Discover Burj Khalifa
Standing proudly at 828m, the world's tallest building is truly a feat of engineering. Built over five years from 2004 to 2009, the building represents Dubai's ambition and passion.
Design inspiration
The iconic tower's design is rooted firmly in Dubai's heritage, with the stepped spiral plan representing traditional Middle Eastern architecture. Its design motif takes cues from Islamic geometric traditions and features interlocking circles radiating out from the tower’s footprint.
Sky-high experiences
Burj Khalifa views can be taken in from two dedicated observation decks, At The Top and At The Top SKY. You can also dine at At.mosphere restaurant on floor 122 or visit The Lounge, Burj Khalifa – spread across floors 152, 153 and 154 – making it the tallest lounge on the planet.

Did you know the Burj Khalifa is so tall there is a stark difference between the temperature at the very top and at ground level? Six degrees to be precise.
Get Instagram-ready
There's no surprise the tower is one of the most photographed buildings in the world, and with more than 6.3 million posts with the hashtag #burjkhalifa on Instagram alone, it is definitely a place to be, and be seen.

Burj Khalifa
Top choice in Downtown Dubai
The Burj Khalifa is a stunning feat of architecture and engineering, with two observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors and a restaurant-bar on the 122nd. The world’s tallest building pierces the sky at 2715ft (828m) and opened in January 2010, six years after excavations began. Up to 13,000 workers toiled day and night, putting up a new floor in as little as three days.
How to get tickets to visit the Burj Khalifa
To avoid wait times or expensive fast-track admission, book tickets online as far as 30 days in advance. Timed tickets are available at the ticket counter and often sell out quickly. Book especially early if you want to go up at sunset. Prices go up during prime hours (around sunset), and closing times may vary depending on demand and the season. Budget at least two hours for your visit. For a more in-depth experience, you can rent audio guides for Dhs25 ($6.80).
High humidity often cloaks Dubai in a dense haze, making views less than breathtaking. On hazy days, it’s better to visit at night. No refunds or rain checks are given if the outdoor viewing terrace is closed for bad weather.
At the Top Observation Deck
Taking in the views from the world's tallest building is a deservedly crave-worthy experience and a trip to the "At the Top" observation deck on the 124th floor (1483ft) is the most popular way to do it. Once you get to the platform, you can seek out high-powered "viewfinders" that help bring even distant developments into focus (at least on clear days) and cleverly simulate the same view at night and in the 1980s. There are also six digital telescopes that use HD cameras with a high zoom to zero in on places outside the cityscape. Getting to the deck means passing various multimedia exhibits until a double-decker elevator zips you up at 32ft per second.
At the Top Sky
To truly be on the world's highest observation platform, you need to buy tickets to "At the Top Sky" on the 148th floor (1820ft). A visit here is set up like a hosted VIP experience with refreshments, a guided tour and an interactive screen where you "fly" to different city landmarks by hovering your hands over high-tech sensors. Afterwards, you're escorted to the 125th floor to be showered with Burj trivia and to take in another attraction called "A Falcon's Eye View" that lets you take a virtual flight over the emirate by soaring over key attractions like a bird.
Restaurants and bars at the Burj Khalifa
The food may not be out of this world, but the views are certainly stellar from At.mosphere , the world's highest restaurant, on the 122nd floor (1450ft). Richly decorated in warm mahogany, limestone and thick carpets, the dining room oozes a sophisticated ambience while the compact menu lets quality meats and seafood shine. There's also a lounge one floor up if you just want a drink. Reservations are essential, minimum spends apply, a dress code is in effect and no children under 10 are allowed. To get there, you need to take the elevator from the foyer of the Armani Hotel.
Burj Khalifa construction and architecture
Engineers and the Chicago-based architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) had to pull out all the stops in the construction of the Burj Khalifa. Pouring the 11.5ft-thick foundation alone required 16,350 cubic yards (12,500 cubic meters) of reinforced concrete. The design was inspired by the Hymenocallis desert lily.
Burj Khalifa's superlative statistics
The Burj Khalifa is not only the world's tallest building (for now) but also flaunts other records and impressive figures, including the following:
- tallest free-standing structure
- highest outdoor observation deck (1820ft)
- highest occupied floor (160th floor, at 1920ft)

- weight of concrete used is equivalent to 100,000 elephants
- the service elevator has a carrying capacity of 6 tons
- the facade is made of 28,261 glass panels
- it takes three to four months to clean the facade
- in 2011 French climber Alain Robert scaled the Burj in just over six hours
- in April 2014 two other Frenchmen (Vincent Reffet and Frédéric Fugen) set the world record base jump from the Burj

Burj Khalifa Guide: World’s Tallest Skyscraper
Dubai houses many record-breaking attractions and projects. But when it comes to skyscrapers, nothing can beat Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world. A sight to behold, Burj Khalifa should be first on your list of things to visit in the city. It’s in the heart of Dubai, waiting for you.
Start your Dubai journey and plan your visit to Burj Khalifa with this guide.
Things to Know Before You Visit Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa is one of the most popular places to visit in Dubai. The building is massive, so first-time visitors should allocate a lot of time to explore all areas of Burj Khalifa. But before you do that, here’s everything you need to know about the tallest building in the world.
What is Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa is presently the tallest building and free-standing structure in the world. It’s 828 meters long (2,716.5 feet) and houses over 160 stories, surpassing the height of the Shanghai Tower in China and the Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Mecca. It’s three times taller than the popular Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Aside from being the tallest man-made structure worldwide, Burj Khalifa’s height also broke more world records, including the highest number of building stories, the highest outdoor observation deck, the highest occupied floor, and the tallest elevator service.
Burj Khalifa was completed in October 2009. It sits in Downtown Dubai, offering sightseeing attractions, dining options, leisure activities, entertainment shows, and live public and private event venues.
Who Can Visit Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa, including its activities and establishments, all cater to children and adults of all ages, as well as visitors that require special assistance. There may be restrictions for some of the highest floors in the area, but everyone is generally free to roam around.
Burj Khalifa Age of Entry
There is no age or height limit for guests visiting Burj Khalifa, so parents can bring infants and toddlers to most parts of the tower. Burj Khalifa At The Top, the tower’s observation deck, also requires no age restrictions.
Burj Khalifa Health Restrictions
The tower, including Burj Khalifa At The Top, allows pregnant women and persons with disabilities to go up to the observation deck—as long as other adults accompany them. Most parts of Burj Khalifa are wheelchair-accessible.
Visitors with occurring or severe health issues like stroke, epilepsy, and heart disease are encouraged to consult with their doctors before visiting the highest floors of the tower, especially Burj Khalifa At The Top. Burj Khalifa’s height may trigger people with acrophobia (fear of heights), causing panic and anxiety. It’s best to visit the highest floors of the building with caution.
Is Burj Khalifa Safe and Regulated?
Burj Khalifa is a state-of-the-art building crafted and designed by world-renowned architects and engineers. Adrian Smith, the senior architect responsible for the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai and the Zifeng Tower in Nanjing, led the design-build stage of the building. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm that backed Smith for the creation of Burj Khalifa, also led the construction and design of the Willis Tower and One World Trade Center.
Considering the qualifications, standards, and achievements of the team behind the construction of Burj Khalifa, it’s easy to say that the tallest building in the world is safe. Burj Khalifa houses features that can withstand accidents and natural calamities like typhoons, earthquakes, and fire.
Burj Khalifa’s structural support can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 7.0 , a resistance that goes beyond the 5.9-magnitude standard for skyscrapers in Dubai. In case of major emergencies like fire and typhoons, Burj Khalifa also houses emergency exits and refuge areas with fireproof concrete and pressurized spaces. These are available on every 25 floors of the building.
COVID-19 Considerations
All establishments in Dubai follow special health and safety measures to combat COVID-19. Burj Khalifa and its independent establishments are required by the World Health Organization (WHO) and local authorities to ensure social distancing among visitors, sanitize publicly-used areas, conduct temperature checks for staff and guests, and promote contactless payments. Some areas and activities at Burj Khalifa may limit the number of visitors a day based on local regulations, especially the Burj Khalifa At The Top observation deck.
Guests, too, are required to follow individual safety protocols. Guests should wear face masks inside the tower at all times, avoid physical contact among staff and other visitors, and submit basic personal information for contact tracing purposes.
When is the Best Time To Visit Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa is open 24 hours daily; that’s why it’s the premier destination for tourists from different countries or other cities of the UAE. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there might be revised opening hours from Monday to Saturday, depending on local regulations.
Burj Khalifa At The Top operates from 8 AM to 10 PM from Sunday to Thursday and 5:30 AM to 10 PM from Friday to Saturday. The best time to explore all areas of the building and the observation deck is from 3:00 to 6:30 PM—this time range covers the golden hour, but it also falls in the prime hours. Expect to encounter crowds during these hours. If your preference is to visit Burj Khalifa and avoid crowds, buy Burj Khalifa tickets for non-prime hours—from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM and from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
How Long Can You Explore Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa tickets come with time slots of your visit to At The Top, the observation deck. But the ticket offers admission and unlimited access to the common areas and facilities of the building.
The average time to enjoy sightseeing at Burj Khalifa At the Top is 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can, of course, take advantage of your booked time slot fully. The Burj Khalifa management sometimes extends visits to At The Top during peak seasons or holidays. Meanwhile, the average time to enjoy a specific level or establishment is 30 minutes.
Remember that these numbers are just estimated times, don’t be compelled to follow them as you can enjoy Burj Khalifa however and how long you want. You can even do multiple visits if a one-day access isn’t enough.

Burj Khalifa a towering tourism influence

One year after its launch, the Burj Khalifa has been firmly established as one of Dubai's biggest tourism attractions.
One year after its opening, the Burj Khalifa has established itself as one of Dubai's biggest tourist attractions and helped surrounding hotels boost business by up to 35 per cent from 2009.
On New Year's Eve, thousands of revellers gathered at the world's tallest building, which receives an average of 4,000 visitors a day to its viewing deck, to watch a fireworks display broadcast around the globe.
"I would compare it to some of the leading icons that cities are using all over the world," said Ian Michael, a professor of marketing at Zayed University in Dubai.
"I see it as probably one of the first and lasting icons Dubai has created to attract tourists. It's a magnet for tourism. It's a must-see now for everyone who comes to Dubai.
"If you look at cities like Sydney and New York, the Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera House, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco have become icons. Up until the Burj Khalifa, there wasn't really a big icon that [Dubai] had claim to.
"I think a lot of the past years it was the Burj Al Arab … but I'm not sure that stood out as much as the Burj Khalifa"
Abdo Kayali, a director of sales and marketing at the Qamardeen and Al Manzil hotels in Dubai's Downtown area, says that with Dubai Mall, the city's fountains and the Burj Khalifa all in place, the area's popularity with tourists is growing tremendously.
"Hotels around the area of Downtown Dubai are trying to benefit the maximum because of their proximity to the Burj Khalifa," he said.
"If you go to Paris, you must go to the Eiffel Tower, and if you come to Dubai, you have to come to the Burj Khalifa."
Mr Kayali said all the hotels in the Downtown area were full for New Year's Eve, with the location having positioned itself as a gathering point for celebrations.
The filming of some scenes of the latest Mission: Impossible film, starring Tom Cruise, at the Burj Khalifa, can only increase the building's cachet.
"I see a tremendous opportunity coming soon with the Mission: Impossible movie," said Mr Kayali. "I see increased demand for the Downtown area after the movie is launched."
Al Murooj Rotana hotel, near the Downtown area, is also benefiting.
"We do have particular guests asking for a Burj Khalifa view," said Anke Glaessing, the resident manager at Al Murooj.
"You have people coming saying 'I want to stay opposite the highest tower in the world.' It is definitely a selling factor for the Al Murooj."
Ms Glaessing said the hotel had been running an almost full house over the recent holiday periods including National Day and Christmas.
Vipen Sethi, the chief executive of Landmark Group, whose restaurants - Carluccio's and Mango Tree - overlook the fountain area by the Burj Khalifa, said there had been an increase in traffic and visitors. He could not say exactly how much that increase was but said activity was "really picking up".
"[Burj Khalifa] is getting to be a popular destination. It's packed over the weekend," Mr Sethi said. "There are a lot of people there shopping, walking around, the food courts are busy and they have a lot of nice restaurants. The whole Burj Khalifa area has been a feather in the cap of Dubai. It has come up very nicely."
Dr Michael said he expected the building would feature in numerous advertising campaigns over the next few years. "I think a lot of marketing Dubai will be doing in the future will be around the Burj Khalifa, similar to what Sydney would do. You probably cannot market the brand Sydney without the opera house."

Plans for 'world's tallest building' that would dwarf Burj Khalifa unveiled
Plans have been unveiled for the world’s tallest building which could be built in Bangkok, Thailand.
The company behind the world’s current tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, plan to build the structure.
The announcement was made by prime minister of Thailand Srettha Thavisin on X, who met with Chinese and Middle Eastern counterparts on Friday.
He said: ‘It will create considerable investment value and attract tourists.
‘Promoting investments from the private sector is a key factor to stimulate the country’s economy and generate income for the people.’
Mr Thavisin hopes the project will serve as a man-made tourist attraction for the ever-growing amount of people visiting Bangkok.
While the height and cost of the project are currently unclear, the building would strip Burj Khalifa of ‘the world’s tallest building’ title.
The building which is currently unnamed would serve multiple purposes including being used for offices, entertainment hubs and hotels.
This would include an entertainment centre with casinos, a financial hub, and a large department store.
The company behind the project is the Emaar Group, which also developed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
A government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke told Bloomberg : ‘The prime minister put forward a challenge to them that they could build a tower here that’s even taller than the one in Dubai.
‘They didn’t reject the idea.’
The company’s founder, Mohamed Alabbar, said talks about the future tower are still at an early stage.
It would be developed by Mr Alabbar and a group of investors rather than a publicly traded firm.
This isn’t the first time a country has tried to beat the world record for the tallest building.
Saudi Arabia attempted to build a structure three times the size of the Shard in London.
But development grounded to a halt amid an apparent power play between the rich.
The building was abandoned halfway through but it could be picked up once again after a decade.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin posted the announcement on his X account on Friday, sharing details of his meeting with Chinese and Middle-Eastern companies.
The exact height and cost of the project aren't clear, but the megastructure would reportedly strip Burj Khalifa of "the world's tallest building" title.
The unnamed tower would serve multiple purposes, combining offices, hotels and entertainment hubs under the same roof.
The project will include an entertainment center, complete with house casinos, a financial hub, and a large department store.
The grandiose plan to overtake Burj Khalifa could be possible thanks to the involvement of Emaar Group.
The Middle Eastern firm - responsible for the 821m tall tower - might be looking to break their own record.
A government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke told Bloomberg: "The prime minister put forward a challenge to them that they could build a tower here that's even taller than the one in Dubai.
"They didn't reject the idea."

The company founder, Mohamed Alabbar, said that the talks for "a super tall tower" are still at an early stage.
He added that Thai project will be developed by a group of investors, including him personally, rather than by the publicly traded firm.
Mr Thavisin added that the investors are yet to evaluate the prospects before making a proposal.
He said: "It will create considerable investment value and attract tourists.
"Promoting investments from the private sector is a key factor to stimulate the country’s economy and generate income for the people."
The former property tycoon has established himself as Thailand's chief "salesman" since entering the office in September.
In a bid to catch up with rivals in the region, Mr Thavisin has pursued huge corporations to draw foreign investment into the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia.
He hopes that the "mega project" will serve as a man-made tourist attraction to the country that's reliant on visitors.
The vital tourism industry raked in over $31billion from foreigners last year only - attributing for 12 per cent of GDP.
This isn't the first time someone has tried to beat the world record for the tallest building.
Saudi Arabia attempted to build a tower three times bigger than Shard but the construction came to an abrupt halt amid an apparent power play between the rich.
The building was abandoned halfway through for over a decade but it may finally be picked up again.
Dubai also has some serious ambitions to become a megacity with a string of record-breaking projects.
Within the next decade or so, Dubai is hoped to have the world's tallest building, the world's biggest mall. the world's biggest aquarium, the world's biggest theme park - and more.
The Dubai horizon is an iconic part of the city's appeal and the latest project, The Dubai Creek Tower will become its centrepiece - with hopes to open it in 2025.
