7 Amazing Fall Wine Tours Across the U.S. and Canada

Revisit an old favorite region or discover somewhere new on these self-led wine tours.

What better way to immerse yourself in fall's glorious array of colors than with a flight of wines before you? Between the U.S. and Canada, there's a slew of fantastic wineries — in new and exciting wine regions as well as in the reliable, world-famous stalwarts — to check out this fall.

Lake Chelan

The Pacific-Northwest in the fall is, in a word, idyllic. And it's deliciously idyllic when paired with a wine tour in the Chelan Lake region, an official American Viticulture Area (AVA) since 2009. Over 30 wineries means some planning is in order. For Rhone-inspired wines, begin your scenic wine journey at Cairdeas , where you can also enjoy cheese and charcuterie — unless you're inclined to pack a picnic to enjoy on the grounds. Tsillan Cellars estate-grown wines are sipped in surroundings reminiscent of Italy's Lake Como, which may make it hard to steal away to the next winery. But steal away you should because family-run Succession will make you a Washington wine lover for life. The winery comes especially alive on Sundays when live music pairs with a number of varietals, including Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Hill Country

In a play that perhaps not many saw coming, Texas Hill Country, that hard-to-define swath of land west of Austin and north of San Antonio, no longer just boasts some of the best barbecue in the state. Thanks to numerous destination-worthy wineries, such as Perdenales Cellars and Kalasi Cellars , the region has earned a spot on wine lovers' radar. There are, in fact, more than 50 wineries in and around Fredericksburg, the heart of Hill Country, and more than a dozen tour options. You can also opt to hop on the 290 Wine Shuttle for more impromptu exploring of the region. The shuttle stops at more wineries (17 in total) than you could possibly experience in a day, but half the fun is in the sheer breadth of options. The Texas Wine Collection is a solid choice, considering it's really three wineries in one, and Heath Sparkling Wine is so confident you'll reach bliss at first taste that they've named one of their flagship sparkling wines Euphoria.

Napa Valley

California's wine country delivers on too many fronts to list here, but top billing goes to its stellar wines, jaw-dropping backdrops, and intimate DIY tasting tours (though there are a number of tour operators in the area who can help plan tasting itineraries or take you where you want to go). If you think you've seen all there is to see in Napa (impossible!), begin your tour at Cliff Lede Vineyards , where the art and music-themed blocks (e.g., "Dark Side of the Moon"), are almost as appealing as the Rock Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Opting for the Backstage Tasting will have you sipping Napa's bold flavors in a room featuring rotating art exhibits. Don't linger too long though because Bouchaine Vineyards is waiting to lure you in with its newly designed tasting room atop a hill, complete with incredible views. The Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is rich, juicy, and balanced, and the Hyde Vineyard Syrah will turn you into a cheerleader of the oft-misunderstood grape.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

It doesn't get much prettier than this. Once a hidden gem drawing lovers of theater and local, seasonal farm fare, Niagara on the Lake is also chock-full of wineries — 38, to be exact. The wineries, many of which also offer full-service dining, are mostly spread out, so you'll probably want to rent a bike or arrange for a tour to take you around the cute little town. Start out at Reif Estate, where wines are tasted in a sensory garden. Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant is open for lunch and makes for a good second stop along your wine journey. Two Sisters is less than 15 minutes on foot from Peller, making it a good post-meal option between tastings. If you can get to Southbrook , which enjoys the status of being Canada's first wine estate to obtain both organic and biodynamic certification, tasting the Triomphe Orange is mandatory.

The North Fork

It's all too easy to while away an afternoon sipping wine on the North Fork of Long Island, AKA the sunniest spot in New York State. While definitely no longer under-the-radar, there are enough wineries and enough routes to keep the intimate vibes going. Although some visitors to the region swear by fall as the best time to visit the beaches and snag tables at popular restaurants, the autumn wine scene is where it's really at. Want to taste old-world wines in a new-world vineyard? Raphael's Cabernet Franc and Merlot are not to be missed. From there, enjoy a warm welcome from nearby Bedell Cellars , where both children and dogs are welcome. If you want to visit Paumanok , arguably the most well-known of the region's wineries, reservations are recommended. Of course, you could opt for a tasting at Palmer Vineyard instead, where walk-ins are welcome, and rosé is still flowing. Either way, you're in for a treat, no ocean view required.

The Okanagan Valley

The first thing most people think of when they think of Canada's rugged western province is probably not wine. Considering the bevy of activities on hand all around British Columbia, that's fair. But those in-the-know-folks and devout lovers of the boozy grape juice are well aware of Kelowna's deserved spot on the wine trail. Roughly 40 wineries dot the Left and Right Bank of Okanagan Lake, providing superior views and relaxing vibes. Mission Hill Family Estate deserves every accolade it's been bestowed — in a not-to-shabby showing, it is Canada's only winery to win Winery of the Year five times — but go for yourself to see what makes their Viognier and Pinot Blanc so special. Afterwards, head to Indigenous World Winery for a truly unique experience. Cap off the tour with a glass of Viognier, Frizzante at Little Straw Vineyards.

It's been fun to see California's wine scene expand outside of the state's northern region, often just referred to as "wine country" by domestic travelers, especially because a funky city like Santa Cruz, whose wine cup runneth over, is a blast to visit in general. Fall may be the quintessential beach town's best-kept secret though. Biking is an especially fun way to embark on a tour of the beloved surf city's wine scene. Rexford's Chardonnay has the potential to win over even the staunchest ABC-er (Anything-But-Chardonnay), and if it's sustainability that you're after, a visit to Storrs is in order. Another excellent producer of Chardonnay and other Burgundian grapes, all of the grapes are grown with minimal intervention in a biodynamic setting. Of note also: Sone Cellars , MJA , and Silver Mountain .

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. While a trip to one of Europe’s famed wine regions is certainly worth the time and effort, you actually don’t need to travel that far (or blow all your PTO days) to enjoy an amazing wine-fueled getaway this year. Given that every state in the U.S. produces wine, chances are there is a destination-worthy wine region within driving distance from you, so let’s make 2024 the year to take advantage!

California , which produces over 80% of the country’s wine, is home to many world-class wine regions (a few of which are on this list), but we don’t want you to feel limited to just the Golden State—there are many wine regions scattered throughout the United States that are worthy of exploring. In recent years, Santa Barbara has earned many accolades, including being named Wine Enthusiast ’s 2021 ‘Top Wine Region of the Year,’ and the county continues to be applauded for its diverse growing sites, varied wine tasting experiences, and ongoing efforts in sustainability.

Santa Barbara County is unique in that it’s situated between transverse mountain ranges, which funnel in cooling ocean influences from the Pacific to create a multitude of microclimates, along with significant temperature swings from day to night, allowing for a longer growing season. Add in Santa Barbara’s varied topography and diverse soil structures and you’ve got the perfect recipe for growing a wide range of grapes—over 70 different varieties, in fact.

Diversity is truly the name of the game in Santa Barbara Wine Country, where you can sip nuanced Pinot Noir, savory Syrah, racy Chardonnay, complex Cabernet Sauvignon, sophisticated Grenache, juicy Pét-Nat, and skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc—all in the same day. The wine tasting experiences are just as varied, from casual tastings at urban tasting rooms to barrel tastings at converted warehouse spaces to elevated food and wine pairings at design-forward wineries overlooking vineyards. Another bonus: it’s not uncommon to find the winemaker pouring the wines themselves. Don’t Miss: Los Alamos Los Alamos may be quaint (blink and you may miss the exit off the 101), but don’t overlook this small town 15 miles north of Buellton. Once a dusty little western town, “Little LA” has since become a must-stop for foodies and oenophiles, where many of the region’s best restaurants—including a One Michelin Star restaurant—are all on the same street. Pinot Paradise

Sonoma County, California

World-Class Reds

Walla Walla, Washington

Ten years ago, you may not have been familiar with Walla Walla (other than for its sweet onions), but nowadays this small growing region along the Washington-Oregon border is widely known as a premium wine region. In 2020, Walla Walla Valley—already named Wine Enthusiast ’s 2019 ‘Wine Region of the Year’—was crowned the winner of ‘America’s Best Wine Region’ by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, and interest in the region hasn’t slowed since. It’s not surprising, though, since the Walla Walla Valley boasts some of the state’s best vineyards and wineries. Now home to more than 130 wineries and nearly 3,000 acres of vines, it’s producing excellent examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.

The Walla Walla Valley AVA encompasses land in both Washington and Oregon, and wineries and tasting rooms are spread out throughout six distinct districts. Each area offers a different slice of Walla Walla, with wines and tasting experiences just as diverse. Foodies will also appreciate the eclectic mix of impressive restaurants in and around town, which each draw on the rich spectrum of seasonal produce and artisanal products from the region.

The Birthplace of American Wine

Northern & Central Virginia

Virginia is recognized as the birthplace of American wine, when early colonists first attempted making wine here in the early 17th century, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the industry began to gain traction. Today, Virginia is home to over 4,000 acres of vineyards, where grapes like Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Norton have taken center stage. And just recently, Wine Enthusiast crowned Central Virginia’s Charlottesville area as the ‘Wine Region of the Year’ for 2023.

Thomas Jefferson—you know, that famous scholar, statesman, and third President of the United States—was one of the early believers in growing grapes in his home state of Virginia. A master gardener and wine connoisseur, his first foray into viticulture began in 1773, though his efforts to grow European varieties failed again and again due to pests, disease, and unfavorable weather. Luckily, the pioneering spirit of this region helped grapes persevere, and today’s winemakers and growers have learned to work with the region’s continental climate to find their sweet spot. The last decade, especially, has shown a huge increase in both the quantity and quality of Virginia wine.

There are over 300 wineries in Virginia, spread throughout eight different AVAs. One of the most visited is Northern Virginia’s Wine Country, aka “D.C.’s Wine Country,” which is only an hour outside the nation’s capital. With its bucolic country roads, picturesque rolling hills, and historic towns, it manages to feel worlds away. Here, you’ll find boutique wineries offering intimate experiences as well as larger, more design-forward estates, while about an hour further inland will land you in Central Virginia—home to the famed Monticello AVA—where a thriving wine scene is offered alongside history, culture, and quality cuisine. Texas may not be the first place you’d think of when considering a wine tasting trip, but it has been steadily blazing a trail in wine. As the fifth largest wine producing state in the U.S., Texas is home to over 500 wineries scattered throughout the state, where you’ll find wines made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Tannat, and Viognier, as well as from lesser-known grapes like Muscat Canelli, Lenoir, and the white hybrid of Blanc du Bois.

While there are eight delineated growing regions, the centrally located Texas Hill Country has become the hot spot for wine tourism. Conveniently situated outside the big cities of Austin and San Antonio, Texas Hill Country is a vast wine region offering visitors plenty of charming towns and natural scenery in which to explore. Add in a unique food scene, diverse wineries, and wide open spaces ideal for watching epic sunsets, and it’s no wonder this region captures the hearts of visitors from near and far.

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the historic town of Fredericksburg is a great base for exploring the region’s numerous wineries. Here, you’ll find tasting rooms, good shopping, music venues, and noteworthy restaurants , all wrapped up with authentic Texas hospitality and a dose of German flair.

Fun Fact: Fredericksburg was settled by German immigrants over 160 years ago, and its German heritage can still be experienced through its food, architecture, and town festivals.

Don’t Miss: Texas Hill Country Cuisine BBQ may be big in the Lone Star state, but you’d be surprised by the diversity of offerings you’ll find in Texas Hill Country, where restaurants celebrate the flavors and ingredients of Texas and throughout the world. Down-to-Earth Vibes

Edna Valley, California

While most people are familiar with California’s Paso Robles Wine Country (more on that below), nearby Edna Valley is much more of a hidden gem. Situated south of San Luis Obispo just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, Edna Valley is a small viticultural area noted for its cool coastal climate and long growing season—one of the longest in California, as a matter of fact. Here, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shine, though diverse microclimates and rich oceanic and volcanic soils allow for several other grapes to flourish, including Albariño, Viognier, and Syrah.

Edna Valley may produce a steady stream of acclaimed wines, but the experience and vibe here remain down-to-earth and unhurried (this is the uber-friendly and laid-back Central Coast, after all). Small, family-owned wineries and larger, more modern wineries alike are known for their warm hospitality as much as they are for their wine. And, because the land here isn’t as inflated as some parts of California, you can still find quality bottles without enormously expensive price tags.

Fun Fact: Edna Valley’s winemaking history dates back to the 1800s, when Spanish missionaries planted some of the first mission grapes.

Don’t Miss: Biking Edna Valley is a great place for cyclists, who will appreciate the region’s scenic vistas and quiet country roads. Of course, you’ll capture the same views of Bishop’s Peak and some of the other “Nine Sisters” (the chain of volcanic morros that dot the landscape) by driving, but exploring the valley on two wheels means stops for wine tastings and snacks are all the more essential.

Cool-Climate Haven

Snake River Valley, Idaho

Idaho may be known for its scenic vistas, epic skiing, and, of course, potatoes, but did you know the first wineries in the Pacific Northwest were in Idaho? Though Prohibition squashed the industry, today Idaho is in the middle of a great wine resurgence, with the number of wineries increasing by almost 58% in the last decade.

Most of Idaho’s 65 wineries and 1,300 acres under vine can be found in the Snake River Valley—Idaho’s first AVA—which is located in the southern part of the state just 30 miles from Boise. Here, a more moderate climate, minimal rainfall, and a high elevation make it more conducive to growing grapes, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.

Besides being conveniently close to Boise, the Snake River Valley, home to the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, is a must for wine lovers looking to discover the next under-the-radar wine region. Along with a casual environment, you’ll find a plethora of family-owned wineries producing handcrafted wines (with incredibly affordable price points), intimate tasting and dining experiences, and a general sense that people are truly excited to welcome you. And, because the region is still coming into its own, winemakers have the freedom to experiment with new clones, winemaking techniques, and varieties. No doubt the best is yet to come from this emerging wine region.

Fun Fact: Some vineyard elevations reach nearly 3,000 feet above sea level—some of the highest in the U.S.

Don’t Miss: Boise’s Urban Wine District While quiet country vistas are the norm for wineries in the Snake River Valley, a handful of producers are taking a different approach by operating urban wineries near downtown Boise. If you’re looking to ditch the car and walk or bike instead, you’ll love the unique urban offerings, where quality wine, unpretentious vibes, and diverse settings are the name of the game.

Of course, there are many other dynamic U.S. wine regions that you should definitely seek out, such as Arizona’s Valle Verde, New Mexico’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe regions, Colorado’s Palisades, Oregon’s Rogue Valley, and Lake Michigan—to name just a few. Simply put: don’t limit your choices to just this list, because when you take the time to explore all the amazing wine, scenery, and experiences that each state has to offer, you may just end up with a newfound appreciation for our nation’s wine and the people behind the wine.

They're serving up "Napa Valley's coolest wine tasting," in their words, and we couldn't agree more. 2. Wölffer Estate in Sagaponack, New York

If you're going to be in the Hamptons or want to escape the concrete jungle for a sweet weekend getaway, Wölffer Estate  in Sagaponack, New York awaits. Their sessions are sure to ease your mind, body, and soul, and are offered May through October. Or, after your winery visit, you could join winemaker Roman Roth on a spectacular Rhône River Wine Cruise . This once-in-a-lifetime getaway will immerse you in history, wine, and some utterly divine French cuisine.

Check out Wölffer Estate on your next road trip, and plan on ordering a great charcuterie board or small plates while you're at it to enjoy with your wine and best friends. It will be a beautiful day and an even better experience. Wölffer Estate also makes their own ciders , too.

3. Croteaux Vineyards in Southhold, New York

Croteaux Vineyards in Southhold, New York is a real treat for rosé lovers. They make rosé and only rosé. You heard that right — they're one of a kind in the United States and harvest vinifera grapes to produce refreshing rosés only. Their tasting garden is an experience not to be missed. From beautiful weeping cherry trees to a chic barn, to vintage wrought iron chairs, to a hanging backdrop of Croteaux bottles that is the ultimate nook for pictures, your experience at this winery will certainly be picture-perfect.

According to Long Island Wine Country , every year, Croteaux introduces a new vintage of rosés. Wine lovers can purchase them in early spring, but they had better shop quickly, as those bottles are always gone when autumn rolls around.  Condé Nast Traveler captured the essence of Croteaux Vineyards when they said, "If you love rosé, this is probably your version of heaven." One reviewer on TripAdvisor even dubbed Croteaux "a little bit of France on the North Fork," telling people to, "GO! The setting is lovely the wine is crisp and cool on a summers day." Another reviewer had the best idea — to try "six different rosés" with your eyes closed. What better way to spend a beautiful afternoon in a beautiful garden, steps away from the grape vines?

Croteaux couldn't have said it better when they stated that "Once you go pink, it's all you'll want to drink."

4. Beneduce Vineyards in Pittstown, New Jersey

Voted one of 25 top vineyards in the United States by Travel + Leisure , a visit to Beneduce Vineyards in Pittstown, New Jersey should definitely be on your wine bucket list. What makes Beneduce really stand out is their small lot production, which allows them to capture the unique personality of each wine produced there. This means that each wine truly represents the vineyard the grapes came from, paired with the winemaker's individual touch.

Enjoy a glass or bottle on Beneduce's beautiful stone patio, play some lawn games with your crew, listen to live music, hang out in the Crush Pad (covered seating further from the music for a more intimate wine and food experience), and grab something to eat from one of the nearby food trucks. Check out the upcoming schedule on the winery's website, where you can find which local musicians will be performing and the food trucks that will be serving up delicious eats. The winery also holds an 18 and up " group therapy " event with live music on Saturday evenings, in addition to Sunday picnics where the whole family can join in on the fun.

5. Alta Colina in Paso Robles, California

This gorgeous vineyard that's situated high atop a hill in Paso Robles, California is well known for making and serving up Rhône-style wines, a variety that draws on grapes traditionally grown in the  Rhône Valley region of France (via Wine Enthusiast ). And when we say high, we're talking 1,800 feet above sea level! The steepness of the California landscape, the sun-drenched soils, the climate, and its distance from the Pacific Ocean all play a part in Alta Colina's incredible grapes they use to make wine. Plus, the estate is so picturesque, every wine lover needs to experience it. 

Not only does Alta Colina have immense character and style as a winery, but the names of the wine are so darn cool, too. Take, for instance, their 12 O'Clock High Viognier, Toasted Slope Syrah, and Sun Worshipper. You can book a Summit Vineyard Tasting, a Cellar Door Tasting, or you can stay at The Trailer Pond and wake up surrounded by the vineyard's natural beauty. The Trailer Pond is a campsite located in the center of the winery, complete with five vintage campers that are available to rent for a two-night minimum stay. There, you can taste wine and enjoy the views in a totally unique way.

6. Folktale Winery in Carmel, California

You've heard of a beer garden before, but this winery has its very own wine garden! Located in Carmel, California, Folktale Winery was an inspiration. The owners believe that each bottle of wine contains a unique story, and at Folktale, each story is delicious and deserves to be shared with those you love.

Folktale was dubbed the "Best Winery to Visit" and the "Best Place for Day Drinking" by Monterey County Weekly . They both sound like great plans to us! So what are you waiting for? Relax and sip in the breathtaking wine garden, listen to some live music, and order great food like sweet patatas bravas with fermented chili aioli or a fish ceviche with wood-fired avocado, tostada crisps, pickled chilies, lime, and cilantro. If pizza's more your jam, try a truffle carbonara pizza, which includes pepper crema, truffle pecorino cheese, egg yolk, and sage. Oh, and while we're discussing the menu, you can't leave without trying their Valrhona chocolate chip cookies, complete with Chantilly cream, chocolate sauce, and fresh berries. Are we right or are we right?

7. Round Barn Estate in Baroda, Michigan

This circular, barn-style winery is simply extraordinary. It comes as no surprise that Round Barn Estate  in Baroda, Michigan was voted as one of the "10 best wineries and vineyards for live music" by USA Today's 10Best . Their Jammin' in the Vineyard series takes place on the weekends, and live music Fridays run Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. The lineup is, well, simply jammin'.

Round Barn has also been dubbed the best winery in Michigan by Eat This, Not That! , where its live music receives a notable mention yet again, in addition to the awesome selection of hiking trails on the property. As a matter of fact, while you're sipping, you can hike and enjoy the beauty of Mt Tabor Trails, which connects Round Barn Winery and the nearby Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant. According to Moersch Hospitality Group , "The best part of these trails — taking your favorite beverage to-go is encouraged!" What better way to enjoy your wine and take in the beautiful views and lush gardens than a nice hike?

If you feel so inclined to stay awhile, check out the two charming nearby rentals , the Estate House and Chateau Five Corners, that are on the vineyard and mere minutes away, respectively. While you're there, be sure to visit the  Round Barn Brewery & Public House for brews, good times, and tasty eats.

8. Oeno in Kailua, Hawaii

For a truly different winery experience, consider traveling to Kailua, Hawaii to make your own wine  and bottle it. Not only can you choose your own grapes from all over the world for this spectacular experience, but you will fill your bottles, put your own corks into them, place the foil onto each bottle top, and create your own personalized label. Oeno has lots of suggestions if you want a bit of guidance while making your label design.

Oeno (pronounced Eeh-No), which means "the Greek goddess of wine," uses an Italian method and all-natural ingredients with hardly any preservatives (only enough are added to prevent the wine from spoiling). The end result is magnificent. The wines are very refreshing and go down quite smoothly. Interestingly, Oeno is the only winery located on the entire island of O'ahu. 

As one person on Google Reviews said, "To all my wine lovers, this is a must." Another said it's "hard to find, but worth it," while another wrote, "Such a cute area tucked away in beautiful Kailua. The wine was amazing and the bread was to die for! You could taste everything was homemade with love!"

There's something for everyone at Oeno, as the winery makes sangrias, whites, reds, reserves, and dessert wines. Whether you stop by to make your own wine or simply to taste the wines at Oeno from their artisan or chalkboard series, this day will be epic. You're in for a treat at Oeno!

9. Arrigoni Winery & Cider Co. in Portland, Connecticut

Arrigoni Winery & Cider Co.  in Portland, Connecticut is simply fun for everyone. This family-owned winery offers live entertainment, a gorgeous property, food trucks, yoga events, paint nights, wine pairing dinners, fundraisers, psychic readings, and so much more (consider your social calendar saved). They even have a beautiful outdoor patio and stage area where they hold live musical performances. So, be sure to bring a group of friends so you can split a carafe of sangria and have both good wine and good times.

While you're at Arrigoni Winery, you'll also want to check out the unique ciders they have on tap, like Blueberry Ginger, Maple Madness, Prickly Pear, and Plain Jane Vanilla, to name just a few. Or, sip one of their impressive selection of  wines  (they have more than 20!) that have won multiple awards, like their Sparklin' Rozy, a pinot noir sparkling rosé, or Sunset, a fruity Reisling. You can pair them with plenty of great food from the winery, including their spinach artichoke dip, flatbreads, and other goodies.

Head to this fun spot for an afternoon of sangria or an evening of wine slushies. As it says on their Instagram , "Sometimes wine is just necessary." So head to Arrigoni, sit back, and sip away!

10. Fireside Winery in Marengo, Iowa

Listening to live music, cozying up fireside with a refreshing glass of wine, and enjoying a Brie dip or flatbread pizza ... who could want more? Located in Marengo, Iowa, Fireside Winery is definitely a go-to spot for locals and travelers alike. Whether you'd like to taste wine, buy some, or simply kick back by the fire and order some food truck eats with your favorite glass of red, Fireside is a great choice. One reviewer on TripAdvisor dubbed Fireside a "special treat," while another said, simply, "I'm sold." House Beautiful even chose Fireside as the best winery in Iowa, so give them a visit ASAP.

Fireside's website is chock-full of fun and useful information, including wine and potato chip pairings and wine and TV binge-watch events. From virtual jigsaw puzzles to information on every wine gadget you need to make your sipping experience more enjoyable, Fireside Winery has your weekend plans covered in such a creative way. And the best part is, you don't even have to stay for only a day. You can really make it a full weekend plan or longer by booking a night or more at The Retreat at Fireside Winery, a charming four-bedroom space complete with a kitchen and eating area, and all just steps away from the winery.

11. Luna Rossa Winery in Deming, New Mexico

If you're planning on heading to the Southwest, be sure to put award-winning Luna Rossa Winery  in Deming, New Mexico on your itinerary. It is cozy, enchanting, and a fun stop for any trip. Luna Rossa translates to "Red Moon," and this name inspired the owners to produce some amazing wines from their vineyards in New Mexico. Their wine is made completely from their grapes grown in New Mexico's arid desert climate. They make wines from German, Italian, Spanish, and Rhône types of grapes, lending real variety to their production.

Looking for somewhere to start? Consider trying Luna Rossa's malbec, with traces of violet and tobacco, or its NV Conquistador, which is a sweet post-dinner wine that should be served chilled and pairs well with chocolate or fresh pears. Their 2018 Pinot Grigio won a double gold award at the 2019 San Francisco International Wine Competition. They have also received silver awards for their malbec, merlot, Montepulciano, Shiraz, and Viognier wines, according to The Las Cruces Bulletin . This winery also has a pizzeria in addition to the winery at their Las Cruces location, and it just so happens to be one of Las Cruces' best eateries.

From Southern California to Washington, the best wineries in the West offer delicious wine and gorgeous landscapes

There’s no denying that the Western United States has two things in spades: dazzling scenery and very good wine. (The second one, so much so, in fact, that you can also find region-specific guides for California’s  Napa Valley and  Sonoma ). But the West Coast has better views and vino than ever, stretching all the way from Washington to the tip of Southern California and even Arizona. We’ve compiled some of our favorite scenic settings for sipping chardonnay or champagne and leaning into relaxation. Without further ado, take a look at the most beautiful wineries on the West Coast.

1.  Healdsburg, CA: Flowers Vineyards and Winery

One of the best producers of chardonnay and pinot noir in California, Flowers Vineyards & Winery opened a tasting room in Healdsburg just one year ago, in 2019. While its vineyards are well known for their remote location on the coast, the tasting room is just as beautiful. Admire Northern California's famous coastal fog over the estate's redwood groves  with a view  of Mount Saint Helena in the background as you sip a Sonoma Coast chardonnay—sounds perfect. Be sure to make a reservation, as walk-in opportunities are very limited.

2.  Quincy, WA: Cave B Estate Winery

The winery’s tasting room is usually packed with music lovers.  Located right next door to the Columbia Gorge Amphitheater (the original winemakers build the gorgeous venue), the winery has jaw dropping views of flood-carved cliffs and the water below. Tastings, which occur outside on the piazza or in the second-floor tasting room, come packed with amazing wine. The area is known for whites like sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and semillon , but Cave B has produced some noteworthy cabs, merlot and syrah as well. 

3.  Newberg, OR: Penner-Ash Wine Cellars

Head to this unassuming winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley for its views of Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson, but also for its story. Founding winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash was the first female winemaker ever hired in Oregon, and Penner-Ash Wine Cellars is her sustainable dream realized. The terrace is a comfy spot to sip on the winery's signature grape—pinot noir—while you take in the gorgeous landscape.

4.  Walla Walla, WA: Abeja Winery and Inn

Winos will already know about the gorgeous varietals that can be found in Walla Walla, Washington, but if you’re seeking a landscape that’s just as beautiful, Abeja is our pick. Located on a nearly 150-year-old farm at the base of the Blue Mountains, the 38-acre site offers an inn for overnight stays along with the winery. The wine list ranges from cabernets to merlots, while vineyards, creeks, gardens, and lavender fields provide a serene setting.

5.  Jenner, CA: Fort Ross Vineyard

The drive to Jenner is half the adventure as you cruise along Highway 1 on the California coast to this hidden winery located just a mile from the ocean. The higher altitude (55 acres of varying terrain rise to 1200 feet above sea level) gives the grapes a unique flavor and also affords sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. You can sip cool-climate pinot noir or chardonnay, but the Pinotage (similar to a pinot noir but more earthy tasting) sourced straight from South Africa is really special. Plan ahead, as Fort Ross is not currently accepting walk-ins.

6.  Vail, AZ: Charron Vineyards

Only thirty minutes from downtown Tucson, Charron Vineyards is one of southern Arizona's oldest vineyards.  At 4200 feet above sea level, the vines enjoy warm summer days and cool nights, the perfect growing conditions for the winery's merlot, rosé or even a wine slushie. Just as spectacular are the vies of the  Santa Rita Mountains from Charron's flower-covered patio. Opt for the winery's picnic lunches, where you can sip wine en plein air.

7.  Dundee, OR: Argyle Winery

While Argyle winery makes chardonnay, riesling and Oregon's signature pinot noir, you're here for the bubbles. Argyle makes its champagne using the méthode champenoise, which means its the closest you can get to the real thing in the United States. The indoor tasting room, a former hazelnut processing plant, has glass walls which lead to a spacious, covered patio for uninterrupted views of the wine region.

8.  Healdsburg, CA: Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery

You can't head to California wine country and not taste a chardonnay. You'll find some of the state's best at Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery. While tastings usually take place underground, you'd do well to soak up the gorgeous lanscape and view before you descend—Lake Sonoma lies below and the winery grounds include five acres of flower gardens featuring 10,000 tulips. Tasting appointments are available daily, and guests can also enjoy a Sunday brunch option from April through October.

9.  St Helena, CA: HALL Wines

HALL Wines's smaller, more intimate tasting room in St. Helena is located at the historic Bergfeld Vineyard at the base of the Mayacama Mountains and includes 33 acres of pristine Napa Valley land. Sip on the estate's signature cabs while you seek out the winery's famous Bunny Foo-Foo sculpture (just one of 35 pieces of contemporary artwork that punctuate the property), and admire the rich landscape from the Great Lawn.

10.  Newberg, OR: Rex Hill

Rex Hill offers an impressive variety of seating arrangements, from a cavernous interior with floor-to-ceiling windows, to cozy tables in wine caves, to an outdoor patio that spills out onto the lawn. A 2020 renovation modernized the tasting room while maintaining the site’s architectural history. Rex Hill also has a long history with delicate pinot noirs—their signature—but you won't be disappointed by the chardonnay either.

11.  Malibu, CA: Malibu Wines

Unfortunately, Malibu Wines’ popular, rustically picturesque has been closed since 2018 due to the Woolsey Fire. Fortunately, the winery also has a wine and beer garden location about 20 miles west of Burbank to make up for it in the meantime. The location really leans into the beer garden aesthetic, with a flat outdoor patio and picnic table seating, but keeps things scenic, dotted with string lights and filled with greenery, including a massive tree that’s the hearth of the outdoor area.

The tasting of more than 130 top Italian wineries helped kick off the Vinitaly trade fair

Some of Italy’s most amazing wines flowed freely in Verona on April 13 at the 13th edition of OperaWine. The gala tasting spotlighted 131 of Italy’s top names in wine. Created by Wine Spectator in partnership with Vinitaly and Veronafiere, OperaWine has become the unofficial kickoff to Vinitaly, Italy’s largest wine trade fair.

“OperaWine—it’s an institution now. It’s how we start Vinitaly,” said Filippo Mazzei, managing director and co-owner of Mazzei wines, which includes Castello di Fonterutoli and Belguardo estates in Tuscany and Zisola in Sicily. “And of course, for each of us, it’s a show representing what we are doing now.”

Nearly 1,900 people attended the invite-only tasting, held in the spacious Gallerie Mercatali. The crowd included international journalists, sommeliers, wine experts and educators.

“One of our favorite ways to highlight Italian wine each year is at OperaWine, with the tasting of ‘Finest Italian Wines,’” said Wine Spectator senior editor Bruce Sanderson. “The first edition was 2012, and more than a decade later we’ve expanded the tasting from 100 to 130 producers, showcasing the breadth and diversity of high quality Italian wine.” Wineries from all 20 Italian regions poured at the event, selected by Wine Spectator senior editors.

Italy’s Diverse Wine Scene Is the Big Draw

While guests could find top examples of Brunello and Barolo, Soave and Fiano, the wines also represented Italy’s incredible diversity of grapes, regions and styles, from a Sicilian blend of Nero d'Avola and Perricone to Sagrantino from Umbria to a Tintilia from Molise.

The latter was Catabbo’s Tintilia in Anfora, fermented in clay vats. “Our Tintilia in Anfora has attracted the attention of many importers and many, many curious wine lovers,” said Sara Catabbo of Cantine Catabbo. “Maybe for the novelty of the grape or maybe for the use of the amphora. I don't know! Fact is that it was a great success!”

This year’s OperaWine put an additional focus on Sicily , a reflection of the ongoing importance of these wines in the U.S. market as well as the synergy displayed by the region’s producers as they continually strive for greater quality. In total, 16 Sicilian wineries poured at the 2024 tasting, including 11 who had attended before. The five newcomers included estates owned by producers with historic wineries in Piedmont or Tuscany who saw potential in Sicily and found success investing there two or three decades ago.

“We might not have planned to show a Sicilian wine [at OperaWine],” said Mazzei, who usually pours a gran selezione Chianti Classico from his family’s Castello di Fonterutoli estate. “But then we were very happy. It was good and interesting communication [about Sicily.]”

Vinitaly Continues to Grow

At the Vinitaly wine fair, which took place during the four days following OperaWine, approximately 4,600 exhibitors welcomed more than 130,000 visitors from around the world. But for those lucky enough to attend, OperaWine was a highlight.

“It was a great and beautiful impression,” said Isidoro Vajra, winemaker and co-owner of G.D. Vajra in Piedmont alongside his siblings, Giuseppe and Francesca. “When I came back home [from OperaWine], I said to all of my family, ‘If VinItaly is like OperaWine, we will be so happy.’”
