11 tips to see and do in C’an Picafort, Mallorca

On the north coast of Mallorca, you will find the popular seaside resort of C’an Picafort. At an hour’s drive from the airport, you’ll encounter beautiful beaches and many tourists. You can easily discover the island’s north from this coastal town, but there is plenty of entertainment in C’an Picafort itself too. With these 11 tips, you will have a wonderful holiday in C’an Picafort or a packed day trip!

C’an Picafort: typical holiday resort

C’an Picafort in Mallorca is a typical holiday destination. Out of season (when I’m there), it’s a deserted holiday resort. If you’ve read my blogs before, you know that I’m not a big fan of these places. I don’t like those massive, dime-a-dozen beach towns. Of course, it doesn’t help that most shops and restaurants are closed, because I can imagine a lovely afternoon in C’an Picafort enjoying the beach and bars.

C’an Picafort is a perfect place for a sunny getaway, as you have everything you need within walking distance. Shops, restaurants, nightlife, beach… And there is also plenty to do in the former fishing village. You can easily spend a week here if you are looking for a lazy beach holiday, but you can also visit C’an Picafort for a day if you are exploring the island.

Tip 1 – Go to the beach in C’an Picafort

It’s a rather obvious tip, I know. But the beach of C’an Picafort is gorgeous. It is about 1.5 kilometers long and quite wide. It is full of loungers and umbrellas in the summer, and because the water is pretty calm here, families like to come here. In the high season, lifeguards are present so that you can enjoy a carefree beach day.

If you continue the beach all the way south, you will come to the Na Patana dog beach . The first part is still dog-free, but your dog is welcome in the next part. It is not the most beautiful stretch of beach in C’an Picafort, but you are in the middle of wild nature, with only a few people. It is not a beach to spend hours on, but you can take a nice walk in the area, with and without a dog.

Tip 2 – Stroll along the boulevard of C’an Picafort

Along the long beach of C’an Picafort is an equally long promenade. Endless shops and terraces to choose from. Order a sangria and some tapas and enjoy the view (and people-watching, of course). The place is nearly extinct in the fall and winter.

Tip 3 – Spot graffiti in C’an Picafort

Take a good look around you when you walk through C’an Picafort because you will find graffiti in a few places. Sometimes a small image, but also giant murals. Most are realistic depictions of beach goers painted on drab apartment complexes.

Tip 4 – Visit the market of C’an Picafort

Every Friday, there is a market in C’an Picafort, between 9 am and 2 pm. You will find a combination of food, clothing, and gifts. If you would like to visit just one market during your time in Mallorca, I recommend the market in Sineu . It’s on Wednesday.

Tip 5 – Shopping in C’an Picafort

There are more than enough souvenir shops in C’an Picafort. Fortunately, in the shopping street Passeig Colón you will also find charming boutiques and well-known shops such as Mango and Esprit.

Tip 6 – Racing on the kart track

Karting C’an Picafort is a bit outside of the center. Children from 6 years old are already allowed to race a lap on the track. They drive the track at 25 km/h, adults can go karting up to 90 km/h! At Karting C’an Picafort, there are even karts that you can ride in pairs.

Tip 7 – Images of Joan Bennàsar

The Mallorcan artist Joan Bennàsar has been allowed to place a few groups of statues along the beach and the promenade of C’an Picafort. You can hardly miss the figures because they are pretty large.

These are the precise locations of El Deseo , El Ritual , El Tesoro , and La Herida .

Tip 8 – For the daredevils: cliff jumping

This tip is not suitable for me at all, because: fear of heights. But if you are tougher than me, a cliff-jumping tour from C’an Picafort is very suitable for those looking for an adrenaline rush. You’ll set off with a guide who will make sure you jump off the cliffs safely, and luckily you’ll also be given a not-so-fashionable but very-safe helmet. So book your cliff jumping adventure here.

Tip 9 – Visit Necropolis Son Real near C’an Picafort

A necropolis is an old cemetery. And the necropolis of Son Real is beautifully situated by the sea. Now, you may not be super interested in the ruins, but the walk to it is supposed to be beautiful. And who knows, you might even encounter peacocks and turtles on the route. It’s free to visit. This is the Google Maps location .

Tip 10 – Find nature in the S’Albufera Natural Park

Since dogs are not allowed in the S’Albufera Natural Park, I skipped this tip. But I would have loved to visit this park near C’an Picafort. It is a varied area to explore, with many waterbirds. On the Komoot app , you will find several walking routes. Or rent a bike because there are decent cycle paths too.

Tip 11 – Rent a private boat, go fishing, or spot dolphins

If you’re a little jealous looking at the boats in the harbor of C’an Picafort, why not rent a boat yourself? Here you can rent one for half a day, including lunch. Or join a deep-sea fishing tour: it will keep you busy for a whole day. Book the fishing and boat excursion .

Not far from C’an Picafort, you can also join a catamaran excursion to spot dolphins. You leave early in the morning to have the best chance of seeing dolphins. Book the tour.

Discover the natural area of son real.

In the part of Ca’n Picafort called Son Baulo, you will find the natural area of Son Real, an area of diversified nature and rich cultural heritage. The area is one of the most important in terms of telling the story of the Balearic islands and the human occupation of these. In the Son Real area, you can look forward to discover a flourishing wildlife of Balearic species, both animals and plants, as well as excavations of important prehistoric sites such as talayotic settlements and burial sites.

Ca’n Picafort is a great place to discover upcoming artistic talents and contemporary artworks. One of the most remarkable artworks has been constructed by Joan Bennàssar, 4 collections of sculptures of women located in the shallows along the beach. The sculptures represent desire, ritual, treasure and wound. Ca’n Picafort is also home to the art gallery of Marimón that aides to promote upcoming artists from the Balearic islands working with contemporary arts.

WALKING OR BICYCLING IN THE S’ALBUFERA WETLANDS

The wetlands of s’Albufera is the largest of its kind on the Balearic islands covering a surface of 1646,48 hectares. The area was declared protected as special natural heritage in 1998, and later special protection of birds. Ca’n picafort is located on the northern cope of Mallorca, in the wide and beautiful Alcudia bay, approx. 67 km from Palma airport.

Transfer time by car or taxi is about 45 minutes and will cost you about 80 euros (taxi).

The weekly market in Ca’n Picafort is held on Fridays. The market is a great opportunity to get a good bargain on clothes, electronics, shoes, accessories, purses, bags, jewelry, crafts, equipment etc. But that’s not all, there are many stands at the market offering sweet pastries, fresh juicy fruits, meats and sausages, cheeses and olives that you can sample and discover the taste of Mallorca.

The market starts around 8 o’clock and ends around 2.

Around the middle of August, Ou Lady of August is celebrated in Ca’n Picafort. Located at the end of the Balearic Island’s largest beach, Can Picafort is a beautiful resort dedicated to sensational beach life, amazing views, a modest nightlife as well as the the ultimate summer holiday experience.

What’s more, Can Picafort has been put on the map as an area which showcases local artists in stunning scenery.

The main reason visitors from around the world visit Can Picafort is for its beautiful fine white sandy beach with turquoise waters lapping the shores.

However, in this guide to Can Picafort, I must emphasise that the resort does not strictly have its own beach.

It’s part of the huge swathe of sand that stretches 11kms down to Alcudia Port.

This beach isn’t just the largest beach in Mallorca, but the largest beach in the Balearic Islands.

As such, booking a holiday to Can Picafort means always being able to find space on the sand, even if it does mean sometimes walking a little way to find it.

The waters here are clear, shallow and perfect for families, especially since they are lifeguarded during the summer months.

There are also plenty of sunbeds and beach umbrellas to rent too.

But just take care on a windy day with an offshore breeze.

If you are relaxing on an inflatable as you can easily blow out to sea!

2. Things to do in Can Picafort, Mallorca

The focus of resort life is on the beach here in Can Picafort is the beach. But this also means there are some great watersports and boat trips available to book.

As well as booking jet skis or boat charters, keen fishermen (or women) can also book a 7-hour fishing trip here .

And one of the most popular activities popular with any wildlife enthusiast is to book a place on a dolphin watching boat trip here, and see dolphins in their natural habitat here:

If you are visiting during cooler months, then rent a bike and head to the S’Albufera Nature Reserve. This is a great place to spot migrating birds and walk in nature.

Golf fans are also well catered for if there are six golf clubs in the Can Picafort area.

The most famous in the 18-hole golf couse at Alcanada Golf Club near Alcudia which boasts stunning views and one of the most incredible golfing coastal locations in Mallorca.

3. The Art Scene in Can Picafort

A guide to Can Picafort is not complete without highlighting its location as an artisitc centre.

Can Picafort is a living art gallery but you have to look up and look all around you as you wander around the resort for evidence of of some of best and most iconic artworks from island artists.

Look down the side streets and on the sides of building for examples of the most iconic street art on the island by painter Joan Aguilo .

You can see painting by Joan Aguilo all over the island, but in my opinion the largest concentration is here in Can Picafort.

You will also see the mermaids and other statues by sculpturist Joan Bennessar all along the Can Picafort sea front, stretching down to Son Baulo.

There is no inexpensive hotel accommodation during peak season 2022, and demand for hotel accommodation is expected to exceed pre-pandemic levels going into 2023.

5. Eating out in Can Picafort

Can Picafort attracts many different natationalities to the resort during the Summer months, particularly holidaymakers from Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and also Spain.

As such, you will find the menus in the restaurants translated into at least English, German and Spanish.

And there are so many restaurants to choose from, serving traditional paella, tapas, grilled meat and fish dishes, and pizza and pasta.

You will also notice that ice cream is extremely popular along this strip, and many visitors will stop off during the afternoon for an ice cream sundate or afternoon cake in many of the beach front cafés.

The main advantage eating out in Can Picafort is that many of the restaurants have amazing sea views as they are located right along the main beach front.

But as with all resorts in Mallorca, head away from the beach where you will find cheaper restaurants and be able to stretch your holiday money further.

6. Nightlife in Can Picafort

While much of the entertainment happens in the hotels, there is low key nightlife scene in the resort.

My recommendation would be to not just head to the seafront, but walk through Carrer José Trias.

Here you will find a great selections of bars and restaurants too.

Right at the end of Carrer José Trias, many British holidaymakers will appreciate a trip to the very famous “Trotters” bar.

Based on the TV series Only Fools and Horses , the bar is easily identified by the yellow Robin Reliant on the roof top outside.

7. Shopping in Can Picafort

There are several beach shops and a few clothing stores on the beach front in Can Picafort. There are also several Spa style mini-markets to get basic food and supplies.

However, for the best shopping in Can Picafort, head to the weekly market on a Friday morning from around 8:30 to 13:00.

You will find the market located on the sea front towards the marina.

There is another market in Alcudia Old Town on a Tuesday or Sunday, but the busses during peak season are infamously busy on these days so save yourself a trip and enjoy the Can Picafort market instead.

8. Sightseeing around Can Picafort

A guide to Can Picafort isn’t complete without knowing just how much there is to do and see in the area.

As well as exploring Alcudia beach resort, make you to head into Alcudia Old Town.

My favourite time to visit Alcudia Old Town is a night and you can see from this video here, just how nice it is to visit just as the sun is setting from the Old Town walls.

It is also possible to explore the whole North East corner of Mallorca using the public transport system.

9. Getting to Can Picafort

During the summer months, you can get a direct TIB bus from Palma Airport to Can Picafort by taking the A32 bus. You can see the timetable here .

Go Bird Watching at the Albufera Parc Natural

A very interesting day trip for those who love walking and nature is to the Albufera nature park. S’Albufera, the largest and most important wetland area in the Balearics, is a former lagoon separated from the sea by a belt of dunes, which for many centuries – but especially in the last two as a result of human influence – has filled up with sediments converting it into an extensive flood plain. The Natural Park affords protection to some 1708 hectares of marshes and dunes.

You can visit the Albufera Natural Park and follow one of the many trails, learn about the different species that inhabitat the area and do a spot of bird watching from one of the hides, which is especially popular in spring and autumn when migratory birds drop in on their way to or from the continent of Africa.

Take a Walk to Son Real

A great walk for people staying in Can Picafort is to the Necropolis of Son Real. There is a walk that goes from where the promenade ends at Son Baulo (at the end of Can Picafort) along a coastal path. You find an old cementery dated from 11 bc. The tombs right by the sea are fascinating, and they are carved out of local rock that the people oh so long ago quarried. The walk itself from Can Picafort is very pleasant as, where the promenade ends, you cross the beach at Son Baulo and then follow a path or you can walk on the sand by the dunes and to the archeological site. The views of Alcudia Bay are magnificent.

Sunbathe at the beach in Can Picafort

The beach at Can Picafort is one of Mallorca's best beaches, being part of Alcudia Bay, with fine sand, calm sea and amazing views. This is a big beach, with beach bars, amenities, sun beds and water activities. You can lounge on one of the sun beds on the beach, paying just a flat rate to stay there all day, including the use of a parasol too.

The most popular areas on the beach at Can Picafort are where some of the most popular beach bars are, such as the Casetas des Capellans at the end of the beach in the direction of Playa de Muro. This is a very popular spot with locals who like to set their towels down on the sand under the shade of the pine trees at the end of the beach. All the way at the other end of Can Picafort, the beach at Son Baulo is also very popular, close to Bananas Playa and Na Patana. The sea is very pleasant here and the views are marvellous. It is difficult to say which is the best part of the beach in Can Picafort with children, as the whole beach is very safe, the waves not too high and the sea not deep until you have gone very far out. There are lifeguard stations along the beach.

Enjoy the Nightlife

Can Picafort is not famous for its nightlife and yet boasts some very good bars and chill out pubs, plus discos like Skau or Charlys where there is always a very good atmosphere. Also along the sea front area you will find many bars where to have a drink with great views to the bay.

If you are looking for a great night out in the party resort of Magalluf or Ballerman, there is a weekly evening tour to take you there and back.

Go to the local water park

In Mallorca there are only three water parks, and one of them is situated in the resort of Port de Alcudia. It is the Hidropark and, despite being the smallest water park in Mallorca, it offers a great variety of water slides, a wave pool and many areas for children. You can easily get there by taxi or by local bus.

One of the best things to do in Can Picafort is a boat trip. Being a tourist resort and a popular destination in summer season, Can Picafort offers many options for boat tours and catamaran trips and has a fantastic location for boat trips on the bay of Alcudia. The local boat company that is based in Can Picafort offers 3 different boat trips to Formentor beach, Coll Baix beach or the Llevant nature area. All boat trips depart from the harbour in Can Picafort.

The boat trip to Formentor departs at 10am every day in summer and the excursion lasts around 4.5 hours, getting you back to the harbour in Can Picafort at around 2.30pm. The trip is on a glass bottom boat, which is fun for the children to look through the glass and spot the fishes in the sea below the boat. The views are very beautiful on this excursion and you get around one hour at Formentor Beach for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing on one of Mallorca's most pristine beaches.

Have fun at karting

There's a great karting track in Can Picafort and you can have a fun experience with the whole family, as children from as young as 5 years can participate. The guys at the karting track are friendly and will look after you, showing you how to operate their quality go-karts before sending you off around the track on a thrilling karting adventure. If you miss Can Picafort Market, which is only on one day per week, nearby Alcudia Market is also worth a visit, and that takes place every Sunday and Tuesday. The weekly markets in Mallorca always end around 2pm.

Visit the Sculptures at sea

Get your camera ready for some fun photos as you stroll along the promenade in Can Picafort, for you are going to see a series of original sculptures right there on the beach.
