While they aren't the most supportive type of footwear , it is possible to find a pair that maximizes comfort without sacrificing style, especially if you're looking for something more elevated than sneakers or slip-ons .

According to David Abdoo , DPM, a podiatrist at ​​Salinas Valley Foot & Ankle, flats “are not an ideal choice for activities that require extended standing or walking.” (Comfortable sneakers would be a better option.) But, that doesn't mean you should write them off completely. “It's essential to consider your specific needs, such as high arches or flat feet, and the intended use of the footwear,” he says.

To find the most comfortable flats, we tested 29 pairs in real-world conditions. We looked at the quality and materials of each pair and checked out how the soles moved and flexed. We wore the shoes around our homes and throughout our daily routines, noticing how our feet felt and whether the shoes caused pain, blisters, or rubbing.

We also brought in the experts: In addition to Dr. Abdoo, we also spoke with Shital Sharma , DPM, a board-certified podiatrist with Pinewood Family Care Co. Both doctors weighed in on what to look for in a pair of comfortable flats, signs that your flats need replacing, and more.

We loved that we didn't need to break in the shoes for them to fit well—they felt secure right away and didn’t stretch out over time. The soles were initially a bit slippery but had great traction after we wore them a bit. Our feet felt great after walking up to 10,000 steps daily in these shoes, with no swelling, overheating, blisters, or chafing. 

These shoes were even comfortable to wear during pregnancy with swollen feet, which made us appreciate these flats even more. They stayed in pristine shape throughout two months of regular use and the stain-resistant material resisted any wear and tear. We didn’t need time to break into these true-to-size flats; they were comfortable immediately. These shoes have a breathable knit upper and a flexible rubber sole that feels great while walking thousands of steps per day. Plus, after two months of regular wear, they still felt comfortable and looked high-quality. We loved pairing these flats with jeans, pants, and skirts—and at such an affordable price, you can even stock up on multiple pairs.

We liked the huge variety of colors and styles, with over 25 options ranging from leopard print to flamingo pink. Some styles seem to have more padding and support than others, which made shopping for them a bit confusing. We also loved how they were easy to wash. After stepping in mud, we washed them on a delicate cycle using cold water and a mild detergent and let them air dry. After cleaning, they looked brand-new. 

Our feet felt supported in these shoes, but the soles felt a bit thin. These shoes aren’t the best for rainy or icy weather, as the lightweight rubber soles were slippery on slick ground. Still, these are stylish, comfortable shoes at a great price point.

We loved the robust arch support and that these shoes have the APMA Seal of Acceptance (from the American Podiatric Medical Association), indicating that the design helps promote good foot health. Based on the fit and quality, we expect these shoes to last several years, making the price point worth it. We wore these shoes for two months and they didn't sustain any scratches or scuffs, which is especially impressive considering the shiny material.

These flats felt like wearing a pair of comfy sneakers. We had no problems going up and down stairs, walking around a trade show, and even helping move furniture on a hot day. We did find that the leather upper may need some breaking in—we experienced some rubbing and blisters after one particularly long day, which can happen the first few times you wear a stiffer shoe.

They are very expensive.

We found that these shoes needed a day or so to break in, and initially caused some rubbing and hot spots on our ankles and the tops of our feet. After that, we found them incredibly comfortable. The Nappa leather uppers felt soft and malleable, hugging our feet for an overall comfortable fit.

During our initial testing, we noticed that the leather soles were slim and inflexible, which provided some structure and support but also led to some tired arches after 8-hour days walking around New York City. Despite this, our long-term testing revealed that the thin sole is surprisingly sturdy and reliable, so it may be that it just takes some getting used to.

We wore these flats for dinners out, shopping, work, and errands and found that they held up incredibly well over two months. We also appreciated that the soft leather exterior didn't become scratched or scuffed—the shoes still look fresh from the box.

We love the classic design of these shoes and found that they went well with almost any outfit. The square shape provides plenty of toe room, and the material feels light and breathable even in hot weather and rain. Plus, the cushioned insole kept our feet supported and comfortable for hours on end (and stayed just as plush after two months of testing).

During testing, we found that the flexible rubber soles flexed but still provided plenty of support so that we couldn’t feel rocks or uneven terrain while walking. After two months of regular wear, they got a bit dirty—but after a quick spot-cleaning with shoe cleaner and a towel, they looked as good as new.

Our favorite part of these shoes is the instep strap, which is fully adjustable to ensure a good fit over the top of your foot. We were also impressed by how lightweight and flexible these shoes are. We could fold them flat for easy packing, making them great for weekend trips and travels.

We loved the quilted, cushioned insole, which made us feel like we were wearing comfortable slippers rather than outdoor shoes. The sturdy footbed kept our feet comfortable for up to eight hours of indoor and outdoor wear. 

We tested a velvet pair, which might not be the best choice for hot weather or precipitation (we also found that pet hair stuck to the fabric, so we needed a lint roller handy). After two months of wear, we noticed that the velvet was scuffed in a few places, though the damage wasn't too obvious. Despite this minor drawback, the flats held up well to our long-term tests and remained comfortable throughout. We even got into the habit of wearing these as house shoes—they're just that comfortable.

We loved these stylish wrap sandals as a day-to-night shoe option. In our experience, lace-up straps are usually fiddly or uncomfortable, but these were neither. After we found the most comfortable way to tie the laces (looping them twice around our ankles and securing them with a bow), the shoes stayed secure. Plus, the laces are made from buttery leather that didn't dig into our legs or leave welts. The soles felt thin but weren’t flimsy, and the 5mm of foam padding helped the shoes mold to our feet. They don’t have much traction but are comfortable for wearing to work and out for brunch. 

These shoes are handmade in Spain and come in women’s sizes 3–14, making them a great option for people who wear harder-to-find shoe sizes. The brand recommends avoiding wearing these in the rain and using a leather lotion to keep the shoes supple.

The super-flexible sole was comfortable to walk in, and we liked the light arch support and extra cushioning around the toe and heel areas. We found that the heels of these shoes didn’t slip off our narrow feet or gape mid-step.

During two months of testing, we wore these flats multiple times a week and found that they still looked as good as new (we're notoriously rough on shoes, so this was especially impressive). The knit upper didn't stretch or lose shape, which makes us confident that these will fit well for years to come. Once, we packed just this shoe and a sneaker for a trip and were happy to find that they were versatile for many outfits and occasions. We enjoyed these shoes so much that we're considering buying a second pair in another hue.

We also tested these waterproof flats in rainy weather and noticed water beading up on the shoe fabric rather than soaking in. Our feet still got wet in super heavy rain (because the shoe’s low profile allows rain to hit your feet directly), but the fabric lives up to the water-repellent promise. Plus, the textured rubber sole had fantastic traction and didn’t slip on marble, tile, or wet pavement.

We appreciated the comfortable add-ons, like the padding at the ball of the foot and stretch at the side of the shoe for more flexible movement. Initially, these shoes had a sturdy, solid sole that didn’t bend much, but with time and continued wear, they became more bendable and comfortable. After two months of use, we still feel that these shoes are a reliable, quality pair of flats perfect for warmer months.

We love the shoe's classic shape and color, which makes this pair great for anything from a workday to an outdoor wedding. We also like the low hidden wedge heel, which helps us feel supported while walking. The non-slip outsole provides traction, and the shoes are designed using sustainable materials and packaged in boxes made from 80% recycled paper with soy-based ink. Still, it's worth noting that these shoes took a few hours to break in, and in that time caused some rubbing and blisters on the back of our heels.

These woven sandals are made from super-soft leather with a flexible rubber sole that provides plenty of support. We particularly liked how the leather uppers moved and breathed with our feet, and thanks to the woven design, our feet got plenty of airflow and never felt overheated or sweaty. We love that they're available in five neutral colors, and demonstrate gorgeous craftsmanship and sustainability.

Though we loved the shoe's design and overall versatile look, we wouldn’t recommend them for spending long hours walking. Though they are comfortable to slip on, we experienced chafing and blisters after walking over 10,000 steps, so they're best for days at the office or occasions where you won't be walking far distances.

After two months of testing, the flats didn't show any signs of wear and tear. If anything, we think they look even better, as the leather has softened a bit and has a slightly worn-in look.

Most Comfortable Flats for Narrow Feet

These close-fitting shoes are great for narrow feet.

The sizing is not totally intuitive.

These snug-fitting flats are made from supple, supportive leather that hugs your feet like a glove. The silhouette is more casual, but the high-quality materials make this a pretty versatile shoe that you could wear just about anywhere. Plus, this shoe is available in a wide range of colors—in addition to seven standard colors, there's also a rotating selection of limited edition hues.

We found that the cushioned insole provides good support, and the back pull tab is convenient for putting the shoes on. This is a great shoe for people with narrow feet but isn't ideal for those with wide feet or a higher instep. Keep in mind that there are some sizing quirks: Sizes 5–6.5 run large, sizes 7–8.5 run true to size, and sizes 9–11 run small.

For those shopping on a budget, opt for the Frank Mully Round Toe Ballet Flat , which is versatile and available in many colors. 

We tested 29 different pairs of flats in real-world conditions over several months. First, we examined each shoe for our first impressions of the materials and construction. Then we tested arch support by bending each shoe in the middle and then trying to wring them out like a dish towel. This helped us see if the arches moved easily, and how flexible the shoe felt. 

Next, we broke in the shoes by wearing them for at least an hour around our homes. We noted our first impressions and what made the shoes comfortable or uncomfortable. We assessed the sturdiness of the soles, the fit, and whether or not it was easy to walk around in the shoes. 

After that, we wore each pair of flats over two months, noting any changes in quality, durability, and comfort. Finally, we evaluated each pair for breathability, support, versatility, traction, and signs of wear and tear. We also noted if the shoes irritated our feet, causing blisters, foot pain , or hot spots. 

How to Shop for Comfortable Flats Like a Pro

Arch support.

“Arch support is pivotal in any shoe, including flats,” says Dr. Sharma. “Everyone has a different arch profile, so selecting a shoe that supports your unique arch type (be it high, neutral, or low) is essential. A flat with inadequate arch support can lead to foot fatigue, plantar fasciitis, and other discomforts.”

Flats by nature are, well, flat , so they tend to have less arch support than the typical shoe. Be sure to look for flats that have some support on the bottom, and avoid shoes that have an extra thin sole. To make this process easier, you can look for shoes that have the APMA Seal of Approval , which designates products that promote foot health. If arch support is important to you, we recommend the Vionic Caroll Ballet Flat , which have a removable microfiber-wrapped EVA footbed that provides total comfort.

“Opt for flats made from breathable, natural materials like leather or suede,” says Dr. Abdoo. “These materials allow air circulation, reducing the likelihood of moisture buildup and odors. Additionally, such materials tend to adapt to the shape of your feet, enhancing comfort even during brief periods of use.”

It's worth noting that pretty much all shoes have a break-in period, even ones made of comfortable materials. We found this to be the case in our testing, with many of the shoes feeling slightly tight or too structured at first and then giving way to a more comfortable fit. Going for a naturally malleable material should speed up that process though—we found that to be the case with the Rothy's Square Mary Jane and the Frank Mully Ballet Flat , which are both made of a flexible knit material.

“The makeup of the sole is also important,” says Dr. Sharma. “Dense materials such as wooden soles are poor shock absorbers and can increase stress to the musculoskeletal structure. Rubber and cork materials are preferred sole materials.” All of the shoes on our list have a rubber or leather sole.

There are a few tips to making sure you have the right fit. “A well-fitting shoe should snugly fit the foot without being too tight,” says Dr. Sharma. “There should be about a thumb’s width of space between the longest toe (which isn’t always the big toe) and the end of the shoe. The heel should fit comfortably against the back of the shoe without slipping out. Also, the widest part of your foot should align with the widest part of the shoe." 

Also, you should consider the shape of the shoe. "Narrow pointed tips can force the digits into an unnatural position and can further degrade existing bunion and hammertoe deformities," says Dr. Sharma. "Rounded or squared tips on the forefoot can help achieve a similar fashion statement as pointed shoes without the added pressure and pain.”

You can still find a pair of comfortable pointed-toe shoes—in particular, we recommend the Vivaia Aria 5° Ballet Flats , which have a knit construction that provides a good amount of give. Another dressy yet comfortable shoe is the Naturalizer Samantha D’Orsay Flat , which has a pointed toe but stretchy sides for better movement.

Aerosoles Big Bet Ballet Flat : We liked that this shoe is flexible, lightweight, and cushioned, but we struggled with the lack of arch support. The buckle style works for casual and dressy settings but won’t be great for people who prefer neutral shoe hardware. 

Allbirds Tree Breezers : We loved this shoe's cushy insoles and versatile look. However, we felt like our feet were overheating, even in a chilly office setting—it feels better suited for cold weather wear rather than year-round use. 

Musshoe Pointed Toe Flat : This shoe is comfortable and doesn't pinch or rub. However, we think the soft material around the toe area might show wear and tear over time, and the heel started to bunch after a few wears. We recommend these shoes for short events, but they aren’t ideal for all-day wear.

• Any cushioning on the insole has flattened out, so it doesn’t provide support.
• The shoe has stretched out or lost its shape, so it doesn’t fit securely.
• You start to experience discomfort or foot pain after wearing the flats.

“No matter how much you love them, once they show signs of significant wear, it’s time for a new pair to ensure optimal foot health,” says Dr. Sharma.

Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up. 

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support. 

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole. 

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort. 

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired. 

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag. 

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing. 

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day. 

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear. 

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles. 

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced. 

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes. 

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability. 

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal. 

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes. 

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder. 

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively. 

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly. 

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers. 

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

Best Affordable Flats: Hush Puppies

Hush Puppies makes an adorable ballet flat that’s super comfortable. They’re crafted from a breathable suede so your feet don’t sweat like crazy and, best of all, they’re incredibly affordable. To break them in, I bend the shoe a bit back and forth, and from side to side, to give them some additional stretch and flexibility.

Other things I like about Hush Puppies’ flats: the leather is soft and squishy, so they pack down tightly for travel. I also like how the rounded toe doesn’t show any toe cleavage and provides enough room for your toes to sit comfortably as you walk.

Birdies flats are truly as comfortable as they say.

The cheetah calf hair Starling flats are my go to whenever I need to run errands or walk miles. Thanks to a cushy memory foam interior and non slip rubber sole, these flats can withstand miles of concrete pavement and, a year later, still look brand new.

While they are a little pricier, Birdies is one of the few brands that nails both comfort and style. In fact, I have multiple pairs from the brand because they really do offer all day comfort.

With over 1,000+ reviews , it’s safe to say it’s not just me that loves the Tory Burch travel flats ! The leather is incredibly soft, the fit is quite comfortable, and these flats work great as a driving shoe or walking shoe.

I’ve worn them as part of my casual airport outfit with stretchy jeans and a jacket as well as part of my everyday work uniform with a blouse and skirt. I order my usual size, give them about a day to break in, and over time they mold to perfectly cushion my feet.

The best part is Tory Burch makes them in a rainbow of colors and finishes. I particularly like this blush pink ballet flat with the subtle matching pink Tory logo, although there are gold and silver hardware finishes if you prefer more of a statement!

Each pair is very well made, so they’ll last you a good couple years.

These Nine West flats are really cute.

They’re perfect if you’re looking for a classic ballet flat, and I’ve picked them up in a variety of colors – the black flats especially are very work appropriate with a suit.

If you struggle to find comfortable, stylish flats for work, definitely take a closer look at these Nine West ballet flats. I would also recommend sizing down a half-size as they run slightly big.

Or, you can go with your normal size and add gel inserts for added cushion!

The Frye flats are a cult favorite. Comfortable right out of the box, they’re versatile enough to match any outfit and durable enough to last miles of walking.

Frye uses super-soft antiqued leather for all its shoes, and these ballet flats are no exception! You can get them in pastel suedes, neutrals or metallic finishes.

The only downside to the Frye flats is the bottoms are really smooth, so you can slip occasionally if you’re a fast walker (or klutz) like I am. Just add shoe pads for some grip, and it’s not a problem!

These Skechers are soft, flexible and comfy. Made from a fabric upper, these affordable shoes offer limited stretch, so make sure to buy your regular size! 

If you have bunions, you should definitely give these a go! My mom owns several pairs of Skechers as they hide her bunions quite well while still being comfortable enough for everyday wear.

Comfortable pointed toe flats can be hard to find. Inevitably, the cute ones squish your toes in the front!

Once I discovered Trotters , I was hooked.

These give a really nice menswear vibe to my girlier outfits while still being polished enough to wear to work. I usually pair them with a blouse and ankle pants, and the pointy toe helps make your legs look longer.

I find these loafers super comfortable to wear, even for long periods, as they’ve got some padding in the insole. They come in black, off white, pink, suede and printed versions.

I also really love these woven flats and think they’d look perfect in the summer!

Trotters Flats

I’m a huge fan of French Sole .

They make really high-quality ballerina flats as part of their core shoe line, with some embellished versions each season if you want something unique. 

The ‘Jigsaw’ is a beautiful scalloped shoe that looks very similar to the designer flats Chloe makes (but obviously much more affordable!) and the leather is unbelievably soft – no painful digging into your feet!

It features a rounded toe, so no foot cleavage – thank goodness – and a slight heel just high enough to make you feel like you’re not barefoot on the ground. I’d say the foot bed support is light to medium.

In general, French Sole works best for narrow feet. These are available in a huge range of colors – both suede and leather!

If you want a comfortable flat for work, consider these Naturalizers , which come in a wide range of neutral shades and have a fun buckle on the front.

They look much more expensive than they are! The footpad is slightly padded and they’re a chic, sophisticated flat to match any suit or wide legged trousers.

I typically try to buy shoes made of real leather, since they’re better for your feet.

If you want gorgeous leather or suede shoes, Coach is the brand to beat! These classic ballet flats are simple yet stunning, and I love them equally in black or the dusty pink.

The footbed is lightly padded, the heel doesn’t slip off your foot and the micro heel raises them slightly off the ground. I knew when I got these that the classic shape wouldn’t go out of style, and they’ve held up well for years!

Size down a half-size for the best fit!

Most Comfortable Flats for Work: Sam Edelman 

Sam Edelman is one of my go-to shoe brands since they make cute, comfortable shoes that look like more expensive designers at a very affordable price point.

Case in point: these classic flats are a great alternative to the Chloe Lauren flats…at less than a fifth of the price.

They have a classic look, with a scalloped edge that works equally well in the office as a work flat as they do on the weekend when worn to brunch with a tee and jeans.

I never get blisters on my heels when I wear these (even if I wear them all day!), and the foot bed is lightly padded. Sam Edelman makes these comfy flats in a couple different neutral colors as well as in both suede and leather.

Best of all? There’s no toe cleavage!

Best Cozy Flats: UGG

These UGG loafers feel like wearing clouds on your feet. They’re super comfortable, have fantastic arch support, and are great quality!

I wear UGG slippers around the house and most days, transition into these out the door… so it feels like I’m still wearing my slippers to work! UGG says they’re made with triple layer foam cushioning to provide that extra support and comfort.

I love the classic metallic flats to add a pop of color to outfits, but you could opt for the black or nude for a more conservative, neutral look. Usually, I have to size up for UGGs.

What to Look for in Comfortable Shoes

While it can be relatively easy to find comfy sneakers these days, chic flats are a little tougher.

To help, I stock up on memory foam shoe inserts , heel cushions and heel liners ! There’s a couple elements you want to look for to find the perfect flat:

• Adequate Sole Support
• Breathable Fabric
• A Roomy Toe Box

Not all flats are created equal.

Finding comfortable shoes that don’t pinch, squeeze, rub or create blisters can feel impossible. I walk a lot on concrete pavement in New York, so I prefer insoles with a bit more support to cushion and absorb the shock.

Bonus points if they’re molded for arch support!

How to Make Flats More Comfortable

If you fall in love with a pair of pretty flats that don’t have built-in support, you can try sizing up a half-size and adding shoe inserts and cushions to beef up that comfort!

I also try to stick to high-quality leather or suede shoes without fabric uppers so that my feet can breathe.

There’s nothing worse than stinky feet, and usually the culprit is poor-quality shoes. To make my suede shoes last longer, I spray them with this protector when they’re straight out of the box!

And finally, for all-day comfortable flats I usually opt for a rounded toe.

Over the last few years I’ve tried flats but I ended up with blisters or they were very uncomfortable and I’d return them. I really feel in love with the cute little bow on the Nine West ballerina flats. I searched all the websites before finally giving up. I can’t find those shoes in black in a 8 1/2 or 9. Great review of some iconic and comfy flats. As a feminine male that has worn ballet flats for the past 15 years I have to say my Tory Burch flats have always suited me needs. First of they’re comfy and secondly they have lots of eye popping appeal and a distinct feminine look.

One of the biggest trends for fall is the return of the ballet flat, shepherded in by celebrities including Meghan Markle, Hailey Bieber, and Sofia Richie. Ballet flats first surged in popularity in the ‘40s and ‘50s, worn by style icons like Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie Kennedy. Inspired by shoes worn by dancers, they convey a certain je-ne-sais-quoi French elegance that can transform a white T-shirt and a pair of jeans into a thoughtful and refined outfit.

But the best feature of the shoes might be their packability. I always like to throw an extra pair of ballet flats in my suitcase , especially if I’m traveling somewhere where heels aren’t an option. (After a day of hiking through Patagonia, it’s nice not to have to wear your muddy boots to dinner.) Even when your suitcase is full, there’s a good chance that there’s always room for a pair of slim ballet flats.

But there’s no getting around the fact that ultra-flat shoes are uncomfortable at times, so I canvassed some of my most stylish jet-setting friends and rounded up brands offering the most travel-friendly pairs.

Everyday ballet flats

One of my favorite footwear brands, Aerosoles, creates ultra-comfortable and supportive shoes that still look stylish. I’ve walked 30,000 steps in a day through Paris in a pair of Aerosoles without any discomfort—it’s essentially orthopedic footwear masquerading as fashion. The Dumas is an updated take on the ballet flat, staying true to the original style with a dainty bow but adding a pointed toe for an extra sprinkle of sophistication. The durable rubber sole and built-in arch support mean this shoe is much sturdier than it looks (and since it comes in half sizes, you can get the fit just right).

Alice Russotti , Founder and Creative Director of Porta , swears by Le Monde Beryl’s ballet flats. For her homewares boutique in Brooklyn, Russotti traverses the globe in search of skilled artisans—and when she’s not traveling for work, she’s out exploring with her two young sons. Russotti has mastered the art of the elegant and comfortable travel uniform , down to the perfect pair of ballet flats. Le Monde Beryl’s Mary Jane style adds a strap that’s reminiscent of the ribbons on professional pointe shoes. Travelers can go for the classic leather version or opt for something edgier with leopard calf hair or mesh styles.

“The Mansur Gavriel square-toe ballerina flats are IT!” says Devin Duckworth, Design Director at Oltre Magazine . These ultra-chic flats lend a high-fashion edge to any outfit. Made from Italian lambskin, the timeless shoes are made to mold to your feet for ultimate comfort. Another pro: These ballet flats can be monogrammed with one letter on each shoe.

The original ballet flat—created by Rose Repetto for Brigitte Bardot to wear in the 1956 film And God Created Woman —is still available, and perhaps even better than ever. Michelle Peralta , a film producer and pilates instructor, loves to travel with the Cendrillon ballerinas. “They’re lightweight and dainty,” she says. Jasmine Chong, a fashion designer and co-owner of Celestia Yacht who frequently travels between Southeast Asia and her home in New York City, is partial to Ferragamo’s ballet flats. The comfortable Varina style comes in red, amaretti, and black patent leather with a grosgrain bow and metal detail on the toe. Chong says that what really makes the shoes comfortable is that they come in different widths, so you’re able to find a size that fits you best.

Colorado–based UX designer Amanda Nevarez (who moonlights as a fashion and travel blogger) had talked herself out of buying ballet flats since they’re not very practical for her home in Vail. “But I couldn’t resist any longer and bought the Miu Miu leather ballet flats,” she says. “They are like stepping into a cloud of butter. Honestly, the most comfortable thing I’ve ever had on my feet.” The comfortable square-toe flats come in leather with a rubber sole and a removable elastic bow and strap.

Budget-friendly flats

While these foldable ballet flats certainly aren’t sturdy or comfortable enough for all-day wear, they are a traveler’s secret weapon. The round-toe velvet flats are little more than a fancy rubber-soled sock, but they are undeniably handy. The lightweight shoes, which come in 12 colors, fold into a pouch that can easily fit in your coat pocket or purse. If your feet are worn out from a night of dancing in stilettos or you have an unexpectedly steep walk on a cobblestone street to get to your destination, you can just kick off your heels and slip these on. It’s a $20 solution that means you don’t have to spend a whole evening in frumpy footwear.

The $50 sparrow ballet flats from Band of the Free are a no-brainer for traveling fashionistas on a budget. The silky flats are almost identical to real ballerina slippers and even come in a dusty rose color for those looking to take the balletcore trend to the next level. The soft-soled shoes offer little support, but they’re extremely packable and comfortable enough for a night out.

Can’t beat a good pair of flats! They don’t take up much room and they go with almost any outfit. Buy the most comfortable pair you can find, even if you spend a little extra. You won’t regret it!

I love your posts but it would be great to get suggestions for those of us who don’t quite fit grown-up shoes. I wear a size 3 (wide) and it is getting harder and harder to find nice adult looking shoes in small sizes.

I always travel with my Vionic flats and/or booties I have plantar fasciitis in one foot and these are the best. The booties are also great for a rainy day.

For a recent trip to Italy I purchased the Cole Haan Women’s Cloudfeel All-Day Ballet Flat and they are perfect in every way! They have a memory foam interior and rubber grip tread so you won’t slip on wet surfaces! They are my favorite!

Very helpful list! I’m headed to Scotland for two weeks soon and have been struggling with shoe selection. Due to a recently sprained ankle, I’ll be wearing hiking boots most of the time for support. Tieks are my go-to flats for travel. They are more expensive than those on your list but they last! They’re legit the most comfortable ballet flats I’ve ever owned, come in more colors than you’ll ever need, and are the only flats I can wear without socks!

Alas, my Dexflex ballet flats and moccasins have finally worn out and there are no longer any Payless stores in Canada 🙁

I am seeing lots of cute ballet flats online that I will have to try out, but not many options for moccasins/loafers/driving shoes except super expensive Tod’s or heavily logo-ed Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren.

Can any of your readers suggest comfy, stylish, reasonably priced moccasins/driving shoes in black, navy or other neutral colour?

Everyone always needs a classic black flat. Personally I love the Hush Puppies Chaste black flats too! Super cute and pack well! They are my go to for work and dressing it up for a vacation!

I so enjoy your blog and all the great tips. And I’ve purchased several of the comfy travel items you’ve recommended. I’m wondering if you’ve ever reviewed visors or no show socks for shoes like ballet type, etc. I’m looking for a summer visor without large obnoxious logos and for low profile socks that don’t slip down. So many of the socks say no slip, but they all slip off and I end up throwing them out in some airport.

I have two pairs of the Skechers. They have quickly become my go-to shoes for outdoor summer parties. They keep my toes protected from mud and other peoples’ feet in crowded backyards.

I agree that black flats are a great pick, especially in France, but sometimes I think black gets boring so I often go with a gray shoe which also pairs with everything; or even a classy metallic.

I just got a pair of flats from Cole Haan. I had lost my black flats at the mosque and needed new ones. I walked in and asked for the most comfortable pair of black flats they had. The ones they gave me were amazing. They didn’t need any breaking in and were travel ready immediately.

One of the most cliché-but-true pieces of fashion advice we've all heard is this: Have at least one good pair of flats. Heels are fun and all, but flats are the shoes you can really live your life in. They're essential when putting together the best workwear outfits , and make for the best travel footwear since they take up so little space in your luggage. 

To use another cliché, comfort is key here. Your flats should be easy to break in and provide ample support for your arches (or lack thereof). The most comfortable flats I own are Rothy's The Point II , which feature their signature "In Love" padded insoles. I also love how they're easy to fold up and pack in my tote.

Having high arches has deterred me from shopping for ballet flats in the past. I'm guilty of wearing sneakers where they don't belong. But as much as I love my tennis shoes, they're owed a break now and then. 

One of the most common orthopedic conditions is sore arches. Vivienne flat remedies those pains with ample arch support, yet still maintains a sleek ballet flat silhouette. Naturalizer, which belongs to the same brand family as Dr. Scholl's, designed the Vivienne to be as comfortable as grandma's orthos without the chunky rubber sole.

Allbirds is probably better known for its Silicon Valley uniform-mandated sneakers like the Wool Runners and Tree Runners . But when you don't want to wear sneakers but still need the same comfort and support, you're better off with its flats, the Tree Breezer.

These are the flats you'll want to pack in your suitcase because a) they're very light and you can fold them up to maximize packing space, and b) you can walk around in them all day long.

Quell any fears you have of hobbling through a walking tour or calling it an early night because your feet have become one giant blister. The Breezers have bouncy outsoles made from sugarcane and soft, odor-minimizing Merino wool-lined insoles. The knit collar wraps onto your foot securely, and the rest of the shoe's knit body is breathable and feels silky smooth against your skin. Plus, they're machine-washable, so they're easy to take care of even if you get them all grubby on your trip.

Since the style is more sleek and formal than Allbirds' other shoes, they won't look out of place in a dressier environment. Ballet flats look deceptively simple. You know if you're reading this guide that it's hard to get the fit just right — some pairs gape, while others rely on uncomfortable heel elastics to stay on your foot. 

You won't encounter this problem with Margaux. It makes flats in a large range of sizes (from 3 through 14), including half sizes. Instead of suggesting you size up or down for wide and narrow feet, the company ensures fit precision by offering each size in Narrow, Medium, and Wide widths. Best luxury: Mansur Gavriel Dream Ballerina

There's something to be said for splurging on a really gorgeous pair of designer heels that you only wear on special occasions, but honestly, I've always felt that it makes more sense to spend that money on a practical pair you'll get more wear out of. A beautiful ballet flat that'll never go out of style is exactly the kind of shoe that deserves the designer treatment.

We think Mansur Gavriel's Dream Ballerinas are the absolute best designer flats out there. The $395 price tag isn't so unreasonable when compared to flats from brands like Chanel ($750+) or Louboutin ($500+), and the comfort rivals that of Everlane's Day flat , our best-overall pick on this list. 

The lambskin leather is buttery soft and the insoles provide enough cushion that the flats wear almost like a loafer. The bow on the shoe is actually functional, so you can use it to tighten or loosen the opening. The bottom of the shoe has just enough traction that I feel comfortable on slippery tile surfaces, which can't be said for other slick-bottomed designer pairs I've ultimately passed over. Ultimately, these flats have it all. And even after having tested every other pair of flats on this list, I can confidently say these are worth the cost.

As far as sizing goes, I am usually somewhere in between a 7.5 and 8, and I ordered a size 38 (the European equivalent of an 8). Mansur Gavriel's site says to order a full size up from your usual size, but in my experience, it's better to opt for either your true size or one half size up if you sometimes find your true size to be tight in other brands. — Sally Kaplan

Know your true size. Flats are an intimate category of footwear since they're typically worn without socks. Take your best fitting shoes and check out where they're made.This will inform your knowledge of how different countries size up or down in comparison and help you find the closest match.

An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!

The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!

If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.

Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!

No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!

Spend the first day of your itinerary taking your own self guided Moscow walking tour around the historic Red Square! This is Moscow’s compact city center and every stop on this list is within easy walking distance to the next! Get ready to see all of the top Moscow landmarks!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

• Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
• Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees. 
• Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

• Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
• Cost: USD $15.00
• Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

• Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
• Cost: USD $8.00
• Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Novodevichy Convent | Gorky Park | State Tretyakov Gallery | All-Russian Exhibition Center | Bolshoi Theater

On your 2 day itinerary in Moscow, you’ll have a chance to use the city’s excellent public transportation service! You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!
• Cost: USD $5.00
• Food nearby: Culinary Shop Karavaevs Brothers is a cozy and simple place to have a quick bite, they also have vegetarian options!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!
• Cost: Free! 
• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner! 

Insider Tip: When planning your 2 days in Moscow itinerary, keep in mind that most museums in Moscow are closed on Mondays, this includes The State Tretyakov Gallery!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The Alexander Garden

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

7 most PRESTIGIOUS & EXPENSIVE districts in (and near) Moscow

1. Rublevka

Rublevka, simply put, is Russia’s “Beverly Hills”: home to rich, famous, and influential Russians who live in luxury, hidden behind tall fences and walls. Technically, it is located outside Moscow, some 10 kilometers to the west via the Rublevo-Uspenskoe Highway, yet the area, and its residents, are nonetheless an integral part of Russia’s capital.

Officially, there is no such an administrative unit as Rublevka. Instead, the name of the area is a social construction, popularised in mass culture as a synonym of being filthy rich, as it is one of the most expensive residential areas in the world. It is also a play of words as – you know it – the ruble is the Russian currency.

In Tsarist Russia, nobility built homes here, only to be replaced by dachas of Lenin, Stalin, and other state officials after the Bolshevik Revolution. In Soviet times, famous scientists, artists, and writers — including Mstislav Rostropovich, Andrei Sakharov, Dmitry Shostakovich — had dachas in Rublevka. Today, Rublevka is inhabited by oligarchs, multi-millionaires, and all-powerful figures. The Russian President’s official residence is in Novo-Ogaryevo – not far from Rublevka.

Although Rublevka is considered the most famous luxury residential area in the immediate vicinity of Moscow, there are many other elite villages and areas in the Moscow Region, most of which are located to the west of the capital.

2. Ostozhenka and the ‘Golden Mile’

The Golden Mile is an unofficial name for one of the most expensive residential areas in Moscow. It is a small piece of land where luxury real estate has been built. It is located between Ostozhenka Street and Prechistenskaya Embankment, a 10-15 minute walk from the Kremlin, with some of the buildings overlooking the Moscow River.

With prices up to $40,000 for a square meter, Ostozhenka is often listed among the most expensive streets in the world. Given that an average apartment there is around 240 square meters in size, the price tag for it can reach as high as $10 million or even more.

“[Before 1989], this area was abandoned, because of the planned construction of the Palace of the Soviets (which was to be built on the site of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour). The entire area was planned to be cleared to make possible the construction of a wide avenue leading to the Lenin Hills [currently known as Vorobyovy Gory],” says Alexander Skokan, an architect and a founder of the Ostozhenka Bureau.

However, the Palace of the Soviets was never built. Instead, luxury houses began to be erected there. Consequently, it may be hard to come by residents in this area, as most of the buildings have been bought for investment purposes.

3. Khamovniki

Khamovniki is the official name of a district located in central Moscow. It starts from Aleksandrovskiy Sad next to the Kremlin and spreads across to the Luzhniki Stadium and Sparrow Hills (Vorobyovy Gory) in the western part of the city.

Historically, this is where weavers used to live, who were known as ‘Khamovniki’ in the 17th century. Hence, the name of this historic district.

Today, Khamovniki is one of the most popular areas of the Russian capital among apartment buyers. Yet, it’s also one of the most expensive districts in Moscow, where one square meter of apartment costs approximately $11,000; a price tag far beyond the average in Moscow.

The Moscow River, multiple parks and numerous metro stations make this elite district ecologically clean and also easily accessible from anywhere in the city. Pre-revolutionary houses, Soviet buildings and modern projects are available on this stretch of land. Among others, one of Russia’s greatest writers Leo Tolstoy owned an estate in Khamovniki in 1882 (which is now part of his family estate).

4. Yakimanka

This is a neighboring district to Khamovniki, lying to the Southwest of the city center. Everyone who has ever been to Moscow knows Gorky Park, which covers most of the district’s territory. Yakimanka is one of the most stylish areas in Moscow and it is well known for its clubs, cocktail bars and cozy restaurants, as well as for the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Muzeon Park of Arts.

The district is also home to old factories built in the early 19th century. Most of these buildings have been rebuilt as offices. Elite real estate in this district may also cost up to $20,000 per square meter.

This is another historic and luxurious district, craved by anyone who dreams of settling in Moscow. It stretches from the Moscow Kremlin on the west to the Moscow River in the east, with New Arbat Avenue being its major artery. Here, the famous Spaso House , the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Russia since 1933, is located, as well as other historical landmarks .

As in many other districts in Moscow, Arbat has it all when it comes to real estate: pre-revolutionary houses, Soviet buildings and modern luxury apartment blocks. An average price tag for a square meter of real estate here is $10,000. Yet, naturally, you can find much more expensive housing than that in the area.

6. ‘Presnya’

The Presnensky district, as it is officially known, lies to the immediate north of the Arbat district. Although real estate here is generally not as expensive as in the above-mentioned districts, there are two especially affluent areas that make the average price tag skyrocket: Patriarch Ponds and the Moscow City business center, where the famous skyscrapers are located.

One square meter in one of the towers of the Moscow City business center can cost up to $20,000. Considering there are premium apartments that take a whole or even multiple levels, the final price can be extremely high.

7. Tverskoy, Meschansky, and Zamoskvorechye

Zamoskvorechye.

These three districts — two to the north of the Kremlin and one to the south — are all affluent areas of the city. The State Duma and the Governor-General Building (which today is the Moscow Mayor's Office), among other important buildings, are located in Tverskoy district.

These three districts are similar to each other in the sense that they lack vacant land to make major new development projects possible. Instead, a relatively small number of offers is on the market. The average price of one square meter of housing in these areas amounts to $7,300.
