant: he points out that space is a dangerous place to explore, and that Picard should expect to face significant obstacles during his voyages. However, given that the alternative is to miss out on the wonders of the cosmos, Q believes that Picard and his crew must be brave.

2 "He's the person you wanted to be. One who was less arrogant and undisciplined in his youth. One who was less like me."

"tapestry" (season 6, episode 15).

In "Tapestry", Q offers Picard a second chance at life. Rather than being stabbed as a reckless youth, Picard is given the chance to do things differently and avoid the incident. However, changing his past has far-reaching ramifications. Without a near-death experience, Picard becomes meek and never reaches the captain's chair.

Patrick Stewart Confirms Star Trek: The Next Generations's Weirdest Rumor

Q's intervention teaches Picard an important lesson: there are times when recklessness can pay off, and he must take life as it comes, rather than attempting to tidy it up. Picard may be ashamed of his past, but it is what drives him to succeed in the present.

1 "The trial never ends."

"all good things..." (season 7, episodes 25 and 26).

  • "You just don't get it, do you, Jean-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons. And for one brief moment, you did."

The Next Generation comes full circle in its finale, "All Good Things...", in which Q makes the closing arguments in the trial for humanity's survival. Picard must solve a fiendishly complicated temporal puzzle to convince Q of the human race's right to exist. While he eventually succeeds, Q reminds Picard that the tests faced by the human race are bound to continue. The process of exploration is never-ending.

Star Trek: Picard would later return to this sentiment , with Q reminding Picard of his earlier words. Q's classic speech also foreshadows that, while The Next Generation was coming to an end, the so-called Golden Age of Star Trek was only just beginning.

Quotes

Capt. Picard : I sincerely hope that this is the last time that I find myself here.

Q : You just don't get it, do you, Jean-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons. And for one brief moment, you did.

Capt. Picard : When I realized the paradox.

Q : Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. *That* is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknown possibilities of existence.

Q : You're not alone, you know. What you were, and what you are to become, will always be with you.

Q : The Continuum didn't think you had it in you, Jean-Luc. But I knew you did.

Capt. Picard : Are you saying that it worked? We collapsed the anomaly?

Q : Is that all this meant to you? Just another spatial anomaly, just another day at the office?

Capt. Picard : Did it work?

Q : Well, you're here, aren't you? You're talking to me, aren't you?

Capt. Picard : What about my crew?

Q : [scoffs]  The anomaly, my ship, my crew; I suppose you're worried about your fish, too. If it puts your mind at ease - you've saved humanity, once again.

Q : Goodbye, Jean-Luc. I'm gonna miss you. You had such potential. But then again, all good things must come to an end.

Q : You see this? This is you. I'm serious! Right here, life is about to form on this planet for the very first time. A group of amino acids are about to combine to form the first protein - the building blocks...

[chuckles]

Q : ...of what you call "life". Strange, isn't it? Everything you know, your entire civilization, it all begins right here in this little pond of goo. Appropriate somehow, isn't it? Too bad you didn't bring your microscope; it's really quite fascinating. Oh, look! There they go. The amino acids are moving closer and closer, and closer. Ooh! Nothing happened. See what you've done?

Q : The trial never ended, Captain. We never reached a verdict. But now we have. You're guilty.

Capt. Picard : Guilty of what?

Q : Of being inferior. Seven years ago, I said we'd be watching you, and we have been - hoping that your ape-like race would demonstrate *some* growth, give *some* indication that your minds had room for expansion. But what have we seen instead? You, worrying about Commander Riker's career. Listening to Counselor Troi's pedantic psychobabble. Indulging Data in his witless exploration of humanity.

Capt. Picard : We've journeyed to countless new worlds. We've contacted new species. We have expanded our understanding of the universe.

Q : In your own paltry, limited way. You have no *idea* how far you still have to go. But instead of using the last seven years to change and to grow, you have squandered them.

Capt. Picard : We are what we are, and we're doing the best we can. It is not for you to set the standards by which we should be judged!

Q : Oh, but it is, and we have. Time may be eternal, Captain, but our patience is not. It's time to put an end to your trek through the stars, make room for other more worthy species.

Capt. Picard : You're going to deny us travel through space?

Q : [laughs]  No! You obtuse piece of flotsam! You're to be denied *existence*. Humanity's fate has been sealed. You will be destroyed.

Capt. Picard : [learning that he successfully collapsed the anomaly]  Thank you.

Q : For what?

Capt. Picard : You had a hand in helping me get out of this.

Q : I was the one that got you into it. A directive from the Continuum. The part about the helping hand, though... was my idea.

[Q has given Picard the chance to ask ten yes/no questions]

Capt. Picard : ...Is it part of a Romulan plot, a ploy to start a war?

Q : No and no.

[crowd jeers]

Q : *Five* down!

Capt. Picard : That's only four!

Q : "Is it a Romulan plot?" "Is it a ploy to start a war?" Those are *separate* questions.

Capt. Picard : [sighs]  Did you create the anomaly?

Q : No, no, no!

[laughs]

Q : You're going to be so surprised when you realize where it came from...

Q : [suddenly menacing]  if you ever figure it out.

Capt. Picard : Are you responsible for my shifting through time?

Q : I'll answer that question if you promise you won't tell anyone.

Q : [leans in, whispers]  Yes!

Capt. Picard : Why?

Q : Sorry! That's not a yes or no question. You forfeit the rest of your questions.

Q : I believed in you. I thought you had potential. But apparently I was wrong. May whatever god you believe in...

[snorts]

Q : ...have mercy on your soul. This court stands adjourned.

Q : [to Picard, after the other ships explode]  Two down, one to go.

Picard : Q? What is going on here? Where is the anomaly?

Q : [pretending to be deaf]  Where is your mommy? Well, I don't know.

Capt. Picard : We demonstrated to you that mankind had become peaceful and benevolent. You agreed and you let us go on our way. Now why am I standing here again?

Q : Oh, you'd like me to connect the dots for you, lead you from A to B to C, so that your puny mind could comprehend? How boring.

[Q's last line of the series]

Q : In any case, I'll be watching. And if you're very lucky, I'll drop by to say hello from time to time. See you... out there!

Capt. Picard : The last time that I stood here was seven years ago.

Q : Seven years ago! How little do you mortals understand time. Must you be so linear, Jean-Luc?

Capt. Picard : You accused me of being the representative of a... a barbarous species.

Q : I believe my exact words were "a dangerous, savage child-race."

Picard : Now tell me one thing: this anomaly we're looking for - will that destroy humanity?

Q : You're forgetting, Jean-Luc - *you* destroy humanity.

Q : It's time to put an end to your trek through the stars.

Thank You, North Hollywood!

You were the best, the 13 best q moments from star trek.

This column brought to you by Blastoff Comics and our pals at The 13th Dimension . Go check ’em out, they do good work!

As Star Trek expert Robert Meyer Burnett has pointed out, Star Trek doesn’t really have villains, it has antagonists. These aren’t mere mustache-twirling “bad guys,” but antagonists who nonetheless have a perspective, a point of view and a fully rounded character that leads them into opposition with our valiant heroes of Starfleet time after time. And for my money, the best of them all is Q, the omnipotent extradimensional being who pops up like the bad penny time and again to bedevil Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation , challenging Picard’s notions of humanity’s worth, and sometimes just to gain some satisfaction out of puncturing Picard’s ego. It’s a character I have long loved watching, and currently am greatly enjoying writing, and you all can see the fruits of those labors this Wednesday when the first issue of STAR TREK: THE Q CONFLICT hits stores. While we wait to see what Q’s latest misadventure is, let’s take a look back through my 13 favorite Q moments from the Star Trek universe.

  • Here Comes the Judge

Q’s first appearance came in the very first episode of TNG, in “Encounter at Farpoint,” in which he put Captain Picard and the rest of humanity on trial for being a savage race. When Captain Picard’s security officer Tasha Yar objected, Judge Q (as played by John deLancie in a debut performance that guaranteed numerous return engagements) overruled her objection in a most chilling fashion…

  • Q and Guinan Have a History

When Q returned in the second season, he encountered the Enterprise’s new barkeep, Guinan, and from their threatening posture toward one another, it was clear that there was no love lost between them, and that there was much more to Guinan than met the eye…

  • Q Gets the Point

This hostility toward Q would resurface with Guinan again in the third-season episode “Deja Q,” in which Q has been stripped of his powers and flees to the Enterprise for sanctuary. Guinan has doubts that Q is really mortal and determines so in the simplest manner possible: by driving a fork into his hand.

  • Another Try at Humanity

This isn’t my first opportunity to write for Q. A few years back, my co-writer David Tipton and artist Elena Casagrande got to tackle ALIEN SPOTLIGHT: Q, a tale in which Q returns to once again get a taste of what it’s like to be human, this time by taking over the body of one Jean-Luc Picard.

Q would soon find out that even the smallest of interactions isn’t quite as easy as he’d imagined. I’m really fond of this little one-shot Q tale, which can be found in the trade paperback ALIEN SPOTLIGHT, VOLUME 2 or digitally at Comixology.

  • Q-de-Lally!

His powers returned, Q was back to his old tricks in the fourth-season episode “Qpid,” in which Q transports Picard and his crew back to the days of Sherwood Forest, taking on the roles of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Naturally, who else would Q play but the Sheriff of Nottingham?

  • Oh Heavenly Q

Q’s most surprising entrance, no doubt, came in the sixth-season episode “Tapestry,” in which a gravely injured Picard dies on Dr. Crusher’s operating table, leading to his meeting up with an angelic Q, who greets him thusly: “Welcome to the afterlife, Jean-Luc. You’re dead.”

Picard wasn’t the only Starfleet Captain Q would bedevil. On his sole appearance on Deep Space Nine , Q challenged Sisko to an old-timey boxing match, only to get sent to the floor by a right cross, which left Q crying “You hit me! Picard never hit me!”

  • I Only Have Eyes for Q

Things would get even weirder with the other Starfleet captain Q would encounter, Kathryn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager, in the third-season episode “The Q and the Grey.” Determined to sire a child to combine the best elements of humanity and the Q, Q makes an effort to seduce Janeway that is as hilarious as it is fruitless.

  • Q Victorious

In probably his most notable defeat over Picard, in the episode “Q-Who?” he hurls the Enterprise farther out in space than they’ve ever traveled, to prove his point that humanity isn’t ready for the terrors that await them. After an encounter with the Borg cripples Picard’s ship and claims the lives of eighteen of his crew, Picard is forced to admit their weakness and ask Q to return them to safety, which he does, but not before gloating just a little about the wonders that await them: “It’s not for the timid.”

  • Ay Qaramba!

For sheer yucks, nothing is better than the hilarious moment when Q regains his powers in “Deja Q” and decides to throw a party on the Bridge, complete with a mariachi band.

  • A Final Test

In the final episode of TNG, “All Good Things,” Captain Picard is forced to solve a mystery across three distinctly different periods in his life, hurtling back and forth between them thanks to, as always, interference from Q. At adventure’s end, when Picard succeeds and finds himself back in the courtroom from their first encounter, he thanks Q, realizing that Q had been subtly helping Picard all along, and for the first time, we see genuine affection in Q’s face, as he admits, “well, I was the one who got you into it.” A very sweet little moment that pays off years of antagonism in their relationship.

If I may be so self-indulgent, let’s look at a heretofore unrevealed moment from my upcoming series THE Q CONFLICT, in which Picard has called Q to the carpet for the damages his war among the godlike beings of the cosmos is doing to the all-too-mortal inhabitants of Picard’s reality.  And as so often happens, arguing with Q leads you to places you most definitely don’t want to go…

And finally, my favorite Q moment of all comes once again from the third-season episode “Deja Q,” in which Q, his powers returned, seeks to thank his “Professor of the Humanities” Data for his help while Q was trapped in human form, and does so in a way distinctly Q-like and surprisingly touching.

Warp Speed Your Inspiration: 55 Iconic Star Trek Quotes for Fans

best star trek q quotes

Last Updated on February 25, 2024

The Star Trek universe is full of wisdom and brilliant one-liners that are impressive for learning and food for thought. There are bound to be hundreds of amazing quotes to choose from with so many seasons, both new and old, to watch! Everyone has their favorites, so there is a classic quote here for you somewhere, whether it be Spock, Jean Luc Picard, Leonard McCoy, Scotty, or James T Kirk.

You could almost say it would be “highly illogical” not to read on! (If you know, you know). Before we give you 55 Quotes that will be sure to keep you wanting more Star Trek, let’s quickly discuss what Star Trek is (for those that have been living under a rock for 40 years!)

Since then, a host of different spin-offs, mini-series, animated movies, cartoons, toys, games, and books/comics have been released. A cult following has developed around the movie, and many fans dress up as characters for conventions and even go as far as to do a V-shaped hand sign, whilst saying the classic catchphrase “live long and prosper”. Ironically, the Star Trek series continues to prosper, even 50+ years after its debut, long may it continue!

10 Star Trek Quotes That Perfectly Sum Up The Franchise

Built on going where no one has gone before, Star Trek is filled with inspirational quotes that perfectly capture what Gene Roddenberry believed.

Star Trek is one of the most enduring science fiction franchises of all time. Built on the adventures of Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series , the franchise has branched out into multiple feature films and spinoff series.

RELATED: Star Trek: The 10 Weirdest Quotes From The Franchise

Fans of Star Trek love to watch their favorite movies and episodes over and over again. But one thing they probably like to do even more is to quote their most beloved entries in the saga. Trek has long been a franchise about the exploration of space as well as the human condition, and many of the franchise's most iconic quotes perfectly encapsulate the spirit of creator Gene Roddenberry's vision.

10 "I Dare You To Do Better."

Captain christopher pike - star trek (2009).

When director J.J. Abrams helmed the rebooted version of Star Trek for his 2009 film of the same name, fans were skeptical whether new versions of Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew could hold up against the original. In a pivotal scene, Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) let fans know that the movie understood the pressure it was under.

Attempting to recruit a listless James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) into Starfleet, Pike brings up Kirk's own father ( Chris Hemsworth in his pre- Thor days ), who died heroically in the film's opening scene. It was a dare not only to Kirk but to the Trek franchise in general to hold up to its storied ideals and standards.

9 "We Work To Better Ourselves And The Rest Of Humanity."

Captain jean-luc picard - star trek: first contact (1996).

Star Trek: First Contact is widely regarded by fans as the best standalone movie starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation . It's no secret that Patrick Stewart is one of the most quotable figures in Trek history, having dropped many iconic speeches in his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

But when he describes his home time of the 24th century to the cynical 21st-century Lily (Alfre Woodard), Captain Picard perfectly encapsulates the ideals perpetuated by the series. Star Trek takes place in a world where the people of Earth have given up chasing personal gain for the sake of profit and instead seek the enrichment of one's self and humanity at large.

8 "Spock, You Want To Know Something? Everybody's Human."

Captain james t. kirk - star trek vi: the undiscovered country (1991).

The original crew of the Enterprise was last seen together in 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , directed by Nicholas Meyer. Kirk ( William Shatner ) and the cast celebrated 25 years of exploring the galaxy in the crew's swan song, and after multiple scenes of thrills and action, Kirk and Mr. Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ) shared a quiet moment in Spock's cabin.

With his Vulcan first officer contemplating age and outliving one's usefulness, Kirk points out that aging and vulnerability are part of being human. Spock , of course, protests that he is not human. He finds Kirk's declaration that "everybody's human" insulting. But it is a reminder that Star Trek is, above all, about the things that unite people under a common umbrella.

7 "We Are Searching, Not Just For Answers To Our Questions. But For New Questions."

Commander benjamin sisko - star trek: deep space nine, "emissary" (1993).

The premiere episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , "Emissary," set the series apart from its predecessors in multiple ways. One aspect of the franchise that didn't change was the commitment to exploring the galaxy. Faced with the non-corporeal Prophets, Comander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) struggles to explain the concept of linear questions.

In doing so, Sisko describes Starfleet's mission statement to a tee. Sisko perfectly describes the nature of Starfleet's goal of exploring the galaxy - exploration for the sake of discovery and knowledge.

6 "Let's Make Sure History Never Forgets The Name Enterprise."

Captain jean-luc picard - star trek: the next generation, "yesterday's enterprise" (1990).

"Yesterday's Enterprise" is one of the hallmark episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation . A shift in the timeline results in Captain Picard and the Enterprise-D getting caught up in the middle of a decades-long war with the Klingon Empire. As Picard braces his crew for a last stand against the Klingons, he rallies them around the name of his iconic ship.

The legacy of the Enterprise is as important to fans as any other character. Indeed, to many Trekkies, the Enterprise is herself a character. It's a stirring call to action and an emphatic reminder that each piece of the Trek universe is an integral part of its legacy.

5 "Life Must Be Worn Gloriously."

Captain christopher pike - star trek: strange new worlds, "strange new worlds" (2022).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gets almost everything about Star Trek right . The show's return to single-episode morality tales after the more serialized Discovery and Picard has enabled Trek to study the human condition again, and this emphasis is displayed wonderfully in the journey of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount).

Knowing that a disastrous accident lies in his future and recognizing that his life will change irrevocably, Pike stands between two warring factions on a primitive planet. The Captain reminds a world on the verge of self-annihilation that life is a gift.

4 "Risk Is Our Business!"

Captain james t. kirk - star trek: the original series, "return to tomorrow" (1968).

Star Trek: The Original Series showcased the danger inherent in space exploration. It reflected the times, as humanity was making its push to reach the moon, and more than a few dangers of space travel had been horrifically realized. However, in the episode "Return to Tomorrow," Captain Kirk reminds his crew that risk is required for growth.

RELATED: 10 Star Trek Episodes That Predicted The Future

By reminding his crew that risk is part of the reason he and his crew are aboard the Enterprise, Kirk makes it known that he expects his crew to push itself to the limits. It's a statement about how critical growth and knowledge are to the Star Trek ethos.

3 "A Starship Also Runs On Loyalty."

Commander spock - star trek: the original series, "the ultimate computer" (1968).

The camaraderie of the crew is one of the aspects of Star Trek that fans of the series most treasure. Throughout the franchise, many episodes centered around Kirk putting himself at personal risk for the betterment and safety of his crew mates. The crew of the Enterprise was fiercely loyal to one another.

When Starfleet uses the Enterprise as a test bed for a computer that can control all starship operations, Mr. Spock is at first fascinated by the prospect. But when Kirk realizes the computer will make him obsolete, Spock reminds his captain that a ship also needs the loyalty and dedication of the human element.

2 "Of All The Souls I've Encountered In My Travels, His Was The Most Human"

Admiral james t. kirk - star trek ii: the wrath of khan (1982).

The death of Spock is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the history of the Star Trek franchise. When eulogizing his friend at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan , Kirk reflects on the humanity of his famously-alien first officer and best friend.

RELATED: 13 Greatest Star Trek Villains Of All Time, Ranked

Fans of the franchise were uniquely drawn to the dichotomy of Spock's human and Vulcan halves. With Spock having given his life for the crew of the Enterprise, Kirk's emotional declaration that Spock's human side ultimately won out is a statement of hope, which is ultimately what the Trek franchise is all about.

1 "Logic Clearly Dictates That The Needs Of The Many Outweigh The Needs Of The Few."

Captain spock - star trek ii: the wrath of khan (1982).

Spock famously notes in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." In isolation, it's foreshadowing Spock's sacrifice at the end of the film. However, in a broader view, it is perhaps the unifying tenet of the entire franchise.

Starfleet's mission statement is to explore strange new worlds and seek out new civilizations. But it is also an organization built on loyalty and sacrifice. This statement of simple logic from Star Trek 's most famous character is referenced by fans and critics alike whenever the franchise displays one of its famous moral dilemmas. It is definitely the most enduring quote in Star Trek history.

22 Famous Star Trek Quotes that Will Live Forever

If you haven’t watched Star Trek , you’ve at least heard about it. The sci-fi television series created by Gene Roddenberry has earned millions of fans over the years.

Roddenberry was allegedly inspired by Gulliver's Travels and a TV series called Wagon Train to create Star Trek.  Each episode of the series is built as an incredible adventure, but also as a morality tale, considering that the episodes depict cultural realities and conflicts like war and peace, sexism, human rights, religion, economics, loyalty, racism and technology.

Military Dad of 4 Daughters Defends His Girls When Strangers Make This Rude Remark

Austin von Letkemann is the military officer strangers feel "sorry" for — and the reason is infuriating.

Whenever the devoted father leaves the house with his four children, strangers can't help but notice the officer in uniform is holding hands with 4 adorable little girls. They will tell the traditionally "masculine" and "all American" dad they feel sorry for him, because he has no sons. This dad makes one thing very clear: They are his daughters, they aren't a burden.

In a passionate video, von Letkemann took to Instagram to share with his followers that the only thing that's "difficult" about being a girl dad — is clapping back to these sexist remarks over and over again.

They Mock His Daughters To Their Face

"All my kids can speak and understand English. They know what you’re saying. It hurts their feelings." - Austin von Letkemann, Instagram

Saying "Get Your Shotgun" Isn't Funny — It's Sexist

Another common comment that Austin von Letkemann encounters is the old "better get your shotgun ready" trope, often delivered with a smirk or a wink. This line is typically intended to suggest that a father with daughters should be on high alert to protect them from potential "suitors," implying that they are objects to be guarded rather than individuals with agency.

"No one says this to my wife. They only say this to me." - Austin von Letkemann, Instagram

Von Letkemann finds this line of thinking outdated and sexist. In his viral Instagram video, he points out that these jokes are not just stale — they're damaging.

By suggesting that his daughters require armed protection, the joke reinforces the idea that women are inherently vulnerable and need to be shielded from men. Von Letkemann argues that instead of promoting this narrative, society should focus on teaching respect and consent, challenging these sexist tropes at their source.

In fact, he told his Instagram followers that if he were to have a fifth child, he would hope for another girl. This declaration isn't just about doubling down on his pride in his family — it's a pointed response to those who see fathering daughters as a misfortune.

Von Letkemann's stance is a powerful one, rejecting the notion that a family is incomplete without sons. He encourages others to question the assumptions behind these comments and to appreciate the joy and fulfillment that his daughters bring. By sharing his story, von Letkemann hopes to create a more inclusive perspective on fatherhood, one that values daughters just as much as sons.

blonde haired woman and a Facebook page

Marlena Karbowski, is the Liverpool banker who found herself sucked into a modern-day love story — with a dark twist.

Elderly Woman Was Going to Sell Her Home for Her Mystery “Boyfriend”

It all began when a sweet elderly woman entered the Westpac branch Karbowski worked at. But despite appearances, Karbowski couldn't help but notice there was something suspicious about this woman.

When the client (who remained anonymous) approached Karbowski's desk, she revealed her shocking intentions for showing up that day and it instantly raised a red flag for Karbowski. This elderly client had suddenly decided she wanted to sell her home and cancel her Westpac home insurance.

Even though Karbowski didn't know what exactly was going on, one thing was absolutely clear. The elderly woman – who had been a loyal Westpac client for years and did not have a diverse history of investing — was acting out of character. The only question was what — or who — was making her act so irrationally?

When Karbowski probed further, she received a vague answer from her client about "helping her son." But this surface-level explanation didn't satisfy Karbowski. Her instincts kicked in so she delved deeper. Finally, during a private conversation with her client, the dark truth hidden beneath the surface was revealed.

Her Gut Instinct Knew There Was More to This Story

"I asked her to send me photos of the guy and I put them into a Google reverse image search. There were so many different pictures of this guy, one was of a model somewhere in America, so then we knew it was a scam,” recounted Karbowski.

After a brief investigation, Karbowski discovered the elderly woman's true mission. She was seeking funds to secure her "boyfriend's" release from imprisonment overseas. The only way she knew how to get the money was to sell her home. Karbowski calmly asked to see photos of her alleged online beau. It didn't take the tech-savvy Karbowski much time to discover a disturbing pattern.

Her “Guardian Angel” Rescued Her in the Nick of Time

A reverse Google search heartbreakingly revealed that this mysterious "boyfriend" was not who he said he was. Many of the photos the woman had received from her purported beau were found online, stolen from other people's accounts with different names. When Karbowski realized her client had already negotiated the sale of her home, she felt sick to her stomach.

Due to the immediate nature of the matter, Karbowski made it her number one priority to save this elderly woman from homelessness. Fortunately, the settlement of the property was still one week away so her elderly client still had time to cancel the sale of her house. But she wasn't finished with her just yet.

Hand-in-hand Karbowski walked her client over to the Liverpool Police Station. She encouraged her to report the crime, ensuring that the necessary steps were taken to protect her client from further harm.

As Marlena Karbowski spoke to the elderly woman, a single question made the whole puzzle come into focus. With a gentle, unassuming voice, Karbowski asked, “When was the last time he took you out for coffee?” The silence that followed was more revealing than any words could be. The elderly woman’s eyes flickered with the painful realization that she had never actually met her "boyfriend" in person. In that moment, it all became clear to both of them.

"We cried together. We care and when we see those red flags, we act.” - Marlena Karbowski

Karbowski knew this was the turning point. It wasn’t just about money or property; it was about unraveling the emotional manipulation and lies that had ensnared her client. Star Trek: Data's 10 Best Quotes, Ranked

Since his introduction in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data has always been a fan favorite, perhaps because he was more human than most humans.

Since the very first Star Trek episode debuted, they've worked hard to introduce plenty of intriguing new characters, species and worlds, but none has been more outstanding than Lieutenant Commander Data of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation . Portrayed by Brent Spiner, Data was a synthetic android with artificial intelligence created by Dr. Noonien Soong (also portrayed by Spiner) in his own image. Though he may have been artificial, Data was perhaps one of the most real characters in the series.

While some have claimed Data to be a successor to Spock, offering a unique outsider's perspective and approach within a very human Starfleet, there's no denying that he quickly rose to stand in a league all his own. In his quest to understand human emotion, Data spent a significant amount of time exploring the very nature of humanity itself. From sadness and merriment to anger and love, Data practiced jokes to make others laugh, tried his hand at parenting, and even became a loving pet owner to Spot the cat. He endeavored into a romance or two, just to see what it might be like, and while it's hard to say he loved mystery and Sherlock Holmes, there's really no other way to describe his fascination.

Across the series and into the movies, Data became a shining example to everyone around him. In the first season of Picard , a retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was seen often lamenting Data's absence from his life. Over the years, he'd come to think of him as his closest friend and confidant, and with good reason. Data's intelligence was matched only by his wisdom, and in the end, his humanity.

Artificial Intelligence is still often a terrifying concept to humanity, but Data was the exception. As a character, he left fans with plenty of profound statements and ponderings to mull over, and sometimes they are more human than human. His thoughtful commentary on humanity and life lingers on, leaving many to wonder how much easier life could be if everyone it approached it from the same standpoint as Data.

10 "I would gladly risk feeling bad at times..."

Data's influence often extended to the children around him, like Timothy, whom he rescued in Season 5, Episode 11, "Hero Worship." Timothy's fascination with Data prompted the boy to proclaim to be an android himself, an effort to forget the horrors he'd seen and the way it made him feel. But Data pointed out that being an android had equal perks and flaws, saying, "I would gladly risk feeling bad at times, if it also meant that I could taste my dessert."

Data's reminder of how often humanity takes life's pleasures for granted was not unique. In his longing to experience life as a human, he could more easily see all the little things humans inadvertently ignore. Like how lucky they are to taste, touch, smell, see, hear, and then process the way it feels to truly experience something.

9 "In the event of a water landing..."

Data spent a lot of time testing out jokes and trying to make people laugh. In the Star Trek: Insurrection film, he reminded everyone, "In the event of a water landing, I have been designed to serve as a flotation device." While hilarious, the funniest part about his little joke was that there was probably some truth to it. Dr. Soong had a bizarre sense of humor, and turning his most profound, intelligent creation into a flotation device to aptly serve the people around him wouldn't have been all that far-fetched.

8 "Yes, Sir. I am attempting to fill a silent moment with non-relevant conversation."

Continuing his quest to learn and understand humanity, Data once created a subroutine that would allow him to engage in small talk in Season 6, Episode 18, "Starship Mine." After attempting to make small talk with Captain Picard, and then explaining his end goal, the captain directed him to a notorious small talk expert, Commander Calvin Hutchinson. As Data quickly came to understand after approaching Hutchinson, small talk has the capacity to become never-ending. But is it because life is filled with awkward moments, or does small talk only further enhance awkwardness?

7 "Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most amusing."

When Deanna Troi was preparing to get married in Season 1, Episode 11, "Haven," nothing seemed to go her way--especially after her mother Lwaxana gets into an argument with her intended's fiancé about betazoids being superior to humans. Before Troi storms out in a rage, she begs them to stop their petty bickering, but once she's gone, Data asks them to keep it up. After all, not only is it a great study in human nature, but it's actually pretty funny.

6 "The real secret is turning disadvantage into advantage."

When hearing-impaired negotiator Riva boarded the Enterprise, there was a lot of frustration between Riva and the crew. Picard ordered Data to learn sign language, so he could more easily act as an interpreter, but Riva's frustration made him want to abandon his mission and go home a failure. Troi tried to inspire him, using the above quote, which Data later translated back to the crew when Riva found his strength. People often forget that every aspect of life, regardless of one's circumstances, often provides them with a unique advantage others around them don't have. This reminder for everyone to turn what they consider to be a disadvantage into an advantageous strength is always relevant.

5 "I am superior, sir, in many ways, but I would gladly give it up to be human."

From his very first introduction in the pilot episode, Data made it very clear what he wanted. Physically and mentally superior to those around him, he felt a deep longing for that which he didn't have: humanity. He would spend the years that followed serving on the Enterprise and trying desperately to achieve the perfect human experience. Even when Q offered Data the chance to become human , the latter turned him down. Data recognized that he didn't physically need to be like everyone else to be human, or to have a very human experience. In many ways, he was more human than most of the people around him.

4 "Prejudice is very human."

The people around him often made their discomfort a little too obvious. Even Riker (Jonathan Frakes) , upon first meeting Data, had his doubts about working with an artificial intelligence. Data broke the ice with a very astute observation about prejudice being a human reaction, though to say this created a good foundation for their relationship is laughable. In time, Riker would definitely adjust, and much like everyone else in the crew, come to think of Data as a friend, but in the beginning he displayed one of humanity's worst traits in his prejudice against Data.

3 "Differences sometimes scare people."

Exploring the nature of humanity eventually led Data to creating life and becoming a parent. While he couldn't reproduce naturally, he did possess the ability to create an android using the knowledge of his own creator, Dr. Soong, so he did. His daughter Lal only seemed to further enhance Data's humanity, as he passed on as much as he could about his personal observations of life, just like a human father would.

His poignant observation, "Differences sometimes scare people. I have learned that some of them use humor to hide their fear," is a reminder that fear is often considered a weakness. Deflecting and hiding behind a wall of humor can provide a temporary reprieve from the fear, but eventually, the wall will come down.

2 "This is just a thing... and things can be replaced. Lives cannot."

When faced with a community of humans who refuse to leave their land, even though they face inevitable death, Data tries desperately to steer them away. Fearing they will lose everything they have, the colony refuses to budge. It's difficult for people to sometimes look beyond the moment, toward the bigger picture. Letting go of the material for the sake of preserving one's own life isn't easy, but even Data knows that things can be replaced; people, not so much.

1 "Mortality gives meaning to human life."

Data never had to die. He could have gone on living eternally, but that wasn't what he wanted. In the first season of Picard , he was finally given a choice to end his life. When he expressed this to his friend and former captain, Picard struggled to understand. Data admitted that he didn't want to die, but he wanted to live briefly with the understanding that one day his life would end. This would help him appreciate every moment he was given, prompt him to take advantage of the time he had. Knowing that one is going to die brings life meaning in the most brilliant way, allowing a person to die feeling like they'd done everything in their power to live while given the chance.

7 best Star Trek villains, ranked

Joe Allen

Thanks to its more than 50 years of continued existence, Star Trek   has produced just a lot of stuff. That stuff includes several great TV shows, more than a few outstanding movies, and perhaps most importantly of all, some genuinely great villains.

4. The Klingons

3. the borg queen, 2. gul dhukat.

Because Trek has always concerned itself with the politics of the stories it tells, the series has also introduced some genuinely nuanced bad guys. There are plenty of great villains of the week, to be sure, but there are also legendary villains who have made their way onto this list. These are the seven best Star Trek villains, ranked.

Say what you will about  Star Trek Into Darkness , but J.J. Abrams’ first Star Trek effort was a rousing success. Among its many feats was its introduction of a totally new villain in the form of Nero, a vengeful Romulan who blames Spock for not preventing the death of his family.

  • 10 best Netflix shows with more than 5 seasons, ranked

  • 10 best 2010s sci-fi movies, ranked

Eric Bana’s performance in the role is transformative, but what really sells the whole endeavor is the sense of grandeur and scale that’s on display. Nero is filled with rage, and it’s that rage that has driven him to where he is now.

We’ve had plenty of great villains from across the many Trek shows, but Deep Space Nine ’s Weyoun was among the most beloved, in part because he was an ideal foil to the show’s cast. As the mouthpiece for the Dominion and a Vorta himself, Weyoun always delivered his message with a smile, but that rarely meant that he actually had the best of intentions.

In fact, Weyoun was in many ways your typical slimey politician, and that was undoubtedly a huge part of what made him so appealing to fans of  Deep Space Nine every time he was killed off and then inevitably returned to the show.

An omnipotent being that is a reminder of how far  Star Trek  characters can come, Q was first introduced as an ominous presence but became something much sillier as he became more familiar to Star Trek fans.

It was Q’s actions that ultimately resulted in the introduction of the Borgs to the universe, and he was also the one who charged Picard with the crimes of humanity. In spite of his power, Q is ultimately not the worst perpetrator of evil in the world of Star Trek, even though he certainly could have been.

In many ways the primordial Star Trek villain, the Klingons have shown up in a number of different villainous guises over the course of the franchise’s long and storied history. In the show’s original configuration, they existed as a foil to the Federation — the USSR to the Federation’s America.

Of course, Trek never expressed any idea quite that simply, and the Klingons were always humanized, even as they often opposed what the Federation was doing. You understood that they had their reasons, even if you weren’t always supposed to be sympathetic to them.

The Borg, in general, is a major menace to the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Operating as a hive mind with the goal of assimilating all other living things into them, part of the point of the Borg was that they were everywhere and nowhere.

That’s why many were so worried by the introduction of the Borg Queen, but they didn’t have any reason for concern. The Borg Queen totally works, in large part thanks to Alice Krige’s memorable, sensual performance in the central role.

Gul Dukat was the best version of the authoritarian mode of Star Trekvillain. A character so villainous and tyrannical that you wanted nothing more than his ultimate defeat, even if you also found him compelling.

A Cardassian war criminal who ruled over Bajor as a complete totalitarian, what made Dukat so remarkable was that you could understand that his actions were heinous, even as you found yourself drawn into his world. Many argue that Gul Dhukat is the finest villain Star Trek has ever produced, and we think that’s pretty close to being on the money.

A name memorably screamed not once but twice in Star Trek movies , Khan is most remembered today for killing Spock in  The Wrath of Khan , widely regarded as the best of the  Trek  movies for a reason.

Although Khan was just a villain-of-the-week in the original series, in Wrath of Khan , he is elevated to a devious mastermind, capable of taking down and outsmarting even Kirk, Spock, and their crew. Ricardo Montalbán’s performance made the role one of the most important in the history of the franchise. As for Benedict Cumberbatch’s reprisal of the character? Well, the less said about that, the better.

For most movies, the only cut that we get the chance to see is the one that's released in theaters. Sometimes, a Blu-ray release will include some deleted scenes, but it's rare for those scenes to be reintegrated into the film. On some rare occasions, though, we get a chance to see what a director would have done with a movie if they had been granted final cut. Usually, these director's cuts come from some of the best directors ever to work in Hollywood, and they're sometimes even directorial debuts.

Sometimes, these director's cuts aren't that different from the theatrical versions, or it turns out that those cuts are actually worse than the ones we saw in theaters. Other times, though, we get cuts that are genuine improvements on the original film. We've compiled seven of the best director's cuts that ever saw the light of day for this list and ranked them below. 7. I Am Legend (2007) I Am Legend (2007) Official Trailer #1 - Sci-Fi Thriller

The 15 most memorable star wars quotes from return of the jedi.

The Star Wars movies are well known for highly-quotable dialogue, and Return of the Jedi features many of the saga's most memorable lines.

  • Return of the Jedi is filled with memorable quotes, among the most iconic in the Star Wars franchise.
  • Lucas' dialogue perfectly fits each character and drives the story to a satisfying conclusion.
  • Many Return of the Jedi quotes are still referenced in parodies, memes, and other Star Wars movies and TV shows.

Over 40 years after its theatrical release, Return of the Jedi remains a sci-fi classic and a satisfying conclusion to the original Star Wars trilogy packed with memorable quotes. Every loose thread from the first two movies is wrapped up and Luke Skywalker's hero's journey comes full circle, topped off with a compelling redemption for Darth Vader that concludes Anakin Skywalker's six-movie arc. Most importantly, it brings the entire Star Wars original trilogy cast together for one last epic adventure and is full of wonderful character moments that form the story's emotional core.

With such a well-rounded narrative and outstanding performances, it's no wonder that Return of the Jedi has some of the most memorable quotes in the Star Wars saga . Good dialogue reveals more about how the characters have developed, grabs the viewer's attention, smoothly transitions to another tone, and for Star Wars , feels poetic. 15 Return of the Jedi lines stand out after several decades and will continue to be quoted by Star Wars fans for many generations.

Star Wars Movies In Order: How To Watch Release Order, Chronologically & With The TV Shows

15 "nevertheless, i'm taking captain solo and his friends. you can either profit by this or be destroyed.", luke skywalker.

Return of the Jedi made Luke Skywalker's fall to the dark side a real possibility by reintroducing him with a line that is just as menacing as it is memorable. Luke is dressed in all black, directly threatens Jabba the Hutt's life in front of everyone, and says so with calm determination, an uncomfortable reflection of Darth Vader. Mark Hamill deserves praise for his cool delivery and confident body language, demonstrating how the actor had grown alongside his character.

14 "Then My Father Is Truly Dead."

Conversely, Hamill conveys Luke's humanity while delivering one of Return of the Jedi 's most tragic quotes. The finality of this line and Luke's stoic delivery imply that there is no hope for Vader and that Luke has surrendered himself for nothing. Hamill infuses just the right amount of disappointment to convey the emotion behind Luke's words, perfectly transitioning into the throne room scenes with Emperor Palpatine.

13 "I Love You." / "I Know."

Han solo and princess leia organa.

Although Han Solo and Leia Organa made this exchange iconic in The Empire Strikes Back , its reprise in Return of the Jedi is just as memorable. It's heartwarming to hear Han tell Leia that he loves her, and her repeating his response from the last movie maintains the playfulness of their relationship even amid battle. George Lucas felt that the Star Wars movies should rhyme with each other like poetry , and this callback makes Han and Leia's exchange even more memorable.

12 "I Don't Know. Fly Casual."

Return of the Jedi has many menacing, tragic, and heartwarming quotes, but it also gives characters several hilarious lines, usually Han Solo. His scene where he tells Chewbacca to keep his distance but not raise suspicion is one of the funniest moments in the original trilogy, and telling his copilot to "Fly casual" is a nonsensical yet perfectly Han Solo response. It's a memorable and humorous reprieve in a scene full of tension as the rebels embark on their most dangerous mission yet.

11 "It's An Older Code, Sir, But It Checks Out."

Admiral piett.

Admiral Piett's answer to Darth Vader's inquiry is a unique Star Wars quote, memorable for being daunting and hilarious. It's a daunting quote because Piett knowing that it's an older code makes the rebels' shuttle look suspicious, threatening to expose them and lead to an intense space battle. However, it's become unintentionally hilarious for being used in countless Star Wars memes in recent years, the hallmark of a memorable quote.

10 "So What I Told You Was True... From A Certain Point Of View."

Obi-wan "ben" kenobi.

Viewers were dying to hear Obi-Wan Kenobi's explanation for having lied to Luke about Darth Vader killing his father, and the Jedi Master couldn't have given a more memorable answer. Rather than directly admitting that he lied to protect Luke as Yoda did, Obi-Wan reframes what he said in the first movie by explaining how Anakin Skywalker died "From a certain point of view." With such an unexpected justification and a bit of rhyming, this has become one of the most memorable and parodied Star Wars quotes.

9 "When 900 Years Old You Reach, Look As Good You Will Not, Hmm?"

Yoda spent most of The Empire Strikes Back being serious during Luke's training, but Return of the Jedi reminded viewers that he still had a sense of humor. Not only is his remark hilarious, but it also reveals exactly how old Yoda is, and it's heartwarming to see him attempt to make Luke feel better after criticizing him throughout the previous film. This is certainly a line that older Star Wars fans will happily quote for their children or grandchildren.

8 "3PO, You Tell That Slimy Piece Of Worm-Ridden Filth, He'll Get No Such Pleasure From Us! Right?"

Han Solo has several great lines in Return of the Jedi , but his best is undoubtedly when he finally tells Jabba the Hutt exactly what he thinks of him. While the second half of the line admittedly doesn't sound like how Han normally talks in the other movies, Harrison Ford makes it sound fluent and natural, delivering one of the best burns in the Star Wars franchise. His slight pause before the word "filth" also suggests that Han's word choice would be somewhat stronger if Return of the Jedi didn't appeal to kids.

7 "Oh... I'm Afraid The Deflector Shield Will Be Quite Operational When Your Friends Arrive."

Emperor palpatine.

Emperor Palpatine's line to Luke in the Death Star throne room is a quote whose memorability is due solely to Ian McDiarmid's brilliant delivery. The cadence in his voice and mock sympathy make Palpatine's dialogue a joy to listen to despite the severity of the situation. Palpatine's sinister smile at the end shows how much he enjoys making Luke suffer and treating the rebels as pieces on a chess board.

6 "The Force Is Strong In My Family. My Father Has It. I Have It. And... my sister has it."

Luke's line about the Force being strong in his family is well-written, but also elevated by Mark Hamill's underrated delivery. It was a perfect way for Luke to gradually tell Leia that she was his sister, allowing her to comprehend the full weight of what that would mean for her future. This quote was so memorable that it would eventually be used for the second teaser trailer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.

5 "I Hope So, Commander, For Your Sake. The Emperor Is Not As Forgiving As I Am."

Darth vader.

Despite what he tells Moff Jerjerrod in this scene, Darth Vader consistently proves that he is the most threatening villain in Star Wars . The previous film showed Vader killing his men left and right for the slightest failure, so implying that his wrath is nothing compared to the Emperor was a brilliant way to motivate the Moff and to build tension for the Emperor's arrival. Count Dooku would later threaten Asajj Ventress with a nearly identical quote in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars theatrical release.

4 "If You Will Not Be Turned, You Will Be Destroyed."

Palpatine revealed how unforgiving he was at the end of Return of the Jedi by delivering a line more menacing than Vader's. The movie had not yet shown how powerful Palpatine was with the Force, so McDiarmid's terrifying use of "destroyed" followed by Force lightning made his attack unexpected in the best way possible. This scene solidified that McDiarmid could make any Palpatine line menacing , something he would continue to prove in every subsequent appearance.

3 "Luke... There Is... Another... Sk... Sky...walker."

The Star Wars saga has many memorable death scenes, and Yoda revealing that there is another member of the Skywalker family makes his final moment more impactful. Yoda's straining to get the words out before he dies compels the viewer to listen closely and anticipate whatever he is about to reveal, making it even more tragic when he dies before telling Luke who this other Skywalker is. This quote would appear again in the season 6 finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars when Yoda is granted a vision of his future.

2 "Never. I'll Never Turn To The Dark Side. You've Failed, Your Highness. I Am A Jedi, Like My Father Before Me."

Luke Skywalker defying Palpatine is not only one of the best quotes in Return of the Jedi , it is arguably the greatest moment in all of Star Wars . The original trilogy had been building to this moment, where Luke would defeat the dark side or join it, and his monologue perfectly concludes his arc. Despite knowing he can't beat Palpatine, Luke refuses to be like him and continue his legacy, even if it means death. He proudly proclaims himself a Jedi and maintains his faith in others, showing that no matter how much power Palpatine has, he still cannot control who Luke is.

1 "It's A Trap!"

Admiral ackbar.

However, there's no denying that the most memorable line in Return of the Jedi is Admiral Ackbar's iconic "It's a trap!" This quote was the perfect way to cap off the gradual reveal that Palpatine had arranged an ambush for the rebels, with the rebels trying to run but the Imperials cutting them off as John WIlliams' score builds tension. Fantastic delivery, full energy, and perfect for memes, this is easily the most memorable Return of the Jedi quote and one of the best lines in Star Wars history.

  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Ending, Explained

Quick links, how does star trek: the next generation season 1 end, star trek: the next generation season 1's biggest story arcs, what do fans think of star trek: the next generation season 1's ending.

The stumbles of the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation have been well-documented. Behind-the-scenes, writers struggled with the concept set down by franchise creator Gene Roddenberry. Some episodes were blatant remakes of Original Series stories, and the show even managed to lose a key cast member. Sometimes it seemed a quadrant away from the classic-packed first season of Star Trek in 1966.

It would be a couple of years before TNG introduced the trademark two-part stories that split seasons — ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ set a high bar at the end of Season 3. But it was clear TNG wouldn’t settle for being defined by its first season. It mustered up a season finale that reasserted its vision for Star Trek while keeping an eye on the future.

Best Picard Quotes In Star Trek: The Next Generation

‘The Neutral Zone’ ends the first year of TNG in an unusual way. It doesn’t pick up specific plot strands from the 25 episodes that went before, instead serving up two balanced storylines that dovetail into an intriguing ending. In the pre-title teaser, Worf and Data encounter a 20th-century Earth spacecraft packed with cryogenically suspended humans and retrieve three of them. The discovery recalls ‘Space Seed,’ the ominous 1967 episode of the Original Series that introduced major villain Khan Noonien Singh, but the threat in TNG comes from somewhere else entirely.

Mostly, the three revived humans provide comic relief and pose an inconvenience as the crew of the Enterprise investigates the loss of several Federation outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone . The fear that the Romulan Star Empire is re-awakening after 53 years of isolation is realized at the end of the episode when the Enterprise encounters a huge Warbird and two combative commanders.

9 Underrated Star Trek: The Next Generation Episodes

The twist is that the Romulans aren’t behind the devastating attacks, having lost bases themselves. While there’s a chance for the Empire and Federation to work together, the Enterprise crew and fans are left in no doubt that the Romulans mean business in the galaxy, as one commander promises, “We are back.” As Picard eloquently observes, “I think our lives just became a lot more complicated.”

The episode’s odd structure makes an interesting juxtaposition. The antics of the survivors from the 20th century recall some comedic moments in the Original Series . While the Enterprise crew are oddly dismissive of the time refugees, their presence reinforces that the exploration and knowledge-led 24th century is far removed from the 20th, and even the 23rd. It’s a timely reminder as the parallel plot reintroduces and repositions the new-look Romulan Star Empire as a major threat.

The first season of TNG didn’t have the kinds of story arcs Star Trek fans are used to today. In the 1980s, TNG was syndicated to local stations in the US, meaning episodes could be broadcast in any order. That made arcs impossible and led to soft resets at the end of each story — which is why the death of a major character just two episodes before doesn’t warrant a reference. However, that didn’t stop TNG from seeding plots that would grow over the following years.

TNG ’s first year introduced Data’s long-lost brother Lore and the mysterious Traveler, both of whom would return with consequences. TNG ’s first story, ‘Encounter at Farpoint,’ welcomed fan-favorite Q, the omnipotent alien who would reappear throughout and beyond the series, including the grand finale ‘All Good Things.’ However, the most significant plot arc concluded in the episode before ‘The Neutral Zone.’ Teased in the 19th episode, ‘Coming of Age,’ the penultimate episode ‘Conspiracy’ had Picard and crew uncover and foil a parasitic alien infiltration at the head of Starfleet.

After dealing with monsters close to home and Federation ideals, TNG’s second major arc was all about establishing a next-generation threat to the galaxy. Roddenberry was keen to mark the Star Trek sequel series out from its 1960s forbear. Worf’s presence on board the enterprise was a clear sign that time had moved on, and he spelled it out in the series’ writing rules :

No stories about warfare with Klingons and Romulans and no stories with Vulcans. We are determined not to copy ourselves and believe there must be other interesting aliens in a galaxy filled with billions of stars and planets.

6 Biggest Retcons To Star Trek History

The solution was the Ferengi, a vicious and distinctive new species mentioned in early episodes before they made their presence felt in the fifth story, ‘The Last Outpost.’ As fans know, the looks and motives of this new threat didn’t work out , and the big-lobed aliens were softly rebooted into the avaricious comic relief that became a popular part of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

The Ferengi retreat left a gap, and the Romulans were ready to fill it . Using the time jump to the 24th century, the show recaptured the mystery of their reveal in the Original Series ’ ‘Balance of Terror’ (the Federation and Romulan Empire had fought a war in the 22nd century, but before view screens!).

The updated villains, who receive a great write-up from Troi in the episode, had new forehead ridges to distinguish them from Vulcans , a new Imperial symbol, and a gigantic new warship. The impressive D'deridex-class Romulan Warbird was the last ship created for the franchise by legendary designer Andrew Probert, who was also responsible for the Enterprise-D.

The fan reception to TNG Season 1 is mixed. It holds an Audience Score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, well under the 93% earned by TNG’s seventh and final season.

However, the final episode has received generally favorable reviews. One Redditor has justified that it’s a perfect starting point for new viewers of TNG as it expertly defines the traits of most of the main cast and sets out Star Trek ’s optimistic vision

The way the revived humans are handled comes in for most criticism, as observed on Reddit . While the episode mainly uses the 20th-century throwbacks as a chance to set out the Federation charter in the 24th century, it’s at the cost of plausibility. Would the enlightened crew of the Enterprise not be more interested in the time capsule that fell into the ship’s path or wary, considering what happened with Khan less than a hundred years before?

6 Most Evil Characters In Star Trek History

The handling of the Romulans stands out, as the Empire snarled back with suitable threat and promise. One Redditor even suggested the episode foreshadowed the approach Deep Space Nine would take to the Federation when they provoked the Dominion . Are the franchise's heroes just bringing trouble on themselves with their smug assertion of how great and correct they are?

An interesting side note couldn’t help but affect how fans perceive the episode as soon as a year after its broadcast. The Romulans were a welcome returning threat, but they were a stop-gap. The Ferengi were pushed aside in preparation for a yet-to-be-revealed major new threat whose presence was felt in the devastating attacks on outposts in the Neutral Zone. It would be a while before the culprits were revealed, even if the stellar cartography and timeline don’t quite match up. ‘The Neutral Zone’ is the first sign of TNG’s definitive enemies: The Borg.

Best Star Wars Movie Quotes, From A New Hope To The Rise Of Skywalker

An incredible legacy of quotable quotes.

X-Wing shooting at TIE Fighter in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

There are many reasons why the Star Wars franchise is iconic. The characters are iconic. The costumes are iconic. The props are iconic. The special and visual effects are iconic. And, right up there alongside all of those other qualities is the dialogue. The full run of the series on the big screen from 1977 up to the present is packed with quotable quotes that are both part of memorable cinematic moments and applicable to everyday life.

It’s in celebration of those great Star Wars lines that we’ve put together this feature – highlighting all of the best bits from A New Hope , The Empire Strikes Back , Return Of The Jedi , The Phantom Menace , Attack Of The Clones , Revenge Of The Sith , The Force Awakens , Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , The Last Jedi , Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Rise Of Skywalker.

Darth Vander in Star Wars

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

This is one of the lines on the list that is all about delivery. “Disturbing” is a weak adjective in the context of the scene (Darth Vader confronted with doubt about the existence of the Force), but James Earl Jones’ gravitas makes Vader’s understated word choice terrifying.

Obi Wan waves off stormtroopers in Star Wars

“These aren't the droids you're looking for.”

Obi-wan Kenobi unleashing the first-ever Jedi mind trick is an exceptionally badass move. To create a pun with a Star Wars line that you won’t find later in this week, it’s wizard.

Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

In the full context of the Skywalker saga, this line has two standout readings. On the one hand, Obi-wan becomes a Force Ghost, able to aid Luke Skywalker on his journey to become a Jedi. On the other hand, Darth Vader is aiming to kill the man who treated him like a son, and Obi-wan knows that will haunt him no matter how hard he embraces the Dark Side.

Han Solo shooting console in Star Wars

“Boring conversation anyway.”

Not only is this an excellent example of classic Han Solo snark, it’s a fun line to drop in real life when someone you’re talking to gets disconnected from a call.

Luke trusts the force in Star Wars

“Use the Force, Luke.”

In Star Wars , this is the urging from Obi-wan that sees Luke Skywalker unlock his true potential, but it’s also a potent line of encouragement to trust one’s instincts at moments of extreme stress.

Darth Vader in ship in Star Wars

“The Force is strong with this one.”

The journey of Darth Vader’s relationship with Luke Skywalker is a long one – and it’s really with this line that their connection begins in earnest. Simply tailing behind a X-Wing in his personal TIE fighter, the father sees his son’s potential.

Luke and Chewie in Star Wars

“I have a bad feeling about this.”

Some iteration of this line is uttered in every Star Wars movie, and there’s nothing not to love. Trouble being ahead is the essence of every narrative (everything develops through conflict), and everything about this franchise is deeply rooted in traditional storytelling.

May The Force Be With You in Star Wars

“May the Force be with you.”

This is a line so great that it practically exists beyond Star Wars in the public consciousness. It’s a message of “good luck” that unites geeks everywhere.

Yoda in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

“Do or do not. There is no try.”

Is this line from Yoda in Empire Strikes Back somewhat undercut by Obi-wan saying, “Only a Sith deals in absolutes” in Revenge Of The Sith ? Unfortunately, yes. But by itself, it is an excellent piece of motivation suggesting that you focus on your goals over the efforts to attain them.

Han Solo I know in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

“I love you.” “I know.”

Pure Han Solo goodness here. It’s kind of a jerk thing for Han to say as his potential last words to Princess Leia, but it’s so befitting his character that you just have to love it.

Lando in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

“This deal is getting worse all the time.”

Here is another great line that can easily be used in real life – particularly in moments of frustration. One can’t help but feel a bit of schadenfreude when Lando Calrissian expresses this sentiment regarding his agreement to betray Han & Co. to the Empire… but credit where credit is due, Lando does redeem himself in Return Of The Jedi.

Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

“Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me.”

Darth Vader is well-aware how hatred and anger can erode one’s soul, and in The Empire Strikes Back , he gets Luke on the precipice of following the same path.

Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

“No – I am your father.”

I mean… would anyone have accepted this list as legitimate if I didn’t include this classic line? It’s constantly misquoted, but it’s an iconic moment in the history of cinema.

Admiral Akbar in Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi

“It’s a trap!”

This line from Admiral Akbar in Return Of The Jedi has taken on a life of its own in the internet age… but it’s great independent of its history as a meme. Once again, it’s all about the delivery.

Shmi says goodbye to Anakin in Star Wars The Phantom Menace

“You can't stop change any more than you can stop the suns from setting.”

There aren’t a lot of great lines in The Phantom Menace (there are far, far more terrible ones), but this line from Shmi Skywalker as she is saying goodbye to her son is profound in its acceptance of how life is always about moving forward.

Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu in Star Wars: The Attack Of The Clones

“This party's over.”

This is another line that gets all of its weight from the way its delivered. Samuel L. Jackson is the cinematic incarnation of the word “badass,” and while Mace Windu ultimately suffers what is a pretty lame fate , the actor gets to express his greatest gift with this spotlight moment in Attack Of The Clones .

Amidala in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

“So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.”

The slip into totalitarianism is often aided with populism, and it doesn’t matter if it’s here or in a galaxy far, far away. Science-fiction is designed to reflect our own world, and Revenge Of The Sith does so in stark fashion with this line.

Obi wan you were the chosen one Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

“You were the chosen one!”

Obi-wan Kenobi did everything in his power to train Anakin Skywalker as a proper Jedi knight, but everything falls apart when the Padawan is manipulated into embracing the Dark Side. These five words are all pain.

Han Solo in star wars: the force awakens

“Chewie... we're home.”

Han and Chewie forever belong on the Millennium Falcon, and it’s shocking that they were separated from their ship for an extended period of time after Return Of The Jedi – but at least fans get to witness their return home in The Force Awakens .

Han Solo in star wars: the force awakens

“Crazy thing is... it's true. The Force, the Jedi. All of it. It's all true.”

One of the first things we learn about the Force and the Jedi in the original Star Wars is that their existence was relegated to being fantastical myth… but Han Solo witnessed the magic first hand, and Harrison Ford ’s heavy reflection with this line in The Force Awakens is amazing.

Kylo Ren kills Han Solo in The Force Awakens

“I'm being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain. I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it. Will you help me?”

Controversial as this scene may be, this is a terrific bait-and-switch line. You think Kylo Ren is going to try and fight the darkness within him, but whoops! Instead, he stabs his father in the chest.

Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“That's one hell of a pilot!”

One of the best parts of the Sequel Trilogy is the budding friendship between Finn and Poe Dameron, and their bond is made particularly palpable with the enthusiasm with which this particular line is delivered in The Force Awakens .

Chirut in Rogue One A Star Wars Story

“I'm one with the Force, and the Force is with me.”

There are a number of memorable characters introduced (and subsequently killed) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , and Donnie Yen ’s Chirrut Îmwe is a contender for the title best of the best – in part because of his kick-ass mantra delivered before unleashing devastation.

Saw Gerrera in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

“Save the Rebellion! Save the dream!”

There are a number of great battle cries in the Star Wars canon, but this one from Saw Gerrera is particularly great – delivered with intense and passionate conviction by Forrest Whitaker in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story .

Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi

“Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi.”

Kylo Ren failed out of Luke’s Jedi Academy, but that doesn’t stop the Master from taking his nephew to school in The Last Jedi – with Mark Hamill perfectly delivering the blockbuster’s eponymous line.

Lea in The Last Jedi

“Hope is like the sun. If you only believe it when you see it you'll never make it through the night.”

Hope is an influential presence in the Star Wars universe, as it’s what pushes rebel forces to constantly fight against the oppressive authoritarians despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them. Leia Organa spends decades in the canon fighting that fight, and this line in The Last Jedi is a wonderful expression of how hope keeps her going.

kylo ren in star wars: the last jedi

“They were filthy junk traders. Sold you off for drinking money. They're dead in a pauper's grave in the Jakku desert. You come from nothing. You're nothing. But not to me.”

This is another line that is undercut by material in subsequent stories , but I don’t care: it’s a powerful idea that Rey could come from nothing and nobody to become an exceptionally gifted Jedi knight, and Kylo Ren ripping off the Band-aid in The Last Jedi is shocking in the moment.

Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story

“I'm gonna be a pilot. Best in the galaxy.”

Han Solo is the dictionary definition of a cocksure pilot, and that spirit is very much present in Solo: A Star Wars Story . Alden Ehrenreich delivers this line with the perfect level of conviction and determination.

Not a navy Rise Of Skywalker

“It's not a navy, sir. It's just... people.”

In the last stand against the First Order in The Rise Of Skywalker , it’s not just the Jedi’s final battle with the Sith – it’s about ordinary people from around the universe fighting back against a fascist regime.

You can witness all of these lines in their original context by streaming all of the Star Wars films with a Disney+ subscription – and you can learn about all of the franchise-related projects in the works with our upcoming Star Wars movies and TV guide.
