bon - journey since 2006

The  first and original Award winning tribute to Bon Jovi and Journey

ACCEPT NO IMITATIONS!

Formed in the spring of 2006 in Pittsburgh PA. Bon Journey was the first band of it's kind.  Paying tribute to two of the biggest arena rock acts in history, Bon Jovi and Journey.  They bring you the music of these two giant Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted bands. The band quickly became a staple in the local music scene winning awards in 2006, 2007 and again in 2020. They then began playing nationally hitting city after city. Often imitated by other bands even claiming to be them, though flattering, a bit confusing. It seems every city they played, a band copied them or wanted to be them. They are the first and original Bon Journey  and the only comprised of original members and from the first song they play, there is a difference. Essentially there are 4 lead singers in one band which makes Bon Journey a Vocal powerhouse that separates them from most other acts! Not only with the incredible talents of lead singer Gary Bickerstaff, who has the range and soul of Steve Perry with the stage swagger of Jon Bon Jovi, but the high harmony and searing guitar of Dan Newman, the tight bottom end and vocal of bassist Rob Shine, the smooth voice of keyboardist Matt Friday and the bombast of an amazing drummer in Justin Walker.  The band delivers a show like no other and fans come in droves and never walk away disappointed!

Bon Journey, class reunion and variety of activities highlight Shanksville Picnic

bon journey nesconset

SHANKSVILLE ― The Shanksville Community Picnic is back in 2023 with two days of celebration Aug. 4-5.

The picnic this year will include a Friday evening Main Street parade, free concerts in the bandstand, food, games, raffles, children’s activities, and, special this year, a reunion of Shanksville-Stonycreek alumni, especially for the classes of 1960-70.

The Shanksville Community Picnic, 1291 Cornerstone Road, is sponsored by the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department as a major fundraiser for the group. The money raised helps the department pay for operating expenses, equipment updates, training and putting the final touches on a major addition to the fire station.

Schedule of activities

Friday’s activities kick off with the opening of the grove kitchen and games at 4 p.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fresh-cut french fries, popcorn chicken and cold drinks will be available throughout the evening. Parade units will line up on the west end of town beginning at 5 p.m., and step off down Main Street at 6 p.m., ending at the Community Grove adjacent to the Shanksville-Stonycreek School. Mounted units, antique and classic cars, tractors, fire and emergency vehicles, marching groups, floats, mascots, royalty, and elected officials have all been invited to participate.

Friday evening’s feature concert is the nationally known tribute band, Bon Journey, playing hits made famous by Bon Jovi and Journey, as well as other popular bands from the 1970s and '80s. The band will perform from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket for seating.

Aug. 5 will be a full day of events beginning at 11 a.m. with games, food, music and tournaments, and ending with a free concert from 7-10 p.m. by the 1970s and '80s classic rock cover band Dimwit. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this concert as well.

In addition, there will be music from the popular acoustic duo, Partners in Crime featuring Shanksville graduate Gary Miller (class of 1973), from 2-4 p.m., and music from DJ Kool Rock from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m.

Other highlights of the picnic include a huge basket raffle, a gun raffle, games of skill and chance operating throughout the day, a corn hole tournament and a horseshoe pitching contest, both with cash prizes.

The menu for Saturday’s festivities includes barbecued chicken, popcorn chicken, burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, creamy coleslaw, mac and cheese, fresh-cut french fries, a wide variety of pies sold by the slice, hand-dipped ice cream and cold drinks.

Tournaments

Jim Gottschalk of Stoystown coordinates the corn hole tournament and Russ Stern of Pleasant Hill directs the horseshoe pitching contest. Details about how to register for the tournaments can be found on the fire department's Facebook page: facebook.com/SVFD627/

The corn hole tournament will be held Aug. 5, at the Shanksville Community Grove tennis courts, by the school. Registration starts at noon. It will close at 12:45 p.m. Bags fly at 1 p.m. There will be some loaner bags available or bring your own. Walk-on teams are welcome.

The tournament will start with a round-robin which guarantees six games for the teams, to separate the competitive teams from the social teams, Gottschalk said. After the round-robin, teams will compete in double elimination. Fifty percent of the entry fees will be distributed as prizes with 75% of the prize money divided among the top three competitive players and 25% among the top three social players.

There will also be an airmail competition in which a box will be set 30 feet away. Participants will have the chance to toss four bags to advance to the next round. The only person left standing will receive 50% of the pot, Gottschalk said. Preregister by calling Jim Gottschalk at 814-442-6782.

The horseshoe tournament will also be held Saturday at the Community Grove. Registration begins at noon. Shoes fly at 1 p.m. No entry fee. Cash prizes are sponsored by Stonycreek Builders Supply Inc.

Children activities

Especially for the children, there will be an opportunity to get up close with a fire truck and use a real fire hose, jump in the inflatable race, and play the dime toss, duck pond, mechanical pig race, and other games. At 12:30 p.m. there will be a visit from the Med Star helicopter, schedule permitting.

Class reunion

The department is cooperating with alumni groups from Shanksville-Stonycreek High School to provide the venue for “The Great Reunion.” Dian (Wilson) Spagnola, Shippensburg, from the class of 1968, and her team have been working for months to invite all graduates, especially those from the years 1960 to 1970, to gather at the picnic on Saturday. Spagnola’s father, the late Harry Wilson, was a charter member of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department, the president from 1953-1957, and in 1962, and 1965, and a great booster of the Community Picnic.

"Growing up in small-town America, everybody knows everybody," Spagnola said. "My parents were involved in that picnic."

She said her mother was known for making baked beans and her grandmother made cakes and pies.

"It was a part of my life, a part of growing up. A small thing it was but it was a time to pull everything together," Spagnola said.

She gives classmate Tom Long credit for "igniting the flame under" her to get this plan in motion.

"My sister (Cheryl Fritz) and I were talking about wanting to see friends from school. Then I got a call from Tom Long. He said his brother had died, and he said he feels the need to get in touch with people who touched his life," she said. "He said 'I just want to know what you're doing and how your life is going.' We talked for 45 minutes and it was such a blessing to me."

Spagnola said she talked to Donna and Karl Glessner, members of the Shanksville Community Picnic committee, and came up with a plan.

"We have no idea how it's going to turn out," she said. "I haven't been to the picnic in 35 years. But we're excited. With the world collapsing and families collapsing, we are truly blessed to have families grow up in Shanksville."

Spagnola said her sister said whatever turnout they have this year will be a building block for next year's reunion event.

"So I guess we're going to keep doing it," she laughed. "I don't know that there's anything I've been this excited about for a long time."

The fire department is happy to welcome this new event to the annual picnic.

“We are excited to welcome these alumni to the picnic,” said fire department President Brad Shober. “It’s been a pleasure to work with Dian and her team to help get the word out, and make a place for folks to gather with their classmates.”

In addition, the Class of 1973 will celebrate its 50th-year reunion at the picnic this year. Alumni should bring lawn chairs. Look for the special banner welcoming graduates of SSJHS.

The Shanksville Community Picnic has been a town tradition since 1930 when a crowd of 3,000 attended the first such event, then sponsored by the Stonycreek Valley Community Association. It was billed as “A good time in the scenes of our youth.”

“The Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department has been sponsoring the picnic for the past 70 years,” said Shober. “The Scouts, 4-H, our churches and businesses, the ladies who organize the basket raffle, and lots of other volunteers have helped produce this year’s parade and picnic, and we couldn’t do it without them. Shanksville is a small town, but there is room for everyone at the Shanksville Picnic.”

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

History of Moscow

  • General Information

History of Moscow

Moscow has seen its fair share of history, from invasions to revolutions : these days it is home to a wealth of culture and is one of the most populated capitals in the world.

The name of the Russian city comes from the river that courses through it, the  Moskva . While the exact date of the founding of the metropolis is unknown, it was first mentioned by name in 1147 , and was a convenient meeting place well accessed by rivers and roads.

Medieval Moscow

This small trading post grew and was fortified over the next few centuries, with churches and monasteries being built. However, the 13th century saw a Mongol invasion burning the city to the ground and killing all who lived there, with Moscow becoming a Grand Duchy within the Mongol Empire. The city prospered and would eventually lead a united Russian army in victory over the Mongols , ending up as capital city by the end of the 15th century.

During the 16th to 17th centuries under the Tsardom of Russia , Moscow's population grew rapidly, and many of the monuments emblematic of the city were constructed, from  Novodevichy Convent  to Saint Basil's Cathedral  and the Kremlin . Despite its growth, it suffered  famine, plagues, attacks by the Crimean Tatars and destructive fires - unsurprising considering much of the city was built of wood.

Under the Russian Empire

When  Peter the Great  founded the Russian Empire in 1712 and made Saint Petersburg its capital, Moscow was suddenly relegated to second place and population quickly declined. However, over the ensuing century, the city's infrastructure was built up and connections to the capital were created. When  Napoleon invaded in 1812 , Moscow's inhabitants were evacuated, but not before allegedly setting fire to the city to sabotage the French forces. The city's destruction was claimed as a great success by the Muscovites, and it was quickly rebuilt afterwards: Moscow State University was founded, the Bolshoi Theatre was built, and any number of monuments celebrating the city's victory were put up.

Throughout this time, Moscow was also experiencing a population boom, with a massive influx of peasants moving to the metropolis from rural farms in search of work. In stark contrast to the lavish architecture being built, the city was also filled with poverty-stricken slums, and increasing discontent lead to revolution .

Bolshevik Revolution & Soviet Russia

Mass political and social unrest instigated an attempted revolution in 1905, but it wasn't until 1917 that the movement really took hold of Russia. That year saw the February and October Revolutions , followed by a Civil War  which ended with the  monarchy being abolished , the royal family being executed, and the  Soviet Union being established  by the socialist political party known as the  Bolsheviks . In 1922, the Communist government made  Moscow capital again .

The Russian Army was victorious in defending the city from German offensives in the Battle of Moscow during World War II , and the Soviet leadership left its mark on the capital  over the next five decades. Improved roads, bus, train and metro networks modernised Moscow; high-rise apartments provided a solution to serious housing crisis, and atheist ideology saw the destruction or conversion of over half of the country's churches. Remnants of the Soviet state can still be seen today across much of the city, for example in the statues and artwork throughout the Moscow Metro .

In 1980, Moscow hosted the Summer Olympic Games , an event which was boycotted by the United States and over 60 other countries because of the Soviet-Afghan War. While this increased the Cold War tensions that gripped the two superpowers, there was no denying that Russia was liberalising under leader Mickhail Gorbachev's "perestroika" reforms.

Moscow since 1991

1991 saw the Soviet Union being dissolved, with Moscow remaining capital of the Russian Federation . Enormous population growth since the 1990s means it is now the largest city on the European continent, with over 13 million people living within the city limits alone. Political, economic and social changes have "Westernised" Moscow, which can be seen in the presence of international chains in the city and in the restoration of churches demolished under Stalin, like the  Cathedral of Christ the Saviour .

Intrigued? Our guided walking tours of Soviet Moscow , Communist Moscow and Cold War Bunker 42 will immerse you in the city's fascinating history.
