Bike & Walking Tours in Normandy

If you are looking for an exceptional France bike tour , Normandy is one of the most beautiful regions of the country. Normandy is mostly known for the role it played in shaping the world’s future during World War 2 . From the beaches where Allied troops landed, to the military cemetery and the WW2 museum, each spot is moving and charged with history. But there is more to Normandy than its beaches and War memorials. Our cycling tours will take you to Bayeux where you will see the amazing and well-preserved 11th century tapestry and to the breathtaking Mont St Michel , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Touring through typical villages or along the coast, you will be charmed by Normandy peaceful scenery and magnificent architecture . And all this just a few hours away from Paris.

**We do not recommend taking this tour around the anniversary of D-Day, June 6th. Hotels fill up very far in advance, there is more traffic on the roads and some of the routes may be closed.

Famous worldwide for being the setting of the Allied troops landing during World War 2 , Normandy has played a key role in the shaping of Europe’s future. With our trips you will be able to tour this wonderful region both by cycling and hiking. Following the Atlantic coast , you will be able to explore the WW2 landing beaches between Caen and Sainte Mère l’Eglise, the city of Bayeux with its unique 11th century tapestry, and the world-famous Mont Saint Michel . Did you know that the stunning abbey was built based on a dream made by the local bishop, Bishop Aubert in the 8th century? You can also explore the inland following the Veloscenie, a unique cycling itinerary starting in Paris and following the river Seine until the Mont Saint Michel. Don’t forget to stop for a taste of apple cider and Camembert along the way, some of the most tasty products of the region!

REASONS TO DISCOVER NORMANDY

Mont St Michel

The Mount and its abbey is the second most visited site in France and an architectural gem. Saint Michael’s Mount is located on an island between the two regions of Normandy and Brittany. Accessible at low tide, it has been a monastery since the 8th century and served as a prison during the French Revolution. The view of the Mont, from across the water is breathtaking. And the view from the mount of the Bay is just as wonderful. Don’t leave without a tour of the abbey itself!

This town is perhaps best known because of the Bayeux Tapestry , an embroidered cloth (230 ft. long and 20 in. tall) depicting William of Normandy’s 1066 conquest of England. You should also stop by and visit the Cathedral Notre Dame , built during the 11th Century. Bayeux was also the first town to be liberated during the Battle of Normandy . So you are bound to find much history there.

While exploring lower Normandy , you will definitely want to ride through Caen , its capital. Start early to visit the markets selling the delicacies of the region: cider , calvados and all sorts of cheeses . Continue your tour on to the Castle built by William the Conqueror, which offers a panoramic view of the city. Don’t miss the Abbaye aux Hommes (“Men’s Abbey” aka Abbey of Saint-Etienne) and the Abbaye aux Dames ( “Ladies’ Abbey” ) also built by Duke William in the 11th Century. Also, the Caen Peace Memorial is probably France’s best WW2 museum and therefore a must!

WW2 Landing Beaches and American Cemetery

On June 6, 1944, 130,000 soldiers landed on beaches across Normandy’s coast including Sword , Omaha and Utah Beach . Ride along the coastal roads and stop on the different landing sites to reflect on the events that took place there. Cycle to the American Cemetery , formerly known as the American St. Laurent Cemetery. Located on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach, it is famous for its 22-foot bronze statue of “the Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” as well as the Garden of the Missing, a wall listing 1,500 soldiers who died in the landings. It is without a doubt one of the most moving WW2 sites.

Arromanches

This small town played a big part in World War 2. The famous man-made Mulberry Harbors was located off the coast of Gold Beach in Arromanches and its remnants can still be seen today. The first museum commemorating D-Day – the Musee du Debarquement – can be found here too. You will learn more about the Mulberry Harbor, the Overload Operation and see original WW2 weaponry. You can also watch archive video footage of the D-Day landings. History buffs are in for a treat.

NORMANDY FOOD AND WINE

Normandy is famous for its apples, from which is made an excellent cider . Nothing compared to apple juice. Cider is traditionally served with crepes. The Calvados , a brandy made from distilled cider, is also locally produced and a must to try. One of numerous specialties from Normandy is the Poulet au Calvados , simmered in calvados.

Make sure to enjoy Normandy’s famous cheeses while pedaling across the region. French’s best known cheese from lower Normandy, Camembert , has a fresh, soft and creamy taste and like most things, gets better with age. The Pont l’Evêque cheese is solely produced in Normandy; passing it up would be a mistake! So take a break from cycling, grab a nice bottle of wine, and enjoy the rich, delectable cheeses this region offers.

NORMANDY GEOGRAPHY

Two hours from Paris , on the Northwest coast of France, Normandy stretches from the Mont St Michel and Brittany northbound to the city of Caen.

From beautiful beaches and picturesque granite cliffs, to cows, green pastures and apple trees, Normandy offers very diverse landscapes with something for everyone to enjoy! On your cycling tour you will appreciate the half-timbered houses , so typical of Normandy. In cities like Bayeux or Caen medieval castles and abbeys testify to the region prestigious past.

NORMANDY HISTORY

The name of the region Normandy, and of its inhabitants, the Normans , come from the Norwegian and Danish Vikings who came to settle there around 850 AD.

During the Hundred Years’ War between France and England, the region was held at various times by both French and English forces. But in 1450, France finally recovered Normandy.

In more recent history, during the Second World War, the beaches of Normandy were chosen by the Allies for the D-day landings to free France.

The Pays d'Auge of Lower Normandy is literally blanketed in apple orchards, where numerous cider and calvados (apple brandy) producers reside in their half-timbered houses. Beginning in Bayeux, the focus of this trip is firmly on the gastronomical delights of the region together with a well thought-out cycle route which showcases the land of William the Conqueror. A fascinating part of the journey encompasses the historic sites of World War II including the German Battery of Longues-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach, where the Allied Invasion took place, the Pegasus Bridge and the American War Cemetery at Colleville-sur Mer. With time in the delightful town of Bayeux with its impressive cathedral, exquisite historic houses and famous tapestry and the harbour town of Honfleur there is no shortage of fascinating sights. The cycling takes you along backroads and canal paths, past historic locations and impressive coastline with options daily to choose a shorter or longer route. Please note that e-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and given the higher speed possible, should only be ridden by confident cyclists. The route travels along quiet back roads with low traffic. When entering and leaving towns you will be on roads with more traffic where care needs to be taken. Welcome to Normandy

Bienvenue! Meet your guides at the Rennes train station in the morning to transfer to our first boutique hotel. Facing one of France’s most iconic landmarks, the UNESCO-classified Mont Saint-Michel sits pretty atop a rocky islet just a stone’s throw away from the property. After getting fitted for your bike, set out on a brief ride to the Gothic-style Mont Saint-Michel abbey and explore the petite village that surrounds it. Following our visit and our first lunch together, we hop back on our bikes to traverse the bay and its picturesque countryside, with highlights including a visit to the only German military cemetery on French soil. Our first dinner together is a celebration of our unique position between Brittany and Normandy—a Breton seafood feast.

Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Mont Saint Michel, Montitier, Tanis, Moidrey, Bouvoir Accomplished:  18 miles / 29 km, elevation gain: 567 feet / 173 meters Accommodations: Hotel Ermitage

From the Bay to Bayeux

Framed by a striking view of Mont Saint Michel, enjoy a relaxing breakfast at our hotel before we head toward Bayeux. We take our time riding along coastal roads, stopping along the way at the quaint market town of Avranches. Continue riding along flat country roads that take us through quintessential French villages before pedaling over a few small but mighty hills, warming us up for a special lunch at Manoir de la Beslière—a country house run by a local DuVine guide and his wife. Enjoy lunch and homemade cider before transferring to the town of Bayeux, about 1.5 hours away. While in town, seize the opportunity to admire the Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th-century masterpiece depicting the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings. Later, settle in at our next hotel—a lovely 18th-century château where we’ll spend the next two nights. Spend the evening at our château dining on seasonal produce harvested right from the garden.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Avranches, La Haye-Pesnel, Folligny, Bayeux Accomplished:  32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 1,371 feet / 418 meters Accommodations: Chateau d’Audrieu or Château la Chenevière

D-Day Beaches

We’ll start the day with a spin alongside old watermills on our way back to the coast. A gentle ride mixed with plains and forest landscapes brings us all the way to our next destination. Our main focus today is visiting and contemplating Omaha Beach. A local historian will point out the dramatic history of this place that’s present everywhere: the beach, the plains, and the cemetery. Words cannot describe what you will see or feel—you can only understand the intensity of this setting by experiencing it yourself. After lunch, we’ll wind our way along the coast to another crucial cliff: La Pointe du Hoc, where American soldiers persevered in a brutal defense against German counterattacks. From here we shuttle back to our châteu to relax and refresh before we reconvene for dinner in town.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Sully, Port-en-Bessin, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, La Pointe du Hoc Accomplished:  34 miles / 55 km, elevation gain: 1,450 feet / 442 meters Accommodations: Chateau d’Audrieu or Château la Chenevière

La Côte Normande: Mulberry Harbor, Juno Beach + Honfleur

Today we will continue cycling along the coast, delving deeper into the sacrifices made by soldiers worldwide to liberate Europe. Our first stop is the seaside town of Arromaches-les-Bains—an artificial port commissioned as a vital landing site during WWII. The remnants stand as a powerful testament to the town’s significant role in supporting Allied troops. From here we pedal to Juno Beach, an eight-kilometer expanse dedicated to the Canadian Infantry Division. Take your time paying homage to the fallen soldiers at the Juno Beach Centre before we regroup for a refreshing lunch on the water. In the afternoon, your guides are ready to shuttle you all the way to Honfleur, unless some extra miles between Deauville and Honfleur call you to get back in the saddle. Tonight, explore the charming port of Honfleur at your own pace and dine on your own—your guides are happy to offer recommendations.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch Destinations: Arromanches-les-Bains, Courseulles-sur-Mer, Deauville, Honfleur Accomplished: 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 758 feet / 231 meters Longer Option: 44 miles / 71 km, elevation gain: 1,693 feet / 516 meters Accommodations: La Ferme Saint-Siméon

Our ride begins in Honfleur, “a ravishing port full of masts and sails, crowned with green hills and surrounded by narrow houses,” as Victor Hugo aptly put it. Pedal through small, quiet villages and endless apple orchards on the Route du Cidre, named for the cider and Calvados produced here. As we ride through the Pays d’Auge region, we’ll stop at a family-run distillery for a Calvados tasting paired with local cheeses named after the nearby town of origin: Pont L’Évêque. Spend the afternoon at the hotel spa or explore Honfleur’s charming shops and churches. We’ll regroup this evening for dinner at our hotel’s Michelin-reviewed restaurant.

Meals:  Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations:  Honfleur, Coudray-Rabut, Pont-l’Évêque Accomplished:  29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 1,515 feet / 462 meters Accommodations:   La Ferme Saint-Siméon

Wake to one last French breakfast at the hotel, followed by a morning stroll in the harbor, before your guides accompany you to the train station in Le Havre for your farewell to Normandy.

Meals: Breakfast

bike tours in normandy

A beautiful cycle tour along the Normandy coast, which takes you to the most famous landing beaches of the Allies on D-Day as far as the Cote Fleurie, which is characterized by the Belle Epoque. From Sainte-Mère-Église to Cabourg or from Arromanche to Honfleur, discover the different faces of Normandy. You will find an astonishing variety: rolling green hills, long fine sandy beaches, steep cliffs and half-timbered houses. All interspersed with impressive memories and moving moments of history.

bike tours in normandy

Itinerary at a glance

Experience the history of the second world war up close on the normandy coast. in contrast to the terrifying battlefields of the past, the present offers beautiful natural landscapes and architecture..

Visit the center of the medieval town with its covered arcades, unique in Normandy, its beautiful town houses and the Notre Dame church dating from the 11th to 15th centuries. The origins of the beautiful marina also date back to Gallic times.

Your first exploration tour by bike begins on the greenway through the regional nature park of the Cotentin marshes, Marais de Cotentin. Then continue to Sainte-Mère-Église, the ideal starting point to relive the first hours of D-Day. Take a look at the church's famous tower clock, on which hangs a souvenir commemorating the adventures of one of the first American parachutists to land on French soil. Ride your bike to Utah Beach with its beautiful white sand and the D-Day Landing Museum. At the end of the day, return to Carentan.

Drive to Isigny-sur-Mer, a small fishing village famous for its butter, cheese and caramels. Continue to La Pointe du Hoc, explore the fields still riddled with holes from the D-Day shells fired by Allied ships from the English Channel. Impressive! On Omaha Beach is the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer with 9,387 gravestones. They stand in the immaculate green grass, with the ever-present sea in the background, all of which conveys a sense of peace and tranquillity. We continue along the coast to the pretty fishing port of Port-en-Bessin.

Today you cycle to the impressive German defense battery of Longues-sur-Mer and then on to the golden beach in Arromanches. Here you can visit the remains of the huge artificial harbor built on the orders of Winston Churchill. Don't forget to visit Arromanches 360°, a circular cinema that illustrates the entire history of the Battle of Normandy. The route continues along small paths through the countryside between pretty hedgerow fields - the "bocage" - to Courseullessur-Mer. Take some time to stroll through the picturesque fishing port.

Cycle along Juno Beach and Sword Beach to Ouistreham, past coastal villages and along fine sandy beaches. Take the time to visit the No. 4 Commando Museum or follow the cycle path along the Caen Canal to Pegasus Bridge, where the British Army won a major victory in 1944. After a short stop at the Pegasus memorial, it's time to explore the Cote Fleurie, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in France. Follow the sea to Cabourg with its beach promenades. The town has been a very popular seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century.

A short detour into the countryside of Auge to the village of Beaumont-en-Auge, with its colorful half-timbered houses. You then return to the coast and head for Deauville, a beautiful seaside resort with elegant half-timbered houses. Follow the apple tree-lined coastline to Honfleur with its pretty marina. Take your time to discover the small port, the typical tall, narrow and colorful houses and the timeless narrow streets and alleys. You will see why Honfleur inspired the Impressionist painters.

Leave Honfleur and explore the countryside on a new route. This classic landscape, so typical of Normandy, offers the most beautiful views. The "Pays de Auge" is synonymous with apples and, of course, cider and calvados. Not forgetting the dairy cows and the cheese they produce, which is why Pont-l'Eveque is an unmissable stop on your tour. Take the time to explore the colorful half-timbered houses and carved houses before heading to Deauville and Trouville, where the fish market will make your mouth water. You will be enchanted by the Belle Époque ambience of this seaside town.

The terrain is slightly hilly. You will encounter a short incline from time to time. With an e-bike and some cycling experience you should easily be able to handle this level. Daily distances span 30-65 km.

Gastronomy

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.  The frame and saddle height are set to your height, although you might want to adjust your saddle to be in the most comfortable position. We also recommend doing a first small test drive of couple of hundred meters to be comfortable with gears, brakes etc. If you have an issue with your bike, you can contact the service provider (name of bike rental in your reservation) directly. Or you can always call us on our emergency phone number.   Our hybrid touring bikes are at least 21-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below. Experience the advantages of an electric bike on your cycling holiday, particularly when there's a significant gap in ability and experience among cyclists. An e-bike provides a gentle boost up hills, allowing you to easily keep pace with your companions. With a small electric motor and battery, e-bikes make bike trips more achievable, and their batteries can be conveniently charged at hotels. While you still need to pedal, the e-bike significantly reduces the effort required. Familiarity with e-bikes is advised due to their quicker acceleration and heavier build compared to regular bikes, attributed to the electric motor.

The Côte de Nacre The D-Day landing beaches : Omaha, Juno, Gold, Utah The pointe du Hoc and its memorial The American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer Bayeux and its typical houses

Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno Beaches

Along the côte de nacre and through the cotentin marshland.

From Bayeux you ride to the main D-Day landing beaches. Under the allies’ flags still floating everywhere, discover a region forever marked by the events of 6 june 1944.

– Omaha beach, Juno beach, Gold beach, Sword beach, Utah Beach. They witnessed the arrival of thousands of young soldiers from the American, English, French, Polish allied forces. They hold a piece of history and all have something to tell about that day. – Stop in some of the museums you come accross on the itinerary. They will help you visualize the forces in place at the time, the equipment used and geographical surface covered on the D-Day landing. – The American, Canadian and German military cemeteries all demonstrate the extent and violence of the attacks. Sites of great emotional power, they pay a tribute to those who enabled the return of freedom. – Sainte-Mère l’Eglise and its clock tower, famous for a poor paratrooper who landed on it.

Between these sites you cycle through a bucolic norman wooded countryside. The small routes take you to many manors, castles and churches preserved or rebuilt after the war.

A journey between land and sea, from the English conquest in 1066 to the Liberation in 1945.

Daily program

Day 1: Arrival in Caen Arrive in Caen, the main commune in this captivating region and home of the WWII Peace Memorial. Check in at your hotel and then enjoy some free time to explore Caen. We recommend a museum visit to the Caen Memorial - a highly informative starting point to your historical tour. In the evening, you'll receive an orientation briefing from an English-speaking guide.

Overnight in Caen.

Day 2: Loop ride to the beaches of Normandy (option: 25 miles/40 km, 80m elevation gain or 31 miles/50 km, 90m elevation gain) Cycle to Merville-Franceville-Plage in the Calvados area this morning and visit the Battery Museum. Then, pedal onwards to Pegasus Bridge, originally known as the Benouville Bridge. It's here that you can visit the Pegasus Memorial and Museum, dedicated to the first liberators who arrived in Normandy on the night of the 5th/6th June 1944.

Later, you'll arrive in the Ouistreham where, on Riva Bella, you'll behold an impressive view onto the landing area of Sword Beach. Here, you can visit the Atlantic Wall Museum inside the 'Big Bunker' - a former German headquarters. In the Belvedere, you'll find a fascinating orientation table and can visit the Landing Museum.

Day 3: Caen – Bayeux (36 miles/58 km, 349m elevation gain) Today you'll ride from Caen to Bayeux, first reaching Arromanches and the Gold Beach. Here, you can visit Arromanches 360, a circular theater where The Price of Freedom is shown on 9 screens. The D-Day Landing Museum in Arromanches is an informative center for learning about the construction and operation of artificial harbors assembled in front of Arromanches on the days following D-Day.

You'll finish the day in the artistic town of Bayeaux, where you may grasp the opportunity to visit many points of interest, like the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry - 230 ft long, 2 ft high (70 m x 50 cm), and completed in the 11th century. Other sites include the recently re-opened Museum of the Battle of Normandy and the Mémorial du Général de Gaulle.

Overnight in Bayeux.

Day 4: Bayeux – St. Marie du Mont (44 miles/70 km, 336m elevation gain) A strong ride today, starting out from Bayeux and leading you towards some of the most famous WWII sites in the area: Colleville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach. In Colleville, take some time to visit the US Military Cemetery, the chapel, and the memorial dedicated to the youth of America.

Behold a historical scene as you gaze out over the viewpoint overlooking Omaha Beach. Afterwards, ride onwards to La Pointe du Hoc, Carentan, and Utah Beach.

Overnight in St. Marie du Mont.

Day 5: Loop ride to St. Mere Eglise (30 miles/49 km, 188m elevation gain) A loop tour starts from your hotel today with the first focus on the Utah Beach landings, close to your hotel. You'll then ride northwards along the coast towards Quineville, then inland towards St. Mere Eglise, where you can visit the famous battery of Crisbecq, Azeville, and the famous village of St. Marie du Mont.

Extraordinary Adventure

Disclaimer: I wanted to show my kids the Normandy battlefields and we did just that. And my youngest child, an eight year old rock star, was on this trip which is not normal. But it also made it extraordinary. She biked every mile on the route btw! But buyer beware! This may not be the trip for you!

The positive points:

1. Good hotels. Especially Le Grand Hard (near St.Marie du Mont); it is extraordinary and you won't want to leave. It's a 15 minute bike ride from Utah Beach. That is not the case for the other hotels.

2. Good bikes and service. Dropping off the bikes on the first night, David was prompt, professional and made the fitting fun and easy. All the bikes performed as advertised.

3. The countryside is extraordinary - even without the famous and inspiring battlefields. Each beach is different and each day is different. I definitely recommend going from east to west!

4. Some concerns: the GPS and route maps are almost worthless considering the technology on your phone. Google Maps, especially, had better bike routes than what the guidebooks were describing. The GPS units are way out of date and I would NEVER suggest this trip without a working phone with Google Maps! It saved the day often - especially for side trips and accurate mileage and arrival times. The tour company should get updated with current technology ASAP!

5. The return trips to Caen and Bayeaux take away from time at battlefield museums and introduce unnecessary busy roads. There are closer hotels near the beaches. Bayeaux was lovely and the tapestry a highlight but the mileage was too unbalanced.

Everyone at Biketours.com was super friendly and helpful. Food was good. But bring your phone with a good data plan! Because without it, you will be lost and probably going the wrong way. Lots of beautiful little country roads in Normandy. You will be tired every night!

Le circuit de la Loire à vélo réserve de bien jolies surprises, comme le château de Chambord, perle de la Renaissance.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 14 February 2024, updated on 15 April 2024

if the sunny days are making your legs tingle, saddle up! In the land of the Tour de France, there is no shortage of beautiful escapes. With 22,800 km of cycle routes and greenways, 5,500km of regional tourist routes, 3,000 road and mountain bike circuits inviting you to enjoy gentle pedalling as a couple, with your family or with friends. In the countryside, along a canal, by the sea, in the vineyards or in the mountains, from Northern France to the Côte d'Azur and from Brittany to Alsace... here's a small selection of the most beautiful tours and detours and discover France by bike.

In chateaux country in Centre-Val de Loire

Between Orléans and Tours, the Loire à Vélo is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in France. In the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, history has sown fairy-tale chateaux, enchanting parkland and remarkable gardens. Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois and Azay-le-Rideau, the gems come one after the other along the royal river. For charming diversions and day trips, we recommend the Châteaux à Vélo routes and circuits. And for something new, the small country roads and gentle curves of the Indre. Whether you are cycling through Châteauroux, the medieval fortress of Montbazon, the Royal City of Loches, the Chateau of Palluau-sur-Indre or the ponds of the Brenne, the Indre by Bike is full of little-known treasures.

The GT20 in Corsica

For you information, Corsica is an island but also a mountain in the sea. So if you want to cycle there, it's preferable to do so in spring or autumn to avoid the heat and opt for electric assistance. This will allow you to enjoy the panoramic views and the intoxicating smell of the maquis, without setting foot on land. Like the GR20, its famous hiking counterpart, the GT20 (for Grande Traversée), inaugurated in 2019, criss-crosses the island of beauty from north to south. From Bastia in Haute-Corse to the Bonifacio gorges, this 600km cycle route takes place in 12 stages, via the sumptuous Cap Corse. Villages overlooking the Mediterranean, refreshing mountain streams, dizzying passes and dreamy beaches, you'll definitely be amazed.

The Corsica Grande Traversée (GT20)

The vineyard route in Alsace

With 2,500km of cycle routes, 11 legendary passes, 15 regional circuits, 55 local circuits and 3 EuroVélo, Alsace is at the head of the pack for cycling trips. Strasbourg, the French capital of cycling, it's easy to go off on a tangent, from pretty flowery villages to farm inns, from abbeys to gourmet cellars. If you had to choose just one route, it should be the Véloroute du Vignoble d'Alsace from Marlenheim to Thann. Traced in parallel with the famous Wine Route which celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2023, it winds its way along 143km, taking old railway lines, parts of the ancient Roman road and paths through the vineyards without hurrying. The Kaysenberg Valley cycle route comes a close second.

From bays to capes in Northern France

A dozen lighthouses, fortified sites, six UNESCO-listed belfries, charming Belle-Époque seaside resorts and from Le Touquet to Malo-les-Bains, the Velomaritime in the Hauts-de-France region, over 190km between Mers-Les-Bains and Dunkirk, will have you pedalling with enthusiasm. We love all the sections - but especially the one in the Baie de Somme with its beautiful views. Or to the north of Boulogne-sur-Mer, the site of the two Capes, Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez, where you can ride at gull height and admire the beaches below. Another route goes between Arras and Amiens, on the Véloroute de la Mémoire. On this 90km route, which can be extended along the towpaths of the Somme Valley cycle route, you will come across the moving remains and memories of the First World War.

On the flax route in Normandy

Cycling from Paris along the Seine Valley is a way to discover Normandy as far as Le Havre and the famous beaches of Deauville. On the way, the Seine à Vélo cycle route invites you to discover Giverny, the birthplace of Impressionism, or the famous Château Gaillard. There is also Rouen and the luminous Jumièges Abbey before Honfleur and the green meadows of the Auge region. Are you looking for a sweet alternative? In June, when the flowers are in bloom, pedal in an ocean of blue on the Véloroute du Lin, 7km or so of greenways that wind through the hinterland of the Côte d'Albâtre, from the small resort of Pourville-sur-Mer to the cliffs of Fécamp.

Between vineyards and the ocean in Nouvelle Aquitaine

Bordeaux and its Cité du Vin, the Entre-deux-Mers, the Bassin d'Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat, the Atlantic beaches and the Gironde estuary, the fishing villages and small oyster ports, the Landes de Gascogne with their fragrant forests of maritime pines and, of course, the vineyards and great châteaux of the Médoc. This is an ideal environment for a cycling trip in Nouvelle Aquitaine. The Tour de Gironde à Vélo, 480km, is divided into peaceful stages according to your own pace, taking in part of the route of the Canal des Deux Mers. Meanwhile the Vélodyssée is an invigorating cycle route which crosses Brittany and then follows the Atlantic to the Basque coast. Saddle up!

Along the Canal du Midi in Occitanie

Cycling from Toulouse to the Mediterranean, via the proud city of Carcassonne, following the Canal du Midi in the shade of great plane trees, is one of the holy grails of cycling in Occitanie. The last few kilometres to Sète on the exceptional Lido greenway will leave you suspended between land and sea. You'll just have to get back on your feet to choose the swimming beach. Prefer to get some height? Passa Païs, the greenway of the Haut-Languedoc, on the mountainside, straddling the watershed, is a must. From the foothills of the Montagne Noire to the Massif du Caroux, via charming villages and a succession of bridges and tunnels of the old railway line, the pedalling has a lovely southern accent.

Estuary artworks in Pays de la Loire

Between the Atlantic coast and the Loire Valley, Pays de la Loire will blow you away. Here, the Loire à Vélo ends its long journey from Nevers in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. After Angers, the last section, which leads from Nantes to Saint-Brévin-les-Pins after the large bridge in Saint-Nazaire, is especially beautiful. And art is also on the agenda, as you can admire installations created by the Voyage à Nantes for 60km along the estuary. Any other good ideas? We recommend the Loire Valley, a well-kept secret halfway between Le Mans, Angers and Tours. And then of course, invigorating cycling trips to the Vendée islands: to Noirmoutier, from marshes to mills, or to the island of Yeu, between dunes and enchanting creeks.

From the Luberon to the Baie des Anges in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The most courageous will include the Tour du Mont-Ventoux on their list, a giant of Provence which can be admired from all sides as you spin along small roads lined with garrigue and lavender. Try the Calavon greenway, on the Mediterranean bike route. You will enjoy riding along the small roads of the Luberon to discover the hilltop villages and electric assistance is obviously a good option. To have the Mediterranean at your feet, there's nothing better than the Littorale. Between Cannes and Nice or the other way round, this cycle path along the Baie des Anges and the Promenade des Anglais allows you to admire the most famous seafront in France. The Côte d'Azur is beautiful!
