Testimonials

Tour Atlantic starts in Halifax

Riders for Tour Atlantic meet in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We encourage participants to arrive a few days early to explore this historic port city. There will be an afternoon orientation session before the first riding day.

Leaving Halifax we travel along Nova Scotia's south shore through Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg, a World Heritage Site and home port to the Bluenose II. The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove is a Canadian icon and the Bluenose is the famous sailing ship that's the image on Canada's 10-cent coin. From Lunenburg we cross through central Nova Scotia to the Annapolis Valley and a district immortalized by Ernest Buckler in The Mountain and The Valley, a landmark Canadian novel.

We head overland to the Annapolis Valley

Our route goes through Annapolis Royal, once a French garrison town and later a British garrison during the colonial era of European settlements in North America. That naval port atmosphere is still there today in this historic village.

Ferry to New Brunswick

We take the ferry from Digby across the Bay of Fundy to Saint John, where our route crosses a bridge over the reversing falls created by the Fundy Basin's world record tides.

Heading east after our rest/ferry day, we go through Fundy National Park and visit the Hopewell Rocks, unique formations created by tidal erosion that also are known as the Flowerpot Rocks. We travel through Moncton and go past the Big Lobster in Shediac on the way to to Prince Edward Island.

Crossing over to Prince Edward Island

Our ride leads to the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island, the birthplace of Canadian Confederation. On the ride to Charlottetown there is a side trip to the birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose Anne of Green Gables has become an enduring symbol of the Canadian spirit. We have a rest day in Charlottetown and time to visit the place where the Fathers of Confederation gathered to create the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. You could also stop by Cows, perhaps Canada's best known ice cream shop.

On to Cape Breton

We leave P.E.I. by ferry, returning to Nova Scotia and then cross the causeway onto Cape Breton, famous for its Celtic music, its hospitality and its scenery. You will see the scenery at its most spectacular from lookoffs along the Cabot Trail. We do a clockwise loop on the trail to reach Baddeck, where Alexander Graham Bell's summer home is now a museum and where Canada's first airplane, the Silver Dart, had its maiden flight a century ago. We'll have a celebration dinner in Baddeck before our final riding day to Sydney.

Going by Bicycle

Our Route Itineraries now include elevation charts, so you can see how hilly a segment is, and plan your rest stops appropriately. The Canadian Cycling Association has a great book about touring by bike (Elliott Katz, 1994), though for a variety of reasons, they take significant detours off the Trans-Canada.

There are a couple of stretches that are high traffic divided highway were cyclists are not allowed: Highway 1 in BC’s lower mainland between Lion’s Bay and Hope, Highway 417 in and around Ottawa, along highways 400 and 401 to/from Toronto, and Quebec’s highways 20 & 40 from Ontario through to Quebec City.

Cycling Route Detours

Because the Tran-Canada is relatively high traffic, there are some adjustments recommended to the route, especially if cycling alone, without a “chase” or “pack” vehicle. May cross-Canada cycling treks have such a vehicle for logistical reasons.

  • In BC’s Lower Mainland, bicycles are not permitted on Highway 1 , since it is classified as divided highways, and cyclists should travel on Route 7 on the north shore of the Fraser. This route takes riders from Coquitlam to Mission to Hope .
  • From Hope , the CCA recommends following The Crowsnest Highway #3 though Manning Park and along the south edge of the Okanagan east to Castlegar and then scoot north on Highway #6 to Revelstoke ,
  • BC Goverment restrictions on Cyclists in a nutshell: Stay off the #1 between Horseshoe Bay and Hope (we’ve mapped the detours)
  • In Western Alberta, from Canmore , take Highway 1A, which takes a leisurely and very path along the north bank of the Bow River past Mount Yamnuska, Morley , and Ghost Lake into Calgary (with only one big hill east of Cochrane), into Calgary . From Cochrane , you can take the cycling path through the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park… the pathway roughly follows the railway tracks and is missing a 1km segment just at city limits, but you can walk (pay attention!) along the railway right of way to the City of Calgary pathway inside the city limits which you can follow along the Bow River and then along the Western Irrigation District canal to Lake Chestermere east of the city, which lies right on the Trans Canada Highway.
  • At Strathmore , east of Calgary, CCA recommends heading north, then east on highway #9, which takes you through Drumheller (Scenic, historical, but with hills), and then east across the flat Alberta prairie past Oyen to Alsask on the border.
  • In western Saskatchewan, #9 turns into #44, which connects to 342, which connects to #4 to Swift Current , back on the Trans-Canada
  • In Manitoba, most of the Trans-Canada is avoided, by taking #83 north to Minota, #24 east to Rapid City, #10 north to Minedoa, and #16 east to Portage La Prairie , From there, take #26 which detours north through Poplar Point, ending up on the western outskirts of Winnipeg .
  • East of Winnipeg head along #15 east to Elma and then #44 through Whiteshell Provincial Park past Falcon Lake , finally hitting the Trans-Canada at the Ontario border
  • From Kenora , take #71 south to Fort Frances on the Minnesota USA border, only to head south and then east along the well-settled south shore of Lake Superior to Sault Ste Marie . This avoids a very remote road, with narrow shoulders and heavy truck traffic, as well as a stretch with lots of carnivorous wildlife (like bears) which can make roadside camping awkward.
  • From Espanola , a bit west of Sudbury, head south via Manitoulin Island , taking the ferry from Baymouth to Tobermory , and down the Bruce Peninsula to Owen Sound , and then east on country roads through Orillia , Bancroft and Renfrew in the lush Ottawa River Valley.
  • From Renfrew head along #3 and then #5 alongside the River, avoiding the very heavily trafficked 417 divided highway into Ottawa . In Ottawa follow the Sir John A Macdonald Ottawa River Parkway into the city.
  • East of Ottawa take the old highway #17, again avoiding the 417 divided highway, and crossing into Quebec over the Ottawa River at Hawkesbury to Grenville, and then follow scenic #344 along he Ottawa River southeast into Montreal , via Oka.
  • Ontario rules for bikes and e-bikes In a nutshell: Stay off any “400 series” highway, the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Queensway in Ottawa, or the Kitchener-Waterloo Expressway.
  • East of Montreal head along the south shore of the St Lawrence along#132 all the way to Levis, across the river from Quebec City. This avoids the busy AutoRoute #20 on the south shore and the #40 on the north shore. A very wise move, considering the reputation of that province’s drivers.
  • From Levis , take #132 east along the south bank to Riviere du Loup , where you connect to #185, the Trans-Canada into New Brunswick.
  • From Grand Falls , New Brunswick, take route #105 down the east bank of the might Saint John River, instead of the busy #2 Trans-Canada Route. This will take you all the way to Fredericton .
  • From Sussex, NB , take #114 southeast along the Fundy Coast, and then up the Peticodiac River to Moncton . From Moncton, take #106 closer to the waterway than the #2 highway, into Sackville on the Nova Scotia border.
  • Instead of crossing western Nova Scotia, they recommend taking the scenic route through PEI, taking the ferry from Woods Islands to Caribou .
  • From Caribou, take #245 and #337 along the Northumberland Strait to Antigonish , and country road #4 instead of the busy Trans-Canada #104, crossing the Canso Causeway at Ault Cove, from which point there is only one road through Cape Breton .
  • Through Newfoundland, there is only one route. No detours are possible.

Item 9 is not a possibility for those precluded from entering the United States, who have a criminal record (in some cases even an arrest record), or who did not apply for a Visitors Visa in advance (this applies to citizens of countries other than Canada, and some Canadian citizens who were born in certain other countries – their rules, not ours!)

Ontario & Alberta require bicycle helmets for riders under 18 years. Other provinces have all-ages legislation requiring bike helmets behind New Brunswick (1995), British Columbia (1996), Nova Scotia (1997) and Prince Edward Island (2002). Both BC and Nova Scotia helmet legislation also includes inline skates and scooters.

E-bikes are generally treated the same as un-motorized bicycles, and have a maximum speed of 30 km/h. See detailed e-bike discussion by Fight Your Tickets.

Kettle Valley Rail Trail — In the late 1800s and early part of the 20th century, the Kettle Valley Railway played an important role in getting people — and goods — from Hope to Castlegar, through interior British Columbia. But by 1964, things and changed and these days, the once-abandoned tracks are an incredible 650-km hiking and biking trail that cuts through some of Western Canada’s best wine regions and scenic areas. It’s the longest trail in British Columbia, (Stop at the Kettle Valley Museum at mile zero if you want to learn more about the region’s train history.)

Golden Triangle — Every year, on the May long weekend, the Elbow Valley Cycling Club leads a very popular cycling tour through the Rocky Mountains, forming a triangle that starts at Castle Mountain and loops through Golden and Radium, British Columbia. Next year, 2020, will mark the 37th annual event. (When you’re in Golden, stop at the lovely Eleven22 restaurant for a relaxing, delicious dinner.)

You don’t have to be part of the club to participate, but it’s definitely worth going with someone that’s biked it before and knows the ins and outs, and it’s not a great trail for young kids because traffic can be incredibly heavy. Some people tent along the way; we’ve always stayed in inexpensive motels and had one designated driver who packs extra gear, a first-aid kit, food and water.

Kootenai Brown Trail — Head to Waterton National Park in Southern Alberta to experience the Kootenai Brown Trail, just one of the myriad trails found in and around the park. A 15.6-kilometre multi-use trail (meaning you can hike or run on it, too), it’s easy and beautiful, with great views of the lakes and mountains. It’s a good choice for families with younger kids, as it’s only 6.9 km one way. Dogs are allowed, too, but must be kept on leashes.

Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail — Drive from Calgary to Banff, and you’ll notice cyclists zooming happily along a paved trail that follows the highway from Canmore to Banff. They’re on the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail, a beautiful 22-kilometre trail that starts across from the Travel Alberta Visitor Information Centre on Bow Valley Trail in Canmore. Park free in Canmore and then bike to and from Banff; or use ROAM Transit to get a ride back to town. (Note that ROAM typically only has room for up to six bikes per ride.)

The Jasper Discovery Trail — If you only have limited time in Jasper National Park, but you want to do something outdoorsy and fun, check out the Jasper Discovery Trail. This 8.3 multi-use trail literally encircles the town of Jasper and you can start it pretty much anywhere. The path also connects to other trails, if you want to push yourself further. Fuel yourself with coffee at the Bear’s Paw Bakery , and if you still have energy, don’t miss Maligne Canyon, the deepest canyon in the Rocky Mountains. Then finish your day with a hearty smoked meat platter and local beer at the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen . You will have earned every bite.

Inclusions & Equipment

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours may visit remote areas where facilities are often basic. Some of these trips involve camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will sometimes involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, or paddling for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. Hikes are mainly on well-defined trails with undulating terrain and cycling is on mostly flat surfaces.

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with some moderate components. Hiking trips typically require carrying a daypack only, but could involve carrying a pack of up to 20 pounds (9kg), depending on personal gear.

These adventures involve trekking, cycling, or paddling for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. Many moderately graded hiking trips involve the carrying of a daypack only, though some may involve carrying a backpack of up to 30 pounds (14kg), depending on personal gear. Hikers should be prepared for plenty of roots, rocks, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and potential variable weather conditions. Cyclists should be prepared for undulating terrain and some steep hills.

Moderate to Challenging

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with some challenging components. Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

Challenging

These adventures involve trekking, cycling or paddling in remote areas in variable weather conditions for up to 8 to 10 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up to 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures, we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for 3 months leading up to your trip.

On these adventures you will need a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week from a minimum of 3 months leading up to your trip. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a 15lb daypack is highly recommended at least once per week.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a full day pack is strongly recommended at least once per week (or a 30lb pack for backpacking trips).

These trips require an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, four to five times per week for three to six months leading up to departure. Hill walking with a full pack in variable weather conditions or on/off road cycling is essential.

On these adventures, you will need to be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions, have an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

Cycling in Canada – Practical tips for bike touring in Canada

Useful tips and advice for cycling in Canada based on my experiences bike touring through the Canada on my way from Alaska to Argentina.

Cycling across the border between Alaska and Canada

Bike Touring in Canada

I last cycled through Canada back in 2009 as part of my bike tour from Alaska to Argentina . Canada is one of those countries that I had always wanted to visit, and is now one that I want to return to and see again.

Wide open spaces, mountains, friendly people – You get the picture. It's an ideal destination for bike touring!

It did have it's challenges as well of course, which you can read about by going through to my blog entries at the bottom of this page.

My fondest memories are of working on a farm for a couple of days, seeing bears in the wild, and meeting up with other cyclists.

The downside was the rain. If you think it rains a lot in England, try cycling through Canada!

Guide to Cycling in Canada

Obviously it goes without saying that Canada is a big country ! I didn't get to cycle everywhere, and so my thoughts and observations come only from the section that I cycled.

Unlike many people, I didn't cycle Canada coast to coast. Instead, I cycled from the North of Canada to the South. Basically, from the border of Alaska to the border with the rest of the USA.

You can check out the route in the linked posts below. I've put together a few summaries that you might find useful if you are planning to go bike touring in Canada.

When to cycle across Canada

The best time of year to cycle across Canada, would be the summer. Specific months that most people would agree are ideal for bike touring in Canada are June and September.

Of course, you can cycle all year around in Canada. The winter would have its challenges though!

Where to stay when bike cycling across Canada

Canadians are known as friendly folk, so it's not much of a surprise that there are great opportunities for Warmshowers and couchsurfing when cycling across Canada.

There's also plenty of campgrounds, whether in national parks, forest parks or official campsites. Canada is also ideal for wild camping , and obviously there are always hotels, motels and hostels around.

I stayed with Warmshowers hosts April and Lee when bike touring in Canada

Food and drink

There's not much issue with picking up food and drink for bike touring in Canada. In the more remote parts though, it might pay to plan ahead when cycling in more remote areas.

Unless you go way, way off the beaten path, you should never be more than a couple of days away from somewhere to pick up supplies. You might want to consider taking a water filter so you can always top up from streams and rivers.

Here's a water filter for travel I currently carry on my bike tours.

Bicycle stuff

Outside of main population areas, you might struggle to find bike shops. When you do get to bigger towns and cities though, you will have a first class pick of spares for your bike.

Roads and traffic

I didn't find the traffic in Canada to be particularly problematic when crossing Canada by bicycle. There's a varied road network with some rough tracks. Where the sealed road network starts its generally of good quality.

What I did notice though, was the Canadians seem to love a high percentage on their inclines going up and down mountains!

Now that's a steep road! Bike touring in Canada on the road between Cottonwood and Pemberton

Dangers and annoyances

No real dangers or annoyances to speak of apart from bears. Personally, I never had any major issues with bears on the routes I took. When camping at night, I kept food away from the tent, and also cooked away from the tent if I though I was in ‘bear country'.

The course isn’t just for the climbers though as with a prologue and a mid-race time trial many TT specialists are on the start sheet too including Josh Tarling and Ethan Hayter from (INEOS Grenadiers) and Rémi Cavagna (Movistar Team).

After the very short prologue normality returned on stage one with the riders facing the 165.7km from Château d’Oex to Fribourg. For a while it looked like the day's early break would succeed but it was consumed by the peloton with around 20km left.

After a chaotic sprint the win was taken by Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) with his team mate Andrea Vendrame on his wheel to make it a 1-2 for the team which is having an exceptional year.

Tour de Romandie 2024 stages

The race starts with a very short 2.3km prologue which will be contested by the overall favorites, keen to install a pecking order early on, and the short TT specialists looking for a chance to gain a leaders jersey in a big stage race.

Stage one follows the next day and it’s a lumpy 165.7km from Château d’Oex to Fribourg which will likely end in a sprint finish, although there are very view big name sprinters on the start sheet.

Stage two is where the GC action will really kick off with two huge mountains and a summit finish at Salvan/Les Marécottes. This 10km final ascent, averaging 7.3%, has slopes maxing out at 14% so will be a proper test for the climbers.

Those same climbers will the next day have to take on the 15.5km continuously undulating time trial around Oron and utilise another skill needed to win a stage race.

Stage four from Saillon to Leysin is 151.7km and takes the riders into higher territory with five classified climbs including the 10km summit finish at the end.

After this the GC battle should be stitched up with just the laps around Vernier to contend with on the final stage which will likely end in a sprint.

Ottawa to host Ironman Triathlon in 2025

The city of Ottawa will be hosting the Ironman Canada Triathlon in 2025.

It will be the first full-distance Ironman event to be held in Ottawa. The event is scheduled to take place Aug. 3, 2025.

  • Sign up now for daily CTV News Ottawa newsletters
  • The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

"We are thrilled to announce this new partnership with Ottawa and bring Ironman Canada-Ottawa, one of our most historic race franchises, to the Canadian capital," said Ironman VP of North American operations Keats McGonigal in a news release. "Ottawa offers the quintessential Canadian race environment with a plethora of outdoor activities, great weather and a mosaic of culture all nestled at the very seat of government. Ironman Canada has played a prominent role in the history of Ironman and will continue with the expansion to Ottawa. We are enthusiastic and excited to see what futures hold here in Ottawa, Ontario."

The triathlon will begin at Britannia Beach, with a 3.8-kilometre two-loop swim in the Ottawa River.

bike trips in canada

From there, the 180-km bike portion will run along NCC and city roads, including the Kichi Zibi Mikan, the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, Laurier Avenue, Nicholas Street, Sussex Drive, and the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway. Roads will be closed to traffic for the event.

"One of the really unique selling points for this race in particular is it's highly urban," said Ironman regional director Dave Christen. "To be able to race in front of Parliament like we are, to be able to finish eventually in front of Parliament as well, to pass through the city streets of this great capital city."

Finally, the marathon run will begin at Parliament Hill, run along Wellington Street before looping to head south on Colonel By Drive alongside the Rideau Canal to Hog's Back and then back up the Queen Elizabeth Driveway to Parliament Hill.

"I am thrilled to welcome the Ironman Canada competition to Ottawa," said Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. "I love this city and so will you. There are so many triathletes in Ottawa. And it's an absolutely stunning and beautiful place to swim, bike and run. It's also the perfect location for outdoor adventures and world class events, especially an event as prestigious as Ironman Canada. Ottawa is a great place for this amazing competition. Everyone from athletes to families, friends and fans will have an amazing race experience here. I look forward to seeing everyone here in August 2025."

Sutcliffe told CTV News he does not intend to compete in the Ottawa Ironman. While he's an avid marathon runner, who will be running the London Marathon during a trade mission abroad, he said his mayoral responsibilities prevent him from training for this triathlon.

"I would love to, if I could, but training for an Ironman is a completely different level of training than training for a marathon and I don't have that kind of time unfortunately, so I'll be there cheering people on," he said.

General registration opens April 22 on the Ironman website.  The Ironman Canada-Ottawa triathlon, part of the VinFast Ironman North America Series, will offer qualifying slots to the 2026 VinFast Ironman World Championship.

Rick Hellard, who has competed in Ironman events, says it takes a lot of effort to prepare.

"The actual race day isn't that bad," Hellard said. "It's the getting ready for it, all the preparation, because it takes years to get there and it's being consistent with the training."

The event is also expected to provide a major tourism boost for the city, bringing top athletes and their families to the capital.

"This event showcases the resilience and determination of athletes from far and wide, leaving a legacy of excellence in our city," said Ottawa Tourism president and CEO Michael Crockatt. "We're confident about this partnership and believe this will significantly contribute to our local economy, grow our sports tourism market, inspire our community, and further showcase our ability to host world-class events. Ottawa's scenic landscapes and vibrant communities are ready to welcome participants and spectators alike for an unforgettable experience."
